the university of miami. the u. what a stunner on super tuesday. bernie sanders defying the polls, saying forget it to the pundits, taking michigan in a crazy close race with hillary clinton. monday, the question was whether clinton would seal the deal. now the clinton camp is wondering what's the deal with middle class and independent voters as they struggle to connect. >> so on the republican side, donald trump winning three states. we will talk to donald trump live in our 6:00 hour. stay tuned for that. also ted cruz scored a win as well. marco rubio got crushed last night. what does that mean for the future of his campaign? we have this race covered only the way cnn can. let's begin with john bermen on who won what where and the latest delegate count. >> this was the biggest surprise, bernie sanders with the upset victory in michigan.

you can see how close it was. less than 1%. but enough to be a huge moral victory for bernie sanders. but hillary clinton didn't leave with nothing. she won mississippi, and she won huge, by more than 140,000 votes. that's a big victory, and it has a big impact. it means hillary clinton won more delegates last night. look at the delegate math. hillary clinton with more than 1200. bernie sanders short of $6600. this is without superdelegates, but even without superdelegates, she has the lead. donald trump won mississippi, ted cruz in second. michigan, trump in first place, 36% of the vote. ted cruz edging out john kasich for second. that's significant. ted cruz did notch a victory last night as well. he won the state of idaho. fairly convincing. here, marco rubio below 20%,

below the delegate thresh hold, he gets nothing. in hawaii, a state we called a couple hours ago, donald trump extends his his lead. marco rubio did not pick up a single delegate yesterday, maybe over the next few hours he may pick up one or two in hawaii. next tuesday, florida looms large for the democrats. >> all right, john. big findings, no question. you have smath but you alhave m the momentum of what happened and that's why bermers is getting the big eyes because he shook up the political world by

taking michigan period. how did all the pollsters and prognosticators get this all wrong? let's discuss. tell me what you can tell me, jeff. >> good morning, chris. not only the biggest delegate win but also the biggest symbolic win. it doesn't get more symbolic for democrats than the state of michigan, the home of the auto industry. for the last week or so, this has been a laboratory for the dueling economic messages for the democratic candidates, and voters sided with bernie sanders. i'm here if ohio where secretary clinton was last night. she didn't stick around to find out the results of the primary, but before she left, this is what she had to say. and i'm proud of the campaign

senator sanders and i are running. we have our differences which you can see when we debate, but i'll tell you what, those differences pale in comparison to what's happening on the republican side. >> some democrats believe she is ignoring what's going on in front of her with that democratic race of her own with bernie sanders in michigan. bernie sanders was not expecting this win either. he was in miami last night. he left long before the results were in, and he had to come back and this is what he had to say. >> the political revolution we're talking about is strong in every part of the country. frankly we believe that our strongest areas are yet to happen. >> mathematically speaking, clinton still has a lead, but politically speaking this resets the race. one top democratic adviser told me that secretary clinton didn't as much underestimate bernie

sanders as misunderstand the electorate. that's what is puzzling them as this race goes forward to florida next week and in ohio as well, a key democratic moment for this fight with bernie sanders and hillary clinton. >> absolutely, jeff. thank you very much for breaking all of that down for us. let's look at the numbers behind the michigan upset. what went wrong for hillary clinton? christine romans has a look at deciding factors in the exit polls. >> misunderstood the electorate and michigan is what hillary clinton did. let's look at what issues voters said mattered most. 43% said the economy and jobs. michigan voters are not feeling great about either of those. 81% of voters say they're worried about the economy in michigan. it's all about the auto industry. in the last debate here on cnn, clinton and sanders sparred about work environments, and

specifically trade. 53% of those who say trade takes away american jobs, they say bernie sanders is their guy. among african-american voters, which made up a quarter of the voters last night, hillary clinton won 65% of the vote. that bests bernie sanders but a much narrower margin than michiga michigan. >> all right, very different state, michigan, from mississippi. let's discuss what happens. let's bring back jeff in here and add to the stew journalist and author, david gregory. cnn national political reporter mave resten. brother gregory, when you look at this, a bit of the headline seems to be, oh, she misunderstood the electorate.

is that true or is about the difference in the preference polls and turnout? >> i think turnout is part of it. look, we spend a lot of time looking at the numbers and looking at the states. let's remember one of the big story lines of this race, people are angry with government. they're dissatisfied with government and the effect it has on their lives. if you look at michigan, they are dealing with flint, the auto bailout, also with trade. that impact is something they look to governor alvernment and that's not helping my life, that's hurting my life. people feel they're on the outside of what the economic system is about in terms of delivers for them. i felt hillary clinton's play on the auto industry was a

knockdown, i got that wrong. because his message op trade and working class white voters was much stronger than she had to offer. >> do you believe the issue of trade eclipsed the flint water crisis or that bernie sanders campaigned differently than hillary clinton, casting a wider net. he did. setting up 13 offices around the state. she was looking at the super tuesday contest and not getting as much time in. i think that auto bailout argument didn't work for her. the people in michigan know their history. they know he was on the record in support of the auto bailout. she was arguing because he voted a certain way on the wall street bailout. people didn't buy that. again it shows her difficulties not only with white, working

class voters, but also independent voters. this was an open primary. >> let's get a contrasting point. david gregory, mave reston, they're too smart. what did we hear all day yesterday about the polls? turnout is off. turnout is off. we will bus people, drive people. their preference polls may have been spot on, but the get out the vote effort, the mood wasn't there compared to 2008. that's why you have this yawning gap between that race and this one. >> that's been an issue all along for the clinton campaign here. the numbers for the democratic turnout is down. republican turnout is up because it's such an enthusiastic race. there are concerns inside the clinton camp, organizational

concerns that they were not ready to get out the vote. they were hoping that wayne county, the city of detroit would help them over the edge here. the reality is bernie sanders was winning in college towns and among white voters. the demographic profile of michigan, the challenge for the clinton campaign, it's nearly the same as ohio here, nearly 47%. it's a head scratcher, they don't know why democrats are not as enthused. some say they don't think she's threatened as much, some say they have not tuned into the race. when you attend one of bernie sanders rallies, they were always in the thousands. 10,000 people at michigan state, 6,000 people at the university of rimichigan. hillary clinton in her final rally had a few hundred people.

what did she say? the sooner you can nominate me, i can take on republicans. she may be looking past primary day. >> an environmental factor here, where is the enthusiasm? there's a lot of coverage. a lot of people thought clinton has this wrapped up. even after nevada. this is kind of hers to lose. there's a lot of real enthusiastic supporters from bernie sanders who say wait a minute, not so fast. hold the applause. there's more game here and an important message he has to deliver. >> and they're pumping money into the campaign. this is going to give him so much momentum, again, for those supporters who hope he could bring it , even though mathematically it looks not likely. >> the mood of the country is obvious, it's palatable. it's are you with the mood? are you the agent of the mood?

party. a job well done for donald trump. he was coming off a not so super saturday. he loomed large over many tuesday winning the two big surprises of the night, michigan and mississippi. trump rolled to impressive wins in both states responding to criticism that his support was softening after some of those controversial comments he made over the last week. the gop front-runner laughed off the super pack ads that have been bombards his campaign, as well as his top two rivals, ted cruise and marco rubio. here is what trump had to say last night. >> i want to thank the special interests and lobbyists, because they obviously did something to drive these numbers. >> john kasich did gain some momentum. he was in the neck and neck race for second place in michigan. bolstering his case that he should stay in the race. ted cruz picked up first place

we should grab each other and we should unify the party. nobody will beat us, okay? >> that was donald trump striking a tone of unity after racking up three more big wins last night. he easily won michigan, mississippi and hawaii. this is a sharp contrast to marco rubio who did not win. his campaign may be in freefall. we want to bring in cnn political caller, matt lewis, matt, starting with you, some considered it a tough week for donald trump where his dominance was called into question. last night he was roaring back. how do you see it? >> in terms of momentum, you can't keep him down. donald trump has his mojo back. i would point out if the paradigm is momentum, trump is winning. if the paradigm is stopping trump from getting the 1237

delegates he needs from being the nominee, last flight not a great night. he got 35% of the delegates. he needs to get more than 50% to get to be the nominee. if his goal is to clinch the nomination, he has to do better than he did last night. >> you have to look at him stopping the getting the nomination by two ways, one is the math. let's say he gets to 1100, you going into the convention, how do you not give him the nomination with 1100? >> and what about when romney and others come and in try to wrest the nomination away from him? >> it was the most, the heaviest

barrage we've seen. why did it not work? >> money does not seem to work on donald trump with these attacks. when the anti-trump forces were getting together and talking about what they would throw at him, they said that people had not seen 5% of the research against him yet. it's not working. it's not sticking. that's not what his people care about. they can sway some voters at the edges, who are up decided republicans. but it's just not working on the supporters who will be with him until the end. >> david, let's talk about the rest of the field. cruz won idaho. john kasich had always said he was going to do well in michigan. he came in third. but he was virtually tie with cruz. they got the same amount in michigan of delegates. what do you see for the rest of the field. >> let's start with the most negative, that's rubio. everybody is having something of a moment except marco rubio.

he's the one that the republican party establishment holds up as the one who can beat trump. it's increasingly desperate for him. he's got to put it all on the line in florida. kasich wanted to show strength in the industrial midwest. had a bit of that in michigan last night. cruz is consolidating the anti-trump vote in a way that still has him as the most likely to face trump one-on-one. but i think everybody is still struggling. yes, can they stop trump? to chris' point, that's right. but there will be a lot of supporters if he gets to the convention with 1100 delegates. the math is the math. you have to have 1237, whether you have 1100 or not, you don't have 1237. we've seen in recent history where there's a play for delegations and different moves at the convention because of

being short on the numbers. i keep seeing trump win in ways that are effective. he's bringing in independent voters, winning all over the map. it's really striking. >> what are they failing to do, matt? if you look at it, you never play strength against strength in politics. if you get personal, that's what trump is got at. they are not offering anything better to these disaffected people other than to say you're wrong for liking trump. who do you see having a message that can counter it? >> ted cruz. this is the interesting thing. ted cruz is sending signals that he may try to mess things up for ted cruz in florida. big mistake. she let rubio win florida. ted cruz could come out of a contested convention.

it sounds crazy, but the base would feel like f trump has a lu plurality of delegates but doesn't win the nomination, they will have to turn to ted cruz who speaks to the conservative base and is more palatable to voters. rubio may be better in a general election, but doesn't have that same connection to the zeitgeist of the moment. >> the cruz company is showing its strength here in these pops in the little states that he's winning. really his organization and fervor among some conservatives for him. >> panel, stick around. we'll call upon you throughout the morning. thank you very much for that. >> tomorrow night trump and his rivals will face off in the final debate before the florida and ohio primaries next week. the man, jake tapper, moderating

bernie sanders with the upset win in the state of michigan. 20,000 votes separates them. 1%, 1.5%. a big surprise. but hillary clinton had a big win of her own. look at mississippi. by 140,000 votes, a huge win for her there, which means she got the most delegates last night. let's look at the overall delegate math. just under 600 for bernie sanders. even without superdelegates has a lead which she extended last night. donald trump wins in mississippi. ted cruz in second place there. donald trump wins in the state of michigan. also ted cruz in second place there, edging out john kasich who badly wanted a second place finish for better. ted cruz, he did pick up his own win. he won idaho 45% of the vote. crucially, marco rubio below the

threshold, he gets nothing out of idaho. in the wee hours of the morning, we called hawaii. he won the caucuses there. what does this mean in the delegate math? he extended his lead. 461 delegates. you can see ted cruz at "360". marco rubio hasn't picked up any from last night. that may change. he may get one or two. this all heads into next tuesday. a huge voting day. you can see the big winner take all states. florida, 49. ohio, john kasich's home state, 66. those are both winner take all. it is all proportional on the democratic side. 214 delegates there. illinois, missouri, ohio, and north carolina as well. alisyn, chris. >> okay. thanks so much for that. bernie sanders beating hillary clinton in the michigan primary. that is the big headline. how did the under dog pull off this upset.

jeff zeleny is live in cleveland with us for more. how do you explain this, jeff? >> there aren't more states that are a perfect laboratory than the state of michigan. so symbolic in so many ways. they responded to his call for a political revolution and more anger. voters also said it is perhaps not time for this democratic race to be over. >> a surprise upset over hillary clinton in michigan. >> what we have done is created the kind of momentum that we need to win. >> reporter: vermont senator bernie sanders breathing new life into his campaign. in an expected but sweeping victory in the deep south, clinton easily taking mississippi. >> i want to be the president for the struggling and the striving. for people who have a dream. >> expanding her delegate lead

after a large turnout with african-american voters. >> the political revolution we are talking about is strong in every part of the country. frankly, we believe that our strongest areas are yet to happen. >> secretary clinton projecting an air of confident at a rally in detroit monday night. >> the sooner i could become your nominee, the more i could begin to turn our attention to the republicans. >> but fail to go campaign as aggressively as in other states and looking around the corner to the republican fight ahead may have distracted her campaign as sanders held massive rallies across the state. >> if you come out to vote in michigan on primary day, we are going to win in michigan. >> his support from younger voters and his economic message

paying off in a big way. >> now, if you wonder if bernie sanders expected this victory, here is a sign he did not. he had given a speech in miami. he was back in his hotel room, watching his returns come in with his family when he found out he was winning in michigan. so a few hours he had to come back to an empty small hospital room to address some cameras and reporters. a big surprise for sanders but an even bigger surprise for hillary clinton. >> jeff, stick around. let's bring in other top notch journalists. david gregory. maeve reston here as well. so, david, when we look at this you had the preference poll show hillary clinton 12 to 14 points up. the turnout was low. you saw independents and middleclass people fall into

that disaffected group of voters. do we see that as a tale of the tape? >> it is enthusiasm. it is an open primary that allows not just democrats to come out but independents and others. that's fueling sanders. you know, we talk in elections about the desire for change. change elections. this is something that's much more convulsive. there is more ferment out there. there is a brokenness to our politics and to government. so many want to see all of that turned on its head. here talking about the democrats, you have voters in michigan who really responded well to his message about how trade takes away jobs from people in the country, particularly in this part of the country. this is government not delivering for the people it is supposed to serve. so people are saying no. we are not going to take that anymore. we want something really different.

and i think that part of the enthusiasm gap is what clinton is dealing with. >> trade sounds like it eclipsed the water bailout and the flint water crisis. >> yeah. she made that surprise visit to flint, was setting michigan in her sights. she went so hard with that auto bailout. it seemed so out of tune. the idea that trade is taking away jobs. that has been bernie sanders's message. he gets that. he channels that anger. he understands it. so she may have miscalibrated a little bit. they were telling jeff that last night, perhaps it was awry, didn't go hard enough to the

trade issues. she is still getting some of the blame from her husband's policies on that front, and clearly wasn't able to connect in a way she wanted with the voters. >> if you talk about the studied voter, the auto bailout wouldn't work. if they did the research, they would say she's really talking about t.a.r.p., the bank bill that he hated. the main auto bailout he voted for. david, you could make the point that she didn't get anything wrong. she's not matching the mood of the country. she's not the face of discontent. that's playing bigger than people expected it to in michigan. tell me if i'm wrong, it looks a lot like ohio. >> i think that's right. younger voteers. white working class men. this is an area as well. a warning sign from the general election if she gets that far. so i think that's exactly right.

again, i think all of this talk about her becoming inevitable again, there's a lot of people who were enthusiastically behind bernie sanders. or, to your point, chris, are still in the mood for big time change. they say, wait a minute, not so fast. we're not ready to throw into the towel and cast away our sides. >> if it is a harbinger, we have new polls out nine minutes ago. here's the snapshot of where clinton is verse is us sanders. she gets 63% in ohio to his 33%. is it possible that ohio could have a big surprise in store? >> no doubt what happened in michigan tonight is going to bleed over in ohio. i talked with democrats who are in line with her campaign. we don't believe in surveys, any

polls going into this. the next week on the ground is going to determine who won this conte contest. eight years ago ohio saved her at least for a while. it was the white working class voters that were going to her side. so what her advisers will try to do is sort of get some of that back. david is absolutely right. the anger, the discontent, and the disruption is siding with bernie sanders. you talk to democrat after democrat in the field who say, you know what, if republicans are siding with donald trump, why do we have to fall in line? that is also helping bernie sanders as well here. yes, she has a lead here in the math delegates. but this race is not settled yet. a big concern for the clinton campaign is getting some of the bernie sanders supporters over to her side. she will spend a lot of time

here in ohio between now and next tuesday. and of course that debate tonight so critical she she tries to find a message that still resonates with these voters. >> it happens for another reason as well. look, trump and sanders are very different men. i'm not trying to draw an equation there. but he is a very good look. if she is lucky enough to get the nomination, it is a good test of what she will face in the general. this is a man channeling discontent. she will face that animal in another form. >> this is all a momentum game. she has showed a lot of weakness in terms of energizing and exciting the young voters. you don't see the fervor at the democratic rallies that you do at donald trump rallies. his people are turning out for him. her people are having to drive people to the polls last night. that is a big problem going into the fall. a lot of people will look at these two candidates and say who

last night and dismissing any speculation that the establishment efforts to stop him are working. and the winner take all contests begin next week. let's bring back david gregory and maeve reston and bring in matt lewis. great to have all of you here. david gregory, let's talk about what happened over the past week. some people thought maybe donald trump's dominance was slipping a little bit. last night proved not so. >> not so. he is still rolling. and he's rolling across the divide. whether it's republicans, evangelicals, white working class. as matt pointed out a few minutes ago, the delegate math is still, while certainly in his favor, it doesn't mean he is going to necessarily get of the top by the convention. but he is rolling. and that is the point here. and all the negativity toward him, all the attacks from mitt romney, from others going after his businesses, do seem to miss

the point. which is, one, we can go strength on strength here in terms of rolling in the mud with you. and, two, that a lot of his supporters are not looking to put all the data points together on whether his positions add up and all the rest. what donald trump is saying is he wants change. there is a broken political system, that the government is broken. and that he can change that. there is something fundamentally flawed with our democratic system. that is what is resonating with so many people. so a lot of this opposition against him just hasn't hit the mark because it's more of a feeling that he is connecting with voters on. and i would add there's still more time for the opposition to be mounted. i still think it was late and coming in a sustained way. it has yet to really take hold. >> yeah. >> all right. i'm letting it cinque in because

this is significant. they tried to outtrump trump. marco rubio finally said you have to punch a bully in the nose. the result, is this proof that you have to offer something better to beat donald trump. you can't just say you're wrong to like trump. trump is not who you think he is. >> absolutely. people are outraged they should not be supporting him. you talk to voters at his rallies, he is channelling that anger, that anxiety about the slow growth economy, the fact that all of these people are working two jobs. he has been able to connect with those people. he has been able to connect on the trade issues which is why his win in michigan was so significant. and i think this is just -- the idea that you can sweep in here and dump -- hit him in the head with the opposition research book and all of a sudden have that work. it's just not together to happen. if they were going to try to do a serious takedown with mitt romney, you needed start months

and months ago. the bain attacks. this is all coming so late. donald trump has such a strong connection with the voters that it's really not working. >> how do you explain what happened with marco rubio? he got zero delegates last night? >> if you believe in momentum, rubio is toast. he has momentum. i don't necessary live believe in momentum, though. i think rubio has a really good shot at winning florida. i don't care what the polls say. he is down by double digits. it will really tighten. he has a really good shot in florida. all 99 delegates. then all of a sudden you have momentum. >> here's the latest poll. he's down 16. what do you see that i am not seeing in front of my eyes? >> i think a couple things. first, polling can be wrong. hillary clinton, everybody knew -- >> we saw that many times.

>> that means that the preference has to misstate or exaggerate something that will play out in reality. what would that be here in florida? >> two things come to mind immediately. obviously, he's the home state senator. a senator has an infrastructure, a turnout operation that rubio won't replicate anywhere else other than florida. and the other thing would be we have seen a trend where late deciders break towards rubio and against trump. >> we have a poll that suggests that this hour. this is the new poll. people if florida still deciding, 21% still haven't made up their minds. >> if the patterns, if the trends continue, they will break towards rubio. the other thing, i think rubio has been playing a lot of

gamesheretofor. they were going to admit i need you to help me avoid this humiliating loss. >> he is already making that argument. a vote for john kasich is a vote for donald trump and people are throwing away their vote i think that's maybe not the best tragedy for him. it does sound a little bit desperate. >> humiliation, being humble can help sometimes. but humiliated is different than being humble. 66% in our new numbers show it's time to drop out. which takes us to the original point. >> if you lose florida, you should drop break. this goes to matt's premise. that is not about his weakness. it is about how resolute his support is. who is to say late breakers will go for rubio and not cruz here in florida. >> i can't say.

i don't think any of us really can. matt makes an important point. all of this opposition against trump, the only way trump gets stopped is if there is significant parts of the electorate in any state or a collection of states that say, wait a minute, this is wrong. we know there is a reservoir of feeling for that. look at the new wall street journal poll that suggest both hillary clinton and donald trump have very high negatives. very high negatives. these are really flawed candidates. so there is certainly sentiment out there. and yet we haven't seen enough momentum for rubio. and we see trump is is bringing in disaffected voters who have not voted before. >> all right. david, maeve, matt, thank you very much. tomorrow night we want to let you know all the gop rivals will face off in the final debate before the all important florida and ohio primaries. jack tapper will moderate that tomorrow night 8:30 eastern only

well. the people of mississippi, the people of michigan, i love them. because they fought through that barrage that they had to go through. and to come up with the kind of numbers, not only just winning them but winning in a landslide was so incredible. it made me feel so about. good. >> when you look at the numbers, i know there is a lot of game left to be played. you have about 60% of the party that's up for grabs. the theory is still out there that if the republicans can get behind one of your rivals, they have a chance to take you down. are you concerned about this coalescing maybe now around senator cruz? >> look, they have to do whatever they do. i'm not concerned about anything. i'm just going to keep fighting. we have great states coming up. i've always had a great relationship with florida. it's my second home. i'm there. i employ thousands in the state of florida. i have partners who have done

fantastic job on the ocean, buildings. and if you look at doral, which is so great, mar-a-lago, including the club in jupiter, one of the most successful of all. it's my home. and then gyau to ohio, where i worked for three summers. and i love ohio. i just love ohio. i have so many friends there. paul o'neill, the great yankee, endorsed me last night. i didn't know he was in the room. i said, paul, will you endorse me. he said i love you. i'm going to endorse you. paul is from ohio. you talk a great champion. great. solid as a rock. >> you're not going to get -- >> great hotels of the world. so, i mean, i have great places that we're going to. north carolina i think is going to be fantastic. >> when you look at the polls,

we have a new florida poll out this morning. they show a solid leaped over marco rubio. if you win florida and ohio, do you believe the nominating process is over? >> well, i would say at that point it's pretty tough for anybody to do anything. and i know we have a big lead in florida. and i hear we have a pretty good lead also in polls in ohio. you know, i'm going to ohio. i'm going to florida. i'm in florida right now actually. i'm going to north carolina today. i'm going to be all over the place the next week. so hopefully it will all work out. i would love to see the party come together and unify. chris, we have done something that's never been done. the biggest story of all is the massive turnout the republican party is getting. we're taking from democrats. we're taking from independents. you're reporting on it very well. there's no enthusiasm for hillary. how can you have enthusiasm for

hillary? there is none. >> do you think last night means more about her campaign than even it does about yours? do you think she's in real trouble and why? >> no. i think she'll get the nomination, assuming she is allowed to run. the democrats will make sure nothing happens to her. assuming she is allowed to run legally, i think that, yeah, she'll definitely get the nomination. this is just a bump. but losing michigan is more than a bump in the general. she's not going to bring back trade. michigan has been devastated by bad trade deals. she's in favor of trade deals. she's not going to bring back businesses. she's not going to bring back all the employment that's gone, all the factories that are closed. i have seen them. it's disgusting. what we have done with our trade deals. the guys that talk about free trade deals, they're a bunch of

dopes. i'm more conservative than anybody. when it comes to free trade, let me tell you, unless we have very, very support people representing us as a country, which we don't. we have the opposite. free trade doesn't work. the other countries made better deals with us. we have deficits with every country we deal with. we're losing our factories, our base, our money. and she got beaten in michigan. you have to see michigan you have to see all the clothes fse factories we have in michigan. >> it is disheartening. you have been saying more lately i can be more presidential than anybody. last night you had i really hope we can bring this party together. you have not been perceived as a uniter. is this part of metamorphosis?

you can change the message. >> you know me well. your family knows me well. i am a uniter. but i have to finish off the project. i can't all of a sudden stand there. marco was very, very nasty to me. i have to tell you. he was very nasty to me. i guess he made a mistake. i was more nasty to him. you have to finish off what you have to finish off. i can't say all of a sudden let them make statements. i think the debate tomorrow night will be a softer debate. i do. i believe it will be a softer debate. i hope it will be a softer debate. i go in much more as a uniter. i think the wins were very big ones and very decisive. you look at the numbers i got in michigan. then i had the surprise of hawaii where i did so well.

hawaii such a nice thing. we have a great hotel there. a lot of employees. a lot of people. and it's wonderful. winning so decisively too. >> isn't is there a message in that, mr. trump? >> people don't want to see their feelings rejected by just telling them they're wrong to feel a certain way in this case about donald trump. is it time for you to actually be that change? ironically. many people look at you as the person who set the tone of negativity in this race. is it time for you to say, you know, what enough with the negative. stop attacking me. i'm not going to attack you. we need to unite. we need to be something better. >> chris, i didn't set the tone of negativity. what i did was fought back. they attacked me viciously and i

fought back. don't forget, we started with 17 people. i've been doing this for a while. even that attacked me so far has gone down. wouldn't that be nice as a cup? wouldn't it be nice to have somebody that could do that? >> last question. >> everybody who attacked me viciously, they went down. went down badly. now he goes around like nothing happened and talks horribly about me. i probably could like him. he speaks so horribly about me. it's incredible. i've never seen anything like it. all of these people. here's the thing. we have done something that's the talk of the political world. not even in this country. beyond this country. i've been on the cover of "time" magazine four times. because of this whole situation, it's been amazing. massive people are going out to vote. massive people. this isn't just a little bit. massive numbers of people. and the republican party is getting 65% on average more

people going to the primaries to vote between caucuses. i don't like caucuses, by the way. people walk in. people are grabbing them, fighting. it's the most ridiculous. it is a very bad thing for a democracy. a caucus is not good. very deceiving and very bad. let me just tell you, something is happening that's amazing. we're getting millions and millions of people that nephew voted for. millions of people from the democrats. millions from the independents. honestly, i had such a great talk with paul ryan. he called the other day. he was so great. >> oh, really? >> that's what we should be doing, chris. we should be talking and unifying. because i'll tell you what, with all the new people that have come into the republican party and have come to vote during all of these -- during this last session, it's been incredible. during the primaries, with all

of these people that have come in, we have something that's special. we have something that the democrats can't beat us. i know you have a busy morning but you just said something tantalizing. this is such a big moment as you head into this debate tomorrow night. the party has to make a decisions whether or not if you have the most if they embrace you. one of the biggest pieces of conflict how you deal with the power structure. you got a little sideways with paul ryan, ryan has a big problem if he doesn't do what i say. >> chris that wasn't meant as a threat. they'll lose. it wasn't meant as a threat. >> well, but some people took it that way. give me a taste. why was it a good conversation with paul ryan? >> it was just very conciliatory. we get along well.

i like him a lot. ive respect him a lot i think he respects me. i think he really does respect what i've done. he had it. it's amazing. he said it's amazing. we're bringing in 65% more people than they did four years ago. do you know how many people told me, mr. trump, i've never voted for. they are 50-year-old people, 60-year-old people. they said i've never voted before. they have trump shirts and trump hats. these are people that were never proud enough. they said, i've never had a candidate i have wanted to vote for, mr. trump. and the s and they're great americans. they have never had anybody. we have something is that's going on that's absolutely unique and special. we have millions and millions of people like this. we have massive numbers, chris. and the democrats are down 35%. and we're up 65%. and many of those people come from democrats. now, if i could be -- if we could embrace this moment as a party, we're going to win so easily. we're going to win michigan.

live here on "new day" about his big wins last night. the efforts to stop trump failing. here to weigh in, trump supporter kaley, and matt, the chairman of the american conservative union. great to see both of you here in miami this morning. i know you just heard that interview that chris did with trump. you know, trump talked about the negativity of the race. he said lots of interesting things. he said he has never seen anything as vicious as the attacks against him. he said marco has been very nasty to me." is saying he is orange colored and has small hands, is that really the nastiest that anybody has ever been. what do you think about the aing t back and forth? >> it is really serious policy. like what kind of missile products are we going to buy.

instead, it's down to these personal knocks. the american people, i'll tell you one thing, the reason ted cruz -- if there is an alternative, it is ted cruz. he is staying on the issues. i think that's where the american people are. >> that is new found. no question these guys have been trying to beat trump at his own game. here's what you can order that trump has as an advantage. perception is reality in politics. he had i didn't set the tone of negativity. i was just responding. that is a very arguable proposition. but it doesn't matter. if he is perceiving the need to get away from the negativity before the other guys are, that could explain why last night happened. they're off in what people want right now. they're looking for something better. trump is heading in that direction. they're still behind. >> i think trump is right. by and large you look back he attacked when he has been attacked. he hasn't initiated things. he has responded to things.

that's why this negativity has transpired. you look at every electorate that's voted. last night 80 and higher were angry or dissatisfied with the federal government. these different elect rats are all angry at the establishment and the federal government. donald trump is harnessing that anger and expanding the party too. it is an important point. >> he talked to chris how he wants to be a uniter. he believes he can be a uniter. that is a different tone. he started to pivot over to that tone. what do you think that means for the debate? will we hear that? can trump be a uniter at this point? >> i think there is a transition in front of him. there is the trump that appears with the beautiful family after he wins these states. and his tone is more subdued. it is more calm. he's complimentary to the guys he just killed on the field. and then there is the trump at the rally. it has been very effective. who am i to argue with that?

he's winning. okay. you're in this competition. do i see is a president. i think he was foreshadowing that. he knows he has to come across in these dates. he can be a mag nam muss guy. >> a new match here on the set of "new day" right now. i never thought i would hear you say what you're saying right now. maybe it is emblematic. your party has got to make a decision. >> that's right. >> if this guy keeps rolling, he is your guy. nobody is offering anything better to your people than he is. you're wrong to like trump ain't enough. >> there is a whole movement, never trump. the problem is this. these are voters that are pushing him over to these ws. he's getting wins. when you say i'll never support the guy who is getting the

need to win. >> vermont senator bernie sanders clinching a narrow win, breathing new life into his campaign. in an expected but sweeping victory in the deep south, clinton easily taking mississippi. >> i want to be the president for the struggling and the striving, for people who have a dream. >> expanding her delegate lead of a large turnout with african-american voters. it's state of michigan, sanders's biggest victory yet, keeping the fight alive. >> the political revolution we are talking about is strong in 6th part of the country. and frankly, we believe our strongest areas are yet to happen. >> secretary clinton projecting an air of confident at a rally in detroit just monday night. >> the sooner i could become your nominee, the more i could begin to turn our attention to the republicans. >> but failing to campaign as

aggressive live as in other states and looking to the republican fight ahead may have distracted her campaign. as sanders held rallies on college campuses across the state. >> we're going to win here in michigan. >> his support from younger voters and his economic message paying off in a big way. now, whether hillary clinton underestimated bernie sanders or misread the electorate, it will certainly be discovered and looked into deeply by the clinton campaign. they believe it is not a message as much as unique to michigan turnout problem. they know, though, going into the next week, this is critical for hillary clinton not mathematically because she is ahead in the delegates but politically speaking to show she can win in some of the industrial states where white voteers make up the majority of the electorate. chris and alisyn.

>> okay, jeff, let's dig deeper on that topic. what went wrong for hillary clinton in michigan? the deciding factors in the exit polls. what are you seeing, christine? >> hillary clinton misunderstood the electorate in michigan. that's how her campaign put it. 43% say it is economy and jobs. michigan isn't feeling great about the economy. 81% said they are worried. clinton's attack on the auto bailout simply didn't work. but sanders's attack on past support of trade agreements resonated with voteers. international trade can kills american jobs. bernie sanders tapped into that. 58% of those who say international trade takes away jobs, 58% said bernie sanders is their pick. among african-american vote, a

quarter of the electorate, hillary clinton won 65% of the vote. that is much narrower than in mississippi where she had 85% of the vote, guys. >> christine, thank you very much for going through the numbers. let's bring in deputy communications director at hillary for america, christina shockey. it is good to have you with us this morning. what is your take on the results? >> hi, chris. it's great to be with you. well, you know, we had two contests yesterday. michigan was hard fought. we congratulate senator sanders yesterday. hillary clinton came out last night netting 20 delegates because of her substantial win in mississippi and michigan was closer. we actually feel really good. because she came into yesterday because of her huge wins on super tuesday. we come out last night with 20

more delegates. we are feeling very good about that. we are also feeling very good about the enthusiasm for hillary. more than 1 million people voted last night. she has won with women, african-americans, latinos andatiand asian-pacific islanders. >> some michigan. it is something different. it is not only representative of the next big state, winner take all, ohio, but is representative of a lot of that region of the

country. what do you think was different than expected that accounts for sanders winning and not clinton, which was shown in the polls and still is in the preference polls? >> you know, we knew going in it would be a lot closer than the polls showed. this was a hard-fought race and a must win for senator sanders. his campaign said that repeated. they outspent us. we congratulate him on the win. we feel confident going into next week. hillary will do what hillary does, get out there, do the hard work and try to win every vote. she is going to do everything she can to win. >> so what i'm hearing from you judging the electorate.ss - it comes down to your ability to give it to them. whether it's trump or sanders. yes, they are very different men. but they are tapping into the

same ecos. they're tapping into the same mood in the country. what does hillary clinton need to do more of, better. pick your word. but to tap into the mood and be seen as an agent for it. >> i have to say hillary understands. she spent months and months listening to voters, what they need the next president for them to get ahead and stay ahead. she understands there is a lot of frustration out there. hillary is the candidate talking about how to grow the economy. she believes that you have to put together real plans. it is not enough to talk about what needs to be fixed. but you have to talk about what your real solutions are to people's problems today. she's the candidate out there doing that. you're going to see her do it

tonight on the debate at univision. also, chris, really important to hillary, you have to talk to people how your plans add up. how you are going to pay for it. that's what she is out there doing. >> one more question for you this morning. the idea of the auto bailout. at the time many people read it as a good shot from clinton against sanders. now people looking at it differently. hindsight is always 20/20 when you have a negative outcome. do you think it might have been unfair to paint t.a.r.p. as the auto bailout deal making the case bernie sanders wasn't in favor of the auto pailout. do you think maybe it hurt her in michigan? >> you know, no, i don't think so chris. it is an important piece of information for voters to have

not only in the michigan but upcoming states too. ohio. in january 2009 when barack obama said to stand with him, senator sanders voted no. >> that was the t.a.r.p. vote. that was about the banks. some money for the auto bailout. the real vote had come before. >> but that vote didn't go forward. the vote that actually gave money that saved detroit was the vote in january 2009. and bernie sanders voted against it. so i think that's a fair thing for voters. >> i appreciate you making the case here. >> i have to say, chris, that's just one part of her economic plan. hillary clinton is the candidate out there talking about real plans to solve the problems of

ohio. you know, again, i'm going to ohio. i'm in florida right now actually. i'm going to north carolina today. i'm going to be all over the place the next week. i would love to see the party come together and unify. chris, we have done something that's never been done. the big story is the massive turnout the republican party is getting. we're taking from democrats. we're taking from the independents. there is no enthusiasm for hillary. how can you have enthusiasm for hillary? there is none. >> do you think that last night means more about her campaign than even it does about yours? do you think she's in real trouble and why? >> no. i think she will get the nomination, assuming she is allowed to run. which she probably will because democrats will make sure nothing happens to her. assuming she is allowed to run

legally, i think, yeah, she will definitely get the nomination. this is just a bump. but losing michigan is more than a bump in the general. it says the people don't want her. she is not going to bring back trade. michigan has been devastated by bad trade deals. she's not going to bring back businesses, aulll the factories that are closed.

well, look, donald trump is not exaggerating. and that's saying something. when he charges that the gop establishment, the candidates have been coming at him with everything. what would they think would happen? approximate by going negative they would change the race. it hasn't happened. let's talk to the communications director for the superpac tim miller. tim, you may remember, served as communications director. you spent a ton of money. you spent a tone of money here in florida. saying trump stinks and you're wrong to like trump didn't work last night. may have worked against people.

>> those were states that were always going to be good for donald trump. >> money was spent. maybe not by you. >> there wasn't a whole hot of anti-trump money in michigan or mississippi. the only money we spent was in idaho. not a big amount. we have been focusing our attention on march 15th, florida, illinois, ohio, missouri, north carolina. those are the big delegate states. we are seeing trump's numbers softening and softening nationally. the only money we spent was idaho. he lost big last night. donald trump is trying to make himself seem inevitable. the numbers don't bear that out >> we have the new cnn/orc polls. let's just look at florida as an example. trump has 40%. rubio, who has always said his big play is florida, he expects to win it. he promises to win it, he's at 24%. cruz, 19%. kasich, 5%. >> a ton of money spent here. >> robocalls, mailers, tv ads.

what evidence do you have that it is not working? >> it is about a five-point race between trump and rubio. if you look at ohio, illinois, we're seeing trump losing in illinois, by the way. really close race in ohio. look at the number from the poll that came out in the states that are remaining. if you look at all the states. in a head to head race, ted cruz plus 13. they didn't test kasich versus trump. i expect kasich would be ahead as well. this is not like mitt romney, george w. bush. they were getting 60%, 70% in head to head. donald trump is opposed by over half the party. he had an okay night last night. he had a really bad weekend. we have a quick memory -- amnesia. he lost kansas. upset in maine. he is not nearly as strong a position as he wants you to think. >> winner take all the next states coming up.

that means if he wins by 2%, 3%, he gets all the delegates. as the math starts to fall in his tpaeuf, what do you do? >> one of cruz, kasich, rubio is able to gain momentum and get a plurality of the delegates. >> explain that. >> to beat donald trump, to have more. >> you're not saying someone else can get to 1,237. >> i think someone else could. it is more than likely someone beats donald trump and has the most delegates, not 1,237. the other thing is a fractured race. nobody gets to 1,237. then we go to cleveland. there's a lot of stuff these voters haven't learned about donald trump. let's talk about that. his supporters have heard it all. they don't care. they don't care he was married

three times. they don't care some of his businesses may have gone bankrupt. they have rejected that. >> if they didn't care why was he up during his press conference hauging his failed infomercial products. the trump steaks that taste worst than hot dogs. trump water that tastes like paint. he tried to build trump tampa. total failure. people, regular people, left with $50,000 they had to eat while donald trump used the bankruptcy laws to enrich himself. >> this is testimonials. people say they have somehow been disadvantaged. >> they don't say it. they have been. the trump university people we have heard about. more examples from atlantic city. the trump hotels down here. his hotel failed. his apartment building failed. donald trump paid himself. he didn't pay the regular people. >> they already have high negatives on trump anywhere you look at it.

>> astronomically high. >> don't you think it speaks to the fact that people believe he want they want something better. he is tapping into that. isn't the only way to beat it is to off something better, instead of beating him down. >> no. he was 29 favorable. bashar al assad's negatives are 60%. putin's negatives are there. the general public does not like him. republican party, of half still do not like him. ted cruz, marco, john kasich, they have to make a case for themselves. what we need to do is educate voters how donald trump left regular people holding the bag to enrich himself. hs questionable history with res. yesterday a high roller in atlantic city was a racist. so he kept black people away from his table.

i don't think we'll all be surprised if he drops out. look at a state like mississippi where marco rubio only got 5% of the vote. that's obviously devastating to their kpaeup. on the positive side, everybody is coming around. our lead keeps growing. the message is getting out. he is the uniter. he is going to do great things for america. people are realizing that and voting in kind. >> marco rubio, to your point, got zero delegates last night. he has always he is going to win florida. that is still his plan. he has always had a lot of eggs in the florida basket. are you suggesting he should get out before florida? >> you know, i know there are people saying that he should. and it comes down to this in politics. as app elected official i can tell you if he gets out before florida, he can chalk up a loss to, well, i got out before so that's why i lost. and he salvage a political

future. but if he stays in through florida and loses, as the polls show he will, that will be very damaging to his political future. if you're not able to win over the voters which elected you to remember them. if they don't have faith in you, that could be a big impact. i personally believe he will drop out before florida to save his political future, to save face. we will see what happens in the coming days. >> the latest poll out this morning, how republicans feel in florida. donald trump has 40%. marco rubio 16 points behind. kasich 5%. polls have been misleading and wrong throughout this entire thing. i want to get back to something he told chris this morning in our interview with him. he talked about how he wants to be a uniter. that comes as a surprise to his

critics. in fact, they don't believe it's possible for donald trump. what do you think is the difference in rhetoric moving forward at the debate thursday night? how will that sound different? >> you know, keep in mind, and i watch the previous person you had on. everybody i have seen come on and say negative things about donald trump is being paid to do so. a lot of politics has to do with the money. everybody that comes on saying negative things is working for a pac or a campaign where they are making money to say bad things about him. and when you contrast that with myself, i have been out stumping for donald trump, heck, almost a year. i was out stumping before he even ran saying this would be the perfect person and we have to get behind him. and i've never been paid a penny. this is something i'm doing because i know he will be the very best we can do for our country to bring us back. i look at it like that. i know politics in the end

usually comes down to money. it's one of the sick realities of this. but that's what i see. the ney sayers. of course they're going to say that. the longer they can convince donors there is a chance to beat him and he's not the right guy, the guys will continue to write checks to them. he is the only one self-funding, standing up to the special interests. that's one thing the american public is sick of. the special interest and the money control the game so much. that's what donald trump, one of the things he represents is that he can win it back for the people. so i think that's going to continue. >> hey -- >> that's why he is out in florida. >> hey, jeff, if donald trump were to become the nominee, do you think there is any chance after this bruising primary battle with all the rhetoric against his rivals that he would ever choose one of these current rivals as his vp pick? >> donald trump is a very

people. you had 200,000 people turn out. this is in mississippi for our candidates. there is a proportional argument to make. there is an intense, chaotic, reality tv show playing out on the republican side. you know, it's kind of like a train wreck. you know you shouldn't watch. there is a certain element to that. when we have a nominee on both sides of the aisle, i'm very confident we will have a united party. our candidates have been not only civil but complimentary of one another. the republican field has been hurling insults and talking about size of hands and theirmanhood and spray tans. i have colleagues on the republican side in congress freaking out about the possibility of donald trump being their nominee, and for good reason. we are going to tie 6th single

republican race, every republican on the margins do they believe we should ban an entire religion from this country? should we kick 11 million people simply here to make a better way for themselves? do they agree we shouldn't disavow david duke or the kkk? these are all things that their front-runner, the guys hurdling towards their nomination is espousing. we are going to be asking, do you support your nominee? if you do, then you obviously support what he stands for. >> well, look, there is no question they want different, they want better. isn't that the story of michigan. polls were wrong. they had hillary clinton up 10, 12, 14 depending which outlet you want to look at. and then the outcome was different. isn't this about capturing the mood of the country and understanding how to harness the disaffection. >> as alisyn has said this

morning, the polls are all of the place. i'm on the ballot 6th two years. if you run your election, run your campaign based on what the polling is saying, you're going to have a real problem. you run your race, focus on the issues that you are trying to make sure you can capture the hearts and mind of voters on. and you focus on getting your folks to the polls. both candidates did a great job with wr th where they split the two states. they are speaking to the issues that matter to the voters when it comes to the general election. making we can shrink the income in equality gap. ensuring you have a fair shot to get a good education. it's not going to cost you so much all the way into your later years. you can keep your health care. it all would be rolled back by any one of the republicans. >> what do you see in bernie sanders being so competitive with secretary hillary clinton?

none of you would have predicted his strength at this point in his race. many say he is a reflection of the mood of the country and that he is challenging the status quo within your own party and that's why he is doing so he will. >> i want to be careful because i have a it's fantastic that bernie sanders and hillary clinton have ignited excitement in groups of voters that would not normally come to the polls. that is fantastic for us that bernie sanders has really motivated and fired up young voters, millennial voters, who really are focused less on party and more on the issues that matter. and at the end of the day when the supporters for both candidates come together to support or nominee the last thing in the world they are going to do is support donald trump or ted cruz or -- marco rubio's pretty much done. but we'll see. you can't be a repetitive

a big night for donald trump. picking up three more states. so is trump's road to victory now more secure? or does he still face many hurdles along the way? joining us to discuss is steve forbes, former presidential candidate in 1996 and 2000. also chairman and editor in chief of forbes media. good morning. >> good morning. >> so many headlines. on the gop side, what surprised you the most. >> really wasn't a surprise. the big surprise in michigan was not that donald trump won. really in michigan, the third place finish of john kasich.

cruz did very little in michigan and yet he pulled a second place. so it really has come down to a position no one would have predicted a few months ago. cruz versus donald trump. and i think what you are going to see now is all of the attacks on donald trump that will continue. this is the nfl. when you are the front runner you will get bashed but what cruz has to do now especially, is start up front with positive economic messages how he's going to improve this country. he's got an interesting flat tax plan. he's got put that out there and lead with that. i just wrote "reviving america" detailing big issues these should be hitting. not enough to repeal obamacare. tell the voters how your plan is going to make the hospitals stay more pleasant and the patients will get control. tell how you get cred markets,

lead with that stuff. you have to have a positive alternative and cruz must do it or he will go down. >> that is interesting because that is a different tact certainly than what we've seen the candidates taking. they have taken the more negative tact and going after donald trump and trying to attack him. in fact marco rubio spent better part of the last two weeks talking about how donald trump is not going to make america great. he's going make it orange. he talked about the size of his hands. so what do you think we've seen happen with marco rubio. do you think there is any way that he comes back here in florida? or do you think his campaign is virtually over. >> it is going to take a meerk toll revive that campaign. he never put the beef behind the message. so it was like saying you have a great building but what is behind the facade. he never provided that in a convincing way. so yes, trump is going to get

attacked. his negatives are high but those negatives alone aren't going to sink him in the primaries. you have to have something positive and this gives trump an opportunity too to up his game in terms of positive. we know where he stands on certain issue. but he's got a tax plan. start showing that a that is going to impact the typical american. people have to have a take away where they can say okay. this is going to improve the country in my life. i'll take a chance on that candidate. and amazingly so far t untrumps you might call them really haven't done that effectively yet. >> i want your comment on what's happening on the other side of the aisle as whole. that was a big upset last night where bernie sanders won and i think it does have relevance to what's playing on both i sides of the aisle. pundits believe he won because he talked trade. so once again working it back to the economy. is that the overarching issue for voters? >> well trade has become an

issue because the academy has be -- economy has been slow. 90% were part-time. hourly wages are starting to decline again. so bernie sanders is appealing to that. people think he's honest. they may not like his views but they think this guy is honest. different from the establishment. and you are right. last night's victory by bernie sanders, one of the biggest upsets not only in this season but any season. everyone expected. he expected he was going to get slaughtered by 20 points, which is why he left the state early. so he pulled off a big victory. and that tells people again, if you want to counter bernie sanders, even though he's behind on the delegate count, that doesn't matter. you have to beat substance with substance. bernie has put something on the table. trump has put something on the table. the other candidates have to put

campaign a boost in the contests ahead next week. >> on the gop side, donald trump with three big wins. you will hear from him later this hour. and ted cruz with a win out west. marco rubio got no delegates whatsoever last night. and with florida's make or break primary approaching. so we have this race covered the way only cnn can. cnn anchor john berman has who won and ware and the latest count. tell us john. >> this is still surprising to see. look what happened in michigan. the democratic primary there. the big surprise bernie sanders inching out hillary clinton. that's a big upset. but hillary clinton did have a big win of her own. it happened in mississippi. look at the numbers here. staggering difference. 82% of the vote. what did that mean? even with the upset in michigan, with the loss there, hillary clinton won more delegates last night. she has over 1200. bernie sanders a little less

than 600. even without super delegates she has a 200 delegate lead or so. let's look at the republican race right now in mississippi. donald trump out front there. ted cruz in second place. same story in michigan. a little surprise that ted cruz i inched out john kasich. kasich badly wanted sec place there or better. and ted cruz won in idaho. the big news here marco rubio underneath the 20% threshold. no delegates in idaho. the last race we called was in hawaii in the wee hours of the morning. donald trump won the delegates there. he won the most delegates last night, expanded his lead. ted cruz a hundred behind him. marco rubio as of now gained no delegates yesterday. this is one week in advance of the big contest next tuesday. the winner take all contest for the republicans in florida.

ohio. and on the democratic side proportional delegates there, but still, florida, ohio, missouri, indiana. huge states for the democrats next week. >> the big difference is for the republicans we see winner take all. democrats staying proportional. so that race has a different dynamic as well. what happened? let's take a look. jeff zeleny live in cleveland with more. good morning. >> there are four words right now in the facebook book page of bernie sanders "do not underestimate us." that is the message this morning. i can tell you the clinton campaign is no longer underestimating bernie sanders, at least his message and how it appeals to some white working class voters that are key here as this race moves along to ohio and other states. but last night that win in

michigan was by independent voters and they went overwhelmingly for bernie sanders. that is a concern for the clinton campaign. but last night she did not have much to say about her michigan or mississippi win. she was still talking about the longer race ahead. >> i'm proud of the campaign that senator sanders and i are running. we have our differences which you can see when we debate. but i'll tell you what, those differences pale in comparison to what's happening on the republican side. >> but now there are some democrats wondering if hillary clinton has been spending too much time looking ahead, focusing on the republicans here as opposed to bernie sanders, the matter at hand. now for his part bernie sanders was not expecting a win in michigan at all. he was in miami last night. gave a speech early and then went to his hotel room to retire and watch the results come in. he had to come back out and make a statement. listen to what he said. >> the political revolution that we are talking about is strong

in every part of the country. and frankly, we believe that our strongest areas are yet to happen. we're going to do very, very well in the west coast and other parts of this country. >> now no doubt this was a huge shot in the arm for the sanders campaign. mathematically speaking hillary clinton still holds a commanding lead in delegates and this next period here as they debate tonight in miami and then go through into the next set of contest. ohio now becomes the central battle ground. if he's able to repeat in ohio that is a key moment but she still holds so many advantages in the long game. and that is whether this democratic race is, alisyn, a very long game. >> jeff, that is such a funny image of bernie sanders turning in for the night and then being surprised by his own win and having to come back out. thanks so much for all of that background. now as for the republicans donald trump with three wins

last night. cruz got one and rubio is looking for oxygen after picking up zero delegates. jim acosta joins us with more. tell us what happened on that side, jim. >> yeah alisyn, the dwlasz of trump water is half full not half empty this morning. donald trump answered critics with big wins in hawaii, mississippi and michigan. he thanked the super packs for bombarding his campaign with negative ads. trump attacked his top rival, ted cruz and marco rubio for failing to slow his momentum. cruz won the state of idaho and edged out john kasich in michigan for second place. it was rubio who struggled the most last night. but he is vowing to fight on. here is what he had to say last night. >> i believe with all my heart that the winner of the florida primary next tuesday will be the nominee of the republican party. we can win this election and we

will. i need your help next tuesday because we're not just going to win the florida primary, we are going to win florida in november -- >> now despite what happened last night a rubio aide tells me this morning they will soldier on, insisting the florida senator remains focused on winning his home state. that's been the strategy all along since the beginning of this month. kasich is pricking a victory in his home state of ohio. that's potentially a better possibility at this point, if you look at the latest cnn orc polling. those two state, florida and ohio, north carolina, but if they can't do it in ohio and florida. it may be over. >> really makes you wonder what about the rubio team knows about the numbers in florida the way they're talking. a very interesting state. it breaks down into three very

different races here. a little mystery still. here is now what's known. "new day" was first to speak with donald trump following his big wins last night and he had surprising things to say. unity. reaching out to paul ryan. and a prediction about hillary clinton. here is a taste. >> well i would say at that point it's pretty tough more anybody to do anything. and i know we have a big lead in florida. and i hear we have a pretty good lead also in polls in ohio. and, you know, again i'm going ohio, i'm going to florida. i'm in florida right now actually. i'm going to north carolina today. i'm going to be all over the place the next week. hopefully it will all work out. i would love to see the party come together and unify. you know, we've done something that's never been done. we're taking from the democrats. we're taking from independents and you are reporting on it really well. but the democrats are down 35%.

there is no enthusiasm for hillary. how can you have enthusiasm for hillary? there is none -- >> do you think that last night means more about her campaign than even it does about yours? do you think she's in real trouble? and why? >> i think she'll get the nomination. assuming she's allowed to run which she probably will be because the democrats will make sure nothing happens to her. asuming she's allowed to run legally i think yeah she'll definitely get the nomination. this was just a bump. but losing michigan is more than a bump in the general because it says the people don't want her. she's not going to bring back trade. michigan's been devastated by bad trade and she's not going to bring back trade or businesses. she's not going to bring back all of the employment that's gone. all of the factories that are closed. i've seen those factories and it's disgusting to look. >> you have been saying more lately you can be more

presidential. i can be more presidential than anybody. and last night you said i really hope we can bring this party together. you have not been perceived as a uniter. this part of this met more fis of yours meta mor fisz. are you going to change message? >> well i am a uniter chris. you know me well and your family knows me well. i am a uniter. but i have to finish off the project. you know, i can't all of a sudden stand there and let people -- you know, marco was very very nasty to me. he was very very nasty to me. and i guess he made a mistake. because i was more nasty to him. you have to finish off what you have to finish off. i can't say all of a sudden, you know, let them make statements. i do think this. i think the debate tomorrow night will be a softer debate. i hope it is going to be a

softer debate. i can tell you i go in much more as the a uniter. i think the wins last night were very very big wins and very very decisive wins. >> people look at you as the person who set the tone as the negativity in this race. >> i didn't set the tone of negativity. what i did was i fought back. they attacked me viciously and i fought back. and don't forget we started with 17 people. so, you know, i've been doing this now for a while. and the nice part is everybody that's attacked me so far has gone down. wouldn't that be nice for our country because we don't win anymore as the country. so wouldn't that be nice to have somebody that can do that. we're getting millions and millions of people that have never voted before. millions of people from the democrats. millions of people from the independents. and honestly i had such a great talk with paul ryan, he called the other day. he was so great. >> give me a taste. why was it a good conversation with paul ryan.

>> it was just very conciliatory. we get along well. i like him a lot. i think he really does respect what i've done. i mean he said it. it he said it's amazing. they are talk eighty e all over the world. we're bringing in 65% more people than four years ago. do you know how many people told me mr. trump i've never voted before and i'm voted for you. and they have trump shirts and trump hats and these with people that were never proud enough or -- they said i've never had a candidate that i've wanted to vote for mr. trump. they are great americans and they have never voted because they never had anybody they want -- we have something going on that's absolutely unique special. we have millions and millions of people like this, chris. we have massive numbers, chris. >> if that's true, that last statement. it could make donald trump very tough to beat, not just in the primary but in a general. let's get perpetrative from ohio

senat senator. so does it a pass the smell test about mutually respect and that donald trump is going to be a unifier for your party. >> i'm sewer he did have that conversation with paul ryan or he wouldn't have said it. there is a lot more enthusiasm on the republican side. some were independents but the fact is there is more enthusiasm on our side. this is happening not just in michigan but all the states. john kasich had a surge last night. you probably saw fourth in the polls two weeks ago. last night a virtual second place. 17 delegates to donald trump's 25. i'll be in ohio with john this

weekend. 66 delegates there. it is a big state. winner take all. i'm excited on what's going to happen in ohio and i think it will start to build the kasich momentum. john the is the right guy for the country. >> the governor has been putting his eggs in that basket but you are right. he has seen a pop in the polls recently. some say he's taking from rubio. some say he's getting his own traction. why do you believe kasich is the right man for the country better than donald trump despite the polls. >> he's got an incredible record of accomplishment. and it is not just here in washington where he ambulanced the budget. in ohio he inherited a mess. our employment was above the national average. now below. he's added 400,000 jobs. took an $8 billion deficit, unprecedented in ohio and turned it around so we have a surplus.

and he did it by bringing people together. i this that is what voters are looking for is not just a good speech but what have you done? and kasich has an incredible record. >> as donald trump likes to say, yeah but they struck oil in ohio and that's really is what's fueled it. >> that was a small part of it. and certainly a small part now with the price of oil and natural gas. >> well that is truth. things have changed since the original boon in ohio. when you look at why donald trump is doing well what that means for governor kasich. wages aren't going up. people don't see the chances for opportunity. they don't see the reason for optimism abroad when they look at the war on terror. do you think governor kasich can aavoid being swept up in those

problems? >> absolutely this is a guy who's addressed these problems. and i totally agree i think there is a lot of anxiety and anger out there and it's understandable that's why bernie sanders is catching on. but the question is what do you do about it? and kasich is talk about the first hundred days the kind of tax reform and regulatory relief and getting the country back on track. these are the things people know works in place likes ohio and that is how we've made progress in ohio. i think we need politicians willing to talk about the the issues and the smefks. and also understand how to get things done. one of the things driving this for donald trump is he's a guy they think can get things done. and i think their frustration with the granddaughter locke in d.c. is part of this.idlock in part of this. >> governor kasich, yes he stayed above the fray, maybe too

much. maybe he needs to address the tone and make it part of his message to people. what is your thought? >> we'll i've been with him at town hall meetings. talk about what's wrong. he's not hesitant to talk about that. but what he does say is we've got to work together. and he's shown he can bring people together to solve these problems. he's always been a reformer and has a reformer's heart and that's what people are looking for. but win ohio and i think the momentum builds from there. >> one quick mention of an issue that matters. it was brought up in new hampshire. it is going to come up in a different way in ohio. this country is dealing with the problem of drugs in a way that very few understand. you do. what do you want people to know. >> it is an issue addressed at every one of the town hall meetings because people ask questions. i had a meeting and asked how many have been effected by the heroin and precipitation drug

abuse and everyone has been affected by it. we have legislation on the floor of the senate right. now bipartisan. the comprehensive diction and recovery act and begin to reverse the tide of this addiction. heroin has crept into all of our communities and this is an opportunity to turn that around and begin to get people's lives back together. >> a righteous cause to be sure. senator portman, as you know many in the community who are fighting addiction say the medicine cabinet is the new drug dealer for people. >> take care. >> appreciate it, senator. thank you. so tomorrow night we'll see the gop rivals face-off right here, before florida. that is where we are. you then have this state and ohio next week. winner take all on the gop side. jake tapper is going to moderate the cnn republican debate tomorrow night 8:30 eastern only

20, 25 points down a few days ago. who reputed the pundits who said that bernie sanders was not going anywhere. >> bernie sanders, beating hillary clinton in the michigan primary. the results surprising essentially everyone. what the sanders camp next move? joining us is jeff weaver. great to have you here. >> great to be here. >> graulss on last night. >> thank you. >> the polls and the pundits got it wrong but obviously you have internal polling you don't share with the public. were you surprised by what happened? >> well i made a private prediction to some reporters yesterday that it was going to be in the negative 7 to plus 2 range so i'm feeling pretty good today actually. >> but you are the only person who had that kind of polling. everybody thought hillary clinton was going to run away with it. >> that's not true. and the fact that the secretary spent so much time in michigan i think demonstrated the fact they thought this was closing.

>> let's talk how. what did he do so good in michigan. >> i think his clear message on the trade policies. michigan is a state that's been devastated by bad trade deals. he's opposed every one and secretary clinton has supported almost every one. so people in michigan know what the real impact of that this. >> and we have exit polls that suggest just that. the question was trade with other countries takes away u.s. jobs. the people who believe that, 58% of them voted for bernie sanders. 41 for clinton. so is that really it? is this coming down to -- this election because there is something similar and i know you will bristle at this. between bernie sanders and donald trump in their message, they are seizing on something. and they are capturing some feeling of the electorate and the country. what do you think the similarity is? >> well i don't think there is that much similarity. do think there is a lot of disgust with establishment politics and establishment economics. so many are hurting and working

full time, living in poverty. others working full time and just can't get buy. so there is really a lot of anger out there. these trade deals, for instance, in states that were industrial states devastated. we did much better in the african american community than we've done elsewhere. that's because michigan used to have a thriving industrial class and schools are falling apart because the tax base is all gone. flint michigan, eleven factories have left because of the trade deals. people want change. >> the fact that unemployment is down and gas prices are down and stock market is up you are basically saying and bernie sanders is banking on that doesn't translate to a large swath of the country. >> because most people aren't benefitting from that. wages are down. stagnant. almost all new wealth and income goes to the top 1%.

and wall street is up but wall street is all wealthy people. so they look at how great things are and then their own personal life and can't send kids to college and my co-pays are up and people don't feel it in the real lives. >> there are two ways to see what happens in michigan and two ways to look at everything happens are if bernie sanders. and there is moesmt and math. he clearly has the momentum. excitement around the campaign and we see him winning in places unexpected but then the math. that was not a winner take all state. they divided up the delegates. and hillary clinton is still something like 200 delegates ahead. >> right. >> while the momentum may work for your side, the math does. >> there is another m, which is the map. and the way the map was set up this year there are a lot of states on the front end that benefit hillary clinton. first a lady in arkansas over a

decade and she does very well in the south. once you get outside the south, you know, her wins, iowa by a fraction. massachusetts by a fraction. she loses michigan. she's having a difficult time competing outside the south and there are almost no more southern states so the second half is much more favorable for bernie sanders. winning by double digits all over the country in some states by 30 points like kansas and maine. >> so what do you think is going to happen in ohio. >> >> well you will see. seven days is a long time but many of the issues that resonated in michigan with democrats there are going to resonate in ohio. the auto industry was also severely damaged. a lot of people in ohio. same in illinois. and people in north carolina once had a thriving furniture

industry and others and that's all gone overseas. >> what's the message tonight going to be? >> bernie sanders is pretty consistent in his messaging and i think you are going hear him emphasize some of the difference that he's been pointing out between himself and the secretary and i think he's going to talk about his agenda. the more people see him and hear him. we saw that in michigan. 230i7b9s down, then he wins. the more people know and meet him and learn about him, the more they want to support him. >> hillary clinton and bernie sanders do face off tonight in their next debate here in miami. cnn will simulcast. the univision democratic presidential debate. 9:00 p.m. eastern. tune in for that. >> could not be timed any better than that. donald trump keeps on rolling. the north, the south. all of these different demographics. so what did it mean with the economy this time around. we have more on that. and a reaction to our trump interview. next.

decisive wins in three very different states last night. what is behind his wide-ranging appeal? let's turn to christine romans to break down the exit polls. >> the appeal comes from anxious angry voters who think the billionaire business can save them. falling home price, gas, let's start in mississippi. where 80% say they are very worried about the economy. mississippi has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. it is almost 7%. those very worried voters. they broke decisively for donald trump. ted cruz was a distant second. let's go to michigan. specifically deep concerns over years of trade deals that voters in michigan believe kill american jobs. trump grabbed 42% of those voters. trump and bernie sanders on the democratic side both have owned this subject on the stump.

trump has blasted companies like ford and apple for manufacturing products outside the united states to huge applause from crowds even though some of trump's products are made in china. an ideology, cruz country long seen as conservative or evangelical. that was not the story in mississippi. where born again or evangelical christians again supported donald trump. same category in michigan, also beat out ted cruz. you can ski all of these overlapping threads here. on display last night more than anything the overlap between sanders and trump, exit polls showing this yearning, antitrade, antiestablishment, only an outsider can fix it. you don't tell me the economy is good because i don't think it is good. >> we want to dive in more and talk about those economic factors. here to weigh in are our cnn political commentator and trump

supporters kayleigh mcenany. and chairman of the conservative union. unemployment down. yet anxiety up and somehow sanders and trump seem to be the people who can best capitalize on that. >> yes. and i think that can be explained by one statistic. when you look at the income bracket and you look at the bottom half of the income bracket. real family income has not increased since 1960. people's wages have not gone up. that's why you see sanders appeal so i broadly. trump appeal so broadly. people might still have jobs but wages are depressd. they trust trump and they trust sanders because they are anti trade. it is becoming increasingly a huge issueso the space it seems to be for people in your part is specifically the gop, is to say how they will fix it in a way that is superior to what trump is selling. that is not what they are doing though. what they are doing is they are

undermining the confidence in trump or trying to do that. is that a mistake? and what is the right remedy? >> you know, i'm okay. they are right to take trump head on. although on taxes and trade he's been very specific. but they are right to go after him on that. i think the problem they have here is this. which is trump is talking to voters. he's connecting to people. i've been talking to people on campus who are talking how he's connecting to them and that is what politics is. part math, poll, demographics. it is part romance. part charm. part appealing to somebody's heart. we can talk about the unemployment rate being low. the number of jobs out there is lowest since jimmy carter. there is huge angst out there. will america lead on the economy? on the world stage? it is because miles per hours are worried that they are turning to the idea of a donald trump as their candidate. >> i want to ask about that. everything we just had bernie

sanders campaign manager on jeff weaver who talked about the issues he thinks are resonating most. the black middle class in detroit and beyond in michigan that's suffered. the prohibitive cost of college has been a big theme for bernie sanders and of course the low paying jobs. so what is it about donald trump other than the fact that he is personally successful. he's a billionaire. so are people just like give me some of that magic custodust? >> i think there is something to that. people trust he can create jobs. i also think there is something to the point of delegation. he knows how to choose the right people. does he have every policy detail or the twelve point plan? maybe not. but he has the vision and the ability to choose great people to implement that vision. >> these people that run for office. e we all love that in america.

we're a problem when business people actually do get involved with politics, it is incredibly frustrating for them. when you are the ceo you get to dictate. when you are the president you share powers. >> bureaucracy ends up killing them. >> but donald trump has basically given the impression he doesn't need to deal with that. >> when he gets there, he will. >> but he is a deal maker and that is something that will translate i think to the hill. he knows how to set the bargain here and negotiate down and that deal-making ability translates in a congressional setting i think. >> aspirationing, optimistic statement. and i'm not being cynical. it is true if you want it to be. however what is different between business and politics? here is the answer to my own question. at a table we each have leverage and something we want and we're looking to move forward with that with something. doesn't happen in politics all the time. a zero sum game is acceptable. the momentum being i'm happy not getting this done just to stop
