cry-proof, stay-proof look? neutrogena® makeup remover does. it erases 99% of your most stubborn makeup with one towelette. need any more proof than that? neutrogena. we're following breaking news, we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. it's 10:00 a.m. in los angeles, 1:00 p.m. in washington, 6:00 p.m. in london. wherever you're watching from around the world, thanks very much for joining us. right now we're waiting for the start of the donald trump campaign rally. the event in cadillac, michigan, expected to start any minute now. we'll bring it live when donald trump takes the stage.
10:01 am
we'll get to the rest of the presidential race in just a few moments but first we start with a stunning new development in the o.j. simpson murder case. the los angeles police where now talking about a knife, a knife allegedly found when simpson's former brentwood house was demolished back in 1998. listen to this. >> within the last month lapd became aware of an item that was allegedly recovered by a citizen at the rockingham property and possibly during the demolition of the site. we need to vet that, we don't know if that's an accurate account of how this item came into our possession. the actual item is described as a knife, i'm not going to go into the description of the knife because that could be germane to determining whether or not this actual piece of evidence is, in fact, evidence or just a facsimile or made up
10:02 am
story so we need to look into that and our robbery homicide is going to look into that. so what i can tell you that the story as it's told to us by the person we received it from and the person we received this knife from is a retired lapd officer who retired back in the late '90s. he was a motor officer and at the time according to him he was working an off duty, which is -- he was working a movie job which a lot of our officers do on an off duty basis as well as our retired officers. so i do not know whether he was retired at the time that he allegedly received this item from the person who claimed they found it on the property or still, in fact, an lapd officer and retired some time after that. >> all right. our paul vercammen is joining us live from los angeles. he covered that news conference. also joining us, cnn legal analyst danny cevallos joining us from new york.
10:03 am
paul, the knife resurfacing now all these years later opening new questions about the killing of nicole brown simpson and ron goldman. why was this knife withheld from police for all of these years? >> well, that issing? th -- that is something captain neiman and others are asking. they want to know why. as you heard, a lot of this sounds almost second hand. that say this officer, wolfe, was working on a movie shoot. that's a very common thing in los angeles to make extra money when the knife was turned over to him by a construction worker. you'll note that andy neiman, the captain, was extremely careful to say "allegedly." there was no specifics given about this knife, i pressed him on whether it was a machete or a kitchen knife or pen knife he just said it wasn't a machete and it was a knife. they are being, as i sid, cautious about this, i can tell you neiman is traditionally a pretty straight shooter.
10:04 am
i pressed him off camera as well and said what about this? suddenly we have o.j. simpson back in the news, people are watching this television show and he smiled and laughed and said "the timing is interesting, the timing is interesting." and he also added they will not come out and have another press conference unless there's significant developments. they are trying to find out why if this knife is somehow connected to this case why it was not turned up until what seemed to be about a month ago. >> let me bring danny cevallos, our legal analyst. danny, how long would it take normally forensic wise to go through, look at this knife and see if this knife was really available to folks back in the '90s at the time of the killing of these two people, does there exist any dna evidence on this knife potentially. how long does that forensic analysis usually take? >> well, in the typical case the test has to wait until they get through the other tests that are
10:05 am
ahead of in the line. even if it gets a priority, they'll test for a number of different things -- hair, blood, virtually all of the forensic potentials but the reality is it's going to be a difficult test because this stuff is probably degraded significantly by being buried in the soil for decades. so the extent to which they can conduct these tests depends in part upon an initial evaluation of how much material is even on there to begin with. so it's hard to say at this point when you consider what priority it's been given and the extent to which they're going to subject the knife to testing. that will tell us, but there's no way to predict how long it will take. even with a priority. with the highest priority maybe a few days, maybe a week. >> because they've had the knife apparently now for a month and they say they're continuing the testing, in the news conference, danny, the lapd captain also
10:06 am
said he doesn't believe o.j. simpson can be tried again for murder. listen to this. >> i am not an attorney but it's my understanding from being a police officer for nearly 30 years that double jeopardy would be in place here so we could not charge mr. simpson with the homicides that he's already been charged with because he's been acquitted. >> do you agree? you are an aattorney. what do you think, danny? >> he is correct in so far that double jeopardy will barre prosecution for the same crime or a lesser included offense. so o.j. could not be charged again with murder nor could he be charged with aggravated assault which exists somewhere below murder. so for the most part the answer is yes. he can not be reprosecuted. however there are exceptions to double jeopardy and under the applicable test, it's called the blockburger test, the question is, is the new crime the same as the -- or similar to the prior crime? and the test is whether or not
10:07 am
it has elements that differ from the previous acquitted crime. now, in reality, a court would probably look at, say, a charge of burglary and say, well, it's too close, it arises out of the same transaction and probably bar it. but a creative prosecutor might find not only a new defendant, maybe someone who was complicit theoretically in this knife hiding or any other crime or against the same defendant, against o.j. if they believed that there was a separate crime that was so distinct that it would survive a constitutional challenge. so just for example, and i'm throwing one out there, burglary might be a different enough crime. if someone entered the premises with the intent to commit a felony therein. but the problem is still you have the underlying felony of still that murder and he gotten a acquittal on that. so in all likelihood double jeopardy applies but there is always a glimmer of hope for a creative prosecutoprosecutor.
10:08 am
>> i want to go back to paul vercammen. good explanation, danny. paul, the murder occurred back in 1994, the o.j. simpson estate was demolished in 1998. that's supposedly when the knife surface when some individual, we don't know who, handed over this knife to this retired -- we believe it was a retired police officer at the time and for all these years that police officer had in knife and only recently within the last month handed over the knife to authorities. is that the correct timeline? >> not exactly. we understand the demolition took place in around 1998, wolf, and we're not sure if the officer was retired at the time. we know he was off duty working on the movie shoot and apparently the person who gave him the knife, allegedly according to the lapd, was a construction worker. we also asked was it found in the ground? was it buried? was it concealed in the wall? no answer on that. they say, of course, they won't
10:09 am
give up too many clues because this is an active and ongoing nicole brown murder investigation sand ron goldman murder investigation. that has never been solved per law. many people, of course, would say they believe o.j. simpson did this. so they were careful to go ahead and call it the nicole brown investigation and we'll just have to see what the next steps are as they pointed out, they're waiting for all of the studies to come back on this knife, again, they're couching it carefully saying allegedly that this knife was give on the this officer by someone who was working construction at the now famous or infamous rockingham man manor, wolf. >> the police captain himself said this could be a made up story because whether he was retired, whether he was off dood, why would a police officer hold on the a knife since 1998 that was handed over to him that
10:10 am
may or may not have been directly involved in the murder case of these two people in los angeles. why would he hold on to it all of these years and now suddenly hand over a knife? there's a lot of suspicion that this follows this major tv movie about the o.j. simpson case that just aired. there's people raising doubt about this story. you've heard that, right? >> no doubt. and not the least of whom is captain niemann himself. he raised his eyes and said "interesting timing, interesting timi timing." of course anything involving o.j. simpson in this city seems to whip up some sort of hysteria and they are going to view this with a healthy dose of skepticism there's no doubt that people want to know more about this, they want to hear more about that knife, that knife being the alleged murder weapon, the holy grail, if you will, for people who are obsessed with
10:11 am
this o.j. simpson nicole brown story. so they are going to be very careful, he said there won't be a press conference unless there's a significant development. >> paul vercammen, danny cevallos, guys, we'll city on top of this story. but we'll move on to politics in the united states. the race for the white house. we're waiting for the start of a donald trump campaign rally in michigan. we'll bring it live once donald trump takes to the stage it's trump's second event in michigan. we've heard from texas senator ted cruz, florida senator marco rubio fresh off of last night's republican presidential debate. >> little marco, little marco. cruz, lying ted cruz, lying ted. the stupid romney, stupid mitt. he is a dumb guy. >> i don't want us to have a nominee that people have to make up an excuse why they're voting for or hold their nose and vote for, i want us to have a nominee we're excited about. if donald trump is a republican
10:12 am
nominee, we'll have a party that has to somehow justify to itself why it's voting for this man. >> i get that people are angry we're so frustrated, we're so furious. we've been lied to over and over and over again but donald trump embodies that washington corruption that we are angry abo about. >> tomorrow's contest we're calling super saturday. it's four states, 155 delegates -- kansas, kentucky, louisiana, and maine. sunday puerto rico votes. the democrats have three contests on saturday, kansas, louisiana and nebraska will award 109 delegates total. maine holds its democratic caucusin caucuses sunday. last night's republican debate was raucous and raunchy at times but did it do anything to change the state of the republican race moving forward?
quote
10:13 am
joining us to talk about that, mat schlapp, the host of the ongoi ongoing cpac. also john phillips, a donald trump supporter, amanda carpenter, cnn political director, communications director -- former director for ted cruz and political commentat commentator an commentator ana navarro. anna, did they slow down the trump momentum? >> i don't think anything changes as far as where the difference candidates stand. i do get the sense that last night was the turning point and the drop that filled the cup with the crassness, with the vulgarity. so many people, republicans, not republicans that watched that debate yesterday are feeling today disappointed, are feeling today distraught by just how low the level of discourse has
10:14 am
dipped in the midst of this democratic process. and i think all of us regardless of who we may support should today call on those republican candidates and say enough is enough. you are running for president of the united states. start behaving as such. take your juvenile insults elsewhere. this process, this office requires a different kind of behavior. >> amanda? >> to be fair i found the debate hard to watch at times and i think it's largely because donald trump continues to dominate the debate. he has dragged the discourse down so low, marco rubio's kind of been goaded into taking him on, adopting his tactics. people don't like to see that but the thing i did like to see was marco rubio and ted cruz teaming up to make the critique of donald trump that you can't trust him to create american jobs. he's a washington deal maker that you can't trust. that is the one thing that could bring the party together. the republican party will lose a lot if donald trump becomes the
10:15 am
nominee. those two guys showing a way forward for the establishment, the conservative wings to come sergeant to the only path out of this. >> john phillips, let's talk a little bit about what happened on cnn's new day earlier this morning. senator rubio called donald trump the most vulgar person to ever aspire to the presidency. but one of the low points of the debate came when trump responded to rubio's earlier remarks about the size of his hands. that was just part of the back and forth. listen to this. >> look at those hands. are they small hands? [ cheers and applause ] and he referred to my hands if they're small something else must be small. i guarantee you there's no problem. i guarantee you. >> i have a policy question for you, sir. >> let's see if he answers its. >> i will, don't worry about it, marco. [ cheers and applause ] don't worry about it, little marco, i will. >> let's hear about it. >> don't worry about it, little
10:16 am
marco. >> if, in fact, you went to manhattan and said "i'm lying to the american people" then the voters have a right to know. >> you're the liar. you're the lying guy up here. you're the one. >> release the tape. >> you're the one. >> excuse me. i've given my answer, lying ted. >> i've given my answer, lying ted. john phillips, that exchange, there were several other exchanges similar to that, what does that say about the state of this race right now? >> well, i can tell you there, watching last night's debate, watching that exchange reminds me why i hate playing monopoly with married couples where you spend an hour trying to unload oriental avenue and they pass back park place for fun-sized snicker bars. it was a two-on-one affair where they changed their philosophy and ganged up on donald trump and they clearly got the same memo from mitt romney where they said he was untrustworthy, transactional, a con man. and after two hours of telling
10:17 am
us what a gift frommer donald trump is, they asked if he's the nominee willout support him? and after trashing him for two hours, every one of them said yes so all of his imperfections they described in great detail for two hours weren't enough to disqualify him as being the republican nominee for president in their eyes. and if it's not enough to disqualify him in their eyes, why should it be enough to disqualify him to voters and specifically a plurality of republicans who have been supporting anymore all these early voting states? >> trump was asked if he would support the other three if they got the nomination and not run as a thursday party candidate, he said yes, he would support whoever the republican nominee is, he would honor that pledge. the other three also said they would honor that pledge. they signed months ago. matt, we just got word a little while ago that donald trump has decided not to attend the cpac conference, he's going to stay on the campaign trail looking ahead to the contest tomorrow.
10:18 am
what was the reaction at c super pac. >> i guess that's one way to say it. i would say something different. we were firm with these candidates. we're neutral in this presidential race but we were very firm with all these candidates that we wanted them to be at c super pac and they but they had to give a speech and answer questions. we got into a disagreement about whether the rules would be enforced for donald trump and he pulled out. we're disappointed. donald trump has been at cpac for several years. this room is full behind me and they would love to hear from him. in a sense when you come to cpac as a presidential candidate you're paying respects to conservative voters who will make up two-thirds of those people who will pull the levers. i think it's a big mistake not to be here and for him not to be willing to come to these conservatives to tell him why he thinks he'll be a great president. >> just to be precise, matt, what you're hearing, he didn't want to accept the format q&a as part of the dialogue he was going to have the people
10:19 am
attending the cpac conference? is that the suggestion. >> let me be very clear. he rsvp'd over and over again immediately. he's always loved coming to c super pac. this crowd enjoys hearing from him. we thought everything was set but the one thing we have to be clear on with every candidate is they'll get the exact same amount of time to speak and get the same amount of time to answer questions on the sage. we won't bend on that. >> all right, that's probably a big disappointment to the folks who have gathered at the cpac conference right now. guys, thanks very much. also coming up, president obama just spoke about today's jobs report here in the united states. it was good news for the u.s. economy. what does the rest of the world think of donald trump and his candidacy. richard quest standing by the join us. you may think it's a result of brushing too hard. it's not. it's a sign of early gum disease... listerine(r) can help reverse... early gum disease in just two weeks. listerine(r). power to your mouth™!

i drive to the hoop. i drive a racecar. i have a driver. his name is carl. but that's not what we all have in common. we talked to our doctors about treatment with xarelto®. xarelto® is proven to treat and help reduce the risk of dvt and pe blood clots. xarelto® is also proven to reduce the risk of stroke in people with afib, not caused by a heart valve problem. for people with afib currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto® and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. you know, taking warfarin, i had to deal with that blood testing routine. i couldn't have a healthy salad whenever i wanted. i found another way. yeah, treatment with xarelto®. hey, safety first. like all blood thinners, don't stop taking xarelto® without talking to your doctor, as this may increase your risk of a blood clot or stroke. while taking, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop.
10:22 am
xarelto® may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. xarelto® can cause serious and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. get help right away for unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising, or tingling. if you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto®, watch for back pain or any nerve or muscle related signs or symptoms. do not take xarelto® if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. before starting xarelto®, tell your doctor about any kidney, liver, or bleeding problems. xarelto® is the number one prescribed blood thinner in its class. well that calls for a round of kevin nealons. make mine an arnold palmer. same here. with xarelto® there is no regular blood monitoring and no known dietary restrictions. treatment with xarelto® was the right move for us. ask your doctor about xarelto®.

that just tastes better. with more vitamins. and 25% less saturated fat. only eggland's best. better taste. better nutrition. better eggs. positive news on a major issue in the u.s. presidential race, the state of the u.s. economy. brand new figures show 242,000 jobs were added here in the united states in february, beating expectations. the unemployment rate held steady at 4.9%, but wage growth only grew at 2.2%. just a little while ago, president obama had this to say about the new numbers.
10:24 am
>> today america's businesses are creating jobs at the fastest pace since the 1990s. america's work force is growing at the fastest pace since the year 2000. it is showing the kind of strength and durability that makes america's economy right now the envy of the world, despite the enormous head winds that it's receiving because of weaknesses in other parts of the world. >> the u.s. labor secretary thomas perez is jim us now. secretary thank you so much for joining us. : you're happy with these numbers? >> a solid report showing a confident economy. >> the rnc obviously not very happy. they put out a statement, i don't know if you saw it "the economy is still not close to where it needs to be, the obama continues to produce falling wages for american workers, making it harder and harder for them to support their families." wage growth, that's what they say is a big problem. >> you know, the eeyore caucus
10:25 am
of fear-mongerers and fact deniers are at it again. when this president took office we had lost over two million jobs in the three months before he got there. this report now, we've had six years in a row, the longest streak on record of private-sector job growth to the tune of 14.3 million jobs. not only that, not only quantity but quality as well. the areas where we see the biggest growth are in education and health, business and professional services. these are good middle-class jobs. kr construction is coming back. a good month last month. we're moving in the right direction not withstanding the eeyore caucus who frankly have an interesting relationship with the facts. >> they also say this "the percentage of americans no longer in the labor force is at a three decade high. economic growth continues to be knee mick and the middle-class continues to shrink." fact clul ual factually, is the percentage of americans no longer in the labor
10:26 am
force at a three decade high? >> no. and if you look at the labor force participation rate, not only is 242,000 jobs last month a good number, but we're seeing a trend of more people entering the work force. why? because they have confidence, our labor force participation rate is the highest in over a year. the reason is because people think they can get a job and they are. that's one indicator of confidence. another is car sales. last year was the best year ever in our country. another solid month last month. you look at the data, we had almost seven job seekers for every job opening in the depths of the recession. now we have 1.4. we have work to do. >> it's not perfect. critics point out that people have simply given up looking for jobs. >> again, you look at the labor force participation rate and it's better than it was in a year. you look at the broadest measure
10:27 am
of unemployment and we keep six different measures, that broadest measure went down by.2% last month. so, again, people who oppose this president -- and, by the way, this progress occurred notwithstanding people like mitch mcconnell who said "i want this guy to be a one-term president." so we see progress. we have to make sure the wind that's at our back results in shared prosperity. >> and people have to remember when president obama took office the people were losing jobs at a rate of 800,000 a month and the unemployment rate was close to 10%. >> it was close to 10%. mitt romney when he ran for president said "if you elect me president i'll get the unemployment rate down to 6% by the end of 2016. is here we are at the beginning of 2015 we're at 4.9%. >> how will this play out politically in the campaign right now? these positive job numbers? >> well, what we're going to do is the president as he did today and i was there with him, he's going to continue to tell the story of the facts.
10:28 am
again, people are in a fact-free zone who oppose the president. the fact of the matter is the president inherited a mess. as a result of his investments and courageous decisions to help save the auto industry, to have the recovery act, we are now seeing the longest sustained period of private-sector job growth in history. we still have more work to. >> do you've endorsed hillary clinton, right? >> i do but i'm here in my official capacity. >> i've got to ask you that your name is being floated at a vice president running mate for hillary clinton. you're smiling. >> no, i'm smiling because my focus -- i've got 322 days till the weekend. my singular focus is on continuing this progress. i meet people wherever i go around this country who were kicked to the side of the road in this recession. they're coming back. they appreciate the investments we've been able to make and that's what it's about. making sure the wind at our back results in shared prosperity.
10:29 am
>> it's good to have a fellow bu buffalonan. we went to different high schools, there was no rivalry there. thanks for coming. >> take care. always a pleasure. >> go bills, amen. the water crisis in flint is a political issue. democrats are there in force but republican presidential candidate marco rubio says they're not being genuine. we're going to get reaction to that and a whole lot more when we come back. now ... a breakthrough from aveeno® absolutely ageless® night cream with active naturals® blackberry complex ... ... a whole new way to keep skin looking younger longer ... ... starting tonight. part of the new absolutely ageless collection from aveeno® joining her daughter's yoga class.ng about she was thinking about her joints. but now that she's taking osteo bi-flex, she's noticing a real difference in her joint comfort. with continued use, it supports increased flexibility over time. karen: "she's single."

cnn is hosting the next democratic presidential debate this coming sunday night in flint, michigan.
10:34 am
flint has become a flash point due to the awful water crisis there affecting the health and welfare of the city's residents. today a congressional delegation heard from residents leading that delegation was democratic congressman dan kilby who represents flint. what are you hoping for sunday's presidential debate will have on the residents of flint because of the awful water crisis that they've had to endure. >> well, all of our work has been about getting solutions and any time we can shine a big light on this terrible crisis this man made crisis in flint hopefully it will push those who have it within their power to fix this problem toing actually that. i'm referring to the state of michigan. the governor and the state and the legislature who are largely responsible for what happened in flint. the fact that we're having a national debate in flint is not
10:35 am
a convince dense. >> listen to what marco rubio said at the republican presidential debate last night in detroit about the water crisis in flint. >> i give the governor credit. he took responsibility for what happened and he's talked about people being held accountable and the need to change this. governor snyder. [ applause ] here's the point, this should not be a partisan issue, the way the democrats have tried to turn this into a partisan issue that somehow republicans woke in the morning and decided "it's a good idea to poison kids with lead." >> congressman, your reaction? >> there's a big difference between taking responsibility and apologizing and taking responsibility to fix the problem that you created he has a billion dollars of unbudgeted
10:36 am
surplus he doesn't know what to do with and people in flint can't drink their water. i don't give him credit for hiring lawyers and public relations firms faster than hiring public health nurses and to fix the infrastructure. highs priorities are wrong. >> what would the federal government's responsibility? >> i think the federal government should help. the people of flint are american citizens. my legislation doesn't offset what i think is the state responsibility. in terms of the federal responsibility that took place the environmental protection agency has oversight over states that enforce clean drinking water laws. i guess they made an error in judgment in believing the state was concerned about enforcing regulations. the state was continually called
10:37 am
upon by the epa to deal with the problem of the corrosive water in flint and the epa took the state at their word they were doing it when they were not. so, you know, there's some responsibility to the epa. but for the governor to say there's equal responsibility, there's no equivalency at all. the state government did this to splint and because the federal government didn't stop them from doing it more quickly is not the same thing as doing this in the first place. >> congressman dan kildee who represents flint, michigan, in the united states helpive the, we ceci you sunday in flint, michigan. thanks for joining us. >> thank you, wolf. don't forget, sunday night, 8:00 p.m. east certain the democratic presidential debate in flint, michigan. republican front-runner donald trump has a lot of tough talk when it comes to u.s. trading partners and allies. how are those countries viewing him? what's the impression of donald

we'll extract some concessions out of the chinese, we'll go into iraq, take the oil." you can imagine what the mexicans feel about that, what the chinese feel about that, what the iraqis feel about that. >> richard, some of donald trump's anneal the united states is the sense that he will be a tough negotiator with trading partners, whether china or mexico or japan. he's argued for big tariffs if necessary to reduce the u.s. trade deficit. how's that playing? >> well, it's playing rather badly for the simple reason it ignores exist iing u.s. treaty obligation. when you talk about mexico, there's an inconvenient fact called nafta which exists. never mind building walls, theres a free trade agreement between canada, the u.s. and mexico so you have that minor little problem to circumnavigate. as for china, well there you have the wto, the world trade organizati organization.
10:46 am
now, i've read trump's plans and he said he will go to the wto but you can't unilaterally start imposing tariffs and he talks about how he's going to force china to open up and he's going to call china a currency manipulator and he's going to make china do this, that or the other but we're short on facts about how you actually do that and the final point on all these trade deficit numbers that he refer refers to, the deficit number is the difference between what you buy and sell. the u.s. is still a huge exporter of many goods, manufacturered goods, is high tech goods, pharmaceuticals to these countries as well. let nobody be under any fool that you don't just suddenly go in and say to china or mexico, hey, this is the way it's going to be. there are rules, treaties and negotiated agreements. >> bobby, a brand new cnn/orc poll we're just releasing right now shows that people were asked

about which countries they consider here in the united states a threat to the u.s. look at these. 77% consider iran. 74% north korea. 69% russia. 63% china. 29% cuba. i guess some people are wondering if the rhetoric out there including donald trump's rhetoric is playing into people's fears. >> i'm sure it is. particularly his rhetoric with respect to china. he hasn't said a lot about iran, it has to be said. so the perceptions but about iran precedes donald trump. >> he says the nuclear deal the u.s. and other world powers worked out with iran was awful, provided by them $150 billion, he says, and they can do damage with that. that's the constant message in his speeches. >> that is true. as you know i was in iran late last year and the impressions there as iranians were sort of leading up to their own election was one of fascination. it was also a sense of "that

can't possibly be. the things he's say he can't possibly mean." as he gets closer and closer to the nomination, people are reassessing. there's no question he's influencing not only the republican party but more generally the american public. how they perceive the world. if he's out there on television everyday portraying america as being under siege, if you like, the "us versus them, the whole world is out to get us" that will have an impact on the polls like the one we just saw. >> bobby ghosh, richard quest, thanks very much. fascinating to get world reaction to what's happening in the united states: coming up, mitt romney says donald trump has taken presidential politics to a new low. but is it just part of the american tradition in campaign politics? a member of the kennedy family standing by to fill us in. s equals great rates. it's a fact. kind of like grandkids equals free tech support. oh, look at you, so great to see you!

presidential races that involve dirty tricks. it focuses on the 1960 election between richard nixon and john f. kennedy. >> the wards were coming in strong for kennedy. >> as time goes on, it leaks out that in one black district, there were more votes cast than there were people living in the district. >> earlier, i spoke to kathleen kennedy townsend, the daughter of robert f. kennedy, the chair of correct the record, that's a superpac that supports hillary clinton. i asked her what she thought her father and her uncle, president john f. kennedy, would have thought of this campaign. >> john kennedy was, you know, we're going to get this generation going and we're going to take charge and we're going to, you know, go to the moon, i mean, he sets high standards for himself and for what the country could do. rather than -- as you know, just on the issue of immigration, he

introduced that legislation, which eventually became immigration act of 1964, that said to people around the world, come to the united states. build our country. make it stronger. make it more vibrant. get the best ideas from all over the world. i think my uncle and my father and certainly ted kennedy understood that you could build this country with diversity and with new ideas and new people. and obviously donald trump is appealing to people's fears, in a very sad way. and, you know, i've seen the other side of donald trump. he wasn't always this way. i think it's really unfortunate that he's decided this is the best way to win an election. i think you can win elections in a different mode. that's the way my uncle john kennedy did and that's the way i think my father would have done in 1968. >> i know you were just a little girl back in the 1960 presidential campaign but what, if anything, do you remember about that campaign? >> well, i'm here, wolf, with my

mother, ethel kennedy, and she talked about how, you know, one of the big issues at that point obviously was the anti-catholicism that was rampant and how could you ever elect the first catholic president. and i think john kennedy said, we cannot, you know, decide on the day that somebody's born or baptized that they can't be president of the united states. so he was trying to open up opportunities. but just the opposite of what's going on today. i remember, as well, i think doris has said this about that 1960 campaign, it invited women in through the number of teas that my mother, eunice kennedy shriver, rose kennedy, my grandmother, had all across the country, to say to women, get involved in politics, get involved in supporting john kennedy. so it was an inclusive kind of campaign. not an exclusive campaign that we're seeing today. >> that was kathleen keen did i
