campaign. four days from tonight at this hour we'll be counting votes. amen. >> and we have really no idea what's going to happen. quite a night already. it's far from over. cnn is covering all of it nonstop. we'll be back with another edition of "360" at 11:00. cnn with don lemon starts right now. 3. here we go. breaking news. it's a big night. no debate. iowa is the place to be. and we're taking you live to all of these events. look at all of these events happening. all the politicos are out. all the people running for esident. this is "cnn tonight." i'm don lemon. four days until the iowa caucuses where the first votes of the campaign will be cast. republicans and democrats making their last-minute pitches tonight. there you see them out in force from donald trump's event about three miles away from the gop debate to bill and hillary clinton's rallies to bernie sanders. there's a lot going on. let's get right to it, shall we?
6:01 pm
cnn's brianna keilar talked with donald trump moments ago and joins me from iowa. great interview. you talked to donald trump on his plane. what did he say to you? >> we did the interview here at the des moines interview with his family looking on. he said he got a call from fox news. he also says throughout the day he was fielding phone calls including from roger ailes. he got an apology. he wouldn't say from whom at fox news. listen. >> you have an issue with one of the moderators. how is it any different? >> i don't respect megyn kelly. i think he's overrated. fox news called me just before you walked on to the plane. they called me in all fairness,
6:02 pm
very nicely, but they want me there very badly. i never once asked she be removed. by the time they apologized, i said the problem is -- >> they on the phone apologized? is that what the phone call was about? >> fox could not have been nicer. >> you got an apology? >> yes. they could not have been nicer. >> who apologized? >> i don't want to say. i said would youave gone if you didn't have this event? he seemed open to it. he does have this event across town. he said it was too late to cancel it or go to the debate because he was doing this event that is at the moment oversold. >> we're looking live at that event where people are getting ready. playing to the cameras there at drake university. brianna keilar just finished up her big interview with donald trump on the plane. as we look at these pictures, we
6:03 pm
had a representative on. couldn't really tell us about which veterans groups this money is going to. what did he say about the money he's raising for wounded vets. >> he said he was planning on raising $5 million. he'dome c under fire certainly because it appeared the money was goin to his personal foundation, and then it was unclear which veterans groups, and it still is, which one he's going to be donating the nomone to. his son tweeted out that would be revealed. there were some veterans groups, including the iraq and afghanistan veterans assoction that have said we're not going to take this money. we feel like he's playing politics. also vets groups who say we'll happily take this money. we need this. i guess we'll find out at this event exactly where that money is going to be headed. >> brianna, stand by. we'll get more of brianna keilar's interview with donald trump throughout this broadcast. again, his event getting ready
6:04 pm
to start just moments from now in des moines, iowa. i want to take you to hillary clinton on the left-hand side of the screen and donald trump on the right. let's listen in to hillary clinton. >> -- most people think that's where our next problem could come from. i want to be ahead of the curve. go after the guys before they hurt us. don't close the barn dorn after the horses run away. keep the horse in the barn. and the best evidence, the best evidence that my plan is the toughest plan is the republicans are advertising against me trying to convince democrats not to support me. you got to give them credit for cleverness. a little obvious. when karl rove is running an ad advertising against me, you have to think, hmm, what's going on here. i'll tell you what's going on. he and the hedge fund guys and

billionaires have run $6 million in negative ads against me. why? because they know that i mean what i say. i will do what i say, and i will come right after them. and they are doing everything they can to make sure i can't. i tell people, i find this perversely flattering. they've been trying to kill me for years. oh, my gosh, when i was going after universal health care. it was called hillary care before obamacare. >> hillary clinton speaking in iowa. you see the donald trump event, hillary clinton speak, also her husband stumping in iowa as well, and bernie sanders out tonight stumping. let's go to bernie sanders now and listen in. >> today in iowa, today in

vermont, women are having babies. and for those of you who are parents, you know what an extraordinary day it is. you never forget it. and it's a pretty big day for the baby as well. but here is the rub. and that is, if that mom and dad are working class people or low-income people, mom will have to separate herself from that beautiful newborn baby and go back to work in a week or two weeks in order to earn enough money to take care of her family. that should not be happening in america. and that is why i support legislation in the house and the senate to provide three months
6:07 pm
of paid family and medical leave. and when real unemployment is close to 10% and youth unemployment is off the charts, i think it's a no-brainer to understand that the federal government needs to develop a massive federal jobs program to put our people back to work. >> there you have it. bernie sanders speaking tonight in iowa. there's so much going on, if you are an establishment republican, on the frichbnges, a centrist democrat, if you are a socialist. whatever kind of political junkie you are, we have it for you. feels almost like election night. i want to bring in my panel.
6:08 pm
trump supporter andy dean and bob beckel, the author of "i should be dead," my life surviving politics, tv and addiction. andy, the trump event is under way. donald trump says he's going to raise millions tonight. where will this money go? >> so when donald is speaking tonight, he's going to reveal a list of the wonderful charities that will get this great money. the american people are deciding, as we speak, whether or not to watch a debate which we've seen six times prior or donald trump celebrate our veterans which is just about to happen as you're about to see it on our cam perhaps trump will reveal that list. donald trump doesn't need any more money. he's got $10 billion. he's not doing this for personal gain. this is going to the veterans. it's an exciting night and big night for the veterans. >> he doesn't need the money but needs the people to go out and caucus for him in iowa. not a mistake for him not to be on the stage at an event that's
6:09 pm
for republicans, for candidates? >> right, well, we're going to learn that after the vote coming up in a couple of days. if he ends up winning, this is a genius move. if he doesn't win, i'll be on next week and talking about how we're going to win new hampshire. depends on what happens when the people vote. i will say one thing real quick. if you are in iowa right now, the odd are the local news networks, a lot of people forget this because we're on a national cable channel. if you are in iowa, the local news networks in all these different cities, the nbc, abc and cbs affiliates, probably not the fox affiliates but the other affiliates are going to break in for local coverage of the trump event which they have the ability to do. they do not have the legal right to air the debate which can only exclusively air on fox news. so your average citizen in iowa, when they turn on their television, there will be three networks potentially carrying the trump event, cnn carrying it
6:10 pm
and fox news is the only one covering the boring debate. >> bob beckel, what's do you make of this? i've never seen anything like it. >> haven't spent the last four days in iowa many, many times. it's about -- it picks up like this and it will get more intense as the next days go by. now is the time to get your voters. get them on the phone. get a commitment to show up. here's the problem. you look at bernie sanders and donald trump. both of them are facing audiences very young. they are the base of their support in many ways. and yet they haven't been out to caucus before. it is from trump's standpoint, i have to think whether he can get his vote out or not is the ultimate question, and turnout. >> we've seen sanders and the two clintons there. we've seen that play out before. when you look at the top left, that's never really happened before. >> no, it hasn't. it is a big roll of the dice. i can't begin to tell you, and
6:11 pm
i've been around a long time. i don't know if it's going to help or hurt. my own gut tells me it's going to hurt. to not show up, something the iowans take seriously. to not show up, i think that's going to be a little bit of -- although he's increased in the polls. >> this is just in to cnn. a statement from fox news from our fox news spokesperson. i'm going to read this. from a fox news spokesperson. roger ailes had three brief conversations with donald trump today about possibly appearing at the debate. there were not multiple calls placed by ailes to trump because trump in the interview with brianna keilar said multiple. we said there were not multiple calls. in the course of those conversations we acknowledged his concerns about a satirical observation we made in order to quail the attack on megyn kelly and prevent her from being
6:12 pm
smeared any further. furthermore trump offered to appear at the debate upon the condition that fox news contribute $5 million to his charities. we explained that was not possible and we could not engage in a quid pro quo, nor could any money change hands for any reason. in the last 48 hours, we've kept two issues at the forefront. we would never compromise our journalistic standards and we always stand by our journalists. we would always stand by our journalist megyn kelly. we have accomplished those two goals, and we are pleased with the outcome. we're proud to have her on stage as a debate moderator alongside bret baier and chris wallace. bob, react to that. >> i think they are exactly right. i think that -- one of the apologies, who said what? i don't think that's the big issue. fox had every right to try to get him to come on the stage. trump had every right not to go on. the question is, who is it going to hurt more? certainly not going to hurt fox.
6:13 pm
fox is not up for election. but it can hurt trump. >> i have to ask you this, andy, since you are a trump supporter. what do you make of this statement saying we didn't make multiple calls. no real apology. >> i'll be honest. a lot of this is like inside baseball. the american people just don't care about roger ailes and how many times he called. most don't -- >> donald trump certainly thinks so because he's making it an issue and bringing up roger ail ailes. >> making an issue with fox news. this is the biggest piece of the news tonight and will reveal itself. showing up at this event tonight is the winner of the 2008 iowa caucus, mike huckabee and the winner of the 2012 iowa caucus, rick santorum. they represent about 5% to 7% support in iowa. by them showing up to this event they realize that they'll not be the republican nominee.
6:14 pm
they'll not win this. but by coming here, it's showing they support trump. that's a big deal. >> we'll talk about all of that and much more as we await donald trump and others. they are all speaking tonight and stumping in iowa. we'll get to it. you won't miss any of it. we'll take a quick break and be right back. want to get their hands on. if they could ever catch you.

6:17 pm
thank you, everybody. sit down, please. we had about 24 hours to put this together. it was very, very quick. and we're here for some very special people and we're going to hear from some of them, but this san honor. this is real honor. i wanted to be about five minutes away, and i've enjoyed that. i've enjoyed that. all the online polls said i've done very well with that, with the debates, and i've had a kick with it. but you have to stick up for your rights. when you're treated badly, you have to stick up for your rights. you have to do it. and whether we like it or not, whether it's something we want to do or not, and that's what our country has to do. as an example, iran. the way they've been treating us with all of -- the deal is one of the worst deals i've ever seen negotiated under any circumstances. and we just take it. why have to stick up for ourselves as people. and we have to stick up for our

6:19 pm
could not have been -- but once this started, it's for our vets, there was nothing i could do. i don't know. for me personally is it a good thing? a bad thing? will i get more votes or bad? nobody knows. you're going to like it because we raised over $5 million in one day. over $5 million! o that's not so bad. you know, my whole theme is make america great again. and that's what we're going to do. we wouldn't have even been here if it weren't for our vets. and our vets are being mistreated. illegal aliens are treated better in plamany cases than ou vets. and it's not going to happen anymore. so once this ball started rolling, we couldn't stop it. you see the house is packed. this took place less than 24 hours -- we had less than 24 hours to do this.
6:20 pm
i said i'm not going to do the debate out of respect for myself. i won't do it because it would just be wrong. but i love iowa. i'm here. we've got to do something. i didn't know we were going to we actually raised close to 6 million. and a lot more to come. we set up a site. wwwdonaldtrumpforvets.com. they've raised almost $500,000 just today. this money is going to continue to pour in. we have some incredible, incredible people. i want to call out some of the folks that gave a lot of the money and then we'll have someone come up to speak. an incredible speaker and someone who really understands what's the vets are going through. first we have to talk about people that made a lot of money, and they wouldn't have made a lot of money and wouldn't be here if it weren't for the vets and our great military. the military has a lot more guts

he has his rivals standing on stage with him in front of a big donald trump for president sign. >> well, they weren't just his rivals. these were the last two winners of the iowa caucus. this gave his ploy tonight some validation. not only did donald trump put his money where his mouth is, but he had rick santorum and mike huckabee get up there and erode all their valuables and principles so they'd have a camera following them. tonight is something we haven't seen before. those two weren't just some average joes. they have won here in iowa. and t is just amazing tv to sit back and watch. >> bob, erosion of character and values? >> well, look. they'll get more television coverage tonight than they've had in the entire iowa campaign. >> exactly. >> how are you going to be criticized for going to a

veterans event. >> andy dean, there is that photograph of, you know, rick santorum and mike huckabee standing in front of that trump sign in a campaign ad. >> it's a big deal. if we look at the two winners of the past two iowa caucuses, mike huckabee and rick santorum. these are big names of evangelicals, as is jerry falwell jr. who also endorsed trump. we're seeing a tidal wave. if anything, as bakari sellers said. even though he's a liberal, once in a while, he's correct. after iowa, if mike huckabee and rick santorum decide, hey, they collectively are only going to get about 5% to 7% in the polls after iowa if they drop out, who are they going to endorse? we've seen it tonight on the same stage at donald trump. this is a big deal. this is a big moment that we

just saw those two candidates with donald trump. that will help him not only in iowa but as we move on to new hampshire, south carolina and nevada. >> that's my question. >> don, if i -- >> let me get to bob real quick. do you think this will help him among evangelicals in iowa and beyond? >> i think it does. when you look at rick santorum and huckabee, a big part of the reason they won iowa in 2008 and 2012 is because they spoke that language to the evangelicals. they're showing up. they get good press because it's a veterans event. they decide to stand right beside donald trump, the front-runner, and talk with him and shake his hands. that does help him. you'd have to think that he's going to get some points from that. also, remember, donald trump supporters, they love him. they've seen him debate. he's a good debater. it's just those undecided. if you are trying to decide between cruz and trump, does this hurt him? we'll see. >> bakari, i have to get to a

break. go ahead. >> i was just going to say, even more importantly than them standing with trump tonight, it's a rebuke of ted cruz. huckabee and santorum went out of their way to say we really don't like ted cruz and we'll literally take donald trump over ted cruz in any race. >> that's a huge deal. >> we'll be right back. we're going to have lots of conversation. we've got an hour and ten minutes to go and longer here because my colleague anderson cooper will be at 11:00 p.m. and continue our live coverage. live from iowa, the center of the universe when it comes to politics. feels like election night almost. donald trump speaking at a veterans event. hillary clinton, the former president out speaking as well. and bernie sanders. after this break.all of it right don't go anywhere. what makes this simple salad the best simple salad ever?

beckel. fox news had two sets of questions just in case. do you buy into that, they had two sets? >> i don't know. people are giving fox a hard time about this but the fact is that trump gets up on that stage debate after debate after debate and insults people and then he gets insulted by such a statement. >> you were surprised by the statement? >> yes. i'm surprised trump took it the way he did and that questions whether he used it as an excuse or not. >> many people were surprised. they thought he was tone deaf. >> it's highly unusual to put out a satirical question, you have to ask how can they be fair. that was a good point point that
