biggest stars trying to deliver the city hillary clinton. how would they handle the wiki discord on day one? first lady michelle obama is getting the best response from last night. pounding on the notion of who her daughters will look up to as president. >> and clinton's one-time rival bernie sanders appealing to his supporters to back hillary clinton declaring she must be our next president. all of this as a dramatic day of turmoil outside and inside the convention hall came to a close. we have all of this covered. let's start with manu raju. inside the convention hall. break it down for us, manu. >> reporter: at 3:00 p.m. yesterday, the sanders campaign reached out to the clinton campaign worried their supporters may disrupt the proceedings here in the convention hall. they discussed tactics and strategy and started to quell the protests. it didn't quite work. people were shouted down.
2:01 am
protests and chants. all temporarily stopped when michelle obama took the stage. >> don't let anyone ever tell you that this country isn't great. >> reporter: michelle obama bringing down the house on night one of the convention. >> this is the greatest country. >> reporter: the first lady leading headlines, including hillary clinton's rival bernie sanders. >> thank you. >> reporter: after a hard-fought primary, sanders welcomed to the stage to cheers in a three-minute standing ovation. before delivering a full-throated endorsement of his former rival in the most important political moment of the night. >> hillary clinton will make an outstanding president and i am proud to stand with her tonight. >> reporter: sanders emphasizing
2:02 am
the stakes of the election. >> if you think you can sit it out, take a moment to think about the supreme court justices that donald trump would nominate. >> reporter: while comforting disappointed supporters, many getting emotional during his remarks. >> we have begun a political revolution to transform america and that revolution, our revolution, continues. >> reporter: the speeches aimed at uniting a party still simmering over the primary fight. the division on display throughout the day both inside and outside the convention hall. as sanders delegates shouted in favor of their nominee. and interrupted speeches wi ees loud clinton boos despite the
2:03 am
calls to quiet the outbursts. and then sarah silverman. >> to the bernie or bust people, you are being ridiculous. >> reporter: the discord quieting as michelle obama took the stage. in this election, i'm with her. >> reporter: the first lady casting the presidential race of the decision of who would create the best future for america's children while delivering resounding praise for her husband's former rival. >> in this election, there is only one person who i trust with that responsibility. only one person who i believe is truly qualified to be president of the united states and that is our friend hillary clinton. >> reporter: mrs. obama choking up while touching on the historical significance of clinton's nomination. >> because of hillary clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters, now take for

lessons she has tried to instill in her daughters. >> we urge them to ignore those who question their father's citizenship or faith. >> reporter: and criticizing trump's rhetoric. >> we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on tv does not represent the true spirit of this country. our motto is when they go low, we go high. >> reporter: now long this peace lasts is really into question. when bill clinton speaks tonight there will be a roll call vote giving sanders supporters a chance to voice concerns over hillary clinton getting the nomination tonight. i'm told the sanders campaign and clinton campaign have merged to quell protests. whether that works, chris and alisyn, is an open question. >> manu, thank you. >> let's question the quelling.
2:06 am
let's begin with what happened last night and if it worked or not. to discuss is host of the david gregory show podcast mr. david gregory. we have juana summers and phil mattingly. who stood out? are the democrats where they need to be going into day two? >> i'm not sure where they need to be. this was a raucous day on day one. i think michelle obama stole the show. it was her night. i don't think anybody was really close. i think she captured a couple of things. framing the choice around who will influence our children. she did it with elegance. she did it with grace and a lot of punch we don't see from a first lady. taking on donald trump about his use of twitter. the fact he led the birther movement. reminding the country without a filter of the media to say this is the guy who doesn't believe the president of the united states was born in america. pointing out how ridiculous that charge is. the totality of the speech
2:07 am
offered a contrast and testimony for hillary clinton's commitment to service that maybe only her husband, the former president, can deliver other than michelle obama. >> michelle obama is getting the attention this morning and it is interesting to contrast it to 2008. conservative media went after her for the statements for the first time in my adult life i'm proud of my country. it took a long time to live that down that she had said that. last night, it was -- i couldn't help but hear echos of that. >> i think the contrast of 2008, not just the remarks, but the primary at large. you think back to the bitter 2008 primary. michelle obama then talking about what she viewed of brutal attacks on her husband. she has given the forceful embrace of hillary clinton and
2:08 am
tied her husband's legacy to hillary clinton and her husband. when she talked about the highe highest glass seeing and talking about what it is like to raise black women in the white house. and it resonated in that room specifically. whether you are a bernie sanders supporter or someone whether has been with hillary clinton the entire time. >> in that room, phil, just to throw cold water on this, i think it speaks to something when the first lady, a non elected, sateals the show the first night. this is supposed to be about bernie sanders. sanders saying something to his people to make them stop the chanting we heard. and they're obvious and understandably upset with the wikileaks. that did not happen last night. that's why we're talking about the first lady. >> i think when you talk to the clinton campaign officials, they were cognizant of what sanders was going to say and they are focused on the roll call vote
2:09 am
today. this were moments during the sanders speech where it doesn't seem like a full-throated embrace. in the end, he seemed to get himself there and make the pitch for. it i think the most common influence yesterday on what occurred was actually michelle obama. if you go in the lead-up to all of the speakers to michelle obama, chanting and booing and segments of the crowd. that stopped cold when michelle obama spoke. i spoke to one official yesterday. the tipping point of the convention or yesterday, possibly the entire convention, may have not been bernie sanders at all. it may have been michelle obama's speech. that becomes the most important moment of michelle obama. >> a couple of things can be true at once. the first lady was able to transcend some of the chaos in the hall and what we saw play out in philadelphia yesterday. someone and you are right, someone to explain the

commitment to service. i do think democrats, first of all, if we are going to scrutinize the republicans for the ted cruz moment. there was not something as bad as that, but there is disunity here. hillary clinton has to be careful of what is bubble in the democratic party. they have to watch it closely before it spills over. >> what does that mean? that is bubbling. what should they do? >> i think hillary clinton has done as much as she can do credited bring. she has moved as far left and still be credible. embracing so much what he stood for. the reality is how noisy the room is. people who felt betrayed by elizabeth warren or the black lives matter. the libertarian candidates could be a destination for the millennial voters who are not convinced with the democratic party. >> the question is what do they
2:11 am
do? the democrats have to figure out who can be their super motivated base to off-set the blue collar wave of passion, anger and enthusiasm that the republicans have moving. who could that group be? >> i think the independents that you see are lifting donald trump to the territory. if you look at the latest cnn polling, donald trump's rise is 43% of independents who are interested in the campaign. those are people who are possible flips for the clinton campaign. there is a question of authenticity here. she cannot move too much further left. she needs to find surrogates. >> what does that group want? the group that's potential to flip from one side to the other? do we know what they want? >> i don't think we have a clear enough picture and we have not done enough studying on what they want. >> this is a new america versus old america.
2:12 am
the coalition of young people and minorities that i think was reflected on the stage last night. they need to turn out in big numbers. i think that is not a given. i don't think you can say that is a given. >> if you want a surrogate to address that, if you talk to the clinton campaign officials, they think the first lady and the president are two that can do that. in ohio, like cincinnati and columbus to turned out and major ways like they did for president obama in 2008 and somewhat shockingly in 2012. those are the surrogates they want to send into those places in the country to try to boost that turnout and keep the coalition. >> north carolina is really interesting. that could become a swing state. nevada as well as colorado. arizona may be a bit of a dream. there are states where the demographics are such and talk about georgia could be a stretch. you could have the president and michelle obama and former
2:13 am
president bill clinton to get out the vote and coalition. this is where the contrast with trump is important. that is where it is fallen a bit for sanders. trump is not acceptable. i don't think all of his supporters are thinking that is enough. >> we want to talk more about bernie sanders. stand by, panel. you just heard some of bernie sanders highly anticipated endorsement of hillary clinton. how did it go over with his supporters? our panel examines that next. my business was built with passion... but i keep it growing by making every dollar count. that's why i have the spark cash card from capital one. with it, i earn unlimited 2% cash back on all of my purchasing. and that unlimited 2% cash back from spark means thousands of dollars each year going back into my business... which adds fuel to my bottom line. what's in your wallet?

united states. >> all right. that is a little taste of bernie's speech. we'll play you more, but let's discuss with the political panel. david gregory, cnn editor juana summers and we have political contributor matt louis. matt, what was your impression from the right side of the aisle of bernie sanders endorsement of hillary clinton. was it enthusiastic enough? >> i think it was as good as sanders could do. to the degree he could tell his supporters to get in line. i think if you are hillary clinton, that is what you want. compare that to the republican convention. republicans are going through a messy divorce right now. the democrats are bickering and fighting, but they get their act together and go out and put on the best front for the sake of the kids, let's get our act together. they have a great show last night.
2:19 am
>> juana, can you take the other side of that? i have seen bernie sanders be more passionate about what's important to him than last night. >> he came out and said without question the evidence shows hillary clinton is the best person to win in november. that said, as i looked through the speech, he didn't talk much about hey, you should go out and vote for hillary clinton. this didn't come off to me as full throated. that is because sanders is in a delicate position. he has to not alienate his supporters and make sure to be an ally to the clinton campaign and dnc to make sure there are no protests or uprisings and from claiming the nomination for hillary clinton. he is in the awkward position of endorsing and standing behind somebody who he spent the last few months talking about inn authentic. >> that's a tough one. how do you think he did? >> i think he was fine.
2:20 am
like he was earlier in the day. this is the real world. we have to fall in line. which is hardly a ringing endorsement. i think he has fallen in line, himself, you know, as a senator who understands he can be powerful in the democratic senate. he can run the budget committee. i don't think his followers are there. i think through a longer arc of disappointments that progressives have had with president obama. single payer health or america's projection of power overseas where he was hawkish over use of drones. as you listen to the party last night, it is not just the progressive wing of the party. it is the progressive core of the democratic party. when hillary clinton is branding herself as a progressive to get things done, i don't think that is in the tradition of who she is. she is more centrist. i think he represents the tepid support for her.
2:21 am
that is something indicative of something larger. some of the noise in the hall is real in terms of some of the disunity. >> i think objectively you have to say it is all real. you used the right word. fine. >> they pulled it together. >> if you move it too much, it reveals a vulnerable skull. that is what elizabeth warren represented. >> last night was a huge trajectory. >> with deference to your perspective on this, that's what you want. i tell you what, there was pushback. we are at the convention. you walk through and you are at the place. you are seeing them. many democrats are saying why are you making wikileaks something that goes beyond the content of the e-mails? you are making it seem like the e-mails say here's what we did to stop bernie. here is what we are going to do to stop bernie. that is not how they felt about it. it was looking better for them
2:22 am
going into it. outwardly, it brought up the stink that everyone is thinking on the floor. that is why warren was important. she, too, last night, didn't seem like she rose to the occasion. it seemed like more of the same old, same old. listen. >> last week, donald trump spoke for more than an hour on the biggest stage he's ever had. other than talking about building a stupid wall, which will never get built. other than that wall, did you hear any actual ideas? did you hear one solid proposal from trump for increasing incomes or improving your kids' education or creating even one single good paying job? look, let's face it, donald trump has no real plans.
2:23 am
>> the truest thing she said there, david, is that the wall ain't getting built if congress doesn't want it built. how effective is that? >> it is a stupid wall. i have not run across anybody who thinks a wall is a good idea. i was just thinking, she wasn't as strong as she could have been. she played it just right. she has a lot of detractors. nobody is better at dropping the hammer on donald trump than she is. this is a political rally per se. i thought she moderated her tone well. she is the most progressive supporter for hillary clinton. more important than bernie sanders. >> why? >> i think her support is deeper and wider than sanders is among progressives. i think she can offer better testimony for hillary clinton than he can or even is willing to do. i thought she played that pretty
2:24 am
well. >> let's talk about that. you have elizabeth warren and michelle obama and you have bernie sanders. even if they are not as giving as enthusiastic speech as we heard before, where else do they go? they have to work around to her. >> that's the toughest part. they have to find their way to get to her with whether or not they vote for gary johnson or jill stein. the odds of them winning are slim. that is political reality. the odds i heard from supporters i talked to they resent the fact they feel they are being told to be obligated to vote for hillary clinton. they feel their vote needs to be earned. despite the testimonies that we heard from popular and powerful democrats, they don't feel like she earned it yet. >> a lot of the chatter, the sanders people are still holding signs and wearing their stuff and hanging out together. >> they are wearing stuff if they are wearing clothes.
2:25 am
>> you were hanging out in a different place. >> i was walking up to the hotel and i felt they could wear more clothes. it was after dinner. >> of course it was. the idea of a progressive finding their way to as juana correctly describes it, that is not a good formula for a passion voter for a progressive. the blue collar vote you are cultivating on the republican side. they have to want it in a big way, right, matt? >> yeah. i think both parties have this problem. we talk about the left versus the right. really right now, we are defined by the insiders and outsiders. i think donald trump could have done a better job of woos and courting bernie sanders. he says good things and he is schizophrenic and he says that. >> calling bernie sanders pathetic is a mistake.
2:26 am
>> he needs to woo them. >> panel, thank you. we will rely on you throughout the program. >> another big name last night that was certainly supposed to help with the group we are outlining so important to the democrats was new jersey senator cory booker. he was very passionate. we will talk to him about what i thinks is the key to unifying his party and what's his best case for clinton. >> opening night at the democratic convention. one speaker after another did target donald trump. were their attacks on him effective? we will take that question on with the panel next. oh, look... ...another anti-wrinkle cream in no hurry to make anything happen. neutrogena® rapid wrinkle repair works... ...in one week.

speech that was not authentic. this is what we heard for a year. how many times did we hear him sound like that? he had to give an authentic speech. he was very sad. his supporters were crying on the floor. he had to own that moment. he had to let his supporters have that moment. >> i didn't buy it. i love's bernie's message. it was not an endorsement of hillary clinton, but an extension of his campaign. it wasn't ted cruz. at no moment did he feel like he supported hillary. >> by the end, you knew. >> it felt perfunctory. >> there was more plagiarizing of his speech than melania trump. >> which is impossible. >> you cannot plagiarize yourself. how can you plagiarize yourself?

>> you take an old book you wrote and take the text and put it in a new one and don't cite. >> it is? >> auto plagiarizing. >> so bernie should go down. >> the challenge for the democrats and we have to see how it develops this week. we know because of the convention and because of a very direct line argument from trump, whom they are speaking to. he called them the forgotten. 1968, we heard from nixon. the silent majority without actually creating that term. who do you think the democrats are speaking to? who is their base that they need to come out strong in a way that could determine the election? >> they need minority voters to turn out in 2008 numbers. what they did was push the party to the left. this is not bill clinton's democratic party. you heard bernie sanders and his speech talk about how he moved the party on trade and moved the party on other issues in the platform.

that is his big victory. pushing the party to left. >> we will hear from mike bloomberg. another leftist. he will, you know, push us exactly where we want to be, i think. and bill clinton, another leftist and progressive. listen, i think we as democrats right now are exactly where we want to be after the first night. >> moving to the center. that's what i'm saying. >> we're a party of a coalition. you saw the coalition last night. >> you certainly are seeing them. you have a lot of different groups that are melding together. it was one day of the convention. fellows, thank you very much. i appreciate it. auto plagiarizing. much more ahead on the dnc's big night. michelle obama is getting the headlines. why? what did she do that the man on the other part of your screen, bernie sanders, did not? we will break it all down for you next. ng your beauty sld use new aveeno®
