the breaking news, a run away victory for hillary clinton in south carolina. she wins the democratic primary by a near lee 3 to 1 margin. that makes back to back wins for hillary clinton, making her the presidential frontrunner among the democrats, going into the crucial super tuesday contest. and bernie sanders is in minnesota and he plans to win quote many, many delegates on super tuesday. as the make or break super tuesday contest s draw near, marco rubio goes toe to toe with donald trump. ted cruz is piling on, desperately needing a win himself super tuesday. we want to welcome our viewers

in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer in the election room. hillary clinton has the momentum she wanted going into super tuesday. she did not target her democratic rival, bernie sanders, she went right after the republican frontrunner, donald trump and used his campaign slogan as a weapon. >> despite what you hear, we don't need make america great again. america has never stopped being great. [ applause ] but we do need to make america whole again. instead of building walls, we need to be tearing down barriers. [ applause ] we need to show by everything we do that we really are in this

together. >> bernie sanders reacted to the south carolina loss by basically saying you win some, you lose some. at a rally in the super tuesday state of minnesota, he said his campaign is not just about the election but about transforming america. >> you know what democracy is about, and i really do love democracy, is one person, one vote. you disagree with me, that's fine. you got a better idea than me, fight for it. that's a beautiful thing. >> let's go to anderson cooper. he's going to after hillary clinton a lot more aggressively tonight than she was going after him. >> that's certainly true. and he said about talking about a lot of -- about the importance in his campaign of talking about issues not being talked about by other politicians or by the media, kind of giving him a

rationale for carrying on no matter what the delegate count. >> i was struck. he said i'm trying issues. issues you don't hear in the evil corporate media and i think that's at the heart of his message and then he started smacking hillary around. she had to recalibrate and change and do things that there fla hard for her, like open up. he hammered her with all that stuff and lost. he's got to get back to what worked, which is more i'm raising issues no one else will talk about. >> bernie sanders, he says i'm having all these big rallies, even though people weren't covering them and i'm the one who can get this enthusiasm going. but when you look at actual turnout in south carolina. it's about 200,000 voters less

than 2008. >> those that are for him are enthusiastic, but he has not brought in the droves of new voters like barack obama has. >> it's a post barack obama reality that they're having to face and bernie sanders has talked about this revolution and it's been good to see him push hillary clinton but the numbers doents bear it out. when you look at the decrease turnout, you see maybe we're not a part of this revolution. i say that to also give bernie sanders credit. because he is talking to a vein of voters, young millennial voters who are energized about wall treat and wealth and inequality. and hillary clinton is going to have to come out strongly against that if she's go toing to piece together that union. >> and i think she's begun to. i think he missed a moment

tonight. hillary clinton had that moment of ministry for the whole country. his moment needed a ministry moment. this was a time to come from his soul and tell some stories about how he has personally overcome tough days like this and get outside of that. so, i think he missed a moment for ministry and there's a -- there's three wings of this party, the establishment ring, this populous ring but that third leg is the racial justice ring. the dreamers, the black lives matter movement and nobody can truly lead this party if they don't have that wing. hillary clinton can make a claim that she has that other leg and esh she's got to continue with the populous and she's got the whole party. >> the thing of he missed a moment is he is who he is. that's not who he is.

he's not going to have that ministry moment. >> i could have said the saying l same thing about hillary clinton. people said that's not who she i don't believe people can't change and i believe there's more jelly in the drawer. >> and he is who he is. the speech we heard is yes, he added a few barbs to hillary but the speech is the same he's given all tlouhroughout. he has completely remade the debate in many ways. people are responding -- >> i just don't accept this. people are always better -- there's something inside of them deeper than they actually know. i know bernie sanders. he has stories about the civil rights movement, he has personal

stories about his kids. he never says publicly, just like hillary clinton. he's got to start doing that. >> he didn't talk about women. he didn't talk about heresler our path. he talked about i've nrintroduc these issues. he didn't say don't give up, the dream will never die, whatever you want to call it. >> that was a concession speech. >> okay. it was. it was. but he didn't talk about that tonight and kind of inspire the truth. what he did say is that telling the truth to the american people is sometimes not pleasant. that's what he said tonight. so, he was less inspirational than you clearly wanted him to be and as a candidate, i think he needed to be a little more energetic about the road ahead.

>> i still think he has a problem connecting one on one with people. he's very expansive. what he doesn't do, even if he has a bernie sanders town hall, it's bernie sanders giving an hour long speech. it's not bernie sanders taking questions and leaving. that would make him a better candidate. that would allow him to get up to the podium and tell people stories in very personal terms. >> he loves people, he just doesn't like interacting with them that much. >> oh, that's how i feel. >> you're revealing yourself. >> one thing i did hear that was a little different. bernie sanders likes to have one target audience, that is the middle clas. today he made sure to mention the african american community, young people, hispanic community, he's playing the obama and now hillary game plan of dividing the electorate and

marketing messages to these groups and maybe that's him recognizing that his one message, economic inequality, needs to be targeted if it's going to compete with hers. >> it's troublesome because he's doing it in minnesota. i'm not a candidate, i only try to listen to my advisoradvisors. >> maybe why you lost. >> wow. >> good night, everybody. thanks. >> i love my consultants. what i'll say is if i was advising bernie sanders, i would say we're going to philadelphia, mississippi, or little rock, arkansas and i'm going to get you to tell your story about being arrested, being chained to a black woman, deseg reigating housing in chicago. we're not going to go down here

and talk about income and equality. >> i said look i want to take you back to when you were 20 years old, what brought this white kid from brooklyn to do this, he wouldn't go down the road. >> it's not what he does. and when you look at the line up coming up, he's going to make great progress between now and tuesday. he was in minnesota for a reason. he was talking to the whole country and so he made the references he did but his basic message and target hasn't changed. >> the race isn't over. there's a long way to go. >> if i was a pumba -- >> everybody wants to be a strategist. >> senior democratic strategist.

but i heard him say she was paid $225,000 for a speech. and i'm like some republican is going to be calling for her to release the transcripts and the more he does, the more it will become part of the republican conversation. and they don't want this fight to continue on those terms because it may get more and more rough. we don't know. >> so far this has been tame. >> compared -- of course. >> there is another party in ameri america. they didn't say she pees in her pants suit. that's marco rubio. they're roller derby. they're self imulation and bernie's like you gave speeches and we have a hissy fit. >> wow. >> the difference in tone between democratic party and republican party -- >> the gap between the

coverage. the republicans are already charging very hard towards super tuesday and the nasty brawl between the frontrunner and marco rubio erupted in full fury and ted cruz is jumping in as well. >> i never saw a human being sweat like this guy. and i said there's something wrong. what's going on? and he was pouring. it was like he just gauts out of a swimming pool with his suit on p. a and he made the obama statement and made it once, and twice and i said that's strange and then a third, and fourth and fifth time. i was standing here like this. i thought he was going to pass out. and it was a bad performance and he's a choke artist. >> donald trump will not win by the way. the press is treating him like kid gloves.

if you watch on tv, they're like he's unstoppable force. they want him to be the nominee because the it day after he gets the nomination, which is not going to happen, but the day after he gets the nomination, they will tear him apart. >> this is a man who prides himself on not getting scared of anything, so why is he scared about handing over his tax returns? mitt romney said he thought there was a bomb shell. maybe it's hat donald's not as rich as he says he is. if you haven't heard, he's rich, if you haven't heard, he'll tell you pretty quickly. >> and the republicans side of this. hillary did amazingly well in south carolina but the level of rhetoric is really inhtensifyin on the other side. >> the democrats on the panel were saying there is an

incredibly different tone between the democrats and the republican republicans. they are right about that. it's kind of amazing what we're hearing and not just from donald trump. we're used to hearing colorful language and kaumncommentary fr him. and listen to another thing he said oen the campaign trail that you never even imagine he would say just a few days ago. >> senator, what's your favorite insult that you've read today about donald trump? >> well, we'll take one at a time. the one that was funny was the one about makeup. this guy has literally one of the worst spray tanz i've ever seen. a lot of people color their face but this guy's spray tan is almost distracting and you're looking at it it's hard. it's a bad, bad spray tan.

so, a guy that has a spray tan like that, can't be attacking people for wearing a little bit of makeup on the stage. >> marco rubio, the expert in the spray tans. >> he got a little dig in the media there. i'm surprised about how much fun marco rubio looks like he's having delivering these attacks. it seems sort of counter to what he's been presenting all along but he's relishing this moment. and you're right, it did start our debate. that was a drastic turning point in the campaign. the desperation of the moment for candidates not named trump was so clear and parent on the stage and they have not given up -- i mean, relentlessly continuing to try to take him down and you're right, this is marco rubio taking a page out of the trump play book. >> i mean you saw today or yesterday he sat on the stage

and just read donald trump's tweets and making fun of the fact that there were a lot of misspellings and so forth. that's the kind of thing donald trump does. >> and it all started -- the new chapter at our republican presidential debate at the bottom of the hour, we're going to have an encore presentation, even if our viewers may have seen it, they might want to watch it again. historic debate indeed. and this coming tuesday, super tuesday, is going to be critical. >> and the desperate tone is because they understand. 82 to 17, 16, and 6. it's very early. but, wolf, if trump runs the board, he would pull way out to here. let's say for the sake of argument, ted cruz wins at home,

marco rubio gets third and kasich fourth, ben carson would be fifth obviously. dondald trump's ahead everywher else on super tuesday. cruz is pushing in oklahoma and georgia but if it goes right now and donald trump wins the rest of the states, he'd start to open a delegate league. you have the home state contest here. govern kasich in ohio, senator rubio there. but right now trump is ahead. i want to give you a scenario now. i'm going to make it marco rubio. if we get down to trump versus one. but watch the numbers. watch this play out. if the other candidate, thisbying mathisby being marco rubio, everybody gets out and it's a two man race

and if rubio won everything after that, he would pass trump but thought clinch by the convention. so, the only way. if rubio won florida. if he could come back and win his home state, if rubio won his home state and then ran the board after march 15th, then he could just barely cross the line and win the nomination. that was a scenario with marco rubio. but the point is this, at some point, if after super tuesday, we had a two-man race, that person would have to win everything to stop trump. >> the assumption is rubio has to carry his home state of florida. that's on the 15th. >> the first question is the 15th. and kasich has already said if he doesn't win ohio, he'll get

out. and if he lost florida and stayed in and he ran the board the rest of the dway, he would pass trump and the delegates but not win the nomination and we'd have an interesting convention. again, giving this to ted cruz and he sweeps the rest, this is why the republican establishment is in full panic and why the other candidates have turned to insults. >> that's the number to clinch the republican nomination. >> befoerre we go to our commentators. obviously the race has taken a drastic turn. >> absolotabsolutely. and i want to follow up about ted cruz in texas. texas is not a winner take all state. we understand kasich has to win ohio, rubio, florida.

cruz has to win texas but even if he does, he doesn't get all 155 delegates. there's a 50% tlehresh hold and the it rest are distributed according to congressional district. so, it's not as if cruz is going to win all of texas if he wins. trump is go tag win a lot of delegates in texas. >> and that's a win for donald trump. as long as he has this divided field, he's going to continue to win. marco rubio is essentially emulating trump. it's like open mike. what he's discovered is that if you say outrageous things, you get on tv. so, he's getting a lot of attention and other people aren't. is he driving people to other

candidates? >> it was interesting to hear marco rubio attacking the media. there have been plenty of tough interviews against donald trump. marco rubio said nothing negative about donald trump until two days ago. >> the question is did he wait too long? i don't know him but he strikes me as a cautious politician and he's played a cautious game in this race, trying to be everybody's second choice and now all of a sudden he's jumped in there and done what maybe he should have done long ago. >> they say we had other people we had to deal with at the time. the field was larger. i think really jeb bush was doing it and they were very content to let jeb bush do the attacking. >> but now they're throwing everything at donald trump. they don't have one narrative, they have many. and they have to figure out which is going to be most

potent. i think they have to be more strategic in terms of how they frame this. >> let's acknowledge that this field started out with 17,000 candidates. we are down to five. marco rubio is one of the last five standing and maybe the strategy of waiting until now and then going hard will actually turn out to have been the right call. we don't know yet. but he's played it well enough this long to still be around. in a campaign that has felled governors like scott walker and jeb bush, the presumptive nominee for like 10 years. i think marco rubio, you call him cautious or safe. i don't know. maybe he's savvy. but i know for the republicans

who don't want trump, they are really liking this version of marco rubio. they're liking that he's taking on donald on his ridiculousness. i mean, marco rubio is not going to get quite into the gutter as donald trump has. there are places he will not go in this campaign but they're loving that he's finally swatting away at this. >> you mean voters or elite republicans? >> the 70 to 65% -- >> how do we know this? >> twitter . >> the social media response to what rubio is doing in a campaign where donald trump's toughness and testosterone has been winning the day, they like to see someone else -- >> some alpha male. the fact of the matter is marco rubio is the last hope. because they really don't like

donald trump but they also can't stand ted cruz, so marco rubio is their last hope. and we keep talking about florida. and the most recent polls have him down 20 points from donald trump. and everyone has to see what happens because as it plays out, the party is going to be coalescing around donald trump. >> and are they in control of this process? they have been in past elections, they may not this time. >> this false narrative around the lanes has -- it turns out there are no lanes. this lane and that lane. and so that's been a controlling narrative. i think the other big thing i would pointed to is that as a parent, this whole thing is terrible for the culture.

somebody like marco rubio having to talk about someone peeing in their pants to get attention, it means thekardashian-zation of the nation has begun. >> if you like kanye, you like kanye. you're not going to vanilla ice. he looks like the groom on the wedding cake. this perfect little tiny handsome thing and now he's being vile. >> and i'm not one of the broadcasters who uses spray tan. the entire election could be up for grabs. just a few short days from now

problems by trying to destroy each other. what we need to do is be looking for solutions tonight. it's not about us. it's about the american people. [ applause ] >> governor kasich. >> you know on the way over here, sitting in the green room and watching the early coverage. my father carried mail on his back and his father was a coal minor and my mother's mother was an immigrant and i'm standing on this stage, it's pretty remarkable. but there's lot of young people watching tonight. you can do whatever you want to do in your life. america is an amazing country where a kid like me can grow up to run for president of the united states and be on this stage tonight. so, all the young people out there, your hopes, your dreams, pursue them, shoot for the stars. america is great and you can do

[ applause ] >> senator rubio. >> well, thank you. this election we have to decide the identity of america in the 21st century but as part of this primary, we have to find out our identity as a party and a movement. 36 years ago ronald regan and george h.w. bush began the regan revolution. they described it in the strong national defense and they appealed to our hopes and dreams. now we have to decide if we're still that kind of party and still that kind of movement or simply a party that prays on people 's angers and fears. i hope we continue that movement that america will always be better in its future than it's been in its history. we have terrible health care. obama care is going to be repealed and replaced. we just don't win. our borders are like swiss cheese, everybody pours in. we're going to win a lot. it's going to be a big difference, believe me. it's going to be a big, big difference. [ applause ] >> thank you very much. it's now time to begin questions. voters in the first four states have spoken and mr. trump has emerged as the frontrunner but in five days the candidates will face their biggest test yet, soup r tuesday when nearly half the delegates needed to win the nomination will be awarded and the biggest price of the night is texas. immigration is a key issue in this state for all voters nation wide, including the many people watching us tonight on telemundo. so, that's where we begin. mr. trump, you've called for a

deportation force to remove the it 11 million undocumented imgrants from the united states and you've promised to let, what you call the good ones, come back in. after they've been deported. senator cruz would not allow them to come back in. he says that's the biggest difference between the two of you. he calls your plan amnesty. >> first of all, he was the leader and you can ask marco because they've been debating this every debate that we've had. number one, you wouldn't have asked that as the first question, if it wurnlt for me talking about illegal immigration. but we either have a country or we don't. we have at least 11 million people in this country that came in illegally. they will go out, some will come back, the best through a process. they have to come back legally, through a process and it may not be a very quick process but i

think that's very fair and very fine. they're going to get in line with other people. the it best of them will come back but through a process. [ applause ] >> senator cruz, what's wrong with letting what mr. trump calls the good ones come back the united states? >> you know the people that get forgotten in this debate over immigration are the hard working men and women of this country. our millions of americans losing their jobs, millions of legal immigrants seeing their wages driven down. the past couple of weeks the wall street journal had an interesting article about arizona. the result was illegal immigrants fled the state. some of the business owners complained that the wages they had to pay workers went up and from their perspective it was a bad thing but what they've seen is the dollars they're spending on welfare, on prisons, on

education, all of those are dropping by hundreds of dollars and the legal immigrants in arizona are seeing unemployment drop, are seeing wages rise. that's who we need to be fighting for. we have always welcomed legal immigrants but i think it's a mistake to forgive those who break the law and that's why i've led the fight against granting citizenship to those here illegally and i'll do the same thing as president. >> mr. trump, you want to respond to that. >> well, i'm very glad that ted mentioned arizona because probably the toughest man on boarders is sheriff joe arpaio and two days ago, he totally indorsed me. so, thank you. >> senator cruz has called your immigration plan amnesty and has an ad out there comparing it to

president obama's. he said both of you agree with legal status after a background check, paying a fine and paying taxes. are those claims correct? >> well, first of all, before we do anything, when i'm president of the united states, before we do anything on immigration, we're going to secure the boarder and that's not just the physical border with mexico, it's visa over stays. that's 45% of the problem right there. that's why we need e verifying and so forth and until that, we're not doing anything else and then we'll see what the american people are willing to support. he mentioned that his position as the driven this debate. a lot of these positions he's now taking are new to him. in 2012 donald criticized mitt romney saying he lost because of self deportation. and saw a report that you've hired a significant number of

fight against the gang of 8 amnesty bill, where was donald? he was firing dennis rodman on celebrity apprentice. and one individual on this stage broke the promise and wrote the amnesty bill. but donald funded the gang of 8. he gave over $50,000 to three democrats and two republicans and when you're funding open boarder politicians, you should nlt be surprised when they fight for open borders. and if you want to know who will secure the borders and follow through, you ought to ask who has a record before they were candidate of president and i'm the only one on this stage that has that record and by the way, marco is exactly right that a federal court found donald guilty of being part of a conspiracy and entered a $1 million judgment.
