10:00 am
hello, i'm wolf blitzer, and it is 1:00 p.m. here in the united states and we welcome you to join us. donald trump is in hot water again for what he didn't say. he didn't challenge a supporter at a town hall meeting who made anti-muslim comment, and called the president a muslim. >> we have a problem in the country, and it is called the muslims. we know that the current president is one. you know he is not even an american. >> and we need the question as
10:01 am
the first question? >> anyway, we have training c camps growing where they want to kill us. that is my question. when can we get rid of them. >> we will be looking at a lot of different thing, and lot of people are saying that, and saying that bad things are happening out there, and we will be looking at that and plenty of things. >> and the campaign manager says that trump did not hear the anti-muslim remark, and all he heard was a question about training camps that we have to look into it, and the media want to make it an issue about obama, but it is a question about him waging a war on christianity. and hillary clinton wasted no time blasting donald clinton, and him not denouncing false statements about potus is hateful rhetoric about muslims is disturbing, and just plain wrong. cut it out. >> it is easier to afford your education, and get on with the rest of your life.
10:02 am
>> there was a remark that we have a problem in this country called muslims, and -- [ inaudible ] first of all, what do you think about that comment and secondly, how would you have responded if somebody said that in a town hall? >> well, i was appalled and as you may know, quickly put out a tweet expressing the great disappointment with that kind of rhetoric and calling on him, and anybody else who is seeking the highest office of the land, to start behaving like a president, to show respect and to stand up for the truth. he knew or he should have known that what that man was asking is not only way out of bound, but it was untrue. and he should have from the
10:03 am
beginning repudiated that kind of rhetoric, that level of hatefulness in a questioner in an audience that he was appearing before. so i would, you know, call on him and call on all of the candidates to stop this descent into the hateful, mean-spirited divisive rhetoric that we have seen too much of. >> and how would you respond? >> well, if that person would not have come to my revent, and if he did, i would have called him out, and that has no place in a political discussion like we are trying to have here, and not only out of place and wrong, but it is totally factually untrue, and to quit impugn iing the integrity of the president. i think it is prejudice and i think it is discriminatory, and i think that it comes out of the unfortunate reservoir of hateful
10:04 am
rhetoric that we have seen too much of where people are being set against one another, and that has no place in our politicsw. we have serious issues that we have to deal with in the years ahead, and we should be trying to bring the country together around solution, and not trying to divide up people and set them against each other. >> i was listening to lindsey graham in iowa and he said that this is a defining moment in the campaign for all republicans and that donald trump should go on national tv to apologize for what he said about muslims and what he said about the president, and what do you feel about it, because donald trump has canceled the appearances today, and should he go on tv to apologize and make this right or whether he is trying to appeal to the supporters who may have prejudice -- >> well, andrea, let's find out,
10:05 am
and le's see what he does. i think that his taking a time-out to think hard about what happened last night, what he did not call out or repudiate at the time, gives him the chance to express his regret about that kind of behavior and those sorts of comments in one of his political events. i hope he does. i hope he will take senator graham's advice and request and do just that. you know, we can all have difference, and that is what the e lek is shuns are about, and we can compare and contrast our experiences and our views and our visions and our program, and that is all fair game. but we have a bigger obligation to the american people to try to have a campaign that is about what is really going on in the lives of americans, and to do everything that we can to
10:06 am
eliminate from our political discourse the kind of comments that we heard yesterday. so i hope that he will. >> his campaign manager said that he didn't hear correctly. >> well, he should address that. >> okay. in talking to college students in new hampshire, they were pretty clear that they would vote on -- [ inaudible ] -- and why vote for your plan rather than -- >> well, there is plenty of time to compare and contrast, but briefly, i believe that my plan is more comprehensive, because i am aiming at getting the costs down and not putting more money in the system so that the costs keep rising, and i have a heavy emphasis on the paying down the debt and different ways to help the students do exactly that, and i believe that people who are getting an education need to have some responsibility for their education. so i have a plan that will make
10:07 am
it possible for anybody at the ending a four-year college or university to avoid having to borrow money for tuition, but we are still going to have to expect the students to do their part. i believe in the students working, you know, ten hours a week is what i recommend. so i think that my plan is really aimed at addressing the iss issues that i hear young americans talking to me about. >> more about the ten hours a week? >> it is beneficial and helpful for students to make their own contribution if they are seeking financial help for them to make their own contribution, and for the colleges to get costs down by having the students working toward the payments of, you know, their dues, their fees, their living expenses. and that -- no, but it is recommended and you can go online and see all of the
10:08 am
specifics of what i am offering, and in particular the national service component and the young parent component is something that is overlooked by too many people and not in part of other people's plans. >> and specifically, what did you believe of carly furnna's views the other night, and -- carly fiorina's views other night and her views of planned parenthood the other night, and allow women to break through the glass creeling? >> i will let you be the pundits and i saw that all of the candidates were against funding planned parenthood and i vigorously disagree with that and i believe it is fair and wrong to single out planned parenthood and it is unfair to deprive the millions of women who get care from planned parenthood and access to those
10:09 am
services, and it is not one candidate, but all of them, and some of them standing on that age plan on shutting down the government of the united states over the $500 million dollars that the government provides to planned parenthood to take care of breast cancer screenings, and blood screenings, and other women issues, and that is what i will defeat, and the counter productive, damaging ideas of shutting down the united states government over it. >> and secretary, will you support the house bill to support -- last year in the conference at las vegas, you said that there would be economic opportunity to lift --
10:10 am
ins incentives for the attached -- >> well, in general in the absence of a broader energy plan that does include concessions from the oil and gas industry, i don't think that the ban should be lifted. i'm not against it under all circumstances, but i have not yet seen any legislation introduced that would strike the right balance from my perspecti perspective. i will put out and continue to put out the whole range of energy policies that the i support. and among them is how we shift away from the fossil fuels, and that is how we shift away from the increasing production, and shift away from the subsidizing of that production, and indeed distribution. so i am looking at it wholistically and the bill as i understand it does not come anywhere near doing what i
10:11 am
believe has to be done to move towards the energy transition that is so important to our country. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> all right. so while we are going to go from the hillary clinton q & a to the white house press secretary josh earnest who has been asked about donald trump's comments. let's listen in. >> and that is precisely what every presidential candidate is doing when they do not denounce the cynical strategy of donald trump, because they want the same votes. other republicans have used the same strat jishgs and one republican congressman told a report er th reporter that he was david duke without the baggage, and he was elected by a position to the third the ranking position in the house, and those same members of congress blocked immigration reform, and those same members of congress blocked reauthorization voting act, and those same members of congress could not support a simple
10:12 am
funding bill, because they are eager to defend the confederate flag. so those are the priorities of today's republican party, and they will continue to be until somebody in the republican party decides to summon the courage to stand up and change it. >> should donald trump apologize to the president? >> i am not really, and i have not seen any evidence to indicate that he is interested in my advice about what he should do. aisha? >> i would like to ask because secretary kerry said in london that the u.s. believes that -- >> and very tough response from the white house to donald trump's controversial silence in the face of someone who showed up at the town hall meeting yesterday, and we will get full analysis of what is going on, because this is right now exploding into to a major story in the race for the white house, and the analysts and the reporters are standing by, and we will take a quick break, and much more after this.

former secretary of state hillary clinton was the target of the real gop candidates at wednesday night's cnn presidential gop debate. she was criticized on a range of
10:31 am
issues from the support of planned parenthood to the private use of e-mail servers, and car ly fiorina said if you want to stump a democrat, ask them for one accomplishment of mrs. clinton, and so i asked her what was your number one accomplishment as secretary of sta state? >> well, didn't see all of it, but this is the usual back and forth political attacks, and the kinds of the things that you would say when you are on a debate stage and you don't have much else to say. i didn't hear anything from any of them how to make college more affordable and get the student debt down or equal pay for equal pay for women, and what they are going to do to make sure that we deal with the challenges of raising incomes for hardworking people, so i don't really pay a lot of attention to this kind of the rhetoric that heats up the
10:32 am
debate stage. they are all trying to vie for more attention from obviously, the republican party, and i'm going to let them decide how best to do it, but if anybody is interested, there is a long list about what i have done, and i am very proud of it, and you can read my book "hard choices" and how i negotiated a cease-fire between israel and hamas, and how i put together the coalition that led to international sanctions against iran and you can read about what i did when i was first lady to get the health insurance program or as a senator working across the aisle on issues like getting better health care for the veterans, and you know, this is the silly season. i am looking forward to eventually debating on that stage whoever they finally nominate once they get around to doing that. >> so listen to what carly fiorina said, madam secretary, about videos about planned parenthood, an organization that
10:33 am
you support. >> i dare hillary clinton, and barack obama to watch these t e tape, and watch a fully formed fetus on the table, and its heart beating and the legs kicking while someone says "we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain" and this is about the character of our nation. >> all right. planned parenthood says that video does not -- madam secretary, let me explain, the planned parenthood says it is not going to depict an aborted fetus, but it is a miscarriage, and first of all, have you seen the very, very controversial videos? >> well, wolf, let's break down what is happening here, because i think it is important, and i know that there is a move on by some of the republicans in the congress to actually shut down the united states government over their demand that we no longer give federal fund iing t
10:34 am
planned parenthood to perform the necessary health services that they do for millions of women. so let's puts a side for a moment here that there is no debate, and there should be no absolutely no argument that planned parenthood does cancer screenings, and helps to provide family planning and contraceptive a advice and works to provide some of the most difficult kinds of counseling when it comes to giving an hiv test for example, and what this is about is the fact that some of the planned parenthood facilities perform abortions which is legal under the laws of the united states. i understand that the republican party and in particular the candidates that we heard from last night, wish that were not the case, and wish that abortion were illegal and they could turn the clock back. and so i think that we ought to be very clear that planned parenthood has served to provide health care necessary health care for millions of women. and i think that it deserves not
10:35 am
only our support, but the continuing funding from the federal government so that these women and girls who are seeking the kinds of services that are provided will be able to achieve that. >> all right. have you, are you confident that planned parenthood, madam secretary, or any of the affiliated groups if you will have not violated any federal laws? >> well, wolf, let me tell you what i know, and that is there is a willingness on the part of planned parenthood to answer questions, and they have been doing so. some people may not want to hear the answers, but they have certainly put the answers out there into the public arena. and if the issue, the core issue that some on the stage last night or some in the congress are trying to promote or trying to raise questions about has to
10:36 am
do with the kind of research that is done legally in the united states, then that is an issue that goes far beyond any planned parenthood example. so i think it is important to sort out that there is a lot of emotion and a lot of accusations that are being hurled about, but it is important to sort out, and try to actually figure out what is going on. if it is the services that they are trying to shutdown like providing family planning or the breast cancer screenings, that is wrong, and women deserve to be given support to get those services provided. if they want to shutdown the legal provision of abortion services, then they have a bigger problem, because obviously, they, the planned parenthood does not use federal dollars to do that, and if they are more focused on the reserarh that is going on, then that is a
10:37 am
set of issues that is certainly is not only about planned parenthood. so i would hope that the republicans and particularly the republicans in the house led by speaker boehner would not put our country and our economy in peril pursuing some kind of emotional, politically charged partisan attack on planned parenthood to shut down the government. i think that is a very, very unfortunate decision. >> all right. let's talk about another source of criticism that you received last night, and this one from governor chris christie who said at the debate that you can't tell the american people the truth about the e-mail, and the controversy and he said that you should be prosecuted about having a server in the basement with national security secrets running through it, and an 18-year-old could be hacked into the server.
10:38 am
do you think it is possible they could have hacked into the server. >> this is no evidence of that, and again, rhetoric and baseless charges to somehow gain a footing in the debate and in the p primary, and it is not going to deserve any comment. >> and it took you a long time to say you are sorry with the mistake to organize that server for a long time, a nd why did i take so long? . >> and you know, well, i was trying to explain what has happened and obviously, it was clear that i should have used two different e-mail account, and i have said that was a mistake and i'm sorry, and i have taken responsibility, but i have also for more than a year now been asking to testify before the congressional committee that is investigating the situation in benghazi, and they would not let me appear finally, and i'm very happy about this, i will be appearing in the end of october, andly be looking forward to answer all of the questions, and i'm trying to be as transparent as possible,
