a journalist tiptoeing around the uncomfortable realty about race and gender are really shaping this election. as you said this week, hillary clinton and donald trump went toe to toe over this. these are sites that sometimes express down right racist and sexist views. trump fired back before and after clinton's speech, calling her a bigot, claiming she exploits minorities solely for their votes. can i say something here? let's just be honest about this. it's already august, and we're already using words like bigot and racist and sometimes in the day to day, really minute by minute headlines, it seems like we lose track of the broader stories that are happening. underneath the fiery rhetoric this week, simmers an issue that some say has fueled trump's rise all the way from this time last

year. how trump expose america's white identity crisis. that's a lot of what the alt-right is, white nationalism. and whether trump wins or loses in november, this is not an issue that's going away, so we as journalists have to talk about it correctly. this morning we have a panel here to talk about this issue, talk got it in a big picture perspective. jameal smith national correspondent of mtv news, and hillary vance, and scotty nell hughes, a cnn reporter and kmn tate for. do you feel that all the coverage this week has just caused even more dif visiveness, caused even more of a divide in this country, between blacks and whites and hispanics. >> i'll never subscribe to the notion that talking about race

or talking about racism is dif vie sif. we need to understand exactly what the forces are that are driving trump's campaign. since he has chosen to put the head of breitbart on the top of his campaign, i think we need to exam ming what that means. >> what does that mean to you? >> to me it's a rebranding of white supremacy. we have seen other people, especially women and people of color who live their lives online with a target of these folks. >> do you think that-i think we would say they're a mainstream form of the alt-right. >> i would say that, yes, i would say they're part of the white supremacist machine. they're trying to make schur that these views become main stream. >> do you think the coverage this week of donald trump and hillary clinton of these issues about race and racism.

>> we're redefining what's defining this election season. we need to look at the big picture, and let's look at the big picture as to why we're having this conversation this week, and it's not just simply to distract from a very horrible week that hillary clinton had, to distract from the fact that -- it's more important to hillary clinton's problem, is she's worried about in november, the same valuable demographic of the african-american vote is not going to be as engaged as they were in 2008 and 2012 to get out and vote. >> i hear you, but i want to stay on race. this week donald trump called clinton a bigot. doesn't that make your job as a pro trump commentator harder? >> when you look at the definition of bigotry, it's something that has a small mind. hillary clinton was all about

directing hate towards a group that my counter part might consider to be racist, these are god fearing, baby loving, military supporting, school choice advocating americans who love this country. and just because maybe there might be some, a part of a very small fringe group that reads breitbart, saying the entire website is white extreme city, they're -- calling huffington post saying they're pro anarchy and anti-united states government. we should not continue this divide. >> jameal, go ahead. >> i mean frankly, that's not exactly what i was saying. what they present is that view of white supremacist mentality. the point is saying what kind of

viewpoint did they reflect? and it's undeniable that they reflect a white supremacist view if you have looked over their coverage the last several years. >> i have asked gun advocates to come on this program. hopefully they will next week. what's driving some of the anger in rural america. do you believe racial resentment, racial anxiety is a factor in donald trump's campaign? >> i think the answer is yes, it's a large gripe of people and i'm sure people are motivated by racist attitudes. >> that's an uncomfortable thing to say, there's so much talk about economic anxiety in this country, at least this week it's racial anxiety. >> i think there's too much talk about the racial and the -- if you look at what motivates trump supporters, it's not necessarily one or the other, it's waking up and opening the newspaper and

seeing that another kid has died of a heroin overdose, that's a sense of anxiety that doesn't get talked about as mitch, but it's just as important says the racist stuff or the economic stuff. >> it's anxiety about a lot of issues going on. it's about truth that we have a lot of problems going on in the united states. the reason why i think media outlets like breitbart are being targeted is they're actually talking about the truth. there is nothing racist about the front page. hillary is scared and her supporters are scared because newspapers like breitbart are writing about this on the front page. how is that racist? iowa women bash deceptive clinton. it's all about her. the reason why they're being demonized is they're being effective and other media

outlets especially online won't print these types of headlines or tell these stories. >> i might call it alt-realty as well. >> we want to talk about donald trump say going into inner cities, and he hasn't done it yet. >> he has in chicago. >> if i may finish. >> he did it in chicago. >> the point is that donald trump, his quote, unquote out reach is sending a tweet about dwayne wade's cousin being killed on friday afternoon. >> it said dwyane wade's cousin was shot and killed walking her baby in chicago. just what i have been saying, african-americans will vote trump. later in the day, he says my condolences to dwyane wade and his family on the loss of dwyane wade's cousin. we're assuming both of these were written by donald trump, we don't know if they were. it seems often times trump's

campaign is authoring softer gentler messages from trump. >> it's i told you so. not any kind of sympathy, not presenting any kind of solutions for in urban crime that's affected dwyane wade's family, the aldridge family, not any kind of positive steps towards fixing this. it's just i told you so and african-americans are going to vote trump. and the polls are showing that african-americans are will not vote trump. so it's a way to say that african-american are living in these militarized hellscapes, i think that's a real problem in -- we see headlines saying that dwyane wade and trump spoke out about this. no, they haven't spoken out about this. dwyane wade was mourning -- >> a brief response? >> real quick, actually and i agree, african-americans are not going to overwhelmingly vote

republican, but donald trump is trending much better than any other republican candidate has yet. >> that's not true in terms of the polls. >> this morning's polls, right now, and we'll pull them up in the next brake. he's actually engaging more african-americans, there are more african-american surrogates who are speaking on the path. and that's why hillary clinton is so scared and what abouts to create this whole narrative, why if you elect a republican we're going to go back to the middle ages. we should be looking at, where donald trump says there's nothing racist about a job, and that's exactly what he wants to give and that's scares hillary clinton. >> are you laughing because the description of the polls is wrong? >> i'm laughing because i would actually like to see some of these policy put forth. he's stressing nearly all white

audiences and he's addressing them in rhetoric that's offensive to african-americans. i would really like to understand exactly how the media is supposed to be objective about that and how exactly we're supposed to talk about this send stay engaged as black voters. >> what should we be talking about the next few months as we're dealing with race on this campaign coverage? >> we need to recognize that there are -- who are just hurting in social, economic, and at the end of the day i think trump is probably going the lose this election and the biggest question is what happens four or eight years from now what kind of conversation are we having. and i think we should recognize that there are legitimate hurts in these communities because if it keeps on talking about race, as if it's a reductionist issue,

hillary clinton, guilty or not guilty. hillary supporters feel like clinton's been on trial during this entire campaign season. now it's being allegationed that she blurred the lines between where the state department begins and the clinton foundation ends. it's said here this is the lead. more than half the people outside the government who met with hillary clinton while she was secretary of state gave money either personally or through groups to the clinton foundation. this is based on a review of clinton's state department calendar. this tweet was especially

scrutinized. why are they criticizing? ap breaking, more than half of those who met clinton as cabinet secretary gave money to the clinton foundation. the clinton campaign and several media outlets say that the tweet was wrong. they conducted a long investigation. did they just want to show they had done the work, did they just want to show they found something, even if it didn't amount to much. kathleen carol joins us now. do you disagree with anything i said there in the introduction? >> the idea of scrutinizing calendars of public officials is pretty normal. and people who have held public office, they ought to have their calendars scrutinized. the question for me is why has the clinton state department

fought so hard to keep these calendars from us? >> you filed a freedom of information act request, trying to get the calendars. six years ago. >> when we finally got the calendars, there were discrepancies between those calendars and the information that was in her emails. so we went back and said are there any other schedules that the secretary might have been operating under? and they said, oh, you want all of it? so she's been releasing it in dribs and drapes. her first year in office was what this was based on. a review of who she met with. >> did you feel the pressure to publish something even though some have said it didn't amount to much. >> we didn't say it amounted to the end of the world. we said this is an important and interesting thing that people should know about, clinton's tenure in the highest office she's ever held, secretary of

sta state, who she met with. who she employed. these are people she would have met with in the norm al course f her duties as secretary of state. >> but some of the people who met with secretary clinton have gotten meetings with other secretaries of states as well? >> saying they didn't respond to interview requests, does that give you the eight to go ahead and public people and mislead people? >> we don't think it was misleading, we don't know why she met with them. she said so afterwards. i think the issue of conflict of interest is not the actual quit pro quo. maybe they got the meeting with her, maybe they didn't. she said on friday, she understands that people feel there may have been a problem, and if she gets elected, she'll

take steps to nak sure that there's not a problem going forward. >> how does this work behind the scenes, do they call you directly complaining about the story? >> we would be delighted to have more engagement on this topic with the clinton campaign, we asked them questions, they have been unresponsive, they have been unresponsive from the state department until we sued them to get the documents. we're glad to have plenty of conversations with people about that and anything they want to say to us that we can include in the story that will help illuminate their point of view, we'll be glad to include. >> that tweet said that over half of the people that clinton met overall during her state department time gave money to clinton foundation. >> i would say we're a lot better at breaking stories and covering news and gathering stories than we are at making tweets. this one could have used some precision. >> do you regret it?

>> i think it was sloppy. why not delete it? why not take it down and correct it? >> maybe going forward we need to work more on our precision on the details. i would correct one thing that you did say, it did include a link to the story in the tweet itself and the story itself is completely rock solid. as you say, nobody's had anything to say about the story itself. >> sometimes a story can leave a misleading impression with people, even if it isn't exactly false. by focusinging so level on something you give the impression that there's a fire there where there's only smoke. >> this story was measured and it spends a lot of time at the top of the story explaining what we're writing about, what we're not writing about. why we spent-time excluding people who she met with in the course of her duties because that would have been unfair. >> us

>> and wait until you see what it's revealed, all of those people now, it looks like it's 50% of the people that saw her had to make contributions to the clinton foundation. >> so he's taking information from the tweet, extrapolating it and i would say he's misleading people on the campaign trail. isn't that the problem we face as journalism? >> we need to work more on our tweets with care and precision, but we can't be held responsibility for the way that everybody thinks about the coverage. our job is to give them fair and balanced rock solid reporting, read it, agree with it, disagree with it. >> dwyane wade and donald trump speak out on twitter in the wake of nba star's cousin's fatal shooting.

univision. trump's shifting views, shifting plans for immigration. let's take a look at how his conversation about this has evolved and then i'll ask you. >> you're going to split up families. >> no, no, we're going to keep the families together. but they have to go. >> are you going to have a massive deportation force? >> you're going to have a deportation force. >> you're rounding them all up. >> we're rounding them up in a very humane way, a very nice way. i know it doesn't sound nice, but not everything is nice. to take a person that's been here for 15 or 20 years and throw them and their family out, it's so tough, there certainly can be a softening because we're not looking to hurt people. >> if you haven't committed a crime and you've been here for 15 years and you have a family here and a job here, are you going to be deported? >> there's a chance the answer could be yes.

>> what's your answer to trump's shifting position. >> who knows what he's thinking about the deport station, he's backtracking on his flip-flop. i honestly think that donald trump is in panic mode with latinos, i think he realized too late that he can't win the white house without latinos and i have seen the latest polls, univision thinks he might bet 19% of the hispanic vote and by 20% lose the election. so i think he's realizing that he can't win nevada, florida, without the hispanic vote. he expelled me his press conference after i told him that he couldn't deport 11 million people. just think about it, it's the largest massive deportation in u.s. history. maybe people are telling him that's impossible. maybe not impossible, but at least inhumane. now he's trying to take that

people who say you should be removed from the anchor chair? >> i can tell them that i've been doing this job almost 30 years, on november 3, it's going to be 30 years as an anchor man for univision, and i think i am just a journalist asking questions. but the other level of journalism is that it is our responsibility to question those who are in power, and that's i think precisely what i'm doing with donald trump because what are we going to do if a candidate is making racist remarks, what are we supposed to do? are we supposed just to sit down silently and listen to him? no, i think our job as journalists is to question them. >> so you had this interview with tim kaine this morning. as donald trump responded to your interview requests? >> no, i've been trying to get an interview for a year, maybe you can help me. but i have been trying to get an interview for a year.

>> why do you think he's not saying yes? >> he hasn't respond, at some point he said yes, but, you know, about a year ago, i sent him a handwritten note with my cell phone number and he published it online. >> you still have the same number? you didn't have to change the number? >> i changed the number, but he can still reach me. maybe at some point, he'll risk it and he'll decide to talk to us. >> i wonder what sort of media outrage there is in the campaign. what kind of outrage is there? do you have trump spokes people on univision? >> we try, for today, our sunday political show, we try every single sunday to get a spokesperson from the trump campaign, it is almost impossible. it is not only that we cannot get them, it is that they simply don't respond our phone calls. >> that's interesting because

you would think they would want to have representatives on your program the same way that the democrats provide hillary clinton surrogates for your program. >> so what we try to do is to find people who might vote for donald trump or people who have spoken to donald trump just to try to give the other side of the news. >> we're less than a month away from the first presidential debate. i wonder, who do you think should be the moderator? have you heart from is commission? have they reached out to you about possibly moderating? >> i would love to do that, but if it's not me, because the candidates might not want that. m we have many, many great, fantastic journalists who could do a great, great job in the debates and south side time, because they're about to announce it. it is time to have a latino or a

on fox news this month. the trump has made much ado about trump's luncheons. day 267, no press conference and no press outrage. count me as outraged. i think other reporters are raged too. for the record, trump's last press conference was 262 days ago. former chief strategist for mitt romney's presidential campaign. talk to me about this tendency for donald trump to stay on fox news this month. is that going to be a burden come november? >> donald trump is like an amway distributor, talking to other amway distributors instead of new customers. i get that it's comfortable, i get that you can get out your own talking points, it's not just that he's going on fox, he's going on a couple of hannity -- >> fox and friends.

>> fox and friends, chris wallace is one of the toughest interviews in the business, and megyn kelly has been very aggressive. i think it's one of these things, you know, sports, they say, that you should train your weaknesses and race your strengths and it makes you stronger. he needs to be getting out there and answering questions approximate a lot of people if for no other reason that it's good debate prep. >> we'll get to the debates in one moment. this is a text from a trump aid, she says that donald trump has give -- clinton hasn't given a full-fledged press conference since last december. i'm not here to say that press conferences are the most important thing in a sccampaign. but do you think the donald trump campaign should be making

this much of not giving press congress fences. >> someone running for the united states should give press conferences, just that we're debating it is -- she hasn't -- she's not behind in any battle ground states so you're sitting there in that room and you say what are we going to do today? >> would you be telling her to same thing, to not give press conferences? >> you're asking between sort of a civic obligation and a vote getting obligation. >> that's what it's about? >> i think that hillary clinton can handle press conferences, if she can't, there's serious doubts there. they have had some problems in press conferences, but when you don't have one of these things for a long time. when you have them, they become these big, big moments. jeb bush was a great example, he had press conferences every new

minutes and they just don't become a big deal. i think she ought to do more, but it's hard to criticize a campaign that seems headed to. >> no commitment to a press conference. we were talking about the debates a moment ago. laura ingram is participating in the debate prep. we also know that roger ailes is there to debate prep, the former fox news chairman who had to step down last month. and of course steve bannon, who's running trump's campaign. is this a takeover of the trump campaign and out debate prep? >> i think you have to separate steve bannon from breitbart, i mean they're in the hate business.

>> why do you say bright -- >> you rang romney's campaign, you're saying one of the most popular web sites for republipun readers is a hate machine? >> yes. >> really? what does that say about the party? >> i don't know that the trump campaign says anything good about the party. we lost in 2012, we went to the so-called autopsy. i think ryan pre-bus deserves a lot of credit for that. you can debate whether or not there's a moral obligation, i would argue there is, but you can't debate there's a political

mandate. ronald reagan got 56% of the white vote in 1980 and won 44 states. it's just math. i think that -- you know, as for laura ingram, i think she's probably a very good choice for hillary clinton to play. she's whip smart, she was an attorney. i think that's smart s and roger ailes used to be one of the best there is in the debate prep business. he hasn't done that in a long time. but the overall picture, we just said a year and a half ago, if donald trump is going to be running for president and breitbart is running the campaign, this is going to be bad. it's just a realty of who's running and who's running the campaign. up next this morning, new development this morning, donald trump wants morning joe to apologize for this tv segment.
