u.s. and around the world. it is thursday, july 28th. it is "new day." chris and i are at the democratic national convention in philadelphia. it has been a week for democrats. a night steeped in symbolism and history. president obama says he is ready to pass the baton, to hillary clinton. he is embracing his one-time rival and a case for her to make history. >> he first used the baton to beat donald trump over the head. the pounding by the big dogs. hope versus fear. ready versus reckless and president obama explaining why hillary in the arena made the difference. let's start the discussion with michelle kosinski still inside the convention hall. michelle. >> reporter: chris, it is interesting to see how it was all put together.

it started with the video presentation of president obama's accomplishments in the voices of people closest to him, but it was also about presidential temperament. what the job requires. the tough decisions involved. you see president obama come out and the look on his face. this is the last time he will have an audience like this while he is president. it was emotional. you could see the work that went into this. weeks of writing. six drafts. going after trump and over what is america versus what is not. you could almost see the weight of this moment. and of america's voice on president obama's face as he tried to connect past with present with future. >> while this nation has been tested by war and it has been tested by recession and all matter of challenges, i stand

before you again tonight after almost two terms as your president to tell you i am more optimistic about the future of america. >> reporter: optimism, the focus in the speech the president delivered with an almost constant smile as he ripped into republicans with a stark contrast. >> what we heard in cleveland last week wasn't particular republican. it sure wasn't conservative. what we heard was a deeply pessimistic vision of a country where we turn away from the rest of the world. there were no serious solutions to pressing problems. just the fanning of resentment and blame and anger and hate. and that is not the america i know. the america i know is full of

courage and optimism and ingenuity. the america i know is decent and generous. >> reporter: this time, president obama didn't hold back. yes, saying the name. >> and then there's donald trump. don't boo. vote. the donald is not really a plans guy. he's not really a facts guy, either. the choice isn't even close. there has never been a man or a woman. not me, not bill, nobody more qualified than hillary clinton to serve as president of the united states of america. we're not a fragile people. we're not a frightful people. our power doesn't come from some self declared savior promising he alone can restore order as long as we do things his way. we don't look to be ruled.

chelsea. alisyn and chris. >> all right. so those were the words. let's see how they landed and discuss with our panel. cnn political analyst and host of the david gregory show podcast. david gregory. mark preston and juana summers. i cannot get through the introductions fast enough. we're through the titles. a lot of language last night. a lot of symbolism last night. what do you think helped hillary clinton and what do you think hurt donald trump? >> i think the political choreography was excellent. the first few nights were excellent. you have huge figures in the political landscape and democratic party were able to offer a testimony for hillary clinton and do something extraordinarily difficult for her. to give her a shot at least of a new introduction to the american people. that was particularly helpful. i think a lot of slashing at donald trump and kind of

substantive ways -- there's the risk element and the dark pessimistic element and the idea he doesn't know his stuff. whether it is on foreign policy or other areas. you know, i think those were the themes they hammered over and over. there is consistency. >> mark? >> i think michael bloomberg's speech was overshadowed by the speech by president obama. joe biden electrified that crowd. if there was ever a politician made for conventions, it is joe biden. he lit up the crowd. what i think is is that michael bloomberg wasn't speaking to that audience. i think michael bloomberg was speaking to the millions of people watching on tv. specifically the independents. he said i'm not a democrat. i don't believe with everything hillary clinton does but she is the right person at this time. effectively, i think that can be powerful. i think for her going into

tonight, the expectations are so high. there have been pretty good nights out of this. she is not the great orator. >> right. president obama, for obvious reasons, he does not speak out of rhythm. joe biden can go on a flourish. that is not what president obama does. he is exacting and precise. one, he used the metaphor of being in the arena versus a timid soul on the outside in terms of why he liked hillary clinton and then he said the line about americans don't seek to be ruled. i want to play that and get your take on it, juana. >> the donald is not really a plans guy. he's not really a facts guy, either. our power doesn't come from some self declared savior promising he alone can restore order as long as we do things his way. we don't look to be ruled.

that's why anyone who threatens our values, facist or jihadist or home-grown demagogues will always fail in the end. >> i am told this was important to say for president obama. why do you think this hits for him? >> chris, i think this was one of the best lines of the speech. it points to the theme that obama hit. this is an exceptional country. of greatness and richness. that is the view president obama portrayed. after being in cleveland, it is a sharp contrast from donald trump and other republicans. this is a very unifying speech from president obama. he is widely popular. not just from democrats who support hillary clinton. in the arena, you talked about it. it was really powerful. he is saying this is our fight. mine and hillary clinton. she is on your side. he is encouraging democrats who have gone along with the clinton campaign to come along with her on this journey and back her.

that is important as hillary clinton goes into a really big night for her campaign to win over democrats who have not backed her yet. >> if you think about the larger theme. it is bigger than one person. it is not just about the notion of donald trump i alone can fix all these problems. democracy requires a lot of we in the citizenry to affect real change. in some ways, this is the way to capture hillary clinton in the democratic movement to say look, this is my legacy. this is the potential third term. i don't think there is any question of passing the baton. you will hear it from her. she is doubling down on the third obama term. >> president obama said there is never a person more qualified. not me. not bill. was that a nod or return of the favor from 2012 when bill clinton said not even i could have gotten us out of a recession this well.

>> nice payback, isn't it? >> doesn't it echo of that? >> he was absolutely right. if you are only going to go by the resume and what they have done their lives. bill clinton, barack obama and many other presidents do not have the resume she has. that's the bottom line. he was trying to humanize her and play the competency card against donald trump. >> juana, he didn't look like he was ready to leave the stage when he finished the speech. i don't mean it in a perjority way. >> i think a lot of supporters in the room from the intense city of emotion were not ready for barack obama. >> you kept hearing four more

donald trump igniting another political firestorm. this time he is challenging russia to find hillary clinton's missing e-mails. his critics call it an act of treason. we have elise labbot live in washington. what is the latest?

donald trump doing the democrats a favor yesterday. getting steeped in controversy after calling on russian hackers to find hillary clinton's missing e-mails. cnn has done it's own investigation into trump's hiring practices. uncovering a different picture than the one he touts. let's discuss this with christine quinn. a supporter of hillary clinton. and john phillips. he is a supporter of trump. let's let people decide for themselves what he said and what it means.

here is trump. here is what he said about the russian e-mail hackers and hillary clinton's e-mails. >> i will tell you this, russia, if you are listening, i hope you are able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. i think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. let's see if that happens. >> john, at the high side, you have people, politically motivated saying this is treason. on the low side, you have this was just a dumb thing to say for someone who wants to be president. where are you? >> i think it is impulsive. this is the campaign season of hijacked story lines. you had the republican convention and the first night was hijacked by melania scandal. then ted cruz hijack the convention with him not endorsing trump. you had debbie wasserman schultz on day one of the democratic convention.

you had him trying to shift the story line from what president obama was going to do and focus on the e-mails? >> what is your take? >> my advice is to stop the russian international screwing with e-mails and leave it to yakov smirnoff. >> what we heard was impulsive. it may have been. it may have just popped into his head in mar-a-lago. he did not say yesterday what they are now trying to say what he said. if you have them, give them to the fbi. you played the clip. we don't hear those words. he urged russia. not one of our present day allies at all.

a country led by a dictator, to go and hack more and find e-mails. it is outrageous. not everything is about opponents against each other. not everything is about winning or who is fired or not fired. some things are bigger issues about protecting america. i saw that yesterday. it was practically treason in my mind. people worked a lifetime to end the cold war. he already said he thinks putin has good leadership skills. urging him to use them to hack our government. >> we always have that discussion about trump. this issue, russia, what he just said. whether or not they did this hacking to help him. the main guy in his organization has a really dark tie to kovich and russian oligarchs.

and then you adopt a position that none of you are talking about. backing off being aggressive to help ukraine and its fight against russia. does it bother you this nexus, this coincidence of factors? >> it is a pretty strong hat trick. >> if you go back to 2012, mitt romney said russia was our enemy. >> nobody goes after russia the way the gop does. they have been strong. john mccain will talk about putin all day as one of the worst people he met in his life. >> he was mocked in 2012 for doing that. >> i'm saying the party platform. manafort's ties. does this concern you? >> i think trump sees himself as being like an fdr. when fdr saw stahlin as a power player. it did not happen. i think trump sees himself in that mold.

i think that is a mistake. >> i should dudder at the compa to fdr. it is too early in the morning to think about that. i think we really need to see this connection that chris brought out. the platform matters. to say you are going to back off protecting ukraine sends a terrifying message to that party of the world and you couple that with the statements on nato and he will check the balance sheet before he helps people. >> okay. let's switch gears. there is a cnn investigation we want to get to. drew griffin led the investigation. they looked into donald trump's hiring practices. he made a big point i'll bring jobs back to american workers. in his businesses, he has not always done that. in the past 15 years, cnn found he hired 1,338 workers as

waitresses and cooks at mar-a-lago and his golf clubs. you don't need foreign workers for that. he specialized in attractive women from south africa or romania, the investigation found. so he doesn't exactly walk the walk, john, when it comes to only hiring american workers. >> his argument is he knows the rules and exploited the rules. >> it is legal. >> the same argument the democrats use on campaign finance reform. al gore is with the buddhist monks. he said you have to play under the existing rules. >> hypocracy on both sides. >> donald trump is saying he is a guy uniquely qualified to stop

commander in chief and leadership. what i thought was striking, there was more optimism in the first minute of his speech than you saw the entire time in cleveland. >> there is the juxtaposition that we talk about. that is where are the american people? if you take their temperature, are they optimistic or fearful and pessimistic? which message is going to work with him? that is an open question today. >> you heard him say this last night. the america that he knows, the america he is seeing over the last seven plus year in the oval is a country of optimism. people are struggling. as he said, we have not made it all the way there, but this is a optimistic country. this is not a country that you saw in cleveland with all the hate and all the fear. he played to the best of the american people. >> you have been on both campaigns. hillary clinton's now and president obama's in 2012. what is the difference? >> it is a different year.

in terms of the campaign, themselves? >> the message, the campaign, the mood. you are on the frontlines. what has changed in four years? >> from what we have seen from the time that obama came in 2008 and 2012 election until the 2016 election is that you have seen a lot of progress over the last eight years. as the campaign has getting a run of the same battle ground states and virtually the same map. she learned a lot from the 2008 campaign. she has incredible staff and volunteers. they have taken the lessons that we found from the 2008 and 2012 campaigns and taken them to the next level. >> such as? >> they have an incredible field operation that is integrated with digital in ways we did not get to in 2012. if i come online and on twitter or facebook talking about hillary clinton, i'm getting hit up by the organizer to come into the office in a way we never got

to in 2012. the campaign is sophisticated. >> i don't have to tell you that hillary clinton struggles with the trust issue. what will she say? >> she will talk about the leadership. this is a woman as barack obama said who is more qualified than anybody. himself or bill clinton, to be commander in chief. just as we have seen this week as people have talked about as a mother and grandmother. and who she will be as a leader. >> do you think that her surrogates out speaking at the democratic national convention have addressed that in as head-on a way as they need to? >> i think they have. i thought last night was the best night of any party convention in the last couple decades. because they made the case for the future of the country which is what people want to know. where are we going and how will she take us there? they made a case as the person ready to be commander in chief. they contrasted that to donald

trump who is not fit. >> here is what the trump campaign statement put out in response. he is saying this about the democrats. they offered no solutions for the problems facing america. they described a vision of america that doesn't exist for americans. 70% of americans think our country is on the wrong track. what is your response? >> that is typical trump campaign. there was not one single policy solution presented in donald trump's speech last week. not one. he said we want good trade deals. not bad. no details. on issue after issue, he offered no solutions at all. what you heard last night were solutions. you heard the commander in chief who fought for the american people and seen the economy move forward. you will see more of that tonight. which is a vision and details. you did not see in cleveland. >> jeremy bird, thank you for being here. up next, more on the big speeches from last night by
