how does it seem today compared to yesterday? >> reporter: well, it is calm for the moment, but it is certainly tense. no new violence, no new stabbing attacks, but as we touched on yesterday it was a violent day. five apparently stabbings against palestinians according to israeli authorities that resulted in four palestinians, at least four being shot and killed. palestinians, some people claim to witness these events tell slightly different nuanced versions, so there is certainly that divide, in you like, in terms of the accounts that we hear from both sides here. what this all means in a general sense is that the security remains in place, that added security. and that is what you're seeing behind me right here. this is one of the checkpoints outside palestinian community in east jerusalem. there is more than 10,000 people living here. in palestinian communities like this, israeli authorities have really locked them down in

recent days, established these fortified checkpoints which you can see only letting certain people out and conducting thorough checks. when men want to walk out of this community, they have to lift up their shirts at a distance and turn around, show to the authorities that they are not armed. the palestinian men really don't like this and find it undiggiving experience and the palestinian communities more generally see these sorts of lockdowns as collective punishment. whole communities being locked down and punished, if their view, because of the actions of these knife attackers. for those families of the people involved in these attacks where the punishment is even more severe, their homes are going to be demolished, their residency here is going to be revoked. that hasn't started yet but when it does, you can be sure the tension will increase alongside of that. the israeli's view all of these

administration. good to have you with us again. let's talk about that quickly. what influence do you think mayor deblasio can bring to this? >> his comments were very nice. he sympathizes with israelis. israelis are in a very tense situation. a few things that need to happen to help calm down the situation in israeli. m mahmoud abbas should condemn these attacks and has not done that yet and he does not speak on behalf of of all palestinians, especially in gaza. these are lone wolf attackers meaning they are not established by the palestinian leadership. it seems they are getting their idea to do this or being encouraged to do this through the internet and social media. i was in gaza and the west bank a few years ago. interconnectivity is high there. that is good news.
3:36 am
also palestinians can also use that to be gainfully employ but it has negative consequences and see that here. the people encouraging these attacks are preying on the hopelessness of palestinians. these are cowardly acts but still appealing to some palestinians and we need to stop that and all leaders in palestine need to encourage the people not to engage in these attacks. >> we were talking about secretary of state john kerry who is supposed to, as wend, supposed to be meeting this week with prime minister benjamin netanyahu, palestinian president mahmoud abbas, we know he has spoken to the king abdullah of jordan as well. when we talk about the fact that netanyahu opposes the nuclear threat in iran. what kind of influence the u.s. might have in this situation overall? >> there has been a rift between

netanyahu and president obama. there's a lot of tension there. they don't agree on a lot of issues. they are mostly in agreement with relation to this situation. president obama has made helpful comments, encouraging both sides to tell their people to calm down and not engage in these attacks. that's important. more engagement by president obama is very important here. he does have influence with the israelis and with the palestinians, and also engagement by john kerry, we see him doing that. again, this isn't really up to the u.s. the u.s. can only do so much until things calm down and then we really need to try and help encourage both sides to get the peace process back on track. >> the settlements that are being built in the west banks, some say, are part of the problem. how do you see a peace process forming, if that one element cannot be remedied in some way? >> well, that certainly is in siting some of this and it

compliments the peace process. the settlements probably really should not continue and president obama has been criminally of the fact that the settlements have continued. it makes the situation even more difficult. the next president of the united states will have even more trouble working through a peace process. we saw a lot of hope when president obama came into power that may be there would be peace in israeli/palestinian conflict but we haven't achieved that. the next president has even great obstacles in part because of these settlements. >> david tafuri, always appreciate your insight. thank you for being here. >> thank you. how much money do presidential candidates need to remain viable in this race? we are looking at the latest fund-raising numbers next and who has a few thousands dollars left and is fighting off calls to bow out. plus, the latest on lamar odom's recovery. what the nba star did saturday that some find encouraging.

president. there absolutely is. he is a beloved figure in the democratic party but that is very different from there being a space and there being a whole swath of democratic voters that are waiting for him to jump in. that's just not the case. it hasn't been the case for some time and i think that is closing more and more since the democratic debate this past week, where folks see that hillary clinton had a banner night and bernie sander did very well, and between the two of them, they enjoy more than three-fourths of support from democrats. but that doesn't mean that is a big part of the vice president's calculation in terms of running. if he feels like he has something to add to the race, then i think that is what he is going to base the decision on and whether he is going to be able to give it his heart, his soul, his mind, his everything like he has said in the past. so we will see. >> scotty, i see your shaking your head here. >> i do. it's not about him adding more

to the race. you can't add any more than what the progressive candidates have done right now. it's more about october 22nd when hillary clinton appears in front of the benghazi committee and how she handles that and i think that is much more important for her than the debate stage last week. we know she is a great speaker and she gets paid lots of money to be a good speaker but when she is drilled on questions on benghazi think is the final pin. you have joe biden setting the grounds so that if hillary flubs up during this benghazi trial he can step right in and be the savior to the democratic party. >> what is the indication that this hearing will be different than the other hearing? and there have been how many investigations now? i just wonder, especially after the comments we have heard from the majority leader and representative hanna and that investigator if this is more of a dud than somebody expected will be. >> one of the worst sound bites ever in political history is hillary clinton the last time going what does it matter in

4:08 am
i didn't hear anything about any of those issues. >> maria, first to you. a lot has been made about something she said during the debate when she was asked about her -- the enemy she is most proud of and she named republicans. >> so i wish she had said some republicans and that way, you don't essentially condemn the whole party. but she's not wrong. clearly, republicans have been going after her for most of her public life and that is a fact. and frankly, the comments that were made very recently about the benghazi committee, i think, really underscore the political nature and, frankly, the reason that they have been going after her, hasn't really been for them to try to find out what happened in benghazi. like you said, victor, there have been almost ten investigations, many of them bipartisan, who have found that there was no wrongdoing, that
4:09 am
there was no order to stand down, that there no cover-up, and so the american people are asking themselves why are republicans continuing to spend more than 4.5 million dollars, taxpayer dollars in resources on something that has already been investigated longer than watergate, longer this katrina, longer than many of the issues we have faced as a country? so going into this hearing, yes, it will be a big deal and she will absolutely be prepared and she will probably school them yet again the way she did the last couple times that she has been before the -- >> school? >> scotty, let me get to you on this trump/bush back and forth now. this new ad released on line from the jeb bush campaign, this attack based on potentially his lack of, in their opinion, to lead the military to be commander in chief. is this a strong argument for

4:11 am
perspective bringing this up and military -- is very smart either it's going to hurt jeb bush or hurt clinton which either way the blame game goes between the two, not necessarily anything trump does. as for military experience, there is a reason why veterans for strong america has come out and endorsed donald trump. it's because he has talked about time and time again the 250,000 veterans that are on the death list right now known as the v.a. 40,000 pink slips are handed out to the united states military over the next four years. and the border security that is causing this problem we have today! majority of veterans and military today since neither one of them have real military experience, i believe a line behind more -- more donald trump than jeb bush. >> i got you. scotty and maria, good to have both of you. >> thanks, victor. >> watch "state of the union" with jake tapper. set to be a good show. it starts later this morning at 9:00 a.m. eastern right here on. expected to be on the show is
