oh, ho, you got it. unbelievable. ted cruz scored big on super saturday and appeals for unity to stop donald trump, but the front runner got his share of victory too and warns that any attempt to split the party will lead to defeat in november. and living a dream that may never be realized. the heart-tugging story of an 8-year-old whose dying wish is to be sheriff for a day. welcome to our viewers here in the united states and around the world. i'm george howell, newsroom
1:01 am
starts right now. a very good day to you. we start this hour with the results of super saturday and another big day on the road to the white house and what a day for ted cruz, the republican candidate gained momentum in the hint that he is the donald trump's strongest challenger. cruz won kansas and maine while trump took kentucky and hillary clinton maintained her lead in louisiana. ted cruz called on republicans to rally around him to take on donald trump. he says his campaign is the party's only hope to win the white house in november, also pointing out a recent straw poll from the major comfortabletive conference known as c-pac where cruz came in on top.
1:02 am
>> by any measure, kansas and maine and the c-pac national conference of conservatives are all very different groups of voters, and to see strong, strong wins across the board is very encouraging, and i think what it represents is republicans coalescing, saying it would be a disaster for donald trump to be our nominee. and we're going to stand behind the strongest conservative in the race. >> donald trump is pushing back, though, against this idea of republicans blocking his path with a third party candidate. he says doing that is just handing the election to hillary clinton. >> if they run a third party or an independent party, if they do that, it will make it impossible for the republican candidate, on the assumption it's me or anybody to win. if that maeans losing, it means
1:03 am
that hillary clinton who does not deserve to run because what see did the e-mails should not be allowed to run. but on the assumption that they did that, it would be impossible for the republican to win, and obviously the independent or third party could not win. so the democrats would have an absolute free run. probably, you wouldn't even campaign, because it would be yes, ma'am possible to win. >> here is a closer look at the numbers. you can see ted cruz edged out donald trump on super saturday. marco rubio fell behind at a distant third and rubio is also far behind in the race at large where trump still carries a lead into several major upcoming contests. for his party, trump is taking greater aem at his two rivals, ted cruz and marco rubio.
1:04 am
he's even your honurging one of drop out entirely. >> donald trump said it was a testament to the organization he's put together and the movement that he's leading in this country. as for ted cruz who also won two states on the super saturday, ted said that the victory was due that he was born in canada. donald trump suggested that marco rubio should drop out. >> i think marco rubio had a very, very bad night. and personally, i call for him to drop out of the race. i think it's time now that he drop out of the race. i really think so. [ applause ] i think it's probably time, you know. i don't think tonight he can get up and rant and rave and oh, he came in third, he came in fourth. every time he comes in third or fourth he says you have to be able to win, and he cannot win, it's time for him to drop out.
1:05 am
>> he said that the occasion scuffles that break out his rallies are due to the fact that the events are larger than those of the other candidates. >> it doesn't seem like rubio will be taking donald trump's advice there, in fact, he is planning on a big win in his home state. >> there will be more delegates awarded in florida than basically every state tonight combined. it's a winner-take-all state. this is a proportional pro sechls every night that we have caucuses like there were tonight in three states we continue to pick up delegates. there are clearly states in which some of my opponents do better than in other states. we understood that. we continue to play the delegate math because we understand this is going to be a very different primary, where the delegates are going to count.
1:06 am
that's why i'm here in poert ue rico. >> trump leads rubio in florida, 44% to 28%. now let's take a closer look at the democratic race, even though bernie sanders may have won more states than his rival on super saturday, hillary clinton still dominate when is it comes to delegates, she has now snagged more than 1100, and bernie sanders has 479. sanders and clinton arrived in the state of mish hish before the super saturday results came in, that is where the democratic primary is to be held on tuesday, and both candidates say they are confident. >> very proud that tonight we won in kansas with a good vote. won in nebraska with a good vote. [ applause ] we think we're going to do well in maine tomorrow. but no matter, we think we're
1:07 am
going to do very well here on tuesday in your great state. but no matter who wins this democratic nomination, i am not the slightest doubt that on our worst day, we will be infinitely better than the republicans on their best day. >> there is no barrier we can't break down if we stand together and work together. that is my pledge to you. i'm asking for and hoping to receive your vote on tuesday. because i know [cheers and applause] if i am your democratic nominee, i will make detroit a central issue in this campaign. [cheers and applause] i will make flint a separate issue in this campaign. i will make michigan's come back a story of resilience and success in this campaign.
1:08 am
>> michigan, flint michigan and workers front and center for these democratic candidates. we get more from yoour senior political correspondent brianna keilar. >> reporter: the contest pea have been in nebraska and louisiana, but both in michigan, attending the michigan democratic party dinner, your clinton congratulated sanders. >> today voters in louisiana and nebraska, i want to congratulate senator sanders, i am thrilled we're adding to our delegate count, but now all eyes turn to
1:09 am
michigan. [cheers and applause] and i can tell you this. we're going to work for every vote. >> reporter: and as secretary clinton referenced there, she and her campaign are stressing their delegate lead over bernie sanders, that he may have picked up more states than her, but she picked up more delegates. they're also stressing that her margin over bernie sanders is bigger than anyone that barack obama had in 2008. implicit in that, they're asserting that bernie sanders cannot best her. brianna keilar, cnn, detroit. >> bernie sanders ramps up the pressure on hillary clinton. ted cruz is emerging as the trump alternative. live from london, jacob is the head of the u.s. and america's program at chatham house. always a pleasure to have you with us. let's talk first about what came
1:10 am
off as a very strong day for ted cruz against donald trump following that brutal debate. and cruz coming on top in the c-pac straw poll. >> this primary has gone through a number of different narratives on the republican side. and the underlying aspect is when is it going to turn into a two-man race? and i think you're starting to see the emergence of a two-man, donald trump/ted cruz race. it's difficult to see how cruz could accumulate the full number of delegates that he would need to win on the first ballot after a republican convention, but you have the possibility of having a floor fight at the convention, which is something that hasn't hammed in modern american history. >> wait a minute, i can hear the rubio camp saying wait a minute. don't count us out.
1:11 am
because marco rubio is determined to stay in this race. what do you see? >> it's difficult to see how rubio could overcome even cruz at this point. they were talking about the number of places they beat cruz without mentioning donald trump. so i really don't see what rubio could do aside from build up to the point where he and cruz could jointly contest trump's nomination at the convention. but it's just difficult to imagine sort of rubio super creeding the delegate count. >> we hear more of cruz taki -- sanders talking about taking on donald trump. what would he have to do? >> he would have to massively expand his votes against non-white parts of the
1:12 am
democratic block. because the states he has won are largely white. that's not true for the up and coming winner-take-all states. he needs to do well in the big democratic strongholds of michigan and florida and california to come. clinton has a very strong delegate lead and strong establishment support. and you're seeing that in her tone where she's talking more about the general election and trying to be accommodating and gracious about sanders rather than attacking him as she did earlier when i think she was a bit more worried about his challenge after new hampshire. >> a few days ago we heard mitt romney come out very strongly against donald trump, making the case there. and we just heard donald trump seemingly concerned about this idea of a third party candidate. he basically says if that were to happen the republicans would hand the election over to the
1:13 am
democrats. what do you make of it? >> i think the idea of a third party candidate is interesting. i think it would be incredibly difficult to do at this point. ballot access laws would mean that a third party candidate at this point would almost certainly have to write a write-in campaign. donald trump can threaten that, because he has almost worldwide name recognition. almost everyone everywhere knows who donald trump is. he probably couldn't win the election, but he could throw it. it's interesting to see who the republicans could put up who would threaten trump. so i'm not sure how plausible that is. >> just quickly here. the view from outside the united states, for hose who are watching this election process take place, about the two front runners, what are the two feelings about donald trump for the republicans and hillary clinton as it stands now for the
1:14 am
democrats? >> there's a lot of concern about trump. people are worried about his bellicose rhetoric, they worry in europe particularly about the extent to which he would maintain traditional american alliance commitments and the extent to which he would swap those out for a more transactional view of america's role in the world. clinton is a more known commodity. >> jacob parakilas, thank you for your insight. >> thank you. and democratic candidates, hillary clinton and bernie sanders will face-off in the debate stage once again in the cnn democratic debate live from flint, michigan. cnn's own anderson cooper will moderate that debate 8:00 sunday on the east coast, 1:00 monday in london only here on cnn. you're watching "cnn

happened to that plane. in malaysia, the mh 370 victims were remembered in an emotional ceremony. >> reporter: family, friends and well-wishers are gathering here today to mark a day of remembrance for the 239 passenger and crew members on board flight mh 370. kuala lumpur is where it took off. >> today's the 6th. and i'm recalling what patrick did on the 6th. then tomorrow i'll remember what he did on the 7th. he went for a safety course. and i'll remember on the 8th. the call coming in and all that. it's a rewinding and playing back. and that's tough, but, you know, i try to stay strong. >> reporter: the family members are also taking this opportunity to launch a petition.
