republican presidential candidate says he will not attend the republican convention this center. on the democratic side it's full speed ahead for hillary clinton and bernie sanders. they are on the campaign trail once again today as is donald trump. the messages are clear. trump is hitting clinton, clinton is hitting trump, and sanders is hitting both of themes he keeps pushing ahead to the democratic convention. west virginia is next up for the democrats this coming tuesday. kentucky and oregon are the other big prizes before we all go to california on june 7th. republicans, meanwhile are coming to grips with donald trump as their presumptive presidential nominee. and miss shifting his campaign into general election mode. let's bring in our panel. our chief politicalist analyst gloria borger and mea malika henderson. gloria, he has named a new national campaign chairman, finance chairman, to go out there and raise money, steve

mnuchin. this is significant. >> very significant. don't forget donald trump has spent the entire campaign calling his opponents puppets, that's the word, puppets because they relied on super pacs for their funding. he has also got a super pac now. we have to wait and see how donald trump is going to raise money. he is obviously going to put some of his own money into this. but he understand whaz a juggernaut he is up against with the delts. but it does represent a huge change for donald trump. and we're going to have to see, will he say okay i'm going to limit those contributions to $100? i'm going to make them $27 like bernie sanders. will they be $1,000? he still has to be able to make the case he is not bought and sold. that's the case he was making against his opponents. he has been making it against hillary clinton. >> individual contributions can go up to $2700, something like that. >> will he limit that? will he make it lower? i mean we're going to have to

wait and see. because they are going to need the money to compete with hillary clinton. >> do you want to weigh in on that? >> i think that's right. if you look at $2012, a billion a piece, mitt romney and barack obama in terms of running for the white house. donald trump is in i think a bit of a pickle here, not only in term of the branding and what it means now for his brand that he is going to raise money. but he is also behind because you have had hillary clinton and the democrats really shaking the money for -- >> eight months. >> shaking the trees for nun and being successful and raising it and building the infrastructure. i think it will be interesting to see whether or not donald trump, sort the small money donations -- he was able to do some of that on twitter, raised $12 million that way. >> they are going to need more than that. >> the hillary victory fund has raised $60 million. it is a lot of money. >> he is suggest he may need a billion dollars to be competitive against hillary clinton. >> he is very wealthy, as he

tells us, but how much of his money -- he says he has put over $30 million into this campaign. >> yeah. >> there is going to be a question how much he is willing to spend personally. >> mitt romney not attending the republican convention in cleveland this coming july. we know that john mccain will be attending. neither of the bush presidents will be attending. is this a statement they are making? >> i think it is. mitt romney already said public publicly, gave a speech against donald trump, said he is not going to vote for donald trump. we don't know if he is going to vote for a third party candidate. i'm assuming he is -- you know, i don't know about hillary clinton, but not going to theson convention is a statement. and i think you know, it's quite stunning. >> and now we're also hearing that there are some republicans out there who can't, you know, stomach voting for donald trump or hillary clinton for that matter. they are looking for a third party candidate, senator ben sass of nebraska, he posted this on facebook, why are we confined

to these two terrible options? >> this is america. if both choices stink, we reject them and go big he. that's what we do. is that really a viable option, though, a third party independent candidate? >> i mean the problem right now seems to be who would that be? right? i mean never mind all of the red tape that they would have to cut through and terms of getting on state ballots, in raising the money and all of that. it's who would it be? ben sass doesn't seem to be coming forward. he seems to be raising the idea. bill crystal for a while talked about jim maddis, this general who also seems to be reluctant. but there seems to be moftd around his candidacy. he seems not to be interested. if there is a third party candidate, i think we know what would half. it would be very likely that it could give the general election to hillary clinton. and if they do that, i mean it's sort of their ultimate way of stopping donald trump. so we'll see if they are able to get this together. >> quickly gloria, if there is a

third party candidate -- i don't know if they could put that together, but let's say somebody impressive does energe and prevents the republican or democratic nominee to reach the candidates from getting 1237 delegates. then it goes to the house of representatives. presumely the republican nominee would be elected in the house of representatives. >> i think there is such an intense debate going on inside the republican party right now about whether you do this or as the wall street journal wrote say to the people you had your shot, you lost, and now let's reconstitute the republican party. but you know, there is the eric erickson group who says you know what, we owe it the ourselves to run somebody else. >> gloria, thank you very much. a year ago donald trump wasn't even in the presidential

conversation. but in june, he jumped in the race, throwing the political machine on its ear, if you will. then it was a quick and controversial rise to the top of the republican field. and a campaign that left a lot of us with some truly unforgettable moments. >> i am officially running for president of the united states. and we are going to make our country great again. when mexico sends its people, they are bringing drugs, they are bringing crime. they are rapists. i will build a great, great wall and i will have mexico pay for that wall. >> i'm not going to pay for that [ bleep ] wall. >> how are you going to make them pay for the wall? >> i will, and the wall just got ten feet taller. believe me. >> you have called women you don't like fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals.

>> i think we'll study this for years. i think it's important to remember this guy as a huge celebrity even though he wasn't a politician when he launched his cane. and the campaign, let's remember there was a bit of a national joke to begin w. he mastered the media. he brings a markian genius's eye to politics. before he tap into the zeitgeist of this election, this feeling that washington's elite deserted the americans, they don't understand what they are thinking, feeling, saying. and donald trump was the only candidate able to do that in the early stage. i think that's why his campaign caught fire and that's why he was able to prevail ultimately in the primary. >> he eviscerated 16 other politicians, many of whom have excellent resumes, elect sd officials. did they underestimate him? >> i think everybody underestimated donald trump. if you look back to the beginning of this campaign,

nobody thought that donald trump would be able to do what he did. if you look at the candidates who -- let's remember, this was seen as the most talented republican field in a generation with rising stars. people were talking about two or three potential president inside this field when we first started out back last year in new hampshire and iowa. what trump was able to do was they didn't attack him until it was too late. their campaigns were in mortal danger by the time they got wise to what was happening and it was too late. we saw it with ted cruz this week in indiana. >> you say he revolutionized the way campaigns are won n. what w way? >> he basically had a campaign -- he didn't have a lot of money men, didn't have pollster, didn't have a grassroots organization in many of the states early on. that's the traditional way the campaigns have been run. that's why many thought his fire would burn out. he based the campaign around social media, around his personality, about his ability

donald trump has no more opponents on the republican side while hillary clinton still has to compete with bernie sanders. that doesn't mean hillary clinton isn't already focusing in on donald trump. here with me is the labor

bargaining. and the differences between secretary clinton and the inclusive campaign that she is running and the divisive campaign that mr. trump is running couldn't be more stark. >> he wants to deport the 11 million illegal ale aliens and let the good ones come back: she says she wants to grant them -- >> 100 day priority for donald trump is deport people. that's not who we are as a nation. that's not who we are as a nation, to ban muslims from coming into the country. i've spent a long time as a civil rights lawyer working with the muslim community. donald trump today talks about banning muslims, you know, a generation ago, in that same community in tennessee that i worked a few years ago, they were trying to ban catholics. we've been to this movie. it's a movie that's always been inconsistent with american values. that's why secretary clinton is standing up for incompletion and

the opportunities that she want to give to everybody. >> yesterday when i interviewed him in new york at trump tower he reiterated his position there should be a temporary ban on muslims coming to the u.s. until the united states could figure out the issue of terrorism. >> i hope he is talking with the muslims who are serving in our armed forces and asking them what they think. >> we had an interesting he can change on raising the nation's federal minimum wage. i'll play that for you. >> you are happy with $25, the current federal minimum wage. you can't live on $7.25 in america. >> i'm actually looking at that. i'm very different from most republicans. you have to have something that you can live on. what i'm really looking to do is get people great jobs so they make much more money than that. so they make much more than the $15. >> if you were president what would you -- >> i'm a' looking into night but you are opening to raising

minimum wage. >> i'm open to doing something with it. >> i think that's the first time he said he is open to raising the federal -- now. hillary clinton says something like $12. bernie sanders says $15. >> nobody who works the full-time job should live in poverty. it's laughable to look at that quote. a headline from a year ago, donald trump, quote, having a low minimum wage is not a bad thing for this country. >> now he says he is open to raising it. he says he's looking at it. >> wow. i'm stunned by his campaign conversions. donald trump is a loose cannon, indeed. donald trump when the unions were organizing at the hotels in las vegas, donald trump fought that tooth and nail. donald trump doesn't stand for increasing the minimum wage. donald trump needs to talk to the people that i meet day in and day out.

the woman i met in detroit who slept in her car the night before -- she slept in her car with her three children because they didn't make ends meet. that's what hillary clinton is all about, making sure people can earn a liflible wage. she has been consistent in showing she can break down barriers not only by raising minimum wage. >> you are a strong sporter of hillary clinton had. i know you are, the cnn orc poll we did this week question who had would better handling the economy. donald trump 50%. hillary clinton 45%. that's disturbing from your perspective? >> well, once the american people understand the trump train wreck, the trump train wreck on minimum wage where you are telling a working mom that $7.25 an hour is not a bad thing for america. the trump train wreck, where his education plan, if it's anything like trump university, that's an

everything he can to prevent donald trump from being president of the united states. he will work seven days a week. i'm going to really count on that because i want to unify the party. i'm certainly going to be reaching out to his supporters who have far more in common with me and my supporters than they do with donald trump and his campaign. >> bakari, you are a hillary clinton supporter. do you think senator sanders should use the platform he has right now to go after donald trump, especially since trump is making it clear he eventually wants to seek some of senator sanders' supporters? >> i think he will do that, wolf. one thing that we do understand is that bend has every right to stay in this race as long as possible. hillary clinton didn't get out of the raise until june 7th of the 2008. bernie sanders can keep plugging along up lifting the populous message, rallying the thousands and turning his sights and his targets on donald trump. i anticipate this being a coalescing of our party. unlike what you see on the republican side. and the main already you already

started to see elizabeth warren coming out attacking trump. you will see bernie sanders and his wife on that same stage along with barack obama and michelle obama, bill and hillary clinton, our party is ready for war in november. they are. >> you have heard prominent republicans saying they can't he vote for trump or hillary clinton. they want a third party. >> the democrats are ready for war. that's why the republicans need to get their act together. chairman priebus has been talking about unity. you have to sit and wonder, these republicans are talking about a third party which by the way would guarantee a defeat of the republicans. and those of them sitting there saying they are not going to be a part of the movement or cannot support donald trump -- what is your real intentions? >> it's obvious if you look at it, the american people, the republicans have spoken and they picked up. the primary season is over. 17 options out there, folks, the reality check is mr. trump was

number one across the board from the very day he announced. don't insult his supporters and sit there and say their voice doesn't count and that yours as a politician is better valuable than theirs. i am hoping the republicans grow up and get on the trump train. >> bakari, you agree that whoever the democratic nominee is, look like it's going to be hillary clinton, you can't underestimate donald trump. the other republican candidates did, and look what that got them. >> i think what you are starting to see already is our ground game is unfoaling. hillary clinton has general election staff in states like ohio, florida, virginia, colorado. she has already spent -- the dnc has already given $200,000 to virginia and ohio and other democratic states to help strengthen that operation. we have a ground unit in place. we are prepare forth the general election. no one is taking donald trump lightly. the fact remains that hillary

it was fierce 12-hour fire fight in iraq that led to the death of a u.s. navy s.e.a.l. now the guardian newspaper exclusively obtained this cell phone video of the battle. [ gunfire ] . >> the pentagon says 31-year-old navy s.e.a.l. charles keating the fourth while killed while helping rescue u.s. military advisers in that attack. jim sciutto has been following this story for us. tell us what happened here. was it a surprise attack? >> defense secretary ash carter told cnn yes it was a surprise attack. but we're also told it was a sophisticated attack. they broke through the isis fighters through the kurdish

forces lines using bulldozers, truck bombs used to break through berms and barriers, et cetera? >> and multiple isis fighters broke through. this is an incredible view from inside that fire fight. this took place two miles inside those kurdish lines. they not only were able to penetrate the lines but get closer to this town where this took place. it shows the danger and the ability even though they are under pressure from the anti-isis coalition. >> has the pentagon commented on this incident? the northeast s.e.a.l.s are supposed to be there for assistance but this looks like combat. >> we've seen these lines blurred for month. i spoke with the spokesman for the anti-isis coalition in baghdad. i said listen they are advise, assist, but they are a couple miles from the front lines which invariably puts them close to

combat. i said there are 4,000 roops troops now in iraq. how many american troops are close to the front lines in these roles? he says a few hundred. the fact is as that advise and assist role brings them closer to combat, u.s. forces will be closer thou combat. as this advance on mosul begins to set up, they are going forward deployed u.s. advisors close to the front lines in what promises to be a very fierce battle. when that happens they may not be called combat ground troops but they do end up in combat as we saw here. >> jim, stand by. jim has a cnn exclusive for us as well under the new arms race under sea as he goes on board a u.s. nuclear submarine on patrol as tensions simmer underneath the surface. blues polling shows even more danger is isis is

in a new cnn orc poll released this hour it appears americans are now more positive about the fight against isis

over all. 46% saying the military action against isis forces in iraq and syria is going well. while 57% say the u.s. military response to isis has not been aggressive enough, that sentiment is also on the decline, down from 68%. let's look closer. global affairs analyst kimberly dozier is with us. to what do you attribute the shift in these numbers? >> a couple of things. the way the story is being told and the incremental progress the coalition is making on the ground. the white house decided a couple of months ago they were going to start rolling out more generalities, more u.s. officials, more bereavings on what the coalition was doing on the ground to declassify as much as possible to show the american people that some progress was being made. now we've seen everything from the loss of territory, isis's loss of some towns.

they also haven't had any campaign where they gained territory though u.s. officials still say it's holding at approximately 40% of their territory lost since the coalition campaign began. >> interesting, the same poll, the cnn orc poll, we asked does isis have terroristser already 78% say they believe isis does have terrorists in the united states. it was 81% back in december. frankly i'm sort of surprised it is not even higher than that given the fear that's out there right now. >> you do also have a number of administration officials explaining the process that there are people getting radicalized over the webb and the kind of attacks we've seen in brussels and paris could eventually happen here. but they say they think that they've caught and are watching most of the people who have traveled to syria and come back. and since then, tightened up monitoring and tightened up access to the war zone. >> i think this poll was taken before we learned of this u.s.

navy s.e.a.l. who was killed in this fight that's been doing on in syria. if there are more u.s. casualties, the numbers in these kinds of polls will shift dramatically? >> i could change. and you are going to see more special operations forces as the secretary announced heading to the war don't doing this quote, unquote, advice/assist mission. what a lot of americans are learning that means they are often in the trenches with the people doing the fighting, not taking as much of the risk but still very much in harm's way. but that's why u.s. first have also tried to stress some of the gains they have made with the special operations forces. i just reported last week that the joint special operations command plus other special operations force together have taken 40 special operations planners, off the battlefield trying to show the american people there is a reason for putting these troops in harm's way. >> kimberly does dozier,

>> reporter: the "uss missouri" nuclear attack submarine. sailing to exercises in a deep dive off florida. the atlantic is on the front lines of a new cold war. we joined for an exclusive embark. the "uss missouri" is an attack submarine. it can launch torpedoes as other submarines, launch missiles at ground targets. gathers intelligence, can deploy navy s.e.a.l. units for special operations. it is the most advanced submarine in the world. and it is facing the most advanced threats to u.s. submarine forces in decades. russia is deploying attack sub that arenas in numbers and with aggressiveness and advances in technology not seen since the cold war. and now china, north korea, vietnam, india and others are joining a new arms race under the sea. commodore lewis commands ten subs including the "missouri."

>> operating places we didn't have to rely on an adversary being there to challenge us. that's changing. we have to now consider that there's an adversary ready to challenge us and then undersea superiority is not guaranteed. >> reporter: new threats require a new state of readiness which we witnessed at every turn. >> 2-5 and 8. >> commence launch. >> reporter: the 135 crew repeatedly train for anti-submarine warfare. >> fire! >> reporter: they simulate firing torpedoes and cruise missiles from depth towards targets on sea and land. >> torpedo course 337, unite running. wire good. >> reporter: they're constantly testing the speed and maneuverability. >> we're in the midst of the another steep ascent. you're hearing that alarm approaching 20 degrees. we're geng do get to 25-degree angle. keep in mind, i'm standing up straight now.

but as i'm leaning forward, that's keeping me vertical in relation to the ground as the angle gets sharper. these are exercises but the "missouri" the mightily mo to the crew is nose to nose with real world threats. russia annexed crimea and launched military action in syria, the "missouri" was deployed nearby and when a russian sub turned up off the coast of florida in 2012, it is the "uss missouri" called into action to track it. >> that's showing, hey, where they can go. >> see, i think it's operational experience. if anything to happen they have experience. they know those waters. i don't think it's a political statement on their part at all. >> reporter: the "missouri's" greatest asset may be the silence. >> dive, dive. >> reporter: giving the u.s. the element of surprise. >> whether there is a submarine there or not they don't know.

a potential adversary has to take that into the calculus. >> reporter: and so underwater is where the boats and their crews spend 90% of of their time deployed. "uss missouri" is coming into port now, may port, naval port station in florida and not something if you're a submariner you do very often. most recent deployment, out for 181 days, 163 days were at sea. that is the life of a submariner. that is a call to action the u.s. navy's 70 submarines are getting more and more often. >> and jim's joining us now live. excellent report, jim. how do the u.s. subs compare to the russian subs? >> reporter: u.s. commanders, u.s. officials, they're confident the u.s. has an advantage but when you dig down, they're not convinced that advantage is so great because of enormous investment by russia and others and a new class

that's harder for u.s. subs like the "missouri" to track and concerned, concerned they have to invest a lot, exercise a lot, you have more players, china, north korea, you name it. >> is the u.s. navy concerned that some russian subs increasingly gotten very close to the u.s. coast? >> reporter: the last time -- it's been public, during the election in 2012.
