welcome back. a little 2-year-old syrian boy has become a symbol of the migrant crisis facing europe. not just europe, the entire world. the boy was found dead on a turkish beach after their boat sank. his mother and brother were also killed. asking europe's world leaders to let in more migrants. peter joins us now, a cnn political commentator and associate professor in new york. britain just announced they are going to let in more syrian refugees. this is the picture that the world saw. do you think david cameron, in great britain would have made this decision if not confronted by this picture? >> i don't think so. this migrant crisis has been going on and getting bigger and bigger for months now.

there's a lot of fear by cameron and other politicians there will be a backlash against them. i think, with this picture is a feeling there will be more support. >> we all look at a 2-year-old kid. we look at a family and think it could be ours. now, we hear the anguish pain from a father. listen to that. >> translator: is there someone's children who is not valuable to them? everything is gone. i plan to sit by the grave of my wife and children. that is it. >> he plans to sit fwi grave of his wife and children. in syria, he doesn't want anyone's help. he doesn't feel like any nation helped him when he needed it. >> he had a legal claim to go to canada. he had relatives who were going to take care of him. he couldn't get the right document in turkey because it's so chaotic there.

places where people are willing to leave and risk it all for the chance, the chance, not necessarily a 50% chance they can get a better life. >> the answer has to be a more generous policy but also a renewed effort to end the civil war in syria. the civil war has been such a disaster in producing migration throughout the world. i think there's at least a glimmer of hope. because of the iran nuclear deal and the relationship between the united states and iran, we can have a new process to end that ghastly war. >> i don't want to make it seem like it is simple, it requires a heart, a heart to deal with problems like these young kids. european leaders are meeting. this is the train station in budapest, in hungary. hungary is not doing economically brilliant right now. they have their own domestic problems. all of europe needs to ban tagt and find out a way to handle

passions from those who back the clerk. >> i support kim davis. you are going to see god's people rise up like never before. i think her going to jail, i think they just woke up a great sleeping giant. >> reporter: kim davis was tearful on the stand, testifying her religious beliefs and conscious make her up able to issue the licenses in accordance with the supreme court's marriage equality ruling this summer. davis is currently up healing the order to issue the licenses in a higher court. in an earlier statement davis saids it's about marriage and god's word. it's a matter of religious liberty protected under the first amendment. the court rejected the organizement that she was factually unable tor physically unable to comply with the court's order to issue the licenses. judge david bunning saying our

not to believe her. >> i want to bring in maria, a strategist and political commentator. great to have you with us. >> thank you. >> what did you think of his demeanor there? he seemed almost satisfied with this. maybe she did say something. >> i know, right? i was equally surprised. it didn't surprise me she would have made that kind of prez z enation. she is incredibly smart and professional and i was pleased to see the reaction. he got everything he needed from her. in fact, she answered every single question that the committee put to her. maybe she convinced him that secretary clinton wasn't the one running across the grassy knoll. i think this will -- obviously, the questions will continue. i think, from what we have seen and heard, she did a terrific job in putting to rest the concerns from the committee. we will see.

>> let's talk about this other person they want to interview. the state department i.t. guy. his lawyers made it clear he's going to plead the fifth. what is that about? >> look, it's difficult for outsiders to see. we want the truth. this person is a noncombatant. he is not a politician, doesn't want to be a politician. he is the i.t. guy. there are a lot of things you can say that get you in trouble, confidentiality agreements you signed. i think his attorney is doing what a good attorney should do. do not expose yourself. rest on your constitutional rights. you do not have to give all kind of information and get into trouble. >> you are looking forward to october when hillary clinton will be testifying. what is she going to say that is new? what are we going to hear? >> we'll see. i think, sort of to your point that maybe we won't hear anything new. guess what?

this will have been the third time she testifies for many, many hours in front of these committees. it will have been in total more than ten investigations that these committees have done over the issue of benghazi. many reports saying there was no wrong doing and no political cover up, which is what republicans have been alleging from the beginning. tens of thousands of documents have been turned over to these committees. hundreds and thousands of taxpayer money has been spent on trying to figure out what happened in benghazi. you know, secretary clinton took responsibility for what happened. there was a report that came out that was essentially put forward. 29 recommendations she embraced and put in place. her point is, look, we need to get to the bottom of this. many people, the state department thought they had gone to the bottom of this and putting the recommendations in

place. that has been the point, alisyn, so none of this happens again. republicans, i think, are in a position of being, you know, accused of political overreach, which is not the first time. >> let's talk about what hillary clinton is going to do over the weekend. she is going to start a women's initiative where by she weaves women's issues into every facet of her campaign. everything that she talks about will now also incorporation women to it. let me, while we are at it, show you the latest polling from an abc news/washington post poll that shows where she stands among women. she is 48% favorable. 51% unfavorable. that compares to july where her numbers were better. what's gone wrong with hillary clinton and women? >> the strategy tells you they understand they are going to have to do something they did not do in 2008, which is to put the fact she is a woman, she is a champion of women's issues and has been. it is a threat that runs through

her entire career and put that front and center. if all you see her talking about is the usual talking points, women voters don't like it. most voters don't like it. independents don't like it. it's a smart kind of thing. she should have done it in 2008. it will sell better now. i have seen her in some settings talking about the work she's done with women overseas with the state department, the clinton foundation. it is compelling. a different hillary clinton that we would do well to see more of. that's really who she is, politically. >> i want to talk about the window joe biden gave us into his decision making whether or not he will run. let me play for you what he said, this heart felt moment where he explained it. >> the factor is, can i do it? can my family undertake what is a commitment that will be proud

to undertake under ordinary circumstances. the honest to god answer is, i just don't know. >> that was last night. that was a somber moment for joe biden. which way do you think he's leaning? >> that's the big question. i don't think anybody knows. what we saw last night was a glimpse into what he is going through, the heart wretching moment he is going through with his family. what was so compelling to me is it felt like you were in his living room and you were the only one he was talking to about this. i think that is part of joe biden's appeal in terms of his authenticity, in terms of letting people in and really speaking his mind. i think he deserves this moment. i think he needs to continue to make all of the actions that he's doing in terms of talking to the right people, making sure that his team is looking at all the polling information. he deserves that. that doesn't mean he's leaning toward running.

it's our times. these are issues others have not dealt with. it's not saying that today's leaders shouldn't be dealing with it, of course they should. these are different times, dimpt scrutiny. i think there are great questions coming out of this. it is a fascinating discussion we should be having as a sports nation. what do we want them to do? should they be the judge, jury? it's what the union gave. or do we want every player running for the courts? i'm guessing we don't want them clogged with players. this is an issue, because of this decision, we are now looking at it. >> whatever glee i might have in the fact brady plays you made excellent questions. why be tied up with deflated footballs. the domestic abuse and deflated

is. that's alarming. that said, his supporters will say he's antiestablishment. he's an outsider. this is exactly what we want. i just like to remind them, the establishment does not have a hole, does not corner the market on knowledge. you can be antiestablishment and actually know stuff, too. >> interesting point. let's look at where he is in the polls right now. it is, you know, the numbers keep rising. this is the new university poll, republican voters nationwide. donald trump is at 30%. he is that much higher than the next, ben carson at 18%, then cruz 8%, bush 8%. look what's happened since july. trump doubled numbers since july as has, more so, ben carson. it's interesting. the next poll, in a trump versus carson match up, however, carson comes out on top with 55%. wait a second? >> we have that clip. it's actually carson beating

trump, which is frankly remarkable. >> explain that, amanda. >> right now, the polls just show what -- who americans want to hear more from. ben carson hasn't had a huge presence. the first republican debate was his introduction to voters. people are intrigued. he has a brilliant life story to tell. that said, looking at the head-to-head match up with carson and trump, they are wildly different candidates. i think it's very hard to evaluate them one against the other. when i look at that poll, i see indictment with the field and people not rising to the occasion, fighting for a cause, proving they have what it takes. >> there's two remarkable things here. carson is the only republican candidate defeating or leading trump in a head-to-head match up. the only one trails by a lot. the other interesting thing, this is carson's best week.

he's off the trail. he's on vacation right now. it seems he is doing his best by not being around. sthak is right. i talked to a lot of conservatives around the country who are intrigued by ben carson and haven't seen a lot of ben carson. when i point out the things he's said and the positions he's held on the second amendment, just being one, they are actually very surprised by some of his very bizarre past statements. i think once ben carson starts talking more and the level of scrutiny that is applied to other candidates starts being applied to ben carson, i think people will admire his life story and consider someone else to be president. >> let's talk about jeb bush. as we saw in that poll, his numbers have gone down since july. he is in a war of words with donald trump. jeb bush appears to be getting

feistier and feistier. >> i'm going to push back when he says things that are ugly and will damage our brand. i'm sure he attacks me, i'm going the fight back. >> he could ignore trump or engage. >> look how uncomfortable he looks. body posture is hunched up. i think he's making the classic establishment type of mistake. when you see a grass roots kind of movement that isn't supportive of you. instead of drawing the lessons saying they are upset about illegal immigration, they want to kill that movement. he's going after trump to kill him. he thinks it's his job to take him out of the race. it's backfiring. people want an optimistic

message. >> you are right he will. do you believe he will order the code red? >> you know, jeb bush, it sounds like he's saying, i'm angry, i'm high energy. you can't say it, you have to be it. amanda is right, it doesn't come off as authentic. jeb's selling point is he was a happy warrior. it doesn't work well. frankly, it's benefiting other candidates, i think. marco rubio, i think, looks more sober when it comes to trump. jeb, honestly looks like he's setting his hair on fire. walker looks more sober when it comes to trump. i think jeb, you know, jeb is the front-runner for the sort of establishment wing so he's doing what he thinks he has to do. but, i think we should take a breath. it's august. or september. >> it's september! >> 2015. we have 14 months.

this is the clerk that denies couples of marriage licenses since the supreme court ruled same-sex marriages were legal throughout the nation. a judge rule that is kim davis had to issue marriage licenses to any couple that is met the legal requirements to marriage. she's been a hold out, refusing to do that. she is in contempt of court. attorneys say she is asking the state for a simple fix. >> she's asked for one simple accommodation for her faith. not just for her, but clerks in kentucky that are situated. remove her name. she'll issue the certificates. she doesn't want her name and title on it. that, in her understanding and mind is authorizing something that is contrary to her christian values and convictions. >> reporter: the governor says here in kentucky, it is the responsibility of the county clerk to issue marriage

licenses. there are no plans, according to the governor to convene a special session to discuss whether or not there should be changes to the marriage license form as kim davis' attorney is requesting. here is the news this morning. the couples who have been denied marriage licenses have that chance to come today and get the licenses. with davis in court, a judge authorized five of her six deputy clerks to give out licenses to couples that apply. the sixth that will not be giving out the licenses was her son. davis was given the chance if she agreed not to interfere with the process but he couldn't guarantee that. >> it will be interesting to see if they walk away with licenses today. breaking a few minutes ago, britain announcing it will get thousands more refugees.

this is a stand off in hungary with police. fred is live in budapest this morning. good morning, fred. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, john. the scene here continues to be tragic. i'm here at the train station where a train is stranded with hundreds of mostly syrian migrants on it who want to go on to germany. i want to show you the scene. many of them camping out in the camp, in front of the train. they had a makeshift demonstration where people were just starting to cry, starting to scream, saying all they want is they want to be able to move forward. they say the situation on the train is bad. they have been holed up more than 24 hours with little food and water. a lot of pregnant women and children. i managed to speak to one of those on board. here is what he had to say. issue marriage licenses? >> well, hopefully she'll get out of jail because the state of kentucky will realize there are compromises that will protect the rights of gays and lesbians to get marriage licenses and for her not to have her name on it. >> you have a suggestion. what could have been the answer other than jailing her? >> sure. one of the answers would have been that the state of kentucky change their marriage license after the supreme court. it used to say bride and groom. they changed it to spouse one and spouse two. they could accommodate miss davis by removing her name. it's not clear why her name has to be on the license. sthak would have been acceptable to her, just to not have her name on the marriage license? would she have issued it to same-sex couples? >> as far as i understand, she said she would issue it if her name wasn't on it and allowed all the deputies to issue the

marriage license provided her name wasn't on it. i don't understand why we can't work together to find a compromise where it would be a win/win. >> that is a great suggestion. she can't just languish in a jail cell for what she says are her religious beliefs. the other alternative is she could have resigned. she took an oath to uphold the law of the land. the supreme court said this is the law of the land. so, she could have resigned her post. >> she could have but she shouldn't have to. we have a rich history in the united states of accommodating objectors. the state of kentucky accommodates for other types of licensing. north carolina has shown a way of how to do it for marriage in particular. we have done it with pacifists and a variety of people. the question here is, if we can accommodate someone, why shouldn't we? why should the burden be every aspect of the job or forced to

resign or go to jail? we haven't done it with other jobs or issues, why do it with this one. >> this county clerk has been married four times, divorced three times. do you understand why it is galling to same-sex couples that she would represent the sanctity of marriage? >> as she says it, all three previous marriages took place before her conversion to christianity. she doesn't deny she's lived a life she's not proud of. now that she's become a christian, lives life in accordance with beliefs. i don't think it's my place to judge her worthiness here. if we can accommodate the religious beliefs, we should try to. >> none of us are here to judge. it is her per ogtive to be married as many times as she wants as a heterosexual woman.

same-sex couples want the same. she has made a mistake a couple times and they feel she is judging them for wanting to live their fullest life. >> that's definitely true. she has a position on what marriage is, the union of a man and woman. all she's asking is to keep her job and not have her name on the licenses. county clerks do lots of things. she's been in this position for a while. if we can work together, we should. >> that sounds reasonable, ryan. is there any indication that kentucky will move towards that and allow her name to be taken off the marriage licenses? >> well, so far, the judge that heard the case can't allow that outcome to come forward. the governor says he refuses to call the legislature back to session to fix this legislatively. it looks like it might have to wait until january, when the

we have breaking news to tell you about. the clerk's office in rowan county kentucky has opened today. the county clerk is in jail this morning. kim davis argues that same-sex marriage violates her police chiefs. b.e. l. ie. f. s. . >> this clerk did everything in her power to stand in the way of issuing those licenses. that is why she is waking up in jail this morning. william smith and james yates are hopeful they are incredibly optimistic this is the day they will get that license. soon we ool see them come out of this court house and we'll know

whether the deputy clerks that told the judge they will issue licenses will in fact issue licenses. a lot of kim davis's supporters came out to the courthouse this morning. they are supporting her for deciding to hold out, deciding not to issue marriage licenses despite a court's order. she is now being held in contempt of court. you've also got marriage equality advocates outside of this county clerk's office, believing this is the day they've been waiting for. the judge asked five of her deputies to agree to issue the licenses. five of them did. the sixth deputy is kim davis's son. he is the loan holdout among the deputies. we should soon be seeing this couple emerging with their marriage license. i've just received word they were in fact given their license. they are from this county.

they wanted to obtain this marriage license document in their home county. it is their sixth try to obtain this. it is personal for them, deeply personal for them. we are being told they've been victorious in what should have been a simple task, given the supreme court's ruling earlier this summer allowing sm ining s marriage throughout the country. >> breaking news, the news that same-sex marriage licenses are being issued, are being handed out in the rowan county clerk's office right now. it will be interesting to see how that affects the case of kim davis, who is in jail right now for contempt of court. she of course said she would not approve of licenses being issued from that office at all. . meanwhile a major development this morning in the hunt for three suspected cop killers in illinois. authorities now have home surveillance video that may show the alleged murderers. rosa flores live in fox lake, illinois, with the very latest.

we've seen with barack obama. a lot of people like barack obama. but even though that do, i think are now looking at maybe having some experience in national security would have been helpful or having some idea of the nature of the threats that confront us would have been better for the united states than what we have with this president. >> there are those who say this iran nuclear deal empowers th e quds force. >> it does. they have been a thorn in our side for a long, long time. as you know, they were training and equipping the enemies of the united states and iraq and afghanistan. they're obviously very active in iraq right now, which i oppose. we have a president who's actually, you know, working with the quds force and encouraging them. called them a partner in peace. i think that's wrong.

a possible break through this morning in the hunt for three suspected cop killers in illinois. home surveillance video may show the suspects. joining us to talk at it this morning morning is matthew horace. >> the video may have given us good images of the suspects, enough that we could use facial recognition to try to find out the identity of who these people

are. >> he says we've retrieved what we believe to be significant video that has been turned over to the department of homeland security for processing. any moment now we might know the results of this video. why is it turned over to the department of home security? >> they they have equipment to analyze the video very quickly. if they can give us quick turnaround that will be one more step in this case. they had better equipment or the resources to be able to turn around the analysis very quickly. >> you think the police have more physical evidence than we in the media know about. >> i know they have more physical evidence than they're reporting. they could have taken fingerprints off the firearm. they may have dna. in this case because the suspects have not been identified publicly, it's very important that they keep that information at a certain level

until they're ready to do it. >> lieutenant gliniewicz's gun was found at the scene. what does that tell them? >> obviously the gun is not in the hand of the suspects, but we can use that gun to determine if that was the gun that was used in the murder. if it was fired we could possibly get fingerprints or dna off of the casingcasings. >> you believe that lieutenant gliniewicz may have stumbled on something and that may have been what precipitated all of this. from your mind and your gut with years of experience, what do you think the scenario was? >> from my experience having been a patrol office you radio in that you have suspicious circumstances and it could have been one of any hundreds of scenarios. when he got out of that police cruiser and went up to approach

those suspects, something happened, a struggle ensued, he lost a gun or used a gun and that's where the situation derived out of. it could be anything. but i have to tell you, whatever the reason was he was stopping these people was dead on and spot on. and we know because these are dangerous dangerous suspects. >> three suspected cop killers are still on the run. explain the resources that come to bear with something like this. >> the federal, state and local governments come together and galvanize all their resources, that strategic leadership and tactical leadership. there's hundreds of people, boots on the ground to try to take out leads, send out leads and try to follow this to a successful conclusion. >> this is home video that we may have the results of any moment now. also this was a warehouse video. can't we assume there's other surveillance video out there?

possibility. almost torn from the headlines but not. >> while we were there in northern thailand, the unrest was going on down in bangkok. there was violence on the street every day. i was there with my family making the film. it had an intensity to our lives as film makers that just not too miles away was civil unrest in a country which is pretty volatile anyway at best of times. >> did you feel that tension or did it always feel somewhat removed from where you were? >> i think we feel the tension all the time now, sadly, in life. you know, it's just there. it's palpable. we have to be able to address that in some fashion with leaders, i think. yeah, it was palpable there when we were making the film. >> there's been reviews. i'm sure you've seen some of

them. some are a little critical of the film's handling of cultural context. some calling it racist. how do you react to that? >> i haven't read the reviews. i don't read them. >> do you generally stay away from them? >> i stay away from them. >> good for you. what do you say of that criticism, though? >> it's heavy-handed. this is a theatrical piece. get real. don't take yourself too seriously here. i don't think this is racist at all. it's a family film. i think the brothers have acq t acquitted themselves grandly as film makers and writers. i don't think that's necessary. >> i think this is going to be a great romp as you said. the idea that it holds by the throat and doesn't let go.
