clinics in texas, again this comes down to justice kennedy as so often is the case. >> justice kennedy, tough on both sides, no tea leaves for us today, pam brown, thank you for your terrific work out there, terrific. thank you for watching, everybody, my colleague wolf starts now. xxxx. hello, i'm wolf blitzer, it's 1:00 p.m. in washington, 5:00 a.m. in baghdad. we begin with presidential politics here in the united states. donald trump and hillary clinton moving closer to clinching their party nominations after winning big on supertuesday. but the contest is by no means over. clinton and trump rolled up victories across the south, but also in new england, both of them won massachusetts, for example. trump won a total of 7 states, far outpacing his republican
10:01 am
rivals. senator ted cruz won three states including his home state of texas. senator marco rubio notched his only win so far in minnesota. on the democratic side, hillary clinton took seven supertuesday states. senator bernie sanders won four states including his home state of vermont. but winning the nomination, comes down to delegates, so let's take a close look at where things stand right now among delegates. among the republicans, donald trump leads with 315 delegates, ted cruz with 2205, marco rubio with 126. on hillary clinton has 1055 delegates, bernie sanders has 418 delegates. the candidates will have a chance to add to their totals this coming saturday, republicans hold elections in kansas, kentucky, louisiana and maine, democrats go to the polls in kansas, louisiana, and nebraska. we'll have all day coverage on
10:02 am
saturday right here on cnn. donald trump is vowing to unify republicans after his dominance on supertuesday. >> i'm a unifier, i know people are going to find that a little bit hard to believe, but believe me, i am a unifier. once we get a all of this finished, i'm going to go after one person, that's hillary clinton, on the assumption she's allowed to run, with which is a big assumption, yooei don't kno that she's going to be allowed to run. >> cnn politics kpek editor mark preston and "washington post" chief correspondent dan bolls, so mark, yeah, trump says she's a unifier, he's going to bring the diverse forces together, can he really do that? >> not only is he a yuan feer, he's a get unifier. he needs to bring the party together, i spoke to more than half a dozen party elders last night. and this is their thinking right
10:03 am
now. they are absolutely scared that donald trump is going to win this nomination. so there's all these things in motion right now, one is do they try to prevent him from getting the nomination in july in cleveland? do they try to prevent him from doing so? another thing they're talking about is running the third party candidacy, creating a safe haven for other republican candidates that are seeking house seats and seeking senate streets. a lot of them are talking about not even going to the convention if he becomes the nominee. so the establishment here in washington and across the country, petrified by donald trump. >> having said all that, david, and you've looked closely at the numbers, record turnout for the republicans, not for the democrats this time around. but yesterday, hundreds of thousands of more republicans decided their wanted to vote in the south or the northeast. >> it's astonishing, it's almost a complete reversal from what we saw in 2008.
10:04 am
in 2008, i think there were some 5,000 votes for democrats, this time around, 5 million votes for republicans, 3 million votes for democrats. this is a real warning sign for the clinton organization, or the sanders operation, if they win the nominee, which seems unlikely right now. but the conservatives, they believe if trump is the nominee, they will activate their base. it's not just a lack of enthusiasm, you're dealing with an incoming democratic president after a year, so there is a natural enthusiasm gap that occurred. >> that republican turnout, the huge numbers, largely the result of trump running? >> i'll quote donald trump out there, based on the debate leader ship. they're coming to see trump. it's part of what's bringing voters out, it's what has generated a lot of interest in the race. >> for the gop establishment supertuesday had nightmarish
10:05 am
qualities. what's the nightmare that they're wore reed about? >> the nightmare is a divided field of opposition to donald trump and as long as that continues as we have been saying for weeks, the easier it makes it for donald trump to continue to rack up victories, and as we get to march 15, when states can award delegates on a winner take all basis, if that field continues to be divided, he can win virtually all of the delegates in the state without getting the majority of the vote. so it is a terribly difficult proposition for the establishment. you've now got in ted cruz and marco rubio and john kasich, candidates that represent other different wings of the republican party, and wings that may be warring against one another. how you get them together in some consolidated fashion to take on trump, i think is the thing that's baffling all of the people who are trying to stop trump. >> the question, though, is, dan, they might not necessarily, any of these other republicans, whether cruz or rubio or john
10:06 am
kasich, they might not be able to reach the threshold of enough delegates, but can they prevent trump from reaching that threshold, so they can go to the convention without those pledged delegates? >> it's theoretically possible, but that's if kasich wins ohio, for rubio to win florida and for some continuation of their ability to win states farther into the spring. i think it is something that certainly the rubio campaign and probably the cruz campaign are clinging to at this point. there are some people who still have some hope for john kasich, being able to bust out and being sort of the favorite of the establishment, but each one has their own priority first and not the overall party's priority. >> mark, you studied this closely, was it a precedent for trump's win last night. he carried those working class
10:07 am
moderates, what they used to call the reagan democrats and in the bible belt he carried them as well. he's bringing in diverse wings of the republican party. >> he's won in different regions of the party, he's won in the northeast, he's won down in the south. he's won in the southwest. we're heading to the industrial midwest right now and guess where those reagan democrats are concentrated? they're concentrated in states like michigan and ohio, missouri and illinois, states like donald trump is going to do very well in. that's why when we talk to our viewers and they say the clock is ticking right now, to the clock is ticking right now and the republicans are in such disarray about how to stop donald trump that i'm not sure they can. >> one of the things that did surprise me in the results last night. take a state like alabama, it was one of the best two states of the night. that is a state that's overwhelmingly evangelical, the electorate, that's not
10:08 am
overwhelmingly college graduates. and massachusetts was his best state and it's far more college graduates and its fewer evangelical. to me, the breadth of his support is reaching all different pockets of the party. >> kwoik question before we go, we're just getting word that mitt romney now has announced he's going to be making a major statement on the state of the campaign, the election tomorrow at the, i guess in salt lake city, what do you anticipate, have you heard anything about where mitt romney is going to come down? because you know he's been quite critical of donald trump. >> in talking to people who may or may not have real insight into what governor romney is thinking, i think the chances of him jumping into the rars as a candidate himself remain pretty slim. i think he wants to be a leader in the anti-trump forces, but i think he wants to speak for himself and that's what he's going to do tomorrow. >> what are you hearing mark preston about this?
10:09 am
he's going to be addressing the hinckley institute of politics in salt lake city, 11:30 a.m. mountain time. >> let me put as many caveats as i can. but mitt romney says this is not an endorsement or an announcement. i did read that there was an announcement about romney possibly getting into the race, no way, no how, he doesn't want any part of it. but he definitely doesn't want donald trump to get in. so don't think that mitt romney is going to put himself on the line. >> he has long wanted to play the party adult to try to get the race back on course which he thinks is more advantageous for their party. >> he is not a trump supporter, at a minimum right there. while hillary clinton received the lion's share of delegates with her supertuesday wins, rival bernie sanders says he's not going anywhere.
10:10 am
let's talk about the state of the democratic race, debby wasserman schultz e what does it tell you about the state of the democratic party, that there were hundreds of thousands of more voter turnouts for the republicans as opposed to the democratic candidates. >> first of all, let's not set a aside the absolute and utter chaos that's going on in the republican party. they are in full blown panic mode, when it comes to the turnout, though, i mean we had nearly as many voters turn out in the early primary state window has as the republicans did with for fewer candidates. even last night, wolf, with colorado, the republicans are in such disarray and it's so chaotic there, that in colorado, the republican party cancelled their caucus. so the only delegates going to
10:11 am
the convention on the republican side are superdelegates. that's how much disarray is going on on the republican side. we had more voters in nevada in our caucus than they had in theirs. and then if you lack at the states in which there was a les competitive contest between our two candidates on our side, that's where the turnout dropped and where there was a more competitive contest in those states, we had nearly the so we're very, very pleased with our turnout and our confident that we're going to have success in november as a result. >> last night dan pfeiffer, former top senior advisor to president obama, worked on the obama campaign back in 2008, he was blunt, he said the democrats worry more about having to run against donald trump than, for example, running against ted cruz, do you agree with him on that? >> i don't. i mean, really, we have watched the trumpification of the republican party, he has an absolute chokehold on the
10:12 am
republican party and is barreli barreli barreling towards the republican nomination, there are people who are doing everything they can to try to stop him. they look like the keystone kops in the process. a at the end of the day, look at what's going on on the other side of the aisle, we have two really incredible candidates who are focused on trying to move the country forward, build on the success that we have had, and helping people keep their health insurance, maintain their requirement and have a good roof over their head, and having a good education that doesn't bankrupt them. those are what the people want in a candidate. who in rubio's case, is i guess taking if you can't beat them join them, talking about small hands and spraying tan, to me, the contrast couldn't be more clear and i know we're going to have to be focused and drimp ve
10:13 am
and more prepared than ever. the general will be close. >> hillary clinton may be ahead in the pledged delegates or the superdelega superdelegates, but he says he's going all the way to the convention. how is that going to benefit the nominee if this is such a long, drawn out process. >> our long, drawn out process is really, completely dramatically different than theirs, our long drawn out process is simply continuing to actually build on the ability for us to add data that is incredibly important to our voter pile, remember, wolf, we have a unified voter file, memorandums of understanding with all our candidates and in our party, the memorandums are all going into our centralized voter file, with the dnc now owns, the republicans were never
10:14 am
able to do that, they have vendors -- they're in disarray, we're going to continue to focus no matter how long our primary goes on making sure that we can be completely prepared to launch our nominee in philadelphia to the white house in november. >> debby wasserman schultz, the chairman of the dnc committee. thank you for joining us. this is an important programming note for our viewers, him clinton and bernie sanders will face off in the democratic presidential debate on sunday night at 8:00 p.m., live from flint, michigan. coming up, mitt romney is speaking tomorrow on the race for the white house in 2016, what will he say? we're working that story, we're getting new information, stay with us. dad, you can just drop me off right here.

10:19 am
editor mark preston who's here with us right now, a simple statement on march 3, former governor of massachusetts will address the hinckley institute of politics in salt lake city. no word on what he's going to say other than the state of the presidential race. >> i'm told that it will not be an announcement -- >> an announcement to run, you mean? >> an announcement to run as many people have speculated nor will it be an endorsement for a specific candidate in the republican race. i was told we'll also discuss the choices facing the republican party and the country moving forward. governor romney has been very critical of donald trump, he's been going back and forth, criticizing him, using social media to do so, so i expect he will be ought there trying to frame the race right now for republican voters who will be voting on saturday and on ward.
10:20 am
>> and there's speculation that donald trump will be the republican nominee. mark, don't go too far away, congressman peter york. do you have any idea what mitt romney is going to say tomorrow? >> no, i don't. all i know is governor romney is very concerned about the direction that donald trump has been taking the republican party, but i have no inside information about what he's going to say tomorrow. >> where does this stand? because there seems to be an enormous amount of concern among the republican leadership that this donald trump train is speeding ahead. >> last night was a big night for donald trump. maybe not as big as it looked originally, but still pretty big. marco rubio what i'm supporting did win minnesota which is important. there's no doubt that right now donald trump is the favorite, and many republicans are
10:21 am
concerned. this is on the establishment thing, i don't consider myself part of any establishment, but the views he's stating, and the statements he's making, criticizing john mccain for not being a war hero. and weapons of mass destruction, and most recently, with david duke of the ku klux klan, the guy who supported mccain for president, it's not -- i disagreed with rand paul, but if he were the front-runner now, he represents an ideology, ted cruz represents an ideology, they're three distinct ideologies, but at least they represent something, with donald trump, it's day to day, it's a personality, it's all based around trump and his personality. that is what republicans are concerned about. >> if he is the nominee, though, will you be in cleveland at the
10:22 am
republican convention in july endorsing him, working to get him elected? >> well, first of all, i'm definitely going to be at the convention, i hope i'm there supporting marco rubio when he's nominated. if not, i'll decide what to do. but i am a republican, i'm a lifelong republican, i've been active in the republican party for 50 years. so i want to stay as active, and to do that, you have to work with the nominee. but donald trump makes it difficult when he calls our last republican president a liar, who intentionally allowed americans to be killed in iraq under false pretenses, that's hard to work around. but we'll have to see. right now it's going to be difficult to show the type of support i would like to give to the nominee of my party. >> marco rubio, he won minnesota yesterday, on march 15, it's winner take all in his home state of florida, most recent polls there show he's maybe 15 or 20 points behind donald trump florida. he's got to win florida to continue, if he loses florida,
10:23 am
it's over for your candidate? >> yes, again, i'm not speaking for marco rubio or the campaign, i would say that marco rubio expect him to win florida.i - my understanding is the polls are a lot closer than the 20 points. but the reality is marco rubio will have to win florida, i expect him to win it. that's why we could over the next few months, donald trump even though he's ahead, not getting the majority of the delegates that he needs, meaning the majority of the republicans are against him. and so that could be very lively, so i hope you're out there covering it. >> one of the neighboring states is out there -- we're talking about new jersey, six new jersey newspapers are calling for governor chris christie to resign, saying he's an utter disgrace. what do you think of chris christie's endorsement of donald trump?
10:24 am
>> i don't understand it because i believed governor christie when he was saying tro ing thro the debates that donald trump wasn't qualified, doing a tv show is not the same as being a president or being a chief executive. so i was surprised by chris christie and also by so many of the positions that donald trump has taken are so opposite of chris christie, so i was surprised to see him standing there last night. that's hard for me to figure out. >> representative peter king, thank you for joining us. up next, voters in five states head to the polls this coming saturday. we'll break down what each of the candidates needs to do to stay competitive.
10:25 am
10:26 am
10:27 am
10:28 am
10:29 am
no rest for the weary, this coming saturday, five more states will have their say in the 2016 presidential campaign here in the united states. on the republican side, there are caucuses in kansas and kentucky, while there were primaries in louisiana and maine. on the democrat side, there are caucuses in kansas and nebraska and a primary in louisiana. i'm joined now by cnn political commentator amanda carpenter. our political commentator dawna brazil is with us. ladies, thanks very much for joining us, let me get your reaction, amanda, i'll start with you, mitt romney, the republican presidential nominee four years ago announcing that tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. mountain time, or 11:30 a.m. eastern, he
10:30 am
will make a speech addressing the state of the 2016 presidential race. what are you hearing? what do you think? >> i mean judging from his actions last week where he started calling for the release of donald trump's tax returns, it's clear that mitt romney is frustrated with the way things are going and maybe wants to influence the race in a positive direction or maybe be held to the same standards that he was held to during his race. if he had a chance to make an impact on the race, it really seems like it would have been before new hampshire endorsing mar marco rubio. >> it's not like the man you like, donald trump. >> mitt romney had to almost aa poll jazz for being successful and being wealthy, where donald trump goes out front and says i'm successful and i'm wealthy. but the only reason people are paying attention is because he's
10:31 am
called out donald trump. something that most other politicians have not had the courage to do. but mitt romney lost not once, but twice, so why are we giving him any sort of attention at all, he's the reason why we have a candidate like donald trump and ted cruz at the top of the polls, he's a member of the establishment he created. >> that's why we're paying attention, obviously, he's respected. >> he's a party elder, he's a -- he's someone who understands the republican base, mitt romney is probably going to try to tell the republican party to get their house in order. there's no need for the republican party to fall apart and break up over the nomination of ted cruz or donald trump. so i'm sure as a party elder, his role tomorrow is to try to make sense out of this nonsense. >> here's one thing, as we have seen after supertuesday last night, the establishment lane that we always talked about have
10:32 am
been crushed. i think this is the establishment struggling to find -- kind of reset it, since they have no other vehicle as a candidate to express their voice. >> and let's remember, the reason why he lost in 2012 is that 4 million to 5 million stayed home. those 4 million to 5 million are the ones making donald trump and senator rubio at the top. people are ready for him to just kind of go back to massachusetts. >> the establishment land is crushed, but you have all these senators that are up for re-election in this coming year, you have members of congress that are up for re-election, governors, they're part of the establishment, and they want to make sure they have a passing lane once all the debris has been removed. >> can any of these republicans who are challenging trump right now, whether rubio, kasich, dr. ben carson actually get the
10:33 am
number of delegates that they need the to become the republican nominee, or can they combine to get enough delegates to prevent donald trump from going to the convention, guaranteed with enough pledged delegates. >> we look at the -- that's why ted cruz is making the argument, asking his fellow contenders to prayerfully consider dropping out of the race because we have to go big or go home. i mean marco rubio is saying we can go to the convention. you can't keep moving the fire wall back and back and back. and that's why you see lindsay graham of all people, who's really been open about how much he detests tom cruise, who's saying maybe it's time to get behind him to stop donald trump. >> they're going to do whatever they can to prevent him from being the leader in the republican party. >> i call them the rusty republicans, and senator graham, if i was senator cruz, i would
10:34 am
say keep your endorsement please, because it's not helping senator rubio with all these grand endorsements that are coming to him. i think senator rubio woke up this morning and said i'm losing in the polls in florida, i'm young, i have a chance in my future career. the majority of senators usually win their home state. that's how it's been with republican politics, does he really want to take that risk and damage hiss credibility? >> this is senator lindsay graham, listen to this. >> i think john kasich is the most electable guy in the field, trump's not a republican. >> trump gets the nomination, will you support him? >> i'll answer that after the convention. >> that's not necessarily a ringing endorsement. >> remember, i'm a democrat and i'm neutral. but donald trump is redefining the republican party, ted cruz
10:35 am
has redefined to the republican party, as a member of the united states senate, the most establishment of the establishment. so the notion then -- of course i respect lindsey graham, he's a great senator. but the voters are redefining the party. the bosses who are in control who sit at the table, they need to just chill out. >> one thing the establishment has underestimated throughout this race is the amount of voter anger. we talk about voter anger all the time. you have two approaches with ted cruz and donald trump. you have ted cruz who has focused the criticism on -- donald trump is firing the anger at anyone that gets in his path. so can the party channel it in a productive way or are we just going to go guns blazing, anybody that stands in our way, remains to be seen. >> amanda, the whole notion and let me ask scottie to weigh in on this. last night in the speeches, donald trump, he gave a speech
10:36 am
that was trying to say, yeah, i want to unify the party, let's move on. he didn't really go out there and slash cruz or slash rubio, b he was really going after him and marco rubio is not stopping either, he's really going after him. this is two-on-one on donald trump. >> and i think he can handle it because he is bringing the diversity of the party. his numbers were so huge for mr. trump in massachusetts, they probably were for him. what you saw last night. we have always said, marco rubio did not need to take donald trump out, he needed to take ted cruz out. if he dropped out, the majority of his base would go to donald trump. so you've got this weird triangle going on right now, unfortunately, mr. trump's theory is not necessarily taking any of them out. >> who would be a stronger
10:37 am
challenger for bernie sanders or hillary clinton. would it be donald trump, ted cruz or marco rubio. >> we should not fear the world -- let them sort out their nomination process and then we'll take that on. right now our concern is voter turnout, voter enthusiasm. clearly we want to register new voters, get them deeply involved and turn out. 17 more states will be holding caucuses or primaries over the next, what, several days, two weeks. there's a lot of delegates still left at the table, so whether you're bernie sanders or marco rubio or ted cruz, there's still a lot of delegates up for grabs. >> we're following the breaking news on mitt romney to deliver what he's describing as a major statement on the 2016 campaign

10:43 am
quintessential mitt, reminding them of the decision that's at hand. we can expect to hear a little bit of disappointment from him, as far as where the rhetoric has gone in this race and i think he's going to address that. he always conducted himself as a candidate with such dignity and in a way that, you know, republicans across the board could be proud of him, even if they didn't agree with him all the time. and i think that, you know, we can expect that he's going to want to remind people how important that is when you're looking to run to be the leader of the free world. >> i know he's been very critical of donald trump, but do you think it's reasonable that he's going to leaf the door open at least a bit of the possibility of his running for the presidency once again? >> i don't anticipate that, i think that he's made it very clear that he has no intention of running again, but i do think that he wants to sort of continue to be, you know, a voice, an adult in the room, if you will, that's just sort of
10:44 am
remaining these candidates that this is a very big office and that the rhetoric should sort of match the importance of the office that these candidates sa seek and i think that he's hoping to do that tomorrow. >> do you anticipate he will do a formal endorsement? >> i think if he does do that, he'll do that on his own time frame. i don't anticipate that tomorrow's speech will be the place for that. i think he really wants to send a larger message about the issues at hand and the things that candidates should be focusing on and frankly trying to sort of salvage the brand of the republican party that's been a little bit tarnished in recent days. >> but a lot of the critics would point out, katy, and you have heard this so many times, it's obviously going to be too little too late, this trump train is moving ahead. >> there's 71% of the delegates still yet to be decided and you

correspondent dash re starr. she has been following this for us. what is the united states doing now with this detainee? >> what is happening now, this person is held in northern iraq by the u.s. military. they are interrogating him for everything he may know. they do believe he has valuable information about isis. what kind of information, we don't know. did he have information that could have led to the disruption of a plot? nobody is exactly saying that just yet. but we are told he is talk in this interrogation process. the u.s. says they don't want to hold people, don't want a whole new detainee program but delta force, the elite force is now on the ground in iraq conducting these missions. they have orders, capture or kill top isis operative, capture them and interrogate them for all the intelligence they have. the feeling by special operation is this will provide them very valuable information about it
10:51 am
works out about isis, where they are located, how they operate, what their plots and plans are that can be disrupted down road. this now the first step. the pentagon says they will turn him over to the iraqis. only a short-term detention. but very interesting today the pentagon did not define what is short-term detention. wolf. >> and it sounds like this is just the beginning a lot more military activity for the u.s. boots on the ground. as they say. these are real combat boots on the ground and they have got a major mission. barbara thank you very much. coming up a possible new clue in the search for the search of malaysia flight 370. debris found along the coastline. why there is a good chance it actually came from the missing jetliner. find fantasy shows.

investigators hope to learn more about a piece of the wreckage from a boeing 777 that wash awho over the weekend along the coast of mozambique in africa. the plane disappeared nearlily two years ago. richard quest joins us live from new york. richard has a brand-new book coming out next week entitled the vanishing of flight mh 370, the true story of the hunt for the missing malaysian plane. what do we know? >> we know that -- those who have seen it and looked at photographs believe it is a strong possibility it has come from a boeing 777. they belief it has come from the partf the aircraft known as the horizontal stabilizer, which puts it at the back. different from the planneron found on reunion island which came from the wing. we must caution and caveat that
10:57 am
although it is in the right place -- if you look, you'll see where the other piece was found on reunion. and then on the other side of madagascar you've got this piece. it's still way to early to say with any degree of certainty or confirmation this is from mh 370. but those who have looked at the pictures, those who have seen it say there is a strong probability. >> have there been any other 777s that have disappeared in that part of the world around there? >> no, there haven't. that's the biggest piece of evidence. the piece isn't that big. before they get much further they need to establish it is from a 777. they need to absolutely identify, maybe if not the parts numbers or the serial numbers they need to find some form of identification. it is from an aircraft seems to be clear. its that words "no step" on it
10:58 am
which is what you fine on the plane where they want to warn people from stepping on parts of the fuselage. even if it is from the plane it is unlikely to tell us anything about the final resize resting ground of hm 370. and it's certainly not going to tell us what happened when the plane went missing. it's disappointing to say it. it's just further evidence the plane did crash. but it's not going to tell us why. >> but the other piece that was found earlier, the flaperon, they did confirm -- and just to remind our view urs -- that they know for sure it did come from mh 370, right? >> yes, and it wasn't until it was an enormous amount of nashing and wailing of teeth. they confirmed it, then said high probability. they went backwards and boards. finally after weeks they did say yes it was from mh 370. so far, no one has seriously come forward to contradict that
10:59 am
plane. the conspiracy theorists say a government or something planted it to hide what happened. no doubt the conspiracy theorists will say this time what was found is a plant or a decoy. those of us who live in the real world have to take what the experts say. so far, from those who looked at it -- and there will need to be further tests by the mozambique authorities, the australians and the malaysians, and it's trending towards this is one part of mh 370. >> arguably the greatest aviation mystery ever. i want to remind viewers of your new book coming out in the coming days. let me put it up on the full screen. there you see it the vanishing of flight mh 370. richard quest is the author. i highly recommend you reading it. go ahead. programming note for viewers. retrace the key moments of mh 370 by tuning in for a cnn
