terror in munich as an 18-year-old man goes on a shooting rampage at a shopping center. today the city mourns. a confidential fbi report gives significant new details into the mystery of missing flight mh-370. hillary clinton makes her vice presidential pick. hello and welcome to our viewers in the u.s. and around the world. i'm hannah vaughan jones and this is cnn "newsroom."

in munich, germany, police say a teenage gunman killed nine in a shooting rampage on friday evening. now they are trying to determine why, how he got his weapon, and whether he had any help. investigators believe the suspect, who apparently killed himself near the scene, was the lone shooter in this incident. this amateur video you're looking at now shows a man dressed in black who appears to be holding a gun. but it's not clear if this man is indeed the suspect. the shooting started at a mcdonald's restaurant. the restaurant was filled with children. all happening 6:00 p.m. on a friday evening. the gunman apparently crossed the street over to munich's biggest shopping center, owe olympia shopping center. he had iranian and german dual citizenship. he was just 18 years old and had been living in munich two years.

the police chief said he was shaken by the attack, especially the fact that young children were caught up in it. >> translator: yesterday was the most difficult day for me as the police chief in munich. it was one of the most difficult days i had during the last 40 years. the events of yesterday of this night makes us sad and speechless. our thoughts are especially with the victims. >> earlier on we spoke to erin mcwho is reporting from munich. >> reporter: i spoke to one man who is outside the mcdonald's as the attack unfolded. he described to me the horror as he held one of the victims in

his arms. the victim would later die. he also talked about what the attacker was yelling. he was railing against foreigners. take a listen. >> translator: i heard a scream of course. and you [ bleep ] foreigners. then the next shots were fired. i threw my bicycle to the side and went on my belly in the direction of the boy. i spoke with the boy, tried to make sure that he stayed alert. in the meantime, more shots were fired. i estimate 20 to 30. the boy asked me for help. i tried to talk with him. asked his name, age, if he had a girlfriend. i tried to make sure he looks at me, that his eyes are open. >> reporter: such is an emotional account.

as you can see behind me, this area outside the mall is still cordoned off. victims have yet to be identified. >> eric mcloughlin reporting there. this gunman, we know he is an 18-year-old. thought to be a lone attacker. we don't know the full identity, nor do we know a motivation yet. >> officials have not yet released his name. he was a dual citizen, iranian and german. certainly going to be speaking to the survivors and witnesses to see what else they can learn about this shooting rampage that unfolded during rush hour on a friday evening. it was believed shootings were going on in multiple locations.

it unfolded between mcdonald's and this shopping mall. at one point they thought there were three shooters. they told people to shelter in place, shutting down the metro system. they said based on the witness accounts and the video evidence, there was just one attacker. but what motivated something like this? yes, you had german authorities quickly saying this was an apparent terrorist attack. but they have not said what the specific motivation could be. they will analyze cell phone video which appears to show the shooter having an exchange with a witness. it's a profanity-laced exchange. he was insulting turks in this exchange. he did not seem to espouse any jihadist ideology. it ended with shots being fired. >> one eyewitness i remember

yesterday saying she believed she heard him saying allah al akbar, god is is great. numerous others still in hospital, including children. >> that's right. 16 people injured, taken to hospitals. nine victims. the shooter would be the 10th person who died. authorities say he died of a self-inflicted wound. a witness told cnn he appeared to be targeting children. we know children were among the casualties. it isn't clear if he was necessarily targeting children or just the fact that this was a shooting that took place at a mcdonald's on a friday afternoon. certainly a place where children would be, also this busy shopping center, the largest mall in munich and one of the busiest in the country. it would be filled with children, with families. we saw this horrific video of people running for their lives.

>> world leaders have been commenting on this and pledging their allegiance. >> we have been watching this unfold across europe for a year, maybe two years now. from russia, vladimir putin sending his condolences. angela merkel. barack obama lending his support as well. we know right now the focus is is the security situation in germany and there are these high-level security meetings being planned for later this morning. we should be hearing more from investigators as they continue their work today. >> alex, thanks very much indeed. the suspected shooter at a nearby parking garage. they recorded their heated conversation, which alex was just alluding to, with ended in a series of possible gunshots. a warning to our viewers some may find the following material disturbing.

>> very dramatic and disturbing video. evidence there possibly on the shooter exchanges with other passers-by as well. we spoke earlier on to one person who works inside the olympia shopping center that was targeted of course. lynn stein explains where when

she heard gunfire and the chaos that followed. >> i was inside. i was just trying to buy something. and i heard the shots fired. several shots. maybe six, seven. and people are confused. they were looking around and started running out. there was an emergency exit right at the shop i was at. so i ran outside as well. there were more shots. people came outside. people were very confused. they were running and they were screaming. later i heard the shots. i think they transferred to the parking lot. i haired shots there or coming from that direction. at that point, i went back inside the mall, because i went to check on my co-workers.

she didn't take the phone, and i couldn't reach her. >> lynn, we were talking last night as this was all unfolding in the city. you mentioned there that your co-worker was inside the shopping center as this was all unfolding. what has she said since, and how are you scoping in the aftermath of this attack? >> she hasn't really told me anything yet. i talked to her last night and know that she got back home safely. she was in the storage place i think inside the mall after the attack. that's as much as i know. >> and what about -- >> yeah. >> sorry, lynn, i was going to ask you about the mood of the city. the transport system was in lockdown. you yourself were on the street just outside the shopping center as the police were moving

everyone away cordoning everyone off the area. >> it is a very dire mood. it season so weird. the shopping center is going to be closed today of course. i'm not sure if it's still closed off entirely. it's weird. it's very weird to hear from it. i was getting goosebumps. >> do you feel safe? >> i would say yes. i'm at home. i made it home pretty late last night, but i did make it home. >> in terms of the public perception of the police handling the situation, the police themselves saying they responded very quickly when they first hear about a shooting

spree at the shopping spree. at one point police said put your hands in the air and walk away from the scene as they cordoned the area off. do you feel the police handling was effective, was appropriate? >> i'm pretty sure. where i was, there was no police at first. they were on the other i'd of the mall. i think they tried the best they could. all the police officers were at the scene. but they didn't -- pretty sure it was hard to cope with all the people there, all the witnesses. they brought us all to this one place after and tried to ask us all the questions and get our statements. there were hundreds of people there. i'm pretty sure it wasn't very easy.

i was hungry and everything after. yeah. i think they did it to the best of their knowledge and to the best that was possible at that point to really do, you know. >> and at first, of course, we thought there might be up to three perpetrators, up to three attackers. it's now transpired that police believe it was just lone gunman. is is there a sense of relief that it is one person in one location, and not a series of coordinated attacks with different people across the city? >> i'm not entirely sure. i just heard about it that it was supposed to be just one. i'm really hoping that that's true and there's not other people that are still running. if that's true, it will be a relief.

right now i hope it's true but i don't know. >> just in a couple of weeks's time, i believe it is oktoberfest, one of the busiest times of the year for the city of munich, do you think that that festival should go ahead as normal, or do you imagine it might now be canceled in the light of what's happened last night? >> i'm pretty sure it's a very nice time. so i would hope it gets canceled. but it's not likely. it is the biggest tourist attraction in the whole of germany once a year. they will probably up the security. i definitely wouldn't recommend going. >> lynn, we really appreciate all of your reaction, your analysis as well, this eyewitness account you have been giving us the last 12, 24 hours or so from the scene there in munich. thanks very much indeed. stay safe. >> social media reacting to

>> welcome back to the program. the mystery into the disappearance of malaysian airlines flight 370 is is deepening. an fbi report showed the pilot flew a suicide route on his home computer. the confidential report said the simulation was less than a month before mh-370 disappeared. matt rivers is live with more on these new details for us. two years on from when this plane first went down and this mystery is still unraveling, how did this mystery about the pilot come to light? >> reporter: this is an interesting development. if what is in this document is true this, adds a whole new wrinkle into this investigation and puts a lot more questions or

at least focuses the questions on the pilot. today when we received word of this "new york" magazine report they say they have obtained a document previously unseen as a part of the malaysian investigation into what happened here. basically, the details of that report citing this document, the "new york" magazine says that there were hard drives found in the home flight similarity of the pilot of mh-370, zaharie ahmed shaw. they were transferred to the fbi. during the fbi search, according to this article, they were able to discover some deleted data points that showed this pilot flew a simulated flight along the same route or a very is similar route into the southern indian ocean as the suspected route of the actual flight and the actual plane, mh-370. as you mentioned, this simulated flight allegedly took place, according to the article, within

a month prior to mh-370 disappearing. a very, very interesting piece of information. malaysian investigators for the longest time now really deflected questions away from the pilot. in the factual report released on the first anniversary of the plane's disappearance, they said the captain's ability to handle stress at work and home was good. there was no significant changes in his lifestyle or family stresses. but this report, if it is true, certainly casts more doubt on this pilot, app that. >> of course the families will be shocked to hear this news. any reaction from them as they struggle to come to terms with their loss and the fact that they just don't know what happened? >> is sure. we reached out to several families here in beijing. most of the people on board that flight were chinese. one man's mother was on that

welcome back to our viewers in the united states and around the world. you're watching cnn "newsroom" with me, hannah vaughan jones. authorities say there was only one shooter behind friday's attack that killed nine in munich, germany. the 18-year-old man was a german and iranian citizen. he killed himself. he was not known to police beforehand. his motive remains unclear. much more in the next few minutes. >> hillary clinton has chosen virginia senator tim kaine to be her running mate. she will introduce him at a campaign rally saturday in

miami. democrats close to the campaign say kaine got the stamp of approval from barack obama and former president bill clinton. and an fbi tprepbsic report shows the pilot of malaysian flight mh-370 flew a suicide route on his home similarity. the simulation was done less than a month before mh-370 went missing pack in 2014. returning to the deadly shooting incident in munich, germany. what made this lone gunman attack at a mcdonald's restaurant and a shopping center across the street? with the suspect dead, figuring out his motivations will be all the more difficult. amateur video from witnesses has provided some clues. some claim the gunman had been yelling about foreigners and insults turks in particular.

well, this attack is yet another disaster to hit europe. an entire continent now on high alert. the international security director at the asia-pacific. he joins us live. thanks for being on the program. they think this was an acute terror attack. but they're still not clear if this was islamist terrorism? sergeant, can you hear me? it's hannah vaughan jones in london. i was asking about the police response to what happened in munich. they thought this was to be terror related. we don't know if this was islamist terror or what the motivation might have been for this gunman. it looks like we haven't quite got communication there with the sergeant from the asia-pacific foundation. we will come back to him later

on as soon as we get that line of communication to him. in the meantime, the mass shooting comes as norway remembers another horrific attack. tpreurbgs yesterday, was the fifth anniversary of the 2011 norway attack. anders brelvik killed eight and 200 were wounded. he killed 69 at a youth camp. after his arrest he identified himself as an anti-muslim fascist. he was later convicted of mass murder. president barack obama is rejecting allegations that the united states was behind the failed coup in turkey. and he's been voicing his strong support for the turkish

president, tayyip erdogan. he says he's hopeful of turkey's future. >> on the hilly fringes of turkey's capital, he laid out a rosy vision of ankara's future. his job to keep everyone happy with the government. as we pass, an old lady in a green scarf listens carefully. we'll come back to her later. in the valley below, he proudly shows us a brand-new sports stadium. we've got a new swimming pool too he tells me. it's what the people here deserve. we got it thanks to president erdogan. back in his tiny office, he is busy. 30,000 local residents fend on him.

welcome back to cnn "newsroom". more on breaking news coverage in phaoupb in the aftermath of the shooting rampage that took place yesterday evening. nine people lost their lives. many still recovering from injuries in hospital. we were trying to speak to the international security director at the asia-pacific foundation. hopefully now he does join me on the line. sergeant, we have heard this is terrorism. it is thought to be an acute terror attack. but the motive is yet unclear. from what we've heard so far and the video that we've seen,

what's your analysis of why this attack happen? >> well, it's still a very unusual incident, hannah. in the immediate aftermath of the attack unfolding, it was the assumption this could be connected to isis because of what we have seen recently in nice and bavaria. but this seems to be a different motivation. yet with the authorities themselves are unclear whether this is connected to transnational extremist or is this potentially far right, or just an individual who seems to be extremely angry with life and society. more information will no doubt come out as the pieces of this come together. >> we know he is a dual citizen, iranian and german. can you read anything into that? >> it is unlikely his connection

to iran will provide any real motivation. how did he procure the weapons that he used to kill and injure people? that is something that needs to be looked at urgently. because of the fact that we're seeing very often, especially when we look at isis motivated attacks, people are able to buy on the black market. >> initially there were reports there were long rifles used in this attack. later on it's been confirmed now that the weapons that he used was indeed a pistol. in terms of germany's gun laws, how easy is it for an average citizen to get hold of a pistol? >> well, germany does have tight gun laws. not compared to, say, the uk. but they are quite stringent. especially for someone so young to procure at the age of 18. they will need top look into them equally.

mrs. may took charge monday of a debate backing the tri dent missile system. >> the whole point that a deterrent is our enemies need to know that we would be prepared to use it. >> the first box ticked. with the help of 140 labor mps who voted with her while jeremy corbin defied the policy and condemned nuclear weapons. wednesday came the next test. prime ministers must dominate to survive. two-thirds of corbin's mps voted no confidence anymore. so many have resigned posts he had to get those that remain to double up in some jobs is. wisely, they asked about unscrupulous employers. >> the remaining members on the opposition benches might be familiar with an unscrupulous

germany. >> the body language was promising. so was the language. >> good preparation is is important and this is also the interest of the eu. and we will wait for great britain to end the application and trigger the article. >> mrs. may had bought some time where it mattered most. before brexit, french president francois hollande warned darkly it would bring consequences. on thursday, paris. having previously urged immediately against, president hollande agreed britain needed a little time to prepare. but he still wanted talks as soon as possible. >> translator: it's in our common interest the sooner the better. >> the new prime minister has had a dream start. british officials were happy, too, with the continental trip that has opened communication channels. but the sticking point remains. the eu won't open until a brexit in britain that accepts free

in china first. >> yes. the province that surrounds beijing, they saw four days of rainfall. we have seen some images across this region, and it is devastating. this is what the forecast radar and satellite imagery looks like we go into the next several days. i checked the forecast. it looks like we will continue to see the rainfall. could be heavy across this region as well. and that will add even more aggravation. as hannah just mentioned already reports coming out of this area, 72 fatalities. and at least that many reported missing. it would not be surprising to see that number go up. and what we have seen across this region had been the plum rains. a very typical weather pattern for this time of year. typically, it begins from the south and gradually makes its way towards the north. that is in fact, what we see.

take a look at this from beijing towards the south. this is the axis of that precipitation that is the heaviest. not to be unspoken, it is from shanghai to the north of hong kong. another area of rainfall. doesn't look to be quite as heavy as we will expect as we go a little bit further towards the west. but it remains mostly dry through the forecast. but still those areas could be subjected to potentially heavy rainfall. on top of that, the temperatures are very hot. we have another heat-related story, as hannah mentioned as well, across the mid-western united states, the south-central united states, as this ridge of high pressure has moved very little. it looks like the peak of these hot temperatures materializes on saturday or for sunday. but this has been a press tent and has affected at least 100 million people in about 26 states. we start to see that precipitation wrapped around it

18-year-old man goes on a shooting rampage at a busy shopping center. new details. also developing, disturbing new evidence about malaysia airlines flight 370. did the pilot practice a suicide route? plus, the democratic duo, hillary clinton make her vice presidential pick and hits the trail with her new running mate later on today. hello and welcome to viewers in the united states and around

the world, i'm in london. and this is "cnn newsroom." police say a single gunman killed at least nine in munich, germany, friday evening. they're unsure about a number of open questions -- who this man was, and how and why he carried thought attack. at first, police thought as many as three shooters, perpetrators, may have been responsible. investigators believe now that a man who apparently killed himself near the scene is indeed the lone suspect. this amateur video shows a man dressed in black who appears to be holding a gun. however, it's not clear if it's the shooter in question. the gunman started his rampage at a mcdonald's restaurant before crossing the street to munich's biggest shopping center, the olympia center. police say the suspect held dual

citizenship with iran and germany. he was 18 and had been living in munich for at least two years. earlier we spoke with to erin mcloughlin from munich. >> reporter: i spoke to one man outside of the mcdonald's as the attack unfolded. he described to me the horror as he held one of the victims in his arms. the victim would later die. he also talked about what the attack attacker was yelling as this was going on. he was railing against "foreigners." take a listen. [ speaking german ] >> translator: i heard a scream at first. "you [ bleep ] foreigners. i am german. you will get it." the first shots were fired. a boy who was 14 or 17 years of age left of me collapsed, fell to the floor. then the next shots were fired. then i threw my bicycle to the side and went myself to safety on my belly in the direction of

the boy. i spoke with the boy, tried to make sure that he stayed alert. in the meantime, more shot were fired. i estimate about 20 to 30. the boy asked me for help. i tried to talk with him, asked his name, his age, if he had a girlfriend. i tried to make sure that he looked at me, that his eyes were open. >> reporter: such an emotional account. as you can see behind me, this area outside the mall is still cordoned off. investigators are still inside the mall conducting a forensic investigation. victims have yet to be identified. >> reporting there from munich. let's bring in alexandra field in london. the motive still unknown. there are more details emerging. >> that's right. police have carried out the search of an apartment in munich which appears to be related to their investigation into these attacks. as you reported, they initially believe there could have been three suspects carrying out the attacks. they now believe it was just a

lone gunman who ended up dying of a self-inflicted wound. they'll still try and determine whether or not this 18-year-old may have acted to organize the attack in concert with others. no word on whether or not that appears to be the case. they will certainly try to identify the motive behind this shooting, the shooting rampage that took place not only at a mcdonald's but also at the shopping mall, according to witne witness witnesses. the target included children. 16 injured, 10 died. the gunman among them. nine others killed in the horrific attacks. police are going to be looking at video that was recorded by witnesses including cell phone video. one of the videos appears to show a man who may have been the shooter screaming profanities. he's up on a rooftop speaking to one of the witnesses. he rails against foreigners. he rails against turks. it is an expletive-laced tirade. police will have to look to see what evidence they could possibly glean from that, if it does reveal any kind of

motivation for what seems to be such a senseless attack. >> people are going to be calling into question the intelligence in germany at the moment, especially given that it was a couple of days ago following from the nice attacks that we saw another attack on a german train and a man wielding an axe attacking passengers on that train. and is this considered to be a failure in intelligence? >> people across europe have been on high alert in the face of recent attacks and certainly nervous about the possibility of other attacks. you bring up the attack on the train. certainly that had people in germany on edge. there's a lot of discussions happening now at the highest level. you have german chancellor angela merkel securing a cabinet meeting to discuss what happened and, probably more pressingly, what precautions need to be in place at this moment. we understand that security has been ramped up across the country. while they look into what happened here, there's going to be that forward-facing look as to what kind of security precautions need to be in place

at this point. we are expecting another briefing from investigators later this morning which could reveal some more of the details of this investigation into the 18-year-old who apparently carried out the attack. >> and security beefed up around germany, presumably beefed up in other countries, as well, for fear of copycat attacks happening. >> right. remaining on high alert. we've seen it for not just days, weeks, months, the past year as attacks have unfolded. not clear who the attacker in this case could have been connected to, who he may have been inspired by, or whether or not he was directed to carry out the attack, but it's the kind of things intelligence and security officials will be looking into. this city was brought to its knees last night. a city of 1.5 million people. people told to shelter in place. police simply did not want gatherings of people because they didn't want any number of attackers to go after large groups of people. people were told to shelter in place, to lock themselves behind their doors on a summer night when you would have seen people out and about. the metro system, the transit system in the city had to come

to a standstill. the metros were evacuated. the systems are back up and running, except we understand that the metro system at the mall where the attack took place remains closed. obviously, that's still a crime scene. >> a city in lockdown and mourning, of course. the world has been reacting to what they've seen happen in munich and offering support. there will presumably be a huge police presence on the street, munich, and around germany. we've heard from the likes of president obama and others offering their support if needed. >> certainly internally there's a period of mourning. we know flags have been lowered to half staff. you do have president obama who has come out in support of germany, calling it a strong ally. russian president putin also expressing his condolences to german chancellor angela merkel. a foreign minister in germany talking about the horrific nature of the attack and really giving voice to what so many in that country, across europe, and around the world feel as they see evidence of another attack on civilians in europe. >> still in shock, of course. alex, thank you very much for jaeting us on the -- updating us on the latest.

>> very disturbing video there. possibly of the shooter involved. earlier on, we spoke to one woman who works inside the olympia shopping center where the gunman targeted all of those innocent people. lynn stine explains where she was when she heard gunfire and described the chaos that followed. >> i was inside, i was trying to -- trying to buy something. i heard the shots fired, several shot, maybe six, seven. people were confused and looking around. they started running out. and there was an emergency exit at the shop i was at, so i ran outside, as well. and then there were more shots. it just -- i stood by, and people came outside. i waited there to see what happened or what was going. on people were very confused and

running and screaming. and then later, i heard the shots, like i think they transferred, like they found there was a parking lot, parking house. i heard shots coming from that direction. i went inside the mall to check on my co-worker. she didn't check the phone, and i couldn't reach her. >> here at cnn, we wanted to check on that witness that you heard from. in the last hour, i spoke to lynn again and began by asking about the co-worker that she said she couldn't reach during the attack. >> she hasn't told me anything yet. i haven't talked to her since last night. i know that she got back home safely. she was in a storage place hidden away inside the mall after the attack. that's as much as i know. >> what about -- sorry, lynne. i was going to ask about the mood in the city.

yesterday we know the whole of munich was in lockdown. the transport system in lockdown. you yourself i think were on the street outside the shopping center as police were moving everyone away and cordoning off the immediate area. what's the mood like today? are people back on the streets? >> oh, i don't -- i don't think so. it's very -- it's a very dire mood. it's very -- i don't know. so weird, surreal. the shopping center is going to be closed today, of course. i'm not sure if it's closed off entirely, like the area or not. it's weird. very weird to hear from it and hear the reports. i get goosebumps listening to it. >> yeah. do you feel safe? >> yes. yeah, i'm at home. i made it home pretty late last

night, but i did make it home. facebook has activated its safety check for people in the munich area. users can check in to let friends, family, loved ones know they are okay. once they check in as safe. a notification is sent to their friends list. facebook enacted the system shortly after the shooting. hash tags #prayforgermany and #prayformunich are trending. images have been created to convey thoughts and prayers, many using pictures of munich, hearts, and the german flag. one twitter user wrote, "how many disasters do we need to unite humanity to love one another more than hate?" more on munich later this hour. another story that we're headlining today, the mystery to the disappearance of malaysian

airlines mh-370 is deepening. an fbi report shows the pilot flew a suicide route on his home computer. "new york" magazine obtained the confidential report. it says the simulation took place less than a month before mh-370 disappeared. cnn's matt rivers is live in beijing with more on the new details emerging. how did this latest information come to light, all of these years on? >> reporter: sure. that's the big question. we know that "new york" magazine published the article on line, claiming it had obtained a never-before-seen document from the malaysian police investigation into what happened here. and to go through the details of what this article says, citing that document, the article says that hard drives from the home flight simulator that were found in the home of the mh-370 pilot

were obtained by investigators and then given to the fbi. the fbi then does their analysis, goes through and found six or so different delete data points. when they put the data together, what it appeared to show is that the mh-370 pilot on his flight simulator flew a simulated flight to the southern indian ocean. now, that flight path lines up pretty closely with the suspected flight path of mh-370. they're very close. if you see them in the same image side by side in the article, they are very, very close. obviously that has major implications if what is in this document is actually true. then the other things that's interesting here is that the simulated flight path, according to this article, was flown, the simulation, was flown less than a month prior to mh-370 disappearing. this is a very, very big piece of news in this investigation.

and certainly casts a lot more doubt on this pilot in terms of his role in what happened. >> and still, of course, a man of mystery as to what happened. does the search continue for the wreckage of this plane or has it all wound up now? >> reporter: at this point, there's a designated search area that officials have been searching for a while now of some 120,000 square kilometers. 110,000 square kilometers of that area has been searched so far. another 10,000 left to go. officials say they're not hopeful that the plane is in that area. it was just yesterday that the ministers of transportation from china, malaysia, and australia came out and said that they will be suspending the search after that remaining area is completely gone through, and assuming no plane is found, the search will be suspended. we've had a lot of information about this investigation over the last several days. how this new report from "new york" magazine plays into that, if it changes the course of

statement calling the virginia democrat corrupt kaine." donald trump says he won't accept former rival ted cruz's support even if he offers it. a different tone than the speech trump gave on thursday at the republican national convention, a night dedicated to party unity. >> somebody got booed the hell out of a place by thousands and thousands of people. there wasn't one person in the room -- [ cheers ] >> not one. and then they said, there may not be unity. unit? there wasn't one person in the room who was -- including the texas delegation, right? honestly, he may have ruined his political career. i feel so badly. i feel so badly. and you know, he'll come and endorse over the next little while because he has no choice. i don't want his endorsement. what difference does it make? i don't want his endorsement. i have such great -- i don't want his endorsement.

ted, stay home, relax, enjoy yourself. let's look closer at what's happening in u.s. politics now. i'm joined by the representative of the u.s. chatham house thi think tank. such negative rhetoric across the board particularly from donald trump. why is it for now at least fear trumps hope? >> trump is counting on what's carried him this far in the election, through the primaries. basically saying, you know, the world is a dangerous and frightening place. i'm the only one who can protect you. drawing that kind of circle around himself and saying, you know, be exclusionary to all other possibility, has struck a certain nerve with -- a large enough portion of the electorate that's gotten him to the nomination. whether that's -- that will be true for a general electorate remains to be seen. he's -- he's seen the strategy work, and i think he thinks, well, this has worked so far, i'm going to run with it through november. >> we've had lying ted, crooked

hillary, of course. now corrupt kaine. what do you make of the rung senate. >> he's a fairly safe choice. as said earlier, he has executive experience, legislative experience. he ran the democratic national convention. he's not going to excite anyone. he's particularly not going to excite the progressive base. i think that clinton is counting on the fact that given bernie sanders has endorsed her, given the polls show an increasing numbers of sanders supporters moving into her column, albeit reluctantly, she doesn't need to bring that part of the wing on side. she needs to demonstrate that her ticket is the one which is safe and the -- the parrot hand that can be trusted with the levers of power in a dangerous and uncertain world. >> why is it that she's gone for the safe pair of hands? the movement seems to get more momentum from controversy, nasty rhetoric, as well, yet the clinton side seems focused on

safe pair of hands, trusted experience, as well. >> paradoxically i think you've ended up with two vice presidential candidates who have a similar profile. both pence and kaine have been in legislatures, they've governed midsize, purple states. politically obviously, they're very different. and the way that the campaign selected the running mates has been very different. you actually have two with similar profiles serving very different roles in the administration. but you know, that seems to be the choice this year. >> do you think that with the democratic national convention coming up now, they're going to have a change of tack or to try to galvanize supporters in the way that trump is galvanizing his supporters and, indeed, trying to take on bernie sanders, as well, trying to get all of bernie's supporters on his side? >> i think that what kaine's pick does for clinton is to demonstrate that she's confident in her approach so far. she's not radically altering her message. bringing in elizabeth warren would have said this is a john mccain in 2008 moment.

welcome back to our viewers here in the uk, also in the united states, and around the world, you're watching "cnn newsroom." i'm hannah vaughan jones. this hour, police say a single gunman killed at least nine people in munich friday evening. an iranian and german dual citizen has been determined the suspect who was killed at the scene. hillary clinton has chosen virginia senator tim kaine as her running mate. she will introduce him later today in miami. democrats say kaine got the stamp of approval from barack obama and former president bill clinton. new details in the mh-370 mystery. "new york" magazine reports that the pilot of the flight simulated a suicide flight less

than a month before the dplanpl disappeared. a report shows a suspected route two years ago. more on the shooting rampage in munich that left nine people dead. it's not certain if the man in black, who you see in this video is, indeed the shooter. however, a witness tells cnn the gunman screamed that he would kill foreigners just before he opened fire. authorities say the suspect, who was later found dead not far from the scene of the incident, was just 18-years-old. we're also hearing that police in munich have searched an apartment in connection with friday's attack. earlier on, i spoke to the terrorism expert who explained what he thought might have led the gunman to carry out this sort of attack.

>> in the immediate aftermath of the attack unfolding, there was the assumption that this could be connected to isis because of what we've seen recently in nice and bavaria. but this seems to be a different motivation as yet, with the authorities themselves unclear whether this is connected to transnational extremism, is this potentially far right, or is this an individual who seemed to be extremely angry with life and society? more information will no doubt come out as the pieces of the puzzle, of this man's profile are put together. >> we don't know his name or anything. we know he's an 18-year-old german-iranian dual citizen. can you read anything do that? >> unfortunately that itself doesn't provide much clues. it's unlikely that his connection to iran will provide any real illustration as to his motivation. one things that will need to be looked at as how did he procure

the weapons he used to kill and injure people. that is something that needs to be looked at urgently because of the fact that we're seeing very often, especially when we look at isis-motivated attacks, that people are able to buy weapons on the black market, in the balkans. where did this person pick up his weapons? >> initially there were said there were long rifles used in the attack. now it's been confirmed the weapon he used was a pistol. in terms of germany's gun laws, how easy is it for an individual, an average citizen to get hold of a pistol? >> germany does have tight gun laws, not say compared to the uk. but they are quite stringent. and there are security checks that are done. and e ispecially someone so you to procure it, age 18, they will need to look into. it keep in mind that germany has a fragile system, so each province has different rules as

to the gun laws. and bavaria is not necessarily the same as the rest of germany. these issues are something that the authorities will have to look at. but in fairness to the police in munich, they handled the situation the best they could, especially using social media to update people which is unusual. i think it was appreciated. >> chief europe correspondent for politico joining me live now from germany's capital, berlin. good to talk to you. we were speaking last night in the immediate aftermath of the shooting rampage. at the time it seemed like there could have been up to three attackers involved, multiple locations across the city, as well. and possible jihadi links. although at the moment, it's unclear as to what the motive might have been. what's your assessment of how the investigation is unfolding so far? >> so far it looks like a lot of the rumors that were flying around last night have turned out not to be true. there is only one shooter, this 18-year-old of iranian-german

descent. it appears to be somebody who was born and grew up in germany, initial reports suggest now that his parents emigrated to germany in the 1990s and that he was born here. so it does not at first glance now appear to be an islamic-related attack. at one point last night, he was shouting out "i am a german," which is not the kind of things you would normally hear from an islamic terrorist. so we should hear more in the coming minutes when the munich police give their press conference. i think one of the big questions will be in addition to how he got this weapon is why it took police so long to determine that he was the only shooter. and that the reports about other men roaming the city with long rifles that really kept the city on lockdown and forced the closure of the main railway station and public transportation, why it took them

so long to determine that that was not the case. >> we understand there have been various raids going on, as well. if the suspect was a resident of munich and had been living there for some two years, as reports suggest he, had if this is domestic terrorism, as well, it will -- reports suggest that he was involved in domestic terrorism, as well, it will be wondered if this is off the radar of police. >> there was no criminal record. there was a video of him yesterday having an exchange with a resident in one of the houses where he was roaming around and shooting, where he said that he had been institutionalized at one point, meaning he had been in psychiatric care. so especially if it turns out that he had psychological problems and was still able to buy a handgun, that will be something that the germans will have to look at clearly, very

closely. a lot of people are going to have questions about that today. >> as far as the government is concerned, where you are in berlin, what kind of response have we heard yet if anything at all from the chancellor, angela merkel, in terms of the security inflation will be put in place across the country? >> well, so far we've heard very little. she's due to speak in a couple of hours. and her interior minister is also going to speak this afternoon. and i expect that they'll provide us with more details about any steps they're going to take. that said, if there are no terrorist link to this attack, it might be -- there might be little that they can actually do. there are fairly strict gun laws in germany, but as i say, if it turns out that this young man was able to buy this weapon and ammunition, despite whatever psychological issues he may have had, that could be something that they'll have to address quickly. >> matthew, is this considered

in the aftermath of the shooting rampage last night. i want to join our will ripley live in the german city for us. what's the latest you're hearing? describe the mood in this city of mourning this morning. >> reporter: hannah, we're expecting a press conference any time now where we could learn some more information about this investigation which has been ongoing throughout the overnight hours. we know that there was an apartment here in munich that was the focus of a police raid. we might get more information about what was found there. we believe it was tied to the investigation of this 18-year-old german-iranian teenager. an-year-old who was somehow -- an 18-year-old who was somehow able to obtain weapons. down the street here, starting at that mcdonald's and then moving into the shopping center, the olympia mall, able to take nine lives before going about a half a mile away from the crime scene here and taking his own life, shooting himself. in addition, at least 16 people injured. several of them still in

critical condition at hospital right now. and there are so many questions that people have here. how did this happen, why did this happen, why did it take seven hours for the city to announce basically a cautious all clear after essentially being on lockdown when we were talking about an incident with a single gunman isolated to the area? you'll remember when we were speaking yesterday, there were many witness accounts saying up to three different men, three attackers. i think the number-one question now that the situation appears to be contain sudden to understand the motivation -- contained is to understand the motivation. were there warning signs? was there inspiration, and where did it come from? each of the tragic events, investigators hope to learn something to prevent it from happening again. here we are. in eight days, three major acts of violence against civilians here in western europe. >> one of the things we may hear from the police chief when he speaks in the next few minutes, hopefully, is perhaps more about the identity of the gunman.
