>> really do. mistakes not to repeat. that's a theme for the clinton camp up here in new hampshire. all right. let's dig into the big brains we have this morning. cnn reporter maeve reston, executive editor mark preston, and cnn lit cal analyst and editorial director for the national journal, ron brownstein. we are all talking about 2008. what is the state of play right now in the clinton campaign. the polls showed bernie ahead for a long time. there's good and bad reasons for that. where do they think their chances stand? >> they think they are going to close the gap somewhat the next couple of days. and it feels that way when you're out with bernie and hillary. but right now bernie sanders has a huge lead. and the energy in his crowds is just a totally different ball game than what you're feeling with hillary clinton here. her rally on saturday, which jeff and i were both at, a lot

of people from out of state. a lot of canvassers. and bernie in portsmouth. and he was blowing the door off. there is a big enthusiasm gap here. that's why we are seeing bill clinton come at bernie sanders a lot in the final days. >> mark, how did this go over in 2008 when bill clinton went more on the attack than he is right now? >> like a lead balloon. it was one of those moments you have to be careful -- well, back then. back then you're talking about the first african-american president. bill clinton said some things, had tried to downplay barack obama in south carolina. said, listen, jesse jackson won south carolina and where did that go. here now it is hipocracy. they were trying to hit bernie

hard. one of his number one issues is wall street money. guess what, bernie sanders went to fund-raisers where there was a lot of wall street money on cape cod. so it's about hypipocracy. >> first, i think bill clinton is raising an important argument. he's not the ideal messenger for it. the important argument is that bernie sanders is basically making the case unless you have the most ideological aggressive

solutions to all the problems, you are, a, bought it, or are a weak incrementalist. not to be for breaking up banks somehow makes you too pragmatic. you don't get the lift and the argument and the movement that the senator has been able to get. for clinton, this is not the critical line of defense. the critical line of defense is nevada and south carolina. that is where diversity comes to play. african-americans and south carolina, that is the line you cannot let cross. >> up until now, he had been sort of described as being a little lackluster, a little low ebb, a little subdued. now he is guns ablazing. why are they doing this one again? >> i think they feel they're in a very, very tight race, as we

all feel here. and it's time for people to actually look at bernie sanders's record in a much more robust way. and the attacks up until this point, she toggled back and forth between going after him and then backing off. and so bill clinton in some ways slides more perfect live into that role than hillary clinton, especially in the final days where people don't necessarily want to hear their candidates getting negative, particularly on someone like bernie sanders who is well-known here. he has tried to run a positive campaign. >> 2008 was about race also. >> sexism is another hot topic. >> first of all, i don't think americans like former presidents being that engaged in a direct hurley burley.

secondly, in this race the argument is that sanders is a movement against these giant forces inside the party. and having a former president deliver the punches against, you know, kind of a senator from vermont, just seems to reconfirm the idea of bernie against the machine. >> but you know what our problem is? we look at these folks like they're robotic. that's his wife. if someone came after my wife, i would throw a right hook and left hook. it is hard to sit back and see his wife get pounded and not jump in. >> this is a very different race. not only was the issue of race with barack obama but wound up becoming a difficult negotiating point for criticism, but bernie sanders presents a different animal. hillary clinton won in 2008 because it was machine against newcomer. she rebounded well from an energized caucus in iowa. this time the state of play is

very different. can she write up new hampshire? everybody thought i was going to lose. let's get to the real stakes where the demographics affect the country. is that a saleable thing? >> come on now. look at the history. her husband won here twice. she had this incredible comeback in 2008 with woman in portsmouth. it was a comeback moment. and i think for the clintons to claim that this is just a state where bernie sanders has a home state advantage is ridiculous. >> people a year ago in new hampshire were not following bernie sanders. i think partially true. partially not true. yes, it does reveal something. if she loses big here, it shows a problem with independents and

rhymes -- and ron brownstein. great to have you here with us at the waterworks cafe. this is the newly released poll. it exiles everything together and gets to an average. trump has 31% in new hampshire. that's a runaway lead. marco rubio was at 15%. cruz, 13%. kasich, who always put all of his eggs in the new hampshire basket, 11%. bush, 10%. and down from there. where do you think where marco rubio is? >> he got hurt. it was rope-a-dope what happened. it opened a ticket out of new hampshire. we were looking at four tickets out of new hampshire. going now on this monday, i think looking a at polls it's really not going to be helpful. there are late deciders. were donald trump is not going

to win by the margin he's leading by now. probably going to win but not by much. >> the one that probably matters most right now is the undecided. depending how you look at the calculus, you have somewhere between 25% and 35% of the people. it could change. we saw it play out in iowa. this idea of how many tickets got out of new hampshire, that was very dependent on somebody -- >> separating. >> marco rubio separating from the pack. this poll of polls helpful. he's going to say i want to talk about the monmouth poll where he tripled his support since january. what does that suggest? >> first of all,ive thought i was smelling bacon. it is desperation. not to get all zen here, it is something that doesn't happen. coming out of i eye, you had ted

cruz with a clear lane. donald trump has this stronghold. he did well with them. he's been leading. cruz and rubio combined in new hampshire. what people were hoping for in the republican leadership, senator right, mainstream conservative lane would consolidate behind marco rubio and he would separate. that process has hit a big speed bump. it is entirely possible we come out with at least two governors being viable. kasich, the longer that lane remains fragmented the better it is for trump and cruz. >> we haven't seen yet, first of all, with christie, whether he will hit a wall or not. some might purr receive him going too hard at rubio. with kasich and some of the

other candidates, where do they go after this. jeb bush has a strong organization in south carolina. he has a lot of establishment support around him. it's a good state for his family. strong veterans community. and i think that the question is whether kasich, if he has a strong performance on tuesday, where that goes, can he build the ground game. basically it just keeps the race going for some time to come. >> you saw this tremendous effort to consolidate. jindal, tim scott endorsed him. establishment leaders in the party saying, okay, this is the guy. what saturday night did, talking about eggs in the basket, is this where you want to put all of your eggs. a second look for others. >> when you talk to donors who were leaning towards rubio saying finally maybe this is our guy. is and watch that performance.

and that was it. >> simply the bush donors. >> one argument that is fairly compelling, and i want your comment on it, your take. stop calling rubio the establishment guy. he came in as a tea party guy. look where he has been on abortion. wyche are you confusing him with me, the governors are saying. is that a fair contrast. >> rubio rode in as the anti-establishment guy, ran against charlie crist who was slotted to be the vice presidential candidate several years back. he took out the establishment, rode in the tea party, came in the senate. when he got there, came to the center a little bit more and aligned himself with the establishment. so what is marco rubio? i don't think any of us know. >> he is clearly to the right. yesterday at his town hall when asked who are your supreme court

models, he said clarence thomas and anthony scalia. there is not nearly as much reaching out i can work with both sides as christie, kasich or bush. i think the defining gamble is he can spend most of his energy pushing, getting the voters to the right. and eventually they will feel they have no choice because he will outlast the others. >> particularly his abortion position as we go forward not wanting exceptions for rape and incest. that is going to continue to be a huge issue for some voters, particularly as voters look at who is the most electable candidate. >> and in new hampshire where many identify as pro-choice. thank you very much. great to have you with us. all right. there are other stories, believe it or not, to talk about. over to michaela.

donald trump still in the pole position entering the home stretch before tomorrow's primary here in new hampshire by any poll. he has a double-digit lead here. he's no longer getting all the attention. the focus is on who comes in second, third, even as deep as fifth. >> he was leading this time last week in the polls but he came in second. dana bash caught up with him after the debate. >> reporter: it was interesting. we were talking backstage before he spoke to a large rally in the northern part of the state. i continued to be struck how different his demeanor was. and that continued in this interview. >> let's talk about new hampshire and the state of the race now. who do you think is your biggest competition at this point? >> you never know. the polls came out two minutes

ago, and it looks very good. but the debate, i think i did well in the debate. most of the people said i did either well or won it. and it was very important for me to have done well in that debate. >> why? >> i think i needed it. it was a good thing. >> rubio did better than expected in iowa. he may have taken some of your votes. do you make of all the buzz around him? do you think it is important -- >> well, it was very interesting. because i could have one if cruz didn't take all the carson votes, which is a very sad thing, in my opinion. but i came in a strong second. frankly, after coming in second and rubio came in third. everyone was saying how good rubio did. i said, wait a minute, i never have done this before and i came in second and they didn't say how well i did. it was a strange debate.

it was important for a lot of people, including rubio. he had a lot of momentum and i think he might have lost that momentum. >> why? >> i wasn't focused on him. i focus on myself. >> why not focus on him? he is the person who has a lot of buzz. aside from you. you clearly have a lot of lead in the polls. >> yeah. >> it seems uncharacteristic not to be focused on him. >> i don't know if it is going to be him or someone else. i don't think bush did well in the debate. i thought he did not well at all. a couple didn't do too well. that's not for me to say. it's for you to say. >> talking to you now, watching you at your rally a couple days ago here in new hampshire i want to ask who are you and what have you done with donald trump? >> why? >> because you really seemed to have changed your tone. you have gone back to basics.

you're really not engaging. it's not happening now. i'm wondering if -- >> you mean that in a positive way? i hope so. >> i was wondering if you think that all of that was overshadowing your core message, which does appeal to people. that you are not bought and sold. you make deals. >> i've never done this before, dana. i am a businessman. i've never been involved with politics other than on the other side. >> the last couple of days you talked about something your father used to say to you, take the lumps out. >> yeah. >> are you taking the lumps out. >> my father did. he had the expression take the lumps out. i used that when i said i'm not giving iran back the $150 billion. >> are you using it in terms of your demeanor? >> it is possible. it's possible. i feel good about the campaign.

i feel very good about the way it's going. we're >> doug: really well in new hampshire. i hear there is a big snowstorm coming, which i'm not happy about. i guess we can't stop that. i think the debate was very important last night. i'm glad it's over. i'm glad we did well. >> even donald trump cannot stop the snowstorm. what did he tell you about the ground game. that's what it all comes down to? >> after iowa he was pretty can dade about the fact they didn't have the ground game they should have. in the next sentence they talk about how he got more votes than anybody in history because the turnout was so big in iowa. he didn't give a lot of specifics on what they are doing differently here. what he did say was, from his perspective, it's about the product. and the product of course is him. his job is to sell the product. so he's doing his job. >> do you think he's caught up

>> yes. >> why? >> we need a commander in chief who can start on day one. jeb has the record of a conservative leader. he has the experience. what he did for florida was great. he cut taxes, shrank government. for the first time florida had a aaa bond rating. that's the sort of experience we need. >> you have a lot of inside information about jeb bush. >> i have, yes. >> he's got a bump in momentum. some say polling shows he's making a move here in new hampshire. was your faith shaken up to this point about whether or not he could be a real contender here? >> polls are funny. they're not indicative of who i am seeing. jeb has been here for probably a year now. and what his message really resonates with voters, i know a lot of folks who are supporting him. so, you know, we're ready for

tuesday and we're feeling great about how things are going. >> shaken faith is a big theme in campaigns. they go up and down. you guys are dealing with an ebb in the rubio campaign. do you believe the hype? >> i'm not shaken in the least. i completely 100% back marco rubio. he would be the number one commander in chief. he is what our country need. i have had the chance to meet all the candidates so far. marco has been the only one individual who -- sorry. >> that's okay. politics is tough stuff. >> it is. you have to come on here, people looking at you. you know you made the decision that rubio was the one that you identified most. what can you point to? >> i really think he is here to

represent the new generation. he is younger. he understands our generation. he knows what he is doing with foreign policy. i think he will be tough on that. and i think he will be the next president of the united states. >> you have been inside and outside of it. when you look to your right and see a rubio supporter and bush supporter, are you worried about one or another and are you worried about the threat they pose to donald trump. >> not at all. there are so many people engaged in the process in the state right now. i met mr. trump about a year ago. it wasn't a question. i have known all the other candidates over the years. i have met them, seen them, haired them, followed what they do. i've been a member of the republican party for 25 years or so. when i met mr. trump, being a small businessman as i am, i knew his record of creating jobs

and being as accessible as he is and as many times as he comes to new hampshire, he was the only choice that i could see. he's not a professional politician. and i look forward to him going to the finish line. >> there is a plus minus on being an outsider. whatever label you want to put on it. you know how government works. what gives you the faith that donald trump can take his attitude, demeanor and experience, get into government. and if he acts the same way, get anything done in a some that, as you know, can clamp down on you very easily. >> well, he'll learn that very quick. he's a very smart guy. he didn't get to where he is by not being highly intelligent. i believe he will surround himself with all the right people that will get the job done for the american people. >> what do you think of his change and demeanor? first of all, do you believe that? do you think the media is just

hyping his last couple appearances and making it a trend? >> i think he's a good guy anyway. i have always liked him from the first time we met. i think the initial reaction that he was trying to get was he needed airtime. he needed people to know he's in the race. and people know he's in the race. they're obviously very concerned about it. that's why he is getting 24/7 coverage. he hasn't spent hardly any money on advertising. >> now that the votes happen, that is not going to be the same case anymore. the race is no longer about who is being hyped. it's about performance. and it will be interesting to see how the trump campaign adjusts. you're too smart. i'm going to hit you with what you can't prepare for. what place do you think jeb bush comes in in new hampshire? if he comes in seventh, do you

>> now, at the same time over the weekend, former secretary of state madeline albright said any young woman who doesn't support hillary clinton deserves a special place in hell. to be fair here, there are plenty attacks going side to side here. sit a sign that the democratic race, chris, is going to go on for a long time to come, well beyond new hampshire. chris. >> absolutely. in some circles criticism is a sign of respect. jeff, thank you very much. no question all hands on deck on the gop side as well. just hours left before the stumping ends and the voting begins here in new hampshire. the first primary in the season. donald trump posting impressive numbers in the latest cnn poll of polls. that is what it sounds like. we average them to give the widest, broadest pictures, not lean too much on any single

>> this is balmy. this is short sleeves weather. >> how can you translate it into a solid ground game? >> the ground game is we're in the final strokes of that. i think what we're really seeing is making the contact with voters, have the opportunity to make the calls. we're still door knocking. we have a massive turnout effort. we think the better the turnout, the better off we are. as you saw, we had 40,000 votes in iowa which is huge. the second highest number in a caucus. i think our efforts -- a lot of times people look at the ground game. they don't see it because we're not a conventional campaign. we still do the same things at the end that everyone else does. stkph you' >> you're still knocking on doors? >> absolutely. >> donald trump basically said he thinks the product is the

tactics. by the product he means himself. he said he thinks he has a great product and he doesn't put much stock in door knocking. >> this is not a compensational campaign. we have been saying that since day one. i remember the very first interview i did on your network with one of your anchors. i had this is not your dad's campaign. and i happened to be standing in an arena with 20,000 seats. and we had 20,000 people in it. so this is the way we have gone about our business. and he'll leave the tactics to us and that will be fine. >> trump relies on star power rather than a good ground game. >> oh, that's fine. great headline. and we love it. because, you know, the other part of it is a lot of times i think people grossly underestimate what's behind this campaign.

product is great. we have the best product in the market. and we're still pushing it out there. >> during the debate, donald trump and ben bush sparred over imminent dough nane. >> yes. >> and he talked about how he believes in the use of eminent domain and he has used it himself. how do you think that will be in the live free or die state. 73% say they don't like the concept of eminent domain? >> it is written into the constitution. it is the authority given to government to go out and procure a property for the public good. and the thing that is missed in all of this no developer anywhere memory has ever used eminent domain. it is an instrument of government. governments decide on eminent

domain. you ask yourself -- go to a small town of iowa, oskaloosa, iowa, walmart says we want that piece of property on that interchange on that road. so the city and the county have to use eminent domain to acquire that property in order to turn it over to walmart. that's the way this process works. >> sure. however the process works, republican voters don't like it. >> you know what, if you don't like what your city council does or your state legislature does, vote them the hell out of office. that's the reason we get into this. one of the biggest problems we have right now in this country is that the state and local level is the squeeze that's coming from the mandates from the federal government. that's why they are constantly looking for revenue streams. that's why we see these creative actions -- >> you say donald trump is on the right side of this and voters will think he is on the

right side. >> i carry the constitution in my pocket. eminent domain is part of the constitution, an instrument of government to acquire land for the public good. >> it is going to be donald trump's strongest competitor. >> after saturday night, i think that's in question. i think the debate was good for us. i thought the governors had good nights on the stage. and i thought the people that suffered the most body blows were marco rubio and ted cruz. >> the governors had good nights by all accounts. so who do you now consider the biggest competitors? >> what happens on tuesday here, tomorrow. i think if you -- what i see as a clumping or a layer of candidates that will come in in a second place position i think we're going to win. and we'll see how the spread is

and who emerges from the second pack to see. because south carolina is quite different. we have candidates that might do well here in new hampshire that don't have any traction at all in south carolina. and the only consistent performer across the board is donald trump. >> where are you responding the next 24 hours? ? i have a bunch of things to do. i told you off camera i have policy things for south carolina already. >> do you want to push anything out right now? >> no. we have a schedule. >> not giving us the scoop? >> you know better than to ask that. we'll push some things out as we get closer to south carolina. we have another debate this weekend. so we're getting ready for that. we will do a lot of media today. we're scattered all over the state. we brought in all hands on deck. everybody is scattered all over the state doing their part. >> great to have you. >> great to see you in person.

who is the next president -- because i think a democrat is going to be the next president of the united states. they want to talk about those issues. they don't want to talk about all these other things that have nothing to do with their daily lives. >> what do you think of this criticism that senator sanders is framing his campaign in a way that unless you are for the most extreme ideological positions that may solve many of the issues that face this society, you're a sellout. you're a mainstream insider. you don't want to get done. is that a fair notion how you can arrive at change, especially from someone who has been in the game as long as senator sanders. >> there's nothing extreme about what senator sanders is talking about. a little longer than i've been alive but not too long ago, education in this country was affordable, it was free. now college is upwards of

$100,000, $200,000. >> but his college program and the way it is free and the way it gets paid for, his health care proposal, he's a very extreme ideas in terms of the practicalities of washington. >> no. we pay for bernie's college affordability with a tax on all street speculation. that's a 00.2%. it is practical. there is nothing far outreaching. ist is a disservice to the american people to tell them they can't ask for real change. incremental change is not what poor people in america want. what folks are saying, the clinton campaign is saying we're going to go from yes, we can to, no, we can't. it is far reaching. some are lofty goals. senator sanders when we are at town halls, he is encouraging

them to think big. that is how we got the affordable health care act. that is how we are going to build with medicare for all payer system. >> this white-haired 74-year-old senator from vermont is resonating with young women. what do you think the issue is that's ignited that? >> i think the issue is young women like myself. i'm 26 years old. i joined senator sanders because he was thinking about the things i was talking about with my friends. economic in equality, student loans. i'm a young person with student loans. i'm working multiple jobs to pay rent and things like that. so he's really speaking about the real issues confronting everyday american people. and i think in this election, specifically young people, they want to know the issues. young people are the microwave

popcorn generation. but we care about movement. we want to see this change last. >> the idea of sexism, what do you make of gloria steinem? >> what did you think of that message? >> it was unfortunate. i believe in what he's talking about. and i support him. and i support julia barnes who led an amazing team. just yesterday we had 1,200 people out in portsmouth. we have four or five events today where the senator is hitting derry, manchester. >> coming off "saturday night live". >> was it their idea or your idea? >> i think we have to give credit to the folks at "saturday night live". but i'm happy that we're having a robust conversation about young people, young women getting engaged in the political

pizza and nachos. it's good to know you have a cheat day, even in the white house, chris. >> the key word when eating at the super bowl is more. >> more. >> more. >> more queso. >> that's right. i'll see you in a little bit. so just a day before the new hampshire primary here, and the democratic race is getting ugly. this time it's not hillary clinton throwing jabs at bernie sanders. it happens to be the former president of the united states bill clinton launching into a series of attacking against sanders here in new hampshire. is this working? what is the line, what's the balance, what's the expectation. let's bring in democratic strategist hilary rosen and jonathan tasini, author of the essential bernie sanders and his vision for america. hillary, there's only one definition of success often and that is winning. however, in a campaign, things

are long. things can sometimes get relative. do you believe that applies to how to look at what hillary clinton needs to do in new hampshire. is coming in first the only bar for winning? >> no. and she's not -- likely not going to win. and what she is doing, though, and she said it best herself, which is she is talking to the people in new hampshire, doing what she needs to do, acting like a candidate, assuring people that it matters. i think so much of what hillary clinton has to be done doing is simply engaging, letting people see who she is. she is extremely wonky. and that requires a conversation. it's not a sound bite. it is not a slap on the back, a glad hand. it is a conversation about where she wants to take the country. it's hard to do that on a one day. >> wonky is a term also applied to senator sanders. now he is turned into elvis.

what do you see as the engine of his momentum? >> he is talking about, aussie money said in the previous segment, what the voters want to hear, which is a political revolution. free health care for people cradle to grave. he's really ignited that kind of energy and enthusiasm we haven't seen in a long, long time. >> he has been talking about it for a long time. what do you make of this criticism of the risk of overpromising. nancy pelosi comes out and says this single payer thing is not going to happen. is there a risk that, yes, you are telling people what they want to hear, but you can't deliver and you're setting them up for disappointment. is that a fair criticism? >> no. when he's inaugurated in 2017, we will win the general election. he wants to see millions of people get engaged.

he looks as it as a 10-year project. you have the start somewhere. when john kennedy said we're going to reach the moon. oh, that's crazy. you go through history. when you look at millions of people trying to get marriage equality. we never imagined five years ago that the supreme court would rule in favor of marriage equality. that took a lot of work and a lot of people in the streets and trying to push and build a movement. >> is simone sanders, the press secretary for the sanders campaign says, bernie is, yes, we can. hillary is, no, we can't. fair criticism? >> well, no, it's not, no, we can't. i think she's been pretty aggressive about her policy proposals, the things she wants to do. you know, if you look at her, what she has done, foster care for kids started as a dream. it became a reality. children's health insurance started as a dream but became a reality. so she clearly has some experience with the dreaming.

but there's no question that she could use a little more dreaming and he could use a little more practical reality. and i think democrats are struggling right now with that very question. how much is this about our, you know, only our hopes and dreams and how much is this really about a governing process with a president we know is going to be taking office in a fairly divided country. >> entering the picture for hillary clinton is bill clinton, dropping the hammer on barack obama. happening now with senator sanders. here's the recent salvo from clinton. >> anybody who takes money from goldman sachs couldn't possibly be president. you heard that sort of in the last debate, haven't you? after they see it in the report yesterday, he may have to tweak that answer a little bit. either that or we're going to have to get us a write-in candidate.

>> so when you hear that, that is a dicey message. and an unusual messenger for it. >> yeah. >> what do you think? >> let's start with the message. it turns out bernie sanders has been part of a significant number of democrat senate committee fund-raising outreach to wall street and other places. so there's a little bit of disingenuousness in his purity. having said that, bill clinton is not a good messenger to attack bernie sanders or anyone else for that matter. he's her husband. he gets too engaged, too emotional. what he thinks is i'm a former president and a damn popular one. so i have credibility to say this stuff. but people really at this point are seeing him as her husband. he's got to pay more attention to that. >> give me a quick take, what do you think the spread is going to be? >> i don't want to do any

betting. i think we'll win. i've been out in new hampshire the last few days. the more important thing is the kind of energy and message, which is a political revolution and going on to the next states, the energy that's already out in the super tuesday states. it's going to be an interesting race. i think we are going to win. i can't tell you what the spread is going to be. >> i don't think he wins, bernie sanders wins, until he gets off his talking points about the problems in the country. he only talks about the problems. he very rarely talks about the solutions. people need to hear that more. in some respects hillary clinton talks too much about the solutions and not enough about owning, recognizing the problems. >> let's see how it bears out in new hampshire. it's always the best judge of your effectiveliness. on the other side of the ball, who do we have? florida senator marco rubio. he is trying to deal with an ebb in the campaign. he came down in the debate. that's the way it goes.

how do you recover? chris christie is saying he can't recover. well, what does governor jeb bush say? he knows marco rubio better than anyone else. we have the takes from all the big shots straight ahead. seven. i just wish one of those people could have been mrs. johnson. marco rubio having to defend himself ahead of tomorrow's primary after his rivals went on a full-scale attack during his lackluster debate performance. are the governors exacting their revenge now. here to discuss jeb bush and a surrogate for hillary clinton's campaign. great to have both of you with us for the waterworks cafe. have you had a chance to talk to him about what went wrong during that debate? >> it is an intense time right now. we have a primary in one day. no, we're not doing much talking these days. but, look, i was sitting four rows away from the debate. it was an incredibly intense moment. chris christie went at him with everything he had. i've got to tell you this, i

was -- by the fourth time he was repeating the exact same words verbatim. i was concerned for his health. marco is too good. >> so what do you think happened? why was he on that repeat cycle? >> i can't explain it i think he was overcaffeinated and overrehearsed and somehow his cables got crossed, he short circuited. it w and chris christie did not let up. i can't explain the way he was holding on that podium and looking at him directly, taking him on. it was a very intense moment. >> what did you see going on on the stage? >> i thought i was watching the rousey fight.

the only thing missing was clicking the cymbals. what america is saying, it's not about saying the right things. it's about having the right stuff. unfortunately, he does not have the right stuff. when you have the former speaker of the house taking an ad out saying this guy is not commander in chief material, listen to the folks in florida telling you about their own native sun. >> i do think marco did very well later on in the debate in the exchanges about foreign policy. i also think he had a solid answer on the issue of life. he stuck to his convictions. for him it's a faith issue. but i think the stuff at the beginning with that repetition verbatim four times was devastating. it had an effect. it made a dent. people are wondering is he too scripted. the thing about new hampshire is when you go to new hampshire town halls and folks who aren't

here should look at them on live stream, people go in and they open up their souls to you, man. they ask you real questions, tell you their real problems. and they want real answers. they don't want scripted answers. marco needs to let loose, let go, let go. he needs to be himself. >> marco's slip-up, who benefits most? >> no doubt about it, people with actual experience. america is saying we want a chief executive officer -- >> meaning a governor. >> a governor. chris christie did a wonderful job. he was the prosecutor there, no question about it. he called out senator rubio for what he was. i think governor kasich, governor bush, and donald trump. people with real executive experience. and i've got to tell you, that's why secretary clinton is the right woman for the job. >> but there's a balance, right? it is the row plant similar and then the rules. so it has to happen versus what people want to happen. isn't that something plaguing

secretary clinton and her campaign. saying i believe, i dream, i hope from sanders and her saying i know how to get it done. how do you inspire the heart while compelling the mind? >> well, it's an interesting question, chris. the fact of the matter is when you're selling a socialist revolution, you promise everything. senator sanders is saying i'm going to give you free health care, free education, i'm going to tear down wall street. he's offering free uber, free starbucks coffee for all young millennials. >> not to a middle-aged hispanic woman? >> i come from the state of florida. as you know, ana, a lot of folks left countries with social issist revolutions will we had them in cuba, venezuela. you had them in your home country of nicaragua. you know where they are right

now? miami. in florida, it will sell flat. >> half of us are in new hampshire today. jeb and marco rubio, there are more people from miami in new hampshire trying not to kill ourselves walking through the snow. and i can't even begin to tell you. i think bernie sanders you have hillary clinton who is much more guarded and scripted. i will say this to hillary clinton and her allies, please stop trying to guilt women into voting for a woman. for her to say that there is a special place in hell for women who don't vote for women and don't help women is just wrong. that doesn't rub young women the right way. sell her to me, persuade me on her qualifications. do not guilt me because of her body parts and gender.

new hampshire, the state where donald trump is carrying a double digit lead, this from the latest poll on new hampshire voters. >> sounds like the situation heading into iowa with the caucuses but he has a much bigger margin and is expected to keep it. what has changed is him. who knows it better than cnn's chief political correspondent dana bash caught up right after this weekend's debate and you noticed it right away. >> it is true. he certainly is still tough but not hurling the insults, kind of one after the other. he is going much more back to basics. i started by asking him that question. >> i have to say talking to you now, watching you at your rally a couple of days ago here in new hampshire, i kind of want to ask who are you and what have you done with donald trump? >> why? >> you really have seemed to

have changed your tone. you have gone back to basics. you are really not engaging even talking about the fact that you are a counter puncher. >> you mean that in a positive way? >> i was wondering if you think that was overshadowing your core message which does appeal to people that you are not bought and sold and you can make deals? >> i have developed a certain confidence. i have never done this before. i'm a businessman. i have been a very successful businessman. i have never been involved in politics. >> you talked about the fact that you could have had a better ground game in iowa. you built your company on doing things. what lessons have you learned from iowa? what are you doing differently to get people out to the polls. >> the polls are amazing in a sense but the real poll is coming on tuesday.

the real poll comes on tuesday. >> are you doing more phone banking? >> it is a science up to a point. you still need the product. if i give you the wrong product you can do the social engineering and not going to get it. >> i think i have done my job. i have given them the product. the product is me in a sense. but you can have all of that in the world. if you don't have the right person it is not going to matter. so we have done well. >> are you saying what is going -- >> i still believe most important thing is the person doing the talking and the message. i think that is more important than people knocking on doors. i may be wrong about that. we'll see what happens. tuesday will be a big day. i'm very, very happy the debate is over with. i enjoyed the experience. >> you keep saying that. >> there was a lot of pressure on the debate.

i will be honest. for everybody, not just for me. and there is more pressure when i see you and all of your people and everybody else saying this is a vital debate for trump. i wish i didn't hear it. when i hear jeremy saying this debate is vital for trump it makes it more pressure. i have always liked pressure to be honest with you. i sort of like pressure. it came out very well. >> one last question. you did very well in iowa. not taking that away from you. as you know because you built a brand on understanding that perception is everything. and the perception was that you would win iowa. if you don't win in new hampshire, what is that going to do to your brand? is it a damage? >> if i had two seconds i think i'm doing okay, i much rather win. if i came in second or third i would be thrilled that way we lower expectations. i know all about expectations. if i came in second i wouldn't

be happy. so now if i come in second you can say -- i would much prefer to win in new hampshire. >> for him to say anything else nobody would probably believe because he is so high atop most polls he does have pretty far to fall. if he does take that fall it is hard to see him recovering from that. >> you got more candor out of donald trump than i have seen in a long time. that was great talk. thanks for sharing that. we have live interviews with jeb bush and john kasich. >> i know i have an uphill climb. >> the most important foreign policy issue was the war in iraq.

critical hours before tomorrow's new hampshire primary. our new cnn poll of polls, the average of all polls has donald trump in the commanding lead at 31% for the gop race. the florida senator trying to rebound from that shaky debate performance that had hisvivals pouncing. >> the biggest number in any poll you see about the gop is the undecided. as many as one-third trying to make up their minds. donald trump we did a piece saying he is the new gentler kinder one, not so much when it comes to governor jeb bush. he sent out a tweet saying not nice things. we will talk about the impact. what does it mean for donald trump. does it matter to governor jeb

bush? we have him with us right now. thank you very much. we will talk about your opponents in a second. i was with your people last night, some of them. there is a lot of energy and expectation around what happens in new hampshire. let's cut right to it. how big a deal is what happens to you here tomorrow? >> it's important because i spent a lot of time here. we have hundreds of volunteers from outside the state plus all of the army of people that are supporting me in state. i expect to do well. i can't decide ed -- i'm not in charge of what well is. it's a great place for me to campaign because i have communication skills and can complete a sentence and a thought. the twitter feed part of this is important in politics and it is important to engage with real people and the town hall meetings is a great format. >> do you have a sense of urgency about tomorrow? does this matter more than iowa

did? >> it does matter more because i have spent more time here. you can't deny that. wednesday morning i will be at hill head. we are -- >> you are moving on. the talk about only so many tickets for governors out of this you are saying i'm moving on. >> absolutely. >> so big head lines, enough game but not new hampshire game. yet peyton manning won the super bowl last night. what did you take from that victory? >> peyton, i'm so happy for him personally because it is probably his last game. good defense wins. and you never know what the outcome is going to be. ca carolina was the favorite but they didn't win. >> it's interesting, a window

into you. i set you up about the super bowl. peyton manning maxed out as a supporter for your campaign. you were not in the jeb bush horn tooting business. do you think that has been a liability for you in this particular election? >> i think peyton probably wants to celebrate without having be associated with me. financially he is a supporter. so is eli, for that matter. they are a great family and i appreciate their success. >> you are a study in contrast for the man at the top of the poll. he put out a tweet saying this guy doesn't have communication skills why he needed the super bowl commercial. what is your response? >> if i was so unimportant why does he focus on me? maybe because i'm the only candidate running for president that takes him on. >> you called him a loser the other day. >> he has gone bankrupt four

times. taking on an elderly woman to take her property to create a parking lot for limo drivers. i measure strength on how you lift people up and how to try to create policies to give them a chance. >> you have increased your attacks early on. you didn't want to go at him in that way. was that a mistake? >> i have been confronting him. i called him a jerk. he has called people far worse than that. when you call john mccain a loser because you are in a pow camp that is outrageous. or mock the disabled. people are hurting. people are struggling. more than half the people are living paycheck to paycheck. to have a president pushing people down would be an absolute disaster.

>> what do you say to the people who support him to get their support? i like that he says how it is. he is different than the other guys. what do you say to them in. >> i respect the fact that people are supporting him because they are looking for someone to go solve the problems. the reality is donald trump won't solve the problems. that's the disappointment will be should he be in a position he won't be able to deliver. people are hurting. i get why people are latched on to him. he is the big guy on the stage. there is nothing that suggests he could forge consensus to deal with entitlement challenges. the questions i get are how to preserve and protect social security and allow it to exist for my children. what are you going to do about the drug epidemic. >> how big a deal was what happened saturday night? >> in politics as you know when

there is a -- when it is a validation of what the perception is, it is bad news. in marco's case he is not as cry scripted. he is a gifted speaker and gifted person. he has nothing in his background to suggest that he could make a tough decision. it's possible he could but there is nothing -- he has never had a job where he has had to tell people no. never had to forge consensus. that became apparent on saturday night. >> you took shots. what were you feeling for marco rubio? >> he is a friend. >> what did you feel for him? >> it is not comfortable for me to attack marco rubio, but i do think that everybody needs to be challenged because whoever is the republican nominee better

fasten seattle belts. this is bean bag compared to what is going to happen. being tested is important to why new hampshire is important. >> when you have to deal with perception and reality in elections all the time, he was someone you helped raise politically. for him to be getting more attention and seen in the polls and media as a better choice than you at a certain point in time, how do you handle it? >> he has to earn it. he is not going to get a layup. the whole washington establishment can't just say part the waters, marco's coming. the debate on saturday proved why that is important that all of us get challenged. we have a long way to go. not a single delegate has been selected. some are likely to be selected out of iowa. there is no coronation necessary yet. let's have a couple of skirmishes. >> your mother and brother came

out. i sensed that you seemed different. you have been dealing with who your family is. i'm familiar with it. i know how it works. it's a big name. it's a big respected brand, bush. you were different with your mother there and your brother there. your chest seemed bigger. does it matter to you to be a bush? is it something that is not a liability if you are to be honest about it, but that you feel a responsibility to it? >> that's a great question. it's not a burden. it is a blessing. it complicates my life on level because there is a higher expectation for me. you have experienced that, i'm sure. it is something i'm proud of. maybe i am showing off for my mom. >> who knows? george has a campaign with me personally but the fact he has been helpful is fantastic. >> what goes through your heart when you look at your brother

saying my brother is the guy and your mother saying this man has the right stuff, do you feel a responsibility to them like i have to deliver for my people, the country and i have to step it up? >> what i sense is when i'm with my family unconditional love first and foremost. i don't want to let anybody down. the expectations on me are higher for me. i put much more of a burden on me. the hardest part of campaigning is when you are the brother of a candidate or the son of a candidate rather than being candidate yourself. it is much harder to be my wife watching this or for me when i was campaigning for my dad. >> you would rather take the hit than watch your family take it. >> absolutely. completely agree. it's part of this process. it resonates. people love my mom and love my dad particularly here in new hampshire. the stories i hear are

phenomenal. it has been more than one election cycle. george is probably the most popular republican in the country. >> when is the last time the republicans won the white house without bush on the ticket? >> ronald reagan. back to another generation. >> that matters to you carrying on the name. >> what matters most is that 50% of americans are living paycheck to paycheck. we are changing as a country and we better get back in the game to allow people to rise up again. >> what is the one thing you want everybody to know about a man. >> my motivation isn't about me but about service. i have the skills to fix the mess that exists in washington. >> new hampshire. lots of issues face this place. there is one that nobody knows enough about. the drug problem here is off the charts. they lost 400 people in the most

recent calculation. they only have a million people come out to vote. 400 people lost to drugs. this is not a policy discussion for you. it is personal. when you are hearing these stories you had your wife there at some of these. you lived it with your daughter and the family always lives it. what does it mean for you to hear these stories? what does it do to your heart? >> it is so powerful. >> for families it is just devastating, sucks the life out of you because you love your child with your heart and soul. to see in my case to see my daughter spiral out of control and in a public way because i was governor at the time was really hard on us. the fact that she is drug free for the last decade now is the

success story. you can look in the crowds and see people crying, see people just hurting. i can look at people and know they have gone through this. alcohol addiction, pain killer addiction and now the supplanting of opiates with heroin is devastating. in florida we created a strategy and a policy. we had some effect. i think they are going to get their act together up here, as well. >> the momentum seems to be there. there was a shift in recent polls. in one of them your number tripled. >> thanks for being on "new day." on the democratic side bill clinton accusing bernie sanders and his supporters of sexist attacks. the former president unloading on the vermont senator saying he is living in a sealed box.

in manchester with more on that. >> reporter: not exactly on message there but that is what we have come to expect from bill clinton trying to shake sense into the voters of new hampshire in one friend's words. trying to get them to look closer at bernie sanders' record. it is a sign that this race is closer than he ever would have imagined. >> when you are making a revolution you can't be too careful about the facts. >> former president bill clinton unleashing a blistering attack on his wife's rival bernie sanders going after sanders' health care plan. >> is it good for america? i don't think so. >> reporter: labelling sanders as dishonest and hypocritical in his criticism of the financial sector he rails against. >> anyone who takes money from goldman sachs can't be president. he may have to tweak that. >> reporter: the words were stinging, blasting the vermont senator and supporters for what

he called inaccurate and sexist attacks including the mobs of supporters who use crude language to attack hillary clinton backers online. >> people have gone online to defend hillary and explain why they supported her have been subject to attacks that are literally too profane and sexist to repeat. >> reporter: sanders disavowing such tactics. >> anybody who is supporting me is doing sexist things, we don't want them. i don't want them. that is not what this campaign is about. >> reporter: senior adviser to the sanders campaign tells me they are disappointed by comments fraum former president and bernie sanders will stay on message here. this shows how tight the race is going into final day of campaigning. sanders and hillary clinton will be campaigning across new

in just hours the first votes will be cast in the new hampshire primary. let's hear from one republican candidate putting it all on the line in the granite state. governor john kasich joins us now. good morning. >> good morning. >> you are the person who has said with all six votes you have said you put all your eggs in the new hampshire basket. how are you spending your next 24 hours to win over all of the undecideds still in new hampshire? >> well, it's sort of like that pink floyd song, run like hell. that's what we are doing except in a bus. we are going all over the state. we are not -- we don't have the

windows open on our bus. we will be cruising. we have three or four town hall meetings. my wife is here so i'm excited about that. and then we have plans for the bus to head to south carolina. we have people on the ground there. we anticipate doing well here and moving on. >> i love the pink floyd reference. the national chair of your campaign said, quote, the people choosing in the last week are breaking for kasich. how does he know that when half of new hampshire voters say they are not fully decided yet? >> because he is a very wise man. he graduated from m.i.t. and they tell me that people who graduate from m.i.t. have mind meld. that is how he knows they are

going to vote. he has had a lot of experience he was raised on his daddy's lap. the fact is he is shrewd although i think he went for carolina yesterday. >> do you feel something shifted after saturday night's debate? there was the feeling that it was the governors against the senators and the governors won in the debate. one headline revealing how some people felt about it. kasich and bush should end christie roses. that is what the "washington post" says. do you feel that the whole dynamic has shifted? >> not really. i don't overemphasize the debates. we felt we were rising.

we were in second place in most polls. it is built on an amazing thing, grass roots organization. you can't believe hundreds of people knocking doors. i don't mean like 200. i mean more than that. people have flown in and driven in from all over the country. we have a great team in new hampshire. you win elections with the ground game in a state like this. so i think the debate helped me because people got to see more of my personality and like they are seeing with this interview. but at the end of the day i put my trust in the people on the ground. we have been like that little engine that can and we are going to roll through the tape and we are going to kind of duplicate this going forward. >> let's say things go your way and you win new hampshire, you don't have the infrastructure in

the next states. what would you do? >> not listen to pundits. they haven't been right about anything. remember they said he wouldn't get in. he wouldn't have the money and wouldn't make the debates, he will have to drop out before new hampshire. he doesn't have the infrastructure in south carolina. yes, i do. we will do well in south carolina. we will be raising lots of money and will spend a lot of time in michigan. we think that is important for us. a lot of people who were here will be shifted. one of our key stars from iowa is now in south carolina. we have people there. we have been working there. we are fine. we are fine. this will give me a good performance will give the name identification, resources we

need. the other thing i watched on television is the golf channel. i love you but i'm not watching all that news. >> well, you are missing a great show with new day. do you think that all -- >> i'm taping it. >> do you think all three governors can make it out of new hampshire alive? or are you hoping one goes on or do you think there could be many winners out of new hampshire unlike past years? >> i don't know. we know we are going to be able to assess how we do. i don't worry about anybody else. i mention i watch the golf channel. i don't look at leaderboards. i play the best game i can and get into the clubhouse and assess how well i did in the golf tournament. same is true in elections. i'm not worried about anybody

else. my daughter is a runner. i tell her from what i understand you look side ways. you are losing. you run straight ahead and get your mind focussed on the finish line, not on anybody else. >> governor, i know you pride yourself on having run a positive campaign, that you are not engaging in name calling. during the course of this, haven't you ever just wanted to call one of your opponents a dummy? >> not really. there is a sort of fraternity. maybe wrong words because of carly. anybody wanting to work day and night, having the anxiety of having to raise money and 50,000

polls come out and all of that. anybody that goes through that why would you want to call them a name? there are some people you might want to call a name but they are not the people that are competing against you. i'm not telling you who it is. i have been very happy with this. i have had a great time. it's been a great life lesson. and i'm really happy about keeping our integrity and our heads up high we'll see what happens tomorrow night. >> we always appreciate you taking time for new day. >> my new band i want y'all to pay attention, 21 pilots, graduates of worthington christian. they are stressed out but in this kasich campaign we are not. >>. after what happened saturday night you have to look at the governors differently. chris christie was going after marco rubio on stage. the polls show kasich and bush making a move in new hampshire. how much of a move? let's bring in david gregory. former moderator of "meet the press." what did you see and hear in those interviews? >> i think they were both important because just as you

said, these governors have this new life. we came out of iowa and said rubeio is the big winner even coming in third with a strong third. he is going to consolidate that conservative vote. not so fast. this poor debate performance means that rubio lost some momentum. at least one of these governors is going to live to go on tasouth carolina and maybe farther from there. kasich has an opportunity to say to democratic voters in new hampshire come vote for the republican primary which they can do. this is a race where you can really make an impact. he has a more independent mind and message, more crossover message. bush distinguished himself like keeping the fire on donald trump as the guy to take down trump and be tough enough for clinton. >> is there anyway all three

governors all live to fight another day after new hampshire in. >> i think it will be tough. if you are chris christie you want to demonstrate that you can build yourself up. where is the game moving forward. you have bush at 10%, kasich at 11%. they are knocking on the door. christie has been living up in new hampshire. it is a money issue. you go down to south carolina and towards march 1. you can't do that hand and mouth. this is a pretty big race and there is a lot more pressure in the republican party to consolidate. you have these various lanes. trump is the reality star in the alternative lane. you have the question of who will consolidate this republican vote. cruz is out there. he will do well in the south perhaps and won iowa. there is a lot of sorting out

that has to be done. i think it is a money issue and pressure to tell other governors we have to get this thing smaller if we have an effective nominee. >> david's pointing to the key word, consolidate about how you do and how everybody else does. whatever the margin of separation is in this race will have as big an outcome as any. look at the other side of the ball. what do you make of bill clinton coming in strong against bernie sanders? what is the plus/minus on that? >> it is a little bit risky especially with bill clinton who got into trouble with this in 2008. i don't think he is the same kind of candidate and the same kind of figure. we know how popular he is on the democratic party on the democratic side. i think they are trying to get a little bit of vote on their side. they are trying to send a bigger message to the establishment of

the party which is swooning going on for bernie sanders has to be rethought as a reality check, what it means to the party, so we will see what the plus/minus is on this as we look at the vote. sanders is obviously in a good position. i think they are make ag broader statement. as we said before, she has a lot of running room here as she keeps going deeper into the race. their whole mindset is different. they know they are preparing for a long game. they are prepared to do that in a way i think they weren't prepared in 2008. >> back to the bill clinton factor here. given it didn't go over so well in 2008 when he went after barack obama and it sort of back fired, why are they trying that again? >> look what happened in 2008. let's not forget hillary clinton won new hampshire.

she had a real heart moment when she was speaking back in 2008 talking about what was at stake for her. she showed a little more of herself and got more of that constituency back. that was a huge upset for the obama campaign. we don't know if that will happen here. they are looking for some surprise. she made the decision to pin his ear back, taking him on where he may be a hypocrit on taking money from wall street and taking her on in smearing him. there is a populism in the party they are trying to say we have to be realistic about it. >> david gregory, thank you very much for making us better. always great to have you on the show. >> see you tomorrow. no question you have just two people in the race on the democratic side. there is a lot of unknown in the outcome even in new hampshire. what is the margin going to be?

the senator from neighboring vermont leading in the polls here in new hampshire, continuing to attack hillary clinton's ties to wall street. now comes the counter attack from the clinton campaign in the form of former president bill clinton saying hold on a second, sanders has ties to wall street, as well. you need a write in candidate if you want somebody with no ties to wall street and accusing of sexist attacks. how is this working? what does it mean for the state of play now going forward? we have somebody with great insight, new hampshire senator

jeanne shaheen has endorsed hillary clinton for president. >> nice to have you here for the primary. >> it is a wonderful state and good to focus on it now and always. so let's take a look at the state of play. one of the things taken as a given, women for hillary. the history of it. she would be the first female president. and yet in iowa, in the polls young women love bernie sanders. why? what does it mean for the secretary's chances? >> you will have to ask them why they are supporting bernie. >> all of them? what is your take? >> a representative sample. i'm supporting hillary not because she is a woman. i'm supporting her because she is smartest, most experienced, best proposals of any candidate in this race, democrat or republican. that is the criteria which i suggest people judge when they decide who to vote for. >> is there concern about

shaming on this issue? everybody respects madeleine allbright, what she said about a special place in hell. powerful words. is there a risk in those kinds of statements? >> the fact is i think hillary put it well. she said i understand there are a lot of young people and young women who are with bernie. i hope that eventually they will be with me because i'm always going to be for them. i think that's an important way to talk about it. the issue here is not hillary a woman or a man? the issue is she is the best person to get the democratic nomination. she is the best person to be president because she doesn't need on the job training. she has had the foreign policy

experience. she understands what is going on domestically here in this country y. want somebody who doesn't just talk about the issues but somebody who knows how to get things done. >> on the state of play in the campaign, 2008 you lived it. you knew the situation very well against senator barack obama and hillary clinton. the president came out, came strong. there was controversy. your family got involved on talking about barack obama. there was controversy. what is the risk in coming up hard and heavy against bernie sanders right now? >> he is stating the facts that bernie sanders has gone to wall street and solicited for democrats and i understand he is hillary's husband. my family gets upset when i'm attacked, too. i think people appreciate that and understand it and they are going to make a decision not based on what bill clinton says but based on who hillary is,

what she has done and what she is proposing for the country. >> you democrats love to dream and inspire people to think big and go big. that is what bernie sanders is doing. the theory of the case with the clintons, she deserves to be named her own way. you see how confusing it is when you bring in bill clinton. make that compelling. it is being reported by sanders side as she doesn't want you to dream and can't do anything big? they are saying that is the energy behind the momentum. >> i have seen hillary clinton do big. when she was in the white house and worked to get children's health insurance through it meant we in new hampshire -- i wad governor then, we could ensure tens of thousands of kids whose families have never been able to get them health insurance. i think that is what hillary has done. i think it comes with not just the dream but with saying i want to do these things but i also

know how to get them done. i also think we are looking at a national security election come november. we are already seeing that from the republicans. we need somebody who understands the threats that this country faces. hillary clinton understands. she is recognized around the world. she knows who the north korean dictator is and the response that we should be giving to russia to the isis threat. i want somebody who can be commander in chief. >> message from the campaign not who hillary clinton is but what she is that makes her the best. >> appreciate having you. great state you have. >> i hope you enjoy the snow today. >> what is not to like? the voters are going to decide who matter and who doesn't and by how much here in new hampshire. the question, can hillary clinton pull off a surprise victory? can she do much better than people think and why? what determines it?

to you. daniel, you have less than 24 hours. what are you waiting for? >> i'm more focussed on the outcome of democrat being elected than a particular candidate. i think it is critical given major issues, action on climate change and issues of foreign policy. the question is who can not only win the primary but win the general election. >> are you leaning in any particular direction? >> i guess what makes me more undecided is the strength of bernie's campaign. i think it is great and good for the party. i think it is good for the process. but i'm surprised actually. >> you are a bernie sanders supporter so much so that you have begun knocking on doors and trying to bring other people around. what about hillary clinton's

argument against him. you have to be able to get things done and only i know how to do that. >> i don't think it is pie in the sky ideas. these are things that we can make happen if we work together. if you go to any of his rallies the point that i hear time and time again is no one single person can make this happen, not me as president and not hillary clinton as president can get the things done unless we work together and say enough is enough and things have to change and people in washington have to represent us. >> you support hillary clinton. you have for a long time. have any of bernie sanders attacks or criticisms of her begun to kind of challenge how you think of her particularly ties to wall street? >> i have sort of enjoyed this campaign and i think it is a good thing. i'm glad hillary has been able to be challenged. so i think overall it helps make

her progressive policies stronger and her performance at the debates have increased my support for her. >> how do you explain that women are supporting bernie sanders than hillary clinton? >> i think it's a combination of a lot of enthusiasm for bernie. in my opinion if you look at the issues hillary is strong for women and will fight for women and a lot of issues with labor rights and equal pay, things that i care deeply about i think she is the best candidate for us. >> you said you are interested in general electability. do you think that nationally beyond iowa and new hampshire they will have that same resonance? >> i think that the republican play book of late really clinton has been to attack the democratic elected president before he took office.

so they did that with clinton and obama. i worry a little bit what the right wing reaction will be to a bernie sanders candidacy and how he will deal with that and how he will bring congress together on some of his agenda. that's where i am. >> what about that? bernie sanders is seen as being more to the left wing of his party and given how hard it has been for the president to work with congress, how would that work if bernie sanders were to make it to washington? >> well, i'm not particularly worried what is going to happen because with any president if the people stand behind them we can get things done. i think barack obama had a lot of difficulty working with the senate and house because we weren't pushing people we have elected to go with the president. not a lot of us were writing

saying this is exactly what we want or i don't agree with this. i think we want to be more involved. >> do you think level of engagement that will help? >> greeted with stray chickens if you are in the middle of some rural areas. sometimes you get really nice people. there are people when you talk to them that they have never heard of bernie. this is a fantastic opportunity where you get to get people to realize there are options out there and i think that is important. >> i know you are doing the same thing with your relatives cht you are trying to conjoel on your relatives to your side. thanks so much for sharing where you all are. we will be watching over the next 24 hours. thanks so much for being with us. thanks to all of you for watching us. time now for "newsroom" with
