win. >> some may have doubted us but we never doubted each other. >> we have a corrupt campaign finance system. >> we aren't a single issue country. >> now it is on to super tuesday. >> the fight goes on. the future that we want is within our grasp. >> donald trump the billionaire real estate magnet will win the south carolina republican primary. >> does this now represent the defeat of skepticism. >> it looks like donald trump is on his way to winning. >> the people in iowa and new hampshire and south carolina have spoken so tonight i am suspending my campaign. >> this has been the writing on the wall for some time. >> the death of a dynasty in a way. >> there are only six now and i'm still one of them. >> it is down to the final four. >> this has become a three person race and we will win the nomination. >> as people drop out i'm going to get a lot of o those votes also. >> i'm not going anywhere. >> this country is now ready for a new generation of conservatives to guide us into the 21st century.

>> the washington cartel in full terror that the conservative grass roots are rising up. >> we won. we won. of course plenty to cheer about for trump supporters after winning the south carolina primary with 32.5% of the vote, trump is now the unrivalled front runner among the republican candidates. marco rubio edging out second place over ted cruz. >> well for the democrat, a crucial win for hillary clinton, blunting that rise of bernie sanders, a so called nevada firewall held up, helping to ease anxiety among her supporters. more in a moment but we're going to start with donald trump's commanding victory in south carolina. and the now shrinking republican field. cnn's senior political reporter manu raju joins us from south carolina. the trump campaign must be

motivated ae but move to the south on march 1st. >> a very encouraging victory here. this is ha man who has never run for office before. and taking two of the first three primary states is such a resounding manner really gives him a head of steam into nevada where he's a heavy favorite to win the caucuses there on tuesday ahead of the march 1st super tuesday states and a lot of southern states in that march 1st primary. what was very encouraging for the trump campaign was how well we did in a state that has dominated by evangelical voters. his main rival in the state ted cruz had aggressively courted those voters and really at one point was seen as the possible -- seen as possible favorite in this state. but donald trump did incredibly well with those voters all across south carolina. and when he addressed supporters he did not hold back his excitement. >> i love you all. again, south carolina we will never forget you. we will never forget you.

we will never ever forget south carolina. we will never forget our great volunteers. we love our volunteers. we'll never forget all of the people that have helped us so much. my family. and folks, let's go -- let's have a big win in nevada. let's have a big win at the sec. let's put this thing away. >> now the other big storyline of the night was marco rubio. the florida senator who really outperformed expectations. ended up in second place when polls had him showing about a third place finish here. after rubio's really underwhelming performance in new hampshire he came out of here with a head of steam, getting support from the party establishment. and aboard his campaign plane last night he made very clear he's going to sharpen the contrast with donald trump. here is a little about what he had to say. >> i think donald now that the

race has narrowed needs to step up and outline foreign policy. and it can't be that he won't name names. presidents have to be uniter, people that are willing to serve all the country, all american, even people that don't support you. so now that the race is going to be narrower, i think we'll have a chance to see those difference there is a respectful way. >> perhaps the most encouraging news of the night for marco rubio was the fact that jeb bush dropped out of the race. of course marco rubio has been competing very aggressively for the same type of supporters and for the donors in that bush network. in addition, bush being out of the race means that millions of of attack ads that have been launched by jeb bush's super pac will no longer be on the air. that will have a big impact on marco rubio going forward who said this is a threeman race but one person he has to still look out for is john kasich who is's

competing for that establishment lane and moderate voters. and marco rubio also plans to sharpen the contrast with john kasich as well. lots of storylines outs of south carolina. we'll see how it place out in the coming days. >> looking ahead to the next debate right before super tuesday. thank you so much. of course that debate here on cnn. >> on the democratic side now a big win in nevada for hillary clinton. propped up by the support of minority voters and casino workers. she defeated senator bernie sanders. take a listen. >> i am so, so thrilled and so grateful to all of my supporters out there. some may have doubted us, but we never doubted each other. >> clinton is already moving forward, attending an event in houston late last night as she looks forward to south carolina

primary next week in which she is already the crowd's favorite. cnn's senior correspondent brianna keilar, joining me now live from houston. a great night for hillary. this was also a crucial win for her. >> yeah this is so important ama aamara. they said this is the best day of the campaign since hillary clinton declared hish candidacy back in april. and even without a win in nevada there was a clearer path to the nomination for hillary clinton then bernie sanders. so with this win in nevada which had sizable minority groups, african americans, and hispanics. but still, you know, these were not giant percentages of the overall democratic electorate. the fact that she was still able to clinch a win they feel so

positive about. and then you saw her move almost immediately here to houston where she spoke at a historically black college last night. a very excited crowd, especially for one that had to wait four hours for her. this is where they feel like her strength is going into south carolina and other states to vote on march 1st. >> where does bernie sanders go here? appealing to non white voters and clearly clinton has the upper hand in south carolina with the black vote and also the super tuesday states. >> she certainly does. and i think what we'll see amara is he's going to continue to focus on african american voters. he's going to continue to focus on hispanic voters. the question is, is he really going to be able to make up that gap in support between what hillary clinton has and what he has. we're a week from south carolina. a week and change from march 1st and then other key states march 15th. so this called all move very quickly here in the next few

months but he's obviously moving forward towards south carolina, looking to pick up some support there. really one of the issues though for him was that he was banking on a win in nevada so he could say look, i have two. she only has one. bracing for a defeat in south carolina which seems almost imminent here and then he was going to try to pick up some delegates but probably hillary clinton would pick up more for super tuesday. so you can see this puts a little bit of a dent in some of the math his campaign was banking on. >> brianna keilar, great having you. thanks so much for that. and at 9:00 a.m. eastern, a special state of the union today at 9:00 a.m. eastern only on cnn. >> there are so many subplots after last night's big win from donald trump and hillary clinton. let's try to answer some questions here. with back-to-back wins now.

trump. a lot of people thought it was going to be even bigger than that. i think this what you see now is this is a threeman race and it is going to be-man race and it is going to be the three. and in houston on the debate stage, the longer that this is a large race the better for donald trump because it is obvious that his supporters are solidified behind him. there are not going anywhere. when he joked about being able to shoot a man in the street and people would still support him, his supporters would not leave him. i think thoos pretty obvious. that his supporters are solid and the rest of the field, as long as it is large he's going to continue to win states and that is why when you see jeb bush drop out, a lot of people are saying ben carson should absolutely drop out. he says he's stilling in and it long as they are in it, it helps donald trump. >> arkansas and alabama and oklahoma and tennessee. all states that have large

portions of evangelical voters. all states that according to at least the surveys and anecdotal information are strong strongholds i guess i should say. how much does this new hampshire paired with the south carolina win put him cloers to the nomination? >> it is a huge pairing was a in addition to all the southern states those are stronghold, tea party leaning states. you also have the virginias and the massachusetts. you are putting all of these guys on high alert because you can compete in all of those states. you are going to force someone like rubio to take a hard look

at which states he should even consider competing in. a lot of the states have 20% thresholds so if you don't get above 20% of the vote you walk away with nothing. because donald trump competes so well in both demographics cruz and rubio have to make strategic decisions. >> marco rubio, important second place last night but he's only one contest removed from that poor performance in new hampshire. is the establishment now more confident? are you expecting to see them now line up behind him? >> i don't. and i think that is because people don't know where they are going to go moving forward. i think what you are going to see the establishment start to do now is really try to apply pressure to kasich and the ben carson to say it is time to get out. there is not a viable path for you to the white house. i talked to one establishment

republican yesterday who said at this point you have to be able to explain to me why you should stay in. and if you cannot give me math that shows you a viable candidate then the only thing left is that you are doing this for your own personal eego. you should release your supporters and donors once you realize the math doesn't work. that's what jeb bush did last nigh. he had a lot of money. she spent a lot of money. he could have kept going. he realized the math doesn't make sense and he got out. same thing huckabee did after iowa. she was a staitsman for doing that and is that is what you are going to see the establishment do. this needs to be a three-man race right now not a five person. >> and let's listen to a part of jeb bush's speech last night and then we'll talk. >> the people of iowa and new hampshire and south carolina have spoken and i really respect their decision. so tonight i am suspending my

campaign. >> no. >> yeah yeah. [ inaudible ] thank you. [ cheers and applause ] >> governr bush who's super pack has a hundred million has now moved to the also ran last in -- also ran list in this primary. >> in that establishment lane if you want a viable candidate who can pose is a threat to donald trump you need every single bit of establishment support behind rubio. the jeb bush support will be divided between kasich and rubio. you will even have some folks tipping off and going to donald trump and maybe even ted cruz. but if jeb bush came out and solidly endorsed marco rubio and then you had that pressure on kasich and all of that support could be as tightly consolidated behind rubio as possible, you all of a sudden have a very competitive race.

but i would make the argument that i do think it is an outsider's election. 67 people who were very angry at the federal government consolidated behind cruz and trump. even with jeb bush endorsing someone like rubio it might be tough because i just think it is an outsider year. >> we've got to wrap it there because we've got governor pataki coming up. you are back next hour. we'll talk about that endorsement potentially. how much it helps and who likely will get it. thanks both. less than 15 minutes we'll be joined by george pataki. he'll talk to us about why he's backing marco rubio for the nomination and how he thinks the florida senator can beet donald trump after this south carolina win. >> the race for the gop nomination becoming more competitive as we are down to five republican candidates now and all five will be on one stage debating this thursday

let's go toni -- to michigan now. >> jason dalton is expected to be charged with open murder. accused of killing at least seven in a rampage last night, including a child. police are calling it a worst case scenario because it seems he chose his victims randomly. what can you tell us about this ryan? apparently this gunman want to three separate locations. >> three separate locations and we know we're going to have another news conference where they are going to give us more information about the case we know this started around 6:00. they pulled into a parking lot and just decided to aim his gun at a woman who was walking with

several children. she's in critical condition. then it took four hours before the next shooting. that was around 10:00. police say they did have a description after a car by that time. but that didn't stop him from showing up at a kia dealership and shooting two people, a father and son. then he moved on to a cracker barrel location where he shot five people there, killing several of the people in that parking lot. we talked to the undersheriff about the impact on the community. >> well i was born and raised in this town and i still live here. and this just shock this is community. you know we're not a naive community. we have our situations that all communities have. but to have somebody just drive around randomly gunning people down for no apparent reason, that just attacks the psyche of the community and any community for that matter.

>> you think about the impact of this. the idea that the suspect was just driving around, trying to figure out whether the motive is at this point. we're hoping the news conference that is going to happen that we'll be able to get more details. there is a scene at the suspect's house right now where they are going through his apartment. we've asked several questions about the apartment. whether or not he left any messages behind or booby traps but so far they are not sharing that information with us. the idea that someone would go from parking lot to parking lot and opening fire and shooting innocence people in front of children and shooting children you can understand why the community is shaken at this point. >> it is just horrific. keep us posted and of course we'll stay on top of that news conference in the next half hour or so. thanks so much. >> with jeb bush out of the race, can marco rubio win enough

bernie sanders proved he does have momentum last night. a month ago he was 25-30 points down below hillary clinton. she had a very good ground game, as bernie sanders. but her ground game really focused on rural areas which she neglected in 2008 if you recall when she won the popular vote but lost the caucus to barack obama. she invested heavily six months out, two months before bernie sanders and even though he really fought it to the end and it got very close that is really what's important here. is that in these states with

exception to south carolina, which we're fully aware of the situation there, he needs to come in very close or a win. she can't get away with losing big numbers the way she did in new hampshire. so the electoral moath could wok up to the convention in august. >> you talk about march 1st. we've got to get through south carolina. you say he's got the wind at his back. but it seems like -- he lost here. he's expected to lose in south carolina and then the contest heads south where there is a larger amount of african american voters then he's faced in iowa and new hampshire. seems like the winds he's facing are head winds. >> but look at the southwestern states. arizona, new mexico. these are states with high latino population. and if you saw the number s las

night he did very well with latinos. working class voters. young voters. minorities under 45 he's doing very well. i think the message that he needs to deliver to increase that african american support so he does keep that momentum is that he is an electable candidate. when you match him head to head with every republican candidate. he beats them. hillary clinton does not. and that is the message that she's sending out that she's the electable candidate but the reality is she's really not. and this is a tough fight here. >> hillary clinton as we saw in 2008 she became a better candidate as that primary went on. we're seeing now that although in the early contest she said it was mostly about i and me and my, yesterday she ended by saying -- and i jotted it down -- the future that we want is wp our grasp. so now a collective.ithin our g. so now a collective. is bernie sanders changing his strategy to become a better candidate? and how does he get those

minority voters that he has been unable to engage thus far? >> well i think that, you know, this is what primaries do to democrats. they argue at the issues, and they see whether the voters want and what they care about. and i did think that the speech sounded very sanders-like last night. but that's good. bernie probably needs to connect more with the african american community. i don't know if his message is really connecting to those communitys partly because those communities do respond to the surrogates. they respond to the endorsements. there is still a lot of machine politics playing out in african american communities that aren't playing out in latino communities. that aren't playing out in the working class communities anymore. so i think sanders probably needs more endorsements and

deliver his message and connect the dots so that minority communities understand that the economy is the crucial core issue of the campaign. and hillary clinton may not want to talk about the single issue but that is the root issue. and partly she doesn't want to talk about it because let's be real here. she's supported by wall street and who is driving this economy and driving it so that the wages stay down for working class voters? it's wall street. so i think he needs to connect the dots more. >> next hour we're going to have certainly bakari sellers who's cnn commentator and hillary clinton sporter talk about the contest in nevada. and democratic dotown hall is ts tuesday night. that's news 8:00 p.m. eastern right here on cnn. the all important millennial vote, the democrats and republicans are all courting the

welcome back. traditionally they turn out in smaller numbers than their elders. but in a tight election their support can make all the difference. i'm talking about the millennial. in this election we've seen both parties eager to woo this increasingly powerful group of young voters. i'm joined by alex smith. the national chairman of the college republican national committee is a millennial herself. and i should mention she's not

endorsed a particular candidate. i want to first begin by asking about what the presidential candidates have to do to attract young voters. there was an op ed piece on cnn.com by julian zellezer and puts it that the political leaders are not talking about issues that matter for this generation. for many mill ebls the kind of social and culturally issues that have so animated american politics since the 1980s just don't resonate. so what do voters want to hear? what are the issues that are important alex? >> thanks for having me on. absolutely at this point in time it is the economy for young voters and that is true of young voters across all demographic segments. this is a generation that's dealt with double digit growth and skyrocketing student loan

debt. they want to know they are going to have a job and help them pay back loans and bills. >> in some ways hillary clinton as well. what is it about his message when you look at his rallies you are seeing the youth turn out in droves to bernie sanders. and what can the republicans do to have that kind of appeal? >> what i'd say about bernie sanders message right now is that it's particularly attractive to young liberals who are tuned into the process. what we know about the general election is young independents are the most important group to reach and they are skeptical of bernie sanders policies. they are not sure that his kind of policies are the way to get us to a better future. what i will say about this generation is that this is a generation that is hurtic. as i mentioned before it is dealt with terrible economic consequences over the last eight years. when you are hurting and scared a message of free sounds great.

what they don't know is what it's going to cost down the line and i think that is where conservatives need to come in and show we have a better alternative. for a millennial everything that works, works because of the free market principles and open systems that empower us to make our own choices. we need to make that message clear. >> who do you think amongst the candidates are caring that message that the youth the young voters want to hear? >> i've heard everyone from donald trump to ted cruz to marco rubio talk about important issues to young people like student loans and creating jobs. so they are definitely talk about the issues. of course we'd like to get them more on to campuses to get them communicating that message correctly to our votes are but, you know, i think that they are talking to about it and particularly someone like a marco rubio is using the language of this century and this generation to describe the economic policies that i think are going to raze nate with young people. he talks about an uber economy, talks about the start up culture

which is appealing and relevant to voters. >> why do you think the marco rubios and donald trumps are not getting that turnout amongst the younger generation at their rallies? >> i think it is early in the process and millennial are simply just not tubd in at this point. but they are watching closely. and i will say if you go to a university or a campus you are going to get a turnout like that. we haven't seen ah our candidates go to a lot of those places yet. i think that millennial on the republican side are absolutely tuned in. they are following the process closely and i think that really shows through the youth exit polls and different states we've seen so far. we've seen young people support cruz in iowa, trump in new hampshire and cruz again in south carolina. and the others aren't too far behind in those polls either. really young people are considering many different candidates and really i think taking this decision seriously.

>> you mentioned exit polls. according to think progress.org, millennial could make up 37% of the eligible voting poll and our exit polling from yesterday in south carolina found about 10% of the turnout was young voters ages 17-29. what do you think about that turnout? are you happy with that? >> we'd like to see of course our younger republicans participate more. but what i will say about the general election is that we know young voters as a whole are going to decide the election. they decided it in 2012 and they are going to in 2016. they are going to make up 20% of the vote. so our party has to reach this generation. we have to be able to peel off some of the young voters if we ever hope to take back the white house and that is a bell i've been ringing the last three years. unfortunately i think our candidates are starting to see through watching the bernie sanders rally, watching what's going on on campuses today with the increasing symbols from tei

pull away. so this is where it gets interesting as you go forward. the map. so many states voting at once. cruz has a decent amount of money. kasich doesn't have that much money. donald trump has celebrity, 1 hundred percent name id and money if he wants to spend it. so this is where it gets interesting. you assume trump is in the lead just about everywhere and the question is the other candidates have to pick and choose. if you are ted cruz you have to worry about home. >> super tuesday. about 11 or 12 contests a quarter of all the delegates are awarded on super tuesday, march 1st. that is a huge prize. >> a big prize and this is a hypothetical. we're assigning the states to trump. on 35-20-20. by the end of march, 50% of the delegates will be decided. so he could pull out a stretch. and even if you took a few states away.
