the defensive. >> how come we're the bad people all the time. >> as raucous clashes continue to overshadow the front runner's campaign events. >> no respect for the flag whatsoever. and partner has a ku klux klan hat on. and you have an african-american man got in sensed and he started hitting the people. >> the republican front-runner trying to explain chaos at his rally saturday night. >> get him out of here. >> while being escorted out, this protester caught on camera getting sucker-punched and repeatedly punched and kicked by a trump supporter who was arrested. >> what happened is a direct result of trump's methods, lies and the angry rhetoric and violent rhetoric he is displaying on his campaign. >> a woman behind him escorted

out wearing a kkk hoodie. the two don't know each other. campaign manager in a verbal confrontation with another protester seeing in this video yanking the men's shirt collar as security detail grabs him from behind. >> he wanted them to take down the holler profanity-laced signs. >> in his statement last week, his supporters might riot if he is denied the nomination. >> he continues the path of spreading hatred, division, and it's fundamentally wrong. >> i don't think that kind of language is appropriate to talk about violence about rioting. >> be a big enough person to say i gave it my best and i didn't win. >> today donald trump will be in washington, d.c. he's set to hold a big meeting

with top republican lawmakers trying to smooth things over a bit. and they are already lining up to be a controversial event for him. they are planning to boycott his speech, alisyn. >> that you know so much for setting that up. jackie kucinich of the daily beast and zig miller. great to have both of you here. but this weekend seemed to have the worst. as you say, there was the video of a protester sucker-punched and kicked over the weekend. and donald trump, in typical fashion, did not take responsibility for that -- there you see the horrible video. listen to his statement. >> these are professional agitators. when a road is blocked going into the event so people have to

wait sometimes hours to get in, i think that's very fair and there should be blame there too. when signs are lifted up with tremendous profanity on him, the worst profantity, and you have television cameras all over the place and they see the signs, those people have some blame also. >> jackie, how do you describe what's going on at these trump events? >> it seems both sides are fueling the fire a bit. trump's violent rhetoric is also a huge part of this. this started well before people were blocking roads at his rallies. in the old days they used to take them out in stretchers. punch him in the face for me. things like that do not belong on the presidential level or any level in politics for that party. >> steve, there was another incident involving trump's campaign manager. you saw the video there.

he doesn't punch the protester but grabs him by the collar and brings him back so he can be manhandled by security. is this the job of a campaign manager to be milling around in the crowd with protesters. >> that's absolutely not the job of a campaign manager. this is starting to become what may be assault allegation against the campaign manager. and trump's defense that he was there to take down some of those offensive signs. it is kind of a rich explanation from a candidate like donald trump who deployed profanity to his benefit frequently on the campaign trail. yesterday we heard that's not the role of a campaign manager. leavist up to security professionals. is and trump also has his hired private security in addition to local police. maybe they should be leaving it up to law enforcement.

trump criticized over that. >> cory was a state trooper in his past life. so he is more comfortable milling around in some of the chaos that some of us might be. but donald trump said repeatedly i don't condone violence. is that enough since these things keep happening at his events? >> it seems like he is saying i don't condone violence and it is a wink at this point. >> today donald trump, something interesting is happening this afternoon. he is meeting with two dozen gop party leaders. i think it is some fence were mending. how is this going to look? who is going to be involved? >> a number of senators, lobbyists involved. there is really no choice here. some are potential delegates for the national convention. lawmakers from states where

voters cast ballots for donald trump. he won primaries and caucuses. they have to be somewhat respectful of him. that's where their base went in the primaries and caucuses. but there is an opportunity to finally make in roads to the party establishment. there's no love lost there. >> the stop trump movement continues. mitt romney is outspoken. he had very strong word he posted on facebook. this week in the you the you the caucus i will vote for senator ted cruz. today there is a contest between trumpism and republicanism. it has become associated with racism, miss only any,

xenophobia, vulgarity and most recent threats and violence. i am repulsed by each and every one of these. >> we haven't seen these groups move the needle. when you see the consensus building in washington. someone like newt gingrich has been talk to go leaders and trying to get their heads around trump going forward so they have a peaceful convention. when you see things like that going on it diminishes the stop trump movement that's going on in another part of the establishment entirely. >> that's why we have you guys to help. >> that's right. >> and another thing that's happening is 300 rabbis and jewish leaders saying they will walk out or protest this. how is this going to go? >> he's probably going to find someone to try to spin that to

his advantage. can donald trump deliver on some of the policy that he promised. he was asked yesterday a few times what he hoped to see there. he's used that as an example for a pinnacle of the great deal that only he knows how to strike. that will be what a lot of the republican establishment is looking to. if he can bring some of that policy, it will be a threshold issue. can they actually get behind him ever. if he can come out with a coherency on some of these complex issues, that makes it for him. if he doesn't, it can harden that opposition. there's not a lot of time. they will still put up a fight. >> jackie, thank you so much for walking us through all of this. it will be a very interesting day on the trail and beyond. all right. let's take a look at the democratic side. hillary clinton and bernie sanders making pushes in western states. chris patz is live on this

between both nations after decades of hostility. >> everything we have accomplished so far, more americans come into cuba, more engagement with the cuban people, civil society, entrepreneurs, students, young people. more opportunities for cuban people to improve their lives. it's all happening because of you. >> just hours before president obama arrived in cuba, government authorities arrested dozens of dissidents, protesting for improved human rights. members of the group known as the ladies in white were quickly rounded up and taken away. they demonstrate every sunday against the castro regime and its atrocious human rights record. the rain did not stop the first family from touring the city's historic district. hoping to catch a glimpse of history. >> [speaking foreign language] . they are known as protesters. that doesn't make their cause any less righteous.

yesterday was palm sunday. it's a very big holy day for catholics. some churches were open, some were not. a lot of change is needed here, and not all of it is about business. >> a lot of changes before our eyes a. i front row seat on history. there it is. chris is there bringing it to us. to see the president and the first lady. >> i'm curious. from the last time you were there, chris, had you seen change? there likely were improvements ahead of the president's visit. had you noticed a difference since you were last there? >> this is nothing like when the pope came. that didn't have the controversy to it in terms of the politics. the formation of the revolution, eye big part of the fuel and the fire was opposition to america, the evil imperialist. this is one of the state-run papers, grassroots. to see on the cover president obama in cuba, this was told to cubans this will never happen

all right. we had the big moment here when air force one touched down. that was history to be sure. the question is what will change? we have the men to discuss that right here. our bureau chief and senior correspondent jim acosta. gentlemen, we witnessed history together yesterday. i keep saying the word. no one thought this would ever happen. and it never had since the revolution. so, patrick, we have had time to absorb it. what is the word here in havana. >> i got home late last night. we said what do you want to hear from president barack obama. he is not going to be able to address the public. it's just a step too far. they know the president will talk about the long history. they know the history. people know their history very well. they want to hear about their future. a lot of people are going to be the tear down this wall line.

i think cubans want to hear about what he can build. most people work for the government at $20 or $30 a month. people are surviving by any way possible. they want to have a normal life. they want to be able to earn a decent living. they want to hear how the president can-can help. at the end of the day, it is really up to cuba to change cuba's reality. >> money is a problem. freedom is a problem. the president aware of this. he knew this would be smothered a bit here in cuba. frankly, there is no upside to show the cuban people loving to see obama. they are supposed to be the enemy, the american government. what is the hope for the side? >> just to get back to what patrick was saying, one of the questions when we see president obama and president castro together, do they take questions?

will they take questions in addition to these statements? >> i am lukewarm to that proposition. like the trade winds coming through. if it does happen, there is a signal, a that change is happening. >> president ma dura was here. they were hustling him out as they were bringing us in. he wants to do two things. he wants to bring u.s. business to cuba to cement his legacy. making it difficult to put the rum back in the bottle from a policy standpoint, if you don't mind me saying he will talk about human rights, freedom of the press, freedom of speech. the question is what words does he have? does he have a tear down this wall moment. it's a big test for the

president. a big test for the cubans. they want currency to come in. >> you have to give to get. we know that's the ratio involved here. so last night we were luck to to be kind of in the same room with a lot of the delegation that's here. whatever you want to call them. many of them cubans, businessmen in miami. they are not happy about the regime. they say i don't want to lose my country twice. just like jose ortiz, the father of cuban revolution, he spent most of his time exiled. so have we. now it's to foreign investment and the chinese. we are here to get our country back. >> it is not about making a quick buck. it's about rebuilding the country. >> hopefully. >> they talk about the blockade. cuban people talk about the internal blockade.

what the government has put up, making it possible to do the most basic ways like business. >> that's the co-headline on the paper. one par owe bam marks the other part blockades. >> the cubans talk about the internal bargaining. it stifles industry, freedom of expression. they see if you lift that as well, there's no limits. >> what's the main push back -- what's the main criticism is you shouldn't be there. as long as the castros are in power, don't reward them. >> that's right. cuban-american running for president right now saying the u.s. is propping up a dictatorship with currency and cash coming into cuba. i have a flyer for major league baseball. it's going to be here in la havana on tuesday.

tampa bay rays versus havana. espn will be broadcasting a game. i talked to a cuban dissident released as part of the deal. he said, you know what, i'm glad president obama is coming here. it will put pressure on the castro government and cubans to make changes. will this dissident be happy about it? he is set to meet with president obama later this week. it is is a huge matter. but it's going to happen. we will see how the cubans behave? we have seen it on state television cubans are watching this. changes are happening. it's not happening as fast as everyone would like it. >> if a dissident has been in jail, so much taken from them before this, how can anybody on the outside be against this? someone who suffered that much to say this is the threat forward. >> it is called politics. it is certainly going to come.

highest. back to you, alisyn. >> sounds like it has taken a while but they are now connecting the dots. thank you. breaking overnight, a big blow to isis in iraq. more than a dozen senior isis fighters killed in weekend air strikes on mosul university and the surrounding area. a number of local isis leaders were also killed. mosul university had reportedly been a base for isis fighters and their families. no students were there at the time. >> a marine killed in an isis rocket attack was at the first u.s. firebase in iraq. the base, which provides support to coalition forces, had only been operational for a few days. they plan to acknowledge its existence this week. they believe isis spotted marines when they moved into the area and started firing practice rounds. a nationwide effort begins today to protest republican senators who refuse to hold confirmation hearings for the president's nominee to the supreme court.

this weekend. just the latest in his pattern of targeting journalists. is he trying to silence the media? boston herald columnist is a reporter. and margaret hoover. ladies, great to have you here this morning. adrianna i want to start with you. i'm going to read just one of the barrage of tweets that donald trump sent out this weekend. i don't feel like repeating these attacks but i want to give a flavor for what he is saying about megyn kelly so you can get an idea. everybody should boycott the megyn kelly show. never worth watching. she is sick, and the most overrated person on tv. >> you know, i want to say this,

support him calling megyn kelly crazy or sick. she is a respected journalist and very objective and fair. and i find the fox networks to be objective as well. and to deliver the news balanced and fair. donald trump made it very clear early on in this campaign if you go after him, he's going to push back. >> when you say go after him, reporters and journalists do highlight what happens at his rallies. they do highlight inconsistencies. since when is that going after someone? >> well, you know, it really needs to be done fairly. and i'll give you an example. with some of the disruptions that are going on in his rallies, these protesters are suppressing free speech. he has every right to have these rallies and speech. the media will present it as when he pushes back on journalists, that's all he thinks are fair to him, that he

is suppressing speech of the media. so i think it's important that all journalists are even handed to present a situation fairly. >> fox has fired back at donald trump in their own statement about this. they said over the weekend, vitt ol'ic attacks against megyn kelly is his extreme, sick obsession with her is beneath the dignity of a presidential candidate who wants to occupy the highest office in the land. >> it is ream unprecedented. a news on organization is going to get boycotted. imagine what he does in the oval office. imagine him boycotting the press entirely. our democracy doesn't function

without free and fair press. bullying tactics is beneath the presidenc presidency. washington journalists standing up to donald trump. and you have the other side, where shawn hannity is having him on for an hour. it is a premonition of what could occur if he becomes president. >> it goes beyond megyn kelly and fox news. he lobs all sorts of insults at journalists, some of us at cnn included. but it's not the insults that are the problem. obviously we can handle that. it's the blocking access to the story. so when he doesn't like your reporting, if he thinks it suspect fair, even if it's just reporting what happened at rallies. politico has been blocked.

he had issues with jorge ramos. katy tur had been rounds with him where the crowd began insulting nbc's katy tur there. what these tactics that do seem to have a chilling effect on the free press. >> i have to say i just see double standards. the press has done a hatchet job a lot of them. they have hurled some of the worst insults on him. they have compared him to a racist or called him a racist. jorge ramos called him a racist. he has every right to defend himself and push back. live is a two-way street. if you dish it out, you have to be able to take it. he is just defending himself from what he perceives as false attacks. >> the press is never fair to conservatives, or so we think.

we think we have an uphill battle to prove our ideas. this has been a conservative feat for a very long time. but if you're the president, what you do is you take them on substance and prove why they are wrong. you don't double down and attack the journalist. it is usual to see him going out and taking personal attacks. it is deflection ear and diversion ear. rather than trying to say you know what, may began, take the complaint on and win the argument. don't attack the journalist. >> very quickly, 10 seconds, adrianna, your response? >> margaret, i think you made good points. when he tweets at megan kelly, he could say i think your coverage is biased toward me. i invite you to come to my rally where thousands of women support donald trump. >> there you go. >> there you go.

national spokesman for ted cruz and jeffrey lord, former reagan political director. gentlemen, thank you so much for being here on "new day". jeffrey, i want to start with you. what happened over the weekend is the most violent confrontation between a protester and trump supporter. one of the protesters was punched and kicked. when you see a pattern like this, jeffrey, as we have now, this is part of a campaign culture now with donald trump. >> there is a link to a video by an attendee at the rally in tucson. he describes himself as a tucson policeman who was off duty and wanted to attend the rally out of curiosity. he also happens to be afternoon american. what he describes is protesters

deliberately provoking violence. >> how? >> he goes into great detail about this, ali. as i said in the past, this is what has been going on for decades. there is no excuse for violence. this gentleman said trump supporters not to respond when provoked. >> a direct reflection from whom, donald trump? was donald trump saying the person saying don't respond if provoked. >> someone comes out at the beginning of the rally say if provoked, please don't respond. i don't understand what the problem is. >> part of the problem is we hear people say people should be punched, taken out on a stretcher. are events like this at ted cruz

do you agree with what the president is saying there? do you believe by coming you help, as opposed to rewarding the regime? >> i do. i believe what the president should be talking about as well is the changes that have happened since 2009 had restrictions were lifted on travel. what that did is allow capital to fund a lot of businesses. their human rights has improved significantly. >> there is propaganda going both ways. $3 billion, $4 billion. where did it go? did it go to the castros? what do you believe is false propaganda? what is real? >> what is real is 25% of the cuban people work in the private sector and are less reliant on

government. so when you're less reliant on government, then your human rights condition improves significantly. when the party comes to people and say, hey, you have to attend this rally, if you're employed in the private sector you're not behold especially as you would be otherwise. so the economic case is the human rights case as well in many ways. so i would say that the human rights condition has improved significantly despite what the government continues to do on that front, detaping people and harassing the ladies in white. that will still go on. for a number of cubans, the majority, it is better and will improve significantly as more americans come here and business is better. >> the pendulum swings back and forth. others who say the president was right to come say there are a lot of places around the world this happens. the u.s. doesn't shut them out.

that only makes the situation worse. ma dura meeting with fidel castro. the sign very evident of what they are trying to do. cuba obviously embracing that. raul castro not meeting you guys off the plane yesterday. what do you take in terms of the serious of respecting this dynamic of change?

washington examiner. great to have both of you with us. >> thanks for having me. appreciate it. let's pull up maps. this is the republican side. you see arizona, winner take all there. that's 58. and utah is the caucus at 40. at the moment, i'll just show you interesting polls. arizona has trump leading 31%. cruz 19%. kasich 10%. ted cruz gets 53%. how rare is it to see donald trump third in a state poll here? kasich gets 29%. what do you make of what's going on to happen tomorrow? >> what we are seeing is donald trump has been out substantially in arizona polls. he has gotten endorsements from sheriff joe arpaio.

strengthening our borders and immigration stance will help there. in utah, ted cruz, is up by 53%. john kasich is second in that state. if you look at the more mormon heavy cop tests we have seen in wyoming and idaho, he has done well there. trump has also questioned mitt romney's religion there. that could hurt him in utah. >> we know now that romney has come out for ted cruz. he doesn't think kasich has a chance. >> conservative leaders have met, as part of the stop trump movement, they have pressured the campaigns to basically lay off each other and to not compete in states where one of them is doing very well.

in other words, they're asking john kasich to not compete in utah so ted cruz can-can run away with it. have you ever is heard of arrangements between competing campaigns like this? >> no. and it won't work. cole illusion doesn't work in this competition. we need a fair race. there is an interesting wrinkle in utah's rules. it is not winner take all but majority take all. if cruz can pass the 50% threshold, he will get all 40 delegates. that makes it important. i don't think that collusion ever works. they need to run their race and do the best they can. the notion that party bosses can come in and control things is just nuts. it's actually going to help trump. trump voters -- one of the top issues they always mention is they want something outside the establishment. as the establishment rallies to try to pathetically oppose

trump, it will help trump. >> let's look at the democratic side. as we had, they have an additional idaho caucus in there. here's what's at stake. 75 delegates in arizona. idaho 23. utah 33. at least at the moment, i'll just pull up the arizona poll because hillary clinton has 50%, twice what berne where sanders does. do you think bernie sanders makes in roads. >> it is not about winning but principle. what is problematic for hillary clinton is about winning. and it doesn't seem to be about principle. i think that's what bernie sanders is hurting her in the sense not only has she turned to the left in a lot of key issues that could come back to hurt her, but her a authenticity is being called into history. bernie sanders is authentic.

he comes across as likable, real. you believe what he is saying. those are things that hillary clinton really lacks. it goes back to even 2008 in the abc debate when she was asked was she likable enough. voters, the issue of trust went to bernie sanders. >> paul, tkuptd to take a crack at that? >> hillary clinton has a lead. 131 delegates at stake tomorrow in my party. hillary will get her share. she's very strong in arizona. bernie looks strong in utah and idaho. bernie will win his share.

many others say, no, you are rewarding a regime in the castros. there can be no real change. somebody argues that very strenuously and knows this not only in his head but his heart. senator, can you hear me? >> i can. good morning, chris. >> what do you want to let people know about what life is like for your family, for the people you know and for cubans in general is and why that makes you against president obama coming down here? >> look, i commend you for the fact that you have covered the repreparation, the terrible conditions that cubans live in. that is the reality of the cuban people. it is blamed a lot of times on the trade sanctions of the united states imposed in cuba. but the origin of those comes from the ex appropriation on of u.s. properties without compensation. then it goes on and on and the difficult realize between the two countries.

president obama back in december said i won't go to cuba until the human rights conditions there improve. i have flown in that wonderful airplane that landed there. that's the airport from which i left as a 15-year-old child alone in 1962. i always dream of that plane returning to cuba. i always thought it would happen under different conditions. when there was a president to welcome a cuban president that would meet them and show them that kind of respect but would be elected by the people and respect human rights. it is a reward. it is an action you take as president obama is going to visit in argentina, his next stop on this trip. that is a president dental democratically elected. my focus is on what's good for the cuban people.

i would have hoped the president held out until cuba showed reciprocity to all that has happened the last 14 months. it has been completely one sided and a one-way street. that's why i objected. >> so, senator, on the other side of the thinking the embargo hasn't worked. isolating them hasn't worked. the united states works with a lot of auto bad people around the world in an effort to create a catalyst for change. even made the cover of granma, the state-run newspaper this morning. a lot of cubans didn't believe it would happen. maybe the united states government isn't the evil empire they have been taught to believe. is there some value in that? >> i really don't think the cuban people believe the united states to be an evil empire. i think they want to come here.

people have died to get here. it is referring to the desire of so many to leave, to come to the u.s. so it's not really viewed as an enemy by the cuban people. it has been made an enemy by the cuban government, frankly in ways that have been incredibly dangerous. there's so many issues that are not in the past like the missiles in cuba and youth. but each continues to this day. support for terrorists. harboring criminals, fugitives of u.s. justice. all issues remain on the table. >> when you look at the argument of compare this to iraq, all of these places in north africa and other places in the world where the u.s. reached out to have

diplomacy, even though they are incredibly oppressive regimes, why not try it in cuba? >> well, you know, the president has a visit from iran. an opening with some reciprocity which hasn't been received but measuring steps so you encourage change within cuba. in other words, use a presidential visit as a shift and something that would be done for the human rights condition. the ladies in white, simple little peaceful march yesterday, had to be interrupted by the thuggery of the cuban oppressive forces. what is so dangerous about these women marching with palms in their hands after going to sunday mass, down a street? there's no harm in that. on sunday when the president of the united states is arriving, to continue to do that shows

within the republican party taking on new urgency. republican leaders trying to engineer strategies to block donald trump's path to the nomination. we'll look at these strategies with our cnn political commentator and associate professor of city university of new york. happy monday to you, professor. let's talk about the delegates right now. we know at this point it really is a big numbers game. you want to hit that delegate number count for me. there we go. if we know the number they're looking to get is 1,237, the numbers are in favor of donald trump. things are looking good for him. if we start looking at -- let me go back to this. i think somebody else is playing with it back there. we have a primary coming up in wisconsin april 5th. this is a big deal. a lot of eyes are on this one. >> this is important because after tomorrow the calendar slows down. >> this has been a big hectic until now. >> a long period, almost a

month, in which there will be few states voting. biggest one during that open period is wisconsin. it will get more attention than it might otherwise get and anti-trump forces are putting in a lot of money. one report $2 million in an effort to stop trump's momentum there. if they can't, the states that come afterwards in the northeast look like they could be very good states for him. >> now, one that's coming, this is june 7th. montana primary. it's one of the few ones left that winner takes all. >> and this is an area where cruz is stronger. cruz is weaker in states that don't are evangelical christians. if cruz is going to hang close to trump, he needs to do well in states like montana. >> another one on june 7th is south dakota. 29 delegates at stake there. again, this is only about six weeks away until the convention. it's cutting it close with some of these.

another one to watch. >> i don't think many people think cruz could overtake trump. what cruz needs to do is make sure that trump doesn't get the 1,237 and hope people will flock to him at the convention. >> and a split map scenario. kasich focuses on east coast and cruz on the west coast. >> kasich is stronger in the northeast where they elect moderate. cruz is stronger in the west. the idea was that each of them would battle donald trump in one place. the problem of course -- we've seen this throughout the republican presidential campaign, coordination even though they may want it to happen, each candidate is out for themselves. kasich is running ads in utah, a state where cruz hopes to beat trump.

>> you try to lure them to the other side. tell us how -- what entails that in terms of conversations that are happening in the hallways? >> the hope of the anti-trump forces is trump doesn't get to 1,237 on the first ballot. on the second ballot, some people become uncommitted and could go to another candidate. what makes things more intriguing is some of the trump delegates, the people who are pledged to vote for trump on the first ballot themselves could defect from trump in the second ballot. we're just now seeing who actual delegates are. an effort to create double agents. very exciting stuff. people who are pledged to trump. they have to vote for him on the first ballot but not trump people. people closer to the republican establishment and in a second ballot they might defect from trump. >> that's when it gets fascinating. third strategy is the idea of another nominee all together. these are some of the names

they're looking at. rick perry, former texas governor. paul ryan said not interested. not going to happen. >> paul ryan has a good, very important job. nobody really thinks this third-party candidate could win. >> this is the least viable strategy? >> it gives republican primary voters a reason to turn out. why is that important? they're terrified of losing the senate and the house because republicans stay at home. at least this way you give republicans a reason to go out and they vote for the republican senatorial candidate which helps republicans. >> we appreciate it. following a whole lot of news today. president obama set to meet with cuban's leader on his historic trip to havana. let's get right to it. >> we don't condone violence. >> we're better in america when we're together. >> security at the arena, the

>> reporter: the republicans are heading into a big election day tomorrow with key contests in arizona and in utah. for donald trump, a lot of the focus right now for him is having to explain this violence that continues to break out at his rallies. >> again, i say it for everybody, especially for the media, we don't condone violence. >> reporter: donald trump once again on the defensive. >> how come we're the bad people all the time? >> reporter: as clashes continue to overshadow the front runner's campaign events. >> one is dragging a flag and no respect for the flag and his partner, whoever that may be, has a ku klux klan hat on and you had an african-american man got incensed and he started hitting the people. >> reporter: at a dinner sunday, the republican front runner trying to explain chaos at his rally on saturday night. >> get them out of here.

>> reporter: this protester caught on camera getting sucker punched and tackled and repeatedly punched and kicked by a trump supporter who was arrested and charged with assault. >> what just happened to me inside this place is a direct result of trump's methods, his lies and angry rhetoric and violent rhetoric he's displaying at his campaign. >> reporter: a woman being escorted out wearing a kkk hoodie but the two don't know each other and trump's campaign manager in a verbal confrontation with another protester seen in this cnn video yanking the man's shirt collar as a member of trump's security detail grabs him from behind. >> i give him credit for having spirit. he wanted them to take down those horrible signs. >> reporter: trump's competition seizing on the violence and statement last week that his supporters might riot if he's denied the nomination in a

contested convention. >> donald trump continues that path of spreading hatred, spreading division and it's fundamentally wrong. >> i don't think that kind of language is appropriate to talk about violence and rioting and if you go to a convention and lose, be a big enough person to say i gave it my best and didn't win. >> reporter: today donald trump will be in washington, d.c. set to hold a big meeting with republican lawmakers trying to smooth over relations and speak tonight at the apec conference lining up to be a very controversial event for him. a group of rabbis plan to boycott his speech and walk out in protest. >> very interesting to see what happens at both of those events. thank you for that. you don't often hear arizona as being described as a key battleground state but this year it is because it could push trump and hillary clinton that much closer to sewing up their nominations. joining us is jeff dewitt, state

treasurer and campaign manager for trump in arizona where voters head to the polls tomorrow. good morning, jeff. >> good morning. thank you very much. >> great to have you here. i want to start with what we just saw. it seemed to be the most violent confrontation to date. it was in tucson. you saw that protester there being punched and falling to the ground and being kicked. this is your state. donald trump is your candidate. are you comfortable with what's happening at his rallies? >> well, i was at that rally. before the rally started, there was a pa announcement made saying we don't want any violence and anybody attending is not to engage with protest s protesters. keep in mind, that particular gentleman was standing right next to somebody who was wearing a kkk hoodie. he himself was holding some sort of a picture of a confederate flag and saying something to an african-american male and quite frankly, if you do that, you run

the risk of obviously inciting somebody to do something against you. it's not condoning anything at all. >> is it justifying -- >> this guy did everything he could to provoke violence. >> that's what i'm wondering about. trump campaign said we don't condone violence. and so does it justify violence? >> violence is never justified. however, when you're going to do that to a random person, the person that struck the man has nothing to do with the campaign. we don't know the gentleman at all. he is an african-american male who had somebody in his face holding a confederate flag standing next to somebody in a hoodie. protesters are coming in and they are vile in trying to incite violence. another group of protesters which the 25 people that came up there were saying the most horrible, horrible things. quite frankly, we let them go on

for about 15 minutes before we did something hoping they would just wear themselves out. you know what happens when you let them go? what we found out is they started turning on the crowd. they started pushing people and hitting people. i saw a violent woman protester who was in the face of a mom and young child doing middle fingers and yelling the f word and it was just horrible stuff. so these protesters come in and they're trying to incite violence. they want the press. they want to get on. what do you do as a campaign? what can we honestly do? we got those people out without an incident. that doesn't get reported. >> let me ask you if the campaign is doing everything it possibly can. donald trump says i don't condone violence. there's an announcement over the laud speaker advising people not to engage in violence. is it time for donald trump to say do not punch anyone, do not hit anyone, the opposite of things he said which is i would

like to punch that guy in the face. >> again, that was said at the beginning of the rally. >> not by donald trump. should donald trump say that? >> he has. expand the speech. he'll say nobody touch him. nobody touch him. get him out. everybody be nice. nobody touch him. he says that over and over again. he's doing everything he can to prevent violence. that's what we're doing as a campaign but these people are coming in wanting violence. that's how they're making their statement. you should have seen what was going on outside of the event. it was hard for people to even get inside that event because there was a group of violent o protesters hitting and pushing and throwing things at people. these protesters are doing awful things. it's just awful that that stuff goes on. so i'm actually very, very impressed with how all of the attendees to the event -- one person hit him. if you saw the amount of abuse that the supporters took from

protesters at that event, i think we did a very, very good job of keeping violence to a minimum. >> there's another moment where the campaign manager for donald trump is actually in the crowd. you see him reach out and grab a protester by the collar and pull him back. hard to know what happens afterwards but that's him engaging in a physical moment with a protester. is that the job of the campaign manager? should he be down there in the crowd? >> well, i was in the crowd about ten feet behind him when that happened. so, yeah, at the time the police had told us that they weren't going to go and do anything about it. we had let that crowd of people go on for about 15 minutes and those people were pushing people. i saw a female protester punch a gentleman three times. punched him three times. then started yelling he hit me, he hit me, he hit me and they were trying to start a riot. at some point we have to do

something to get them out. we got 25 of those protesters out where the worse thing you saw was a gentleman grabbed by the collar but looks like he was grabbed mainly by the person to his left. if you look, there's no way that cory's two fingers on a collar if that even is his hand, could have turned the guy around that fast. you see cory with no exertion on his part. it's clear that it was the gentleman to cory's left and the guy turns around. that guy you are looking at was saying the most horrific things to children and to women. he was a terrible guy saying f bombs and using his middle finger everywhere. it was that guy that needed to go. he had to go. unfortunately the police didn't take him out so at some point we have to get on. this is a private event. we rented the facility for a private rally and everyone is there to hear our candidate. they're not there to hear that guy's vile statements.

>> jeff dewitt, we appreciate your perspective. thank you for being on "new day." on the democratic side, meanwhile, hillary clinton and bernie sanders making big campaign pushes ahead of western tuesday. clinton herself is preparing for a big speech today in front of a pro-israel gathering. brianna keilar is there in washington with more on what we can expect to hear from her. >> reporter: that's right. hillary clinton will address this pro-israel lobby having a huge conference here in washington, d.c. behind me. also, all of the republican candidates for president will be addressing this crowd as well. hillary clinton, we understand from a campaign official, is going to attempt a takedown of trump when it comes to foreign policy and specifically when it comes to israel/u.s. policy. we expect she'll say the next commander in chief needs to have a steady hand and cannot be unpredictable and this barb aimed at trump. we expect her to say the u.s.

must never be neutral. this is her targeting something that trump said recently at an event where he seemed to indicate that he might be neutral when it comes to israe i israeli/palestinian conflict. hillary clinton will attempt to make donald trump look squishy on foreign policy in general and unfit in temperament overall. it's also important to note bernie sanders will not be here. utah, arizona, idaho having contests tomorrow. he's going to stay out west giving a foreign policy speech in utah today in lieu of being here addressing this crowd as the other candidates are. >> all right. thank you for watching all of that for us. on the eve of tomorrow's western state contest, you can catch the

final five candidates tonight at 8:00 eastern with anderson cooper. >> all right. president obama is going to have a very big day today. back to the news. president obama is going to meet with cuban leader raul castro today. the president is in cuba bringing a message of peace and unity but his visit is not without controversy. a lot of people don't think he should have come. they think it's rewarding an oppressive regime. dozens of dissidents were arrested at a heated protest just hours before the president touched down here. even so, the president's presence is a sign of hope and that change can be a good thing. take a look. many here in cuba thought they would never see this. air force one touching down at havan havana's airport on sunday.

his historic visit rich with symbolism and filled with high expectations. the president meeting with staff members of the recently reopened u.s. embassy at a nearby hotel. >> it is wonderful to be here. back in 1928, president coolidge came on a battleship. it took him three days to get here. it only took me three hours. >> reporter: the president talking about accelerating the engagement between both nations after decades of hostility. >> everything we've accomplished so far, more americans coming to cuba, more engagement with the cuban people, civil society, faith groups, entrepreneurs, students, young people, more opportunities for the cuban people to improve their lives. it's all happening because of you. >> reporter: just hours before president obama arrived in cuba, government authorities here arrested dozens of dissidents protesting for improved human rights. members of the group known as the ladies in white were quickly

rounded up and taken away. they demonstrate every sunday against the castro regime and its atrocious human rights record. the rain did not stop the first family from going through the historic district. cubans hoping to catch a glimpse of history. all right. making sure the tent stays up. it's the wind. it's blowing through here. a front is coming through. there's some obvious questions that people are going to want to see after this. this big gesture by president obama, it is historical. it's symbolic. but what does he get in return? what is done for the cuban people here? that's the big question. >> chris, we can't help but notice your culturally appropriate garb that you're wearing. tell us the history of your

conjunction with the president's visit. >> do you think the starwood thing we hear that's a done deal. >> they are in final negotiations and making progress in trying to get this done. they're not the only technology company interested in investing in cuba. there's a tremendous opportunity here. the other thing to recognize is that there's a lot of hunger on the part of the cuban people to have access to information and modern communications we take for granted in the united states. it has potential to really transform not just the economy here but daily life here. >> for us in the states, your internet, wi-fi, service, that's about convenience. here it's about freedom. it's about being able to express themselves and what they take in and put out. you made history for them here. you gave them something that generations thought would never happen. what do we get back from the united states perspective for people here that are starving not just for food but for

freedom. >> the president made this policy change back in december of 2014 because he recognized that the way that the united states could accomplish our policy goals was by better engaging with the cuban people. for more than five decades, the policy has been to isolate cuba and see if that encourages the government to do a better job of respecting the rights of the cuban people. that didn't work. the president said let's engage with the cuban government and cuban people and better make our case. by deepening economic ties we create opportunities to cuban people to thrive and good for businesses in the united states. so to avoid the perception if not reality that you're making money on the back of oppression, there needs to be changes in terms of what we see here with human rights. i know that you know that. i know it's one of the talking points that come out of the

white house. raul castro doesn't meet the plane. they arrest the women in white right before you get here. they seem to be acts of control from the regime to show this is who we are and what we are. but that's unacceptable. >> there is more progress that needs to be made. when you consider the reaction among the cuban people from the policy announcement, the polls show that overwhelmingly the cuban people support this change in u.s. policy. >> people aren't the problem. it's the regime. >> our goal is to empower the cuban people to have a government that reflects their will and their ambition. that's our goal. that's why it's important that you have the president greeted with chants of usa. that's why it's important that polls show that more than 90% of the cuban people actually support this policy change and that by better interacting with the cuban people having american visitors travel to cuba and spending more time and money

here giving american businesses the opportunity to get access to the cuban market and do business with the cuban people, we can open up the world and give cuban people more access to the broader world and the united states. that will empower them and give them more of an opportunity to create a country and a government that better reflects their ideas. >> do you ask for specific moves actions, by the regime in return for provide other benefits? >> we have seen some progress in terms of releasing some political prisoners that were previously detained. there's always going to be this back and forth. we wouldn't expect changes we would like to see in cuba occur overnight. previous policy was in place for more than 50 years and didn't bring about changes. this policy in place for a little over a year. we'll continue pushing. i think a lot of the economic freedom that you do see here where we made some progress is important and is an indication of things to come. greater access to the internet.

greater access to information. the ability to do businesses in cuba. we see a thriving entrepreneurial class in cuba. the president and first lady went to a privately owned and privately operated restaurant. >> a senator joining the delegation forgetting about the partisanship of it and important sign for him he says because change here for the people matters more than the politics back home. >> i think the other part about this policy that's important for people to understand is what better way for the united states to better advocate for our values than to have the leader of the free world, the president of the united states come to the island and meet with the head of the cuban government. castro. what better way to advocate for freedoms that we hold dear in our country than for the president of the united states to give a nationally televised address in cuba advocating for those freedoms and demonstrate our commitment to human rights than have president of the united states meeting in private

with political opponents of the cuban government. this is what engagement is about and the most effective way for us to advance our interests in cuba. >> how do you deal with the fact that it's done by executive action. embargo is an animal of congress and technically can't go away. president obama has some time left but not that much. castro has some time left but not that much. his influence will extend probably in a more definite way than president obama. what do you do? >> look, i think it's going to be really hard for the next president if he or she chooses to do so to roll back the progress over the last year. you mention the starwood deal and technology investments we're seeing and bipartisan support that exists in washington, d.c. for this policy change. we're seeing a significant increase in the number of americans able to travel to cuba and reestablishing direct flights between the u.s. mainland and cuba that will begin again this year.

all of that is toothpaste that's hard to get back in the tube. >> you have cuban american business people who came down with you. we were meeting with some last night. they say congress has to remove the embargo for this to be permanent but the most important piece of paper is not a law for us but a contract. when we have businesses down here and we're tied and people know that and they're getting jobs from it and they're being able to benefit from it, which is obviously most important, that will be just as strong. is that the hope that this will be dollar bill diplomacy? >> part of the challenge of doing business is the climate is uncertain. it's given pause to u.s. businesses interested in starting business here. that's pressure on the cuban government. they recognize that there are u.s. companies that want to invest here good for the economy and good for the people here so they're going to have to make changes to make this a more attractive business climate. that gives them incentive to do

donald trump warning the gop that they would hand the election to hillary if a third-party candidate were to deny him the nomination. >> if they're going to do that, they're going to do that but then you might as well hand the election to hillary clinton or whoever runs because frankly the republicans wouldn't have 1% of a chance of winning if that's the case. if they're going to be stupid and if they're going to do that instead of embracing these

millions of people that are coming in to vote, they're going to have to do that. >> let's bring in republican national committee chairman reince priebus to talk about all this. good morning, reince. >> good morning. >> so it seems like a contested convention has gone from sort of this out of the question fantastical possibility months ago to now a real possibility. so how are you preparing for what might happen four months from now? >> well, it's still a possibility but we still have candidates that can get to the majority number before the convention. taking your question, we're going to be prepared for all scenarios. i was general counsel for two years and now chairman for six. we'll put on a great convention. if it is a multiballot convention or open convention or contested convention, whatever word you want to use, we'll be prepared. what happens is that you have a vote and if no one gets a majority of the delegates on the

floor, then you have another vote and another vote and another vote and another vote until someone gets the majority. it's no different than when i became chairman of the party. you may not know this but i won on a seventh ballot. it was hardly a landslide. >> resounding victory. >> right. you know, i was never behind. i was always ahead but i to keep going on until i got the majority. so a minority of delegates does not rule for the majority. you have to have a majority. there's no question about that. >> that's interesting history, reince. now some republicans as you know are so upset at the prospect of a trump nomination and certainly a trump presidency that they're suggesting something even different. they're suggesting putting in a third candidate. let's say that trump and hillary clinton become the nominees. some republicans are floating this idea of then parachuting in a third candidate and they

mention names like paul ryan, rick perry, mitt romney. how certain are you you'll never get to that point? >> i don't know about certain. a few of those names i know are not even in the realm of possibility. i know you're just repeating what other folks are actually saying. i'm not questioning your information. it's never going to happen at least with the names that you just mentioned. >> none of those? >> no. no. just take the question generally though. it's getting too late. number one. number two, we don't know who our nominee is going to be. we have two candidates that can get to a majority before cleveland and so no one really knows who the nominee on our side is going to be. by the time you get to cleveland, it's really too late. i think it's a lot of talk. i get it. i mean, this has been a drama

filled and full of intrigue type primary. no doubt about that. i'm not questioning that this hadn't been more contentious than normal. i think we'll come together and the truth is in all of the polls, you look against hillary clinton who is in a ditch herself, we're either winning or within a margin of winning. so i think we're in good shape to win in november but we have to get through this primary season. >> this weekend there was more violence at a donald trump rally. a protester was kicked and punched. are you comfortable that donald trump has done everything he can to quell violence at his events? >> he's certainly talking about it a lot more now and certainly calling for the temperature to be cooled more now. you know, look, we're not a party that believes in violence. i think violence begets violence and you have to leave some of the work in the crowd up to professionals.

but i also think if we're being fair here and nothing against you or anyone, but when cable shows are on a constant loop, a couple knuckleheads pushing each other on a 24/7 loop, i mean you create an environment, i think, that just adds fuel to the fire. >> shouldn't we focus -- shouldn't we highlight if there's violence at campaign events and it's only donald trump's? shouldn't we mention that? >> mentioning it is fine. i'm questioning the 24/7 loop. i'm questioning three hours in prime time at night every day talking about it. i get it. it's news. i'm not questioning it's news. i'm not. but it's the obsession that i think that also adds to the problem. granted, both sides have to disavow violence. i'm not saying that. i do think that the media is obsessed to the point of it

the anti-trump faction of the republican party is looking for a way to slow down the front runner. can they do it tomorrow on western tuesday? joining us now is ohio governor john kasich. good morning, governor. >> hi. how are you? >> i'm well. what do you predict will happen tomorrow in arizona and utah? >> i'm not predicting but we are going to have a decent showing. i think it will be a good showing. i don't get into predictions. every time i get into predictions if i predict it wrong everybody jumps on me. >> some republican leaders say that you being in the race is only serving to leech votes away from ted cruz and ensure donald trump the nomination. let me play for you something that senator lindsey graham said

this weekend. >> john kasich is the most electable republican. i don't think he has a chance to win at the convention because it is an outside year. john kasich is an insider. i love john kasich. if he stays in this race or they don't coordinate the effort we will wind up giving the nomination to trump. >> are you a spoiler? >> i would be his fifth pick, himself then jeb and marco and ted. maybe it will get around to me as long as he gets it right at the end. if i hadn't stayed in the race and folded it up and turned over to marco trump would have won ohio and the whole thing would be over. the fact is that i have the vision, the message and the record. we are probably going to go to a done vention.

nobody will have enough delegates. when we go to a convention they will consider who can win in the fall. i'm the only one who can win it in the fall. secondly, this is a radical thing now. they may pick somebody who can be a good president and run the country. i'm not going anywhere. i am not a spoiler. ask the people that come to my rallies. they say thank god you are giving us hope that this country can be improved. we are gaining momentum. i am getting known and all things are good. >> you said it would be hard for any candidate to get to the magic 1,237 number by the contest but it is not impossible for donald trump. it is mathematically possible for him to get to that still. >> everything is mathematically.

how many times can we float around the moon? he will not have enough delegates. we will go there without enough delegates. we have had ten republican conventions and only three times of those ten has the front runner been selected at a convention. i think that at the end -- i have been at a convention that was contentious. the delegates take their decision making seriously. i'm the only one that can beat hillary in the fall why would anybody say i should leave? i'm not going anywhere. we are rising. we are raising more money. we are getting more political support. we have a lot of terrific people. charlie black, former governor of pennsylvania, we are doing well. it's not even a thought. the fact is what we are looking forward to is an extension of this primary process which will be a convention.

i believe i will be selected because of electability and because of the other thing that we seem to lose sight of, who can be a good president. we need a president that can create jobs and has foreign policy experience. i have a record and when people examine it it will be compelling. >> it sounds like your plan which was always to win ohio and then gain momentum from that is working according to plan, according to what you set out and you feel like there is momentum and all of that stuff is falling into place for you. ted cruz says that he has outraised you four to one in the past month. are you saying your fundraising is keeping a pace with what you had hoped? >> we are doing fine on fundraising like four times what it was the month before. we are doing fine. we will have enough resources to continue. we laid out a campaign plan and

we are campaigning the plan that we laid out and it is fitting into place. as we stay up north we will continue to do well. the question is as we head to the east, pennsylvania, new jersey who do you think will do well there? so i can't wait to get to california. that will be really exciting. we are satisfied. we just keep raising money and building the organization and it's working out the way we wanted it to. you know what is happening? people are beginning to look at the three candidates and saying who can win? who has the experience? we spent the last seven years saying how could we have elected a first term united states senator? i don't think amnesia has totally set in. maybe it has. we will wake them up. >> governor, what do you predict is happening in wisconsin? >> i want to tell you one other thing. in politics people think the
