every last vote and so far clinton is leading by a wide margin. she spent most of the week campaigning hard, of course. this afternoon she's in alabama before heading back to south carolina for the watch party tonight. after a concert and rally last night, bernie sanders looking ahead to campaigning in texas and minnesota today. cnn correspondent jeff zelledy following their campaigns. jeff. >> reporter: they're certainly not counting on a win. he's been across the country in illinois, minnesota. he's going to spend tonight in minnesota as well. looking ahead to those super tuesday contests next week. but it gave him a chance to reach out to a more diverse part of his democratic electorate. he did not spend as much time here as some of his advisers

would have hoped he would. he notice thad to keep going in this contest he needs to do well. we'll see if he does well here, but south carolina is feeling so different than it did eight years ago when it was hillary clinton outside the state not remaining when barack obama won this contest. bernie sanders looking beyond south carolina for the next wave of races next week. victor? >> jeff, thank you so much. hillary clinton is expected to win here in south carolina. she's hoping it's a decisive win, large margin. we've been on the ground in south carolina and i've been around speaking with voters in columbia to find out who they plan to vote for and why. watch. if you've chosen a candidate for the primary tomorrow, who's that candidate? >> i'm voting for hillary clinton. >> tell me why. >> all right. i think if she says she can get things done, she has experience on a lot of different levels.

>> experience, progressive valuesing and foreign policy experience. >> are you leaning in a direction? >> yes. >> toward him. >> hillary. >> why? >> i just like her. i think she's the best person for the office. she can walk right in and take over. she's used to everything. >> i don't have no choice. >> why? >> she's helping with the black issues. >> i feel like in this moment, it's bernie's time. i love what he says about the prison reform and reforming our economy and i honestly believe that hillary did not speak adamantly about black lives matter issues until bernie brought it into the forefront. >> i think she represents -- wants to represent all americans, and she has been working since a young adult for

minority minorities, for women, for the rights of unborn children, and i think she would be fair and have some wisdom because of her experience. >> hillary, you know what i'm saying, she seems like she basically had obama's back, you know what i'm saying. that was good enough for me. when you've got his back, i've got yours. >> let's bring in a hillary clinton supporter and a bernie sanders supporter. >> reporter: i want everyone to know that we spoke to people at random and those are the people that spoke and those are the answers we got. let's start with the final number tonight. hillary clinton is expected to win. how important is the margin? >> i think she's going to do

very, very well. the margin is important, but we're seeing it across the country. we've seen it in florida, across the polls. as a matter of fact, i think we've seen every one of those people the past couple of days. no question about it. >> bernie sanders, he wants the margin to be as narrow as possible. how important is that? >> it's important but only to a certain degree. there's only one candidate that has to win south carolina and that's not bernie sanders. south carolina is about closing the gap. i think he will do that. >> can he get within 10 or 15? >> i would like to see him get within 10 or 15. >> let me stay with you and voter turnout and bernie sanders. bernie sanders struggling to make inroads into the black community. a large portion is

african-american here. why is he struggling here, and if he continues to struggle here, will he continue to strug snl. >> i won't say he's necessarily quote/unquote struggling. i think he's done his part in the clinton recognition. not many have met people from vermont down here. what you've seen is over time the more people have gotten to know bernie sanders and the more he's gotten out his message, the more he's turning in. there are a lot of undecided voters in this state. i think that is what this race is going to hinge on here in south carolina. >> you know what i heard last week when i was here for the republican primary is so many people make up their mind when they get into the booth. >> i'm sure. >> they take a moment then. >> we've heard from senator sanders and now "the new york times" to call for the release of the transcripts of those speeches to wall street. let's put up a portion of those -- "the new york times" op-ed.

public interest in these speeches is legitimate and it's the public not the candidate who decides how much disclosure is enough. by stonewalling on these transcripts police clinton makes the decision and. is all this damaging her credibility? i mean you know she has a trustworthy problem. if there's nothing there, why release them? >> this is absolutely rid lick does. they planted three false stories about hillary clinton that she was under investigation, not true. front pack, that her personal server was illegal. not true. she was doing favors from the state department. not true. why doesn't "the new york times" go to donald trump and say release all your transcripts. senator sanders, why don't you

release all the papers when you were out there on the yacht and talking about wall street. it's also amazing, victor. it's a double standard. she's been in the public office, public life for 40 years. can you imagine releasing transcripts as simple as they are. you're going to read i went to the bank one day and made a deposit. they're going take that and say -- >> let me hear from justin. justin, your thoughts on these transcripts. >> well, you know, here's the thing. when you're running to be president and you're running to lead the citizens of this country, you know, if people have concerns, i don't see any harm in actually addressing t m them, you know. people look at bernie sanders and 100% of them said bernie sanders is honest and

trustworthy. one of the concerns they have about hillary clinton is which version of hillary clinton are we going to get? the new version, the 1990s version, the one before bernie sanders started to pick up speed or the post bernie sanders has support versus hillary clinton. you know, if there's no harm, no foul there, i don't see a problem releasing them, but that's going to be her decision. >> let's get your response on the robert reich, bill clinton's former labor secretary overnight endorsed hillary clinton's campaign. i think that's far too small for the screen. he said he'll support hillary clinton if she's nominated but he believes, and i'm paraphrasing here, that bernie sanders is the candidate he's going to support and he's the democratic supporter for this cyc cycle. that has to be a blow for the

clintons. >> she's gotten so many endorsements. >> but this is a cabinet member. >> she's gotten the endorsement of so many cabinet members. you know what i think the media should do? i think the media should look at donald trump, they should look at bernie sanders, ask them to release various papers. go to marco rubio and ask him to release his papers. oh, i forgot. he's never had a job. >> this is a clinton cabinet mem who s member. >> everyone has their opinion. i think bernie sanders has done a great job of growing the narrative and bringing more people under the tent. i think the clinton people believe that in the next two or three months this gap is going to show that secretary clinton is going to win the nomination. >> thank you both.

again and likely to step up the personal attacks that started on thursday night at the debate and then carried through friday. sara murray is following that gop infight. >> reporter: two of the biggest brashest personalities in the republican party are teaming up. >> i said let's keep it as a secret for the people in texas. let's do it. >> reporter: donald trump snapping up his most prominent endorsement yet, new jersey governor chris christie. >> he's rewriting the play book of american politics. >> reporter: and trying to shift the momentum back in his corner. >> friends do not let friends vote for con artists. >> reporter: rubio is ratcheting his attacks on the billionaire's business record, even mocking trump's twitter habit. >> how does this guy misspell not one tweet, two tweets so badly.

i've reached one of two conclusions. that's how they spell those words at wharton where he went or he must have hired his own foreign worker to do those tweets. last night during one of the breaks, two of the breaks, whemt backstage. he was having a meltdown. first he had this little make junk thing applying makeup around his moustache. then he asked for a full length mirror. i don't know why. maybe to make sure his pants weren't wet. i don't know. >> but trump and christie were ready, banding together trying to take down a mutual foe. >> it's rubio. >> reporter: trump taking aim at his performance. >> here's a guy. you had to see him backstage. he was putting on makeup with a

trowel. honestly i thought he was going to die, rubio. he was so scared like a little frightened puppy. >> reporter: and even his appearance. >> i will not say that he was trying to cover up his ears. i will not say that. >> reporter: with christie piling on. >> do we need a united states senator for florida who doesn't show up for work? >> reporter: rubio brushed off the christie news. >> donald probably needed a lifeline and he called in chris christie. i appreciate that. i have my own. >> donald trump is adopting the rhetoric of a populist. donald trump like hillary clinton is a rich new york liberal. >> reporter: but for now, rubio is trump's top foil. >> rubio's a baby but a guy like

that is tougher. >> it is certainly getting nastier. as donald trump goes to sweep his supporters, he eek talk about the sitting govern nors. we saw chris christie and now maine's paul lepage. kayleigh mack anyny. i want to start with you. we know they helped with them about his conservative bona f e fides. it's not like donald trump needs an attack dog. trump does the attacking himself. >> sure. he brings a lot. normally i'm skeptical of endorsements. but with chris christie, this is someone who stood beside donald trump on a debate stage, this is someone who donald trump sparred with and got many disagreements

with, but aside from all of that chris christie said of all the people standing on the stage says, this is the guy who can do it. i think it's because it's his colleague and equal. it shapes his endorsements where he has palin and falwell. it helps to shore up states like massachusetts or virginia, states that probably don't need to be shored up because donald trump is ahead by 20 points but it helps to bring in a different constituency. really, the two elements we're seeing, the establishment on the one hand, the chris christies of the world and the tea party. it brings the two together. it's an important endorsement. >> what's in it for christie? >> that's a good question. i think christie looked at donald trump and said this is a guy who's most like me. he's someone with consecutive

experience. >> does he look at donald trump and see a possible vp slot for himself? >> i think that's probably on everyone's mind but i think donald trump made clear he doesn't know who is going to be vp. christie would to love be a vice president. he would be a very good vice president. we saw his name being floated around with the romney campaign. it's probably on his radar and he'd be a great vp. >> well, chris christie -- you spoke about disagreements moments ago. you once said trump was dead wrong on the ban for the u.s. he said it was the wrong temperntempe tempern'tmetempe temperament for a president. he said that comes from someone with no experience and doesn't know what they're talking about. there are contradictory statements here. i wonder if that trumps donald trump's political correctful, is

that the mantra of his campaign. >> you know, it is interesting. they did have that disagreement, that's exactly right. terrorism is obviously on the forefront and that's a big issue and a disagreement. but i think chris christie when he looked across the stage he said, these are senators but this is someone like me and he ran something. he ran a $10 million brand, he's someone who is ooh hired, made important decisions like chris christie who's written budgets and kept a state safe. i think at the end of the day what mattered most was one executive matter over policy. >> let me ask about governor paul lepage of maine. he's certainly offered some critical comments. i want to read one for you here. he said there were drug dealers coming into maine and impersonating, quote, white women, and said he would bring back the guillotine and public

executions. i mean "the new york times" is calling what we're seeing a bully bromance. is there for trump supporter, a point at which this all goes too far? >> well, that comment certainly goes too far. i think that's unacceptable rhetoric and i do think there's a risk on the campaign trail to push the rhetoric a bit too far. you know, for instarngs it's a little bit different in terms of rhetoric. we're not talking about a guillotine in this instance but some of the sparring we've seen between rubio and trump. a discourse has ratcheting up that i don't think is productive to the political process. but when you have a race for the presidency and you have five people in it, you're going to hear some pretty bad rhetoric. i certainly do not condone those comments from the governor. that's definitely out of line. >> well, talk about ramped up rhetoric, we heard some last night comparing donald trump to

hitler. watch a portion of this. >> he says he's going to bring back america to what it was. that's crazy. never, never before america, the united states was so big, so strong, so powerful, so successful as it is today. he's going to take that nation back to the old days of politics, war, and everything. he remembers me of hitler. that's the way he started speaking. >> reminds him of hitler. kayleigh, what's your response? >> that is completely, completely out of line and outrageous that he would say something like that. if you're going to compare someone to a dictator who annihilated jews, tried to wipe out a race in europe, you need to be very good on your facts

and have evidence. there's no way that donald trump is anywhere close to it. to use that hyperbole, that's very concerning coming from a former president. i don't think there's a place to compare a modern democratic leader to a dictator who performed genocide on a group of people. i really think that's a bridge that's gone too far. >> we certainly should expect that donald trump should respond as he rallies with his supporters today. kayleigh mcaneney, thanks so much. >> thanks, victor. we want to talk about yoko ohno. she's in the hospital this morning. also, more ted companies are coming to apple's defense and it's clashed with the fbi. what they say could be at stake

a big day for democrats here leading into super tuesday. polls open in south carolina in fewer than 30 minutes. here's a look with brianna keilar with how the race is heating up. >> reporter: victor, hillary clinton on a push the day before this all important primary first in the south, including at an appearance at south carolina state university, the only

historically black university, that she's going to rebuild the party here in the state. >> i'm going to break every bare yore that stands in the way of any american from getting ahead and staying ahead because i know america can't live up to its potential unless every person in our country has a chance to live up to his or hers. >> reporter: despite a couple of interruptions from supporters of the black leasives matter, hill clinton is hoping and planning to win by a large margin. the idea being that this will give her some momentum going into super tuesday where a number of other southern states come into play. victor? >> all right. brianna keilar for us. brianna, thank you so much. let's talk about the issue of

gun control. hillary clinton is trying to continue to contrast her views against that of bernie sanders. congresswoman gabby giffords, you remember she was shot in the head in 2011. here's a portion of the ad. >> i'm fed up. we have a gun violence problem. so i'm voting for hillary clinton. she's tough. she will stand up to the gun lobby. she will fight to make our families safer. it matters. >> i'm hillary clinton, and i approve this message. >> her recovery has been amazing. even with these high-profile endorsements, hillary clinton is still being hit on several funds. she's expecting her last batch

of state department e-mails will be released on monday and now the calls are growing louder to release the transcripts of the speeches. listen to what south carolina voters told me. "the new york times" and senator sanders called for her to release the transcripts. do you think she should? >> i think she should, but i don't think it's that big a deal. it's certainly not a showstopper for me. >> i hope she does that. i think that's part of being transparent. >> i really don't care if she releases them or not. i think it's up to her. >> she should. >> why? >> yes. >> transparency and also if she's got nothing to hide, then release the transcripts. >> i'm joined now by cnn political contributor errol

loui louis. even her supporters want to see it happen. >> i agree that it's not that big of a deal but that's my personal opinion. politically i don't know if it's going to take root. that's the reality of it. one of the speeches where we know she did say at these corporate events, you know, it's really kind of a lot of cheerleadi cheerleading. if the point is to have her cozy up to hillary clinton and stick money in her pocket. that's a financial transaction. it's not going tell you something you didn't know. it's not that she's going go before goldman sachs or some other group and say all kinds of things that are 180 degrees opposite of what she said in public. i don't think we're going the find that. i think she's comfortable with having serve odden the board of walmart and fighting for working

people and being part of the corporate elite that in many ways has damaged the prospects for those working people. i mean that's just who she is. if people didn't know that before now, i don't think a transcript is going to reveal anything for them. >> let's talk about the strategy from bernie sanders now calling for her to release the transcripts of speeches of groups supporting fracking as it goes down to this virptal angle as well. is this strategy working for him? >> you know, it works for bernie sanders with some of his core constituents, people who are simply uncomfortable with any money in politics. if you don't leak the idea that there are corporations who have influence and there are corporate executives who make donations and that there are lobbyists who actually try to influence public policy and that all of those kinds of very powerful and influential sectors are in and around the clinton

campaign, if you're not happy about that, then, yeah, there will also be one more transcript you want to see and one more criticism you want to lob. if you're not in that group and i don't think it's the majority going to the polls. that's what the outcome so far seems to suggest, then you're gotten to try to figure out what you can live with with hillary clinton. you know, so she's -- she came -- for fracking, for example that you raise. she came to essentially the same position as bernie sanders but she came late. that's the issue she's trying to run on. it's a very difficult case to make. yeah, she's saying the right thing, but we can't be sure but she didn't say it as early as she should have. >> all right. errol louis joining us this morning. we're minutes way from the opening of the polls in south carolina as the democrats choose their nominee here. thank you so much, errol. we'll be talking to the democratic chair jamie harrison in just a moment.

agree. over the next few days, amazon, google, facebook all expected to file letters in support of apple. laurie segall has the latest. >> hey, christi. they're forcing it to help the fbi unlock the iphone of one of the san bernardino shooters. they claim it violates the company's first and fifth amendment rights. i spoke with ted olson, an attorney representing apple. he said if apple looses the fight the fbi's demands would mount. i asked him, what about national security? what happens in the future when the fbi is sitting on the phone of a known terrorist, there's an impending threat, and no one can get in. listen to what he said. >> we have to do everything to defeat terrorists, and defeat and capture and punish people like osama bin laden and so forth, but we can't do it by

breaking our constitution. we have got to stop someplace. we can't break someone's back in order to get them to tell somebody where somebody else is. if they're saying there's a serious threat, throw out the constitution in order to prevent that threat, where do we draw the line. >> now, the government is expected to respond to appleby march 10th. a final hearing will held on march 22nd, and olson says they're prepared to take this case all the way to the supreme court. we'll keep you updated. christi? >> we appreciate it. thank you. alex wood is with us from london. he's a technology journalist and editor of tech news site "the memo." i want to touch on something that apple's attorney said. we have to do everything to defeat terrorists but we can't do it breaking our constitution. what is the true risk, alex, of apple assisting the fbi and what is the frisk they do not?

>> i think the true risk of them opening this up is this is not just a one-time thing. the second this happens, it's going -- [ inaudible ] what we're looking at here is a different issue. the second you -- hackers -- >> a precedent-setting moment. a pew study, a recent but study says 51% of americans say apple should hack the phone. you're in london. the uk is no stranger to terror, what are the conversations being had there about the government potentially forcing a company to work with them. >> you're absolutely right. i can sympathize with people understandably. i think a lot of people --

at that polling station in lexington. and, joe, good morning to you. i wonder what is voter turnout expected to look like? 2008 was a banner year for the democratic candidates. what can we expect this year? >> reporter: i giev tot tell you, victor, they're not expecting anything like 2008. they're not expecting anything, quite frankly, like the republican race just last weekend. so i wanted to give you an idea of the setup here. this is river bluff high school in lexington, south carolina. let's just walk through. we actually haven't seen a voter yet. voting begins at this hour across the state. authorities say turnout is not expected to be anything like, as you said, 2008, and it's a reflection of the race. the republican race has been very noisy, very earn jettic. the democrats have been much more civil. here's an idea. we've got a handful of poll workers and right across the way, we have three discreet polling stations and that's

about it. that's what authorities say they think they need. another reason why they're not expecting turnout to be that big is because hillary clinton is stiso ahead in the polls. that's a big problem for candidates because their voters can say i have other things to go. bernie sanders has been traveling around the country. he's out west, probably going to end up in minnesota today. hillary clinton is in alabama and expected to show up to south caroli carolina. south carolina is going to the polls today. >> breaking news last saturday for the republican primary. there were people who were already trickling in at 7:00. i wonder what possibly was the impact of having these primaries

on separate days. maybe some those independents who might have voted in the democratic primary were so excited by what happened or what was happening in the republican primary that they decided not to wait a week and vote in that one. >> right. absentee ballots, and there have been about 36,000 absentee ballots cast across the state, probably about one-tenth the authorities and democratic primaries are expecting. that's quite a number of absentee ballots, quite frankly, for south carolina. still not expecting the turnout here to exceed what happened in the republican primary here, victor. >> a good indicator of what the candidates expect will happen is where they are on the night of the returns and what we're expecting tonight, that hillary clinton will be here. bernie sanders will be outside of the state, still struggling to make the inroads into the minorities across the state and across the country. >> absolutely right.

and that's been the big challenge in this state. it's the statement that hillary clinton is trying to make in south carolina that once you get past iowa, once you get past new hampshire and the demographics of the voting electorate expand, she wants to make a statement that minority voters, african-american voters come to her. so this will be a big test of that as we go into super tues y tuesday. >> joe johns for us at the polling location in lexington, south carolina. thank you so much. of course, the race for the white house getting hotter on both sides as the remaining candidates look ahead to super tuesday. and really for many, they say a do-or-daikon test. here's the latest from the campaign trail. >> friends do not let friends vote for con artists. >> he was so scared like a little frightened puppy. >> the rowdy republican cnn debate spills onto the campaign trail and marco rubio comes out

making every effort to comply with this order. >> and bernie sanders hopes to gain some of the momentum lost after the setback in the november caucuses. sanders rallying in columbia and orangeburg at the historically black clackburg, university. you see a lot of the seats were empty. black voter polls as we say opened at the top of the hour. joining me now the chairman of the democratic south carolina party. jamie harrison. good morning. >> good morning. >> i want to start in orangeburg, many of the seats reportedly empty there. there's a small crowd there for bernie sanders. he's been working here and across the country to try to make inroads into minority communities. has he been successful? >> you know, think he's had some

trarkz wi traction with younger african-americans, but he has not had as much success with older african-americans, particularly in a place like orangeburg which is a very unique community, my hometown. orange burg has two historically black colleges but a senior african-american poll population as well. what i've seen, i went down to orangeburg and talked to some people. i saw the hillary clinton rally. they were next door to each other. at the hillary clinton rally there were a lot of older african-americans and at the bernie sanders rally i saw many more college students. so it's that kind of dichotomy that's played out there. >> some of these sanders supporters have criticized the clinton campaign specifically for what they call pandering to the african-american community. i imagine that's a difficult

balance because if you don't say anything, you're ignoring the community. and in some case use be called a panderer. >> i don't like this whole pandering language that's being used because both bernie sanders and hillary clinton have been talking to african-american voters and they should. african-american vote in the democratic party is probably the foundation for this party, the most loirt constituency within the democratic party so it's important that both of them talk to african-americans, talk to them about the issues that are important to them and i don't see what either of them have done thus far as being, quote/unquote pandering. >> let's talk about turnout today. >> yeah. >> i don't expect and i'm sure you don't expect that we'll see what we saw in 2008. >> no. >> what do you expect to see today? >> you know, in 2008, we had about a little over 500,000 voters. we broke records that year. if you take a look at 2004, it was about 292,000 voters. i anticipate being somewhere

there in the middle, probably in the 350,000 to 400,000 range. when i checked the absentee ballots for the contest earlier this week, we were at about 40,000 and that was eclipsing the number where we were in 2008. i still don't think, though, we'll have more voters than we had in 2008 because that was just a different type of race, different dynamics. this race started a lot slower with many -- with less candidates than in 2008. and so, you know, it's a different dynamic. i know people like to compare it to the republican contest, but, listen. there were about 17 republicans in south carolina all at once. if i threw a rock, i would hit a republican running for president. so, you know, you just can't compare it where we only had three at the height here in south carolina. so i think, you know, voters are very interested. they'll come out and vote. but, again, 2008 was a different time. >> let me ask you about the impact, having these primaries

on separate days in different weeks vchl you seen it because the republican race was a week ago? >> no. we had different days in 2008 as well and actually 2008, the democrats, we had 100,000 more than the republicans did. i mean one of the things that matt moore who's a republican chair, he and i get along very well. we try to get it on the same date, but we have to sit our rnc and dnc people down at the same time and say let's get oracle doors where they're the same. the prb is the rnc uses its third calendar and the dnc uses its forth. somebody has to slip. my thought is let's move south carolina up to third and let's go with that. >> are you seeing a drop in enthusiasm because the republicans have left and they're splitting it? >> no, not really. the number of interviews i've done haven't gone down. no, but, really, the voters are -- the voters are very

the polls are open in the democratic primary. they're about 15 minutes in. they close at 7:00 p.m. hillary clinton expected to win today, but, of course, question will be about the numbers inside the numbers. the vote among african-american voter here and the margin sets it up for super tuesday. choker, lightweight, those are a few of the insults and there are many flying between the gop front-runner donald trump and the man who wants to beat him, marco rubio. the two are taking their fight from the cnn debate stage to the campaign trail where the mud slinging shows no signs of letting up. this week attack ads are making that their goal like this one. charging the front-runner with profiting off undocumented immigrants. >> how much do we really know

about donald trump? a federal court ruled that trump's company hired illegal immigrants to help the construction process for trump tower. he even paid a million dollar fine. >> the "washington post" showed -- >> trump makes big money off illegal immigrants. can conservatives trust donald trump? >> marco rub row on thursday night's debate went after trump about the legal immigrants he employed to build trump tower in new york. he also went after him about trump university. watch this ad. >> i spent about $30,000 on trump university and basically all it did was ruin my credit and ruin my life. trump university promised everything from start to finish, their expertise, their knowledge, their input, their financi

have with your officials to attack not only marco rubio but saying he can't even do a credit card right and look how terrible he is at his finances because he had to take out a loan for something. he did the same exact thing for ted cruz saying he got a big loan from the wall street bank. now he says you can't see my tax returns because i've been audited. it's the first two years but now 11 or 12 years in a row? i don't think it's been 10 or 11 years in a row first off. there's obviously something in there he does not want people to see and i think that's connecting with voters from rubio and cruz going into super tuesday. they should have done this earlier. is it too little, too late? it will be interesting to see what the voters decide on this but there's a lot of trump supporters now that i talked to who are saying for the first time they're wavering a little bit because he seems to be doing the opposite of what he claims he was going to do, which was open, transparent, not be a

politician, and now he's playing politics with his own tax returns. >> jeff, what do you i have to say about that? why not release the tax returns the years that are not being audited now. >> well, those questions just came up this week. he was never asked this before. mitt romney is part of the political establishment. obviously it's what derailed his campaign, one of the many things he did wrong in his campaign four years ago and so now he's using the harry reid attack on donald trump it's not a harry reid attack. >> he's released his financials well before the deadline. you can go online right now and see explanations and detailed breakdowns of $10 billion in assets, and so i don't know what we're going to get by this anyway, but it's very possible as you said that we'll come out with this down the road when his routine audit is over, but no accountant in the world -- >> jeff, let me -- >> let me jump in here. "usa today" has reported that

the irs says there's no reason he can't release the tax returns tochl say he has to wait, that's personal choice, and if he's choosing to be trance parents, he can release those documents. >> not only can he release those documents, but the irs also said it would be virtually impossible for someone to be audited ten years in a row. i think the candidates should be asking of donald trump at least show us the paper that proves you were audited for the last decade because i think that's a lie. i don't think it happened. the irs implied that doesn't happen unless you're doing something on your taxes that's a red flag year after year after year. i don't believe him that he's been on for a decade straight and i would also say this. the there's something in there he doesn't want them to see. he very well could have invested in goldman sachs while criticizing ted cruz for getting a loan. he could have been investing in

companies that were exporting jobs out of america. remember, he's been tough saying i'm not buying certain products anymore that are going to make factories in mexico. we have no idea what he's invested in or where it's being invested. so you add all of this up and yet he attacks ted cruz for taking a single loan. it's out there and says it's not transparent. look at how he's in control. donald trump knows is an issue. he can stop it and make it all go away by being transparent. he's purposely choosing to hide something and i think there's something in there that connects him to liberal groups that he would be in serious trouble for supporting. >> got it. >> let me get you in here. i want to ask you a question. let me ask you about policy here because in thursday's debate, marco rubio asked for specifics about trump's health care plan and aside from talking about creating competition nationally, he said there was nothing else

there, what else do i need to explain. i would imagine at this point going in to super tuesday, this is the time to explain when are voters going to get the specifics behind those plans. >> well, the specifics are already online at donaldjtrump.com as well as debates at multiple times. i want to touch on what the other floel said. said he doesn't know what he's investing in and he's not trance parent. again, all of these are detailed. an income tax return is not a summation of assets. there's nothing in there that's going to show you a listing of all assets. that's put out. he's not hiding anything. what's funny, too, is -- >> if he's not -- >> they asked him the other night when are yours coming out -- >> you can't both -- >> ted cruz and marco rubio, they asked where are your tax

the margin. already stumping in super tuesday states today. senior washington correspondent joe johns is live at that station -- polling station in lexington, but statewide, what is the democratic party expecting to see, joe? >> reporter: i think the democratic party is expecting to see hillary clinton win in south carolina. the question, of course, is the margin. it's all really a question of expectations and whether bernie sanders can keep it reasonably close if he were to keep it within single digits here in south carolina. a lot of people would say that's almost a win for him. so keeping it close for bernie sanders, for hillary clinton, of course, she wants to see a blowout here, trying to make a statement that she can bring african-american voters, minorities, those in the demographics that are a little bit different from what we saw in iowa and new hampshire as we

move to the southern states, victor. >> and where will the candidates be tonight, joe? >> reporter: hillary clinton is trying to make the pivot to the super tuesday states and beyond while at the same time keeping an eye on south carolina. she's going to be in fairfield, alabama, today before coming back to columbia, south carolina, for what she hopes will be a victory party. bernie sanders will be farther out west, austin, texas, a couple events there. then he goes on to minnesota from that point. so busy schedules for both of these candidates. a lot of frequent flyer miles, victor. >> indeed. joe johns there for us in lexington. joe, thank you so much. now, as joe said, this could be another big day for hillary clinton. even with a win here in south carolina, she, of course, will continue to be hit on several fronts just as the last of her

state department e-mails are released. that's coming on monday, we're told. the calls are growing louder for her to release the transcripts of paid speeches to wall street banks. listen to what south carolina voters told me about those speeches. "the new york times" and senator sanders, they're both calling for secretary clinton to release her transcripts of the wall street speeches. do you think she should? >> i think she should, but i don't think it's that big a deal. personally that's not a showstopper for me. >> i hope she does that. i think that is part of being transparent. >> i really don't care if she releases them or not. i think it's up to her. >> she should. why? >> yes. >> transparency and also i -- if she's got nothing to hide, then release the transcripts. >> all right. so a split for those few voters. i want to bring in cnn political contributor errol louis.

errol, i wonder if there's this widespread presentation with the om om omnipresence of phones, et cetera, do they believe she would have said something in those speeches that would be detrimental to her campaign? >> reporter: you know, that's what i can't quite get over honestly, because this is somebody whees been in the public eye one way or the other. if you're talking about continue executives at a retreat, that's a very public speech. hillary clinton, her statements are measured and parsed, and she's been on so many sides of so many issues for so long, it seems hard for me to believe that there would be some explosive dynamite, some statement that she absolutely couldn't walk away from, couldn't claim that she was

misinterpreted on, and that's going to prosivide some fodder. think it's to shine a spotlight on the fact that she has, in fact, done a lot of business in a lot of different ways with different corporations that have donated to the clinton foundation or paid her personally. the case they're making or the larger point they're making, which i think is a good one, is that she is somewhat compromised. if you want somebody who's got some distance from the world of corporate leadership, hillary clinton is not your candidate. she's been very much in bed with them so to speak politically for many, many years. she says she can remain independent, but that's for the voters to judge. bernie sanders is shining a skeptical eye on all of that. >> and you talk about a larger narrative. of course, that is even part of the narrative of trustworthiness and being honest with voters, something that hillary clinton has acknowledged is still a question she's trying to answer. have you seen of late as we've now seen the vote in south carolina that she's making any

to continue to be their voice, hillary clinton speaks very loudly to those folks and her message is resinating. >> let me ask you about bernie sanders and his effort to make the roads to minority communities, especially the african american community. has he been successful? the expectation is he will trail by double digits maybe 20 or more points here. that obviously does not prove well for moving into other southern states, east coast states as the primary season continues. >> he always had questions, excuse me, he always had questions about the state of south carolina and coming into this state. we knew the clinton folks had us locked down and african americans rallies around her and guarded her and took care of her. we knew it would be an uphill challenge. what we're trying to do now, marginalize and losing south carolina does not mean he's losing this whole election. it means he's losing the state. matter of fact, we lost nevada

by five points where they thought he would lose by 20 points or 15 points. >> what do you expect the margin to be here? >> not quite sure. not as much as we want it to be but we're not quite sure what that margin will be soon. >> maria, let me come to you with what we learned overnight, bill clinton, former president, his former labor secretary endorsed bernie sanders saying if hillary clinton becomes the nominee, he'll support her of course, but he believes bernie sanders is the agent of change the country needs. has to be a blow to clinton folks. >> well, i'm sure they would have preferred for him to support hillary but at the end of the day it doesn't surprise me secretary rice supported bernie sanders. they are similar in terms of ideology. that doesn't mean hillary clinton is not going to continue to press on and focus on her message of progressive change on

skp ment and we need to start speaking the truth. this behavior from trump has been tolerated and the media ignored a lot of deficiencies in the candidacy and we can't allow our party to be hijacked by somebody that by the way on most issues has been all over the map. he is without a doubt the most liberal candidate running for president, and i understand republicans out there that are furious that in washington we haven't done the things as a party that we need to with barack obama in the white house. but we have to remember that it's been marco rubio that's been taking this fight to this administration and he's been taking the fight to the establishment. when he got elected in 2010, it was running against the establishment as one of the original tea party candidates. so set aside, you know, the frustrations that we have and think about who it is we really want to lead our party into the future. donald trump would rip our party apart by the seams. >> not true. >> kaley, let me come to you quickly about the tax returns

because we know that he won't release the tax returns he says because of an audit, not yet but the irs says an audit does not prevent someone from releasing the turns, the irs said it is rare for anyone to be audited for 12 years in a row as trump claims he has been. if he can't release the ones that are being audited presently, why can't he release other ones? when are we going to see these documents? it. >> is rare to be audited 12 times and what is going on in the ira and obama administration. ben carson said he was audited after he came out after obamacare. it is probably odd to be audited that many times -- >> is that a suggestion president obama is using the irs to go specifically after potential nominees? >> it's been done before. so i don't doubt that it could be done again.

to just bring it within single digits, it would be viewed by some as almost a win for him. now, as far as where the candidates are today, hillary clinton off to balabama and return to south carolina. bernie sanders on to texas and then minnesota. he was here yesterday in orangeburg, south carolina, at south carolina state university hammering away at some of the key messages, listen. >> i do not have a super pac. i do not raise millions of dollars from wall street or powerful special interest. there was a bill so-called welfare reform bill. and the thesis, the idea behind that is that poor people were ripping off the welfare systems. i vigorously opposed that legislation. secretary clinton supported that

continue to divide the vote? >> that's an interesting scenario. if only they have the ability to fine tune. this is really where the campaign turns into a flatout crazy brawl. it goes national on tuesday. on tuesday i'm sure donald trump would love to beat ted cruz in his home state because that will then sort of flip the switch and ted cruz is almost suggesting as much that it's critical in that there really might be some legitimate calls for him to drop out. ted cruz is said to have thousands and thousands of volunteers on the ground. if he can't win there, you have to ask questions where can he win. donald trump fending off this new surge between now and tuesday, politically speak, not

here in the state along with lieutenant governor dan patrick and former governor rick perry. ted cruz had a strong per fo fo in the debate and aggressively on the ground in these key states and we're doing well. we're going to win texas. marco rubio has a burning dumpster fire and he worried about. he still can't explain where he's going to win anywhere on super tuesday much less thereafter. i think we're in a very, very strong position and ted cruz is campaigning hard. >> donald trump paid your candidate a rare compliment, backhanded compliment but a compliment. i want you to watch this. >> i have had, you know, i've had a lot of difficulties with ted because he lies. i've dealt with much tougher. a guy like rubio is a baby but a guy like ted is tougher. he is tougher and smarter in all fairness, ted is actually

work with world leaders if you've got one now calling him hitler? >> i don't think so. i think vicente fox, it's remp henceble to cam pair the race to hitler, someone that committed genocide on an entire population. it's a horrid comparison to make of a democrat and republican, uncalled for. as for cooperating with world leaders, donald trump can do that and he's done that and built a $10 billion brand by cooperating with people around the world and i think you're seeing backlash because donald trump's main message is america first, america before free trade agreements. america before allowing illegal ill gra ingrants and it poses a threat to other nations and other interests. so it's america first and i think that's why you see backlash from world leaders. >> ron, there was a comment from lindsey graham, former opponent. we know south carolina senator. it was at the washington press
