escaped from the scene and is probably armed. >> there's been no game claims of responsibility and police have not named any suspects. indonesia has been on high alert in recent weeks with the police and military joint operations focused on hitting the east indian mujahadin which has pledged support for isis. one gunman, maybe more is believed to have been holed it. it appeared the police were preparing to go in? >> that's right, john. we actually saw several dozens of them fully armed going to the building. we're actually seeing now men in civilian clothes also entering the building. the situation is quite tense around this area. it's been cordoned off. i'm seeing across the street just by the side of the building where the u.n. offices are of many bystanders watching from afar.
10:02 pm
but we're being kept quite far away from this. and from what i'm seeing, though, this is an operation definitely going on here. the police have surrounded the skyline building. and there's right now an operation going on for sure. john? >> and just for our viewers who may be joining us, kathy, let's just recap what we have learned over the last hour or so from police in terms of the targets here, what was used by these attackers. and what exactly the police have been telling us. >> john, i recaearlier, the nat police spokesman spoke to report just outside of the building. where the -- in front of the police station there was a target. there were four people who were killed. one of them a policeman and three civilians, but he could
10:03 pm
not confirm if the civilians were innocent bystanders or were actually attackers who lobbed grenades at the police station earlier today. he staid there were motor bikes as well. although earlier witness accounts said the men had walked towards the police station and then threw the grenades at the policemen. killing one of them there. there was a an exchange of gunfire. and there was at least one armed suspect who escaped from the scene and fled into the skyline building, which was just across the police station. it was an intersection, a very busy intersection. we have office buildings around the commercial establishments here. everything is on lockdown now. there are reports that people are still in the offices in the buildings around the area, and we're seeing as of this moment a police operation that's still going upon john? >> kathy, the death toll you just gaye us four which you
10:04 pm
received from the indonesian police spokesman do we have any more details as to whether those numbers i collude the attackers? were the attackers killed and what took place today. >> the policeman said he could not confirm that. he said we were still unable to identify the civilian victims. so he would not confirm that. and he also said that it was still unclear who was responsible for this attack. certainly no one has claimed responsibility for it. although there's a lot of speculation here from social media now, people who were claiming to know of the attack, but again that's all confirmed right now. all we can say for sure is what the police told us yerler, that four people died in the i a tack. >> kathy, just explain to us exactly where you are right now. not far from the skyline building in relation to the starbucks, which was hit in up with of these explosions.
10:05 pm
and also the building which houses the united nations. so can you sort of put that all into sort of perspective for us? >> it's an intersection. i've gone closer now. there's also a mcdonald's which is populated 24 hours. it is opened 24 mourps it's very crowded all the time. so this mcdonald's is right across from the police outpost, which is at the center of the street at the intersection, and you have the u.n. offices, the office building that houses the u.n. is right across it. we also have a department store where i'm at now, where the mcdonald's was. it's located. so yus imagine how busy this area is. also a main thoroughfare. and it's very close to
10:06 pm
government office and commercial buildings. john? >> okay, kathy. we would like you to stay with us, but in the meantime, we've got bob baer, our security analyst joining us now from tell rude in colorado. so bob, no one is saying it, certainly not officially at this point that this could be isis. either isis directive or isis inspired. if you look at how this is carried out, maybe as many as 14 attackers involved, certainly four confirmed by police. what's your take? >> i think it looks like isis right now. of course, maybe the indonesians doens know. there's been no claim so far. but it looks like the paris attack, multiple teams, explosions. weapons. and you have to deep in mind that the indonesians have fairly well closed down the o old terrorists groups have been you shall kred in that country. and indonesian radicals have moved towards the islamic state. and they've gone to syria and
10:07 pm
they've gone to iraq where they've got training. on the other hand, a lot of them are coming home. right now my guess is islamic state. >> how good is indonesian intelligence? >> they're good locally but, you know, as far as syria and iraq go, they have no intelligence resources there. they can't keep track of that. they get good intelligence. locally they've got some problems. but, you know, these groups are underground groups. and they're very difficult to get all of them. and we have to remember that islamic state affiliates are expanding very quickly all over the world. whether it's libya or indonesia
10:08 pm
or tunisia. they're not going away. this virus is getting stronger rather than getting weaker despite of the fall of ramadi and losing a lo the of territory in iraq. >> where would someone get grenades and automat weapons? >> there's always smugglers. >> is it difficult? >> no, it's not difficult. if you're well organized and you have money and threw believers, you can always get weapons. and it doesn't matter what part of the world. i can't imagine someplace where you couldn't get them. and these people are so determined and they do have a lot of money and sympathizers. we just have to admit it.
10:09 pm
>> they may not agree with all the tactics, because they're fighting a cause many people think is worthwhile. people are leaving the taliban for the islamic state. it's picking up strength. >> a couple of days ago there was a bombing in istanbul in a tourist area. ten germans killed. obviously tourists were target there had. and again in downtown jakarta. an area with a starbucks, mcdonald's, embassy. there seems to be a pattern here, right? >> exactly. and the turkish police are very good. i've worked with them before. thierks ordinary. but they can't keep frac of all the people coming across the border. and they can't keep track of weapons as well. it's not like in turkey you can buy an automatic weapon over the counter. and the police are very, very good. they still can get explosives in, they can still get weapons
10:10 pm
in. and the tactics here, or the strategy, i should say, is to disrupt as many countries as they can. and they seem to be doing a pretty good job of it. >> job, as you talk about the ease with which one can pass through the borders in indonesia or at least smuggle things, let me ask you about regional cooperation between indonesia and its neighbors. how good is that when it comes to fighting this terror threat? >> it's very good. but they're still blind sided. you know, we have to go back and look at the islamic state. what they really need are sources inside these groups. they need sources in raqqah that they don't have. it's impossible to recruit a decent source. and with the islamic state getting better at understanding our intercept capabilitiecapabi they're just simply going off
10:11 pm
the air and using courier, they're using encryption and the rest of it. it gets more and more difficult to track them. these people have learned a lot from that. >> bob baer, former cia operative and now a security and intelligence analyst giving us insight from telluride in colorado. let's go to a witness to the attack. a chief representative officer. he joins us on the phone. just explain to us exactly how close have you been to this scene? anticipate what has been going on. what have you seen in the last couple of hours? >> it's just 500 meters away from our office. we can see a lot of city.
10:12 pm
we just saw really huge smoke and sounded like an explosion. and we were wondering what it is. because at first we thought it was from the construction site which is next to our building. but then we heard it was near the starbucks or the police station. then there were another explosion, five or six explosions or gunshots, which was really weird. then we realized okay, there's something going on. our building is completely locked down. we cannot enter or leave the building. but so far everything is safe here. it probably will take a few hours, i guess. but i don't know what happens. nobody knows here what's going on. >> i don't know if you' been told, i imagine to stay away from the window, but what can you tell us about the scene playing outside right now? >> it looks like the whole
10:13 pm
street is still locked down. maybe there's still another terrorist i don't know. but it looks like nobody is moving and it's like a huge area 100 or 200 meters around the area. and a lot of police and rescue cars are parked there. it's still not over yet. >> you heard five or sixes blasts initially. have you heard any explosions since. we heard there has been a another explosion in the last ten or 15 minutes, not far from where you are. >> to be honest, i didn't hear anything but what happened two years ago. our friends tell us where they
10:14 pm
are and they're safe or something like that. or a lot of rumors. that there are more explosions in the cities. but then it turns out it was just a fake and nobody knows what's really going on. nobody knows if it's true or not. >> clearly everybody is on edge, obviously. >> when you look out your window we see an incredible military presence there right now. with armored personnel carriers, soldiers and a lot of police. can you can you see that from your vantage point? >> yeah, we can see that from here. >> how does it look to you from where you are? >> yeah, it looks really like a massive presence of police and military. but yeah, as i said before, they're not moving to the scene. it still looks like they're
10:15 pm
still waiting for something or somebody. maybe they're still monitoring a person, yoen. but it looks a little bit like that. and before the police, a lot of people were just in the first step going to the scene like it was pretty crowded there. and suddenly everybody rupp away. so something happened obviously. but we do not know anything else. >> and obviously your ear hunkering in place. you're in your building right now. are there a lot of other people there with you? what's the situation where you are. describe that for us. >> yeah, we're sitting here with the police. the local indonesians are working with us. they're worried with their family and friends and check if they're safe and home. everybody is a little bit worried because nobody knows how long it will take. what's the next step. but y5, we haven't had a chance to wait here because it's
10:16 pm
probably the safest place and not to be on the street at moment. >> christian, thank you for being with us. thank you for describing the scene and what you have heard over the last couple of hours. one of many people now who are in a lock down situation in downtown jakarta. a very busy area. right in the central downtown where there's luxury hotels. the u.n. headquarters also on lockdown. we also have this word coming to us from the u.s. embassy keling citizens to shelter in place, not to leave. similar advice being put out to the australian citizens in jakarta as well. i imagine a lot of other embassies are putting out a similar advice to their nationals in indonesia's capital right now. >> we are closely watching the situation involving the skyline building. police have entered a short time ago in pursuit of a gunman,
10:17 pm
gunmen. the numbers are fluid here, but we know at least one armed individual is believed to have entered this multistory building that actually use to house the old cnn bureau, i believe, as you have been telling me. so now the situation is they are inside. we don't know what is playing out. we know on the ground floor of this multistory building, there were commercial establishments. again, unclear whether the entire building has been evacuated while this operation is ongoing. but this is something we're watching very, very closely. kathy quia is there and we'll bring you details as they come into us. we're going to take a very quick break. stay with us.

>> police say at least four people are dead, including one policeman in an explosion in city center. it's one of several blasts that happened in the capital. no one has claimed responsibility at this point. but the suspicion is falling on isis. >> a police spokesman said the attackers used grenades a thaz
10:22 pm
targeted a police station. a gun fight broke out between officers and the attackers. right now, police are vournding a building as they search for the suspects in this attack. >> cnn indonesian reporter is in jakarta. he's here with more on this. i believe you're there on the scene. just tell us what is happening right now. in particular with regards to the skyline building. are police going in there at this point. are they searching ining the b or is it more of a standoff right now? >> i think we may have lost her. we're hearing word from indones indonesia's president. he was not in the capital at the time. he's kit his trip short to return to the capital. he's now saying that these attacks are -- or these blasts are an attack of terror,
10:23 pm
statement, urging indonesians not to speculate on who may be behind the attacks. many people are believing that possibly isis could be behind this. but there are a lot of other suspects in the area. it looked a lot like the attacks that happened in paris. >> this is a group, isis, and its oko horts and affiliates that's growing rapidly and stronger around the world. this is a threat now that faces us all. indonesia in the spotlight. but it's not been confirmed who's behind these attack. no one has claimed responsibility. but as john just pointed out, we are hearing from the press agency, now reporting that the indonesian president is calling the jakarta blasts acts of terror. we'll continue to follow the situation for you. >> jeremy douglas is with the
10:24 pm
united nations office on drugs and crime. he's in jakarta and he heard a series of blasts. >> i was in the car. and our driver got a call from our security asking where we were. they said a bomb had gone off in front of the building. but we were actually luckily pulling into the back of the building. we pulled up and got out of the car. there was a little bit of chaos because people weren't quite sure what was going on. and then a second bomb went off as we were getting out of the car. and we basically rushed into the building. then a third bomb went off. we went up to our office on the tenth floor and now we're in lockdown on the tenth floor op our office building. and then a fourth and a fifth and a sixth bomb and then we heard small arms fire in the street in front of the building. >> and i understand there's an internal note there from the u.n. saying at least one u.n. employee has been injured? >> yeah. we're not -- there's a lot of information flying around, and i don't zsh i'm not privy to that, but we've got our -- one of my
10:25 pm
u.n. colleagues is rushing to find out what's happened. and see if -- see what need to be done. but i can't confirm that at this time. >> okay. >> and jeremy, so just walk us through what your sense is of the situation at the scene now in term of police response, and in term of just, you know, the situation on the ground right now. >> sure, sure. i'm looking out the window right now at a couple of armored personnel carriers and tactical teams. what we're told is there's a gunman who's holed up in a small shopping arcade across the street, shopping mall. where -- so they're keeping the corner locked down. so i can see probably about 40 police, tactical or s.w.a.t. team-type police right now.
10:26 pm
>> so jeremy, paint a picture of this area. i've been to jakarta a few times. if i'm not mistaken, this is an out market area of jakarta. we understand the u.n. is there, a number of embassies. luxury hotels. we know there was a starbucks which appears to have been at least maybe targeted in this. i guess we don't know. but it was certainly damaged by the blasts. >> yeah, this's exactly right. you couldn't get much more central in jakarta if you tried. you've got major international hotel chains all over the place. you've got the u.n., the japanese embassy. so there's a big diplomatic community, there's a big business community. if you wanted to get visibility for what you're trying to do, this is the place to do it. in fact, that's why i came down. i'm based in bangkok but i've come down to talk to the government about that exactly that.
10:27 pm
just happens to be interesting timing. >> jeremy douglas from the u.n. jakarta speaking to us. just a heads up for our viewer the. there's a very lengthy delay here, so bear with us. we would like to talk about what is happen right now. explain what is happening around you and what have you seen? what's the very latest? >> i eemt right now standing like 500 meeters before me. there's a scene when the bomb explosion happened early this morning. this is the right spot.

10:29 pm
but chief of police already been on the ground. also the chief of the intelligence in this country and tried to negotiate or put things to be done until the her ror and the terror are finished. john? >> just to clarify a few things for us that you said just then, do we know from the police if there are hostages inside that building that police have surrounded because the gunmen are believed to be inside? and did you say that negotiations are under way with the gunman? do i have that right? >> well, we don't know yet because there's no official information coming from the authority, but they are there and the gunmen, a couple of
10:30 pm
gupmen, we don't know how many approximately the number of the gunmen are still in the building. but yeah, they're still there and they tried to, you know, make it they come out or surrender. >> okay. we appreciate you being with us, giving us that live update, painting a picture of exactly what has been happening. as you say, they wanted to get attention, this was an area ripe for being hit in this kind of attack. thank you very much for being with us. please stay with us. much more on oyou are breaking news. we'll be back in just a moment. stay with us. i am about to embark on a long and dangerous journey.

police say at least four people are dead including one policeman in a series of grenade and gun attacks in jakarta. >> a spokesperson said they used grenades. a gun fight broke out between officers and the attackers. and police are actively searching now for a number of suspects. bring us up to speed. what are you hear, what are you seeing?
10:35 pm
>> i left the skyline. what we saw was the starbucks cafe with all the windows blown out. there was a ro rt that there was a gun fight that happened there after grenades were thrown at the police station across the street. the aftermath of that, seeing starbucks now and that's probably why, as we reported earlier, heavily armed men entered the building where the starbucks coffee shop was. it took a while, but then as i left the build, i saw them coming out and the police cordoning off. it's still unclear, though, what really transpired and who's behind it and what happened to the armed suspects who reportedly escaped after the gun
10:36 pm
fight in the building. isha? >> kathy, we're having a few problems with your audio. it's not very clear. so apologies to our viewers for that. but let me just get some clarification. are you saying that the operation in the skyline building is over? is that what you're saying? >> i left a few minutes ago and walked further down the street. but the police let journalists and bystanders come in. they took out some of the [ no audio ] >> okay, we've got some problems with kathy's line there. kathy with eel have to leave it there. we're having some problems hearing you. we appreciate the reporting and for the update. just to remind our viewers what kathy said there, she left the skyline building where police had surrounded with the thought that maybe some gunman, or at least one gunman had gone inside. she passed a starbucks cafe with
10:37 pm
windows blown out. this was across the road from the police station which appeared to be the place of the initial attack. the starbucks cafe was also hit with these explosions. and kathy reporting to us that at some point between the initial attack and now, police, heavily armed police have raided that building where the starbucks cafe is located in search of other suspects. it's not known at this point if the suspects have escaped or if they're still being pursued by the police or if they've been caught or they've been killed. so clearly there's a lot of unanswered questions at this point. all of this happening just within the last couple of hours. and it's still an active crime scene, because there is at least one heavily armed suspect, according to police, who is still on the ploops. >> yeah. indeed, the indonesian president coming out and saying, calling these blasts an act of terror. as you saw with those picture, we had on the screen just a short time ago, very, very
10:38 pm
strong security presence there at the scene as you might expect. we're still trying to get some clarify as to to what is happening, twho they're in pursuit of. and the skyline building we've been watching a great deal. >> we will leave this story for the time being as we try to work out what's been going on. if we get updates, we will bring them to you. in the meantime, another major story. financial markets have been slidi sliding further into negative territo territory. in tokyo, the nikkei took a big hit. look at that, down almost 2.75%. it was a little bit worse during the day. hong kong down by a third of 1%. the shanghai up and down, all over the place for most of the day. now it looks to be up by more than 1%. and in australia, the asx 100 closed down by 1.5%. all new york indices are down
10:39 pm
10% or more from their recent highs. the dow fell 364 points. the nasdaq was down 3.5%. the s&p 500 lost 2.5%. let's bring in cnn asia pacific editor live this hour in congress hong kong. so andrew, stocks in china rebounding just a little bit? they're pretty much down to their lows we saw last summer. six months of government efforts to prop up the markets, pretty much for nothing? >> well, yes. in a word. i mean, it's been a miserable time to be an investor in shanghai as we all know. this market is so distorted at the moment now with restrictions on what you can and can't sell. it's very difficult to get a handle on exactly what the valuation of the shanghai market other than most people saying it's way too high. but it's a reflection of what's really been a miserable start to the year. not just for investors in the dhien fla markets but pretty much across the wrld.
10:40 pm
you mention those numbers on wall street in correction territory. from late last year. more than 10%. yes, the markets in asia did crawl off their lows for the day. of at one point, japan was down 4%, which is a very, very big move for the nikkei. shanghai, nikkei in tokyo, all down by a long way from the start of this year. the zip, just to give you some sort of context down by 7.5% as well. it's been a tough start to the year. the plunging oil price, oil in asia continuing to fall. stabilize just in the last hour or so. around about the $30 barrel mark. and also what's going on in the chinese economy, how week sit. and what does that mean for the
10:41 pm
broader global economic story. we can't really read anything into that at this stage. >> i guess the question is how will that compete into the european markets and u.s. markets. and there's a lot of to go through. >> we continue a short time ago, the lives of at least four people, including one police officer. we will have the very latest for you after a break. stay with us. we'll be right back back after this this . and can you explain why you recommend synthetic over cedar? >> welcome back, everybody. breaking news out of jakarta. according to the rueters news agen agency, police say they have shot down four suspected attackers who were involved in a gun and bomb attack in the capital of jakarta earlier today. apparently this all began outside of a police station. what we've been told was three were shot dead. a fourth is on the run. but now it appears that maybe all of the attackers, if we were to believe that there were four involved, there have been other reports that this number may be much higher. >> as high as 14 in some cases. >> but at this point, it appears four suspects involved in this attack, which involved automatic gunfire, as well as grenades have been killed by police.
10:52 pm
>> kathy, as we get this word from rueter, what more can you tell us? >> well, isha, we cannot independently confirm that information as of yet, but we do know that police were in pursuit of an armed suspect earlier after the gun fight. and the grenade explosions. and they were reportedly inside an office building, skyline building. i earlier saw heavily armed policemen, a special forces going into the building. as i left that building, i also thought it seems the operation had winded down. i'm told now that police are still inside the building, although journalists and bystanders are able to go closer. and what we saw there was a starbucks cafe where the gun fight allegedly happened. all the windows are blown out in the aftermath of the gun fight
10:53 pm

11:50 pm
breaking situation. it's still fluid and we're still working to get you more details. >> we just got this detail from cnn indonesia saying the six people killed in this incident, we know four of them were the suspects. one of them was a foreigner, and, of course, the other was a police officer. and we don't know the nationality at this point of that foreigner killed. we also understand that a number of foreigners were injured in this. again, we don't know the nationalities, but we'll stay on top of this. just repeating, six people in all were killed in the six blasts and the gunfire that ensued. six people, including one foreigner. we know a policeman. that was confirmed. a policeman was killed, and we know too, that what they're saying, heavily injured foreigner in this incident.
11:51 pm
we'll continue to try to clarify that. no one has claimed responsibility. the country has been on high alert over threats of a terror group linked to isis. the country's president calls it an act of terror but says people should not be afraid. i want to leave this story for a moment and cover another big story that we brought you 24 hours ago. ten american sailors are released from iranian detention. there are concerns about the circumstances that led to their freedom. >> that's right. you remember the sailors were captured tuesday after their boats entered iranian waters in the persian gulf. well, iranian television aired this. video of a sailor it identified as the commander, apologizing for the incident. the pentagon said the video appeared authentic but noted the crew's circumstances at the time were unknown. >> it was a mistake.
11:52 pm
that was our fault. and we apologize for our mistake. the it was a misunderstanding. we did not mean to go into iranian territorial water. >> the iranian behavior was fantastic. we thank you for your hospitality and your assistance. >> cnn military analyst joining us now to talk more about this. thank you so much for being with us. there are, of course, questions about the circumstances leading to the release of the ten u.s. sailors, and, of course, the humiliating shots of them on their knees at gunpoint. such provocative pictures sent out on iranian media. what did you make of those images? and then that apology that we just aired from the commander? >> well, the images are being broadcast all over iranian tv and social media. they've mounted a huge propaganda campaign. one of them i just saw a few hours ago, quite agreerks.
11:53 pm
it has pictures from the prison, mistreatment of iraqi prisoners, in juxtaposition with the treatment of the american citizens. they're drawing distinction. the it's disturbing and very upsetting to military people to see our brothers in arms and sisters in arms treated that way. there was no reason to humiliate them that way or put them at gunpoint on their knees, hands behind their knees and then to broadcast it. violations of international law, and the normalcy that we generally expect of other military forces. >> absolutely. but thankfully they were released. but there are also questions about how these sailors ended up in iranian the territorial waters. farsi island, mechanical problems were the reasons given. does that make sense to you? >> it could have been mechanical
11:54 pm
problems. my question is why were they out there? these are small patrol boats that are 45 feet long. they're meant to carry 20 people on each boat. they only had ten total for the two. they were transitting from kuwait to bahrain. they should have been along the coast. that was strange, where they were. i have no idea what they were doing out there. somebody in the may navy will h to take responsibility. you showed a clip of a lieutenant apologizing. you know, i'm not going to second guess a navy officer in that circumstance saying what he had to say to guarantee the safety of his crew. i think we need to find out what kind of situation he was in before we second guess him. >> certainly understand. and, of course, it will be interesting to see if we do hear some sort of explanation from the u.s. navy as to why these ten sailors were so close to

welcome our viewers here in the states and those of you watching from all around the world. we continue to follow breaking news this hour out of indonesia. i'm errol barnett. >> i'm rosemary church. we want to thank you for joining us. this is "cnn newsroom." >> we want to begin with new information on the terror attack as the country's president calls it, in jakarta. cnn indonesia reports that six people were killed in thursday's terror attack there. that information coming from the national police. also cnn indonesia says police shot and killed four attackers. separate to the six people we now know who were killed, those four attackers, they believe carried out the series of gun and bomb attacks. >> this is a fluid situation, of course, as we report this, that the number of casualties has changed. and this could very well change
12:01 am
as we continue bringing you this breaking news. police say they are now working to secure the area. these attack happened in the last few hours. this has been no claim of responsibility so far, but indonesia has been on high alert in recent weeks. police and the military have been going to have an east indonesian group that pledged allegiance to isis. it appears one of the targets was a starbucks coffee shop. >> you can see some of the blasts in that footage here. here is a statement starbucks released. one customer sustained injuries and was treated on the scene. our employees are all confirmed to be safe. this store and all other starbucks stores in jakarta will remain closed out of an abundance of caution until further notice.
12:02 am
>> kathy joining us with more on the story. as we've just been reporting, we understand six people, including one foreigner, have been killed, and in addition to the four suspects who were killed. and then there are ten people who have been injured and one of them is a foreigner as well. at this point, we don't know the nationalities. talk to us about what more you're hearing from authorities there in jakarta. >> reporter: well, rosemary, we know that at least six, maybe even seven people killed. one of them has not been identified, and maybe that's why the number six is being reported so far. but we do know that civilians have been killed, and the gun battle and explosions that happened earlier today in jakarta. we assume the victims were near or in the starbucks coffee shop that was first targeted. eyewitnesss say the first explosion did happen in
12:03 am
starbucks, and then the attack on the police outpost happened afterwards, the gunfight, and then one armed suspect fleeing the scene from what police have been saying so far, four suspects were killed. their bodies were brought to the police hospital. for now, the situation here has calmed down a bit, but we know that police forces are still in the area trying to secure it. people are not allowed to go inside the building or near the starbucks cafe. they're able to move around that building. people are milling about, trying to see what's happened here. but rosemary, there is a city on edge now. after this attack, people didn't expect this to happen. >> totally understand that. but police did move very quickly. do clarify for us, as well, you say they're trying to secure the area. does that mean there's still a
12:04 am
threat? >> reporter: for now, there no clear indication that the police have cleared out the area. they are still searching from our colleague who is down there right now, he said that there were some police forces there. at one point, they had to run away thinking they were going to detonate an explosive. perhaps there's a fear that there may be explosives that have been left around after the attacks. but certainly, they're trying to secure the area. we're a few hundred meters away from the starbucks cafe, and we're not allows to go anywhere near that from where we are. >> at what point can we expect to hear more about the victims? >> reporter: well, i think they've identified at least two of the civilians, and one of them is a foreign national. from what we've seen so far, they're still to identify a third civilian as well.
12:05 am
the numbers may rise, as you said, because this information came hours before the attack. we didn't know, for example, that the starbucks was the first target, first explosion happened there. so the numbers may rise. but hopefully not as high as people would think. but this is a -- indonesia is not a stranger to those attacks. we've seen the a tothotel bombe here twice, and the embassy. those attacks are on the top of people's minds here, and the fear and threat of terror is something that people take seriously in indonesia. >> they do. and, of course, you know, i just mentioned how quickly the police moved on this. talk to us about the links to counterterrorism and the work that he's done in jakarta and beyond across indonesia to really move fast when situations like this occur.
12:06 am
>> indonesia has an elite counterterrorism force. they were formed shortly after the first major attacks here in bali. they're highly trained not just in terms of responding to attacks like this but also in trying to prevent any attacks. they've been in pursuit of hundreds of terror suspects in the last decade or so, and they have a high rate of convictions. a lot of these terror suspects were put to jail. a lot of them are still in prison. that's also not the concern here in indonesia. many of these radical terrorists are in the prison system and are able to communicate with other prisoners. even through their supporters outside of the prison system, and that is one of the approaches that the government has taken is to make sure that
12:07 am
radicalization does not spread. it's still a minority of groups who espouse to launch terror attacks in indonesia. >> all right. cnn's kathy joining us there from central jakarta and clarifying, six civilians killed, perhaps seven, and these numbers may rise. at this point, we know one of them is a foreigner. we do not know the nationality of that particular victim. thank you so much, kathy, for joining us. we'll return to you very soon. and at this moment, it's just past 3:00 p.m. there in jakarta. the it's the afternoon. this unfolded in the past three or four hours. this attack taking place in the middle of the day in a busy part of the city. for people there, it was extremely frightening. earlier i spoke with jeremy dougl douglas whose with the u.n. office. he witnessed the attack and earlier told me what he saw.
12:08 am
listen. >> i was actually pulling into the u.n. building. i was behind it, thankfully, coming in from the back, and we got a phone call from our security saying that something had happened in front of the building. they suspected a bomb had gone off. we weren't quite sure what was going on, but we pulled up to the front of the building and got out of the car to go in and suddenly a bomb went off, sizable, close by, just around the corner, i guess. at that point, we realized we're in a bit of a problem here. so we rushed into the building. a couple minutes later, that's where we got in an elevator to go up to our office on the tenth floor. a third bomb went off, and then this is really bad. we got up to the office, and then we heard a fourth, fifth, and sixth bomb, and then we heard exchange the small arms fire in front of the building.
12:09 am
>> we are looking at footage from outside, jeremy of a few of the blasts. you see an explosion. this is in an open area next to the street. you see what appears to be a puff of smoke. after that point after you heard the explosions, how quickly was it until you heard the exchange of gunfire? >> it would have been a few minutes. i'd want to say about five minutes, give or take. so there was initial explosions. i'm guessing a gap of a couple minutes, and then there's one and then another and then another. a couple in rapid succession, and then the exchange of gunfire, and then the police swept in. actually, they were very quick on the scene. good for militants seemed to be holed up in building.
12:10 am
>> we're looking at footage as police rushed out to make sure everyone was safe, make sure they identified all the attackers. we're now told by police that four of the suspects were killed in that exchange of gunfire. our producer outside says the scene is much calmer now. have you received the all clear from police or are you still hunkered down? >> we're still locked down. we're waiting for the clearance to leave the building. we're about to go into a security briefing to find out exactly what happened and the status of the u.n. staff, and then we're going to hopefully get clearance to leave this afternoon. the area is secure at this point. >> jeremy douglas speaking with me earlier. incredibly frightening. when we spoeke with us, they wee still on a lock down. as our producer told us, as far as they know, this is still a dangerous situation. >> they're still trying to secure the area.

meters away from our office. we're on level 20. we can see, really, a lot of the city. and 500 meters away, we just saw, like, a really huge smoke and, like, sounded like an explosion, and we were wondering what it is. at first we thought it's like from the construction side which is next to our building. it turns out it was on the street near a starbucks coffee, or something like that, or police station. and then there was another explosion, another explosion. mostly like, five or six explosions or gunshots, which was really weird, and we realized, okay, there's something going on. and it was really strange. our building is now completely locked down. we can't enter. we can't leave the building, and -- but so far everything is safe here. we just have to -- it probably will take a few hours, i guess. i don't know what happened. nobody knows here what's going on. >> a scary situation there for

12:34 am
he said there was still a man hunt on for other terrorist suspects. he didn't give any details on who these suspects are, where they may be. but we see, though, on this main thoroughfare leading down to the building, they've just opened it to traffic, and we're seeing activities coming back to normal here. soon cars and motor bikes will be allowed down this road. there's some indication that the situation has been secured. and that people are now allowed near the building. but, again, as i said, there is a man hunt on for other suspects. there was no indication or no details about that man hunt. he also did say that there were five explosions during that attack, and there was a gub fight. one of the explosions may have happened in the starbucks cafe. but he wouldn't say what kind of explosives were used.
12:35 am
although, he did say that they were going to wait for laboratory results, that it might have been low explosive devices used in the attacks. >> we know from starbucks who have closed their stores, that one person was injured as a result of that explosion. kathy you're telling us the chief security minister saying five suspects killed. no civilians died throughout all of this. and there is one suspect still at large. did the officials mention who they believe could be behind this or who the prime suspects are? >> reporter: no. he wouldn't say. there were a lot of questions about any groups who might have had links to isis or pledged any support to isis. he couldn't say for sure who was behind the attacks, but, of course, he did say that they

were looking into all these links and possibilities, and that there was a man hunt on. we know that there was an ongoing operation, a joint police and police military operation against a group that pledged support to isis. operations were across chava and other parts. and you're talking about sotuso. he claimed allegiance with isis. the president called this a terror attack before officials have confirmed who they believe to be behind it. with traffic opening up behind you now, does it appear as far as evidence on the streets, you mentioned that the suspect's bodies were removed and taken to hospitals. has everything returned to normal, i guess, where you are, or are they still collecting

evidence? >> reporter: the police forces are still inside the building, for sure. they're securing that area, and they're not allowing anyone in that building so far. although, security minister also said in a 3:00 p.m. local time that the people who have been in their offices would be allowed out. that area will be open again to the public. of course, i'm, you know, i'm sure people will be curious to see what happened here. but this is a city on the edge right now, and i'm sure many would stay put at home if they can. >> that's understanding. kathy, who while this was unfolding rushed out to the scene and was able to get as close as she is now. five suspects killed, two civilians dying and one suspect still on the loose. it's just past 3:37 in the afternoon there. thank you, kathy.

let's go to a former australian national security operative and counterterrorism expert. thank you for talking with us. as we just learned from our cnn producer there, we understand that police have killed five suspects now, and this man hunt continues. what is extraordinary here in the aftermath of these six blasts and the gunfire is how quickly the security forces, the police, moved on this. talk to us about the counterterrorism expertise there in indonesia, particularly in jakarta. >> well, i think you've got to look at the previous attacks in indonesia, and of course, the famous bali bombings where 202 people were killed. there's been a range of attacks in indonesia, and international
12:39 am
assistance to upscale the indonesian national police as well as the well-known counterterrorism force. not only have police been trained by the australians and americans and the uk, but also there's been advancements in intelligence cooperation and intention sharing between countries. there's been a lot of effort to work with indonesians. i was involved with a lot of the counterterrorism training, and so i have full confidence that the indonesian authorities will apprehend those that may still be at large. what does surprise me is they were caught my surprise. when you have more than one attacker and there's a level of organization, obviously information becomes available to the police and the authorities that helps prevent such attacks. so what we are seeing around the world, we're being caught off
12:40 am
guard and surprised by low level small scale attacks, and this may appear more significant, but still, it's a fairly a type of attack with firearms and hand grenades. >> but it was well coordinated, though, wasn't it? >> absolutely. >> when you're talking about the shop and the police station and the shopping mall, and as you said, there was an element of surprise. but the security services had been on high alert because of their fears, this link with someone that has links with isis. you're saying that they would have moved faster than what they did, then? >> i don't want to be critical. it's always easier in hindsight. it does surprise me when there's a level organization that things are not detected. as you said, there was warning, some weeks ago, and i even say months ago, that they were
12:41 am
likely to experience an attack. why i'm surprised is that some of the perpetrators weren't detected. the it's a difficult situation when -- i saw the numbers around 150 to 200 that have crossed to syria and iraq. because the borders in indonesia and throughout parts of southeast asia are pore us, unlike the united states or australia, it's easy for people to slip out and slip back in. i'll be interested to see where these perpetrators have come from. if it's locally developed or from somewhere else, or whether it's people that returned back from fighting overseas. >> and at this point, there has been no claim of responsibility. we don't know who is involved, exactly. but this seems to be the new norm, doesn't it, across the globe, and perhaps things can be learned from this. many thanks to clark jones

the united states. the winning numbers match at least three tickets sold in florida, tennessee, and california. >> in california you're seeing people celebrating at the convenience store that sold a winning ticket. in addition to the big jackpot, at least 12 other the tickets in california matched five numbers making them $1 million winners. here is the announcement being made. those numbers, by the way, for those of you wondering, 8, 27, 34, 4, 19, and the power ball, 10. >> just check your tickets again, and our sara sidner joins us from california. i'm guessing you've checked your tickets and you didn't win. but you do get to talk with us which is fabulous. it looks really quiet behind you. there was great celebration when they discovered that one of the winning tickets came from there.

>> reporter: you know, we were wondering what was going on. we've never seen anything like this. all of a sudden this store, this 7/11 which did sell the winning ticket in california for that $1.5 billion winning jackpot, all of a sudden people started showing up from all over the place here, and they were cheering and going into the store. there were tons of people just coming in and out of the store. they were cheering for the store owner who was here. he will get $1 million just for selling the winning ticket. he said he hasn't checked his own tickets yet. we had a little bit of a conversation with him, because he's a winner too. what do you think about the crowd that just showed up here? >> well, i just love them, and they love me. >> reporter: what does selling the winning ticket mean for you and your store? >> it's feeling really, really
12:54 am
good. and whoever the lucky person come here, thanks for that person. >> reporter: he moves to america more than two decades ago to have a better life. he now owns several of these 7/11s. it's charming and happy. they were cheering together. we're still not sure, rosemary and errol, who is winner is. do you know they have six months before they have to come forward to claim the ticket? we might be waiting a while. >> it could be. and the store owner, he has a lot of new friends now. but that will be interesting to see. of course, then they have to make the choice if they're going to take the whole amount or are they going to get paid over the rest of their life, really. that's a big decision. and a lot of it goes to the tax man, doesn't it? >> that's right. it depends on what state you're
12:55 am
in. california does have a state tax as well. florida doesn't, though. they'll be paying a little bit less in taxes. but it is interesting. if you look at whether to take the lump sum or whether you should take it over the next 20 to 30 years, i don't think it's really going to matter, though, when you're talking about 1 -- $1.5 billion. i think you'll be happy. >> it was shared around a little bit. i was worried that one person was going to win it all, and that just isn't fair at all, is it? sara sidner joining us from a happy store owner's facilities. we will wait and see when the winners come forward. thank you, sara. we appreciate it. you can go to bed now. >> before we go this hour, we want to update you on the explosions in indonesia cease capital. indonesia's president said it was an act of terror, but he

urged the country not to surrender to fear. listen. >> translator: we condemn these attacks that have disturbed the peace of society, and we want to spread this message to the notion and society. i ordered authorities to catch those involved in this. we should not be frightened by what's happened with this attack. we should say calm. everything will be under control. >> that is important to stay calm. as far as you know, the latest information, though, five suspects were killed. there may be another suspect on the loose. so still a very fluid situation, and we'll have more on all of that at the top of the hour. >> that man hunt does continue. we'll keep following that. thank you for watching us. >> remember to connect with us on twitter any time. it's great to hear from you. early start is next for those of you in the states. >> for others, stay tuned for "cnn newsroom." have a great day.
