"ac360" starts in just a moment. good evening. we begin tonight in las vegas where troubled star you know from either the basketball court or his stints on reality television is in the hospital. his condition unclear. lamar odom, two-time nba champion and two-time kardashian show veteran was found unconscious at a brothel outside las vegas after spending four days there the owner of the brothel says odom spent time with prostitutes in a vip suite, drank at the brothel bar and used herbal supplements. the manager of the brothel also says odom was adamant he didn't want anyone to know he was

there, to get rest and relax and, quote, get far away from something. the brothel is called the love range, operates 80 miles outside las vegas. randi kaye got a tour today. she's outside the hospital where lamar odom is now. >> reporter: there were curious tourists out front and media wanting to get inside. it's quiet because most of the women who worked there have left. they didn't like the media glare and they were upset with what happened to lamar odom. i'm told in the few days he was there, he really made quite an impression on them. the love ranch is about a 90-minute drive from las vegas. t.j. moore is one of the owners and tried to revive owed --

odom. she took us into the owner's suite, about $10,000 a night. >> how did he look to you? >> he was on his back, he had foam coming out of his mouth and a little blood coming out of his nose. i got him rolled over on his right side and he did have a bunch of fluid come out of his mouth. but i knew from previous experience that i had to get him on his side. >> reporter: was he on this side of the bed or -- >> he was on this side of the bed, and i was letting him know it was t.j. >> reporter: t.j. had driven odom to the ranch on saturday. what'd you guys talk about? >> about everything but a brothel. we talked, he told me about his life, told me about a lot of the sadness, losing his mom by at an

he wanted. >> yes, that was his preference. the ladies lined up here. i introduced the ladies and i said this is lamar, ladies, introduce yourselves. >> reporter: t.j. says he hung out in his suite with two girls that he chose. he also went to the bar. sometimes after leaving that bar, lamar odom collapsed in his room. >> did anyone at the ranch tell you that they saw odom doing drugs? >> reporter: we talked to the manager, t.j. moore, and she said she never saw him taking any drugs but just taking that herbal supplement. she said he wasn't acting like he was doing drugs. she said if he was doing cocaine, he wouldn't be very hungry, she said he ordered kentucky fried chicken for

everyone at the ranch, he had a t-bone steak and was eating homemade cupcakes. >> as far as his medical condition right now, what do you know? >> reporter: well, the family isn't saying much. they released a statement today saying they're asking for prayers and of course privacy. they don't want anyone trying to find out about his condition or trying to reach out to them. they certainly haven't said anything about his condition specifically and what the chances are for his recovery at this point. >> a lot of people pulling for lamar odom tonight including one of his mentors who coached him during the summers when odom was a talented young high school basketball player. gary charles was close to odom throughout the years. he joins me tonight. gary, i'm sorry we're meetingnd these circumstances. you've known lamar odom for, what, 20 years? >> since he was 15 years old.

>> when you first heard what happened, what went through your mind? >> i put my head down and shook it and my heart was beating a little faster. and i started praying that he would be okay. >> did it surprise you? >> i can't say surprised me. this is one of those phone cass that you kept saying i hope i don't get. >> you were afraid of something like this? >> i was afraid of something like this, yes. >> one of the things you said was that he never knew how to say no. what do you mean by that? >> lamar is probably one of the greatest and nicest young men i ever met in my life. so he would give you the shirt off his back. if 2,000 people came, he would give each within of thone of th. i believe he was 18 at the time and i said, son, i'm going to give you a piece of advice in that you better learned how to say the word no, okay.

and because if he was around good people, he would do good things. but if he was around the other element, he would just go with the flow. that's just who he was. >> people would take advantage of him and also people were bad influences on him? >> absolutely, yeah. i've always felt that being with the lakers and being with kobe, i thought it would be a good thing because i knew kobe would try to at least lead him the right way. so, you know, we were happy about that. >> at one point i know he talked to you about wanting to move to vegas to kind of get his head right. what did you think of that? >> i said to him let me get this straight. you want to straighten out your life and you're moving to vegas? the reason he was moving to vegas was because he was going to start boxing again and he wanted to go out there and start working out. as a matter of fact, he said to me, coach, i need you back in my life. i need you to be able to say no

like you used to and keep me doing the things i need to do. >> do you think he was really committed to that? was he serious about it? >> he was definitely more serious about it. and i said to him, tell me about the knicks. at one point he was supposed to come out for the knicks. he said, coach, i wasn't ready. he said but i think i'm going to be ready soon. i said to him i'll tell what you i'm going to do. i'm going to call the president of the knicks who is a friend of mine. i'm going to make him aware of what your goals are. i'm saying this to you as an incentive to see if you do the right thing. >> so he was still talking about making a comeback with the nba? >> absolutely. >> he talked publicly that death was always around him, he'd lost a lot of friends, his dad had struggled with addiction. do you think that's something that he felt? that he felt this shadow of what had happened to his dad? >> he talked about it all the

time. he was always around those type of things and he always worried about that and was afraid that could become him. and i would always tell him, lamar, it doesn't have to be you. you know, use that to go the other way. >> do you think if he does pull out of this, if he recovers, that he will make changes? >> i'm going to tell you the same thing i tell everyone else. lamar adapts to the people around him. if he's around the right people, he'll change. if he's not, you know -- you know the shame of it is you would think some of these people would realize the type of young man that he is and help him instead of trying to pull him down. >> gary, i appreciate you taking the time to talk to us. i'm sorry it under these circumstances. >> some people say lamar took sexual enhancements. what exactly is in these pills?

the administration has parsed that word combat. the fact is they will be in combat. we saw that even with the advance on kunduz a couple weeks ago that you had forward deployed u.s. advisers calling in air strikes, including that horrible air strikes that hit the hospital there in kunduz. they're not directly on the firing line as it were, but they're very close to the front lines. plus they have combat support. you and i have been to a lot of combat zones. it's not just a training area. >> did the president say how he felt about this decision? >> he was asked if he was disappointed. he said he's not disappointed. he said it was the right thing to do. his commanders have been telling him this for months. it is fragile and deteriorating
