[ gasping ] >> look at this. oh, my god. >> i was thinking, this is where they're going to find me. and i said, god, you've got to get me out of here. one of the workers came in and said there's a fire in the building. i grabbed a fire extinguisher off the wall and headed up to the roof. >> but construction superintendent curtis resig quickly figures out a fire

extinguisher isn't going to cut it. >> while i was up there, i noticed that the wind had shifted and it had picked up speed. i thought at that point, this is bad, this is real bad. >> within minutes, houston fire station 18 is on the way. >> we could see smoke from probably a mile away or so, but it didn't look that bad. >> but by the time they reached the scene, the fire is out of control. >> i was on the fourth floor. >> karen jones works next to the construction site. she caught it all on her phone. >> i got back from lunch and there were people gathered around my work area. [ gasping ] >> oh, jesus. >> someone said there's a guy out there. i turned around and i saw curtis on the ledge. >> we couldn't see curtis from our side of the building. as we were all going up the ladder, then it kind of changed in the middle of it when curtis

popped out on the balcony to the rescue. >> reporter: but he's up one floor too high, and the ladder can't reach him. >> you could tell that he was kind of planning in his mind, looking one side, looking the other side. >> and i could see the speed that the flames were moving that i was going to have to to do something. otherwise, i was going to trip like a marshmallow out there. >> oh, god. >> with his skin burning from the heat, curtis does the unthinkable. >> oh, no, oh, no, oh, no. oh! >> a circus act to save his life. but there's still too much weight on the ladder for it to even reach curtis. watch as captain brad hawthorne screams at the other firefighters to get down. >> back up! >> when they got far enough down and spun around, i told curtis to come on, like, he was cool and calm. he come across, and i told him, just hang on. >> but keep watching.

seconds after stepping on to the ladder -- >> look out! >> as it collapsed, it missed us by a few feet. you could feel the push of heat. you could hear the pop, the cracking and stuff falling. it was close. >> whenever i watch this, it just kind of -- i tear up, so i'm trying not to do that. >> a couple hours later, then we seen the video and you realize how close the wall did come, how big the fire was. >> and how close curtis comes to dying. >> i'm amazed, too, at the speed of the flames, how fast they spread, the bravery of the firefighters. just you know, i'm the one running away from the flames and they're running toward it, you know, to save people like me. >> get down! >> good job. >> i had decided to get ready to go to bed.

i come into the bathroom in the back of the house. all of a sudden, i heard a big -- a noise i can't quite explain, a big thud, an impact. and then there was just dead silence. >> utah resident neil sorensen has no idea that what he actually heard the night before would become a national story, all caught on tape. >> i knew that there was something wrong, but i couldn't identify it. >> 25-year-old jenny grossbeck and her 18-month-old baby, lilly, are on the way home from a family party. grossbeck loses control of her car, hits this bridge and flips over. her car is partially submerged in the icy waters of the spanish fork river overnight for 14 hours. the next day, a local fisherman
