i would have a bag ready. >> get my son together and be ready to go if we have to. >> if some of those wonderful people had guns strapped right here, right to their waist and goes boom, boom, you know what, that would have been a beautiful, beautiful sight, folks. >> you can tell at that moment, it felt like a war room. >> it went with the beat until you heard too many shots.
3:01 am
it was like bang, bang, bang. >> we started running, and unfortunately, i was shot about three times in my leg. >> this is the central fallujah, it was until yesterday, under the control of isis. so grateful for your company, as always. i'm christi paul. >> i'm victor blackwell. >> tens of thousands of acres are burning in three western states this morning. >> triple digit temperatures and high winds fueling the wildfires. let's go to southern california. entire hillsides consumed. 8,000 acres burned so far. mandatory man tore evacuations and 2,000 firefighters are fighting this
3:02 am
fire. >> do some backfiring, what it does is create ace buffer and then this line will have a black line between this and the mane part of the fire. >> 12,000 acres are also burning in arizona. let's go there. another 50,000 acres in two separate fires burning in new mexico. look at the map here. heat and high winds fueling the fires. allison chinchar is in the w weather room. is there any forecast that brings rain? >> it is going to be a while. we're going to have to wait several days both for the temperatures to finally relief themselves a little bit and to get rain chances in. that's why we have this pink color that you see here on the map. for several states indicating an excessive heat warning. again, we think of these places as being very hot, but this is just incredibly hot for these areas.
3:03 am
recording breaking temperatures, the one in arizona, 40% containment. they wouldn't get increased humidity until tuesday or. new mexico, 9% contained of the 7,000 acres. and then in california, about 7,800 acres burned, 45% containment. you think the temperatures are cooling down overnight, that would be the time you would see relief for the fighters, but it's different. you have this dome of high pressure, it holds all of that heat in, and then at night, particularly in california, you get those winds that are called sundowner winds where they happened from sundown on. unfortunately, that's going make it very difficult for these firefighters to fight these fires, even as the temperatures go down. >> thank you, allison. all right, let's talk
3:04 am
politics. donald trump, renewing his threat to self-fund his own campaign if i thinks the republican is starting to waiver. >> this, coming as the billionaire is fighting back against delegates thinking of ways to block him from being the the presidential nominee in cleveland. following the trump campaign and more on party unity. >> good morning, victor and christi. donald trump's message is clear, but not at any cost. the republican nominee, emphasizing he wants the republican party to unify around him, but if it doesn't, he is willing to go it alone. he insisted earlier on saturday he is willing to self-finance if he needs to in the general election, unclear if he'll be able to do that if he needs to. later on in phoenix, donald trump continued to emphasize the republican party, he has plenty of support, but did acknowledge
3:05 am
some in the party who are not quite ready to unify around him and here is what he had to say about that. >> we have some republicans that aren't there. even some that have endorsed me that just aren't there, and we'll find out what we do about that situation. the republicans should stick together. i don't think it is going to matter that much in terms of whether or not i win, i'll be honest. >> he touted in particular the republican national committee, reince priebus, who said is 100% behind him as some delegates going next month to the convention, and trying to keep him from clinching the nomination. donald trump also had the support here today of arizona jan brewer and hard line anti-illegal immigration, sheriff joe arpaio, who was talking about that discord in the republican party, and he boiled it down to two words. hate and jealousy. >> thank you so much.
3:06 am
let's talk to scottie nell hughes and darren johnson, president obama's 2012 campaign. good to see you. thank you for being here. >> good morning. >> so scottie, we heard donald trump saying the republicans need to stick together, he doesn't think it is going to be -- it is really going matter because he is running as an outsider. the question is can he afford to go this this alone? >> i don't think he is going alone, to be honest with you. shawn spicer came out about the rnc and rules committee, it is actually bogus. it is not true. there is no strategy or leader. reince priebus flew down with mr. trump, saying reports of discord are false. you have the relationship leadership with the party. the only thing missing, the politician. as we found out, the congressman
3:07 am
that supported trump, the congressional -- wait a minute. we're about to finally be held accountable to our voters. which is a novel concept for the republican party as we've given these congressman a blank check to write us into debt. that's you're hearing these guys worry, because they're going to be worried about their votes to their constituents. >> it is such an unconventional season. the democratic party endorsed bernie sanders at its state convention, primarily symbolic, but certainly unprecedented. what is your reaction to it? >> listen, democrats are coming together to prepare for the convention and what i've been hearing state by state there has been a lot of enthusiasm and quite frankly, a lot of passion from both sides. i think while it is unprecedented, it won't be the final result. what you're seeing in other
3:08 am
states like georgia and other states in the northeast is that people are coming together and they're going to union night around hillary clinton. >> but when will bernie sanders endorse her, and why does that matter? does it matter, do you think? >> oh, yeah. when bernie sanders endorses hillary clinton, it is going to matter a lot. but listen, we cannot pressure bernie sanders to do something right now that he is uncomfortable with. what bernie sanders has said is that at the appropriate time he'll do what is right for the party, but more importantly, he'll do everything he can to make sure donald trump does not win in november. >> all right, scottie, donald trump brought up thfaction, unb and vote for whomever. take a listen. >> now you have couple of guys that were badly defeated, and they're trying to organize, maybe like a little bit of a delegate revolt. the republican national
3:09 am
committee put out a statement, you can't do it. it is not legal. you're not allowed. >> okay, so technically, unless i'm incorrect here, technically if the party changes its own rules based on what we've learned, it is not illegal so to speak, but if you're trump, how do you make certain that a revolt does not happen or at least gain some momentum? >> well, there is about 24 of those delegates around the phone call and we're looking as close as they get to 1237, then i'll be concerned. how it works the rule committee meets three days before the rnc begins, it has to pass that committee which the majority will be trump delegates. if it gets past that, they have to win the convention floor of all the delegates. the likelihood of this happening is so small and so minuscule, all these folks are doing, and this is what they've -- we're at the line. you're either for mr. trump or you're helping hillary. at this point, this kind ever
3:10 am
dissension is only helping hillary clinton and these folks need to question their motivation and their intentions, and if they consider themselves going to cleveland and they're only helping the democratic party. >> trump thinks he knows why bernie sanders hasn't dropped out. >> he is waiting for really the fbi to do what everybody thinks they're going to do. i mean, i think that. i think he is sort of saying, look, let's hang in there, because ultimately, it is called the fbi convention. and then we'll be the only people, and we will have done something like trump did. want to be like trump. i want to be like trump. >> so trump, using what bernie sanders said about clinton during the primaries is his own attack lines, i know you're shaking your head and smiling, how damaging is it, though? >> listen, first of all, donald
3:11 am
trump does not know anything about the democratic way, and to suggest that he knows about bernie sanders staying in the race is just laughable. listen, bernie sanders is staying in this race for a couple of reasons. one, the guy has received a tremendous amount of votes all across the country, and quite frankly, he has raised a lot of money. at a time when his supporters are fired up to make sure some of the issues he cared deeply about, college afford ability and raising the minimum wage are important issues that hillary clinton will support. and so listen, what we are doing on democratic side is not entering a level of divisiveness like we see with donald trump. donald trump is having a very, very tough time raising money for his own campaign and more importantly, he has to stop people unendorsing him and try to rally his party. he has no idea what bernie sanders is doing. he has no idea what democrats are feeling. more importantly, i think,
3:12 am
again, democrats will be united and we can't play into this donald trump divisive attack world. that's not something we're going do on our side. >> i wake up, i never know what the news is going to be in this campaign. so glad to have you both along for the ride. it makes it for interesting discussions. scottie nell hughes, tharon johnson, thank you so much. the community preparing for more memorials, just outside the pulse nightclub. polo. >> reporter: hey, victor, the city of orlando, still in mourning, a week after the sound of gunfire echoed through the streets. almost seven days going to the hour, putting up on "new day," how some of those victims are being remembered. well, today is another day of mourning, as the city of orlando remembers the massacre at pulse nightclub. >> they're going to do this together tonight. 20 people expected to gather in a candlelight vigil to remember the 49 people who died in last sunday's terror attack. it starts at 6:00. the vigil is at 7:30 if you're
3:30 am
in that area. it was a week ago today that we were sitting here talking to you about what was unfolding, the carnage inside pulse nightclub. shortly after 2:00 in the morning, 49 people killed and 50 others were injured. >> tomorrow, the senate is set to vote on a bill that would stop people on the terrori list from getting a gun. will it succeed after the murder of 49 people in orlando. well, the odds are against it, and one writer says as long as the nra funnels cash to many in congress, gun control legislation has no chance. katie scarletto writes this. nothing has gotten done. nothing. what does that tell but the nra's goals are. they've spent over $50 million to see that nothing changes, since literally a classroom full of children were murdered. joining us now, writer, kelly
3:31 am
scarletat that. then what is monday about. they force the debate and then the vote. most americans support this legislation. there will be few last minute surprise convert ifs any from one side or the other. what are we watching on monday, then? >> i think we're just watching a show for the sake of the electorate. you know, the filibuster was there, and so the republicans caved, and now they're going to have a vote and say well, you lost the vote. the vote represented what the people want, the american people have been pretty clear about what they want here, but the senate is making it pretty clear they represent the nra, not the people. >> so you write here that, let's put it up on the screen, the real solution lies with us, the same thinking voters, they can buy your congressman, but cannot
3:32 am
buy your vote. but kelly, that would suggest that there are enough single issue voters on gun control alone and gun control would surpass as a priority the economy, terror, jobs, and other issues, while it does not and there are not enough single issue voters, at least that's what the polls show, right? >> yeah. i'm not saying there are. i'm just saying that the only way we're going to actually get something done is if we actually make decisions with our votes, because the nra is going to fund what they're funding. they spent $50 million to try to make sure nothing got done, and nothing got done. so the reason they can do that is because as long as the congress keeps doing what the senate and congress doing what the nra asks them to, they're going to keep not getting anything done. >> the nra says about the terror watch list.
3:33 am
>> the national rifle association has never opposed putting people, the fbi believes are terrorists or could be terrorists on a watch list. all we've said, if you're going to deny their rights, gets a judge to agree with you. this is how justice works in america. >> so what do you this about judicial oversight on people who are added to this list and legislation if it passes at some point would not be allowed to buy guns? >> absolutely. i have no problem with that. the terrorist watch list has 1.35 million people on it. i don't think we have 1.35 million terrorists running around in the country. we need to do some things to reconcile the watch list. >> that makes the argument that those who oppose the legislation use to justify their opposition, that there are 1.5 million name
3:34 am
there is, you're taking rights from americans, guaranteed from the constitution, you admit that some of those people -- >> i never said that. i never said specific legislation should pass. i think what we need to do is we need to do more things. to make sure that terrorists can't buy guns. so my counter to that would be, well, if you really feel this way, that we need to have judicial oversight, propose a different bill. propose a bill that says okay, we agree. we think that terrorists shouldn't have guns, but in doing that, we think there needs to be judicial oversight. we'll make sure terrorists can't have guns. if we have a terrorist watch list, and then say they can't. it ends up being a red herring, because they're not offering an alternative. this is the reason we won't do it, but not offering it as an alternative. it is just blowing smoke. >> kelly, thank you so much for joining us.

an extraordinary moment in u.s./russia relations. a conference call was arranged after an air strike on an american backed syria. a senior defense tells cnn it raises concerns about russia's intentions. in the meantime, vladimir putin told fareed zakaria needs to back out of russian affairs and stop meddling. >> it is probably the only super power, we accept this fact.

4:02 am
quality alerts out for portions of new mexico and also into arizona. but to really understand how this works, let's kind of break it down for you. here you can see, we have this dome of high pressure. what this does is basically traps in all of that hot, dry air over the same spots. your winds are moving basically in an off shore, especially in california, where it is taking it from the hot dry land and pushing it out over towards the ocean. what it does is helps to fuel and spread those fires out a little bit more. then again, we factor in the sundowner winds we talked about. in term arizona and north carolina, their biggest issue going forward is going to be the fact that we have no rain really in the forecast, the sherpa fire in california, again, no rain chance. we have a couple for the cedar fire, but you're going to have to wait, victor and christi, until the middle portion of the upcoming week. they need the relief soon. allison chinchar, thank you.

don't fall for directv. xfinity lets you download your shows from anywhere. i used to like that song. 21 minutes until the top of the hour now. the debate begins in the senate over a bill that would stop people on the terror watch list from getting guns. the measure faces long odds, but supporters say it has new momentum after 49 people were killed in orlando. one of the new voices in this latest gun control fight, former marine and former congressman, seth moulton, an iraq war vet, he was trained to use assault style rifles, and he says they do not belong in the hands of civilians. congressman, good to have you. >> good to be here.

community safe talking about reasonable restrictions that still protect the second amendment, reasonable restrictions, nine out of ten americans believe in. nine out of ten americans believe you ought to have a background check if you buy a gun. we ought to make sure terrorists on the no-fly list can't buy guns. these are reasonable things most americans agree with. we need the courage in washington to take action. >> let's look specifically at the terror watch list. 1.5 million people. do you believe every person would be an attacker? >> this is the republican attack. the republicans say the list isn't perfect. if that's the case, why do we even allow it to serve as a no-fly list. maybe that has something to do with the fact that these washington lawmakers fly home every weekend and are concerned. we can make this happen. right now, the situation is absurd. >> let me ask you, though. shouldn't that come first, the
4:43 am
argument, though, i don't have one on panel with me, i'm going to put the argument to you, 1.5 million, if you believe they're altl terrorists, you would be taking this constitutional right who are unduly on this list without the judicial oversight that is necessary. fix the list first and then -- >> i fully support having over sight, but the list exists. we have a no-fly list, it is not perfect. it is everybody's constitutional right to travel around the country, we decided as a society, we're going to err on the side of safety and make sure the people on that list are not allowed on airplanes. imagine the tsa, you have to go through security, but if you buy the ticket online, don't worry about it, just go right around, don't bother with security.
4:44 am
do you think you would get on a plane if you saw half, three quarters of the people going right around security an getting on the plane without any security checks whatsoever. that's the way the gun laws are written right now. it is absurd. democrats and republicans recognize this. that's why i'm working with republicans to find common ground on common sense measures to keep america safe. >> what do you make of the argument that we heard from donald trump in las vegas, saying essentially, this crowd was out gunned, that if they had guns strapped to their ankles, that they would have been able to protect themselves and the numbers would have not -- it would the not have been as horrific as they are. >> there are already 300 million guns in america. that's almost as many guns as citizens. yet we still have this gun violence. the facts are when you have reasonable restrictions on firearms, i'm not talking about taking away hunting rifles, i'm not talking about getting rid of the second amendment.
4:45 am
i support the second amendment. the facts are when you have reasonable restrictions, most americans, democrats and republicans, you'll have less gun violence. 70% of nra members believe we should have comprehensive background checks. that's nra members. yet the leadership is fighting against it. it is ridiculous. >> i could hear your opposition saying the gun laws in chicago, the gun laws in washington, we scan expand this beyond the u.s. borders, the gun laws in paris are some of the strictist in the world, and we can look at theirs, and it has not stopped gun violence. >> the fact of the matter is, there is a lot less gun violence in countries in europe that have tighter restrictions. it doesn't mean it is never going to happen. it doesn't mean a terrorist is never going to get a gun. what we ought to do is do whatever we can to keep america safe. the reality is if we have an

assault weapons ban, that crazy guy in florida would not have been able to go into a gunshop and legally purchase a gun. if we had some provision from the terror watch list that you've been on the terror watch list and you try to purchase a gun, then authorities are alerted. he wouldn't have been able to purchase a gun. these are reasonable things we can do as a community to keep our people safe. that's why i'm hearing from americans. i can't tell you how many people have come up to me in the past few days and said thank you, thank you for taking action. thank you for being willing to have a debate. thank you for trying to keep our community safe. >> all right, representative seth moulton, thank you so much for being with us on "new day." >> thank you. a police department of a major city, loses, think about this, its third police chief in eight days. this, of course, amid claims of elicit sex and text messages.
