jersey governor chris christie. >> the fact is marco you shouldn't compare yourself to joe biden and you shouldn't say that's what we're doing. you have not been involved in a consequenceal decision wruf had to be held accountable. you simply haven't. difference between a governor who has to be responsible for problems and not answering a question. the question was did he fight for his legislation it's abundantly clear he did. i like marco rubio. but he simply doesn't have the experience -- >> let's dispel with the fiction that barack obama doesn't know what he's doing. he knows exactly what he's doing. >> the incorrect and incomplete information and then the memorized 25 second speech that is exactly what his advisors game. >> your state got hit by a massive snow storm weeks ago. you can't even want to go. >> -- my entire life.

quickly coming out after the debate, out thing fundraising numbers saying they raised three times as much in the debate last night as they had in any debate prior. no question marco rubio was rattled at least more so than we've seen up to this point. >> thanks so much. want to bring inmarkpreston the executive editor for cnn politics. and a lot of people are asking, we watched these debates before. marco rubio was so smooth. what happens last night. >> he got the new jersey treatment from chris christie who just was relentless on marco rubio calling into the question his executive experience, the fact that he is a u.s. senator and doesn't make any decisions. one of the most interesting

lines and there were very many of them saying, you know, a senator wakes up every morning wondering what 30 second speechky give. a governor wakes up and have to do something. >> you know as the politician the one thing you want to avoid is playing into whatever negative stereotypes exist of you. and for marco rubio the yod that he's robotics, rehearsed. let's listen here. >> let's dispel with the fiction that barack obama doesn't know what he's doing. he knows what he's doing. he's trying to change the country. the notion that barack obama is trying to change the country isn't true. >> there it is everybody. the speech. >> in it is. there it is. you heard christie say it. it was almost as the rubio walked right into it.

>> he did. and marco rubio used that line last night four times. chris christie set up this narrative and marco rubio walked into the trap with this very awkward phrase about barack obama and it not being a game. and i think what e saw last night is chris christie may not make it out of new hampshire. i think bush and kasich did extremely well. few if it is a republican president you will see chris christie be the attorney general. he firmed his way up and was the lead blocker for everybody else last night and maybe knocked marco rubio down to fourth or fifth place. >> he's not getting invited to the rubio super bowl party today. >> right. >> ben, in a multi candidate field, candidate a goes after b it doesn't necessarily help candidate a. sometimes it helps candidate c, if you know what i'm saying

here. so this morning who do you think benefitted most from the debate? >> i think donald trump certainly benefit. i think ted cruz benefitted. neither of them were the center of attention. neither got beat up. rubio really did. and chris christie had a night where it was very memorable. the only downside on everybody for the stage is when donald trump showed up for the debate i think they should have made him the center of the attack. not necessarily the attention but the attack. and they didn't do that last night can which only helps him after the bad showing in iowa. and rubio is now going to be fighting again to get in that fourth place, maybe even fifth place and that was probably the boris night for him debate iez since the beginning. and christ christie did an unbelievable job last night really defining him as the

new this morning, north korea has launched a long range rocket claiming it is carrying a

satellite for, quote, peaceful scientific purpose but the u.s. and other countries are denoun e denouncing the launch. >> this is the second time in over a month the dprk has conducted a major provocation threatening the security of the region and the united states. cnn's paula upon chancocks is l seoul. >> the launch happened at 9:00 a.m. pyongyang time. they say it took 9 minutes and 46 seconds if for satellite to reach report. as far as they are concerned it is working perfectly and they say they will launch many more. the question is did they launch a satellite? the defense minister says he

believes it appears to have a reached orbit but they county know if it is functioning as it should. and also are hearing about the the timing of this launch which is very interesting. the intelligence agencies here in south korea briefing lawmakers who in turn briefed us saying this is choreographed to be the before the lunar new year and also before the super bowl in the u.s. and wanted to make sure it was good weather conditions as well. they say they wanted to maximize the international attention. so a very interesting perspective will. but as you can imagine the international condemnation has come flooding in saying it is a challenge to world peace. and the japanese prime minister saying it is totally unacceptable. and even china one of north korea's very much few allies saying that it regrets that this has happened. >> and the fear is that this is a front for their ballistic

or die that. means something here. so for conservatives dog whistle for big government coming in and taking our property. >> in iowa it was identified as what could be the weakest issue. and jeb bush, do you think he got what he wanted out of that exchange, ben? >> i do. i think other candidates stepped up and also used it to their advantage. it's simple issue. should the government be table to take your private property and force you to accept it for another private entity. if you look at what trump was doing? he was building a casino. taking private property for a private casino to be built. and that is not a conservative value. and i think this is his probably biggest vulnerability on the campaign. and if you sell that to conservative concerned republican freedom voters.

that is something that can hurt trump. because he was building a casino. trying to use the federal government to strong arm people and force them to selling their property. i think others should also have stood up to that. it is one thing to use eminent domain for roads and highways and things like that, that truly are going help the majority of people. but most voters are just not going to think that is the right thi thing to do. >> i want to turn to the democrats and today is an interesting day because hillary clinton leaves new hampshire to go to flint, michigan. i should note cnn just announced we're hosting a debate on march 6th in flint.

tell us why she's planning to do with there trip. >> i think she's here -- i know she's here this morning in new hampshire and then priveting to go to flint. but flint you can outline larger issues. flint is about down the road. it is about south carolina and the march 1st tuesday state. and she's beginning to lay out a platform where she's speaking directly to minority voters, where she still have the advantage. just in south carolina this week yesterday chels clint was in south carolina. on wednesday bill clinton was in south carolina. one thing we do know is that bernie sanders cannot lose new hampshire. so we doesn't have the leeway to pop in and pop out of the state. we also remember that this time in 2008 hillary clinton was down nine points to a young man named

consequences. and that tells u.s. officials that this leader, kim jong unis even more unpredictable. so you might see a little more momentum for the u.n. resolution. i also think the fact that the u.s. is making quite clear in the hours after the launch that it is going to be discussing this thaad missile system with the south koreas shows they are very concerned. you heard the south korean president, park, say we don't know when north korea is going to launch its next missile or nuclear test and that is why we have to beef up our defenses and i think that is what they are doing in coordination with the u.s. >> thank you so much.

it. you could see that chris christie came out for it. i went up and talked to chris at one of the commercial breaks. i said to him, you keep spanking marco this way you are going to charged with child abuse tonight. chris christie and marco were look at each other, eye to eye. the room is silent. because marco has been an excellent debater. eloquent speaker. and it was like when a robot gets water and it was a shortcut. >> and this has been the biggest problem. he rarely goes more than 10 or 15 answers to a piece of his stump speech. and it was like a scene in the matrix where the matrix reloaded and just kept going back to the same moment. >> it reinforces the -- >> reinforces preexisting story line. and in that sense it may not quite as been as documentramati.

but it was kind of a where's the beef moment for him. chris christie raised the question of what have you accomplished besides reading a script. >> so what comes of this? mark you have had some intel and talked to the christie campaign a little bit. it is the governors who more than anybody wanted marco rubio to saufr little bit. >> we've been talking about this all week. and we were talk about the yesterday. chris christie had to come out and had to land several blows on marco rubio but he had to do it in a way that didn't like like he was out of control. he did not look out of control. and to the point of the pop culture reference it seemed he would go and punch rubio and rubio would substituter and he would let him stance again and come? and hit him again. and jeb bush had to come out and

go after donald trump. not only did -- you have to really have to look at the body language of these folks when they are delivering their lines. he should have done that months ago. >> i went --. practice does matter. and his candidate skills now are 180 from where they were six months ago. >> who benefits from all of this in the next two days? >> possibly ironically trump and cruz. one of the most important storylines of the entire campaign is that the center right lane has been fragmented between rubio, bush, kasich, christie. maybe new hampshire was marco rubio's opportunity to clear the lane and establish himself as

establishment acceptable alternative to cruz and trump. last night not only did rubio have a bad night but kasich bush and christie all had good nights and that is going to continue to fragment and may not get the consolidation in new hampshire people expect. >> the three governors were the one winner last night. >> they were. >> the problem is they are splitting the vote. >> right. >> first of all they can hardly hide the disdain they feel for these rookie senator whose haven't done anything. but they were like singing out of same him hymn. >> and there can be only one, maybe. they can't all win. you can't vote for all three. >> the -- [ inaudible ] >> -- said to me after the debate there are going to be more people viable after new hampshire -- >> we just don't know. >> ted cruz did not have a great night -- >> we have a lot nor say about

that and blamed it on cnn. he did it again in the debate. listen. >> they didn't correct that story until 9:15 that night. so from 6:30 that is what cnn was reporting. >> and that is an outright lie. let's explain what really happened. before the caucuses began our chris moody tweeted ben carson will likely speak in iowa before caucus results are in so he can catch a flight. then he added carson won't go to new hampshire south carolina, but instead will head home to florida for some r and r. he'll be in d.c. thursday for prayer breakfast and then he said ben carson's campaign tells me he plans to stay in the race beyond iowa no matter what the results are tonight. all of that, three tweets in less than two minute, more than 15 minutes before the caucuses opened in iowa. and then 45 minutes after he hit it again saying folks, ben

carson is just making a brief stop at home in florida tonight and campaign says he'll be back on the trail by wednesday even if that is what cruz is talking about this is well before 9:00 or later than that. yes our campaign staff talked about these tweets because they are unusual. think noted it would be strange for any presidential candidate to not go directly to new hampshire. but in no way, shape or form did they say ben carson is dropping out. that was an assumption made by cruz's campaign. this is something our executives have gone over with the campaign looking at the timeline. they have been called out by the dishonest handling of it. and so for the candidate to stand on the stage and say it again, it is false. it was false from the get go and it remains false. you can find out a whole lot more about our reality checks by going to cnn.com/reality check.

interest. there is not much public interest for a casino. >> that is determined by the city and the state. it is all governed by state laws. we can say that 1.7 million jobs is not important or the impact on the economy doesn't matter but people in those cities and states believe it does. >> if you had to do it all over again and if he were building another casino and there were another -- >> in terms of location he would absolutely go to the person and say this would create more jobs here. if that person agreed he'd purchase the home. >> the pouring of volunteers have been amazing. thousands of volunteers to phone call, to knock on doors for donald trump. and we're really excited. the folks here are excited. this state is heavily designed for donald trump. it is the live free or die state. and that is donald trump. >> donald trump said he wish he had a better ground game in

27 minutes past the hour and developing this morning, north korea has launched a long-range rocket claiming that it is carrying a satellite for peaceful scientific purposes. the u.s. and other countries are watching this and denouncing the launch calling it a front for a ballistic missile test. >> the south korea has released this statement. the government will have our military be in full readiness and push for realistic measures with the u.s. to strengthen national security capability. what else do we know about this launch paula? >> calle >> reporter: according to north

korea they said it took 9 minutes and 46 seconds for the satellite to reach orbit. they are calling it a success. north korean leader kim jong un is delighted with what has happened. he's ignoring criticism that's come flooding in over recent hours. south korea's defense minister says he believes the satellite appeared to reach orbit but he doesn't know if it's working at this point and might take time before they can confirm. we had a briefing from intelligence agencies. they said the timing of this launch is interesting. obviously weather is a factor. as the very clear day today and they needed that. but they also believed they timed it so it was one day ahead of the lunar new year and also

ahead of the super bowl to make sure it didn't clash with anything and they got maximum international exposure. we also understand they didn't practice a reentry mechanism. so an intercontinental ballistic missile needs that reentry but they did learn something from the satellite launch. they would have learned about guidance control and separation. and one more interesting factor, the u.s. and south korea are now talking about installing and deploying a new missile defense system here in south korea. it is called thaad. very controversial according to china. they are very dead set against this. they are concerned that the u.s. might be able to spy on their own launching systems and it would compromise their own launching systems but the u.s. and south korea say because of what north korea has done today they now have to consider it. victor, christi back to you. >> paula, thanks so much.

john berman here live many manchester, new hampshire. just two days to go now until this state, this famously independent and unpredictable state votes. the first in the nation primary. and just one morning after a really interesting republican debate that may have reshuffled this field going forward. so what does it mean going forward? i'm joined by the executive editor of cnn politics, mark preston. great to have you here. the super bowl is tonight. so in a sense we may be frozen here in new hampshire. what happens the next two days? >> certainly the next couple of hours. but certainly as you said the undeclared voters here who have never -- not republican, not democrat. and also the undecides. chris christie last night was going after those voters and did so very effectively.

i think you are going to see this mad sprint to the finish right now going into tuesday. because it really is do or die for several candidates. >> they needed to knock marco rubio off balance. that is what happened. that allows avenue for whom? >> it opens up the door for jeb bush. it opens up the door for chris christie again. who really needs new hampshire to move forward. he has an organization in south carolina i'm told so he can move forward even though he doesn't have much money. and john kasich who's been combative in past debates was a lot more conciliatory reaching out last night. >> he didn't want anything to do with that mix up there. it is interesting, you have the three governors. christie, kasich and jeb bush. none of whom went after each other at all. the conventional wisdom has been

that only one can emerge from new hampshire and they didn't go after each other. >> we have the donald trump lane t social conservative lane, the ted cruz lane, and then this sen tryst lane. andcenterist lane. and i can't imagine three will come out now but i think two will come out. >> you get the sense this morning we're back to muddled going out of new hampshire. >> which shows you how intense this race has been up to this point. really shows you the donald trump effect who has sucked so much oxygen out of this race. >> and we're looking about new hampshire two days from now but south carolina a week and a half from now. that's different how? >> going back to a more socially conservative voter. ted cruz is expected to do well down there.

and also donald trump, at least that is what polling tells us. who knows what happens after the new hampshire primary but the tough talk from chris christie could help him and jeb bush has strong ties in south carolina. >> and a family history down there. again, not to test the conventional wisdom too much but the rubio people had been spreading talks about the fact that jeb bush donors want to leave bush and go to rubio. people are just waiting for a chance to abandon that ship. but now with jeb bush having a good debate performance we -- bush may be holding that support for longer. >> if you were a deep pocketed republican voter looking to jump ship, you are now holding on. -- he is still holding on. >> and to explain why this is so up in the air here in new

of the north korean rocket launch. south korea and the u.s. are to formally discuss deploying the defense system after north korea successfully launched a rocket into space, and north korea claims that it carried a satellite. >> the u.n. secretary-general ban ki-moon called the launch deeply deplorable and a violation of the security council resolutions. paula hancocks is from seoul. we've got the uk, france, south korea, japan, all coming out condemning this, saying that they believe -- i mean, this is seen as a front for a ballistic missile test, not a satellite, per se. so wondering what the u.s. and these other countries are willing to do actionably after this? >> that's the question, christie and victor. there has been condemnation from around the world. north korean leader kim jong un is clearly unconcerned by that. he has gone against all the requests not to do the satellite

launch and he has carried it out. the north korean state-run media has shown today as being a very successful day. shown photos of the north korean leader looking happy. scientists applauding the rocket launching and have said that that satellite is, in fact, in space. we do now from the south korean defense minister, he believes the satellite may well be in orbit, but he doesn't know if it's functioning. so what can the u.s. and other allies do? there's a limit to what they can do. what they've done in the past is they have had strong sanctions and that is what they're going to do again. but up until now, it has not prevented these launches. >> all right, paula hancocks for us there in seoul. thank you so much. still ahead, it is the big sunday. everybody has their nachos and their wings ready. jerseys all ready. >> even at 8:00, we're talking about it. >> yes, tailgating ge ining beg. peyton manning is trying for that last super bowl victory. >> but the honors just keep coming for cam newton. super bowl 50 just hours away
