some critical comments about capitalism. saying it is the mark of the devil. we know francis is not comfortable in stuffy situations. he prefers to be with the regular man. what will he do? in very much francis fashion, he meets with the homeless at catholic charities and he will speak with the united nations. he has been very critical of christians. we are expecting that perhaps he will make some comments there that could put countries in the hot seat asking them to do more to help the refugees in iraq, syria and afghanistan. of course, we don't know what pope francis will say because no one really knows. that's exactly who he is. we do know if he speaks off the cuff, he could have these countries experience a coming to jesus moment.

just a tragedy there. >> reporter: that's right. this is the latest we are getting in to cnn now. hearing from the saudi civil defense that the number of dead is indeed 250 and as many as 450 wounded. saudi authorities telling us the stampede happened in the city of mena. a huge settlement of tents which is the area for visiting pilg m pilgrims. at least 2 million people were expected to attend this year. that doubles the population of mecca. in the past, hajj has been blighted by stampedes and cru crushes. the worst in 1990 when people died in a tunnel leading to mena. this particular day has seen several tragedies in the past.

today's ritual is the stoning of the devil symbolizing their rejection of evil. in 1994 and 1998 and in 2004, hundreds of pilgrims were skillkilled in stampedes after event. after 2004, officials installed safety barriers to prevent such accidents in the future. the latest hajj stampede, 350 people were killed on a bridge notorious for bottlenecks in 2006. that prompted a security update. the massive safety concerns that saudi authorities deal with every year as these millions descend on mecca. and remember a construction crane crashed through the roof of the grand mosque there

what a week in washington. chinese president xi jinping arrives there today. he will have a private dinner with the president. the two presidents have a complicated relationship with the countries dealing with military, economic and human rights disagreements. let's go right to andrew stevens in hong kong. cyber security and hacking at the top of the list, andrew.

>> reporter: that is right. it is said they have a good personal relationship. mr. obama and mr. xi may have to dial up that side. they have a lot of differences to deal with. cyber security, as you say, hacking, right up there. xi jinping has been in seattle and he has heard the same story over and over again over the past 24 hours about the concerns the real concerns that american business have to protect businesses and getting into the chinese markets and getting in safely. two key meetings today that xi had. one was a forum by former secretary hank paulson. that represented the cream of the tech industry in the u.s. tim cook of apple and jeff bezos of amazon. and the big players were there as were the big leaders of the chinese companies.

alibaba and others. the key topic here, john, the u.s. complaining through the commerce secretary, who was also at the meetings, complaining about lack of access and intellectual property rights and pirating and allowing u.s. companies to compete on a level playing field. president xi did hear a lot of this. he did say he wanted to ease restrictions for u.s. companies moving into china. he did say a lot of the right sounding words, but the proof of the pudding is in people looking forward. and remember, at the meeting in washington, there are sanctions on the table from the u.s. to impose against chinese companies who are hacking. >> the tone and some whispering will be interesting to see. andrew stevens, thank you. >> that is a $1 trillion who's who in seattle. you look at the value of the
