ideal that the police when they respond they get to get there as quickly as possible to resolve it. however, we don't know how much information the police had at this point and generally speaking in new york city, our protocol is to slow it down and not necessarily go through that door unless we know in fact it's an active shooter scenario. so perhaps it wasn't going on at that moment when the police arrived, but finally, you know, once they establish that there is this active shooter, the police did make the entry as witnessed as five police officers shot, one tragically killed. >> seems a lot of officers who were injured going in, aggressive operation? >> yeah, the idea is to get in there quickly and get it resolved as quickly as possible to, yo u knu know to prevent an further lose of life. >> does this surprise you? we don't know what specific firearms or possible explosives the shooter had or the ammunition would be a factor in

how long we could have kept police at bay, correct? >> it did surprise me especially in light of the tragic attacks in paris and the different approach we have now in law enforce the to these types of scenarios as our prior guests stated, columbine changed everything. these people are looking to rack up body counts. this is an awful situation to where as in the past we looked to slow it down, set up a perimeter and negotiate. after paris, mumbai, west gate, the goal is to mitigate the problem to stop it. it does surprise me this went on as long as it did but turned out in the end to be some good strategy decision making. >> someone who fires on police when they respond and the fact that the shooter was taken
6:11 pm

girlfriend revenge? he a former employee there going after his supervisor that may have fired him? plain and simple, act of terrorism. was he mentally ill. they have to figure out the profile. >> dan, on the ground there, what would they be looking for forensically? >> well, you're going to be looking for obviously shell casings, any type of evidence to put together -- you're going to have to reverse engineer this crime and go through this individual's contact network, financial contacts, phone contacts, computer contacts and e-mail history, everything they can do to reverse engineer the crime and one thing we haven't discussed is the fact that no one knows for sure yet this was in fact a loan wolf. we hope that's the case. we hope that the incident has in fact stopped with this one individual, that's probably likely but we don't know that yet, either.
6:14 pm
we want to make sure this was a singular act by a single individual and not in fact a network of people. >> bob, if he did take those canisters in in order to blow up that building, they would be able to figure that out fairly quickly, yes? >> exactly. it depends on the initiation, if it's acetone and peroxide, they are highly unstable and i'm speculating they may have to blow it in place rather than try to disarm this thing. it's very, very danger rouls stuff. when people -- ieds made like this, just imp vielsed out of household items. >> if he took equipment in order to possibly blow up that building, why do we have the results we have? it just doesn't make any sense he would come out alive in someways? >> it doesn't make sense after investing that effort that he would surrender.
6:15 pm
at some point he clearly decided to change his mind. the question is what caused him to do that? is he satisfied with what he's done? or did he, you know, did he stop and realize there's nothing more that he can do? i think it would be very speculative to say at this point but clearly to me, as a behavioral scientist, there is a shift in his plans that took place here and it's a pretty seismic shift and they need to understand why. i think once they go to his home and contact other people which is going to be incredibly important, they will get a lot more information because they don't know the full extent of the damage and i mean by that the full extent of the homicides that this guy could have committed. >> you know, jackie, do you think they will have answers pretty quickly here? >> probably take a little time, i think within a couple days at least they should have some solid information, i believe. >> and dan, when they go at this

same eyes. same laugh. and since she's had moderate alzheimer's disease, i've discovered we have the same fighting spirit, too. that's why i asked her doctor about new once-a-day namzaric™. vo: new namzaric is approved for moderate to severe alzheimer's disease in patients who are currently taking, and can continue to take certain doses of both namenda and donepezil. new namzaric is the first and only treatment to combine 2 proven alzheimer's medicines into a single once-a-day capsule that works 2 ways to fight the symptoms of moderate to severe alzheimer's disease. once-a-day namzaric may improve cognition and overall function and may slow the worsening of symptoms for a while. namzaric does not change how the disease progresses. it shouldn't be taken by anyone allergic to memantine, donepezil, piperidine
