12:00 am
this is cnn breaking news. >> 3:00 a.m. on the east coast welcome to viewers in the united states and around the world. we continue to follow the breaking news on cnn. an explosion being investigated in new york city. >> we had one explosion and two suspicious devices now. police have video of the explosion and this they will be
12:01 am
wr wr using to investigate. this is surveillance footage of the blast from a fitness center. >> it happened around 8:40 in the evening local time and there are reports it came in near a dumpster. law enforcement sources say that a suspicious device was found blocks away from that blast and we are showing you images of that device. it is a pressure cooker rigged with wires with duct tape and a cell phone. and now we are getting word of yet another device that is being investigated. we'll get more on that from jean casarez who is on the ground covering it in just a moment. the first explosion, the good news is no one was killed and only one person has severe injuries. 29 people were wounded. and we know that nine -- at nine
12:02 am
have already been released. the new york mayor and other officials briefed reporters on the incident a couple of hours ago. here's some of what he had to say. >> there is no evidence at this point of a terror connection to this incident. this is preliminary information. it's something we will be investigating very carefully. but there is no evidence at this point of a terror connection. but we do want to be very clear. the early indications, the initial indications, this was an intentional act. >> these are the guys of the nypd. they know what they're doing and are methodical with the information they are putting out. >> jean casarez was the first correspondent on the scene and she joins us once again from new
12:03 am
york. and jean, you know, learning now there is another device. what are you hearing? >> we're continually hearing new information and what we now have gotten is that the police are investigating a suspicious device. very important word there, device. and it's at 28th street and 5th avenue in new york city which is about five blocks from where i am and i am on 23rd street, the site of the original explosion. they have not confirmed this was a device at this point. it was an explosion but the crime scene is being processed over my right shoulder. i'm sure it will be processed for a long time, hours to come. because it happened in or around a dumpster. and we do know that 29 victims, because of that explosion, 24 of them were taken to the hospital, wounds from metal and glass. one puncture wound and as you said some are being released
12:04 am
now. one we heard was in very serious condition. so we need to see what goes on from there. but it wasn't much longer after this explosion that we heard about at 27th, between 6th and 7th, 27th street, there was a secondary device that was found. we later learned that was a pressure cooker and pictures of that have surfaced. we do know and have confirmed they have taken that pressure cooker to a safe location to investigate that at this point. but now we see and -- vehicles are still coming in here. right now we have a -- this is the fire department. so you see this is a continual situation here. some vehicles leave, others come. but i will tell you that the federal government is here, the state government and new york city's counterterrorism unit although the mayor says that new
12:05 am
york city has not been given a terror threat and there is nothing at this point to say this is terrorism. but all of the anti-terrorism units are on scene tonight. i'm jean casarez back to you. >> when you talk about the apparatus that is in place tonight. you have the investigators within nypd and counterterrorism officials. we had on tom fuentes. you have officials saying it was intentional but also saying there is no nexus to terrorism. we know there was an explosion and a second device that was discovered at 27th street and at 28th, this third device, as you point out. so are you hearing anything more from investigators about what's going on with this? >> no. they're just out and about and all here. there are police officers on the corner. i think a lot of people are
12:06 am
surprised that a conclusion was made so soon with an investigation that was absolutely unfolding at the time whether it be a law enforcement investigation, a criminal investigation, things change. and it is difficult to make conclusions initially because many are saying that it puts someone in the corner because they've concluded something is as it is and it may turn out to be exactly the opposite. but at this point, as we said, a third device that is suspicious was found five blocks away where i'm standing right here which is where the initial explosion took place, right behind my right shoulder. >> jean, quickly, this is natalie. any more warnings to people who live in that area, then? i mean there was a text that went out earlier to tell people to stay away from the windows. but what about new yorkers who live in that area? we now have several blocks with,
12:07 am
perhaps, dangerous situations. >> especially with the third device. >> exactly. for the official explosion they searched the buildings by the dumpster or ask anyone to evacuate. but it was amazing. on your cell phone we got the emergency alerts at the same time and the cell phones are buzzing saying if you live in the vicinity of 27th street between 6th and 7th stay away from your windows. we got another alert saying that the device that was found has been removed from the area and that it's safe. that they do not have to stay away from windows at this point. but we are getting these alerts. first time we have gotten this particular type of alerts. but i think it shows you the gravity or the alleged gravity of the situation. >> is that for the third device or -- just clarifying, the
12:08 am
alert? >> the third device we have not got an alert for yet. they call it suspicious and a device and they call it that they are investigating it at 28th street and 5th avenue in new york city. >> if you learn more about that, thanks for all your hard work the past few hours. >> you're welcome. >> and again, police have widened the perimeter of the crime scene after finding multiple suspicious devices. >> this is a fast evolving investigation. and our richard quest has been there for every step of it and has more on the development from his corner there in new york. >> it was roughly an hour and a half after the 23rd street device exploded that we became aware of activity four blocks further north on 27th street and
12:09 am
7th afternoon. it was confirmed that a device had been found on 27th street. a picture was released with a pressure cooler with wires coming out and attached to a cell phone. we have never been told what was in that pressure cooker. shortly after that we saw a bomb containment unit of the police department arrive which is a large metal structure which was taken down the road and we believe that's where the pressure cooker was put into. and subsequently, the suggestion is, it has been taken away to be defused and analyzed. as for the scene, it was a warm evening, the beginning of fall. the streets were packed. people enjoying the evening. and, frankly, no one can
12:10 am
understand why these two streets, 23rd and 27th, streets likes any other in new york. certainly not streets of any great significance or importance why they should be the ones that should have been the targets. richard quest, 27th street in manhattan. >> within the last hour we got another street now. that they're watching. 28th and 5th a suspicious device has been found. that is new information in the past 30 minutes. >> let's now bring in steve moore via skype in los angeles. a former fbi supervisory agent. we know a pressure cooker was discovered and now a focus on a third device at 28th street.
12:11 am
again, you know, no nexus to terrorism according to the new york mayor. it was intentional according to authorities. tom fuentes is having a hard time squaring the circle. i ask you the same thing. what do you think? >> i think this is going to be terrorism of some type whether it's international terrorism or islamic terrorist group or isis, we don't know. but this is not some type of criminal activity. this is terrorism. i -- the other -- i think that the key to this is going to be finding out why these devices didn't go off if indeed they were ieds. >> i want to make clear with our viewers in the u.s. and around the world as you give your great insight you feel like it could be terrorism. investigators are not saying
12:12 am
that to be the case yet. but the nypd investigators are on this and will learn more throughout the night. >> why do you think that the mayor would come out and say this was an intentional act but right now we don't have a connection to terrorism? and since he's made that announcement there has been another device and another device. why do you think he would draw that conclusion so early? >> if i were the mayor i would have said the same thing. right now there is no concrete nexus to terrorism. i'm giving my opinion on here based on all my experience. the investigators may believe it will eventually become terrorism. but right now. just the appearance of it is not enough to say that it is connected to terrorism. >> i think it's interesting that you do point out we have a second twice that didn't go off. apparently something is being
12:13 am
investigated and it did not explode as well. >> let's talk about the device, the image that we've seen. and if we can show our viewers, you see the wiers from the pressure cooker and a cell phone attacked. what do you make of this and its level of fist cation? >> it's not overly sophisticated but certainly it's going to be effective. all the parts are there to make it happen if there's a battery in the cell phone you have enough use there to ignite. what is interesting to me is the -- if i heard correctly, the bias in new jersey this morning with three pipe bombs where only one went off, the bomb -- the ied that went off earlier, that may have gone off low order rather than high order. you can have it detonate but not
12:14 am
officially. and this could lead one to believe that maybe this person was building ieds the first time and really didn't do a good job of it and it's possible that these simply were duds. they didn't go off. >> and quickly, steve, this is a hard question to answer quickly, but what are the tracks of this investigation? our reporter jean casarez just saw another vehicle coming in. counterterrorism units have been spotted. they have a video with a suspicious person on it. give us a canvas of how new york is going after and investigating this right now. >> all the videos on 5th avenue all the way up and down from 20th to 30th you are going to have so much video out there, you are going to find this person. it won't be a long investigation. >> we thank you souch. we know you are an exert and
12:15 am
we'll talk with you again. >> on the same night as the new york explosion another act of violence. a suspect is dead after going on a stabbing spree in a shopping mall in the state of minnesota. >> multiple victims have been wounded. eight were transported to the hospital. witnesses say that the suspect entered the shopping mall and made a reference to allah and asked at least one person if he was islamic before attacking him. the unnamed suspect had two encounters with police in 2009 and 2010. we'll continue to break you developments from new york. you're watching live coverage on cnn. we'll be right back. forward it's not an anti aging face cream it's realizing beauty, doesn't stop at my chin. roc's formula adapts to delicate skin areas. my fine lines here, visibly reduced in 4 weeks.

12:19 am
. welcome back to our breaking news coverage of an explosion in new york city. i'm natalie along with george with you again. a device found a few streets from the explosion appears to be a pressure cooker.
12:20 am
that has been removed. law enforcement officials have not said what was inside it it it had dark colored wiring coming out of the top along with duct tape. they are now investigating a third suspicious device found at 28th and 5th. >> according to the mayor of new york, bill de blasio. he says that the explosion appears to be intentional. at least 29 people were wounded because of it. a surveillance video shows a person near where the explosion occurred. and they are trying to figure out if that person was connected to what happened there. the united nations security council wrapped up an emergency session a few hours ago. russia called the meeting after a coalition air strike that killed dozens of people in syria. >> the united states has said
12:21 am
that strike was a mistake and they apologized for it and they stopped it immediately after russian officials informed them of their error. they thought they were going after isis. but a spokeswoman for russia says it suggests the u.s. is defending isis. we've heard that before. that brought a swift response from the united states. >> a fierce and bitter war of wards between the u.s. and russia saturday night at u.n. headquarters in new york. russia called for an emergency security council meeting. samantha power says the u.s. regrets the loss of life. but then blasted moscow. >> this said, even by russia's standards, tonight's stunt, a stunt replete with moralism and
12:22 am
grand standing is uniquely cynical and hypocritical. >> she spoke while the russia ambassador was taking to the security council. the russia ambassador came to meet the media outraged at what he had heard. >> all my years in the united nations, that is over ten years and in all my years in international life i've never seen -- which is over 40 years -- i've never seen such an american display of american heavy handedness as today. as i was talking in the security council the ambassador chose to talk to you. >> diplomats said the real show was before the cameras. the u.s. and russia envoys seemed to want to keep the agreement in place but there are bruised tensions.
12:23 am
>> why are we having this meeting tonight? it's a diversion from what is happening on the ground in syria. >> i don't know what the next step will be or the next move we can expect. unfortunately from what i heard the ambassador say she walked into the room, this is not a good omen. >> reporter: this appeared to be particularly edgy. the general assembly annual debate begins monday and syria is a major topic. let's go to the rejgion fora live report. ben wedeman has been reporting in this region and on this war. and samantha power not mincing words there. and the russians showing their anger at the united states. but the good news is that it
12:24 am
seems like both countries are supporting the cessation of hostilities. what are you learning there? >> they do support it but the cessation of hostilities is looking very frail at the moment. i was in touch with fred pleitgen, our correspondent in aleppo. he said overnight he heard a lot of explosions. the fighting still seems to be going on despite the rhetorical support from both the united states and russia. according to the ceasefire agreement that was worked out, what was supposed to happen is that once the fighting stopped, humanitarian aid was to go into parts of aleppo. if they worked well, the united states and russia were to set up a joint implementation center
12:25 am
which is intended to coordinate air strikes by the russians and u.s. led coalitions against isis and al qaeda in syria. this is all up in the area at the moment and that is not for lack of a desperately needed on the ground. but if the united states and russians cannot agree on this ceasefire, then it doesn't look too good as far as the future goes, natalie? >> thanks so much, ben wedeman live for us in istanbul, turkey. witnesses from the explosion in new york tell cnn what they saw and what they heard. we'll return to our breaking news story from new york, next. r take it all off? every kiss-proof, cry-proof, stay-proof look? neutrogena® makeup remover does. it erases 99% of your most stubborn makeup with one towelette. need any more proof than that?

12:29 am
this is cnn breaking news. >> welcome back to our viewers here in the united states and around the world. we're live for you here and continue to bring you the latest on the story in new york. >> 29 people wounded after an explosion in new york's chelsea neighborhood and surveillance video from a nearby gym shows what happened there. this obtained by msnbc. you see people running outside on the street and investigators say they may have found video showing a person nearby where the blast occurred trying to figure out if that individual is somehow connected to that explosion. >> we haven't heard who might be behind it until we got that news in the past hour. >> a few blocks down from where this happened, authorities found this suspicious device.
12:30 am
sources say it was connected to a cell phone with wires attached. new york police are investigating another suspicious device found two blocks away on 28th street. >> a busy night in new york city. the unga just about to get started and this is fashion week as well. >> always a busy time in new york but especially right now. >> a lot of people on the streets. 29 people injured. thankfully no one killed. we know at least one person in critical condition. rachel crane has the latest from outside bellevue hospital for us. >> george and natalie, nine of the 29 blast victims were transported here to bellevue hospital. hospital officials tell us that many of the victims at this point have been released and none had life threatening
12:31 am
injuries. we spoke to a couple that were victims of the blast as they were being discharged. they said they were driving their car in the area when the explosion occurred. a's when their car was lifted up by the force of the blast and the left side was damaged. they were both transported here to bellevue and they said they are lucky to be alive. i can tell you what i remember. driving a car and i felt an explosion and the car just tilted over half way and came back down. next thing you know i'm in an ambulance. >> and what do you remember? >> everything was so sudden and fast. it was more of a shock. >> how are you doing now? >> pain and thraumatized.
12:32 am
i was that close to not seeing my son again. that was the scariest part a for me. >> he was worried about not seeing his son again and worried for his life. hospital officials told us that several of the nine blast victims had been released from the hospital. we spoke to another young woman who said she was in shock and just wanted to go home and go to sleep but it all happened so fast she could hardly recall it. we are seeing a heightened security presence outside bellevue hospital. heavily armed officers checking every ambulance coming to the hospital, checking those ambulances by the armed guards, clearly all of new york, including bellevue hospital on heightened alert. natalie and george? >> interesting developments.
12:33 am
it's amazing when you hear people talk about the explosion lifting their car up. you have people who have walked out of the hobbs there tonight. do you know anything about any other victims who were taken elsewhere or the person who is in critical? >> we have not learned any a details about the person in critical condition. they were not transported here to bellevue. we do know that. as far as other victims here we spoke to three of the nine victims. two of which you hear from yourself and the other young woman i spoke of and the hospital officials telling us that most of the nine blast victims have been released from the hospital so clearly their injuries not too series. >> nine of the people, most of them being released.
12:34 am
>> we have had an explosion, two other devices that didn't go off. and we have also one person in serious condition. and now this third device they're looking into. we're staying in touch with investigators on that. we showed you earlier sound from new york mare bill de blasio. we want to les you hear what he had to say. take a listen. >> there's no evidence at this point of a terror connection to this incident. this is preliminary information and something we will be investigating carefully. but there is no evidence at this point of a terror connection. i also want to affirm that based on what we know at this hour there is no specific connection to the incident in new jersey. it's too early to talk about that more. i want to say broadly there is no specific and credible threat
12:35 am
against new york city at this point in time from any terror organization. as we analyze what happened here we are doing it against a backdrop of no specific and credible threat at this point. but we want to be clear, the initial informations this was an intentional act. we have have more to say in the coming hours. but we do believe it was an intentional act. i want to ensure all new yorkers that the nypd and all other agencies are at full alert and our anti-terror capacity is at full alert. and other key units, the streak response group are all on alert and deals with the situation and being vigilant. and we have in this city the
12:36 am
most advanced anti-terror capacity of any city in this country and the largest police force all ready to ensure our safety. i want to be clear, whatever the cause or intention here, new yorkers will not be intimidated or let anyone change who we are or how we go about our lives and we have a number of key agencies making sure we will be safe. >> mayor de blasio, several hours ago. when he mentioned the incident in new jersey. earlier saturday, an explosion went off in a garbage can in seaside park, new jersey right before a charity run for the u.s. marine corps. police found three devices resembling pipe bombs, one detonated. it was clearly meant to disrupt
12:37 am
that event. and also want to point out that was news conference at 11:00 p.m. and we have not heard as far as official reports other than that suspicious device. no more news conferences since 11:00 p.m. that is four and a half hours ago. >> and the mayor in that news conference pointed out these are not connected from what they're seeing right now. that news conference happened at 11. and we're hearing from witnesses about what they experienced when the explosion took place in chelsea. and it's shocking what they're saying. >> it's just a busy night on the streets. one man heard the blast even though he was several blocks away. >> well, it sounds like when you hear the metal steel plates, an
12:38 am
inch thick and flattened, falls straight on the ground. >> where were you? >> 23rd and 10th. >> i was three blocks away. but it sounded like a block away. >> what was going through your head -- >> that there's an explosion and then you thought -- you get concerned about gas explosions. i lived through 9/11 and there was a concern for humanity. >> the first responders coming so the blinking lights. a lot of police and as they started, fire trucks, emergency vehicles. undercover emergency vehicles. i suppose to an ambulance man and he goes we're still investigating. >> was it chaos? >> it's pretty calm. there's a lot of people around
12:39 am
the corner. because there are still vehicles, surprisingly. there was many vehicles coming down 23rd street they had to clear out. i just saw the first police car block everybody on 21st street. then you see the people congregating on the corner. >> are you concerned for your safety knowing this happened three blocks away from you? >> officially, yes. you always have that concern because you don't know if it is three blocks away or 100 feet away. and you just -- you don't know. we have been talking about this third possible device as we learn from investigators about an hour ago, or maybe a little less than that. but we have got an update and i put this out on social. we got an update from investigators that that third device turned out to be nothing.
12:40 am
they think it may be garbage but you get a sense that the investigators are on high alert looking at everything. the second device, this pressure cooker in an on secure area. they are not taking anything for granted. >> the third device doesn't exist. >> the u.s. president and both candidates are also aware of what is happening right now. >> hillary clinton learned about the explosion while at the congressional black caucus gala in washington on saturday. she spoke with reporters after her plane landed in new york. >> i've been briefed about a bedroomings in new york and new jersey and the attack in minnesota. obviously we need to do everything we can to support our first responders, also to pray
12:41 am
for the victims. we have to let this investigation unfold. we've been in touch with various officials, including the mayor's office in new york. to learn what they are discovering as they conduct this investigation. and i'll have more to say about it when we know some facts. >> that's hillary clinton on the plane and now u.s. republican presidential candidate donald trump also speaking about what happened in new york. >> he just learned about it right before he took the stage to speak at a rally. here's what he said at that campaign rally in colorado. >> i must tell you that just before i got off the plane, a bomb went off in new york and nobody knows exactly what is going on. but we are living in a time, we better get very tough, folks. >> important to point out at this point it is unclear the nature of that explosion. we'll continue to learn more
12:42 am
from investigators. we'll have more ahead for you, please stay tuned.

12:46 am
suspicious device a couple blocks away from the original explosion. that device has been removed. it's a pressure cooker rigged with wires and a cell phone. >> investigators will be determines what was in it, who could have built that device and also determining the level of fist cation. is this something that everyone can do. >> it's not hard according to our experts to do this type of thing. >> we are following other news in the united states, the race for u.s. president. hillary clinton and the president barack obama were featured guests at a gala in washington on saturday. >> and mr. obama who took a bow with his wife, the first lady, delivered one of the most impassioned speeches in his presidentity urging black voters not to turn their back on
tv-commercial
12:47 am
hillary clinton. jeff zeleny was there. >> president obama delivering a rallying cry to black voters saturday night in a speech in washington. acknowledging that he is not on the ballot but his legacy is. he delivered a blastering attack against drup drup and said it would be an insult to his legacy. >> tolerance is on the ballot, democracy is on the ballot. after historic turnout in 2008 and 2012, i will consider it a personal insult, an insult to my legacy if this community lets down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election. you want to give me a good send off, go vote! >> reporter: the president has
12:48 am
criticized donald trump before but not in these terms. he talked about his birth certificate but he talked about more and said that black voters need to rally to hillary clinton's side. and hillary clinton was also at the stage and came to the president's aid talking about his birth certificate. >> even when hateful nonsense is thrown their way, barack, michelle, their two beautiful daughters have represented our country with class, grace, and integrity. mr. president, not only do we know you are an american, you're a great american. >> reporter: president obama and hillary clinton talked backstage. there's no question he is going to be one of the biggest components in her final strategy

12:50 am
millennials. but president barack obama made it very clear that he believes that if black voters support him and want to see the work he has done continue the only option is to support hillary clinton. >> both the president and hillary clinton talking about this issue, the birther topic that donald trump says he solved. how gant will that be for the clinton campaign? trump is gaining. how significant could this issue be for hillary clinton to focus in on. >> i think what we saw hillary clinton do last night responded to this issue this past weekend. it's painted as something that is a part of a larger issue with the trump campaign and that is according to clinton a candidate who does not have a high view of dersity and a sensitivity to
12:51 am
issue that affect people on the outside or the outskirts of our communities. she wants to make it clear the birther comments is just one of many things that the voters should be concerned about. >> trump maintained the birther issue for five years. and then blaming it on hillary clinton saying she started the birther situation, but the again point of fact that is not accurate. but ewe casino as donald trump has sate the words that the president of the united states was born in the united states. does this open him up to this voting block that he will need? >> following his statement there was a press conference from the congressional black caucus and the members made it clear that they want an apology and
12:52 am
explanation and this to be the first step to ongoing conversations about how donald trump can better interac with black voters. it doesn't appear that it will be receive but there does seem to be an opportunity for more engagement that could benefit donald trump in terms of getting more black votes. >> eugene, we always appreciate your insight. >> this is cnn breaking news coverage. we'll continue to follow the breaking news out of new york.
