most sacred places, arlington national cemetery, and remember those for whom memorial day is dedicated. an amazing place. america will have a new commander in chief next memorial day. now that it's official, donald trump has enough delegates to clinch of gop nomination. can the candidate who lives by slash and burn calm republican jitters with a more consistent campaign message? >> if you keep supporting those who let you down, you will keep being let down the rest of your lives. i'm prepared to kick the special interests out of washington, d.c. [ cheers and applause ] and to hand the seat of power over to you. >> what impact will a calculating new report on hillary clinton's e-mail server have on a candidate who already has glaring weaknesses when it

trump will lead the gop ticket this fall. he tried to frame how he sees the now 163 days to november. >> the choice in november is a choice between the clinton agenda that puts donors first or an agenda that puts america first, my agenda, america first always. >> you might notice he sounds a little different because that line was from a written speech, a lengthy, detail speech read on a teleprompter, in contrast with hillary clinton. >> we're going to save the coal industry. we're going to save that coal industry, believe me, we're going to save it. i love those people. >> that speech was actually just what the republican establishment and its political pros have been looking for. less insult, less bluster, fewer clinton conspiracy theories, and an overarching outsider theme of changing a broken washington. is trump finally ready to take

cues from the pros, including new campaign chief guru and newly hired pollster? well, not so fast. he wandered off-speech repeatedly. in montana, the trademark trump was back. >> i don't know if you've heard, but i have one of the highest poll numbers recorded with men. i would swap it for the women right now, okay? i want the women. the hell with the men. right, men? >> welcome to the trump paradox. he's at this moment, and we give him his due, he beat a field of candidates with nearly 200 years of experience in elective office. the question is, what now? so he has a prepared text in the bismarck event, a long, detailed policy contrast with hillary clinton. you can disagree it if you're a democrat, even some republicans don't like it, but you say, okay, this is a campaign theme, you can see on his face he doesn't like the teleprompter.

then we get the old trump back. >> because trump looks at his campaign and looks at these raggllies and these crowds that are so enthusiastic and says, that's what this is about. okay, i'll do the policies, i'll read off this speech fuif you think it's best, but i know what's best, i'm donald trump. you can see it on these face and you can see it on his aides' faces when he goes offscript. >> he believes he's gone so far because he's shown an authentic side of himself. even if he says things that are offputting and controversial. he says what he feels in his gut. operative types know in a general election that may not work. that why you're seeing this contrast between reading out a speech and reading policies

given to him by folks in the establishment, and then going back to the old trump. >> it does look like they'll have to learn to live with this dr. jekyll and mr. hyde thing going on with donald trump. paul manafort wants him to tone it back and moderate things like his muslim ban. i'll believe it when i see it. these things keep being said and then he keeps going to the crowds, to your point. >> he knows what fires up the cloud. >> donald trump's been winning the battle and hillary clinton is about winning the war. it's taken her longer to win the primary battle. when everything is chopped up in little bits, 140 characters and so on, it's worked for him so far. >> there's at least two donald trumps. for those who think donald trump can't win the election, they say, look at his problems with

latinos, with women, with african-americans, i want to show you something. this is a bar graph. look at the top number there. changing business as usual. he has a 33-point advantage over hillary clinton. if voters decide come november this election is about changing a broken washington, donald trump will win the election. he scores ahead of her on trade deals, sanders voters might be available to him. on changing wall street, sanders voters might be available to him. if you think donald trump can't win, you are wrong. the same poll, we said, think about a donald trump presidency. what words come to mind? look at those, terrified, racist, bigot, wild card, unreasonable, moving to canada. so we have this divided electorate. we'll get to views of hillary clinton later, they're not so great either. he has a chance. but some people say he has no time to spare so he have those moments. >> but he can't help himself. we've seen that.

every time they say he'll be disciplined and they put him on a teleprompter, the next day he's back to what he's seen. to be fair, he hasn't seen any polls to show this is hurting him yet. once he starts seeing evidence that this isn't playing well and isn't building him up, maybe then we'll see a change. it remains to be seen. >> there's a parallel structure. there's a close race in the polls, but then a deeper dive into character and personalities, she's ahead of him most of the time especially with women, on issues like trust. if you look at those, you think she's got a much better chance. >> it's who do you dislike less, not necessarily who you like more. if you look at donald trump in a vacuum, sure, he can't win. but if you look at him compared to hillary clinton, that changes. >> the general electorate is

very different from the primary electorate. he was asked a question by "the washington post," he got into all the stories from the '90s, the suicide of vince foster. donald trump raised a question, maybe this is a murder. vince foster's sister wrote an op ed for "the washington post" where she says, it is beyond contempt that a politician would use a family tragedy to further his candidacy." pri trump seemed to back down, saying he didn't think it had a place in his campaign, unless there is new information, which is kind of trademark. >> you have to be careful. but i have to be who i am. she's proven to be tough. she certainly is resilient over the years, been doing this a long time. and they're very nasty. the clintons have hurt a lot of

people. and this is then friday on the campaign trail he says hillary clinton shouts when she gives speeches, donald trump making it clear he doesn't like it. >> do you think hillary looks presidential? i don't think so. and i'm not going to say it, because i'm not allowed to say it, because i want to be politically correct. so i refuse to say that i cannot stand her screaming into the microphone all the time. >> he thinks it works. >> i was in pennsylvania last week, and i will admit, i went boo pennsylvania thinking this is a state that republicans always think they can win, hasn't worked in the last several elections. i came out of pennsylvania thinking not only can he win that state and this election, but that his attempts to recreate the clinton baggage of the 1990s are working. voter after voter, even those inclined to vote democratic,

this is seeping in. and donald trump is a master of finding someone's weakness and capitalizing on it. >> and it makes her an old school politician. it's not so much about the details. it makes her the past. >> it's what it represents. >> i think that poll you showed earlier from "the new york times" was so significant, and it gets to your point. voters obviously just detest washington. so if he does things as far as a typical politician, someone who says -- he says things that a normal politician won't say, people seem to like that. even if we think this is going to hurt him in a general election, there are folks that are laughing, thinking it's great that he's attacking her. >> people in america process things differently than we do here, that much we know. coming up, new details from a state department report about

donald trump says it will look very different in november. you heard julie in the last block, he could take pennsylvania from blue to red. he also thinks he can win michigan. his plan starts in the rust belt. trump says i think i'm little mix of ronald reagan and arnold schwarzenegger. he says, i can turn new york. florida, it's my second state. donald trump thinks he can do all that. mark me down as a skeptic. by the way, that would be a blowout. even trump says he's probably stretching it when he says california. but democrats are nervous about trump's ability to turn some other relikably blue states to red, like the rust belt states. that's why hillary clinton is trying to make the case that voting for trump is dangerous. >> you know, based on what we have already heard, donald trump is an unqualified loose cannon who cannot get near the most

powerful job in the world. it is up to us to say no. >> secretary clinton's former boss is trying to help. in japan this past week president obama says the prospect of a touch presidency has key u.s. allies in a tizzy. >> they are not sure how seriously to take some of his pronouncements. but they're rattled by it. and for good reason. a lot of the proposals that he's made display either ignorance of world affairs or a cavalier tudor attitude or more interest in tweets and headlines than what is required to keep

americans safe. >> they understand hillary clinton has high negatives. their strategy is you may not love her but you cannot have him, you can't trust him, he's not up to the job, and they think's dangthink he's dangerou. >> republicans are saying, look, she'll put you in danger too, she had these classified e-mails that were allegedly sent from staffers to her. they use what happened in benghazi. they have a counternarrative. again, it's one of these things where she's less bad, guys, you should not vote for her. >> one thing i think you'll see, bernie sanders is still an open question, but you have secretary clinton, bill clinton is on the campaign trail, president obama has a birther history of donald trump, you hear this week about michelle obama wanting to get on

the campaign trail. and then there's elizabeth warren. >> donald trump was drooling over the idea of a housing meltdown because he could buy up more property on the cheap. what man does that? >> i was being hit by pocahontas. pocahontas. pocahont pocahontas. that's elizabeth warren. i call her goofy. she is -- no, no, goofy. she gets less done than anybody in the united states senate. she's got a big mouth. and that's about it. >> pocahontas, a lot of people would take offense at that. this is his style, trump is being trump, the insults keep coming. you do have this all hands on deck. bernie sanders is an open question. the democrats get this, it's all hands on deck. the republican party, you still

have former rivals saying eh. marco rubio, who called trump a con man, who said he was dangerous, now marco rubio says i'm going to go to the convention and if donald needs me -- >> look, my policy differences with donald trump, i spent 11 months talking about them. i think they're well-understood. that said, i don't want hillary clinton to be president. if there's something i can do to help that from happening and it's helpful to the cause, i'm honored to be considered for that. >> you'll see the rest of that interview coming up on "state of the union" with jake tapper, an exclusive with marco rubio. rubio saying, you have to stand on principle, what are you doing here? the degree that he's doing it tepidly, and the democrats seem to have most of their hands on deck, is that a problem for trump? >> on the rubio front, it's interesting to see the party start to slowly get behind him. there are still a lot of folks who are still not there yet. speaker paul ryan for one.

he's not ready to endorse donald trump, he wants trump to hear about are no of his policy positions. the real challenge for trump, the question is, does it really mattered that folks in the party establishment are not getting behind donald trump when he has legions of supporters back him on the campaign trail? >> he thinks not, it could be put to the test, we'll see. >> i think the calculation on the part of people like rubio and other republicans is the real motivating factor for republican voters is keeping hillary out of the white house. while it may be a convenient position to hang on to right now as they actually try to figure out where they want to be with trump, they do feel like this is helpful, and if they can get republicans on board with that concept, it can be as powerful a message as with democrats. >> during the debate where rubio was asked, he was selling never

trump stuff on his website, yet when he was asked during the debate whether he would vote for donald trump, he left the door open. so he's been setting this up quite a while, leaving the door open. >> donald trump has complete control, if he chose to change his behavior. when you campaign against people by commenting on the size of their hands, when you try to humiliate people, of course they're going to be reluctant, if you support him you might alienating your own future prospects. >> you make a good point, but just friday, again, he's mocking mitt romney, who is still holding out, saying i could never be for trump, could never look my grandkids in the eye, and trump says he's a choking dog. paul manafort sends word to

republicans saying, we get it, this is routine in politics, if you need space, take it. staff says that's okay. the candidate, no way. >> since 2000, the number of people on food stamps in new mexico has tripled. we have to get your governor to get going. she's got to do a better job, okay? your governor has got to do a better job. she's not doing the job. hey, maybe i'll run for governor of new mexico, i'll get this place going. she's not doing the job. we've got to get her moving, come on, let's go, governor. >> again, again, you know, he's ripped up every other rule this year. >> she's latina. she's a woman. and -- >> and she's part of the republican establishment. >> but that aside, he needs hispanic voters to support him. he says hispanics love him, he'll have no problem. he needs women voters to support him in higher numbers than they

do now. he says the women will love him when they start paying attention. >> this really scares downticket republicans. even though paul manafort is saying, if you want to keep your distance, fine, we won't put you in an awkward position, they can't necessarily control what donald trump says. so, you know, paul manafort's word only goes so far. >> what was so fascinating about this moment is you had trump over here talking about martinez, then you had jeb bush, scott walker, all rallying to her defense, which shows even though in this election, donald trump will be the nominee, there is a huge fight within the party about what the republican party will be going forward. they want to be more diverse, they know they need to be more diverse. >> he's broken some rules. we'll see what happens. next, he calls her crooked hillary.
