families, one by one knocked them out of the race. in the last 24 hours, the final two bowed out. today donald trump is the only one left standing. one person who doesn't seem to be daunted, hillary clinton. as i said, you'll hear from both candidates. we will start with secretary clinton who i sat down with a few hours ago. secretary clinton, thanks for joining us. >> good to talk to you. >> take us to last night, the moment ted cruz dropped out, you realized who the nominee for the republican party would be. >> well, it seemed pretty clear for some time how it was going to turn out, but i also know what it is like to keep fighting to the end because i did that in 2008 and something can always happen, but it didn't surprise me at all that it was over last night. >> assuming you get the democratic nomination are you ready for donald trump? i mean, he's already got an unflattering nickname for you, he is unlike any other candidate that you have certainly run

against, anybody has seen in a long time. >> you know, anderson, i have seen the presidency up close from two different perspectives and i think i know what it takes and i don't think we can take a risk, loose cannon like donald trump running the country. he said it is okay for other countries to get nuclear weapons, i think that's downright dangerous. he said wages are too high. i think we need to have a raise for the american people. raise the minimum wage, get wages back going up. i think when he says women should be punished for having abortions, that is just beyond anything i can imagine. >> he did walk that back. >> well, he is a loose cannon. he is somebody who has said so many things and i am sure they'll be scrambling, his advisers will be scrambling, but he already said all these things. said climate change is a chinese hoax and i think it is real. we have to pull the world

together and deal with it. you can go down a list, some of which he tried to bob and weave, but i think it is a risk, he is a loose cannon and loose cannons tend to misfire. >> if he is a loose cannon, he is willing to say things in a race against opponents, we have seen it already, that a lot of candidates were not prepared for on the g.o.p. side. are you ready for that? >> i've sort of been in the arena 25 years and i think yearly everything that could be thrown at somebody in politics and public life has come my way. >> you think you have a run against him. >> yes, but i am running my own campaign to be president, to deal with the economy, get it working again, take on all the barriers that stand in the way of getting people ahead. i have a clear mission for this campaign. >> a lot of folks on the gop side say they're running for issues as well and weren't able to --

>> they didn't have the experience, maybe they just didn't want to take him on on issues because they actually agreed with him. everybody in that republican primary didn't want to raise the minimum wage, don't believe equal pay is a problem, don't want to talk about climate change. a lot of the same views, so they were really trapped. they couldn't run a campaign on issues that matter to america and i can and i will. >> he talked about the economy last night, hitting an economic message that clearly he is going to echo going forward. he talked about your husband signing nafta when he called it in the history of the world single worst trade deal ever done. according to latest cnn polling out today by 50% to 45 margin, voters say trump would do a better job handling the economy than you would. he has an economic message that's appealing to people. >> we'll have to go back and talk about history. 23 million jobs in the 1990s, incomes went up for everybody.

he wants to argue against peace and prosperity he can do his best to make his case. i am going to talk about what we are going to do in the future, there are lessons we can learn. the economy does better with a democrat in the white house. saw the stark difference between my husband's presidency and george w. bush who went back to trickle down economics which is also what donald trump is advocating. then we saw barack obama have to rescue the economy from the failed economic policies of the republicans, so i'm more than happy to take that issue on and i think there's not only a lot of evidence on our side and certainly history on our side over the last 25 years, but any specifics that he has put out, you know, he makes these grand statements, grand accusations. at some point when you're running for president, you have to put a little meat on the bones, tell people what it is you're going to do and how you'll do it.

>> he runs a different campaign than anyone on the gop side. calls in reporters. is that something you'll do more? >> he did it and it worked for him. i think reporters now have a chance to ask some tougher questions. it is not enough to call in, give somebody a platform, it is now time to make the tough decisions and you got to ask him what exactly would you replace x, y and z, if you're against trade agreements, how does that work? i am for fair and free trade. i voted against some of the trade agreements that came before me when i was actually a senator, so let's get to the specifics. if you think wages are too high, how do you look americans in the eye and say i know you haven't had a raise for 15 years but i don't think you deserve one. if you have a budget that slashes taxes on the wealthy and throws our economy and federal budget into the worst downward

spiral of debt, tell us how that's going to work. i think it is time to get serious, the man is the presumptive nominee, and being a loose cannon doesn't in any way protect him i hope from being asked the hard questions that should have been asked in the primary process. >> wolf asked him about how he is going to run against you, whether he will change his tone. >> talk about will he be presidential. we had 17 people, all smart. one by one, week after week. boom boom boom. i don't want to change so much. i want to use that same strategy for trade deals. i feel i am a presidential person. >> same strategy you used on the republican candidates you want to use against hillary clinton? >> i would say yes, i mean again, a lot depends on how they treat me. if they treat me at a certain level, you've seen i am a counter puncher, i don't like hitting people first.

i don't know how, i always felt i am better, certain boxers are better counter punchers. >> he says he is a counter puncher. how scorched earth is this race going to be. >> he is the one making that decision, anderson, not me. he is the one running the campaign, insulting people, demeaning women, degrading people with disabilities, talking about keeping muslims out of the country. he's the one running that kind of negative, aggressive bullying campaign. he can choose to run whatever campaign he wants to run. i'm going to keep staying on the campaign i am running. i have more than 3 million votes over senator sanders and i have 2 million votes over donald trump. i am going to keep telling people what i will do as president and keep being specific because i think people want to know what you're going to do and can hold you accountable that way. >> elizabeth warren said donald trump built his campaign on racism, sexism, xenophobia. do you agree?

something you said back in march, you said we're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business, a statement you apologized for in west virginia saying it was out of context. trump is saying you'll say placate -- >> that's a broad misrepresentation. i have been very clear. we have to make a transition to clean, renewable energy. i have been clear for the campaign we can't do it in a way that totally leaves behind people who dug out the coal to turn on the lights and to power our factories. 100,000 coal miners in this country lost their lives in the 20th century, so i want people to pay attention to what we as a nation need to do to support them, but the market is making this decision. the market has driven down the cost of coal, so you have companies going bankrupt.

so what i'm offering is a $30 billion plan to really revitalize and provide support for coal miners and their families, and that's the least they owe these people. >> they're worried about you against trump, that you're not ready for whatever he may throw at you, that he's brought up a lot of stuff about people that nobody could have predicted. quoting from "national enquirer" just yesterday, he's made references to your marriage to your husband. >> well, he's not the first one, anderson. i can't say this often enough. if he wants to go back to the play book of the 1990s, wants to follow in the footsteps of those that tried to knock me down, take me out of the political arena, i am more than happy to have him to that. >> you're ready for that. >> oh, please.

this is to me a classic case of a blustering, bullying guy who has knocked out of the way all the republicans because they were just dumbfounded, they didn't know how to deal with him, they couldn't take him on on the issues because they basically agreed with him, and didn't know how to counter punch. >> do you think they waited too long? >> you have to ask them. i can only tell you the campaign i am going to run. the campaign i will run is about what we do in the future. i invite republicans and independents i have been seeing on the campaign trail, who have been reaching out to me, i invite them to join with democrats. let's get on the american team, get off the red or blue team, let's get on the american team. we have great opportunities ahead of us. i happen to believe america's best years can still be ahead of us. i have that confidence, i am optimistic, but it doesn't

happen just by wishing for it or being a demagogue. it happens by rolling up our sleeves and getting to work to seize it. >> when you were a senator, did trump engage you on substance? he said he gave money for access. did he ever ask you for favors? >> not that i recall. i don't recall that. he has played all sides of the political arena. that is his choice. he can explain it how he choose. # i have been consistent about where i stand going back to when i started working as a lawyer for the children's defense fund. i am going to do everything i can to even the odds against people that feel the odds are stacked against them. i'm going to give it my all, to give every person, particularly every child in this country, the chance to live up to his or her god given potential. >> senator sanders takes issue with them calling you the presumptive nominee on the democratic side. what do you say to his supporters. should you be considered the presumptive nominee at this

point? >> i am not calling myself that, i know there are contests ahead. i respect senator sanders in whatever choice he takes. i have a lot of empathy about this. i ran to the end in 2008. >> you have been there, you know what it feels like. >> i won nine out of the last 12 contests. people forget that. i won indiana, i won west virginia, i won a lot of states. but i couldn't close the gap in pledge delegates. the gap between me and senator sanders is far wider than it was between me and senator obama. >> having been in his shoes, what do you say? >> i know he said last week that he will do everything he can to prevent donald trump from being president of the united states, work seven days a week. i am going to really count on that because i want to unify the party. i am going to be reaching out to his supporters who have far more in common with me and my supporters than they do with donald trump and his campaign.

>> one more question. donald trump talked about what he would look for in a vice president, someone with congressional experience to reach out to congress. obviously i'm not asking you who you would pick, but what qualities would you look for? is there something you would like to kind of -- a space you would like to fill in? >> i think the most important quality is that this person could become president on a moment's notice. there is no more important quality than that. and i intend to take that very seriously and find a person that i would have the confidence in to be a good partner with me, but most importantly to be a really good president for america. >> secretary clinton, thanks very much. >> thanks, anderson. >> she already has given some indication for the jabs. he called her crooked, said she's playing the woman card. and wouldn't have 5% of the vote if she were a man. # called it disgusting she took a bathroom break, just to name a few. to learn anything about trump

>> be honest, did you ever think last year in june in this building, you were going down the escalator, you would be the presumptive republican nominee? >> i hoped. >> did you really hope? >> yeah, i did. you have 17 people, very capable people. i heard a lot of pundits saying it was the single greatest group of talent ever assembled for either party in terms of a group, also the largest group. i joined somewhat after i heard that statement. i am saying what am i doing, hearing these people -- >> did you really think you could win? >> i guess, otherwise i don't think i would have done it. >> some thought did you it for publicity, a win. >> i don't need publicity. i gave up a lot to do it. i was asked to do "the apprentice" two more years, said i am not going to do it. gave up a tremendous amount, got controversial, i lost some licenses, not the bigs deal in

>> i have spoken with a lot of muslim leaders, king abdullah, close friend of the united states and other moderate muslim leaders in the arab world. >> good person, good man. >> he is a very good man. >> friends of my daughter. >> when they hear you talk like that, they get upset. they are muslims. # >> i don't know. look, we have a problem. i tell you, we have a big problem where we let in thousands and thousands of people supposedly from syria, but have no idea where they're coming from, we have no idea. migration is a disaster. we are letting in thousands of people, they don't have documentation. they don't have paperwork. nobody knows who they are, where they come from, and they're coming into the country. >> you're with the temporary ban? >> until we figure out what's going on, we have to be tough, we have to be vigilant, yes. >> another issue, japan, south korea. >> not sensitive. not a sensitive issue. >> let them develop their own nuclear arsenal and get the u.s. out.

the republican primary race effectively ended last night in indiana. now the presumptive republican

nominee is expecting to run against hillary clinton who seems poised to get the democratic nomination, the path all but impossible for bernie sanders at this point. mr. trump hasn't held elected office, he is a businessman that claims business acumen will serve him well in the foreign policy arena. not everyone agrees. - oop not everyone is convinced of that. >> robert gates says your lack of understanding of complexity of international affairs is worry some and added you don't understand the difference between a business negotiation and negotiation with sovereign powers. >> i don't think gates understands, he was also very disloyal to numerous people he worked for. i don't like people that write books and criticize everything, i don't think he understands the word loyalty. i believe i understand it much better than he does. our country right now is a debtor nation. we can't go around subsidizing

japan which is a behemouth at with the cars. you can't own a television set without going through south korea. the ships are made, it is an economic behemoth. we can't subsidize all these countries when we're a debtor nation. now, i will have great relationships, far better than we have now. look at the relationship with china. they're ripping off the united states, taking its money, ruining our jobs, ruining so much. and build a military fortress, massive military fortress in the middle of the south china seas. they're not supposed to be doing that. they have no respect for our country. >> are you saying that will change if you are president? >> they will respect our country and like our country better than they do now. >> talk about domestic policy issues. american workers. you say they deserve to earn more money, right? >> i want them to earn more money.

about issues like that. >> well, i told you how i feel. i am going to bring jobs back to this country. nobody can do it like i can do it. i understand what's going wrong. hillary doesn't have a clue, bernie sanders is a socialist or more than that, could be beyond a socialist, and i am looking. >> but you want his supporters. >> yeah, i think i'll get a lot of his supporters. in the last election i won in a landslide in new york, the democrats went in, they wanted to vote for trump. people at the polling booth said it was the most incredible thing they've seen, you couldn't do it because it was a closed system. democrats said to people that run the polling booth, all over television, local television, said they wanted to vote for trump. didn't want to vote for hillary, they wanted to vote for trump. when the election comes, they'll be voting for me. >> give me qualifications you are looking for for a vice presidential running mate. >> you have to say the same boring answer everybody gives you from day one, have to potentially be a great president. that's always the number one thing. >> that's the most important fact. you need somebody potentially. >> there for that reason primarily. i would want somebody that would

very good people. >> people to vet? >> yes. we are going to set up a committee in terms of vice president, set up a committee in terms of other positions also. >> hillary clinton says she's released all her tax returns, you haven't. are you going to do that? >> i will. i really look forward to doing it. i am under order, when you are under audit -- >> the government. >> tax returns have already been audited. >> i go back a long time. they're called linking returns. they link. when i am under order, i don't want to do it. i hope to be able to do it. by the way, what's unfair, i have been audited every year, many years, beyond obama. >> you make a lot of money. >> i do make a lot of money, but i am audited every year. have friends that are wealthy and don't get audited. >> do you think there's aiming at you? >> i would say, yeah. i don't know. i am audited every single year.
