tv Anderson Cooper 360 CNN May 4, 2016 9:00pm-10:01pm PDT
9:00 pm
4th be with you, here is something you've got to see. >> my favorite song. how did you know? >> come on, star trooper. come on. >> the white house celebrating the day by posting this video of president barack obama and first lady michelle obama "star wars" dance party back in december. that's it for us tonight. thank you for good evening, thanks for joining us tonight. two interviews with the two leading candidates for president, here on 360. there's much more to discuss. something that people said would never happen, that day has arrived. donald trump is the presumptive republican nominee for president of the united states. the culmination of hammering, mud slinging. mocking looks, their energy levels, the need to drink water, go to the restroom. gave them nasty nicknames, made outrages claims about their
9:01 pm
families, one by one knocked them out of the race. in the last 24 hours, the final two bowed out. today donald trump is the only one left standing. one person who doesn't seem to be daunted, hillary clinton. as i said, you'll hear from both candidates. we will start with secretary clinton who i sat down with a few hours ago. secretary clinton, thanks for joining us. >> good to talk to you. >> take us to last night, the moment ted cruz dropped out, you realized who the nominee for the republican party would be. >> well, it seemed pretty clear for some time how it was going to turn out, but i also know what it is like to keep fighting to the end because i did that in 2008 and something can always happen, but it didn't surprise me at all that it was over last night. >> assuming you get the democratic nomination are you ready for donald trump? i mean, he's already got an unflattering nickname for you, he is unlike any other candidate that you have certainly run
9:02 pm
against, anybody has seen in a long time. >> you know, anderson, i have seen the presidency up close from two different perspectives and i think i know what it takes and i don't think we can take a risk, loose cannon like donald trump running the country. he said it is okay for other countries to get nuclear weapons, i think that's downright dangerous. he said wages are too high. i think we need to have a raise for the american people. raise the minimum wage, get wages back going up. i think when he says women should be punished for having abortions, that is just beyond anything i can imagine. >> he did walk that back. >> well, he is a loose cannon. he is somebody who has said so many things and i am sure they'll be scrambling, his advisers will be scrambling, but he already said all these things. said climate change is a chinese hoax and i think it is real. we have to pull the world
9:03 pm
together and deal with it. you can go down a list, some of which he tried to bob and weave, but i think it is a risk, he is a loose cannon and loose cannons tend to misfire. >> if he is a loose cannon, he is willing to say things in a race against opponents, we have seen it already, that a lot of candidates were not prepared for on the g.o.p. side. are you ready for that? >> i've sort of been in the arena 25 years and i think yearly everything that could be thrown at somebody in politics and public life has come my way. >> you think you have a run against him. >> yes, but i am running my own campaign to be president, to deal with the economy, get it working again, take on all the barriers that stand in the way of getting people ahead. i have a clear mission for this campaign. >> a lot of folks on the gop side say they're running for issues as well and weren't able to --
9:04 pm
>> they didn't have the experience, maybe they just didn't want to take him on on issues because they actually agreed with him. everybody in that republican primary didn't want to raise the minimum wage, don't believe equal pay is a problem, don't want to talk about climate change. a lot of the same views, so they were really trapped. they couldn't run a campaign on issues that matter to america and i can and i will. >> he talked about the economy last night, hitting an economic message that clearly he is going to echo going forward. he talked about your husband signing nafta when he called it in the history of the world single worst trade deal ever done. according to latest cnn polling out today by 50% to 45 margin, voters say trump would do a better job handling the economy than you would. he has an economic message that's appealing to people. >> we'll have to go back and talk about history. 23 million jobs in the 1990s, incomes went up for everybody.
9:05 pm
he wants to argue against peace and prosperity he can do his best to make his case. i am going to talk about what we are going to do in the future, there are lessons we can learn. the economy does better with a democrat in the white house. saw the stark difference between my husband's presidency and george w. bush who went back to trickle down economics which is also what donald trump is advocating. then we saw barack obama have to rescue the economy from the failed economic policies of the republicans, so i'm more than happy to take that issue on and i think there's not only a lot of evidence on our side and certainly history on our side over the last 25 years, but any specifics that he has put out, you know, he makes these grand statements, grand accusations. at some point when you're running for president, you have to put a little meat on the bones, tell people what it is you're going to do and how you'll do it.
9:06 pm
>> he runs a different campaign than anyone on the gop side. calls in reporters. is that something you'll do more? >> he did it and it worked for him. i think reporters now have a chance to ask some tougher questions. it is not enough to call in, give somebody a platform, it is now time to make the tough decisions and you got to ask him what exactly would you replace x, y and z, if you're against trade agreements, how does that work? i am for fair and free trade. i voted against some of the trade agreements that came before me when i was actually a senator, so let's get to the specifics. if you think wages are too high, how do you look americans in the eye and say i know you haven't had a raise for 15 years but i don't think you deserve one. if you have a budget that slashes taxes on the wealthy and throws our economy and federal budget into the worst downward
9:07 pm
spiral of debt, tell us how that's going to work. i think it is time to get serious, the man is the presumptive nominee, and being a loose cannon doesn't in any way protect him i hope from being asked the hard questions that should have been asked in the primary process. >> wolf asked him about how he is going to run against you, whether he will change his tone. >> talk about will he be presidential. we had 17 people, all smart. one by one, week after week. boom boom boom. i don't want to change so much. i want to use that same strategy for trade deals. i feel i am a presidential person. >> same strategy you used on the republican candidates you want to use against hillary clinton? >> i would say yes, i mean again, a lot depends on how they treat me. if they treat me at a certain level, you've seen i am a counter puncher, i don't like hitting people first.
9:08 pm
i don't know how, i always felt i am better, certain boxers are better counter punchers. >> he says he is a counter puncher. how scorched earth is this race going to be. >> he is the one making that decision, anderson, not me. he is the one running the campaign, insulting people, demeaning women, degrading people with disabilities, talking about keeping muslims out of the country. he's the one running that kind of negative, aggressive bullying campaign. he can choose to run whatever campaign he wants to run. i'm going to keep staying on the campaign i am running. i have more than 3 million votes over senator sanders and i have 2 million votes over donald trump. i am going to keep telling people what i will do as president and keep being specific because i think people want to know what you're going to do and can hold you accountable that way. >> elizabeth warren said donald trump built his campaign on racism, sexism, xenophobia. do you agree?
9:09 pm
>> i think she's smart. >> you agree with that? >> i think anybody that listened to him and how he talked certainly can draw that conclusion. >> do you think he is a racist? >> i am going to let people judge for themselves. i have the highest regard for senator warren. >> more on my interview with secretary clinton ahead, including more about how she says she will handle trump in a general election matchup. >> this is a classic case of a blustering, bullying guy who has knocked out of the way the republicans, they were dumbfounded, they didn't know how to deal with him, they agreed with him and didn't know how to counter punch. allergies.
9:10 pm

9:12 pm
24/7. just like here. meat loaf! [dings bell] just like here. anybody got a pack... that needs leadin'? serving all your motorcycle insurance needs. now, that's progressive. welcome back on 360 tonight, we interview hillary clinton and donald trump. before the break, you heard clinton tell me she thinks trump is a loose cannon. she said it repeatedly. he already launched a few projectiles at her. she says she's ready. last night trump touched on the poll situation in west virginia saying he'll get the miners back to work, a reference to
9:13 pm
something you said back in march, you said we're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business, a statement you apologized for in west virginia saying it was out of context. trump is saying you'll say placate -- >> that's a broad misrepresentation. i have been very clear. we have to make a transition to clean, renewable energy. i have been clear for the campaign we can't do it in a way that totally leaves behind people who dug out the coal to turn on the lights and to power our factories. 100,000 coal miners in this country lost their lives in the 20th century, so i want people to pay attention to what we as a nation need to do to support them, but the market is making this decision. the market has driven down the cost of coal, so you have companies going bankrupt.
9:14 pm
so what i'm offering is a $30 billion plan to really revitalize and provide support for coal miners and their families, and that's the least they owe these people. >> they're worried about you against trump, that you're not ready for whatever he may throw at you, that he's brought up a lot of stuff about people that nobody could have predicted. quoting from "national enquirer" just yesterday, he's made references to your marriage to your husband. >> well, he's not the first one, anderson. i can't say this often enough. if he wants to go back to the play book of the 1990s, wants to follow in the footsteps of those that tried to knock me down, take me out of the political arena, i am more than happy to have him to that. >> you're ready for that. >> oh, please.
9:15 pm
this is to me a classic case of a blustering, bullying guy who has knocked out of the way all the republicans because they were just dumbfounded, they didn't know how to deal with him, they couldn't take him on on the issues because they basically agreed with him, and didn't know how to counter punch. >> do you think they waited too long? >> you have to ask them. i can only tell you the campaign i am going to run. the campaign i will run is about what we do in the future. i invite republicans and independents i have been seeing on the campaign trail, who have been reaching out to me, i invite them to join with democrats. let's get on the american team, get off the red or blue team, let's get on the american team. we have great opportunities ahead of us. i happen to believe america's best years can still be ahead of us. i have that confidence, i am optimistic, but it doesn't
9:16 pm
happen just by wishing for it or being a demagogue. it happens by rolling up our sleeves and getting to work to seize it. >> when you were a senator, did trump engage you on substance? he said he gave money for access. did he ever ask you for favors? >> not that i recall. i don't recall that. he has played all sides of the political arena. that is his choice. he can explain it how he choose. # i have been consistent about where i stand going back to when i started working as a lawyer for the children's defense fund. i am going to do everything i can to even the odds against people that feel the odds are stacked against them. i'm going to give it my all, to give every person, particularly every child in this country, the chance to live up to his or her god given potential. >> senator sanders takes issue with them calling you the presumptive nominee on the democratic side. what do you say to his supporters. should you be considered the presumptive nominee at this
9:17 pm
point? >> i am not calling myself that, i know there are contests ahead. i respect senator sanders in whatever choice he takes. i have a lot of empathy about this. i ran to the end in 2008. >> you have been there, you know what it feels like. >> i won nine out of the last 12 contests. people forget that. i won indiana, i won west virginia, i won a lot of states. but i couldn't close the gap in pledge delegates. the gap between me and senator sanders is far wider than it was between me and senator obama. >> having been in his shoes, what do you say? >> i know he said last week that he will do everything he can to prevent donald trump from being president of the united states, work seven days a week. i am going to really count on that because i want to unify the party. i am going to be reaching out to his supporters who have far more in common with me and my supporters than they do with donald trump and his campaign.
9:18 pm
>> one more question. donald trump talked about what he would look for in a vice president, someone with congressional experience to reach out to congress. obviously i'm not asking you who you would pick, but what qualities would you look for? is there something you would like to kind of -- a space you would like to fill in? >> i think the most important quality is that this person could become president on a moment's notice. there is no more important quality than that. and i intend to take that very seriously and find a person that i would have the confidence in to be a good partner with me, but most importantly to be a really good president for america. >> secretary clinton, thanks very much. >> thanks, anderson. >> she already has given some indication for the jabs. he called her crooked, said she's playing the woman card. and wouldn't have 5% of the vote if she were a man. # called it disgusting she took a bathroom break, just to name a few. to learn anything about trump
9:19 pm
and the nature of his attacks, this is just the beginning. wolf blitzer spoke with him, and moments after word came down that john kasich was dropping out. take a look. >> cnn has confirmed john kasich, the ohio governor is dropping out as well. you're the only one left now. >> that's good. that's good. you're telling me the first time about john, that's good. i think john is doing the right thing. >> ohio is an important state. no republican has ever been elected president of the united states without winning ohio. >> i think john will be very -- i had a good relationship with john. >> a lot of government experience, congress as a governor. >> i think john would be very helpful with ohio. >> he says he doesn't want to be vice president. >> could be. >> is he someone you would be interested in vetting? >> i would be interested in vetting john, i like john, have a good relationship with him, have gotten along with him well. whether he is vice president or not, i think he will be helpful with ohio.
9:20 pm
>> be honest, did you ever think last year in june in this building, you were going down the escalator, you would be the presumptive republican nominee? >> i hoped. >> did you really hope? >> yeah, i did. you have 17 people, very capable people. i heard a lot of pundits saying it was the single greatest group of talent ever assembled for either party in terms of a group, also the largest group. i joined somewhat after i heard that statement. i am saying what am i doing, hearing these people -- >> did you really think you could win? >> i guess, otherwise i don't think i would have done it. >> some thought did you it for publicity, a win. >> i don't need publicity. i gave up a lot to do it. i was asked to do "the apprentice" two more years, said i am not going to do it. gave up a tremendous amount, got controversial, i lost some licenses, not the bigs deal in
9:21 pm
my life, macy's didn't want to renew me because they thought i was too controversial, i think was a big mistake, not very loyal. it was a costly thing, not just the cost of the campaign that's frankly less. now it worked out well, i am happy with the way it all worked out. >> do you pinch yourself sometimes, say this is really happening? >> i don't think i would have run if i thought i couldn't have won, i didn't sit there and say i'm going to win, but subconsciously must have thought i was going to win and felt i was going to win. >> more of wolf's interview with donald trump, now the presumptive republican nominee. still convinced the system is rigged. how does he square that claim now that he's the last one standing. that's ahead. kwlr a heart attack doesn't care if you run everyday,

they found out who's been who? cking into our network. guess. i don't know, some kids in a basement? you watch too many movies. who? a small business in china. a business? they work nine to five. they take lunch hours. like a job? like a job. we tracked them. how did we do that? we have some new guys defending our network. new guys? well, they're not that new. they've been defending things for a long time. [ digital typewriting ] it's not just security. it's defense. bae systems. indiana delivered a crushing win last night for donald trump. shortly after polls closed, ted cruz bowed out, taking the trump campaign and others by surprise. today john kasich dropped out as well. mr. trump is now the presumptive republican nominee. it has been a dramatic 24 hours.
9:26 pm
wolf blitzer was the first journalist to interview trump in the wake of it all. here is more of that interview. >> recent weeks and months, you suggested the system is rigged. >> 100%. >> you still believe that. >> 100%. i don't mind. the only way i got it, i went for the knockout. i saw these folks going out, getting delegates and wining and dining people, bringing them to hotels, paying for hotel rooms, that's a bad system, a crooked system. by the way, bernie sanders' system is also rigged. that's why he wins and doesn't get anything out of it. >> but those are the rules. >> they're not the rules, it is a dishonest system. who gives out superdelegates in terms of democrats? who gives out superdelegates. the bosses give out superdelegates. >> they're elected party officials. >> meaning the bosses. that system is rigged, the republican system is rigged but in a more sophisticated way.
9:27 pm
i really think i'm very proud of the fact after all these many decades with the delegate system that i've been able to point out some real weaknesses, i think they'll be changed. for the republicans they'll be changed, maybe for the democrats. >> yesterday with the national enquirer story. i want you to clarify. you don't believe ted cruz's father had anything to do with the assassination of president kennedy. >> no, i don't. >> this is a story that was in national enquirer. here's the question. you're the presumptive republican nominee. >> no, i wasn't, not then. >> last week you said you were, thought you were. >> it was not announced until last night. >> the higher standard than to get involved in this stuff? >> here is what happened. ted cruz's father, seems like a nice guy, don't know him, seems like a nice guy, he made horrible statements about me, praying for bad things to happen to me, okay essentially. i said that's horrible and i was on a show. one of your competitors, they
9:28 pm
showed me the clip, i said wow, that's horrible. it is not just a one way street where i do something, it was a horrible statement. i was actually surprised by it, and during that and when i said how bad it was that a man would say something like that, i said why don't you read the various magazines because it is not only there, it is there with a picture of himself with lee harvey oswald. >> national enquirer put it out. >> i am just saying, it was all over the place, i am not saying he did it, i am saying it was all over the place. >> now they're saying you're the presumptive republican nominee. standard than to repeat conspiratorial things. >> i didn't know if i was going to win indiana or not, it was a tremendous landslide victory, more than anybody anticipated, incredible people out there. this was in the morning. >> people think the general election campaign started today.
9:29 pm
you verse us hillary clinton. this week she said this about you. >> the leading republican contender is the man who led the insidious birther movement to discredit the president's citizenship. we cannot let barack obama's legacy fall into donald trump's hands. >> do you know who started the birther movement? do you know who started it? do you know who questioned his birth certificate, one of the first? hillary clinton. she's the one that started it. she brought it up years before it was brought up by me and you know, she can talk. look, here's a person under investigation by the fbi. she's only going to get the nomination because it is a rigged deal, and frankly maybe she won't even be able to run. i think she probably will because i think the democrats will work it so that nothing happens to her, even though everything happened to other
9:30 pm
people that did far less. >> james comey, fbi director is a serious guy, you have confidence in him. >> yes, he is. >> if you think there are violations in the law, he will recommend that. you have confidence in him? >> i do have confidence in him. i don't know him, i do have confidence in him. >> let me clarify, the birther thing, where do you stand? >> i don't talk about it. every time i do, it becomes a story. i don't want to talk about it. >> she's going to raise this issue against you. >> i don't care. i am going to raise it against her. >> you hated this article about your wife melania. she posted that melania was dishonest and inaccurate. since then some of your supporters have viciously attacked her, anti-semitic attacks, death threats. people get so angry. what's your message when something like that happens. >> i haven't read the article, i heard it was very inaccurate and a nasty article.
9:31 pm
i am married to a very fine woman. she doesn't need this, believe me. she was very successful, she did tremendously well as a top model, she made a lot of money, and she's a nice person. and i guess some of the article says that she would go in at night and stay, she wasn't a party person, it is not her thing. this is a very high quality woman who loves people, has a big heart. she doesn't need to have bad things said about her. i heard the article was nasty. now, i haven't read it, i heard the article was not what it should be. they shouldn't be doing that with wives. i mean, they shouldn't be doing that. melania as top model, sent pictures around to utah. >> the anti-semitic things. >> i don't know about that. fans of mine?
9:32 pm
>> supposed fans posting angry -- >> you have to talk to them. >> your message to fans? >> i don't have a message to fans. a woman wrote an article that was inaccurate. i am used to it. the press is so dishonest, wolf, i can't even tell you. it is so dishonest. nothing more dishonest than the media. i know it better than anybody. it has gotten to a point it doesn't bother me any more, it has gotten so ridiculous. i've had stories in the last couple weeks that were so dishonest, knowingly dishonest, not a question of a bad reporter. >> don't you think it helped? >> i find it to be the lies and deception, the way they write, for clicks, i don't know why they do it. you would think a good, honest story would be better. and so i do know that the story on melania, first of all, not a lot of people would read it except you bring it up. i would like to see my family treated at least fairly and she didn't need a story like this.
9:33 pm
>> in terms of dishonesty, on the birther claim, hillary clinton never said barack obama was born outside the united states. it is a claim donald trump made in the past but not true. secretary clinton never asked to see his birth certificate, long and short. that demand that originated from a fringe group of supporters and forwarded by prominent ones. for accuracy sake want to make it clear. he doubles down on what he told me in a wisconsin town hall. >> you're ready to let japan and south korea become nuclear powers. >> if they're not going to take care of us properly, we cannot afford to be the military and police for the world.

so far we are off to a good start, he said trump is a genius. >> have you ever spoken with him? >> i don't want to say. i think i have a good relationship with him. i may not. i'll know pretty quickly. i would call him, say don't do it again, don't ever do it again. >> you have seen the pictures? >> yes, i think it is highly disrespectful to our military, our country. >> talk about the relations with the muslim world, in a policy speech, you said you want to work closely with allies in the muslim world, all of which are at risk from radical islamic violence. >> 100%. they have to save themselves. we can help them, but they have to save themselves. have to put boots on the ground and save themselves. otherwise they're going to be, i won't even say, bad things will happen. >> how do you work closely with our allies in the muslim world if you want this temporary ban on muslims coming to the united states until the u.s. can figure out what's going on on the war on terror. >> whether it is a temporary ban or work in the middle east with our muslim friends and friends. and i have muslim friends. i have one in my office, successful person from the middle east, looked at me, said donald, what you're doing is so right, you're informing the world of a problem we have to solve. >> he agrees that muslims should be banned?
9:40 pm
>> i have spoken with a lot of muslim leaders, king abdullah, close friend of the united states and other moderate muslim leaders in the arab world. >> good person, good man. >> he is a very good man. >> friends of my daughter. >> when they hear you talk like that, they get upset. they are muslims. # >> i don't know. look, we have a problem. i tell you, we have a big problem where we let in thousands and thousands of people supposedly from syria, but have no idea where they're coming from, we have no idea. migration is a disaster. we are letting in thousands of people, they don't have documentation. they don't have paperwork. nobody knows who they are, where they come from, and they're coming into the country. >> you're with the temporary ban? >> until we figure out what's going on, we have to be tough, we have to be vigilant, yes. >> another issue, japan, south korea. >> not sensitive. not a sensitive issue. >> let them develop their own nuclear arsenal and get the u.s. out.
9:41 pm
>> why isn't that a sensitive issue? >> i have great relationships with south korea, i have buildings there, and in japan. lot of people don't know when i make speeches, i say we protect germany, japan, south korea. many sophisticated people in the audience didn't know that. they have to help us. we don't get reimbursed for what this massive amount of work and energy and weaponry, what it is costing. we can't continue to do it. this isn't 40 years ago. this isn't when we were much different as a country. they have to take care of us. i think they will. if not, you have to be prepared to walk. you always have to be prepared to walk. including the iran deal. which is a disaster. they should have walked. >> you're ready to let japan and south korea become nuclear powers? >> if they're not going to take care of us properly, we can't be the military and police for the world. we are the police for the world. policing the entire world.
9:42 pm
people look at our military, say wow, that's fantastic, they have many, many times, we spend many times what any country spends on military. it is not really for us. we are defending other countries. all i am saying is this, they have to pay. i am prepared to walk. if they have to defend themselves against north korea, we have a maniac over there, in my opinion if they don't take care of us properly, don't respect us enough to take care of us properly, then you know what has to happen, wolf, they have to defend themselves. >> the other day the military commander in south korea vincent brooks testified on capitol hill and said south korea pays for 50% of personnel cost. for u.s. troops. # >> how much percent? >> 50. >> why not 100.
9:43 pm
>> said maybe they won't have the bases in those countries. >> maybe we don't need them. we are protecting saudi arabia, i have many friends in saudi arabia. saudi arabia would not be there, wolf, wouldn't be there maybe for a month if we took our military out. the only reason they're protected and totally protected, we are protecting them. saudi arabia was making a billion a day when the oil prices were high, still making a fortune. why aren't they paying us? >> if the u.s. keeps troops in japan and there's thousands of them in korea. >> we have to get reimbursed. >> or germany, you want host countries to pick up all expense. >> of course they should pick up all the expense. why are we paying for this, paying to protect them. it is wonderful, rather do it rather than have them harmed, i would rather do it, and it was covered accurately in "the new york times." very accurately. they covered it because they talked cost.
9:44 pm
people like to say trump wants japan to arm. i don't want them to arm. i want them to reimburse us for at least the cost. you could say it is worth more than that. but at least reimburse for the cost. you say we pay 50%, if we say we pay 50%, that means we pay less, but we are losing tremendous amount of money and a military not in good shape. you know that, everybody knows that. we have to do something about it. up next, as soon as governor kasich and cruz dropped out, who will donald trump pick as vice president? >> do you think some of your former rivals, people that said nasty things about you? >> i feel differently about that. somebody says nasty. i never like them quite the same. if you've gone to extremes to escape your nasal allergies.

nominee is expecting to run against hillary clinton who seems poised to get the democratic nomination, the path all but impossible for bernie sanders at this point. mr. trump hasn't held elected office, he is a businessman that claims business acumen will serve him well in the foreign policy arena. not everyone agrees. - oop not everyone is convinced of that. >> robert gates says your lack of understanding of complexity of international affairs is worry some and added you don't understand the difference between a business negotiation and negotiation with sovereign powers. >> i don't think gates understands, he was also very disloyal to numerous people he worked for. i don't like people that write books and criticize everything, i don't think he understands the word loyalty. i believe i understand it much better than he does. our country right now is a debtor nation. we can't go around subsidizing

japan which is a behemouth at with the cars. you can't own a television set without going through south korea. the ships are made, it is an economic behemoth. we can't subsidize all these countries when we're a debtor nation. now, i will have great relationships, far better than we have now. look at the relationship with china. they're ripping off the united states, taking its money, ruining our jobs, ruining so much. and build a military fortress, massive military fortress in the middle of the south china seas. they're not supposed to be doing that. they have no respect for our country. >> are you saying that will change if you are president? >> they will respect our country and like our country better than they do now. >> talk about domestic policy issues. american workers. you say they deserve to earn more money, right? >> i want them to earn more money.
9:51 pm
>> bernie sanders says he wants $15 an hour minimum wage. and he is going after you lately for saying you're happy with $7.25, current federal minimum wage. you can't live on $7.25 an hour. >> no. i'm looking at that. very different from most republicans. you have to have something you can live on. what i'm looking to do is get people great jobs so they make much more money than that, so they make more money than the $15. if you start playing around too much with lower level number, you're not going to be competitive. >> hillary clinton is ready to go to $12. >> she's doing that because she's -- >> what would you recommend. >> i am looking at it. >> open to raising minimum wage. >> i am open to doing something. what i really like is bring our jobs back so they make much more. >> you want those bernie sanders supporters. >> i think i'll get them. >> you have to do something

about issues like that. >> well, i told you how i feel. i am going to bring jobs back to this country. nobody can do it like i can do it. i understand what's going wrong. hillary doesn't have a clue, bernie sanders is a socialist or more than that, could be beyond a socialist, and i am looking. >> but you want his supporters. >> yeah, i think i'll get a lot of his supporters. in the last election i won in a landslide in new york, the democrats went in, they wanted to vote for trump. people at the polling booth said it was the most incredible thing they've seen, you couldn't do it because it was a closed system. democrats said to people that run the polling booth, all over television, local television, said they wanted to vote for trump. didn't want to vote for hillary, they wanted to vote for trump. when the election comes, they'll be voting for me. >> give me qualifications you are looking for for a vice presidential running mate. >> you have to say the same boring answer everybody gives you from day one, have to potentially be a great president. that's always the number one thing. >> that's the most important fact. you need somebody potentially. >> there for that reason primarily. i would want somebody that would

help me from a legislative standpoint getting things passed through senate, through congress, to me that's why i think i go the political route, don't need the business route. i have it covered. >> somebody that's been a governor or senator? >> somebody that maybe is even a senator. look, we want to get legislation passed, we are in gridlock in washington. we can't take trillions of dollars overseas back. >> you're not going to give a name. you're going to start vetting people soon? >> starting to think about it. soon we will be vetting people. >> could some of your former rivals be on that list? >> could be. >> even people that said nasty things. >> when somebody says nasty, i never like them quite the same. but i will tell you, you look at somebody, you know, going to set up a committee. may put ben carson on the committee, chris christie on the committee. they came out early. they were very strong.
9:54 pm
very good people. >> people to vet? >> yes. we are going to set up a committee in terms of vice president, set up a committee in terms of other positions also. >> hillary clinton says she's released all her tax returns, you haven't. are you going to do that? >> i will. i really look forward to doing it. i am under order, when you are under audit -- >> the government. >> tax returns have already been audited. >> i go back a long time. they're called linking returns. they link. when i am under order, i don't want to do it. i hope to be able to do it. by the way, what's unfair, i have been audited every year, many years, beyond obama. >> you make a lot of money. >> i do make a lot of money, but i am audited every year. have friends that are wealthy and don't get audited. >> do you think there's aiming at you? >> i would say, yeah. i don't know. i am audited every single year.
9:55 pm
i have friends that are wealthy people. when i talk audit, they don't know what i am talking about. i am almost used to it like a normal thing. so many people never get audited, and i am audited every year. while i am under audit, i am not releasing tax returns. no lawyer would let you do that. it is routine ordered stuff, but no lawyer would let you do that. >> more of that interview ahead. inside strategy from the general election. >> do you think the general election campaign has already started, you versus hillary clinton, that for all practical purposes bernie sanders is out? >> well, i think what has happened, there's been a little flip. and i'm even surprised by it. i thought i would be going longer and she would be going shorter. she can't put it away like a football team can't get the ball over the line. i put it away. wanna drink more water?
