this is cnn breaking news. >> you are watching breaking news here on cnn. i'm isha sesay in los angeles. it's just after 11:00 p.m. >> i'm john vase in redlands, california, after a deadly mass shooting. >> police have identified two suspects in that shooting at a community care center in san bernadino. they are si they were both killed in this black suv in a shoot-out with police. >> police say they opened fire
11:01 pm
at a holiday party, killing 14 people, wounding 17 others. right now, the motive remains unclear. but police say there was an argument or disagreement at that party. the san bernadino police chief briefed reporters just a short time ago. >> this was a meeting, christmas party, that was taking part with employs. mr. farook, is a county employee. he did leave the party early, under circumstances that were described as angry or something of that nature. that was the information we followed up on when we followed him to the residence in redlands that let to the pursuit and the officer-involved shooting. he is one of the deceased.
11:02 pm
a lilt about the response that we had. questions that were asked earlier. from the time we received our first 911 call of a shooting takes place inside the residence, until the time the first police arrived on scene, was four minutes. they immediately entered the building, as i said, responding to an act of shear type situation, where they encountered victims and they were in search of the suspects. >> we initially put out we had information there were upwofrsd three shooters. as we continue to drill down the information, it looks like we have two shooters. the two shooters that went into the building are the two that are deceased. >> here in redlands, california,
11:03 pm
police are searching a home. they have been looking for possible explosives. it's not clear if farook rented the home, owned it or lived there. but a tip led police to the residence. this is where they first saw that black suv, which they say was driving in a suspicious manner. and police gave chase. paul vercammen has been following developments in san bernardino. we don't have paul at this hour. what we do have, now, is a narrative, starting to play out, with the details we are getting from the police chief. at least according to official here's. it seems that syed farook went to the party. there was a disagreement. he came back and that's where the shooting began. it appears there were two shooters. originally we heard from the authorities that there may have been three shooters involved in this. we do have a third person who was taken in, is detained and is in custody. we don't know what the fate of
11:04 pm
that person is, their involvement, if any, in this incident. we do now have a clear narrative or a clearer picture of what took place here a few hours ago. isha? >> we certainly do have. a much clearer picture. let me ask you quickly. i know you're about half a mile away from the redlands apartment, that the authorities have been searching, using robotic devices. at this stage, do we know if they've been able to enter the premises? any authorities? any individuals? right now, with the search, the townhouse that has continued to go on for quite some time, as we've seen they're using the robots to move into the townhouse. at this point, there's no indication, no positive indication, there could be explosives in there. what they have told us because there were explosives at the inland regional center, where
11:05 pm
the initial shooting took place, there's concern there should be explosives here. that's why they're going through that townhouse. out of abundance of caution, in past mass shooting events, the suspects have left booby-traps behind for the officials. that search continues. we don't know if authorities have managed to get inside. once they do, once they do actually manage to get inside of that apartment, that's where they may get a better idea about some kind of motive. maybe they can get ahold of computers, writes. they can track down any source material for what was maybe happening. what was the thought process going on here, for syed farook and his wife or girlfriend, the woman who was killed alongside with him, whatever that relationship was. this continues on here. it is an active search scene. some have evacuated. some have been told to stay indoors. it's relatively tense here. not as tense as it was a few hours ago. but it remains a degree of
11:06 pm
people being on-edge, if you like. isha? >> i was about to ask you that, john. with that being said, some people being evacuated and the search still underway, is this a city on alert? >> can you say that again? >> is this still a city on high alert, given the fact that this session is still under way there at the redlands apartment? >> well, what we did hear from the police chief, a short time ago, he did actually say, the police have heard from a lot of people, who are concerned, there are other suspects out there. right now, there's no indication, there are any plots out there. anybody else out there, who is planning to carry out similar style attacks. but he did say if they get that information, they will be very aggressive in hunting it down. he did try to assure the people of this community, clearly many people here are in shock because this is a very quiet, sleeper bedroom community, if you like. about 30 miles east of los
11:07 pm
angeles. it takes about an hour or so, depending on the traffic to get here, from los angeles. many people here, obviously shocked. some concerned. many others are scared. and the police chief, trying to reassure the community here, that whatever needs to be done, need l be done. and if there are plots out there, not that there's indication there are other plots, if there should be, they will act aggressively and the resources they need are being deployed here right now, to ensure that this kind of event doesn't happen again, isha. >> yeah. no doubt. john vause there for us at redlands. we appreciate it. stand by. i want to share some insight, john, we gathered from former fbi agent, bobby ciccone. >> looking like it was a workplace dispute between an employee and somebody they worked with. that supported by the early fact in the case, where the police
11:08 pm
got on to the focus area, the area of focus, they went to. when they engaged the suv, that is probably the result of somebody that was at the original attack, naming this gentleman. saying this guy left the party earlier. he was escorted out. there was a dispute between co-workers. this guy returned and the shooting ensued. >> and i hear what you're saying. but the thing i think a lot of people are trying to reconcile with that theory, and again, we haven't had anything confirmed at this stage, is the involvement of the female who was in the suv. now, of course, again, we don't know if farook was in that shoot-out that resulted in the death of two individuals. but a woman was in that suv. a woman was shot and killed. how do you reconcile that? >> my educated guess was that was him in the suv. this could have been a wife or a
11:09 pm
girlfriend that may have shared his disdain with his co-workers, going home and complaining how he wasn't being treated right. and so, she might have shared in his hatred of the co-workers. and maybe this was something that was thought about, talked about, and even planned. and then, this incident today was the inciting event that pushed him over the edge. >> have you seen something like that before? >> well, i haven't. i mean, a couple of years ago, we had a massive shooting in the postal facility in galita, california. with some of the workplace violence incidents, you do see a minor level of planning. this one seemed to be a planned more, hence the early on speculation about possible terrorism. the tactical gear they had. this all elevates it to another level. and i think that that's what the investigators will focus on going forward. >> the tactical gear, the level of arms. that speaks to training?
11:10 pm
>> it speaks to preparation. now, how much training they had, that's something the investigators will determine, whether they were going to shooting ranges on the weekend and practicing. whether they were doing other types of training. the investigation will determine that. >> and talk to me about the situation playing out in redlands, california, where the apartment is. we know authorities are using robotic devices to scan the environment, so to speak. talk to me about the challenges and just how such an operation unfolds. >> the first thing that has to be done is the scene has to be made safe. that's what the robot is doing. it's making it safe for the crime scene people. our evidence response teams and the local crime scene investigators to go in and process the crime scene. this may be an overabundance of caution. but you have to make sure the scene is safe for the crime scene people to do their jobs. they're probably waiting to go look at his computer, look at literature that he has laying around. looking at any phone books, contact sheets he might have for friends, neighbors, co-workers,
11:11 pm
journals he might have. it's going to be many, many hours. they will be there all night. the original attack scenes for forensics. and processing his house for additional evidence as to his motivation to do this. >> former fbi agent, bobby chacon speaking to me some time ago. the latest numbers are 14 people dead and 17 injured. many of them at a holiday party. we heard from survivors and anxious family members. here's what they had to say. >> they were barricaded in their office. heard a lot of gunshots, crying. when s.w.a.t. got her out, there were bodies they had to go through to get out. >> i heard rapid shooting. boom, boom, boom. and i thought, somebody's hunting. >> all of a sudden, boom. it was right here. >> boom, boom, boom.
11:12 pm
>> they're on the loose. >> i was right behind the building. >> i started walking. and i got into chaos. who knows? i'm, wow, right in the middle of it. >> employees were locked in offices and closets to try to stay safe. >> shooting at my work. people shot. in the office, waiting for cops. >> but she's okay. >> pray for us. >> well, as well as those witness testimonies, chilling videos have been coming into cnn, taken by witnesses inside that building. including the moment these people were evacuated and a promise from the man leading them out. >> are you ready? if you're not cool, i'm not walking a bit. sir? go, go. keep your hand where's i can see them. go to the left of where the deputy's at.
11:13 pm
>> thank you. thank you. try to relax. try to relax. i'll take a bullet before you do, that's for damn sure. just be cool, okay? >> one can only imagine the terror those people were experiencing, what was going through their minds. our breaking news coverage of a mass shooting in california continues after the break. stay with us, as we have much more on this developing story. this is claira.

11:18 pm
the car. one down inside the car. well, we don't know. hold on. from what we understand, one is on the run. >> hello, everyone. there is new information coming from authorities about the suspects in the san bernadino shooting. they named syed farook, and his girlfriend. >> farook left before the party before the shooting. they returned and killing 14 people and wounding 17 hours. they were killed after a chase and shoot-out with police. farook's family say they were blind sided by all of this. >> i have no idea. i have no idea, why he would do something like this. i am in shack myself.
11:19 pm
>> cnn's paul vercammen, following the developments in san bernadino. we have a clear picture of exactly what happened. they tried to clear the building of explosive devices. where does that stand at this hour? >> we can tell you what we have heard. federal agents with atf, say they fear there might be explosive devices inside the center, too. what we heard were three very muffled blasts. not the blast that's accompanied by fire. nothing that ripped apart a wall. we think they were able to get into the building and somehow detonate in a hurt locker, if you will. one of the metal boxes, safely detonate the bombs. also, john, they said at one point during the shoot-out, that
11:20 pm
the suspects through inert pipe bomb at the authorities. clearly there was premeditation here. and back where you are, in redlands, they sent in a robot because they were fearful that the suspects might have booby-trapped the residence. >> we're learning more about exactly where the weapons that were used in this attack may have come from. >> we understand one of the weapons bought legally. they're working hard on trying to trace that down now. don't forget for a second, just in case, they are keeping a lot of things close to the vest. they don't want to reveal anything that could be important. they don't think there is in terms of a trial. >> paul vercammen outside of the scene where this initial shooting took place.
11:21 pm
back to isha in los angeles. >> john, thank you. the mayor of san bernadino said this is a terrible tragedy. it's unfortunate the community was targeted. he added that city residents should not panic. >> our city is suffering from the effects of those who decided to express themselves in a violent fashion. our community is to come together to deal with the situation. it's not a time to become angry. but realize there is a need to be cautious and to be at a titaned level of alert. for the sake of our community. as we stand in the world with the things taking place, all communities need to be on alert. >> glen wilworth was a witness to the initial shooting.
11:22 pm
he is in san bernadino here in california. he joins us on the phone with details. glen, where were you when all this began? what did you hear? what did you see? >> the way it worked out, was my office, my wilding, is directly across the street from the regional center. my office window faces the inland regional center. and i was in my office and saw somebody run by my window. when i got up to investigate, they rushed into my front door, seeking shelter, saying they're shooting. they're shooting everybody. i told everybody, just lock down the building. everybody stay put. i actually grabbed my side arm and holstered up and went towards where the shooting was happening.
11:23 pm
and about halfway from my place to where the shooters were, i hunkered down by a water truck that was out on the street. and i stayed posted up there. until another 10 or 15 shots went off. i was able to see somebody, couldn't tell the description-wise. i could see somebody in the trees, get into an suv. and they started to head towards me, leaving the area. it wasn't uncommon. there were a lot of people trying to get out of the area. the only thing that was different about this, from my viewpoint, was they were moving very slow. they weren't in a hurry to get out of there, where everybody else was kind of fleeing. when they headed towards me, they got 25 yards away and changed course, and headed
11:24 pm
towards the rear of the parking lot at inland regional center and exited to the north side of where i was at. so, they were away from me. >> so, glenn, let's talk about your reaction here. you grabbed your own firearm, your own weapon, and you went out, once you secured the people inside your office. did you actually fire any shots at the two suspects? or did you not get close enough? >> no. no. you know, i looked -- where i was posted up was between my building. i really just wanted to make sure that whatever was going on didn't venture over to where i had my family and my employees. and have to deal with that situation. but as i saw the vehicle leaving, i was posted up, with aim on them. but i could not tell for sure. there was just so much chaos going on. if i wasn't 100% sure, there was
11:25 pm
no way i was going to get myself, you know, involved in anything like that. but had anything transpired from there, at least i know i was prepared. but i really didn't want to have to do something like that. nobody would have to -- nobody should have to go something like that. >> did you get a clear look at the two shooters? could you describe what they were wearing? there was some description they were wearing assault-style clothing. some people described it as even armored vest, that kind of thing. masks on their face. could you tell? >> i couldn't see anything about them at all. the vehicle they were in, the suv had tinted windows. i looked really hard to try to even see the driver's face. and i couldn't see anything. so, no. and i didn't know if there was more. i didn't know if there was one. i didn't know how many there
11:26 pm
were. after i left there and went over to my neighbor's place to check on them, the lighthouse for the blind, they were all kind of tucking themselves away, too. and they were all okay in there. so, i just wanted to make sure, you know, everybody was okay around me here. >> glenn, we're glad you are safe. >> the first officer -- the first officer that came in, too, i flagged him down and gave him a description of the vehicle right away and told him what i saw. >> right. >> well, glenn, we're glad you're safe. incredible, quick thinking there for you, to do what you had done earlier today, to take care of those people. make sure they were safe in your office. and then, to take your own action, that you did, we appreciate you sharing what you went through. and hope everything with you is -- hope you're doing okay. thank you very much. earlier, i spoke about the
