tv Smerconish CNN May 7, 2016 3:00pm-4:01pm PDT
3:00 pm
but i think 1 million is even better. >> here's a look at tonight's lineup here on cnn. next, "smerconish" followed by cnn quiz show '80s edition and then the series "the 80s." thanks for being with us. have a great night. i'm michael smerconish and stop trump to deal with trump. that was the journey this week by the gop, the media, america and me. with cruz and kasich dropping out, the donald is the last can the gop civil war continues and several leader swear that they will not vote for him. now the news that mitt romney is trying to get a third party candidate to run against trump. is that possible at this point?
3:01 pm
unhappy voters are already have a third party candidate. the ballot could look like this. i will talk to the man that everyone is suddenly googling. trump's idea of outreach is to eat mexican food downstairs at the trump you tower. the internet went crazy. did it work? i'll talk to the former mexican president. after all of the worry of a brokered gop convention, surprise. it looks likely for the democrats thanks to bernie sanders. first, did paul ryan hurt donald trump or help him? the republican house speaker stunned observers when here on cnn thursday he said that he was not ready to endorse presumptive nominee trump for president. conventional wisdom says that this harms trump. after all, ryan will preside this summer in cleveland and looks like he is setting the tone for not accepting trump as is. "the new york times" claims it's an unfixable divide.
3:02 pm
i think that ryan has don the donald a favor. he has done the opportunity. ryan's announcement followed the news the gop's two most recent presidents and its two most presidential candidates will not attend the convention, and that other prominent republicans, including lindsey graham and bush are saying that they will not support trump. more like john mccain, kelly i out have become contortionists. they say that they will vote for him but not support him. to compete in the fall, trump needs to improve the standing and not with just the you leaders but with the voters. he received more than ten million vote but was that's only 40% of the gop votes thus far. he remains deeply unpopular among some americans. 24% of americans disapprove of trump. and a cnn/orc poll shows that 56 percent see him as unfavorable. he is trailing with clinton head to head.
3:03 pm
how can ryan's rebuke help him? if trump can get ryan to come around. this week ryan and trump will meet in washington, and ryan left open the door for a future endorsement and saying perhaps in the future we can work together and come to an agreement on what is best for the american people. here is the thing, ryan is speaking for many whose concern need to be addressed for trump to win. if ryan's concerns can be concerned about trump can be satisfied on issues like nato and trade and entitlements, that might encourage others to take a second look at presumptive nominee. of course, for that to work, trump needs to care about why ryan disapproves of him. his tweet suggests that's not how he sees it. quote, paul ryan said that i inherited something very special, the republican party. wrong! i didn't inherit it, i won it with millions of voters! joining me is charlie from pennsylvania. charlie, you heard my thoughts, what are yours?
3:04 pm
>> well, i said the same thing that paul ryan said a day earlier. i too have concerns about donald trump's candidacy. right now the ball is in his court to mend fences, he has a lot to do to unify the party. he said last week that he did not need to unify the party. i think that he does. paul ryan is a very serious, thoughtful policy guy. he's a policy wonk, and he feels strongly. he is principle and wants to advance it. i think that donald trump has had very were few and sparse policy positions and the ones he's had has been conflicted or contradictory at times. i think that's a great concern for the speaker. it's not only a concern for the speaker and then not many others for congress and then a lot of voters around the country. >> well, you're making my point if he can satisfy paul ryan, there could be others, like charlie dent, who come along as well.
3:05 pm
now, there's a contrary argument and rush limbaugh articulated it. let's listen. if trump in order to get ryan's support, moves to the republican agenda, it's not good for trump. that would be an error. trump is where he is precisely because he's not perceived as being part of that. >> charlie, doesn't limbaugh have a point, saddling up to the establish, to the extent you're in that category, all of a sudden he alienates the base that got him thus far. that's the conundrum for trump. >> well with, i would perhaps disagree with rush limbaugh on that point. look at foreign policy. donald trump has talked about withdrawing from nato. that's a huge mistake approximate for the alliance. it's the centerpiece for the national security and foundation and nuclearizing asia, japan,
3:06 pm
south korea, not a good idea. he has talked about a number of other issues on that regard that are settling to me and the foreign policy statement week or so ago america first from the 1930s, i think that a lot of americans and thoughtful republicans you including so many in the base would have the concerns on the policy approximate positions. that's the things that paul ryan wants to talk about as well as economic isolation which many of us think is a failed course of action. >> how about the argument that says, wait a minute, paul ryan, you're the speaker of the house, the republican speaker of the house, the chairman of the upcoming convention, either get on board or get out of the way? >> well, yeah, paul, his job, to a certain extent, he's tried to play switzerland to a certain degree. he feels that he has an
3:07 pm
obligation to be fair to all of the candidates and i think he was in the process. he at times did speak out against some of of donald trump's incendiary comments on muslims and after the david duke debacle, he felt he had to do that. now there's a nominee, i feel that paul ryan is correct, the nominee needs to listen to folks like the speaker who are serious about setting a thoughtful, aspirational message for the party. that's one of the reasons that i supported john kasich. he had a message and campaign forward looking. donald trump needs to develop that kind of message if he is going to get support, unify the republican party. >> congressman charlie dent, thank you, as always, for being here. >> thank you, michael. go lehigh. >> tweet me. i will read some of them later in the program. >> can trump turn the paul ryan flap to his advantage?
3:08 pm
joining me now is bob beckel and e.d. hill. who needs who verses ryan and trump? >> i think that they're both helping each other. both of them answered the questions in an honest way. you look pandering and you look false and fake and phony, if one second you hate a person and then the next second you say, oh, he's the nominee, i love him, i love him. we don't believe it. if they get together and share and talk and then come out and say that we're supporting each other, that rings true. >> e.d., what to rush's point, to say that trump runs the risk of alienating the constituency that brought him to the dance? >> excuse me, the conventional wisdom has been shown to be absolutely wrong this entire election cycle. we think and we go to the wings where we want to win a primary. we come to the middle when we want to win general elections. he went to the primary and won. and he didn't get the wings. you but he, like reagan, is looking for ways to unify
3:09 pm
america instead of just focussing on the selection of one party. >> bob beckel, i want to show you a map that "the new york times" put together, color coded to show what would happen if the race took place today as between hillary clinton and donald trump. it shows that relative to votes, 347 for hillary, 190 for donald trump. what's the path for trump? >> it's dark and loney and it doesn't exist, as far as i'm concerned, but listen, what ryan did was exactly the right thing to do. he knows that he needs some leverage. he wants to endorse him and get something out of him. they will get it. he is going to be for trump when he gets to the convention. what i did not understand is why trump's people dumped on ryan and said he want a good speaker. i mean that was a perfect opportunity the say okay, i understand. we have not gotten along, let's see if we can sit down and iron out some policy differences and i think we can find some common ground.
3:10 pm
did he do that? no. he had his spokes group say he was a lousy speaker. the other thing is that trump looks out of the crowds and thinks that's americans. it's a small sliver of this electorate. he's gotten 10 million votes. he needs 60 million or 70 million to win. he has not gotten that. no way. >> here is the problem. that maybe the way that some people look at it. i look at it and i see the unions that are coming out out and supporting trump. you have the service employees international union, they were supporting trump. their president came out and said she was very concerned that trump would win the general election because of union support. and that's what ronald reagan got from the teamsters. >> bob beckel, you talk about trump looking out at rallies and saying things. he has a new nickname for a player in the race, elizabeth warren. listen to what the donald said to the senator of massachusetts.
3:11 pm
>> i just learned that crooked hillary, along with her friend, you know she's got this goofy friend named elizabeth warren, she's on a twitter rant, she's a goofus, she's a goofus. ever see her? this woman, she's a basket case. >> beckel, i haven't heard goofus since seventh or eighth grade. >> me neither. >> say it. every time that he does this he goes out and campaigns for hillary. do you realize that all of the people out there are furious with trump and going to be out there beating him up, including bernie sanders. i tell you, you know, with respect to the employees -- service employees, that's who trump's casinos, union employees, no other union's going to go with him. this guy's going to get trumped. trumped by trump. >> the union worker that work for him are the ones supporting him. that speaks volume. >> e.d. why is it so effective
3:12 pm
when it's lyin' ted, little marco, doofus, crooked, so forth? he has an era ten u eighted to what is his constituency wants to hear. >> you know what, there are a lot of americans who have teenagers and if you have a teenager you hear them say something, it hits the sky, next day it's the best friend again. a lot of us take that with a grain of salt. when i look at it, i don't think that, but it made me chuckle. it's silly. >> here is what it made me think. it made me think presuming that secretary clinton who is the nominee, among the chief criteria for her in selecting a vp needs to be someone who is willing to go out and take him on. you know that labor secretary thomas perez, bob beckel, is now on that short list or so it is said. i just asked him how he would pursue that role. watch this -- you are the secretary of labor, here in your personal capacity,
3:13 pm
we make that clear. there's a show on tv "dirty jobs" ever seen it. >> no, i haven't. >> no i'm too busy working and coach my kids. >> it's a television show on people that do dirty jobs. it seems to me that her pick for vp, one of the criteria is the dirty job of getting in the ring with him constantly. are you up for that task? >> well, i have had a lot of time working on the gak of a trash truck and i'm proud of all of 0 jobs i've had. what every job is entitled to in the country is dignity. >> mr. beckel, he once worked on the back of a trash truck. that could be good practice for what's coming. >> i did, too. i got fired, but i worked on it. the idea of taking hispanics is so typical of the democratic party. we have to get out of this in identity politics. there's one person that he needs to get and their shared brown
3:14 pm
from ohio. he is a pit bull and will take after trump. he should. trump does not have all of these munchkins on stage. he's going to have a serious player and hillary clinton who will i think debate him very well. but out there, he's going to have barack obama, joe biden, elizabeth warren, i mean, this guy's picking up more candidates to go out and beat him up than anybody i've ever seen. >> i have to say this, to bob's point, i had a poll on my website, no science, but plenty of intuition and i asked people who listen to the radio program and if you could take obama or any one of the five, before kasich and cruz dropped out, i put up the result, 70/30 with more than 2500 votes cast said i'd take obama before any of the others, r or d. do you see obama's numbers continue to rise the further the come pain goes on yeah, but people are not going to have obama to vote for. it's going to be clinton. clinton is going to have to run
3:15 pm
to the wing to try to win a general election. it's going to be a disaster. i was thinking about it as she starts to bring up fewer people as the potential for vp or surrogates do, what about a trump/condi rice combo? >> assuming she'd be willing. part of the issue is, you think she would. >> absolutely. >> the question is who wants to do? we know a lot of people that don't want to do it. if you have national aspirations and want to get with donald trump and that's the legacy. >> she wants to the nfl commissioner. >> my dear friend, that was a good job. you did as good spin as you could. let's face it. it's a tough sell. it's a tough sell. on behalf of myself and party, i feel badly for you. >> you take perez and try to sell why free trade deals are working for american unions, you've got a tough job.
3:16 pm
>> e.d. hillary clinton, bob beckel, i'm glad we solved that. thank you both for being here. to you at home keep the tweets coming. how did trump's taco bowl tweet fly with hispanics. i am going ask the former mexican president. >> taco bowl, are we good now. >> my compliments to the drug-dealing rapists who made the taco bowl. >> excuse me. excuse me. >> i see why he likes them. it's like him, it's a slump inside of an orange shell. i get it. some cash back cards are, shall we say, unnecessarily complex. limiting where you can earn bonus cash back... then those places change every few months... please. it's time you got the quicksilver card from capital one. quicksilver earns you unlimited 1.5% cash back on every purchase, everywhere.

3:22 pm
>> yeah, get the money ready because you're going to pay for the wall. >> mr. president, sounds like money aside, you're going to pay. you don't think that it serves a purpose. >> yeah, that is no case. but let me tell you something here, michael. let me show you this, this is a donald trump tie. maybe it's not close enough but but it's donald trump trademark tie. and then you see here that it's made in china. so what is the integrity of this man? what is the consistency of his positions when he is importing a pair of goods, ties, shirts and to benefit his trump business and, of course, canceling u.s. jobs by importing ties from china? he's not committing with his promise to u.s. workers that he will defend jobs. this is the worst thing that you

so looks like we still maybe headed for a contested convention this summer, only on the democratic side of the aisle not republican. bernie sanders refuses to get out of the race despite the delegate advantage crucial to her of getting the magic number of 2383 among super delegates. sanders argues that the super delegates should be able to vote for him. >> our goal is two-fold. number one, to minute majority of pledged delegates, and, number two, it is to make sure that in those states where we have won landslide victories, 65, 75% of the votes, that the superdelegates in those states listen to their constituents and vote the way their constituents voted. >> joining me now is two super delegates in the states that sanders won and supporting hillary clinton.
3:34 pm
congresswoman debbie dingell represents the 12th district of michigan. congresswoman, doesn't he make a point if you voted for bernie sanders shouldn't the super delegates from that state be on board with him, not her? >> i have a great deal of respect for bernie sanders and i'm fighting very hard to make sure his delegate are protected when we go to state central and the convention. i think that he should go o all of the way to the convention because he's brought a lot of people to the party. as a super delegate, i'm supposed to vote -- by the way bernie never asked me to consider supporting him. i've had good discussions. people don't like being taken for granted. i've known hillary clinton for 35 years, i know who she is, the personal side of her and i know what she's going to fight for. those super delegates were created for their input into who the two candidates are. it becomes a personal vote on that. the rules don't say super

delegates vote the way their state does. >> i know but super delegates were created to pick a winner. we know that this came post 72 when mcgovern got blown out. and if you look at the national surveys, and i can put one up now, they show bernie sanders running stronger against donald trump than hillary clinton. look at advantage that he has. it's a 16-point advantage over trump as compared to hers which is 13. isn't that an argument to be made and that's a likely winner in a general? >> okay, you're talking to a woman who thinks all of these polls are nothing. remember the polls in michigan that said hillary clinton was going to win by 20-some points and i said, before that election happened that that wasn't going to be the case. i'm also one that thinks that donald trump could win. and i think that when we get into this very real president el election, i think it's going to be very competitive, i do believe that hillary will be the stronger candidate. you're correct that's why super delegates were chosen.
3:36 pm
but ooh i have a great deal of respect for bernie sanders, and i want to make that clear, too. >> respond if you will to the criticism that you have heard and that the very nature of the delegates is undemocratic. >> well, i would not respond or deny it. i don't like the system as it is. i think that it should be dramatically reformed. i think there's a difference. i think that congresswoman d dingell and others like her should be automatic on pledged delegates to the convention. but i'm a member of the national democratic committee and in minnesota we elect those, i was leaked at a convention four years ago by state delegates. i don't think that someone like me should be an automatic unpledged, that's what gives the party so many super delegates because look, in the end, what the super delegates do is bless the wisdom and the will of voters.
3:37 pm
super delegates and i have said that i will never vote to overturn the will of delegates and right now hillary clinton is leading by 3 million votes and has a substantial lead in pledge delegates, much larger than barack obama of had. >> yeah, but she did not win your state. i do respect the fact that you say that i'm a super delegate and i don't like this process. let me show for everybody at home the impact of the super delegates of the nomination. this is significant and where are we now 2218 for her and 1444 for him. go to the next slide. which shows, without super delegates, it's really a 300-delegate difference. this is determining the outcome of this thing. go ahead. i'm sorry. >> not at all. no, not at all. it's not determining at all the outcome. 300 pledge delegate is a larger lead than obama ever had in pledged delegates over hillary

clinton in 2008. and in the end -- >> but wait a minute, but wait. it would be a much different picture if, as i'm questioning the super delegates from the states that bernie won, like congresswoman dingell instead were for him, not her? >> but actually i think that you're pointing to the problem here. i don't think that the media should be including the super delegates in looking at the count because, in fact, when just looking at pledge delegates and certainly the popular vote, secretary clinton is far way ahead. so the only role that super delegates will play at the convention is to bless the will and convention of the voters that put her there. so the super delegates will not be determinative in the race nor should they be. >> you make it sound they're obligated to go along with the give of the electorate but that's not why they were created. i will give you the final point on this. >> we need to change these rules. i tried to schang change the

day, third parties take from both sides. like i say the majority of the americans consider themselves independent. where is that representation? at the end of the day if i'm not in the polls, i'm certainly not going to be able to be in the presidential debate. it's a real chicken and egg thing. i have to get in the polls. >> look, if you're at 11%, you have to get to 15, that's the threshold. i'd love to see a third voice on the stage to make the left and right defend against the middle. thanks for being here, and i appreciate your time. >> yeah, thank you. the key again is being in the polls. being in the polls. right now i will be at 20% if i people just google gary johnson. thank you. >> mitt romney met privately with bill kristol to discuss a third party bid for president.

is it too late for any other candidate to get on the ballot in all 50 states. businessman peter ackerman knows the answer, passionate about giving americans more choice. he spent the last decade bankrolling and for more opportunities for independent presidential candidates, including access to debates that governor johnson just discussed. peter ackerman joins me now. peter, your passion to give americans more choice. is it too late to mound a third party candidacy in the third party election? >> if that candidate is going to run in all 50 states, it's too really too late. >> why? >> when you go out two months the ballot access deadline is completed for almost 40%, 50% of the country. the deadlines make it impractical. i imagine there are other considerations like money, whether you get on the debate stage? >> all of those considerations are very important.
3:49 pm
if you're not democrat or republican, you can only raise money in $2,700 increments. now that really means about $100 a person. the cost of getting on the ballot with everything associated with buying the significant drive professionals and the legal requirements is close to 8 million to 10 million. that means that you would have to visit with 80,000 people to have any chance of this happening. that's why no one in history who cannot self-fund the campaign has ever gotten on a ballot as individual candidate for president in all 50 states. >> what if there was a michael bloomberg who has the checkbook and can write it? can that person mount a third party candidacy? >> i believe that he's done in texas. there's no way he can get on the ballot in texas. he would have to start right now and he would probably lose most of june and half of july.
3:50 pm
so it's really running -- the clock is really running. >> peter ackerman, thank you. >> thank you. >> so it sounds like it is too late. that's what i'm taking away from him, except for gary johnson, who will be on that ballot if he gets the libertarian nod. still to come, your best and worst tweets. let's see what's coming so far. smerconish, you can't call your show independent politics. you are purely establishment. hey, marys room, you're only saying that because i'm in a three-piece suit.
