6:00 pm
good evening. donald trump making headlines for things he said, for positions he held, for people he
6:01 pm
offended, people he belittled. in other words, welcome to monday. all of the above stands out from most mondays. this is the first one he is the republican nominee. donald trump as we know is not most candidates. his general election pivot includes concerning financial experts, annoying tax cutting conservatives and talking about crooked hillary. we begin with jeff zeleny. >> reporter: hillary clinton isn't taking the bait. >> she's married to a man the worst abuser in the history of politics. she's married to a man who hurt many women, and hillary, if you look and study, hillary hurt
6:02 pm
many women. and hillary, if you look and study, hillary hurt many women, women that he abused. >> reporter: today in virginia, clinton says she isn't responding to that. >> i am answering on what i think voters care about. >> you're responding with substance. >> i am running my campaign, i am not running against him. he is doing a fine job of doing that himself. i am running my campaign. what i want to do as president, what i stand for, what i always stood for. >> reporter: her battle with trump hardening in the fight for women voters. >> there's still a challenge with equal pay for women which is real, not made up. >> reporter: trump defending his comments on cnn's "new day" saying clinton played the woman card first. >> she's playing the woman's card to the hilt. >> reporter: women, always a pivotal vote, even more so this year. she leads trump 61-35 nationally among women. according to the latest cnn orc poll. clinton is taking her message to small groups of voters. like this gathering today at a cafe in virginia. >> i am accused of playing the gender card and all of that, and
6:03 pm
the fact is that it is a real problem. >> reporter: she won the virginia primary two months ago. >> hello, virginia. >> reporter: but she's back with the general election in mind. >> it is clear that there are so many challenges facing young families today that we have got to come to grips with. >> reporter: the path to the white house goes through suburbs like here in loudoun county. president obama carried it by 8% in 2008, three points four years later. in the 2014 mid term elections, a republican barbara comstock won the congressional district by 17 points. now she's torn saying i can't support hillary clinton and i won't be, but donald trump needs to earn the votes of me and many others. these swing voters here will be key to the fall election. clinton is still trying to build excitement around her history making candidacy to be the first woman president, particularly wooing women, an effort mocked
6:04 pm
by "saturday night live." >> president barbie, the first barbie commander in chief. >> oh, neat. >> don't you want to play with her? >> jeff zeleny joins us. what is the campaign saying about why hillary clinton isn't responding directly to trump's allegations? >> reporter: quite simply, the campaign believes voters don't want to hear about it any more, that women voters didn't like it then, wouldn't like it now. they want to hear what she would do for them. we saw her talking child care, health care, education, other things. trying to take the high road for now. they believe it will work in the long term. they believe they have a significant advantage among women voters and others. but there's that open question there, that donald trump is a unique candidate here. all of his attacks worked well
6:05 pm
in the primary, would they work now. for now, the clinton campaign believes, and secretary clinton believes, said i am not responding. doesn't want to be drawn into this. will bill clinton respond. he is out there campaigning all of the time. he is known to go off message. i will be watching that in coming days. >> at some point they'll be on stage debating each other. we will see how that goes. donald trump says he doesn't have a problem with women voters. does he? >> he does at the moment. has a huge structural problem. if he doesn't improve it, can't win the white house in november. this is among women. asked voters in a national poll, registered voters, women, 61 to 35%. 26 points. it is impossible, near impossible. i don't know how you get elected if this is the gender gap election day. president obama won in electoral
6:06 pm
college landslide over mitt romney. you look at the number, donald trump needs to be in this territory or better than mitt romney. can't be 26 points down with women and have a chance to win the general election. can he get there, he has six months. as he tries to get there, this is a problem. horse race numbers can't be changed. it is hard to change this when you have this number, 34%. women registered voters, only 34% view him favorably. 64% unfavorable. he has a convention and six months to change it. can it be done? of course. is he starting in a huge ditch, he is. >> donald trump essentially says there's a lot of time. hillary clinton has high unfavorables, it is much ado about nothing. >> trump says i won the republican primary convincingly. this is no big deal. that's a valid point. but i want to make this point. republican primaries and demographics of primaries are
6:07 pm
different than general election. republican primaries tend to be majority men. women are a smaller slice of the electorate. these are states trump won and states trump says are in play in the general election. nevada, virginia, michigan, florida, new york, pennsylvania. only in florida in the exit polls were women majority of voters in primaries, in nevada's caucus. 48% of women, 47%, over 50 in florida. in the general election, we know from history it will be significantly different. take a look. 53% of voters in 2012 in nevada on election day were women. 51% in michigan. 55% in florida. 55% in new york. look at the difference between the republican primary and general election in new york, same in pennsylvania. anderson, in november donald trump will be competing in an electorate that nationally will be majority women. in key battleground states are majority women. 55, 55, 53, by a significant margin. you can't win the presidency with 26.gender gap which is what
6:08 pm
he has. he has six months, there's no doubt at the moment he has a problem. >> john, make it back to the panel table. we begin discussion in the last hour, got heated. joining us this hour, ana navarro, matt lewis and other panelists. mary katherine, let's start with you. this feels like just the beginning of this kind of discussion. we'll be hearing more about it. does it help donald trump? >> it is just the beginning of the general election. i think what's important, we saw him flip numbers in a serious way during the gop primary, things people thought was unfavorable. >> he couldn't get above 35%. >> had a ceiling. cathedral ceiling. >> and they kept raising that. >> what's interesting, the distinction john makes between primary and general, donald trump speaks about the general as if it will be the same as the primary, it is not the same
6:09 pm
electorate, doesn't respond to the same things. he changed rules but i don't think he can make them the same thing. >> hillary clinton, the attack on her as enabler, do you think it plays well with republicans and independents? >> plays amazingly well with republicans. we have seen republican candidate after republican candidate bend over backwards. i'm a good guy, not a racist. they play the woman card. mitt romney was destroyed. he is the most decent guy, destroyed by the woman thing. republicans are like finally somebody going on the offensive and take the battle to hillary. there's something else here. part of it is psychological warfare, it is not the issue, it is what he did to ted cruz. he brings up the rafael cruz involved in assassination of jfk. crazy issue, doesn't get any voters, but got him off message. and with hillary, see if she
6:10 pm
slips up. >> it sets a marker where it might go, a warning i guess trump used effectively when she brought up the notion of trump as sexist, he countered with his enabler. i think in trump's estimation stopped the clinton push on that. >> first, let me say i don't think it plays well with all republican women. doesn't play well with this republican woman. i have a real issue with donald trump going there. we need to have this be issue oriented at some point in the campaign, needs to be debate about the issues. i have an issue i have to tell you with a guy like donald trump, is he the best messenger on a message like infidelity? i don't think so. let's remember he had the enabler and the philanderer at his wedding and maxed out in campaign donations to the enabler and gave her foundation thousands of dollars. the entire attack is crazy from
6:11 pm
every angle, from the woman angle, political angle. >> also about controlling the news cycle. we are talking about it now. >> he is doing what he has done. >> can trump make the argument when back in 2008, we played that video, he said there was much ado about nothing. >> already has, right? this is all everybody is talking about. and matt is absolutely correct. this unifies the party. this is not the best strategy. >> it does not unify the number. >> look at the polling numbers. ana, you're wrong. >> that's because we are not unified. if you think the party is unified -- >> there's a difference between unifying and unification. >> i think that the vast majority of republicans will enjoy going on the offense. if hillary slips up, by the way, she's hypocritical on this, this shows her hypocrisy.
6:12 pm
you talked about it last segment, about the fact she was essentially trying to discredit women. that's a vital issue. that's legitimate. >> i want paul -- >> that argument is not up to donald trump. >> i want paul and others to respond. we have to take a quick break. we will have more on the discussion. be right back. allergies with nasal congestion? find fast relief behind the counter with claritin-d. 6:16 pm
trump thinks he will be better for women by a big factor than hillary clinton. that's a quote. some of his tactics are up for debate and whose votes he wins them with are up for debate. back with the panel. paul, i want you to respond to what was said. there are younger women that were not of voting age in the '90s, not aware of the history here. this might be new stuff. >> it is, but it is literally prehistoric. one of the laws of politics is election is about the future, not the past. elections are about your life, not mine. this attack violates both rules. barry said this will unify republicans. that may be, but that explains it is a tactic. he invited the clintons to his wedding, praised clinton after the affair became known, attacked impeachment.
6:17 pm
trying to put one over, it will work on some people, they tend to be republican voters anyway. his deficit with women, married women went to mitt romney by seven points. now going for hillary by 12. trump has to makeup 19 points just to lose. unmarried women went for president obama by 36 points, going for hillary by 52. he can't win unless he gets better with women. i don't think this will make him better with women, it will make him worse. >> to paul's point, if donald trump believes it so vehemently, why back in 2008 did he say basically the opposite and invite them to his wedding. >> a lot of things changed since then, one being linda trip came out and said i was down the who will from hillary clinton in the west wing, i heard her come up with lies to demonize the women. i think it will be effective with women, not only allegations with respect to clinton's

6:19 pm
>> angela, do you believe this is something that's going to go as she says? >> no, i don't. i belie i believe -- i am flabbergasted about allegations. >> she's right about the audio, it was broken more than a year ago from the clinton library, dug up by a reporter there. there's actual evidence of her speaking about it. >> the breadth and depth of what's been said is not. what i am saying to you is i think we still need to be careful with our words. i think we can still run great election coverage, have a great debate on real, tangible issues. unfortunately for trump supporters, it is hard. you don't know where he stands day to day. >> but is it a dupe for new generation women that weren't paying attention or alive then or voting age, how do you think it plays? >> i don't think it plays well. again, goes to the fact whether

you have been cheated on or know someone cheated on, it is always wrong to blame someone who was a party of that and didn't participate in it. i think there are women everywhere that can appreciate that. maybe they have parents divorced because a father cheated or mother cheated. it is ridiculous. >> did donald trump have affairs? i am not up on his history. did your candidate have affairs? >> i don't know personally if he did or didn't. >> what's been reported? >> we do know that people he has been married three times, people love to bring it up over and over and over again, but i know that he has never demonized sexual assault victims. >> he did on a military base i brought up earlier. >> you brought up a tweet and took it out of context. he was saying when you bring men and women together, there are sexual assaults, and it is unfortunate and shouldn't happen. >> is donald trump the right person to bring up, is he the right person to bring these up. if it was such a big deal, why was it not a big deal in 2008?
6:21 pm
>> i think he is the right person to bring it up. if we really want the right person to bring it up, juanita broaddrick should be on the network, paula jones should be on. bring on the victims. if you don't want to hear it from donald trump, bring on the victims, let them have their day in court here and now and address these issues. >> let me tell you, much like the bill clinton case, the donald trump philandering, infidelity was also played out on national media. we all read about the fight between marla maples and ivana trump. i don't care about that. i want to know what they do for me today and tomorrow to make our lives better. you know, frankly it is disingenuous to be on national tv and say you don't know what his marital history was. everybody knows. it is all over the press.
6:22 pm
>> you don't care about affairs, do you care about actions of hillary clinton with respect to victims? not about bill's actions, take bill out of this, do you care about her actions with respect to the victims. do you care or not care. >> let me tell you what i care about. i care about national security and education and the economy. i care about jobs. if anybody is going to make charges against hillary clinton, it should be the women who had to deal with it. >> they have, and they have. >> it shouldn't be a man who we all know, including you, did cheat on his wife. >> they have made those accusations, they can't get national attention, can't get on television networks. they made accusations to places like the daily mail, the only people that would listen to them. i am surprised you don't care about these women. it is a huge issue. >> i didn't say i don't care about the women. i said i don't care about allegations that were litigated 20 years ago when it comes to trump and bill clinton, particularly since bill clinton is not on the ballot. judge hillary clinton by her

actions. not his misdeeds. >> what we are saying is that hillary said some nasty things about some of the women. >> such as? >> the looney toons remark. >> do you think it is fair game to criticize her being unhappy her husband had an affair in a private phone call? >> she didn't say anything about her husband in that conversation. >> yes, she did. didn't make the story. >> this all started because hillary clinton back in december attacked donald trump for being a mi song nis. donald trump said you want to play that game, we are going to push back. >> said he wanted to punish women. >> i will tell you which i find interesting, donald trump is showing us he is gender blind when it comes to attacking and counter attacking. >> what melania trump said

herself. >> you could argue is a positive attribute. >> let's recognize that a lot of male candidates tip toe around stuff regarding women, how do we prepare to debate or run against a woman. donald trump is laying it out there. >> if john mccain or mitt romney were running against her, they would be wringing their hands. >> can she continue to respond to it in the same way? >>att points out, trump raised this for months. he is 52 points behind with unmarried women. 12 points behind with married women. it is not working. that's why hillary knows if she makes the election about their lives, not hers, they'll both be better off. the truth is mr. trump is wealthy, has a terrific family. the thing you did with the family, best thing you did in the campaign. hillary is healthy and wealthy with family. both the families will be fine. the question is will your family

as we have been reporting, a crucial moment for the republican party with a critical meeting days away. thursday morning, donald trump meets with gop leaders in washington, including paul ryan, highest ranking republican withholding support for the presumptive nominee. saying he is not ready yet. he is not alone. tonight the gop is divided from grass roots to its leaders. here is dana bash. >> reporter: as the grand old party churns in turmoil, donald trump is reminding republican nay sayers of this reality. gop voters chose him for a reason. >> i have people they're representing, they're unbelievable people, they're loyal, they're smart, they're sharp, they're tired of being abused. >> reporter: and some establishment republicans are getting on board. in iowa, longest serving governor in history. >> he will be the nominee of our
6:31 pm
party, i am a team player, i'm going to support him. >> reporter: even house speaker paul ryan that detonated a political bomb withholding support for trump now looks like he is trying to pull things off ahead of a critical meeting with trump later this week. he told a paper back home the man deserves a ton of credit for an amazing achievement. at the same time, we want to make sure we don't pretend we are unified and go into the fall at half strength. after trump suggested he may ask ryan to step aside as chair of the republican convention, ryan said he would be happy to oblige. today on cnn's new day, trump also seemed to try to lay ground work for a successful meeting with ryan. >> he was supportive, nice. i thought everything was fine. then i got blindsided. so we'll see. >> reporter: other high profile republicans however are digging into the gop divide. trump supporter sarah palin told cnn she will even work to defeat ryan in his republican primary.
6:32 pm
>> paul ryan, their problem is they have become so disconnected from the people whom they are elected to represent. >> reporter: palin's running mate john mccain says he won't go to the republican convention, told manu raju he is with trump, facing tough senate re-election bid in arizona and has been careful not to anger republican voters there. >> you have to listen to people that have chosen the nominee of our republican party. i think it would be foolish to ignore them. >> reporter: that puts mccain at rare odds with his long time political and policy soul mate, lindsey graham. >> are you the one out of step here with your party? >> could be. i would have supported all 16, except for the donald. the republican party has been conned and this guy is not a reliable conservative republican. >> dana, what more do we know about the meeting thursday between senate gop leaders and trump? >> reporter: that's a new one.
6:33 pm
the republicans in the senate, the leadership starting with the top guy, the majority leader, mitch mcconnell, they're going to have a meeting with donald trump. me understanding is that aside from the obvious, trying to figure out how they can bridge this big gap within the party is that they need to figure out who he is because donald trump isn't a washington player, he is not somebody who is very well known to them. most top leaders in washington know him mostly from television. first and foremost, they want to get to know him, see what he is like behind the scenes. whereas in the past, however many nominees, it hasn't been that hard. they've known them. the other interesting development, anderson, tonight is deirdre walsh on capitol hill confirmed a "the washington post" report that the trump campaign through armstrong

williams is reaching out to paul ryan to try to get ben carson, trump emissary to meet with ryan before the trump meeting. this is the kind of thing that happens at the state department before you have a meeting before a meeting so the meeting goes well. the fact that it is happening within the republican party among the house speaker and nominee is i think a bit telling. >> yeah. back with the panel. joining us, david walker, head of u.s. government accountability office. david, how do you see this playing out. this week and beyond? >> it is a mess now. i hope that the general election campaign will be about the future in policy rather than about the past and personalities. it is clearly going to be very different. i think ultimately speaker ryan and donald trump will reconcile. >> you think sooner rather than later? i think they'll reconcile. the speaker has a role to oversee the convention and has

obligation to support the republican nominee. it is the republican voters that decide who the nominee is. quite frankly, i think the quote, unquote establishment hasn't come to realize that many voters view them as part of the problem. >> paul ryan also has a responsibility as the inheriter of the conservative movement. that wing is living in exile. maybe temporarily. if paul ryan allows his brand of conservatism to be tarnished by donald trump, that will be a bad thing. maybe he can find a way to work with donald trump. he has to keep in mind how do we keep the reagan kemp model from being coopted. >> do you think some of his comments about the economy, printing more money out, are reckless? >> i think he hasn't thought through all of the issues yet frankly. i imagine he'll be doing more homework on this. for example, his comment about national debt. there's only two things in the

u.s. constitution that are guaranteed. number one is debt of the united states and the second is union civil war pensions. i think we paid those. my family was from alabama. we weren't covered for some reason. but you don't have to worry about that. frankly our interest rates are so low, if rates go up, don't want to buy back what we have. we have to restructure. we are on an unsustainable path. we need somebody willing to take that on and need to cut a deal. >> from an economic standpoint, some folks watch this, say what does this matter. donald trump has ideas, maybe he is unconventional. but he won. >> yes, he won. that's something that everybody accepts. what they don't know, what does the future hold for the policies. paul ryan has seven taskforces in the house, there to put out a house platform for how the united states should be run. they want to know if donald

trump will oppose it. that's paul ryan's vision for america. where does that fit in the republican party now as led by donald trump. that's the issue that has to be resolved. >> william bennett, long time friend of ryan, says he thinks the meeting is less about specific policy and more broader issues about conservative principles, limited government. do you think that's true? >> it is a get to know each other on a personal basis, they don't know each other very well. i think this meeting will go well thursday. >> did it surprise you to have paul ryan come out so publicly on jake tapper's show last week? >> well, he is probably reconsidering that now. fact of the matter is they need to focus on policies, priorities, principles at this point. principles and priorities. and the fact is yes, they need to work together, but ultimately the chief executive of the united states, the president of the united states has to lead. and they have to work together to get things done. frankly it has been awhile since

we had that. >> doug? >> i wasn't surprised. he has a personal commitment to jack kemp vision for america and policies he is developing, and he has an obligation as the leader of republicans in the house to make sure they retain that house majority. he is not ready to check that box, he is not sure he can meet both those commitments. >> and also concerned about other congressional and senate races. >> yes. there's open discussion whether the house is the fire line. if the senate and white house goes, will the house be able to stand. republicans maintain control. paul ryan will investigate carefully before he says yes to anything. >> we have to take a quick break. how evangelicals feel about donald trump has a complicated answer. details ahead.

donald trump has the support of a number of evangelical leaders, and not all christians are on board now that trump is the presumptive nominee, many fear they don't have a force in the race. russell moore has been a vocal critic and was in an op-ed column in "the new york times" friday.
6:43 pm
he hit back on twitter writing russell moore is truly a terrible representative of evangelicals and all of the good they stand for, a nasty guy with no heart. polls show he has support with more evangelicals that don't go to church regularly than those that do. how it will play out for november. chief broadcaster from christian broadcast network and president of southern baptist convention ethics commission. dr. moore, welcome. want to give awe chance to respond to the tweet about you. >> i thought it was great. one of the few things i agree with donald trump on. i am a nasty guy with no heart. we sing worse things on hymns, a wrech in need of god's grace. i agree with that. but i think that's the reason i need forgiveness from god through jesus christ. beyond that, we have real issues with evangelical christians, with both parties right now, and the direction both parties are going. >> so the position, dr. moore,

that evangelicals find themselves in, and again, it is si silly to use that paint white gold a broad brush, how do you choose between donald trump and hillary clinton, you say many of them are horrified in your words. >> yes, horrified. and many of them are thinking through i hear all day long every day from evangelicals who are thinking through whether they're going to write in a candidate, whether they're going to vote for a third party, whether they're not going to vote in that election, whether they're going to try to come up with some lesser of two evils calculation in their voting. it is a real crisis for many evangelicals. frankly, what i hear most of all from evangelicals is does this mean that america is under the judgment of god? there are many christians that are wondering what does this mean for our country when we have a situation in which neither major party nominee for president of the united states is someone that they can

respect, they can point their children to. i am the father of five sons. when i look at this presidential candidate the way he talks about women, and the way he treats sexuality and talks about basic moral principles, i don't want my children to watch this. i think that's the burden that is weighing on people of faith now. >> david, cnn has had exit or entrance polls measuring preference of white evangelical voters, 26 states so far. trump won in 17 of those states, 40% support in all 26 states with evangelical voters. cruz 31%. so he is winning voters as he is willing to point out. >> he is winning voters and anderson, if you look closer at cnn numbers as well. look at weekly church goers. donald trump is pulling in 40%. 40% of weekly church goers. you know the narrative in mainstream media is that donald trump does well with cultural

christians, ones that show up easter and christmas. there's more to it. it is a big part of his evangelical attraction. >> in your op-ed that i read friday, you take a look at the history of the church through the '50s and '60s, response to civil rights movement. why is that important to look at given context of what's going on today in this race? >> well, it is important because a lot of people when they think evangelical think old, angry white people when in fact evangelicalism is far broader than that. we are a multi generational, multi ethnic movement of people that believe in the gospel of jesus christ. if you look at what happened in the 1960s, i talked about it in the op-ed, a church i knew of that said nothing during the civil rights movement, when you

had literally down the road from the church little girls being blown apart by terrorists in this country, and the church had nothing to say about issues of racial justice, and then later when the church tried to reach african-american people in that community, they found that the community didn't want to hear from them, and rightly so because they said when you had the opportunity to speak up, you said nothing. i think we are in a similar moment now when you see the race baiting and misoginy. if you have people not willing to say things about decency, justice, morality, that applies to everyone. not just political opponents. we don't have any credibility left for the future. >> david, did you hear that debate? >> i hear some of that for sure. i think that the bottom line is donald trump has some work to do as relates to mobilizing the grass roots evangelical voters who are the ones on the ground doing the dirty work.
6:48 pm
i don't think there's any question. it is interesting. everybody talks about candidates have to move to the center. i think donald trump needs to move more to the right. he is pretty much in the center of things, if you will. if he moves to the right and can start to mobilize the evangelicals, he will need grass roots around the country and my reporting soon will indicate that will be exactly what is going to be happening. let me just say one thing quickly, anderson. it is interesting. mitt romney was not the social conservative candidate for evangelicals necessarily, and same thing with john mccain. folks talk about donald trump. evangelicals have been burned before. they're ready for something different. >> we have to leave it there. david brody, dr. moore, good to have you on. thank you very much. up next, breaking news, deadly tornadoes in oklahoma. and a fire destroyed nearly 400
