if you look on paper politically there's not much space in this race. and joe biden has his own history of running for president and failing. he's telling people he wants to do it. >> on paper politically or practically it's heart to see how he gets in and goes anywhere. it doesn't matter to joe biden and talked to people who have talked to him are seeming to say. he's looking at this in terms of a decision of his heart and there may not be anyone in american politics today other than joe biden who would be able to sustain this kind of flirtation will he or he won't. engender quite a bit of good will in his party. his window is close. we heard hillary clinton's campaign chairman say he might have trouble competing in nevada and the later states right after iowa and new hampshire because he hasn't started to get an organization. even barbara boxer said it's heart -- hard to see a rastionae

for a biden candidacy. he seems to want to run. >> your newspaper paid for a poll. should joe biden run? they're saying mr. vice president don't do this. if you talk to people look at what is happening with trump. people want something different and forget the old rules. i can do it when i want. their theory is hillary clinton loses iowa and new hampshire and white night. >> yeah. and i think biden has the authenticity that exposes hillary clinton's biggest hurdle at this point. she had a great debate. mitt romney had a great debate in 2012. and, you know, it catapulted him for awhile but didn't change the fundamentals of the race. i think joe biden looking at the race is hoping hillary clinton had a mitt romney-like debate

performance and the fundamentals of her campaigns have issues. >> you mentioned hillary clinton and mitt romney coming up in the next half hour. also, jeb bush. the question is after the debate if biden is making the conversation he did watch. hillary clinton got rave reviews for the debate. bernie sanders turned into a high performance. the rest of the country got to see him. one of the questions about it is, you know, even listen to donald trump here kind of biassed when it comes to the democratic race. one of the questions about republicans is the democratic family they have a strong debate. is bernie sanders polling not just himself but hillary clinton in the whole party too far to the left? >> the poor woman has to give everything away because this maniac that was standing on her right is giving everything away so she's following. that's what's happening. this socialist/communist okay.

nobody wants to say it. >> nobody would say it. but is there a point marco rubio put it this way the party is at least as far left as michael due kak kus. president obama is to the left but he won an unique moment. the republicans have a point. does mr. trump have a point? >> certainly sanders has pulled clinton left on certain issues. tpp on one. foreign policy not so much. i think another point emerged out of the debate if they are all sort of treating hillary clinton with kid gloves. he's not going to be tough enough if she's able to get through this. nobody on that debate stage wanted to after her. you saw bernie sanders, of course, do her a solid saying we're sick of your e-mails. this is an issue for her. not only is he being pulled too far to the left. i think she's walking a fine line there on certain issues like the keystone.

she's with the party there. i don't think in a general election people will know necessarily what keystone is. but on other issues i think -- >> like the republicans will try to make people understand what keystone is. >> yeah. >> to that point she had a strong debate performance and part of the commentary did she have a strong debate performance because it's a relatively weak field. would biden have made it different? one of the big questions was i don't think she gave a strong answer on her consistency. keystone is part of that and on a couple of issues she moved left. a couple she moved left. the keystone vote, does it work? >> we know that if you are learning you're going to change your position. i never took a position on keystone until i took a position on keystone. >> she wasn't for it before she was against it. >> exactly. change to john kerry in 2004 who said he was for the iraq

funding. i think the problem for hillary clinton isn't necessarily even the polling to the left so much as what does she believe. she comes up against a trade deal she participated in launching in the obama administration. it sounds like she's of course playing to the liberal base, playing to the unions against it and doesn't necessarily sound like it's what she believes. i think the republican attack on her will be who is she? what does she believe and can we trust what she's saying now. >> you'll hear her thoughts on this about her testimony to the benghazi select committee this week. the republicans gave her a gift. you had a couple of republicans suggest in public that the committee was set up in part or full to go after hillary clinton. it's become as much if not more about the e-mails than the tragic deaths of four americans in benghazi. what are the stakes for her this week as she tries to get too cute and say it's all politics. there's a risk. >> there is a risk. i think republicans did her a favor. two different high-ranking

republicans in the last couple of weeks saying it was basically about, you know, raising questions about her. but it did raise questions about her. we're talking about the questions. i think the stakes are high for her when she testifies in the way she approaches the questions and her demeanor, and does she come across as trust worthy or her testimony in one of the first hearings on capitol hill about benghazi she came across as defensive. that hurt her, i think, you know, that clip from the hearing has been used in ads and i think she has to be careful. i'm sure her campaign is calculating this right now and trying to calibrate it how she comes across. she needs to make sure she's addressing the questions but at the same time not seeming to legitimize what she said is a completely political and partisan exercise. >> we wait for the vice president until after that? it could be any day or moment. >> it will be eventually -- i think that's the kind of thing we're in here. >> waiting on joe.

welcome back to inside politics. donald trump entered the race 124 days ago. he took off like a rocket. many predicted a quick crash but the numbers don't lie. donald trump is still the driving force in the gop race in showing his staying power. he's ahead in iowa, new hampshire, north carolina third. trump way ahead in the brand new poll at 36% in south carolina.

ben carson second at 18%. jeb bush fifth at 6%. that's south carolina. nevada comes after that. again, trump ahead, dr. carson second, carly four ree -- four e people think he's the best republican to change washington in south carolina and nevada by a huge lopsided margin. even on isis he doesn't get over 50. people think he's best suited to handle the issues they want dealt with. he's leading in the first four states. he's still leading in the national polls. how do you take him out? >> you know, bush is certainly trying to. i mean, they're engaged in a twitter war now after trump said something about jeb bush's

brother george w's prosecution of the war and handling of 9/11. they put $100 million in jeb's camp. his argument has been electability. he's had a bit of a gaffe-prone run so far. the idea he can expand the party's base with latinos and african-americans and women. a lot of his gaffes have been directed at those groups. so every time we see his money dry up when he goes against trump it's not alien versus predator. it's like nerd versus jock. he tries to pull out the rule book. you're not following the rules of presidential politics. and that's trump's point. he hasn't following the ruling. >> jeb bush has become more aggressive including in the last several hours. brand new video going after trump's judgment in commander in chief. let's take a snap.

♪ >> let me talk to you about military matters. >>well, i watch shows. when i see a great of, you know, when i watch your show and all the other shows -- >> it's mocking and it's true. trump said that. he gets foreign policy advice from watching shows. it's the web video. they're not spending millions of dollars s ts to put up an ad. >> the truth is that i think what we're seeing is the question is will he reach a ceiling? he's at 38%. you have 15 candidates out there. if it came down to a point where starting to consolidate, down to a point where trump and not trump. what would he be able to do? scott walker said that he almost begged the other candidates start dropping out so we can get -- >> and none of them listened. >> no. >> and in a one on one race we have a different dynamic but we don't.

we have trump/bush dynamic. there's something about trump and bush. donald doesn't like jeb but donald has a history. this is very recent. the past week with bloomberg news raised a lot of eye brows. the country might not remember george w. bush but a lot of republicans still do. listen to this. >> when you talk about george bush say what you want. the world trade center came down during his time. >> that's talking about the world trade center. you think, okay, if he's in a fight with jeb and adding george. let's go back to 2008 he talks about donald trump said it. how impressed he was with nancy pelosi but wished she was tougher on george w. bush. >> get him out of office which personally i think would have been a wonderful thing. >> impeaching him? >> absolutely for the war. he lied. he got us into the war with lies. >> and again this, to me, is

reset your clock. because he goes after george w. bush. he has in the past spoken in favor of single payer health care. that he was impressed with nancy pelosi. he said the economy does better among democrats and said his sister would be a great supreme court justice and he's the leading candidate of the conservative party in america and leading candidate with deep roots. there's something in the water. >> there is. and jeb bush is waiving the rule book saying you're not following the rules. this is not how it's supposed to turn out. this is a year when the republican party is not following the rules. it's a difficult year for an establishment candidate to run. it's a perfect environment for donald trump. he's taking advantage of it. we've seen him make comments like this. he made a comment about john mccare war hero revered in the republican party for what he did in vietnam, but he made this comment and everyone thought that's going to hurt him and he's going to be gone and he's just gone up and up. i think what we've seen is he can make the sorts of charges

around the inside politics table and ask our reporters to share from their notebooks. >> there's a dilemma at the white house now how much the president should engage. he came out in 60 minutes interview and commented on hillary clinton's e-mail issues and he got below back from that. he said there has been no national security comprised and some people at the fbi took that to be sort of undermining the investigation. he got some blow back. then he had a news conference on friday he refused to talk about joe biden's plans. he refused to talk about clinton's trade stamps on tpp. he got blow back about that. i think that's obviously only going to get trickier for him as particularly vice president biden gets in the race.

>> maybe he'll stop talking to u us. >> elizabeth warren is just returning from a trip to eastern europe to take a look at the syrian refugee crisis. it's her second trip abroad. she's coming back and not yet made her voice known on the trade deal, which is something to keep an eye on. she is obviously probably going to be opposed to it. she was opposed to the fast track and the leading voice on that. how opposed will she be? she macked to stifle the obama administration several times and will it be yet another thing she aggressively goes after? and the other thing to watch is her endorsement. she has said she would endorse the democratic primary. joe biden has met with her. hillary clinton met with her. they're both seeking her support and over the next couple of weeks particularly if biden gets in the race i think she'll be somebody to keep an eye on. >> fun. >> candy carson, of course, is the wife of dr. ben carson

expect her to be more involved and take a more acti iive role the coming days. she was down in alabama signing paper work for her husband on the ballot there. she was the cowriter of his new book. expect her to be in iowa. they feel she connects with folks there. they're a bit of a christian power couple. she's probably one of the best known of the candidates' spouses. e grew up in detroit. she's a classically trained violinist. she's going to be out there. they see her as a force multiplier out there in places that he can't be. so it'll be interesting to see how her political persona as a candidate spouse emerges. >> you get into the stretch 105 days to iowa. any help you can get on the campaign trail matters. >> the next president has something else to look forward to the next few weeks the air force will sign a new contract for a new air force one.

the one this president has been flying is about 25 years old. they feel it's a little over the hill here, basically. they don't make the parts anymore. the next one will be souped up and spify. it may not be like trump force one. if the next president wants to get in he has to win a second term. it won't be delivered until 2023. >> now we know why trump wants the job. another wrinkle it would be the role of organized labor. no doubt most labor leaders love biden but his timing could be making it harder to win union support. as biden nears the decision there's already considerable tenses within the house of labor. hillary clinton has more backing from national leaders than bernie sanders. largely on the thought he's the more electable democrat. so are more passionate about sanders and pushing back against push for headquarters. dealing with this is no easy

task. some suggest his entry would offer a solid alternative, several sources suggest the internal labor family feud is complicated enough already. and if biden is banking on massed affections from clinton or sanders he's likely to be disappointed. we'll see you soon.
