[ cheers and applause ] i will -- i will gladly lend you my copy. you have sacrificed nothing and no one. >> reporter: a defining moment at the democratic national convention, now sending shock waves through donald trump's presidential campaign.

>> i think i made a lot of sacrifices. i work very, vsh hard. i've created thousands and thousands of jobs. >> reporter: trump criticizing this muslim mother and father of a u.s. soldier killed in iraq. >> his wife, if you look at his wife, she was standing there. she had nothing to say. she probably -- maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. you tell me. >> reporter: khizr khan, whose son was killed in 2004, firing back at trump. >> for this candidate for presidency to not be aware of the respect of a gold-star mother standing there, and he had to take that shot at her, this is height of ignorance. he is a black soul, and this is totally unfit for the leadership of this beautiful country. >> reporter: his wife also speaking out in a "washington post" op-ed saying, quote, walking on to the convention stage with a huge picture of my

son behind me, i could hardly control myself. what mother could? donald trump has children whom he loves. does he really need to wonder why i did not speak? trump attempting to clarify his remarks in a statement, calling khan's son, quote, a hero, but also stating khan had no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim i have never read the constitution, which is false. khan defending his scathing rebuke of trump, saying he wrote his own speech. >> there is no clinton campaign here. there is no prompter here. i am articulate person. >> reporter: adding that trump is missing two qualities required in a president. >> that is moral compass and second is empathy. this candidate is void of both traits that are necessary for the stewardship of this country. i do not believe his whole

year-long rhetoric, division, excludeing people, talking about them derogatorily, has prepared him. >> reporter: late sunday, trump's running mate, indiana governor mike pence, issuing his own statement. quote, the family, like all gold-star families, should be cherished by every american, all as top republicans are distancing themselves from trump's remarks a s and praisin captain khan as a hero. mccain's daughter tweeting this over the weekend. i would ask what kind of barbarian would attack the parents of a fallen soldier, but oh, yeah, it's the same person who attacks p.o.w.s. >> he has throughout the course of his campaign consistently insulted and demeaned

individuals, groups of americans. >> reporter: now, there were condemnations throughout the day yesterday. one thing there was not, people pulling their endorsement from donald trump. it's something democrats have seized on. senate minority leader harry reid calling republicans spineless. i was talking to republican officials throughout the day yesterday. a couple of whom said the basic goal here, weather the storm, hope this position doesn't become increasingly more untenable as the week goes on. as one pointed out, john, this is something we've dealt with before on some level over and over throughout this campaign. we seem to move on from it. the question now, is this a bridge too far? >> all right, phil pmattingly, how many days indeed. let's discuss the fire storm. gentlemen, let me read you a statement we just got in from some gold-star family members

who just wrote a letter to donald trump expressing their concern with his words. listen to this. we are all gold-star families who have lost those we love the most in war. ours is a sacrifice you will never know. ours is a sacrifice we would never want you to know. your recent comments regarding the khan family were repugnant and personally offensive to us. when you question a mother's pain by implying her religion, not her grief, kept her from addressing an arena of people, you're attacking us. when you say your job building buildings is akin to our sacrifice, you're attacking our sacrifice. your response? >> my response to this is, from the beginning, no question about the supreme sacrifice of captain khan and the donald trump has said several times that he acknowledges sacrifice. but criticizing somebody's death, that was not appropriate, and this is not a class. his father looked like a politician. attacking him in front of

millions of people that he hasn't read the constitution. it was unnecessary. this was done by the dnc. i think it's not fair to the gold families at the same time. a lot of sacrifice of sons and daughters have fought and gave their life. i believe donald trump is fighting for the same cause that captain khan has lost his life, fighting terrorism, fighting isis, and that's what it is. >> the khan family says, you know, they were not speaking the words of hillary clinton, they were not speaking the words of the dnc, they were speaking the words from their heart. should they not be allowed to express their opinion? >> his father was on the dnc standing and bashing and taking the copy of the constitution like a politician. i think either he has a political motivation in the future or something, but it was not fair. >> well, i think there's different responses to when people are bullied. some people try to appease the bully. other people stand in solidarity of the bully. it has nothing to do with

muslims, with radical itz lasla. this is classic trump. if it's really about the things trump is saying it is, what do we do with trump's comments on lgbt, jews, women, veterans, even our allies abroad? if we follow this logic, we're saying it's legitimate when trump goes after a judge of mexican origin, by saying he can't be impartial. he said this last year, that mexicans in the united states, they're mostly drug dealers, rapists, murderers. this is classic trump. he behaves in the manner of a 5-year-old when he's presented with any kind of criticism. and he's running for president. he has to know how to deal with criticism. he's a grown-up, ostensibly. he immediately makes it a personal attack. a gold-star family has every right to speak to politics. what just happened? they put their own family member on the line. they lost a son. how can you possibly say that they're not allowed to talk about politics or policy?

they're allowed to sacrifice a family member but not to comment on that sacrifice? that makes absolutely no sense to me. >> a lot of people are saying that even if donald trump had an issue with the politics of this, even if donald trump felt attacked from the dnc stage by this family, the way he dealt with it, the empathy or lack of empathy, critics say he showed, is revealing, in particular they say that he should not have brought up the wife, who during the dnc speech did not speak. is she fair game to attack as donald trump -- or question as donald trump did? >> my answer to this question is donald trump, since he started his candidacy, there's a war going on, especially from the liberal media. everything they're twisting. they're not picking up whatever he's saying, especially like he's said he's going to build a wall for people coming in illegally. he'll ban the muslims with exceptions.

but the thing here -- >> hang on. how is he twisting? he talks about the wife. if you look at his wife, she was standing there. she had nothing to say. she probably maybe wasn't allowed to have anything to say. you tell me. plenty of people have written that. she was extremely quiet and looked like she had nothing to say. i'm not twisting his words. i'm reading his words. >> frankly speaking, what you think is an assumption. she didn't say a single thing. he's not lying. maybe she was not allowed. >> let's play some video of this right now. >> i will gladly lend you my copy. appropriate for donald trump to question the silence of a grieving mother? why is it acceptable? >> you know, that was a legitimate question. why she didn't say a single word. she's a mother, one of the parents. later on they said she had a medical condition. that's weird why they brought her on the stage to begin with. it was just a drama. it was like a typical dnc like they're living in alice and wonderland. it's all fiction they wanted to create. they're disrespecting all the gold families and the people who have lost their lives defending this country and freedom. >> a lot of people think the through the looking glass right now when talking about donald trump questioning this woman who stood there in silence. is that fair game? >> first, you can't have your cake and eat it too. you can't say it's inappropriate for gold-star families to make

political statements and ask why she didn't make a political statement. that's deeply inconsistent. the second is, why are we having this conversation? why is this man a nominee? he's clearly a deeply immoral human being. i mean, he's insulted everyone. he started this a year ago by going after john mccain. what kind of person wants to be president of the united states and insults a prisoner of war? when faced with criticism from a gold-star family goes after a grieving mother. that tells you everything you need to know. thirdly, this is about a lot more. the rnc and dnc, compare the two conventions. the dnc has kareem abdul jabbar introducing the khan family. donald trump is not really concerned with national security, with radical islam. he has a vision of america that is profoundly at odds with what we believe america is supposed to be. >> when he says he doesn't read

the constitution, doesn't that open him up to a debate or a dialogue with the candidate? >> sure, he does. but why go after the mother? if you want to have a conversation, prove to me that a religious ban on 1.6 billion muslims is consistent with the constitution. show me the connection between those two things and i'm happy to have that conversation. trump doesn't want to have that conversation. it's the same thing he did when he said a judge of a mexican origin can't be impartial. he goes after race. he goes after ethnicity. he goes after gender because he behaves like a 5-year-old. he's not fit for office. >> we got to go. thanks so much for being here. i do appreciate it. coming up next, we're going to speak exclusively in our next hour with the khans. they will both join us in an interview that you do not want to miss. >> this will be the first time we hear directly from ghazala khan after she wrote that op-ed in "the washington post." also ahead here, did donald trump cross a line with the his war of words with the khan family? is it a line that will cost him

welcome back to "new day." the fallout growing this morning on donald trump's attacks on the parents of a u.s. muslim soldier who spoke out against him at the democratic convention. >> if you look at his wife, she was standing there, she had nothing to say. maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. you tell me. but plenty of people have written that. she was extremely quiet and looked like she had nothing to say. a lot of people have said that. i've made a lot of sacrifices. i work very, very hard. i've created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs. built great structures. i've done -- i've had tremendous success. >> the bipartisan backlash

picking up steam, and donald trump is digging in. he's not apologizing. let's discuss it all with our political panel, cnn political commentator and political anchor of time warner cable news errol louis is with us. cnn political analyst and national reporter for "the new york times," alex burns, is with us. and cnn political analyst and host of the david gregory show podcast, david gregory. gentlemen, thank you for being here. where do we begin? so much to go through. errol, to you. i think the real question is, is it any different this time? is this going to cost him votes? a week ago he was beating clinton in the polls at 44% to 39%. you say yes. you say it's different this time, and this is going to hurt him with pro-military republicans. why is it different? >> it could. first of all, it's different because after the convention speeches are done, and it's not the entire convention, it's really the speeches that make the difference and have proven to sort of move the needle when it comes to a convention bounce. that's over. we have at this point under a

hundred days. every news cycle is precious. people are tuning in now and starting to make up their minds in big, big numbers. we have the debates. we have only a couple of different ways that you can really start moving large numbers of people. this could be a problem. i think also if you think back to the philadelphia convention, the democrats hammered on the theme of trying to pry apart the republican party, trying to find who is persuadable, giving them permission, giving them an opportunity and an argument to step away from their candidate. that's what the michael bloomberg speech was about. that's what much of the convention was really aimed at. so this feeds right into that. >> on cue, republican jeb bush, no donald trump fan, but nevertheless a republican, he tweeted this yesterday in response to what donald trump was doing. he said, this is so incredibly disrespect to a family that endured the ultimate sacrifice of our country. david gregory, i want to ask you something unusual. i want to the try to explain to people what's different about how donald trump has chosen to respond to this family.

you covered george w. bush in the white house. george w. bush faced a lot of criticism from gold-star families, from mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers who had lost loved ones in iraq. he responded differently than donald trump did. >> well, to never go after the families, to treat them as sacred and to understand their pain, to respect, to elevate, honor their pain and then make a pivot. you know, donald trump in his tweet said later on after his initial comments, which is a pattern for him, look, their son is a hero, we're talking about radical islam and the dangers from that. but to go after the mother in that way is what i think so many people criticized. and it's not just the offensiveness of that particular action. again, there's mike pence, the running mate, issuing a statement, distancing himself from what the top of the ticket has done. but it's also wasted opportunity, john. if you look, you know, republicans worry about the fact that trump will sabotage

himself. he really could have been spending the last few days talking about very slow economic growth. he could have talked about the clinton economic policies, wanting to raise taxes on the wealthy. these kinds of things that could not only unite the republican party but reach out to independent, undecided voters of which there's a large chunk in this election. so there's a lack of discipline and self-sabotage that i think is really something that we'll be watching for closely. >> so let's talk about that, gentlemen, by comparing how trump responded with how hillary clinton responded when chris wallace pressed her on pat smith, the mother of sean smith, who died in benghazi, in saying my son died because of your actions. so let's play the two reactions of the candidates side by side. >> my heart goes out to both of them. losing a child under any circumstances, especially in this case, i understand the grief and the incredible sense of loss that can motivate that. >> he doesn't know that.

i saw him. he was, you know, very emotional and probably looked like a nice guy to me. his wife, if you look at his wife, she was standing there. she had nothing to say. she probably -- maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. >> so david, alex brings up this issue of lack of discipline. when you talk about whether or not you think this gives weight to clinton's argument that donald trump have the temperament to be commander in chief. does this help her on that front? >> it certainly does. you saw both hillary clinton and tim kaine and bill clinton yesterday sort of jump in really quickly to try to make this a part of a larger story about trump. bill clinton raising on saturday how this reminds him of what donald trump said about john mccain all those months ago. that's the kind of thing that bothered military families, military veterans a great deal at the time and sort of bringing that up, reopening that wound is sort of greatly politically advantageous for clinton right now. i would add, poppy, a big difference between the issue that clinton is defending

herself on there and the issue trump is defending himself on, the issue of benghazi has sort of been litigated round and round in this election to no one's obvious advantage. trump is being forced, really, to defend his proposal to ban muslim immigration into the united states. he's tried to get away from that idea. it was very popular in the primaries, very unpopular with general election voters. this just sucks him right back in to an issue where he probably cannot campaign on it for the next three months and come out ahead. >> an issue that will undoubtedly come up in the debates, if there are debates, right. because lately over the last three days, donald trump has been criticizing the debate commission, saying that the debates are scheduled against nfl football games. what's going on here? >> i think he's just trying to game it a little bit. this always happens. apparently this happened in 2012. i don't know because if there's a choice between an nfl game and a political debate, i think we all know what you're watching. but i think he's going to push

it a little bit, maybe try to create a little wiggle room. either he gets them changed somehow, in which case he can claim to be a great negotiator, or he doesn't get them change and can say the system is rigged. either way, he's going to try to make a little hay out of it. while we're talking about that, we're not talking about crimea, this flap with the gold-star mother. >> 20 seconds, alex. >> the risk he opens himself up to, he wants a debate many people are going to see, what if at some point hillary clinton says, let's do ten debates, let's do them right now. how does he get out of it then. >> the concern is i think it's a legitimate point. i don't know why you'd want to have a debate against football. there's an a lot of his potential voters who would be watching football over the debates. depending on his debate performance, he may want that. i certainly think it's part of the gamesmanship of the system. if you're the clinton team, you want these debates, you know, in october to really show where he has huge deficits on the issues. >> gentlemen, thank you all. appreciate it. >> a deadly weekend in the suburbs of baltimore. just incredible flooding there

trump's policies and statements about muslims, saying the businessman has sacrificed nothing and no one and questioned if trump had even read the u.s. constitution. joining us now again is a senior fellow and director of development at the center on global policy and a senior correspondent at religiondispatches.org. i guess i just want to start with you and get your general sense of this moment that we're in right now because this is highly unusual. we have a presidential candidate in this ongoing war of words now with gold-star parents who happen to be muslim-americans. >> yeah, well, first of all, i want to thank the khan family for their extraordinary bravery and sacrifice. i mean, i can't just begin to

imagine the courage it takes, frankly, to stand before millions of people while you're grieving the loss of your son who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. mr. trump's attacks on the khan family, a gold-star family, is frankly beyond the limits of human decency and really is a new low in this election campaign. unfortunately, it's also part of a disturbing pattern for him. just a year ago he attacks senator john mccain, a war hero and a former prisoner of war, because he basically said he doesn't care for people who are captured. he doesn't think they're war heroes. so this is really testing the limits of human decency in our country. i think it's really time for mr. trump to do the honorable and the decent thing. he should first of all apologize and genuinely apologize to the khan family and all gold-star families.

i also think he needs to make a commitment to just stop. stop with the sewing of hate and division and to start to begin to bring americans together, not tear us apart. >> just to be clear, the three of you are all trump critics. i want to make sure the trump side of this is presented. miguel, when frahana says donald trump attacked the khans and that donald trump should apologize, what specifically are the attacks being referred to here, and what should he apologize for, miguel? >> well, you know, i give credit to the fact that he did call captain khan a hero. so thank god for that because i don't think he called john mccain a hero. he properly did recognize that captain khan is a hero. it seems like the attack was actually more on captain khan's mothe mother. i would have loved if she had spoken, but i can completely understand why. it was becoming clear she just

can't handle talking about her son at this time, and that's perfectly understandable. i will say on this panel, as we congregate within the american-muslim community, it's so great to see frahana here. she's such an accomplished woman within the muslim community with her work in the u.s. senate you should the guidance of senator feingold. to me, she really represents what you will see amongst muslim women here in america, women who aren't wearing a veil, who are very outspoken. look, i think i need to get permission from her in order for me to speak. so i'm just grateful that frahana is here, and i'm looking forward to more muslim women coming out. in a weird way, i think this is the best thing that could happen to the american-muslim community. i think if trump is going to apologize, it should be directly to mrs. khan, but i'm excited this dialogue is happening. i just think the khan family has become the main villain of the trump campaign, and i absolutely

love that. >> she will be -- by the way, both khans will be with us in a few minutes. we'll get a chance to hear from them at length in a few minutes. it's interesting to me. i can't tell, where is this donald trump feud with muslim-americans, and where is this feud with gold-star parents. is there a line between the two? >> i think it's both. i would echo miguel and frahana in how he's gone too far. he has this vision of america where only certain types of people are american. if you look at the military, if you meet people currently serving or veterans, you see this incredible diversity. he thought in his mind that he could very easily deflect criticism by turning it to

ghazala khan. yesterday, mike pence's only tweet was about how he was getting a haircut. apparently it was like a 24-hour haircut. i don't know. >> he put out a statement overnight. >> he did, but it took a while because nobody really knows how to respond to this. why would you go after a grieving mother? this is about more than just muslims, more than gold-star families. it's about how you treat americans, how you treat people who serve, and what the bounds of political discourse are. >> you know, frahana, what trump says in tweets, he says i was viciously attacked by mr. khan at the democratic convention, am i not allowed to respond. that's what he said initially. earlier than that, he said captain khan killed 12 years ago was a hero. he says this is about radical islamic troerror and the weakne

of our leaders to eradicate it. so he's trying to shift it back. >> the real issue in what mr. khan was talking about last thursday evening was frankly months and months of mr. trump attacking the loyalty of american-muslims. that's why mr. khan spoke for so many millions of american-muslims when he so bravely took the microphone that thursday evening. these are not just words, john. these words are having real life consequences for muslim families and their children across the country. i can't tell you how many mothers and fathers i've heard from in the last several months who've talked about how this rhetoric is actually having an impact on their kids who come home from school asking if they're going to be deported if donald trump is elected president. >> all right. thanks so much for being with us. i do appreciate it. and we should note, we are going to have the khans coming up a little later in this broadcast.

wikileaks founder julian assange is vowing had e may soon release, quote, a lot more material from a hack of the dnc computer system. assange says that unreleased information is related to hillary clinton's campaign and it is, quote, very interesting.

let's find out what we can from him about what it might be. he joins us now to talk about it from the ecuadorian embassy in london. he's been staying there for four years, avoiding extradition to sweden over sexual assault allegations, which he denies. thank you for being with me, mr. assange. let's begin with this. as you know, many are pointing their finger at russia for this hack. the director of national intelligence, james clapper, came out a few days ago and said they don't have enough to ascribe motive yet, but a senior official told us there's little doubt russia is behind the hack. wiki leaks is all about transparency. can you say definitively that russia had nothing to do with this? >> well, i can say definitively, categorically, that your initial introduction is sloppy journalism, which you know that wikileaks dislikes a lot because we're very much concerned with accuracy.

so i am not staying in this embassy, avoiding extradition to sweden. i have political asylum. united nations formally found that the investigation against me was being conducted for an improper purpose. the asylum contains an ongoing espionage investigation in the united states, which has seen my alleged co-defendant chelsea manning imprisoned for 35 years and tortured. the finding on the prison abuse is not just a finding by the united nations, another finding in her case is also a finding by the u.s. military court system itself. >> mr. assange, can we address the question at hand? and that is whether or not you can say definitively that russia had no part in this hack. >> well, what start of question is that? i am a journalist. we don't reveal our sources. >> at the same time, as i said

before, wikileaks is all about transparency. there are concerns among many, and they ask whether or not wikileaks is being used as an intelligence tool, whether it's being used by a foreign government to manipulate the election in the united states. so there is a relevancy there. >> so what is the accusation here precisely? no one disputes even a single e-mail that we have published is authentic. no one in the dnc, not hillary clinton. we brought down the head of the dnc with authentic information provided to the public. we have a ten-year record of complete accuracy. the goal of wikileaks as a media organization is to educate the public, to turn a dark world into a lighter world through the process of education, and we're doing it. >> mr. assange, you spoke with my colleague anderson cooper on

friday, and you said, quote, we have more material related to the hillary clinton campaign. how damaging is that material? >> well, it remains to be seen. i think it is significant material. it takes a lot of work to verify the accuracy, to collate the material into a form where it is easy to understand, easy to search, ascribed where some of the angles are bourn out from the material. so that's the process we're currently engaged in. we are now confident that the material is accurate. so it's the second phase we're engaged in, which is understanding what its importance is and what type of media partners we should have to release it so it has the maximum uptake. >> and that's the question. you said to anderson that before

you released the other e-mails, the 20,000 e-mails from the dnc, it was for maximum publicity, if you will. any sense of the timing on when we may see what you have from the clinton campaign? are we talking about if you've gone thoroughly through it by then, perhaps right before the first debate? >> well, we have quite a lot of material, so i think we will stagger it in different batches as we are ready to publish each batch. >> edward snowden tweeted this. because in this release of e-mails, it included voicemails of children with their parents, some social security numbers, some passport numbers. edward snowden tweeted, democratizing information has never been more vital, and wikileaks has helped, but their hostility to even modest curation is a mistake. why publish it in full and not redact some of those things, including voicemails with children, for example? >> well, there has been

significant false reporting. for example, false reporting about there being credit card numbers in there. this is a play by the clinton campaign. there is the last four digits of credit card numbers, just like there is on a receipt for something you buy -- >> but there were some children's voicemails. >> we're talking about the dnc. we're talking about the ruling party of the united states and its material, not private information. the information held by the dnc. now, wikileaks has -- is not going to be tampering with evidence which will almost certainly be used in several successive court cases. we have a history of that. our material has gone on in hundreds of different court cases to liberate innocent people from prison, to secure civil settlements up to $54 billion, in one case against russia for its oil expiration. and serious cases involving even

republican leaders repudiate trump, referring to the republican nominee as having a black soul. so will donald trump apologize to this family? khizr khan will join us live in a moment. first, cnn's phil mattingly with the latest on this controversy. >> reporter: good morning, john. top republican officials are waking up this morning to this reality. their nominee, the republican nominee s currently in an escalating feud with the parents of a slain u.s. soldier. it's one that has put all of them on defensive, most notably trump's running mate mike pence. >> have you even read the united states constitution? [ cheers and applause ] i will -- i will gladly lend you my copy. you have sacrificed nothing and no one. >> reporter: a defining moment at the democratic national

convention, now sending shock waves through donald trump's presidential campaign. >> i think i made a lot of sacrifices. i work very, very hard. i've created thousands and thousands of jobs. >> reporter: trump criticizing this muslim mother and father of a u.s. soldier killed in iraq. >> his wife, if you look at his wife, she was standing there. she had nothing to say. she probably -- maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. you tell me. >> reporter: khizr khan, whose son was killed in 2004, firing back at trump. >> for this candidate for presidency to not be aware of the respect of a gold-star mother standing there, and he had to take that shot at her, this is height of ignorance. he is a black soul, and this is totally unfit for the leadership of this beautiful country. >> reporter: his wife also speaking out in a "washington

post" op-ed saying, quote, walking on to the convention stage with a huge picture of my son behind me, i could hardly control myself. what mother could? donald trump has children whom he loves. does he really need to wonder why i did not speak? trump attempting to clarify his remarks in a statement, calling khan's son, quote, a hero, but also stating khan had no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim i have never read the constitution, which is false. khan defending his scathing rebuke of trump, saying he wrote his own speech. >> there is no clinton campaign here. there is no prompter here. i am articulate person. >> reporter: adding that trump is missing two qualities required in a president.

>> that is moral compass and second is empathy. this candidate is void of both traits that are necessary for the stewardship of this country. i do not believe his whole year-long rhetoric, division, excludeing people, talking about them derogatorily, has prepared him. >> reporter: late sunday, trump's running mate, indiana governor mike pence, issuing his own statement. quote, the family, like all gold-star families, should be cherished by every american, all as top republicans are distancing themselves from trump's remarks and praising captain khan as a hero. mccain's daughter tweeting this over the weekend. i would ask what kind of barbarian would attack the parents of a fallen soldier, but oh, yeah, it's the same person who attacks p.o.w.s. >> he has throughout the course of his campaign consistently insulted and demeaned individuals, groups of americans. >> reporter: now, there were

disavowals, condemnations, but no republican officials have actually pulled their support from donald trump. it's something senate minority leader harry reid said was spineless, referring specifically to senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and house speaker paul ryan. that said, i've been talking to republican officials yesterday and this morning. they're all saying at this point it's a weather the storm type of moment, hope this doesn't go that much further, make the position that much more untenable. still, we've seen this happen a number of times over the course of the campaign. this could be, though, that bridge too far, at least that's what people are wondering right now. >> phil mattingly, thanks so much. let's talk to the family in the middle of this controversy. khizr khan and gahazala khan, parents of the fallen soldier killed in 2004.

thank you so much for being with us. i really appreciate it. khizr, let me ask you first, since you spoke thursday night, did you ever imagine you'd be in the middle of this campaign controversy? what did you think was going to happen? >> thank you, john. no, i did not -- neither my family. we're private people. we participated in this convention because a tribute was being paid and there was context to my conversation. we had been patiently subjected to the maligning of this candidate for a whole year. enough is enough. every decent republican has said -- i apologize if i'm a little emotional about this. every republican has rebuked his behavior, yet no one has stood up and said, enough, stop it, you will not be our candidate. in private they have done this. we are aware of it, that in

private they have done this. speaker paul ryan, senate majority leader, other senior republican leadership have done that. but this candidate's maligning of decent, patriotic republican has continued. look what he did and how he spoke about mitt romney. look what he did, how he spoke with senator mccain. this is a consistent -- this is proof of his ignorance and arrogance. and i again and again ask his advisers to get him in a room and close the door and set him right. if he wants to be the candidate of this wonderful republican party, republican and democratic party, both are as patriotic as anywhere and anyone, therefore i am amazed at the love and care

that we have received, that we continue to receive, and we will continue to speak up until this candidate behaves in a dignified manner deserving of the candidacy of this office. >> mr. khan, you just called him ignorant and arrogant. in fact, donald trump said you attacked him at the democratic convention. in a tweet, he said, i was viciously attacked by mr. khan at the democratic convention, am i not allowed to respond? so -- >> bear with me. >> go ahead. >> that is again his ignorance of the first amendment. i have exactly same rights as he does. he had been abusing, disrespecting women, judges, all decent americans. he had been so abusive of them. i exercise exactly same rights. that again proves his ignorance.

he wants to have one set of rights for himself, and he wants to have another set of rights for others. no, somebody should tell him that there is equal dignity, equal protection of law in this country. that is why that constitution came to play. i keep that in my pocket because i cherish this document. i wish somebody would read it to him. certain fundamental values that enshrine in this document. >> his supporters say since you've talked about this, since you have exercised your first amendment rights, you're now fair game. it is now fair game for donald trump to talk about you and his supporters to talk about you. you spoke at the democratic convention, which is a political platform. >> they have been exercising their rights, so there's nothing new to that. we are private citizens.

we are private people. we want to be out of this controversy. my good wife had been insisting that i not respond. i take a more dignified path than responding to undignified attacks and comments. therefore, we jointly decide that there is no need to escalate this. we have made the point. the amount of recognition, the amount of love, support, care, street corners, any place we go to, people come and say, you have spoken what we wanted to say. i have my e-mail box full of messages from prominent republicans that are saying that this year no republican presidential would. so we want to be out of this controversy. we don't want to continue. that is not our style.

we are decent, dignified family of this country, very appreciative of the blessings that we have enjoyed, continue to enjoy, and we want to remain that way. this is not our path. >> mrs. khan, i want to talk to you because donald trump specifically questioned you and questioned your silence at the democratic convention last thursday. i wanted i want to play you the sound. undoubtedly you've heard it by now about what he said on your choice not to speak on thursday. let's listen. >> his wife -- if you look at his wife, she was standing there. she had nothing to say. maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. you tell me. but plenty of people have written that. she was extremely quiet. looked like she had nothing to say. a lot of people have said that. >> mrs. khan, i would like to give you a chance to respond to that right now. >> actually, i have already

responded in my statement that i think it was published in "washington post." but still, i can say that my religion or my family or my culture never stopped me saying whatever i want to say. my husband is very supportive of me in these things, that i have all the rights as a wife, as a mother, as a daughter. i have done very well saying my mind out, but that time was different. and anybody can see it was different that time when i was standing there in front of america. without saying a word, i had lots of love. i touched lots of hearts. so i'm thankful for everything that america has given me. everything that i had got from america, most of it the love and

respect. i just -- i'm so happy to be saying that i am a muslim woman, and muslim women have all the righ rights. in the eyes of god, we're equal to our husbands. we are equal, and we are number one in the household. in my family, in my culture, in my community. i'm very glad that i have been in this country and i got all the happiness. somebody have to pay the price for this freedom that we have. thank you, america. >> as a gold-star mother, is there a message you want to send right now to the country about what you're feeling four days into this discussion?

>> i'm really very happy for the things that i got from america and from all over the world. my respect, my love. always, wherever i go, people hug me, people love me. not right now but for all these 12 years, i had america's respect. that's why i thought i should go with my husband, stand there, and tell them how muslim feels in this country. we feel very protected. we feel very happy. our futures -- our children are in a safe place. >> mr. khan, donald trump is apparently watching right now. on twitter he just said, mr. khan, who does not know me, vish viciously attacked me from the stage of the dnc and is now all over tv doing the same.

nice, he said, given that you know he is watching now, is there a message you would like to send to him about this discussion? >> i really want to maintain mine and my family's dignity. i spoke what was appropriate, and if he's watching, just imagine, there was no need to comment the way he commented. that initiated this conversation. i again say, we want to maintain our dignity. we want to maintain my family's dignity, my son's dignity and sacrifice. and he should listen to america, what america and the world is telling about the remarks, about the lack of empathy, and that's all i wish to convey to him.

a good leader has one trait. earlier i said empathy. i probably right now will misspell it, but it is basic character, feeling pain, the difficulties of the people you wish to lead, and that is missing. donald trump needs to sit with his advisers and portray to this world that he is empathetic. you solve the problems with empathy, putting people together. there are bad people among us, but there are good people among us as well. you gather good people to get rid of bad people, but you do not malign the whole religion, the whole culture. we are the solution to dealing

with terrorism in the united states. join hands with good muslims. only war is not the solution. it is one of the solutions. communities coming together is the solution. we are as concerned as donald trump is about the safety of this country. we are testament to the goodness of this country. we need to stop fighting with one another. we need a leader that will unite us, not disrespect, not by derogatory remarks. i feel bad about the discourse that this campaign, this election campaign has taken. we need to join hands. we have a very serious problem for the safety of the citizens of this country. we are solution. look the treatment of muslims in france and other places.

there is much worse security issues than united states does. we can all -- >> mr. khan? >> yes. >> mike pence, whose son was in the marines, he put out a statement overnight where he honored your loss and the sacrifice of your son and that your family has made. he also talked about policy a little bit. this is mike pence, governor of indiana. he said, by suspending immigration from countries that have been compromised by terrorism, we will reduce the likelihood that other american families will face the enduring heartbreak of the khan family. mike pence there talking about policy, i parentally what is now the trump campaign policy where they want to suspend immigration from countries where there are terrorist issues. i'm wondering if you have a response or a comment on what governor pence said. >> i appreciate this statement that governor pence issued. we are very heartened by his

remarks about our family. we're grateful for that. as far as the policy and tightening the policy, that is what we need. where already have those measures in place. can we make them better? of course we can make them better. because with the hands of these criminals, we have all suffered. we strengthen hands of our leaders to find the solution. are there better solutions? of course there are better solutions. let's go and implement them. let's make those policies and implement them. but let's not create, strengthen the hands of enemies by these remarks, by these statements. believe me, these statemnts strengthen their recruitment process. the young men and women that are disheartened because of the

discourse of these campaigns begin to look to those solutions by joining. let's create an environment and policy. i agree with governor pence that that will be a wonderful idea, to strengthen our security policies. i don't disagree with that. >> mr. khan, part of this discussion that's been going on for four days, is it has to do with your son who died now 12 years ago. he in some ways is overshadowing this entire discussion, yet he's hardly discussed. i'm wondering if you could just tell us about your son. >> he was a wonderful, patriotic person. the cadets of his school come to our home to pay tribute to him every year. we invite them to our home for a particular purpose. we give them a copy of the same constitution that i have.

i have a stack of it at home. there is a reason behind that, and that reason is for people to know when they step -- they comment, they say, wow, this is first time we have stepped in a muslim home. this looks like our home. this looks like our parent's home. and thank you for giving us this copy of the constitution. in a school, we have read it, where we will cherish to read it because we are taking oath tomorrow to this constitution. it will be wonderful to have. there are messages in here that we are all same, regardless of our religions. unite us, not divide us. our cultures that follow these religions unite us. there is peace and harmony in these religions. and our son laid the path for that. i will give you one simple example of his character, how he

was. at university of virginia in the basketball court, there were two teams used to play. african-american students and white-american students always playing separately, not playing together, not talking to one another. he was the one that one step at a time he will drag one player to here and one player from there and bring them together. in few weeks, the whole team was playing together. we received a delegation of those students after passing, and they said for all of our life, he taught us how to come together. that is what he was. that is who he was. and to him we pay tribute by this small gesture of trying to bring some peace in this political discourse, trying to bring some respect towards each other. that is what he was. that is dedicated to his spirit. >> mrs. khan, i know it's

difficult for you to speak of your son, even 12 years later, but i want to give you an opportunity to share with the country your thoughts on captain khan. one memory, one thing you want us all to know about him. >> one memory that i was just thinking about, i went to ft. knox. he was stationed there. and it was christmas. he took us to his sergeant's house. i said -- he said, sergeant has invited me. then we passed through the colonel's house. there were lots of people there. he said, colonel hasn't invited you? no, he did, and everybody's going to his house, but nobody's going to sergeant's house. i don't want to break his heart. so instead of going to colonel's house and enjoying everything, he went to his sergeant's family

and we had a very nice time with that family. >> mrs. khan probably would like to tell the last conversation on mother's day that you had with him. please tell that. >> on mother's day in may 2004, when he called, he talked to me. as a mother, i said, please, don't be hero, just stay back and just finish your time. three-fourths of the year is left, so you will be home soon. and please, just stay back. he laughed and said, mom, you know these soldiers are my responsibility. i don't want anything to happen to them because i am responsible. i have to do my job. i am responsible for my soldiers. and he came back, but he came back as a hero. >> ghazala khan, khizr khan,

thank you for being us with this morning. we honor your loss and sacrifice. thank you for being with us. >> thank you. >> cnn has an open invitation for donald trump to respond. thus far, he has declined. >> all right. let's discuss this fire storm. let's get reaction from cnn political commentator and former campaign manager from corey lewandowski. he is still receiving severance from the campaign, i should note. also joining us, democratic leader, christine quinn. as john pointed out, it appears mr. trump was watching. he tweeted, mr. khan, who does not know me, viciously attacked me from the stage of the dnc and is now all over television doing the same. i want to take a step back and look at this 72 hours this weekend in full. mr. trump is continuing the fight with this family.

at the same time, he made a clear error in his interview on abc saying that russia is not in ukraine, appearing to not know about the annexation of crimea. at the same time, he's talking about the debate versus nfl games and creating, you know, a fluster over something that was planned a year ago by democrats and republicans. corey, you know the man, you know the mind. what's the strategy here? >> let's take it one at a time. that's the easiest way to do it. first and foremost p as it relates to the presidential debates, donald trump is going to get the debate schedule changed. regardless of when those debates were set, the presidential debate commission is not tasked with performing at the debate stage. that's donald trump's job and hillary clinton's job. if they can agree to change the dates, they should do that. so that more people can participate. because right now, the debates are scheduled against primetime nfl football games. >> these three things all together -- >> i understand, but let's look at them individually. >> what's going on in the mind -- >> can we stop about football

games and talk about that family? >> exactly. why the continuing the fight right now with the family. >> he's not fighting with the family. he's gone on and said captain khan is a hero. he said that publicly. you tend to glaze over that notion. he said it very publicly. >> i'm not glazing over it. we can pull that statement up. absolutely. he said it in a statement from the campaign. >> that's right. >> he hasn't come out himself and said it. >> he said it from his twitter account. those are his words that he said. >> so why did he tweet, he viciously attacked me? >> what he is saying is -- look, he said captain khan is a hero. if donald trump was president, captain khan would still be alive today because we never would have entered iraq. number two, he said this is something the khan family decided to engage in by going to the democratic convention and telling their story. they're welcome to do that. but mr. trump has the ability to respond. >> would you have advised him to

bring up the silence of the grieving mother after the fact? >> here's what i would say to him. when someone attacks you publicly in front of a stage of millions of people, you have the ability to respond. now, this is a very sensitive issue. >> she didn't say a word! she didn't say a word. >> excuse me. >> no, this is ridiculous. it is outrageously un-american. >> he understands that and called him a hero. he does have the ability when someone attacks him personally and accuses him of something which he has never done. he said he's never read the constitution. he has the ability to respond. >> he also insinuated that the wife -- >> no, he didn't insinuate. >> he said maybe she wasn't allowed to speak. >> he did more than insinuate. he flat out said it. any decent person who saw mrs. khan on stage could see the pain and the grief in her face. and any person who has lost anyone or even any person who's been so blessed they haven't

could understand why she couldn't talk, even all these years later, about losing her son in the way she lost him. i lost my mother when i was 16. i'm 50. i couldn't stand in front of america and talk about her. and then to make -- >> you got to relax a little bit. >> i do not have to relax. >> excuse me. don't touch me. >> oh, calm down. she chose to stand there -- i'm not going to relax because we have a man running for president in the united states who made a gold-star mother have to go on tv and cry in front of america. this isn't about politics. >> he didn't ask her to go on f tv. >> she felt she had to. this isn't about politics. this isn't about presidential campaigns. this is not even about me nicely touching your arm. it is about decency and gold-star parents. >> let's hear from those gold-star parents for a moment. >> the parents chose to go and

anti-american comments. corey, should he walk this back? >> he's called him a hero. >> should he apologize? >> apologize for saying he's a hero? absolutely not. >> he said many other things as well, like just now on twitter. >> donald trump has said that captain khan is a hero. first and foremost. he has said that publicly. >> what about gold-star families? >> they're all after an apology. >> let me ask a question. george w. bush when he was president faced a lot of criticism from gold-star families. always, whenever he would respond, he would say, i understand the pain they're going through, i'm not going to talk about them personally, let me talk about the policies. okay. >> that's appropriate. >> what donald trump did was objectively different. while he said captain khan was a hero, what he did there was he questioned why this woman was being silent. he did not honor her loss in that initial statement with george stephanopoulos. it's not in the transcript there.

what he said is, i wonder why she's silent. that is a choice -- that is a choice that he made. he did treat this differently than other politicians have in the past. >> but remember how this began. mr. khan got up and said, donald trump is a bad person who's never read the constitution, et cetera, et cetera. that's how this began. donald trump's response was, your son is a hero, but you shouldn't have attacked me. and that's a fair point to make. >> and then he said, what about the wife? >> then the khans have said -- >> then he said what about the wife. answer me. what did he say about the wife? >> we don't want to be on tv anymore. they were on cbs yesterday. they were on cnn today. they were on abc yesterday. look, they can be on tv all they want to be, but when they have a response now that they don't appreciate, their answer is, we don't want to be on tv anymore, we want to have this go away. they engage in this discussion to begin with. their son is a hero, and every person who's ever died fighting for our country and their families are heroes. the difference is we've got

7,000 soldiers who have died, $6 trillion wasted in wars overseas that if donald trump was the president, we would never have had. and captain khan would be alive today. >> mike pence, his running mate, came out with a statement to that effect and talked about policy last night. why wasn't that donald trump's response right away, policy, the policies i'm proposing will save more of these families. >> the khan family did not attack governor pence. they attacked donald trump directly. >> they're running mates. >> it doesn't matter. if i attack you or mr. berman, they're two separate things. >> he said, have you ever read the constitution. by the way, this is something donald trump would say. >> can i say something, please? first of all, this isn't about the khan family. mr. khan spoke and then donald trump attacked mrs. khan and whether she has the ability to speak. with a gross insensitivity, an

inability to see the clear grief and anguish on that woman's face. i understand politics. i've been a cin a campaign. sometimes things are greater than a campaign. this family's loss, this family's feeling that their religion had been attacked, you know what the appropriate response is, attack or not? we're sorry for your loss, and we thank you for raising such a wonderful child who would give his life to protect his men and women. that's the only answer here. because some things are actually greater than politics, and some things require people to just take it and move on. because the other person's pain is more profound than theirs. >> corey, is this, to christine's point, a bridge too far? it's one thing to come at the way he did against john mccain and question his war hero status. john mccain is a politician and

a war hero for this country. it's another thing when you're dealing with a gold-star family, a family that's not a political family. yes, they spoke on stage at the dnc, but a family who lost their son 12 years ago and their heartbreaks every day still. is it a bridge too far? >> they've become a political family when you stand in front of 20 million people at a democratic -- >> does it take away their loss? >> of course it doesn't take away their loss, but it also doesn't allow you the shield of saying i don't want to be in the national spotlight anymore. when you decide to step forward in front of 20 million people at a democratic national convention to tell the story of your family and personally attack or at least allude to attack the republican gop candidate for president, you no longer have the shield of saying, i don't want to be in the spotlight. >> what does this get donald trump, this fight? >> he didn't start the fight. >> but he's still engaging in it this morning. >> this is the typical media. when donald trump responds to somebody, they say he's attacking. he's not. he's counterpunching. he did not start this. >> presidents often face

criticism from parents and family members of those who serve. donald trump wants to be commander in kmechief. what message does this send to the people in the military right now, the families of those serving about how donald trump as president would react to their grief. >> and they rarely attack the families. presidents of both parties rarely ever, maybe never, attack the families because being a leader, being a commander in chief sometimes means, often means rising above. this whole thing makes me, i have to say, soul sick about the state of this country at this moment. that anyone would attack those families. >> if donald trump was the president, captain khan would be alive today because he never would have engaged in a war that didn't directly benefit this country. he's been very clear about that fact and said i don't support the war and i don't suppo afghanistan. >> did he tell howard stern he supported the war? >> but he was also -- >> he said i would have done

jeffrey lore. both of you were listening to that entire interview john did the parents and the exchange following it with our political commentators. general, your reaction to what you heard from this family? >> poppy, cnn asks he often to comment on military activity and terrorist actions and the kinds of things going on, on the battlefield. they don't often ask me to comment on the leadership aspects of our commanders in the field. if donald trump is asking to be commander in chief, he needs to be evaluated on those measures too. there's obviously a character and a humility and empathy and an integrity issue surrounding this particular situation. having dealt with hundreds, lit ra literally hundreds of gold star families and understanding their pain, i will tell you this has been devastating to the khan family, to be sure, but i think it's affected many, many other gold-star families who have seen

a lack of understanding by a potential commander in chief. >> jeffrey, as a trump supporter, to what general hertling just said, and we read the letter from the gold-star families demanding an apology from donald trump, your response? >> yeah, i mean, this is politics. i mean, i hate to say this. let me make very clear, captain khan obviously, obviously was an american hero, but to be perfectly candid, any time anybody -- anybody, the khanninkhans or anyone else -- stands in front of a convention, they are opening themselves up to disagreement. that's what's happened. it's nothing more than that. >> well, it is more than that because this is the life of a fallen american soldier. >> it is definitely more than that, jeffrey. >> in terms of how it affected these other families.

over 470,000 gold-star families in this country right now. many of us don't know their loss. so it's more than politics, isn't it, jeffrey? >> no, poppy. poppy, when anybody, anybody, gold star or not, gets up and attacks a presidential candidate at a national convention, that is politics. mr. khan, and i listened to him this morning, is giving donald trump political lectures. i have my copy of the constitution too. he is well within his rights to do so. donald trump is well within his rights to respond. you don't get to do this and then say, oh, no, you can't attack me, i'm off limits. i'm sorry. your very presence there signifies otherwise. you are in a leadership position when you are making an attack on a presidential candidate at a national convention. >> at what point -- >> that's just a fact. >> at what point, jeffrey lord, is it a bridge too far? the feud is continuing on twitter this morning. we just had a tweet from donald trump saying again he's being

viciously attacked. what does it get him? >> why him? why is mr. khan on cnn? why is he on cbs? why is he on abc? i mean, he's the one who's continuing this. stop, stop. if he doesn't want to be in the spotlight, stop. >> general hertling? >> i think what you're seeing is mr. trump is continuing it too with continued attacks. i agree that certainly mr. khan entered the political arena. but when you're talking about a commander in chief, they have to show some leadership traits and not react as mr. trump has reacted on multiple occasions. truthfully what i can see, i go back to the word trust, poppy. there's a generation ofleader a. that's a critical aspect for any candidate, someone running for office. they have to generate that trust. what we're seeing is a continued drum beat against that generation of trust with the american people and with those that support the military. there is a continued emphasis on

insulting people, having everyone from mr. khan to senator mccain to me personally to others who have said, here's what the military can do, here's what they should do, and here's the kind of trust that we impart in our political leaders. you have to establish that civil/military relationship. that obviously is not in place right now and mr. trump doesn't understand it. >> i want to move forward to something developing over the weekend in this interview donald trump gave to george stephanopoulos on abc. they spoke about a lot of issues, including russia and ukraine. let's play a segment of that interview when he's asked about russia's role in ukraine. >> he's not going into ukraine, just so you understand. he's not going to go into ukraine. you can mark it down, put it down. >> well, he's already there, isn't he? >> i mean, general, to you, that is a fundamental misunderstanding of the geopolitical situation. basically not acknowledging the

annexation of krooi mi wcrimea. does that concern you? >> beyond that, i'd say it's a misunderstanding and gets back to that leadership element of intellect. he not only doesn't understand the fact that russia has already annexed crimea, but that he has many thousands of troops in eastern ukraine. in fact, the minska court is still continuing to be fraught with failure. up to this point, there have been over 10,000 lives lost in eastern ukraine between the russian little green men and the ukrainian forces. in fact, u.s. military forces are in western ukraine helping the ukrainian military defend themselves and defend the sovereignty of that state. so yeah, it's definitely a misunderstanding of what's going on in ukraine. >> so jeffrey lord, your reaction as well when you look at the bigger context of this. that is, at the rnc, the republican party platform for the united states towards ukraine changed significantly. and it has been widely reported, including by josh rogan in "the

washington post," that the trump campaign is the one that pushed that change, the change that took away the united states pushing for arming of ukrainians against russia. so it looks like a more pro-russian stance now. that's the bigger context of this. >> well, the bigger context is why did this happen in the first place? this is the obama administration and hillary clinton running american foreign policy. how did we get to that stage? i mean, that's the thing that seems to get lost here. these things are not happening in a vacuum. american foreign policy has been set by president obama for eight years and by hillary clinton for four. and this was the result. let's recall the russian reset button. i mean, she's presided over one disaster after another, and now we're supposed to think that she's competent to be president of the united states. >> did it concern you to hear what trump said to george stephanopoulos, saying he's not there? >> no, no. what concerns me is benghazi and leaving state department employees behind to die. that concerns me. >> jeffrey lord, general

sons, i want to just share that i cannot even imagine what the kahn family has gone through, and all the thousands of families that have suffered with the loss of their child. so our heart is with everyone impacted. the reason they spoke tt democratic national convention is because trump has been attacking the american muslim community from day one. his trying to put a negative stereotype, attacking this community, it is important for the community to stand up and share with the world that, look, we are as patriotic as anyone else is, and that's what the purpose of the kahn family was to actually stand up in defense of the american values in a defense of the american constitution. >> he says, donald trump says the story is not about mr. kahn. this is in a tweet he put out during our interview. this is not about mr. kahn, who is all over the place doing interviews, but rather, radical

islamic terrorism in the u.s. get smarts, he says. so donald trump says the issue is terrorism. >> so here is the challenge. again, the problem is, donald trump doesn't get it. as soon as he does not understanding is or he actually does not like something, he become as cu-- becomes accusatod as a president, you have to be the commander in chief. keep in mind, what he is doing is he is alienating on all minority communities in america. now, think about this. about 30% of our military is minority, and if you look at the hispanics in the military, they are about 40%. women it, comes down to about more than 45, 46% of our military is of minority groups. and if the commander in chief, potential future commander in chief is alienating all of them,

i think he is not a good candidate to be the commander in chief of our country. he tries to use the faith of the evil individuals who have been trying to use the faith of islam to attack us and the world, and in so many ways, to try to justify, marginalize to our community. i think there are serious issues with his understanding and his capacity to lead it. >> it is interesting. this has started a scriptions over t -- a discussion over the last four days, the kahn talking about their faith and their lost. i've heard a lot of back and forth over this issue. >> i agree with you, because frankly, this is actually the things that we need to identify, because we have, as americans, have very important decisions to make in the next few months. it is important that we actually make the right choice at this point, because we cannot have an individual who is so full of hatred, who has lack of

us. but there are good people among us as well. you gather good people to get rid of bad people. but you do not malign the whole religion, the whole culture. we are the solution to dealing with the terrorism in the united states. >> trump, live tweeting during the interview with "new day," saying mr. kahn, who does not know me, viscously attacked me from the stage of the dnc and is all over tv doing the same. nice. kahn, directly responding to the tweet. >> i really want to maintain mine and my family's dignity. i spoke what was appropriate, and if he is watching, just imagine, there was no need to comment the way he commented.

extended throughout the republican and democratic party. hillary clinton has attacked donald trump for this back and forth, but also top republican officials have done the same. condemning the remarks across the board, but nobody pulling their support just yet. i spoke to one senate republican campaign official, asked what the reaction is. he said just weather the storm. hope he moves on. at least at this points, john, that has not occurred. >> thank you, phil. now to discuss, sam clovis. sam, thank you for being with us this morning and continuing this discussion. >> good to see you, john. >> sam, you're military dad. your son is in the air force. i want to get your reaction to what you saw from the kahns this morning. >> well, i thought it was compelling and powerful interview. i don't take anything away from that at all. i think the kahn family and being a parent of a military member, son, brother of a veteran, a veteran myself, i fully understand their pain and i understand what they've gone

through. i don't think until someone, you know, has had the opportunity or i shouldn't say the opportunity, but had the duty of having to go talk to a family who has lost someone, and i've had to do that, i will tell you, there is nothing heavier on your heart than that. i really do understand where they're coming from, and a lot of this view. i want to make something pretty clear here, john. one of the issues that has bothered me, and i watched the democratic convention. one of the things that bothered me from the start, we would identify a a person who puts on a uniform of the united states with a qualifier other than american soldier. this is one of the issues that raised my eyebrows a little bit when i first heard the speech. which i thought was powerful. again, it was very compelling. but the issue is that when people put on the uniform of the united states to defend this country, defend the constitution, we swear an oath to the constitution, not to the president, not to the congress, not even to the people. but to the constitution.

that you put aside all other qualifiers. we don't go into the military, the enemy doesn't shoot a muslim american. the enemy doesn't shoot an african-american. the enemy doesn't shoot an asian american. the enemy shoots at an american. and so there are no qualifiers once you put on the uniform. that's one of the base issues that we probably need to not forget. >> that's an interesting point. sam, your answer, at the beginning, know, is qualitatively different than we heard from donald trump. i suppose, again, i'm asking this as a military father and someone who has had to deliver this news, which i can't imagine being in that position, is there a responsibility that a commander in chief has in engaging in a dialogue with grieving parents or military family, is there a way that he or she needs to -- needs to talk or needs to express empathy? >> well, i think there is, but i also think that the circumstance was brought about through an

action -- i will tell you, i really believe that the kahns had absolutely no idea of the consequences of the speech, when they politicized this issue. that's -- we have to call it what it is. this became a political issue the moment they took the stage. and i think that that really is one of the parts that's missing here. there are consequences to those issues. >> even so, sam -- >> john, just one other point i wanted to make. the question oftentimes asked of me is how do you come, you know, i work for mr. trump, i've worked for him for a year now, i wouldn't be here if i didn't believe in his integrity and the loyalty. i am a veteran. people who know me know that i do have a high level of integrity myself. i wouldn't work for the individual if i didn't think he was a worthy individual to be the president of the united states. the one thing i that i do know, and the one thing i trust about donald trump is i know donald

trump would never have left me on the battle field. >> sam -- >> the joycchoices we have to m is whether or not a commander in chief will leave people on the battle field, and we already have evidence on the other side that we now how that action will take place. >> well, okay. i don't want to get into a discussion about benghazi right now. we're talking the response -- >> john, we're talking about the temperament of the commander in chief. you brought it up. george w. bush, cindy sheahan, highly critical of him. think you were critical too of iraq policy. >> absolutely. i still am. >> right. but i never heard george w. bush respond the way that donald trump did, or with anything other than great delicacy when he was responding to these very passionate, very critical people like cindy sheahan. >> well, cindy sheahan camped out in crawford, texas.

i think we all remember that issue. there have been other gold star families. i understand that their grief and pain. i really do. you know, having to confront that, i'll tell you, john, there is nothing, nothing more heavier on your heart than having to go tell someone that their loved one is not coming home. >> you say this -- let me ask you this question. how does that jive with then saying why was the mother sil t silent? those seem -- >> we have to remember the context. i don't believe that the kahn family really felt that what they were doing was anything other than going out and expressing their grief to the american people. but that, when they took the stage, that became a political issue, and it became a political issue in this campaign. and it is being dealt with as a political issue. and look at the media coverage that we've had on this on both sides. look at the discussions that we've had. and john, you said earlier in

the program, i was watching very intently, i thought something was very important. the fact of the matter is, we are probably bringing up issues to be discussed here that haven't been talked about. one other factor that i haven't heard, and i haven't heard any -- we really need to hear more on this, is that captain kahn was killed by people who adhere to radical islam. all americans who died, 6,000 of those family, americans that have died in this war, were killed by people adhering to radical islam. i think we need to hear more of a dialogue about what we're going to do about fighting this very destructive and very insidious threat that we have around the world. >> it was interesting -- >> not just isis. >> it was interesting to hear captain kahn's father, about how concerned he is against the battle against terrorism and how he thinks muslim americans are the key to that battle here in this country. he agrees with you it is a serious concern.

sam, i want to talk about some other issues. this was a remarkable weekend. it wasn't just this weekend. it was also donald trump talking about ukraine. is russia and ukraine right now, is vladimir putin operating in ukraine right now? >> certainly, dumbas area, the russian area of ukraine, i understand the geography and i know it extremely well. you have to remember, i'm an old russia hand. i haven't lost that touch. i follow them very carefully and i know exactly where they are and what they're doing. >> so unequivocal yes from sam clovis. it wasn't an unequivocal yes when donald trump was asked about it. does he have the same understanding you do? >> i've been there john, as you know. i've written for office myself. i can tell that you sometimes your mind is, you hear the question, but your mind is on something is else, and oftentimes, you don't always

jeff's thoughts on immigration. i mean, the trump recant on a muslim ban was rather silly, because he said we're going to have a temporary ban on countries affiliated with terrorism. there is 56 muslim countries, and i would say about 54 of them have terrorists that have come out of there. it is still a muslim ban. it is interesting that mr. kahn immigrated from pakistan. i can say this as a tech en entrepreneur. finest tech talent today, ukraine, pakistan. we're poaching their tal reent right now. racial profiling, that's crime fighting from the 1950s. what we need now is algorithms, public service, they usually announce their acts on twitter. we can write the codes to find these guys before the attack happens and the coders that we

that muslims can be patriotic. there are muslims in this country who serve this nation. in fact, muslims served in the revolutionary war with george washington. the batter of bunker hill, right through now, 6,000 muslims serving in the military. captain kahn is not the only muslim buried in the national cemetery with honors. the kahn family had enough. it is not just about a ban. donald trump has said thousands of muslims cheered after 9/11 in new jersey. absolutely not true. he says i islam hates us. hiding the enemy within us. completely wrong. people know this is actually wrong. but still, donald trump has come after our community. going after the gold star family, only two people. donald trump and isis. isis put out a statement mocking the kahn family. donald trump wants to attack a muslim. attack me. don't attack this gold star family. this family suffered. more courageous in one day.
