huge thunderstorms here. also, thunder of the political variety, a seismic shift in the race for the white house. don't laugh at me, david gregory. you're not even on yet. donald trump getting a bounce from the republican national convention. want to take a look at the numbers? >> let's do it. they're just released. these are the new cnn/orc national poll. trump is now ahead of hillary clinton by five points in this four-way race when you count the other candidates. this is his largest lead in nearly a year. >> sure, he has not been up in a while. let's take a look at the two-way race. trump still has a lead, three points over clinton. now, let's take a look into these numbers. we have a great panel for you, but there's certainly bad news right off the top. 68% of registered voters feel clinton is not honest and trustworthy. the convention here in philadelphia already overshadowed on that score by wikileaks, these e-mails that

the controversy also overshadowing clinton's big introduction of her vice presidential pick, virginia senator tim kaine. the newly minted democratic ticket sitting down for their first interview together, keeping their focus squarely on the republicans. >> i don't know what their convention was about other than criticizing me. i seem to be the only unifying theme that they had. >> reporter: kaine showing he's ready to defend his running mate on the campaign trail. >> when i see this, you know, crooked hillary or see the lock her up, it's just ridiculous. it is ridiculous. and look, most of us stopped the name calling thing about fifth grade. >> reporter: now, this week former new york city mayor and independent michael bloomberg is set to endorse and give a speech here in this convention hall behind hillary clinton, all part of an effort to reach out to those moderate and independent and swing voters now that polls show she's losing this race to

donald trump. alisyn? >> okay, manu. thanks so much for all of that. joining us now to discuss all of this is our panel, cnn political analyst and host of the david gregory show pod cast, david gregory. senior editor for "the atlantic," ron brownstein, and meave reston. our new cnn poll just out shows what happened after the republican national convention to donald trump's numbers and hillary clinton's numbers. let me put up for our viewers one more time the two-way race. this shows the bounce he got. he got six points out of that republican national convention. he's now at 48% to her 45%. she went down four points. what else do you see, ron? >> it's a good poll for donald trump overall, especially because of that number of 48. he's had trouble getting above 42, 43 in any national polling
3:06 am
since mid-may. i believe this is the largest number he's had in his camp in any serious national poll. so overall, it's a good poll. it's a bad poll for hillary clinton in the sense they succeeded in driving some negatives about her. two things worth noting. you can be ahead after your own convention and lose. there's no guarantee. you should be ahead after your own convention. >> and historically you are ahead. >> and there's one big red flag in here, and chris is going to smile at me. even within this poll, which is a very good poll for trump t shows the bottom dropping out for clinton with the blue-collar whites, but it showings hs her g among college educated voters. no democrat in the history of polling going back to 1952 has ever won college educated white voters. if she does in the end, it is very hard for him to make the electoral college math add up. >> this poll is amazing. we've already forgotten all of the drama of the republican
3:07 am
convention in those first three days when everyone was saying it was a dumpster fire with putting down the delegate revolt an people screaming on the floor and ted cruz and the plagiarism thing. then donald trump came in, introduced by ivanka, obviously, with a very positive speech that clearly has helped with independents, and even though he laid out this dark and stormy vision, clearly that is working with some people. in our new poll, you see his numbers. he's increasing his edge among independents. it's going to be a very -- >> a big bump with blue-collar workers also. >> that was a big bump. >> couple points. first of all, i remember the drama i wrote about in my journal. the hillary negative numbers, you know, i think a big strategy for donald trump is to drive her negatives, of course, but it's also to suppress her support. i think such a huge challenge going into this convention for
3:08 am
her is that she cannot take for granted this obama coalition, as tight as she holds on to him from 2008 and 2012. i think that's why party unity is so important. you know, still something we have to see. the other piece about this is that we see relative parody. i think the clinton campaign certainly wants to come out of here establishing some distance from trump by defining him and reckless, as risky, that she can hold throughout the rest of the time this law and order theme and all that has the potential to really split the country in two. >> that's the thing. you look at this poll, and look, we're only at halftime. we're going to get another poll after the democratic convention and several weeks after that before you have a real sense of where the race is. all the indications are that ult f -- all the fissures we have in american politics, particularly because of trump, he pushes in

both directions. >> i think that's all true. that's why i call you the professor. however, there is this parallel competition going on as well, which is him being dangerous and unqualified versus 68% of the people polled, registered likely voters, saying she's not honest and trustworthy. have any of us ever seen a number that high before? i mean, in politics and people who are contending to be president. >> august 1974. >> he was already in. >> that is a very high number. >> but i mean, if you -- and it's just amazing that continuing to talk to clinton voters out there. i mean, they're going to vote for her, but they're still bringing up the trust and integrity issues. the campaign has not been able to do anything to change that. i don't know at this late in the game how you do that.
3:10 am
>> but they're both running campaigns tearing it down the other side, making it a choice. her test this week, can she possibly putting to some kind of biography that's new for people who have not made a judgment about her. it's so baked into her persona. >> so what do you do? >> let's look at the four-way race. let's look at this. this also seems to benefit donald trump. look at these numbers. trump had 37. afterwards, 44. before, clinton had 42. afterwards, 39. look what happened to gary johnson. he went from 13% to 9% and jill stein from 5 to 3. >> a 12-point protest vote right now in this polling with unpredictable results may be, according to this, helping trump a little bit. definitely something to worry about. >> i think also at this juncture in the race, i think those numbers for both stein and johnson will rebound because
3:11 am
we're at a point in the race where we're much more focused on trump and clinton. people are giving them kind of a second look. i think we will continue to have this protest vote debate all the way through the fall. >> they're siphoning votes from hillary clinton. >> well, i think gary johnson particularly has been stronger among young people, which is a problem for clinton. that's a core part of the obama coalition. the other thing is in the long run, i think the larger the protest vote, the better the chances for trump. this poll has him at 48. this is immediately after the convention. he did expand his support. it's tough for donald trump to get to 50. the lower the number you need to win, the better i think his chances of getting there. >> which is all about suppressing votes for her. >> if these college suburban republicans are just so depressed by him and they don't come out and vote, then it doesn't really -- it changes the math for him. if you pump up the blue-collar vote, he's in good position. >> you look at this vote, you're
3:12 am
looking at a 35-point lead among noncollege whites. you have a competitive candidate in donald trump across the entire rust belt. but again, that problem with the college whites combined with his difficulty among minorities, you'd have a hillary clinton counting on virginia, north carolina, florida, colorado, nevada. we could see a very inverted electoral college kind of strategy. if this poll holds up, donald trump is a very formidable rust belt candidate. >> his brain is just a calculator. amazing. >> it should say texas instruments. >> doesn't it suggest all the things that pundits focused on last week, there's chaos, there's plagiarism, voters don't look at that sort of thing. and maybe his speech about how scary these times are is the thing they most took away. >> i think it definitely is the thing they most took away from
3:13 am
the convention and just talking to voters over the last couple days, clearly they were remembering thursday night as opposed to everything that had happened earlier in the week. but we're now going into the democrats' convention. all of that will be churned up again. so it will be really interesting to see the polls afterward. >> some of the voters we've been talking about in the suburbs, it doesn't mean they don't hold on to it, but still revealing numbers. >> but it also goes on an assumption that chaos is bad for you in politics. we don't know that to be true anymore when it comes to donald trump. that convention was chaotic, and it seemed to work for him. it seems to be something he cultivates. >> that speech overwhelms everything else. the nominee's speech is more than 50%. >> then they said that. to their credit, they said that thursday night they were going to be able to clean it up and move on. that's what happened. >> panel, thank you very much. great to have you here. >> donald trump, for his part, digging in his heels on his signature and controversial idea, the proposed ban on

to three. the main crime scene is outside club blu. it's in the parking lot. according to cnn producer chuck johnson, who's at the scene, he said there are evidence markers everywhere. it's apparent that a lot of shots were fired outside the club. the two other scenes that police are processing right now, one is at a home where apparently shots were fired at the house and at a vehicle. one person was injured there. then there's another scene nearby, an intersection where one of the people obtained were stopped by officers. we should tell you they're still canvassing for suspects at this point. they haven't called any the people they've detained suspects so far. one important point to make, on the club's facebook page, there was a flyer for the party last night. it was apparently teen night. there was no i.d. required to get in. so we're learning that all ages were there. at a local hospital, there are victims as young as 12 years

well, hearing about stories like senator kaine who has just worked hard. a very humble beginning. being able to reach out to the american people. as well as secretary clinton advocating for all that work she's done on behalf of children. that's where people want us to be talking. >> okay. the democrats, however, are already embroiled in their own controversy because of these leaked e-mails that do seem to illustrate that the system was rigged against bernie sanders. what do you say to that? >> first off, chairwoman and congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz did the right thing. clearly she didn't want to see a distraction going into this amazing week with democrats as well. look, we all know that those e-mails should not have been sent as well about senator sanders. i think we all agree with that. as we go into this week to make sure that we're coming together and reaching out to the american people, we're earning their trust, holding that trust, that's what i'm looking forward to. >> but they were sent. how do you explain that it seems
3:43 am
that the content of those e-mails suggests that the dnc never wanted bernie sanders to be the nominee, they wanted hillary clinton to be the nominee, and they were putting their finger on the scale for her. >> well, alisyn, as i said, those e-mails should not have been sent. i think it was very clear that people all across the country, especially with secretary clinton, the leadership now across the country with democrats, we all agreed. >> so what was going on at the dnc? >> i'm not certain what was going on. looking at this, it's clear that coming out of this, though, we're moving forward and we're united. we're strong now going into this week. >> this is from brad marshall, dnc cfo, saying they should somehow try and denigrate bernie sanders' religion. let me read it. for kentucky and west virginia, can we get someone to ask about his belief? does he believe in god? he had skated on saying he had a jewish heritage, but i heard he's an atheist. my southern baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a
3:44 am
jew and an atheist. it seems irrefutable that the dnc was stacking the deck. >> clearly the staff that sent this e-mail, there was no reason why this e-mail should have ever been sent. it should have never been authored. it should have never been mentioned. those are thoughts that have no place in what we do as a democratic party. there's a reason why there's action that's being taken today and why we're united going into this week. that's the difference between democrats and republicans. i don't think you're going to find a democrat out there or a person out there that's going to say a positive thing about that ugly e-mail. >> congressman lujan, thanks so much for being on "new day." >> great to be with you. >> all right. we now know who the number twos are in this race, indiana governor mike pence for republicans, of course, virginia senator tim kaine for democrats. so how will they be used on the campaign trail, and where do they stand on the issues? we'll explore the number twos next.

"i don't remember." he's going like, "i don't remember!" our children and grandchildren will look back at this time... ...at the choices we are about to make. the goals we will strive for. the principles we will live by. and we need to make sure that they can be proud of us. i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message.

i want somebody who will can be candid and will tell me, hey, i don't agree with this, or could you think about it somewhat differently? i don't think i have all the answers. i think that we'll be a good team. i believe we'll work well together. i believe that he will give me his best advice. >> and he said nothing during that entire sound bite. that is obviously the vice presidential nominee tim kaine there. that's hillary clinton speaking about her running mate. that was their first interview together last night on "60 minutes." many are praising clinton's choice of kaine as an experienced, steady, and likable figure who will humanize her, but there are some sanders people who feel like he ain't to the left enough. let's discuss the proins and co of both vp picks. and we have the big cnn poll numbers that tell us what the net effect of the republican
3:50 am
republican convention was. we have john phillips. he's a donald trump supporter. he's also a radio commentator, one of the best voices in the business. good to have you both. let's look at these big numbers. let's look at the four-way race first. that's including obviously dr. stein and gary johnson with clinton and trump. you'll see trump has taken the lea lead. now let's look at the two-way race between clinton and trump. please, if you would. there we go. this is important for two reasons. you see your bounce. we haven't had big bounces in recent elections. that's a plus for trump. and he's above 46%. that was a ceiling for him. this is the first time we've seen that number pop. it's the first time he's been if the lead against clinton in many months. so this is all relevant. now, on the vp side we have some numbers as well.
3:51 am
obviously the polls were done before tim kaine entered the picture. put that up just for our little bit of a measure of how people feel about governor from indiana mike pence fares, and it's positive, his number there. so pre-rnc, favorable poip of mike pence. post, 63. that takes us to the panel. you have all these numbers to digest. i don't see how you qualify them as anything but good for your side, john. what do you take most confidence in? >> if you go to the wikileaks scandal right now, i think that's very damaging to hillary clinton. >> i'm asking you for the poll numbers, and you just can't wait. >> here it is. we have to put it into context of the convention. what was the story line coming out of the republican convention, that hillary clinton is crooked. what happens as soon as you start the democratic convention, you have this wikileaks document dump where it looks like the democratic party fixed it for hillary clinton over bernie sanders. so it feeds into the narrative that trump put out there. now you're seeing a bounce in the polls post-republican
3:52 am
convention, when everyone thought it was a disaster, the party's in disarray. >> bounce isn't unusual. >> he did get a bump. he is in the lead. now hillary clinton has to try to take the story line that donald trump set and defined, and she's got to try to turn it around. >> can i tell you, though, no poll is going to matter until this whole race settles a little bit. i would say two weeks from now when we get a little distance from both these conventions, the polls will settle and we'll get a real look at the race. it's interesting that everyone thinks hillary clinton is a slight favorite. the polls are going to be all over the place. >> how damaging do you think the wikileaks content -- the content of those e-mails that show there was something suspicious going on from the dnc? >> ultimately, i don't think it's going to be damaging to hillary clinton because i don't think hillary clinton had anything to do with it. it is very unfortunate. i think the people who are responsible are going to -- you know, are taking the hit on it, as they should. >> it's just another e-mail
3:53 am
controversy. that can't be good. >> it's very unfortunate that people acted irresponsibly, but this had nothing to do with hillary clinton. these are not people who even work for her. >> now they do. >> well, not yet. not until thursday. >> but what's that about, richard? how do you feel about that move? you have debbie wasserman schultz step down as chairwoman because of these e-mails. >> not yet. she's here for four more days. >> because that's when the convention ends. but you have the punitive head in donna brazile. should hillary clinton absorb dws, debbie wasserman schultz, into her campaign given what's just happened? >> i don't think that's going to happen. >> you don't think that will happen? it's just a rumor? >> i don't think it'll happen. i think debbie wasserman schultz has served as the head of dnc with some distinction and now some issues. we're going to move on from that. but i don't think it involves hillary clinton because hillary clinton had nothing to do with it. these aren't people who work for her.
3:54 am
i'm sure she wouldn't want this. these are people expressing their own personal preference. i'm not defending it. they should not have done it. it's inexcusable. people who are responsible have taken the hit. >> if it's 11:00 at the hotel, somebody needs to tell debbie it's time to check out because she's here through the duration of the convention. >> i love these republicans who are getting involved in who should be running the democratic party. >> i'll say this, donna brazile is one of the smartest minds in politics. >> so she scares you, right? >> with anderson cooper last night, she said even more e-mails should be expected to come out that will be embarrassing to the democratic party. >> that was a prediction. >> what's in those e-mails? >> not a fact. >> she said it worried her a little bit. let's talk quickly about the vice presidential pick. does that move the needle in this race? do these choices move the needle? >>. >> i think you see with tim kaine -- you saw that chemistry the two of them have together. you saw how he relaxes her. i think she -- we all know she
3:55 am
connects best with voters when she's informal, when she feels comfortable, when she's relaxed. he obviously -- there's a great chemistry between them. he's a strong progressive. i think we're going to be unified. he's going to help unify the party. on the other side, i think mike pence is a conservative, he's out of step with the mainstream. there's obviously no chemistry between him and donald trump. trumpz went in, tried to give him a little smooch, he stepped back. >> just because he tried to kiss him. >> he made that big push for gay voters. >> who? >> donald trump. >> well, i don't know where this is going. >> neither do we. gentlemen, thank you. we'll wrap it on though note. thank you very much. >> all right. no better way to start off a convention than that. this is the dnc's moment. how do they counter what happened with the rnc? donald trump got a bump in our new poll numbers. so what does the dnc have to do

4:00 am
>> on his worst, worst, worst day, tim kaine is a hundred times better than donald trump will ever be. >> let's defeat her in november. >> i don't know what their convention was about other than criticizing me. >> most of us stopped the name-calling thing about fifth grade. >> the dnc was not running a fair operation. i'm not shocked. >> i'll take our reince over her any day. forget it. >> this is "new day" with chris cuomo and alisyn camerota. >> good morning, everyone. welcome back to your new day. we are live here in philadelphia, where the democratic national convention begins today. we do begin with some breaking news. there is a major shift in the race for the white house. donald trump getting a notable bounce after his convention. let's take a look at these new cnn national poll numbers out just one hour ago. trump is now ahead of hillary clinton by five points in a four-way race. this is his largest lead in
4:01 am
nearly a year. >> in a two-way race, number is more dramatic. trump has a three-point lead over clinton. you have to remember, why is that dramatic, it's less than the four way. no, this is the first time we've seen trump at 48%. this is also the first time he's been beating clinton head to head in months. so this is a big deal. and it comes in context of not the best start for this campaign either -- or this convention either. look at this number in the poll. honest and trustworthy about hillary clinton, yes, 30%, no, 68%. how does she fix that in the convention here in philadelphia, which is already overshadowed by the resignation of the party's chairwoman because of these e-mails that wikileaks dumped on the internet that shows there was some, you know, hostility towards bernie sanders within the dnc. we have every angle covered. let's begin with senior political report eer manu raju.
4:02 am
>> reporter: hey, chris. that's right. debbie wasserman schultz scheduled to speak before the florida delegation here this morning and here in this convention hall. how will bernie sanders supporters react when she does speak in that is an open question. but this much is clear, the democratic convention starting off with a bit of drama. >> i'm with her! i'm with her! >> reporter: democratic national committee chairwoman debbie wasserman schultz forced to resign amid a massive e-mail leak, showing dnc staffers favoring hillary clinton over bernie sanders during the democratic primary. more than 1,000 sanders supporters marching in philadelphia in protest. sanders himself, who has been calling for wasserman schultz's resignation for months, telling cnn he's not surprised that the dnc was working against him. >> it is an outrage and it's sad that you would have people in
4:03 am
important positions in the dnc trying to undermine my campaign. >> reporter: clinton's campaign manager pointing his finger at russian hackers, suggesting they had a hand in the leaks. >> experts are now saying that the russians are releasing these e-mails for the purpose of actually helping donald trump. >> reporter: trump's campaign chairman flatly denying the suggestion. >> it's just absurd. i don't know what you're talking about. it's crazy. >> reporter: on capitol hill, wasserman schultz had few defenders. harry reid was pushing for weeks to replace her, including at one point floating his number two, dick durbin, as a replacement. the interim chair will now be donna brazill, al gore's former campaign manager and a cnn political analyst. brazile, who has ties with both clinton and sanders, warned that friday's leak may just be the tip of the iceberg.
4:04 am
>> more e-mails are coming. i don't know the substance, but i know there are lots of stuff we might have to apologize for. >> reporter: trump quick to pounce on the political turmoil, posting this tweet. the democrats are in a total meltdown, but the biased media will say how great they are doing. e-mails say the rigged system is alive and well. this scandal threatening to shatter the uneasy truce between sanders' progressive base and the party establishment ahead of today's convention themed united together, where bernie sanders, elizabeth warren, and michelle obama will headline the first night. the controversy also overshadowing clinton's big introduction of her vice presidential pick, virginia senator tim kaine. the newly minted democratic ticket sitting down for their first interview together, keeping their focus squarely on the republicans. >> i don't know what their convention was about other than
4:05 am
criticizing me. i seem to be the only unifying theme that they had. >> reporter: kaine showing he's ready to defend his running mate on the campaign trail. >> when i see this, you know, crooked hillary or see the lock her up, it's just ridiculous. it is ridiculous. and look, most of us stopped the name calling thing about fifth grade. >> reporter: now, clinton's slipping poll numbers underscoring the stakes ahead of this week's convention. democrats pulling out all the stops, including a speech this week by the former new york city mayor and independent michael bloomberg, hoping to give clinton some appeal with moderate and swing voters. chris? >> boy, i'll tell you, manu, just when you say that'll never happen in this race, it happens. thank you for that. we got some other big headlines that are shockers. this new poll. how about this, the wikileaks where all these e-mails get dumped about the dnc, and it turns out according to the u.s. government that russia did it. what is going on here?
4:06 am
let's bring in former governor of michigan and senior adviser for correct the record, governor jennifer granholm, and bernie sanders' campaign manager jeff weaver. great to have you both. >> hey, we're here together on the same page. >> i know. >> but not on the same team. >> you guys look happy. >> do you consider yourselves on the same team? >> absolutely. >> even after these e-mails? just as you suspected. >> as i said for a long time. but look, i think debbie wasserman schultz did the right thing. i think now is the time for party unity. i think she put the party ahead of herself. she stepped back. i think we're going to of a chance to turn the page. we're going to have new leadership there. i think we'll have a new direction in the party. i think we'll be ready to fight in the fall. >> jeff, that's really gracious. you and senator sanders have been gracious throughout all the revelation of these leaks. just one more point on this. you did long suspect this. so what was it like to then see it in print and have the evidence and have it confirmed? >> well, you know, you can say suspect. i think we long knew it based on
4:07 am
how we were treated during the campaign. i think for everybody else in the world, this was really sort of bringing it out in black and white. but look, this happened. we knew it happened then. mow is the time to go forward. the thing to do now is elect hillary clinton and defeat donald trump. that's what we have to do. >> do you think the russians were behind it? >> i have no idea. >> the u.s. government thinks the russians with were behind i. >> i'm not saying they're not. >> let's say the russians are behind this. what does that mean in terms of the dynamic -- >> it means you better watch your e-mails. i'm not kidding you. anything is subject to hacking a the this point. so, you know, you heard others saying there will be more e-mail. i'm sure there will be. >> why the dnc e-mails? >> well, i don't know. who do the russians favor in this race? >> i don't know. what's your speculation? >> who's bffs with putin? >> donald trump said he's a strong leader. he never said they were friends. >> obviously the clinton campaign has suggested there was some sort of working in cahoots
4:08 am
between the russians and the trump campaign. do you go that far? >> i haven't seen the evidence of that. >> you want nothing to do with these e-mails. they can't go away fast enough for both of you guys. you're trying to come together. this is proof of what has made it a journey. >> here's what i would say about this. this is a story. it's a story on the first day of the convention. it has been addressed. debbie wasserman schultz has decided not to be the story. she has stepped down. we are moving forward. tonight's theme is all going to be about hillary clinton, about her focus on her life's fight for families, for children. you're going to see people who are giving testimonials about her. you're going to see michelle obama. you're going to see cory booker. you're going to see senator warren and of course senator sanders. it's going to be a great night. this kerfuffle will be over. >> there's another cnn poll out. it does show that donald trump got a bump from his convention last week.
4:09 am
a notable one. if you look at the two-way race, donald trump is now at 48%. he was at 42% before last week. hillary clinton has dropped from 49% to 45%. jeff, does this mean -- you know, you heard so many democrats say it was such a dark speech, his vision for the country is overly dark. they felt there was so much chaos. voters responded to it. voters didn't think it was overly dark. i think democrats have to be vigilant. donald trump is a very dangerous candidate. we cannot afford to let him become president of the united states. he'll turn back decades of progress in this country. everybody who's thinking about sitting out or voting for a third-party candidate, you have to get into this race. you have to support hillary clinton. we've got to defeat donald trump if we're going to make any progress going forward. >> the berners are out there. donald trump is reaching out to them saying, i'm your guy. i'm an outsider who wants to attack the status quo just like sanders did. i'm against trade every bit as much and even more than bernie sanders is because i'm for you working-class people who have been forgotten by the fat cats
4:10 am
at the tops of both of these parties. how do you get those people into the clinton camp? >> i think we have to expose donald trump, first of all. it's all phoney bologna. he talks about trade, but he wants to turn trade policy over to corporate raiders. certainly don't need more business people involved in trade. we need more government people who are going to protect the interests of the american people public. so donald trump on trade is a phony. i think the democratic party has been off the rails on trade. i think now they're trying to get back on the rails so we can protect the american workers. >> and i think bernie sanders supporters are smart enough to see exactly what donald trump is doing. he's trying to goad them. they're not -- i mean, he's even trying to -- >> he got a bump in independents in this poll. >> it's a poll after a convention. you're supposed to get a convention bump. he got a six-point bump. jimmy carter had a nine-point bump. neither of them did well in their elections. barack obama -- >> a heck of a keynote speech at
4:11 am
that convention though. >> there was a great keynote speech for sure. >> but i think we have to be vigilant. democrats can n cannot sit on t hands this fall. >> the poll numbers show hillary clinton is still bedeviled by the untrustworthy moniker. 68% of people in this new poll find her to be untrustworthy. >> and that's all you heard last week. >> so what do you do with it? >> we start today. we start to give people the real hillary so people can see what she has done, how consistent she has been through her life. you're going to hear from real people who have been impacted by her, who know her, who can talk about her story, the sort of -- you talk to people all the time who say, if you only knew her one on one f you only see what i see. so those stories are going to come out, and they're coming out starting tonight. >> jeff weaver, governor granholm, great to have you
4:12 am
here. enjoy your convention. notable to say, 68%, that number only ten points less than the is alisyn camerota too sexy, distractingly so number that comes across in all polling. >> he likes the shar truce. >> that's true. i can't spell it, but i like it. "new day" will be live from philadelphia at 5:00 a.m. eastern all the time. the democratic national convention begins at 4:00 p.m. eastern time when the gavel goes off. cnn will be there. >> republican nominee donald trump says he wants to expand his proposed ban on muslims entering the u.s. it will include countries compromised by terror. jason carroll is live in roanoke, virginia, with more on that. hi, jason. >> reporter: good morning to you, alisyn. donald trump is calling his proposal extreme vetting. we'll see if he has more to say about that when he holds his town hall here in virginia,
4:13 am
roanoke, later on today. what is very clear at this point, donald trump not backing down on a number of controversial statements he's made on a number of issues. >> extreme vetting. if a person can't prove what they have to be able to prove, they're not coming into this country. >> reporter: donald trump offering new clarification on his ever-evolving immigration stance, moving away from the blanket muslim ban he proposed this past december. >> calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states. >> reporter: to omitting the word muslim entirely during his speech at the republican national convention. >> we must immediately suspend immigration from any nation that has been compromised by terrorism. >> reporter: trump now insisting he's not pulling back on the ban. >> i actually don't think it's a pullback.
4:14 am
in fact, you could say it's an expansion. people were so upset when i used the word muslim. remember this -- and i'm okay with that because i'm talking territory instead of muslim. >> reporter: the republican nominee even refusing to rule out banning immigration from top u.s. allies, including france and germany and threatening to abandon the world trade organization if it doesn't approve of his plan to tax american goods produced in foreign countries. >> we're going to renegotiate or we're going to pull out. world trade organization is a disaster. >> reporter: ahead of tonight's democratic national convention kickoff, trump attempting a divide and conquer strategy, slamming hillary clinton for naming virginia senator tim kaine as her vp pick. >> what happened with the choice of tim kaine was a slap in the face to bernie sanders and everybody. i was shocked. >> on his worst, worst, worst day, tim kaine is 100 times better than donald trump will ever be. >> reporter: this as prominent trump supporter, retired lieutenant general michael flynn, stirs new controversy for the campaign, retweeting a cnn link to an interview with clinton's campaign manager with an anti-semitic comment
4:15 am
attached. flynn writing, this is what was meant to be retweeted, the earlier retweet was a mistake, my sincerest apologies. this is the latest twitter flub from trump's team with a tweet from trump's own account being called anti-semitic earlier this year, that included what critics say was a star of david. an alisyn, trump doubling down on comments he made about nato when he suggested that he may not come to the aid of nato nations that do not pay their own way, he may not come to their aid. to which senator majority leader mitch mcconnell called those comments basically irresponsible, saying it was a rookie mistake, to which trump said mcconnell is 100% wrong. chris? >> i suspect we're going to hear some concerns. >> all right, jason. thank you very much. we'll follow that part of the story. we'll be back with you in a
4:16 am
little bit. we also have breaking news to update you on. there has been a deadly shooting outside a nightclub in ft. myers, florida. two people have lost their lives. at least a dozen others are wounded. those numbers are early. it's still an active situation. the youngest victim just 12 years old. cnn's boris sanchez is on his way to the scene. he joins us now on the phone. active in terms of the police not knowing exactly what happened yet and how many are involved. we're looking at live pictures right now, boris, of where you're headed. what do you know? >> chris, we actually just pulled up to the scene here, and we're hearing from the club for the first time. they posted a comment on their facebook page a few moments ago kind of explaining the situation. it was apparently a middle school/high school event. no idd.d. was required to get i. you had young children of all ages. apparently the event had just ended and people were pouring out into the parking lot, many young kids calling their parents to go pick them up, when apparently shots rang out. we don't know exactly how many
4:17 am
shots were fired or by whom. we know three people have been deta detained. this isn't the only crime scene. there's another crime scene down the street from here at a home where apparently shots were fired at the house and at a vehicle. one person was injured there. there's another crime scene not far from here at an intersection where one of those three people were detained. from what we understand, officials are still canvassing the area looking for more suspects. as you said, at least a dozen people injured, ages ranging from 12 to 27. still a very active situation. we'll get more information and send it your way soon, chris. >> all right, boris. thanks for making it there. we're showing a live picture right now of all those bullet casings. all those yellow tags is the number of a casing they found so far. we'll stay on that situation. it seems complex, at least. so we'll get back to that as soon as we get more information. let's take a quick break right now. the election has taken a turn. donald trump got a bump after his convention.
4:18 am
the numbers, it's a new race. we're going to show you the state of play, and we're going to get some insight into what hillary clinton needs to do to get the mojo back. senator chris koons joins us next. when heartburn comes creeping up on you. fight back with relief so smooth and fast. tums smoothies starts dissolving the instant it touches your tongue. and neutralizes stomach acid at the source. tum-tum-tum-tum-tums smoothies, only from tums. is the world truly ready for a vehicle that can drive itself? an autonomous-thinking automobile that protects those inside and outside. ready or not, the future is here. the all-new e-class.

the democratic convention begins today here in philadelphia, where chris and i are, but many people are still talking about the leadership shake-up in the party. the dnc's chief resigning after this convention because of these leaked e-mails that showed party officials were biased towards hillary clinton and against bernie sanders. joining us now is delaware senator chris coons. thank you so much for being here. >> great to be here. >> let's talk about these leaked e-mails. before we get to the content, who do you think was behind the hack and leaking them? >> well, i haven't gotten a definitive brief on this yet, but i'm very troubled. i'm concerned with the allegations reported in "the new york times" this morning as well as by hillary clinton's campaign manager that russia was actually behind it, that some of the cyber hackers that are specialists at breaking into american companies and american
4:23 am
military sites actually targeted the dnc. no one's broke into the dnc since watergate and richard nixon. this is a troubling suggestion that the russians are trying to sway this election. >> let's talk about that. that's what hillary clinton's campaign manager suggested, that's why the russians would do this. not just for mischief but because they somehow support donald trump and thinks he supports them. >> i'm struck by the things donald trump has said publicly in recent months, both walking back our commitment to our nato allies and suggesting he genuinely likes vladimir putin. putin, who's under sanctions from the united states and many of our eu allies for invading and occupying a big chunk of ukraine. >> we have some examples of what donald trump has said about vladimir putin. let me play those for our viewers and get you to respond. >> we have russia, which is a real threat too. it's not as big as the soviet union but a real threat, run by a very smart cookie, much smarter, much more cunning than our president. and i like him because he called
4:24 am
me a genius. i respect putin. he's a strong leader, i can tell you that, unlike what we have. we have a pathetic leader. i know russia well. you know what, they want to be friendly with the united states. wouldn't it be nice if we actually got along with somebody. wouldn't it be nice if we actually got along with russia? wouldn't that be good? is that a bad thing? >> senator, what do you hear in these comments? >> i hear someone who's not sophisticated in foreign policy, who isn't paying attention to what's happened in the world in recent years, who doesn't recognize the danger that he poses when he walks back our commitment under the nato treaty to baltic states like latvia, lithuania, estonia, that are right up against the russian border. i'm leading a congressional delegation to ukraine and estonia later this summer where we're going to take a closer look at exactly what the situation is on the ground. i'm concerned donald trump just
4:25 am
isn't ready to be president. >> you're on the foreign relations committee as well. will you be able to figure out if the russians were behind this? >> we'll get a briefing. one of the things i'm excited about this week, this convention, is for the american people to get to know senator tim kaine. he's a terrific, balanced, and capable person, a great husband and father, a progressive catholic, who i think is ready to be president on the first day. i'm thrilled that secretary clinton made him her running mate. >> let's talk about this new cnn poll out just this morning that shows that donald trump did get a notable bump from his convention. six points from where he was before the convention. he's now at 48%. if it's just a two-way matchup, to hillary clinton's 45%. she was hurt by the convention, it looks like, last week. she had 49% before the republican convention. how concerning is this? >> i'm really not surprised by this. historically, conventions give their candidate a bump. that's part of the point of having a four-day nationally televised convention. i'm excited for the american people to tune in the next four
4:26 am
nights as they get to see here in philadelphia what our vision is, the democratic party. i think when folks get done hearing about president obama, vice president biden, first lady michelle obama, and then secretary clinton and senator kaine's vision for the country, she'll get a comparable or bigger bounce coming out of philadelphia. >> but does this suggest that the way that the democrats characterize the republican national convention, it was overly dark, it was hopeless, it was demagoguery, that that's not how voters felt. certainly not respondents to this poll. >> it was dark and it was full of demagoguery and it was frankly troubling. i also think they succeeded in moving folks who had rejected trump and were considering voting for johnson, the libertarian candidate, back into the republican column. >> how did they do that? >> i haven't seen the internals of this, but i think trump's speech the last night cleared the bar for many republicans who had walked away from trump because he's not a conservative. he doesn't share many of the core values of the republican party. you heard what senator cruz did the next to lastight.
4:27 am
he refused to endorse trump. there's a big and deep division within the republican party. even though their convention was full of a lot of foot faults and misstatements and that big fight in the last two nights, i think the in end they brought home some of the base of the republican party. >> in other words, division does work for many voters. >> division may work for voters who don't see a positive alternati alternative. if you're selling fear and concern and division, that can work if there's no positive alternative. what american voters are going to hear this week, particularly out of tim kaine and secretary clinton, is a positive, hopeful alternative about why america is strong, is great, and can be stronger and greater in this century. >> senator chris coons, thank you for being here. all right. the clinton/kaine ticket making its debut. will the dnc e-mail leak hurt party unity as the convention begins? we'll discuss that with our all-star political panel next. yt essays in the entire 8th grade.

russian hack of the democratic national committee's e-mail system. yes, all of these e-mails dumped through wikileaks raising questions about whether or not the dnc was trying, was trying to box out bernie sanders. now the new question is, are the russians trying to influence our election? let's discuss. we have errol lewis, meave reston, and david gregory, cnn political analyst and the host of "the david gregory show" podcast. good to have you all here. you cannot make it up. forget about the document dump right here on the eve of the convention, the first day that paints clinton in exactly the way she doesn't want to be painted. but it was the russians, errol. >> the russians all along, right? some holdouts who want to, i guess, restore the soviet union. this is a headache every which
4:33 am
way. i think what viewers will take away from this is that there's something shady going on. there's something not quite right, and it involves e-mails. sort of a letter perfect way to derail the message -- >> but it's shady two ways. it's shady for the obvious reason, which is how do they feel about bernie sanders, did that communicate itself into the actual process. that doesn't seem to be much proof right now. but the suggestion is there. that's all you need when you have a 68% negative number in the poll on hillary clinton. but the russians, why would they be messing with the election, and who are they doing it for? >> there's no way of knowing. there's no question that if the russians did this, they do want to meddle, they want to create mischief. i think the clinton campaign likes a little bit of a head fake away from the substance of the e-mail when they're accurate to say, oh, look, the russians are doing this. whether they're doing it for trump, what we know about trump, how he's positioned himself is she's been sympathetic. his position vis-a-vis nato is an invitation for putin to
4:34 am
expand his visions of restoring the soviet empire. so all of that stuff is fishy. it's fascinating. none of which detracts from, you know, how impactful the fact is of these e-mails. >> but meave, is it going too far to say the russians would want donald trump as president so they're meddling because he has been, some would say, effusive about talking about putin. he does it a lot. he's been more than sympathetic to him. he's called him a strong leader, much stronger than president obama, and this is the russians saying thank you. >> certainly good fodder for conspiracy theory, for sure. i don't think we know the answer to what the exact motives were here. we certainly need a lot more facts before we can draw those kinds of conclusions, but it brings paul manafort into the mix. >> why? >> he worked for putin's puppet in ukraine. >> so it will just bring attention, you know, back to donald trump's comments about
4:35 am
putin and others. so in some ways, it helps hillary clinton in the sense that she can continue to argue, like, this is someone who's unpredictable and unsteady, and we don't know what he would do with our allies and adversaries. at the same time, i think it's very suspicious that, you know, this blows up and we're no longer talking about the content of wikileaks. >> what bothers you most about the content? what's the harshest indictment in there? >> just the fact it has reinforced everything that bernie sanders supporters felt the whole time, which was that the system was rigged against them, that people within the dnc were working against them, that they were not impartial. just talking to some of those supporters over the last couple days here in philly, none of them were surprised by the content of the e-mails. they said, yes, this is what we were telling you all along. so yes, it will stoke some anger here, and it'll be really interesting to see what bernie sanders does to tamp that down. >> and i think they are trying
4:36 am
to tamp it down. he's been pretty good. what's interesting, you remember back in 2008 when hillary clinton's pollster wrote a memo about how to go after obama to create an otherness about him, a foreignness about him, how he was outside the american experience, and now here it's let's paint sanders because he's not a religious jew, is an atheist, and let's use that in the south against him, just to show if you had any questions, it's not all sweetness and pie in the democratic party. >> people can't pretend to be utterly shocked that folks working for the democratic party have political opinions. to a certain extent, you have to reduce some of this stuff, this dark conspiracy. did they cover their tracks well enough? i don't know. >> but you're right. >> you think they stole the electi election? do you they think hindered him from a voting perspective? >> you can't fight any place where any of these e-mails amount to 3 million votes. >> they didn't do anything they talked about in the e-mails.
4:37 am
>> what's the way the story is playing right now? we were trying to figure it out this morning. everybody thinks it speaks to accident as taken by the dnc that rooked bernie sanders, stole the election from him. >> but there's no evidence. he couldn't get african-americans and hispanics to vote for him in large, you know, democratic settings. >> there was a suggestion in one of them that they should maybe malign his religion, as you were saying. that won't work in west virginia. but there's no evidence that they actually did that, that somebody publicly said he was an atheist. >> these are rather subtle sort of messaging type questions. when they don't want you on the ballot, if the party is working against you, you don't get on the ballot. all of the sudden there's lawsuits. >> tell the rnc that. donald trump went from being that guy with them. now look at him. >> it is rig against people like bernie sanders. as i said earlier, reince priebus, i'm sure, wishes it was more rigged on the republican side. he'd love some super delegates
4:38 am
to stop trump and couldn't get them. that part is true. >> panel, thank you. great to get your insights. thanks for being here. there are some new poll numbers we want to share with you that show donald trump polling ahead of secretary clinton and her trustworthy numbers, as we've been talking about, are worsening. they're quite high. should the clinton campaign be worried? her press secretary joining us live next. the earth needed to find a new waytury, to keep up with the data from over 30 billion connected devices. just 30 billion? a bold group of researchers and computer scientists in silicon valley, had a breakthrough they called... the machine. it changed computing forever. and it's been part of every new technology for the last 250 years. everything? everything! this year, hewlett packard enterprise will preview the machine and accelerate the future. see star trek beyond. and these are the lungs.

cnn will be there. what about this wikileaks? what about these e-mails that suggest the dnc had an animosity towards bernie sanders? is this proof of what he's been complaining about all along? and we have new poll numbers that show the race has changed and there's a number in there for hillary clinton that she's going to have to deal with this week. let's bring in brian fallon, spokesperson for the clinton campaign. it is good to see you. good luck this week. donald trump weighing in on wikileaks, no surprise, but what he is saying might surprise you. put up the tweet, please. wait for it. wait for it. there it is. the new joke in town is that russia leaked the disastrous dnc e-mails, which should never have been written, stupid, because putin likes me. brian fallon shaking his head. you said he's wrong again. how? >> because there's a consensus among experts that it is,
4:43 am
indeed, russia behind this hack of the dnc. a couple months ago when the hack was first reported, it was a former top fbi official, a person that used to run cyber investigations at the fbi, sean henry, that conducted that review and said this is russia behind this. there is this anonymous person who's going out and trying to claim credit, but all the experts say this is the russian government trying to interfere in a u.s. election. >> why do you think they'd do it? what's your theory? >> i think we need to get to the bottom of this. there's signs that the u.s. government is taking this very seriously. agencies in the government meeting last week, according to reports, to assess this threat. i think that there's plenty of evidence for why vladimir putin might want donald trump to win this election. you've seen donald trump go out and express admiration for putin. you've seen him go out and suggest that we pull back from our commitment to our nato allies. just last week at the convention, he suggested we wouldn't honor our commitment to
4:44 am
assist those baltic states under threat from putin. so there's plenty of reason to think there's some kind of affinity there between putin and trump. >> we'll see what the fbi comes up with. intriguing but also distracting from the e-mails themselves. not a good way to start the convention. it seems to prove what bernie sanders and his camp was saying all along. the dnc, it's rigged, they're against me, they're all about hillary clinton. fair? >> two things going on here. number one, the e-mails themselves, can't defend them. what we've seen in terms of religion being thrown out there as something to go after bernie sanders on, completely unacceptable. that official has apologized,. as we learn more, we'll see if further action is necessary. >> will there be proof that hillary clinton was connected to these efforts? >> i don't think so. but there's a distinction to be drawn here between inappropriate e-mails being sent by dnc officials and a rigging of the nomination process. the two things are not the same. you can't equate them. the election process, the nominating process was decided by the voters in the states and by every standard hillary
4:45 am
clinton won a decisive victory if you look at the popular vote, the states won, the pledged delegates, and bernie sanders himself acknowledged she's the rightful winner of this nomination contest. that's why you'll hear from him tonight. >> this is a big night. you've got bernie sanders there. you've got michelle obama. you've got elizabeth warren. that's big. they're no scott baio. but this is you trying to put a big footprint. >> we don't have charles in charge, but we have a powerhouse lineup. >> what are you hoping to achieve? >> i think these people are going to be uniquely qualified to tell a story about how hillary clinton is able to bring the country together. they're going to attest to her integrity and commitment to building a nation that's stronger together. last week at the republican convention, we heard a lot of doom and gloom. we heard a lot of naysaying about the state of the country, yet we heard no solutions. >> but you saw the bounce he got. people are angry and frustrated. trump spoke to that. what was called chaos and doom and gloom resonated. he got a bump, six points. >> there's no doubt there's
4:46 am
anxiety out there, and both campaigns are seeking to address it. but we think we're offering the solutions to help middle class families get ahead. we have the jobs proposals to put our money where our mouth is and get wages rising in this country again. you didn't hear any solutions from donald trump. we're in a period of the race where there's going to be fludty in the polls. both campaigns are going to get a week of pretty unmitigate attention and all eyes on them. you're going to see movement in the polls, but i think donald trump has historically high negatives. he's alienated huge swaths of the electorate. this race is going to be close to the end, but we think we're in prime position to tell a good story about hillary clinton and why she's in this race. >> no question donald trump has his negatives. in this new poll though, hillary clinton 68% not trustworthy. this narrative, this reality that hillary clinton has a problem with the truth, how do you move that number? i've never seen a number that high before. >> well, this was the entire narrative that you heard from the republican convention last week. there were very few speakers that attested to why donald
4:47 am
trump would be a good president. the one unifying idea they had was attacking hillary clinton. we know that this is going to be a continued point that they stress over the next three months. we think the public is craving something more than that. they want an affirmative vision for what you're going to do for them, not just attacking the other person. in the end, i think that the voters are going to decide that hillary clinton is actually the one they can trust to be in their corner and fight for them. i saw in that poll, that cnn poll just out this morning, more voters decided that they were less likely to support donald trump based on last week's convention than more likely to. so i think there's a complicated story to be told in that poll. >> brian fallon, thank you for making the case. appreciate having you on "new day" always. >> thanks. >> so am i pretending you're sitting next to me or pretending you're somewhere completely different? >> pretend i'm sitting here. >> okay, good. sometimes when i toss to you, it's like we're not sitting together. >> this time we are sitting together. he's with her. virginia senator tim kaine making his big debut on the campaign trail with hillary clinton. we have the pros and cons on

the state of the u.s. economy at the convention. but the son of republican nominee, donald trump, is suggesting to cnn's jake tapper that the country's unemployment rate does not reflect the real story. >> these are artificial numbers, jake. these are numbers that are massaged to make the existing economy to look good. when in fact, it is a total disaster. >> donald trump jr., exercised over this issue. let's bring in chief business correspondent, christine romans here at the cnn grill. nobody knows the numbers like christine romans and cnn money now. what do you make of the argument? >> sad to say, looking at these numbers. 9 million jobs have been created in the past four years, jobless rate has dropped from 10% to 4.9% now.
4:53 am
it is not tampered with. it is all very transparent. that headline number, 4.9%, it is the standard, chris. it is the standard economists and presidents of both parties use as an overall measure for joblessness. what is that number. of work, and the people who are out of work and looking for a new job. that by definition is what we're talking about here. the labor market, people looking for work or are working. that employment rate measures people in that labor market. it is all right there. it is all transparent. labor department releases pages and pages. education, race, time spent, unemployed. now, trump has claimed, chris, it is 25%, not 5% or 42%. he has said it really is depression era unemployment. that's just not true. what is true. millions of americans are not even in the labor market any more. that's true. you can see that in this number. this is a labor force
4:54 am
participation rate. it has been moving down. some of this is because of baby boomers. 10,000 of them everyday turn 65. other people are home with their kids. some people are not looking for a job because it costs too much for daycare. some people are on disability, going to college, aren't working. the labor market is very big, chris. but unemployed, the number of people who are unemployed, not everybody out of the labor market is unemployed. you're going to hear these accusations of massaging the numbers. it is not a scandal. it is statistics. >> it is not a scandal. it is statistics. christine roman, buttoning it down. thank you. >> you're welcome. virginia senator tim kaine is now under the microscope. what does the bring to the table, given hillary clinton's sinking numbers in our new cnn national poll. here to discuss, carl bernstein, author of "a woman in charge, the life of hillary clinton."
4:55 am
great to have you here. >> good to be here. >> it is fun for us in the media to talk about the vp pick. we look to go through it all. do voters care? does tim kaine move the needle? >> the candidate can make a difference. kaine brings positives to her campaign, particularly his ability to win virginia, perhaps. which is absolutely necessary. he can go into florida, be helpful there. his background, he is a son of a working class family. he can help in the industrial midwest. and he is very comfortable as a progressive, even though he is more to the center of the democratic party. >> you can call hem a progressi -- him a progressive? >> yes, the dime of the water gate brak break in, i was covering his father-in-law, a great republican progressive governor. and kaine has this in genes.
4:56 am
he believes in racial justice. he has been a jesuit missionary. in the catholic church, great social teaching, et cetera. he is the real deal in terms of walking the walk, doing the work. and standing for good things. the problem is hillary's negatives because of the server. >> have you ever heard of 68% saying that you're not trustworthy? >> no. she has brought most of it on herself because of what she did with the server, which was indefensible, reckless, and might indeed have endangered national security. i'm not one to give candidates advice. but my guess is that there is something anecdotal that i'm picking up, other reporters are, that people might want to see in hillary clinton some measure of contrition about this huge error that she has made of judgment.
4:57 am
and what is not being said by brian fallon or in fact by kaine sitting down with her the other day, there is still push back as if she is the victim of the vast right wing. >> give me -- >> i don't know how you do it. >> that's the trick. >> it is the trick. but my guess is that the american people would be relieved to see hillary clinton do something that indicates introspection, which is somewhat foreign to her, and contrition. but how you do it, i do not know. it is a huge problem, because there is only one issue, which they're right about, you see the president coming here. donald trump's fitness, his unfitness to be the president of the united states, is the single biggest issue in this campaign. she has to get off of her distrust and make that with the president, with mike bloomberg, you're going to see it. you're going to see a unified -- >> that parallels to the wiki leak stuff. the russians hacking e-mails.
4:58 am
>> i don't know that it pails. i doubt that it does. look, watch what trump did in that meeting with his supporters, talking about lee harvey oswald and ted cruz's father. >> ""the national enquirer," they should win a pulitzer." >> it is not just his temperament, it is his stability. there are real questions about his stability. what we saw was a mythological country, described in his speech in which, you know, rapists, terrorists are taking over the country. criminals, murderers, and a mythological donald trump, the myth of trump, the master builder, he has run a company, and actually about 3,000 different companies are incorporated in the structure of
4:59 am
what he runs, that fraud, look at trump university. look at his -- >> that's now how voters see it. all the polls we have out this morning show he did get a bump. >> of course he did. it is a very effective -- >> they responded to him. >> of course they did. he is a demagogue. it is a convention and the job of the press to stay focused on the reality of both these candidates, and what they've done in their lives, in their career, and their records. and we are great at analysis. we are great at debates and covering the horse race and polls. we are not great at going back day after day and looking at their records. and both of them need to be examined that way everyday by all of us up here. >> amen, carl bernstein. amen. thank you very much. appreciate you being here. you make us better. >> thanks, carl. we're following a lot of news this morning. let's get right to it.
5:00 am
saying it loud and proud. i'm with her. >> what i suggested to be true six months ago turns out to be true. the dnc trying to undermine my campaign. >> we're going to get bernie voters. >> you want a trash talking president or bridge building president. >> senator tim kaine is everything that donald trump and mike pence are not. >> the legacy of hillary clinton, death, destruction and weakness. >> in philadelphia, we will offer a very different vision for our country. >>announcer: this is "new day," with chris cuomo and alisyn camerota. good morning, july 25, 8:00 in the east now.

guess where alisyn and i are? philadelphia. democratic national convention begins today. but there is so much news going on about the convention, but also, outside of it. we have these new poll numbers that show what happened after the republican national convention. donald trump didn't just get a bounce. he got a big bounce. you're looking at our new cnn national poll. trump now leads clinton by 3 points in a two-way race. it is a ten point swing since our last poll before the convention. >> this is the biggest post convention bounce since the 2000 election, and it comes as the democrats deal with the controversy over some leaked e-mails from the dnc. also, new questions about whether the russians are behind it, and trying to influence our presidential race. so we have every angle covered.

manu. >> reporter: good morning, that e-mail controversy costing debbie wasserman schultz her job, as chairwoman of the democratic national committee. now, today, debbie wasserman schultz will speak to her florida delegation this morning, and later, to the actual full convention. we'll see just how bernie sanders supporters greet her when she talks in this convention hall. this much is clear. this democratic convention is starting off with quite a bit of drama. >> i'm with her. i'm with her. >> reporter: democratic national chairwoman, debbie wasserman schultz, forced to resign amid a massive e-mail leak, showing dnc staffers favoring hillary clinton over bernie sanders during the democratic primary. more than 1,000 sanders supporters marching in philadelphia in protest. sanders himself, who has been

calling for wasserman schultz resignation for months, telling cnn he is not surprised that the dnc was working against him. >> it is an outrage and sad that would you have people in important positions in the dnc trying to undermine my campaign. >> reporter: clinton's campaign manager pointing his finger at russian hackers, suggesting they had a hand in the leaks. >> experts are saying that they are -- the russians are releasing these e-mails for the purpose of helping donald trump. >> reporter: trump's campaign chairman, flatly denying the suggestion. >> i mean, it's just absurd. i don't know what you're talking about. it's crazy. >> reporter: on capitol hill, debbie wasserman schultz had few defenders. telling senate minority leader was pushing for weeks to replace her, including at one point, floating his number two, dick durbin as a replacement. the interim chair will be donna brazile, al gore's campaign

>> what? >> lazy. >> the account is out there where sfoupposedly trump said i only want certain people counting my money. the counter is, very hard to pin down. that guy never came forward. and when you get to people close around trump, and who have known him, they say he isn't a racist and that you're talking about things that an organization did, many organizations do them. it doesn't make them right. but doesn't make him a racist. your take? >> in any one incident, i think there is ambiguity, but where you have pattern for 45 years in the real estate business and the real estate company that trump headed, then in the casinos, then more recently, you know, we have trump this year twice retweeting a tweet from white

genocide with the nazi party. i think it is fair to provide some leeway, but over 45 years, you simply see this consistent pattern, and i don't know what else to call what emerges, except racism. >> i don't know. nicholas, it is -- i hear you. you did the investigation. you looked back at all the documentation. but it's just hard to know what is in somebody's heart and in somebody's head and to sort of be able to conclude that. but tell us, i mean -- >> so -- >> tell us more about your case. you talked about how he acted in the casino, what did you find more recently. >> let me just address that. there are two elements of racism. what is in people's hearts, whether they believe whether their race is superior to others. and that is very difficult to know. the other element is a systematic tendency to discriminate against people of other races. and i think that is precisely

what emerges in the trump real estate empire, and the casino empire. more recently, as a politician in these episodes. i mean, and then essentially, that goes back to 1989, the central park five where you had blacks and latinos arrested for particularly horrific crime, and eventually exonerated, but at the time, trump purchased full page ads, calling for the death penalty, and helped whip up the crowds that in effect created something of a modern lynching. >> but just to give him his best defense, that's what fairness demands, many people felt that way. that was a case that mischaracterized the facts and led to a prejudicial effect in the system as you and i both know. you have what he said in his speech the other night, where he said these kids and these minority communities, they deserve every right to live out their dreams. does it give you a more clear

picture or cloudy? >> for example, it is true there was a lot of alarm over the central park five case. but the mayor at the time, ed koch, was calling for peace. trump went out of his way to criticize koch's call. when the central park five were exonerated, trump criticized them, and said that they, you know, that they had other sins. and again, i wouldn't make so much of one case, whether it is central park five case, whether it is retweeting these white genocide posts, whether it is real estate, but when you time after time, over 45 years, have somebody who is consistent actions and statements lead to this kind of discrimination, i don't know what else to make of that. >> everybody can read your piece for themselves. it was in the sunday "new york times." thank you for being on "new
