10:00 pm
a cable gig. some people are running to be speakers to sell books to be on dancing with stars. >> they did have thoughts. >> you perkd up with that. thank you to everybody in our panel. our debate coverage continues now in los angeles. p . hello and welcome to our viewers in the united states and around the world. coming up at 10:00 here on the west coast, but donald trump he was not there but it didn't take long for his name to come up in iowa. trump was holding his own events trying to compete with the fox news debate. >> he says the network apologized to him late thursday and asked him to take part in the debate, but trump says he had to stand up for himself. >> i didn't want to be here. i have to be honest.
10:01 pm
i wanted to be about five minutes away and i've enjoyed that. i've enjoyed that. all the online polls have done well with the debates and i've had a kick with it, but you have to stick up for your rights. when you're treated badly, you have to stick up for your rights. you have to do it. >> the other leading republican candidates had a little fun at trump's expense for not turning up before the iowa caucuses. >> his closest rival said trump's absence was an insult to voters who deserved to hear about the issues and solutions solutions. >> i'm a maniac and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat and ugly and ben you're a terrible surgeon. now that we've gotten the donald trump portion out of the way. >> i kind of miss donald trump. he was a teddy bear to me. we've had a loving relationship.
10:02 pm
i miss him. >> let's begin by being clear what this campaign is about. it's not about donald trump. this campaign is about the greatest country in the world and a president who has destroyed many of the things that made america special. >> jeb bush so did not want donald trump to be there. for a closer look for the not the donald trump debate, we have cnn's political reporter at the debate site there. >> we also have with us here in l.a. republican consultant and joining us to be part of the conversation trump supporter who is in washington. >> so we'll go to david. what a difference a donald makes. boy, to quote a donald trump term, that was a low energy debate, very different from what we've seen before.
10:03 pm
>> that is true and it's not necessarily because of donald trump's performance in the past debates. sometimes he is really hung back in the previous debates, but he sparks enough controversy on the stage that he gives it a different sense of life that it was missing today which is why i think that even though he wasn't on the stage, i do think he was the clear winner tonight. we are a few days out from the voting beginning in iowa and he as the front-runner both here in iowa and nationally avoided all the arrows that a front-runner would normally face in a debate. he was able to avoid that by not showing up. you played a little bit of sound, but he really was ab cents from the stage and that is a good thing for donald trump because that means that there's -- he didn't take on any extra baggage before the voting begins. >> indeed. david, good point. you were at the trump rally,
10:04 pm
which was just five minutes down the road. what was the atmosphere like? >> i have to tell you that people started lining up hours before he got there and we spent a lot of time outside trying to figure out who was in the line. there were people who had driven in six hours to see him from kansas city, from pennsylvania, other surrounding states. really energized by his candidatesy. everyone said they weren't even taping it. they had no interest in watching it. this is their guy. it was a much more restrained performance than we usually see from donald trump once he got up there on that stage. he had a series of veterans in the front row, many of them wounded war yoeriors p he broug mike huckabee up on stage to talk about veterans issues.
10:05 pm
so he really tried to focus on the veterans issues, not so much his poll numbers. there was one low energy jab at jeb bush, but other than that he restrained himself tonight. >> he can't help it. he cannot help himself. >> it is indeed quite a spec tabl. do stand by for us. we want to bring our viewers some of the highlights from this evening. >> absolutely. first to marco rubio, rand paul and ted cruz went after each other over immigration reform. >> we have the tools in federal law to do this now. we can build a fence. we can triple the boarder patrol. we can cut off funding to them. we can end welfare for those here illegally and what is missing is the political will because too many democrats and republicans want to solve this problem. >> he can't have it both ways, but what is insulting is that he
10:06 pm
is the king of saying oh you're for am nesty. it's a falseness. >> this is the lie that ted's campaign is built on and rand touched on it. he is a conservative guy. ted, throughout this campaign you've been willing to say or do anything in order to get votes. >> ted cruz seemed to have a big target on his back without donald trump there on the debate stage. he came under fire from several opponents and there was a moment cruz going after the fox moderat moderators. >> i would note that the last four questions rand please attack ted, jeb please attack ted. let me say this -- >> it is a debate, sir. >> the boos had worked in previous debates didn't seem twork tonight. something else different about this debate marco rubio talked
10:07 pm
up religion and faith a lot more than he's done in previous debates. >> i think if you do not understand that our christian values are one of the reasons that america is such a special country. why are we one of the most generous people in the world? why do americans contribute millions of dollars to charity? it is not because of the tax write off. in this nation we are influenced by values that teach us to care for the less fortunate, to reach out to the noody, to love our neighbor. this is what's made our nation so special. >> jeffry, you did a bit of running to make the show so thank you for being with us. let's start with you since you made it. it's always a pleasure. there seemed to be a conspiracy when it came to these candidates. there was little mention of the donald trump name and it almost seemed like fox was conducting
10:08 pm
this like donald trump didn't exist. >> i checked the washington post before i came in here and they have a front page story that social media was being dominated by trump supporters. i think that says something here that donald trump loomed over this debate and he wasn't in it. i think he's gotten into jeb bush's head. it's sort of amazing so i think donald trump had a good night and there are plenty of assessments out there that he won the debate by not showing up and ted cruz was the target. >> and to that point, i want to bring in john thomas who is here with us. john, that was the point, the expectation going into this is that ted cruz would have that bull's-eye on his back. he moved from predator to prey. he seemed to be whiney
10:09 pm
complaining about the questioning. we just played some sound. >> he got the front-runner treatment tonight and he didn't weather the storm well. it was a great night for marco rubio. it was not a good night for ted cruz. it may keep him from getting mum momentum. he was starting to lose momentum in iowa in the last couple of weeks. he didn't deliver tonight. >> this is a man known for being a great debater but he blew it. >> when the target is on his back -- his victim card didn't work for him tonight. >> let's go back to jeffry, without donald trump there it seemed kind of relaxed a little bit, they went back to their talking points. in the past when donald trump was in these debates it seemed like almost anything could happen. >> what you're describing and we've had some conversations
10:10 pm
here about it with some of my colleagues, another word for that is boring. these were a bunch of politicians in suites and they need to get the band back together with donald trump so they can have a little electricity in the air and have some excitement. it was a good debate, there's no question. if you're a policy and everything and i like policy it was terrific, but in terms of excitement and drama and all that kind of thing, i think it was flat. >> i want to bring in david, our political director. i know you're listening to this conversation. as we talk about the lack of drama in this evening's proceedin proceedings, one moment that did stand out was the fact that we saw rick santorum and mike huckabee on stage with trump. many say those individuals would
10:11 pm
rather do a deal with trump than let ted cruz gain any kind of momentum. what did you make of that moment? >> i think it was more about rick santorum and mike huckabee being is a starved for attention and one way to get attention is to stand next to donald trump. these guys have been rel gated to the undercard debate so they haven't been on stage with donald trump and basking in the attention for quite some time. to have the opportunity to do that, it was an important thing for them to do. they probably got more attention here in iowa than they've gotten in some time. they are the two most recent winners of the iowa caucuses here, so it also benefited donald trump to stand on stage with them and sort of get the validation that these two guys who were the most recent winners of this caucus are standing on stage with donald trump, sort of a stamp of approval. >> that really will take some of
10:12 pm
the fiz out of the ted cruz's attacks over the last couple of days, the idea that donald trump took his ball and went home, the fact that he could bring these two previous caucus winners up on stage, keep the event fairly focussed on veterans issues, i think it will end up being a gamble that will work fork him. i don't think it's going to hurt too much in terms of people showing up for him on monday. >> very quickly, trump tweeted unbelievable night in iowa. we've raised $6 million. did you get the feeling from the people you spoke to there they got what they were expecting to get? trump said it was like the academy awards. was it? >> it wasn't like the academy awards, but i will say there were a ton of cameras there, so much media from all over the world for an event where donald trump was mostly talking about veterans issues, so was
10:13 pm
remarkable, but the mood was good. they drove in from hundreds of miles to see him, many of them said they would ultimately volunteer for him in new hampshire and other places. so it was a good moment for his campaign. >> okay. a couple of take aways, rubio and cruz, marco rubio talking a lots more about faith and religion. you're thoughts on that? this was a debate heavy on policy, but we didn't learn a lot. >> there wasn't a lot of policy discussion here. marco rubio, he always hits his marks. he's a seasoned debater. marco rubio ramped up his rhetoric and that's by design because he knows that ted cruz's supporters start to leave him tonight they're angry and they're looking for somebody they can share their anger with.
10:14 pm
>> did it seem authentic to you? >> i don't think it was too over the top and on the evangelical marks, the fact is that ted cruz supporters leave they not only want someone who shares their anger, but somebody who shares their faith. marco rubio had a great night tonight. the big story is donald trump solid fieed his status. >> we have jeffry lord in washington who is a cnn commenter and trump supporter. at the debate site in des moines iowa. thank you for being with us. >> thank you. we'll take a short break. when we come whack the democrats are having their own behind the scenes debate. plus, police arrest ten people in connection with the escape of several violent prisoners here in california. does the smell of a freshly bound presentation

candidate hillary clinton took to twitter to weigh in on thursday night's debate. she said donald trump isn't on stage, but you can bet the same backwards ideas and out of touch rhetoric will be out in force. fellow democratic candidate bernie sanders did not address the debate and spent his evening campaigning in iowa. >> the democratic presidential candida candidates. >> they're debating over the debates. >> they're debating if they should have another one. >> it's not just republicans, democrats are locked in their own debate over debates. >> she can't dictate the rules of the game. >> she would be hillary clinton who wants to add a new debate in new hampshire where she is running behind bernie sanders. >> now she's falling behind in new hampshire and wants to change the rules, but if she's willing do a number of debates later on, all right. >> if she's not, you will not be
10:20 pm
there in new hampshire next week. >> clinton asked sanders to sign on in march april and may. >> first things first. we have to agree to debate in new hampshire. the both the governor and i have to agreed and we're waiting for the senator to decide to join us. >> still unclear if that breaks the impass. >> i am urging that we do this debate next week in new hampshire and then i've said i'm more than happy for us to start scheduling additional debates. >> the bottom line this democratic race has no quick end in sight. four days until the iowa caucuses open for the white house. >> i'm not just engaining in rhetoric. >> but clinton says her rivals plans are not realistic. >> i fear it would lead to grid lock, not action. >> she says that she wants real
10:21 pm
action, not grid lock. she says that you'll bring more grid lock to washington. >> not at all. quite the contrary. have too much grad lock right now. >> in iowa today former president clinton stayed out of the democratic fight and focus in had on the other side. >> you can't be lured by distransaction. >> but democrats have their own fight to contend. sanders exploded in furry. >> i don't want my integrity and honesty to be impugned. i have no idea who says this. this is an absolute lie. we will win or lose, but we'll do it honestly. >> sanders did put one issue to rest, releasing a medical report from his doctor saying the 74-year-old senator was in good
10:22 pm
health. >> how do you feel? >> i feel good. >> senator sanders may need some of that good health. this race is likely to continue for a good long while. he says he will do a debate next week only if secretary clinton agrees to more debates later. it looks like this will continue into the spring. for more on this let's bring in our democratic strategist. he also previously worked for hillary clinton's 2008 presidential campaign. dave, always good to have you with us. the debate about more debates. they're going to meet in new hampshire. it seems that there will be more added to the calendar. what does that say about the changing dynamics of this race. >> typically you see like a debate challenge from an
10:23 pm
underdog candidate. hillary clinton is leading but in new hampshire she's down. so she's the candidate driving the conversation for debates. it makes sense for bernie sanders to say if we're going to do debates i want them to go on for months particularly because he's the underdog nationally. >> let's talk about -- just kidding. explain to me what was the logic behind hiding hillary clinton in the first place with regards to these debates. they had on long weekends, there was only a couple of them scheduled compared to the republicans. hillary clinton is a very good debater. she is not so go had at campaigning. this is her strength. >> i think initially she was the front-runner. she didn't want to open her up to attacks. >> that worked well. >> bernie sanders initially he wasn't a real candidate. he was a fringe candidate, but he's tapped a nerve in this
10:24 pm
country on people's frustration and acre and anxiety over what's going on. so he's turned this into a race and now she's in a position to ask for debates. >> so now it's a real race and bernie is in it to win it. he's turned it up. so the question becomes are we watching this race go negative? we saw the bernie sanders ad released today. it doesn't say her name. are we watching things go down a different path? >> i think we're seeing the race and both candidates sharpen their attacks. for iowa and bernie sanders has to win both of those states, iowa and new hampshire, if he's going to propel his campaign forward. at the end of the day hillary doesn't have to win iowa. he's done, dead in the water.
10:25 pm
>> vice president joe biden had a bit of fun at a lunch today. he delivered a couple of good zingers. this was one of them. >> by the way, we may be given a gift from the lord in the presidential race here. i don't know who to root for more, cruz or -- what's that guy's name? he's having a fundraiser for veterans tonight i'm told. >> what's that guy's name. yeah. okay. a good couple of laughs here. but in a hypothetical match up trump against sanders or clinton, it's pretty close. is there a danger here from the democrat side they're looking at trump and maybe there's an over confidence here. >> i think that's part of the issue with hillary is she's running a general election cain
10:26 pm
right now. she's saying i'm the experienced leader. i can bring people together to solve problems. she's trying to appeal to the independent voters in ohio, florida, who are ultimately going to determine who is going to win the general election. bernie sanders is putting himself in a position where he's going for the 50 state strategy. he believes he can create a political revolution. i don't know that's realistic at the end of the day. >> you think? good to speak to you. ahead on cnn, a small band of armed protesters remained holed up at a wild life refuge in oregon. will also a concern over north korea nuclear test.

welcome back everybody. you're watching cnn newsroom live. >> there was no donald trump, but there was still fireworks. the republican presidential candidates met just a few days before monday's caucuses. ted cruz seemed to draw a lotd of fire from his rivals. >> donald trump was holding a fundraiser for the u.s. veterans. he decided to skip the debate because of a feud with fox news. he released a list of 22
10:31 pm
organizations which will share the money raised by events. >> presidential candidate bernie sanders is in overall good health. that's according to his doctor. his physician released a letter saying the u.s. senator has no need to limit his work. candidates usually release medical reports to show they're fit for the role. at least ten people have been arrested after a jail break here in southern california last friday, but there is still no sign of the inmates who escaped. >> the most significant arrest is that of a teacher believed to have orchestrated the escape. >> the instructor arrested began teaching english as a second language here at the jail last july. in a group session she developed a relationship with the suspected kid nader. they say that the suspect
10:32 pm
provided him with mapping capabilities. investigators have made a significant arrest connected to the escape investigation. a 44-year-old resident of lake forest has been arrested. it is believed that he directly contributed to the escape of the three inmates and provided critical planning tools that aided in their preparation for the escape. he is currently employed by the community college district and is a contracted as an esl or english as a second language teacher. she has worked at the men's jail since approximately july of 2015. we have confirmed that he did in fact several of her classes, however we're continuing to investigate the extent of their relationship. >> the sheriff also says that the murder suspect stole a van in los angeles on sunday.
10:33 pm
he took this van on a test drive from a single owner. that owner did not accompany him amend he never returned the van. officials believe that all three of the fugitives may somehow be living in that van right now. back to you now. thanks for that report. authorities say they're doing everything they can to bring a swift and safe resolution to a standoff with armed protesters at an oregon wild life refuge. four protesters are still at the reserve. they say they want to leave peacefully. >> the fbi warned this standoff is far from over. >> there's been a lot of media reporting that the situation at the refuge is over. this is not true. there are four people believed to still be occupying the refuge. the negotiationers try to work
10:34 pm
around the clock with these individuals to try to help them leave that area peacefully. >> the fbi released this video of tuesday's violent confrontation with those protesters. some of them insist their spokesperson had his hands in the air when he was shot and killed. they say the video show him reaching toward his pocket which had a loaded hand gun before he was shot. >> the group's leader was arrested during that same incident. he's now urging the remaining people to go home. we're learning more about north korea's claim it successfully tested an h-bomb. they say they may have tried to test come poepts of a hydrogen bomb. >> this assessment comes after careful analysis of the test data. this is a shift from when the white house said the test watt not consistent with a successful hydrogen bomb test.
10:35 pm
>> so paula, what's the evidence that is behind the u.s. and taking a second look at the north nuclear test because this isn't confirmed yet, right? >> reporter: exactly. they've said it's not definitive, it's not a final cloogs that the u.s. official who has knowledge of the intelligence data that this decision is based on says that the air sampling was incon exclusive. this is what we've heard that they couldn't get enough elements to be able to tell exactly what was in that test. so what they believe is that there may have been components linked to a hydrogen bomb. the reason for that because they wasn't back to the seismic data and they found out that this test took place more than two times deeper than initially thought so that would be consistent with a hydrogen bomb test, but they say they don't believe it was a full hydrogen
10:36 pm
bomb. potentially north korea believes it has tested a hydrogen bomb because the seismic activity was not large enough tore it to be a full h-bomb. >> so if it turns out it's a component of a hydrogen bomb, does that change the equation when it comes to dealing with the north koreans. ? >> well, potentially it cake make a difference when this comes to the sanctions. remember, that washington and seoul want very strong sanctions against north korea following that fourth nuclear test, no matter what kind of test it was. john kerry the u.s. secretary of state came up against some resistance from china this week. there is a distance between washington and beijing. beijing doesn't want such strong sanctions. it doesn't harm that the u.s. now believes there may be some evidence of a hydrogen bomb.
