day. >> he's describing a substance use disorder. that's a new name for an age-old disorder, addiction. it's a brain disease and causes you to seek out drugs no matter how horrible the consequences. in fact, casey almost died of a heroin overdose. he wants an an dote because it saved him like it did for this woman. she's overdosed and is no longer breathing. >> we've given you some. >> watch what happens when she gets narcan. >> can you sit up? >> yeah. >> come on. >> do you want a glass of water? >> casey's message with others is starting to be heard. >> addiction is not new.

>> in october, president obama announced efforts to double the number of producers that can describe narcan. it was welcome news here in new hampshire where the cries for help, any sort of help are the loudest and we kept asking ourselves, why here in new england? the answer in part is because heroin is particularly easy to get and very cheap. how easy is it to find if you want to find it? >> that's a good question. i guarantee you there's nobody in new england with money in their pocket that is saying god i wish i could find heroin if they really needed it. >> you got money, you can find it? >> yeah. >> casey hopes the days when he was out buying heroin stay behind him. he spends free time now with his 3-year-old son and staying true to his recovery. still, this wasn't the life he ever imagined. slowly becoming the new face of a former heroin addict. >> people think that in a person suffering from alcoholism or addiction, they have this image that comes up in their mind and

possible. >> sanjay, this is powerful, powerful stuff. how is it the guide book for psychiatric dig notice, it characterizes addiction as a brain disorder. >> it won't change the resources and amount of money needed to provide the resources. i think it's a stigma issue. i think if you say this is a brain disease, then could you treat it like you treat diabetes or cancer or something else that's a physical disease of the body? possibly. it's not going to happen overnight by any means but i think that's an important first step when doctors including this bible of psychiatric diagnosis says this is a brain disease. >> one of the most stunning parts of the piece there is we saw narcan being used to revive that woman. how widely available is that and how does that differ from what

law enforcement and first responders have available? >> it's becoming more widely available. i have something. it's an -- binds to receipt tors so nothing else can cause breathing problems or anything else for a period of time. it works really well. >> and fast. >> and fast. the issue is some people will say hey, that's just empowering and enabling addicts. i have safety valve. i don't have to worry about an overdose because i have narcotic can. it comes in a vile like this if one is in the middle of an overdose, call 911 first and make sure to give them breaths yourself but then administer this by injection or enter nasally. it can save someone's life. you saw it there. it happens around the country and hospitals and they want to make this more widely available to address that part of the heroin epidemic.
