poll in the race. if you called around to the campaigns they say if you watch the debate mr. trump hurt himself. they've said it before. >> several times before. there are two things i think republican rivals of trump think happened in the debate that are important. whether or not he goes up or down in the initial polls. one, is that as the race takes a more substantiative turn, they think his policy gaps will be exposed and voters will recognize that. the second with carly four renee they recognize there's a way you can take on trump and be aggressive and not have it boomerang back and hurt yourself. i think those give them a blueprint to go forward. >> he himself said remember he's changed his mind or tune a lot. he said he initially didn't say that about car lly fiorina but said i'm an entertainer. the evangelical event in july and he couldn't recall asking god for forgiveness and he liked to go to church for the wine and cracker, as he called it. he showed up at the faith and

groups. i think trump's answer was going to be looking at a lot of things. that's not a real answer, even in the debate long stretches of time he had nothing to say about policy. >> quick all things should be respected and there's a decent response to the question. as a reporter if you scan the conservative websites today they're not calling out trump. they don't think he has the necessity to respond to these kind of questions and to correct the questioner. so on the right, trump doesn't have any problems. >> it's important to remember -- >> you're boatright in the sense he's competing first in the republican primary. if he doesn't have any problems on the right that could be a sustainability to the broader audience if and when you win the election. the democrats are making it a tolerance issue saying all republicans intolerant. a big test for mr. trump is how you handle adversity. he's having a bit of a rough stretch. we'll see if he can handle it. another big test is how you

handle success. what do we make of the carly fiorina moment. we could tell mr. trump was well prepared. you can be sure the others have dusted off their opposition research file on carly fiorina. she was traveling yesterday and she feels new energy. she's getting a great reception out there. can she capitalize on the moment? >> that's the big question now. she has a lot of attention on her. she knows where the attacks are going to come from. that's a big advantage she has. it's clear what her rivals are going after. she's been living off the land now. her super pac and campaign are not really funded. she has a real opportunity. she was not just strong in the debate she was dominate in the debate. >> she lead the way in terms of how you can go up against trump. i think the other ones on stage were grateful, jeb bush sort of, i mean, at times he engaged with trump but nothing in the way that carly fiorina did. i thought she was aggressive. she was a tactical gaithdebatee.

the question is hewlett-packard stuff. we've seen boxer go against her in california. those are pretty damning ads in terms of her record there. that's going to be a problem for her. also, what state does she play in? new hampshire, iowa -- >> i think iowa. >> south carolina? >> the answer on planned parenthood that was going to be a direct pitch. >> that was going to be ted cruz's moment and she sort of trumped him. forgive me. what about the rest? rubio had a strong debate mostly on foreign policy. chris christie got good reviews even from conservatives who aren't inclined to like him. jeb bush once the frontrunner seems mixed. did more than enough to stay alive. other people were like eh. >> i think he did all right but there was a couple of moments that surprised me. when you turn to a man and apologize to my wife and he refuses to, your answer has to

be better than slugging your shoulders and moving open. don't give the guy a high five. i think trump is trying to get under his skin trying to question his manhood in a way and jeb didn't do anything to push back to show i'm the guy who is going to be the grown up in this debate. he kind of played trump's game. >> at the same time bush donors are watching bush and are worried they haven't shown any energy. she bush donors and people wanted to see some fire. bush wasn't perfect but he showed life. because he has the money and the network he'll survive. >> part of the fire, i think, was the answer he gave on his brother saying one thing i knew about my brother is he kept us safe in the following days he's talked about his family even more saying my last name is bush so i get foreign policy. so that's very much, i think -- >> again to the george w. safe answer one of the great partisan divides a lot of republicans. first time george w has come up.
