hello, everyone. you are watching cnn's breaking news coverage of a mass shooting at a california center. i'm isha sesay. it's 11:32 p.m. >> i'm john vase live in redlands, california. police have identified the suspects in that shooting in san bernadino. one is a man named syed farook, a county employee. the other, his wife or girlfriend, is tashfeen malik. both were killed in a shoot-out with police. they led authorities on a chase in a black suv. the director of the islamic group in the area says the couple left their 6-month-old daughter with her grandmother on wednesday morning. now, the grandmother had not heard from the couple and was concerned when she saw the reports of the shooting on tv.
11:33 pm
earlier in the day, police say farook and malik opened fire at a holiday party. 14 people were killed and 17 others were wounded. >> cnn's randi kaye has details on how the shooting and the police chase unfolded. [ sirens ] >> reporter: active shooter. that was the warning just before lunchtime in san bernadino, california, about an hour east of los angeles. people inside and outside heard the shots. it all happened at a conference facility where a banquet for county officials was taking place. that facility is part of a large building complex that houses the inland regional center, which provides services to people with disabilities. within minutes, the san bernadino police they are looking for not one, but possibly as many as three shooters. >> multiple people entered the room and began shooting. >> reporter: the shooters are believed to be dressed in body
11:34 pm
armor and heavily-armed. police say they came prepared for this attack. police, s.w.a.t. teams, the atf and fbi raced to the scene and set up a perimeter. they believe the shooters were still somewhere inside the large complex. loved ones of those trapped inside also arrive. this man's daughter texted him. she was hiding. >> shooting at my work. people shot. in the office, waiting for cops. >> but she's okay. >> pray for us. >> reporter: this man got a text from his wife, when the shooting started. >> she said the guy shot -- came in next to her office. and i guess started shooting. they locked themselves in her office. they seen bodies on the floor. she said right now, ambulance are taking people out in stretchers. >> reporter: as families wait for answers, california's governor is briefed. so is the president.
11:35 pm
schools and hospitals are locked down. police continue to try and track down the shooters. >> we don't know where those shooters are. they are heavily-armed. and they are possibly wearing body armor, things of that nature. it is not a safe area to be. it's very dangerous. and the fewer innocent people we have in here, the better. >> reporter: shortly after it all began, at least a dozen people exit the building, hands up. this man's son was safely evacua evacuated, only after texting his dad there were live shooters in the building. >> he was pretty nervous. pretty upset, you know? worried. he didn't know for sure what was going on. i told him to just hunker down, make sure their cell phones were off. keep the noise. don't make noise. you know, hide under the desk. >> by late afternoon, the suspects are on the run. witnesses describe seeing three men dressed in military-style uniforms, carrying long guns. take off in a black suv. hours later, a shoot-out with police leaves two suspects dead.
11:36 pm
more than a dozen victims are also dead, even more wounded. and the motive, far from clear. randi kaye, cnn, atlanta. >> police say they don't yet know a motive in this mass shooting. they're not ready to call it terrorism, at least not yet. but cnn's intelligence and security analyst, bob baer, has a different take. >> i have my biases, of course. but look at the nature of the tech. a military assault. assault rifles. they left an i.e.d. or what looked like one at the entrance to hold up the police. when they ran from the police, they were throwing pipe bombs out to break off contact. those kind of tactics, you don't get off the internet. you have to train for those. you have to plan them long in advance. i can't explain the nature of the target. but what also disturbs me like this that looks like terrorism,
11:37 pm
these two apparently were ready to die. in a situation like this, you don't pull a gun on the police and not expect to die. i mean, they were being chased. these are people that are committed to something. they are not simply like the colorado springs shooter who gave up. who was a psychopath. it's unclear whether that was terrorism or not. the man was just crazy. but this is looking more and more like terrorism. and my law enforcement contacts in california have been worried about this happening in southern california for some time. they've been a couple months telling me this. they had a suspicion something was going to occur here. i don't know if it's related. but you know, back to my biases, i have to wonder. >> just to confirm that the authorities, local authorities, have not confirmed that terrorism played a part in this. there's still a lot we don't know. and we wait for updates on them. stay with cnn's continuing coverage of a mass shooting in california. we will be right back after a quick break.

12:02 am
there was an officer-involved shooting. that's count, i'd been told that we had 20 or 21 officers that were involved in that gun battle with the suspects. the two suspects that were in that car are both deceased, and i have their names. first one has been identified as syed rizwan farook. he is 28 years old. i am told that he is u.s.-born. the person that was with him is a female. she is deceased as well. her name is tashfeen malik. she is 27 years old. i do not have any additional information on where she is from at this point. i'll talk about the investigation a little bit. there was some questions that you guys asked at an earlier press conference about a person that had left the meeting angry. this was a meeting, christmas party-type event.

it was taking place with the county employees at the inland renalal center. mr. farook is a county employee. he works with his title as an environmental specialist in the public health department, has been ployed there for five years. he was at the party. he did leave the party early under some circumstances that were described as angry or something of that nature. that is the information we were following up when we encountered him back near this residence. he is now one of the deceased. we have gone back and forth between information that they were married or that they were engaged, but there was a relationship. >> the gentleman you're holding and questioning, how does he fit? >> i have not been able to get an update as to whether or not that person was involved. as i said before, when the officer-involved shoot og cured, the initial officers we had

day unfolded. >> reporter: well, what was extremely tense is the police put up their yellow tape and sealed people from getting into the center. 670 people employees in total working there. it doesn't mean other county employees couldn't go to a party there they were having this day. when these people could not get inside, they started trying to use their cell phones to contact loved ones. one young man was absolutely beside himself. he was trying to call his sister. he said that i don't care anymore. i'm going to run through this police tape and run in there. i reminded him in these situations, you are told if you are a hostage or trapped in somewhere to turn your phone off because you wouldn't want that ring or the buzz of a text or something else to attract attention to you, the very sort of thing that could lure active shooters toward you. a tense moment. high anxiety. people on pins and needles.

control for the car was found inside the suv. they believe the plan was to detonate those explosives remotely once the gunmen had left the scene, either the remotely didn't work because they were too far away or they didn't carry out that part of the plot. that's coming from us from our justice correspondent. the latest numbers from san bernardino police, 14 people dead. another 17 injured. many of them were at that holiday party, and throughout the day, we've heard from both survivors as well as anxious family members. >> they were barricaded in their office. they heard a lot of give up shots, crying. when s.w.a.t. got her out, she said there was bodies that they had to go through to get out. >> i heard rapid shoot, just boom boom boom boom boom, and honestly, i thought, oh, god, somebody is hunting. >> all of a sudden, boom, it was here. >> boom, boom, boom. >> and i was right behind the building.

fifteen shots went off. i was able to see somebody. couldn't tell description wise anything other than i could see somebody moving through the trees get into a black suv. >> glenn, let's talk about your reaction. you grabbed your own weapon and you went out once you secured the people inside your office? did you actually fire any shots at the two suspects or did not not get close enough? >> no. you know, i looked -- i actually, where i was posted up was inbetween my building, i really just wanted to make sure that whatever was going on, it didn't venture over to where i had my family and my employees. >> reporter: joining me now is the executive director for the los angeles chapter of care, the council on american islamic relations. he's live in los angeles. thank you for being with us. clearly right now everybody is searching for a motive in all of
12:22 am
this. i know that you have come out and condemned this attack, but clearly you've spoken to the family. we've heard from farook's brother-in-law. what more can you tell us? >> well, of course we don't know the motives, and the family is devastated, like all americans today. filled with sorrow and mourning, and then we express on their behalf, their heart-felt condolences to all the families of the victims injured and killed and just pray for whoever is responsible to pay the price for it. the family is devastated. like all people, and this is the time for us to express solidarity among all of us americans in rejecting whatever the motives might have been. there's absolutely no justification for such horrendous behavior. >> reporter: have you had a chance to speak at any length with the family of syed farook, and if there was any indication -- we heard from the brother-in-law saying no one
12:23 am
expected this. he had just spoken to him a week ago. what else has the family been saying to you? >> i spoke with them. they're as shocked as anybody else. they had no clue that this could happen. they -- this is a -- the suspect is married, has a six-month old baby. you wouldn't expect -- they have no reason, what made him snap. just is it mental illness, workplace related, it's unknown to us. all they can do is share with everybody's sorrow and prayers that this is over quickly and that the pain and suffering of all these families is eased. >> reporter: you were very quick to come out and hold a news conferen conference. even had farook's brother-in-law there to talk about this. explain to me why you took that action. >> well, because we're living in
12:24 am
a very difficult time. there is a lot of us laislam ph fuelled by pundits trying to blame a community for the acts of a few. again, we're mourning as a nation after what happened in colorado springs by someone who is also responsible for his act, not the christian community or the american community. same thing. we felt there was a need for our fellow americans to know that all american muslims share with the rest of the country or sorrow and shock and agony for what happened. it was important for the family. they wanted to make sure that people know how devastated they are, and they insisted to being here, although they're going through their sorrow as we speak. they drove to be at the office and speak to fellow americans and say today we're all victims. we stand united in our sorrow, and the only way we can come through this is through our
12:25 am
solidarity. >> reporter: okay. so we shall leave it there. we appreciate you being with us, the executive director for care, the american islamic relations in los angeles. thank you for being with us. we appreciate that. >> and you are watching our breaking news coverage. we'll get you back out to san bernardino, california for the latest on the mass shooting there after this quick break. . >> we initially put out we had information that there were upward of three shooters. right now as we continue to drill down on information, and the witness statements that we have, it looks like we have two shooters and we're pretty comfortable the two shooters that we believe went into the building are the two shooters deceased up on san bernardino avenue.

welcome back to our viewers in the united states and all around the world. i'm rosemary church at cnn center. >> reporter: i'm john vause in san bernardino. police have identified the suspects of a shooting in san bernardino. one is a man named syed, farook, a count employee. this is the first picture we have of them. the other, his wife or girlfriend is tashfeen malik. both were killed after they led police in a chase. dressed in assault style cho clothing, they left their six month old daughter with her grandmother on we understadnesd
12:30 am
morning. the grandmother hadn't heard from the couple and became concerned when she saw the reports about the shooting on television informal earlier in the day the couple opened fire at a holiday party, killing 14 people, wounding at least 17 others. >> we have this crime scene. we have the crime scene on san bernardino. we have a house in redlands is where the pursuit originated where the information took us to. that's being actively worked as well. and as i said, mr. farook was a county employee. so we have, obviously, secured his office space in case that has any component to the investigation. >> reporter: cnn's randi kaye has details on how the shooting and the police chase unfolded. >> reporter: active shooter, that was the warning just before lunchtime in san bernardino, california. about an hour east of los angeles. people inside and outside the building targeted heard the shots. >> i was working and i hear boom. >> it happened at a conference
12:31 am
facility where a bank wet was taking place. that facility is part of a lge building complex that houses the inland regional center which provides services to people with disabilities. within minutes, the san bernardino police alert they are looking for not one but possibly as many as three shooters. >> multiple people entered the room and began shooting. >> reporter: the shooters are believed to be dressed in body armor and heavily armed. police say they came prepared for this attack. police s.w.a.t. teams the atf and fbi raced to the scene and set up a perimeter. they believe the shooters were still somewhere inside the large complex. loved ones of those trapped inside also arrive. this man's daughter texted him. she was hiding. >> shoot agent ing at my office. people at my work. in office waiting for cops. >> she's okay?
12:32 am
>> pray for us. >> this man got a text from his wife when the shooting started. >> she said the guy came in next to her office and i guess started shooting. they locked themselves in. in her office. they seen bodies on the floor, and she said right now balance are taking people out, in stretchers. >> reporter: as families wait for answers, california's governor is briefed. so is the president. schools and hospitals are locked down. meanwhile, police continue to try and track down the shooters. >> we don't know where the shooters are. they are heavily armed. and they are possibly wearing body armor, things of that nature. it is not a safe area to be. it's very dangerous, and the fewer innocent people in here the better. >> reporter: shortly after it all began, at least a dozen people exit the building, hands up. this man's son was safely evacuated, only after texting his dad that there were live shooters in the building. >> he was pretty nervous, pretty
12:33 am
upset. you know, worried. he didn't know for sure what was going on. i told him to just hundre hunke don't make noise and hide under the desk. >> reporter: by late afternoon the suspects are on the run. witnesses describe two men taking off in a black suv. hours later a shootout with police leaves two suspects dead. more than a dozen victims are also dead. even more wounded. and the motive, far from clear. randi kaye, cnn, atlanta. >> reporter: and cnn's paul following developments outside the community center. paul, by all accounts, this was a massive police response. we're getting more details about how quickly police arrived on the scene. >> reporter: yes. they said it took them a mere four minutes to arrive on scene, and even so, the suspects has
12:34 am
fled, perhaps more information about calculation. we were seeing federal agents here, san bernardino police, san bernardino county sheriffs. we were also seeing members of alcohol, tobacco and firearms because of the fear of bombs. when it was learned that some sort of exchange of fun fire has taken place where you are in red lap redlands. officers ripped out of here. and the armored s.w.a.t. vehicles, they used those at one point to go ahead and box in, if you will, the suspects in a move, and then they carefully walked upon the vehicles, the vehicle, the suv, shot out the windshield, among other things and used the armored personnel carriers to use them as covers so they uld unload on the suspects in this, as you heard,
12:35 am
21 law enforcement officers involved in this shoot out, for lack of a better term. they were just trading fire in a neighborhood not far from here. we could hear the whir of helicopters. san bernardino county, high anxiety today. >> it was incredible. when you look at the suv. it was literally covered th bullets by the time it was said and done. one of the issues at the community center, the possibility of explosives. what's the latest with that? >> reporter: from what we understand and with what we heard, we heard the muffled sound what sounded like successful detonation. we don't know if the bombs were live or active. you talked about a bag they had, and federal agents off camera said one of the pipe bombs they threw at the shooting scene
12:36 am
wasn't active. they took that precaution, it sounded like because of the muffled nature, to blow up whatever was there. so that resolved itself well. otherwise you would be seeing fire behind me. that wasn't the case. >> yeah. okay. thank you, paul. live outside the community center where the shooting began. thank you, paul. >> syed farook and tashfeen malik were killed in the shoot out with police. officials say fook shot at them from this suv. this all happened not far from the community center. it was a chaotic scene with a device that looked like a bomb being tossed from the vehicle. a reporter for the press enterprise was caught up in the middle of this after getting a tip. >> i saw three or four police cars with lights blazing go on
12:37 am
san bernardino avenue, and i followed them, and as i was following them, i heard a thunderous sound, and there were these -- there was a strange noise, and i seen, i didn't know what it was, but i guess it was bullets whizzing through the air. it was like a whizzing sound, and i pulled over, and i got out of the car, grabbed my camera, and i could see some police officers ahead of me, and then i didn't hear any shooting, and i started walking toward it, and then there was a thunderous outbreak of gunfire. a police officer yelling for me to get down. all guns were drawn, and as this was going on, waves and waves of police officers were coming from behind me. >> david, did you see?
12:38 am
this was all at the location of the suv, correct? >> yes. and i did not see the suv. i did not see the shooters. or any of that. you know, it's just with the situation where there was just a lot of gunfire, and the shooting went on for about a ten minute period, i would say, and then it got quiet again. >> when you were out of your vehicle and heard shots, was it your impression, you may not know the answer, was it your impression there was incoming fire, or was it mostly outgoing? >> i don't know which way it was going. that was one of the scariest things. i could see police and they were probably engaged in shooting, but i couldn't tell which police were shooting and which were not. it seemed as though waves of police were just arriving behind me and running ahead of me with guns drawn, guns of, you know, some had handguns.

cnn center. >> we are learning new details about the suspects in this mass shooting. the director of a los angeles islamic group says syed farook and tashfeen malik left their young daughter with their grandmother. the woman called them after hearing reports of a shooting but there was no answer. police say farook, a county employee attended and abruptly left a holiday party. along with malik he killed at least 14 people and wounded at least 17 others when they returned with long guns. authorities say they found a bag with explosives and a detonator at the scene. they were killed hours later after a chase and a gun battle with police. authorities are trying to work out a clear motive for this attack. it's still early in the investigation. law enforcement analysts, shared his thoughts just a short time
12:44 am
ago. >> there's still a lot left to be determined in this particular case. as you heard the chief say earlier, during the press conference, he is determined to get to the bottom of the motive, but at this point, it could be a variety of things. i think we have to accept that narrative at this point because it's perplexing and confusing and unusual, this thing is unfolding through the course of the last 12 hours and there's a lot to be determined still. >> a lot of people are making the point that clearly the events that happened after an argument at a holiday party go way beyond what would be a normal reaction for a dispute between work colleagues and an end of year party. so at least in your assessment, there has to be something more to this than simply angry words at a staff party. >> well, certainly. if you look at the fact that they left, he came back, the
12:45 am
weapons he was armed with, and the fact, too, as well, the number of people that were injured and killed. this was a horrible, horrible crime. and this is more than just one or two people having a falling out at a christmas party. this is something much more in depth than that, and it certainly, without question, there was some planful organization to this family member that occurred. so rather, this argument was started with some real intent of coming back, but it's just very per fl perpl perplexing, but in my experience, i'm pretty sure this was a staged event, and they knew they were going to come back and do harm to people. >> we will continue to follow breaking news in california. when we come back, we'll hear from those who heard the shots and then simply hoped to get out alive.

>> the agency just to help other people and audacity of people to come out here and want to shoot it up is insane. growing up, we were german. we danced in a german dance group. i wore lederhosen. when i first got on ancestry i was really surprised that i wasn't finding all of these germans in my tree. i decided to have my dna tested through ancestry dna. the big surprise was we're not german at all. 52% of my dna comes from scotland and ireland. so, i traded in my lederhosen for a kilt. ancestry has many paths to discovering your story. get started for free at ancestry.com.
