and senator ted cruz who joined together to try to divide and conquer upcoming primary states. like everything else about this race, a little complicated and more than just a little bit murky. five states vote tomorrow but cruz and kazic are looking towards contests later. cruz says he'll concede new mexico and oregon to kasich and focus on indiana. and it's either an unpresent deed tactical move or a desperate attempt. here's what trump said at a rally just a short time ago. >> so, we had some big news today. you had 'lyin' ted' announce that he can't win by himself, he cannot do it. he's a joker. so, he said let me form a partnership, which i call -- what do we call it? go ahead.

than we saw right before kasich won ohio. so, it will be interesting to see how the ohio governor fairs after that. >> so, how is he feeling before the primaries tomorrow night? >> reporter: the campaign feels very confident going into tomorrow. they feel like donald trump could potentially even sweep all of them. and the trump campaign is trying to show -- they're putting up a slate. they held a conference call with their delegates in this state. they're trying to prove they can be organized, not just in the polls but in the delegate kouco. >> i'll be speaking with governor kasich later in this hour. so, the campaign has been against any kind of alliance up until now. i guess the question is why the change? >> reporter: well, anderson, quite frankly, cruz's campaign
9:04 pm
and his campaign is standing in the poll has changed. the cruz campaign was first approached by the kasich campaign about this nearly two months ago and then they would not even entertain the idea at all. cruz then preferring to call john kasich a spoiler in the races. well, fast forward to today and now cruz himself has no mathematical path to getting to 1237 without a contested convention. so, i think the fact that they're striking this alliance really speaks to the reality of the moment and the standing of their campaign and speaking again to how much of a hail mary pass last stitch effort this is for his campaign going forward. >> even after the announcement by the campaign, cruz is trying to down play the alliance. >> reporter: absolutely. this was so fascinating to watch on the campaign trail today. senator cruz almost validating and explaining the alliance and
9:05 pm
really down playing the significance, casting it as nothing unusual or out of the ordinary. he said this was just a decision about allocating resources that made sense for each of our campaigns. what what's most striking is how senator cruz played up what this meant for the john kasich campaign. he almost announced here at this rally and numerous times announcing to the crowd that there was big news that john kasich announced that they are pulling out of indiana. the fact that he framed it that way really played up his end of the bargain, what kasich gave and did not mention at all his end of the bargain that he husband had to concede in new mexico and oregon. >> certainly this unusual move and the question is whether this will be a turning point or create more fragmentation in the

he's made his bones as the anti-establishment people and between he and trump they've been getting 70 to 80% of the vote in the primaries. all the sudden he darts to the other side. but aside from that, i think it's an admission that they're in big trouble. as governor kasich says he doesn't have the resources to keep going on here in sort of a stylish fashion that you would want your candidate to do. so, it's pretty much an admission that they have a big problem on their hands. >> i don't know if it's going to backfire but i would suggest they do this more carefully. for example, the super packs are not on board. so, the president of one of the big super packs supporting cruz says they're running ads in indiana attacking john kasich. and they still have reason to think that what they've always wanted to do, which is have trump one on one is still something that might be within
9:20 pm
their grasp. as bad and fumbling as these experts may be, we still don't see donald trump getting more than 50%. so, the not-trump, not anti-trump, but the not-trump vote is still a majority. and so they have every reason to trooi to make that will of the people sort of live politically. >> i see that they're in deep trouble and they were both mathematically eliminated from the race and this was their only shot. i mean, the bottom line is this came too late. they could have had marco rubio in it. we've discussed this for months now. they could have kept him in the race, divided the pie up even more and trump would have never gotten 1237, the fight would have gone to the floor and here's where we are right now. at no other time do i think, certainly in the past few weeks, have we seen trump as strong as
9:21 pm
he is right now after new york, heading the to these five states. >> no one owes him a nomination, he has to get to 1237. i know it's nice to act like he is owed the nomination. but it's funny to use the argument of don't use all the rules and his rationale has always been i use all the rules in government. >> john kasich has decided to pull out of indiana to allow a head-to-head match up. >> and it's also insane cruz spin because cruz is crypt nite in the northeast. they've been totally eviscerated from the republican party and cruz is going to be annihilated tomorrow. the only thing would have been a strong kasich. >> in fairness, yes, cruz's
