5:00 am
new day, it is monday september 2nd, this is tonight's first presidential debate is going to be. history in the make and there is no question about it. so much on the line for clinton and trump. we have 13 hours. where is our clock? that was 13 even, when that clock hit 00, we'll never see before. clinton and trump one on one. you will have a front row seat on history as we do here. tonight's debate the most consequential in modern history. this race is locked in a virtual tie, election day is just 43 days away and of course, the stakes could not be higher. lets begin our debate coverage with cnn's jason carol, how is it looking, jason?
5:01 am
>> well, they have just been testing some of the music here and getting some practice sessions in. the kacandidates have been practicing in. different way to take trump, for example, not following the traditional path or not holding mock debates as we have seen candidates do in the past. his adviser is saying what he want to do is review his issues with his advisers. the candidate is not going to be robotic and scripted and he will be nimble and resilience. >> clinton is following a traditional path. she had been holding mock debates and working late in the night last night and practicing with one of her long time adviser, long time mate, he's known for having a combat style. you can imagine both campaigns going forward and manage
5:02 am
expectations ahead of tonight. >> i am very concerned that donald trump will be graded on a curve just because he does not fly off the handle in the middle of this debate dos not mean he's prepared for being the president of the united states. >> that's pretty obvious if you read many of the reports or turn on any station at any point of the day. >> so chris, a few details about tonight of some of what's going to be happening on the stage was decided by both campaigns coming together and other things decided by coin toss. clinton will be on the podium on stage left and trump is right. that was decided by a coin toss and clinton will get the first question, she will have two-minutes to respond and trump will have two-minutes to weigh in as well. that is also decided on a coin
5:03 am
toss. 100 million people is expected to tune in. >> oh boy, oh boy, jason carol, what a moment this is going to be. it is not just a first but it is a first time that we have seen trump and clinton. the polls is so noted up. that's the average of the last five national survey shows this. clinton with a 44% to 41% lead. that's neck and neck once you build in all the different s submissio submissions. in colorado, trump is edging out and clinton among likely voters. clinton has a slight lead in pennsylvania, that's huge for the consequenstates >> what can we expect from hillary clinton tonight? brian fallon, it is great to see
5:04 am
you, how are you feeling? >> great. >> thanks for having me. this is an important night for the campaign. hillary clinton is looking forward to this. it gets harder and harder to get through. clinton wants to take the opportunity tonight and talk about what she's doing as president. she invited a view guests here to join her. the people like anastasia, the young woman where she spoke last week and meanwhile you have donald trump who goes around and insult reporters with disabilities. we'll talk about that and how clinton is fighting for reporters like anastasia. >> i don't think she's going let it go and the moderator should either. donald trump is somebody who lies 75% at the time. he was dubbed liar of the year and this past week, you had a range of media outlets looking
5:05 am
at his statements calculated that he lies every three minutes. >> they do not think that it is the moderator's responsibility to call and they're dpoing to let the candidates fact-check each other. does clinton has a there you go again moment. >> i don't know about that. there is enough lies that donald trump tells consistency that everyone should be able to call him out. even the observers and reporters tonight watching or grading the two candidates performance, we know he likes to lie about the iraq war and his support about libya and who started birthism and on any different number of issues and he tells them so frequent. he cannot possibly be given a passing grade if he repeats those lies. >> donald trump's supporters,
5:06 am
feels that mrs. clinton has not been straightforward about her e-mail. does she have a ready answer that it is concise that it comes up tonight. >> she's apologized for it. i think she will do the same if it comes up tonight. on the other hand is a bunch of questions that donald trump has not answered. there is a lot of questions on clinton. she's been widely available to reporters and taking questions on the plane. donald trump has gone with a full two months without taking questions. there is all questions raised about his business holdings and whether he will put his assets on a true blind. >> just the last week, we learned that a trump campaign adviser had meetings with russian government officials that's being looked at by u.s.
5:07 am
intelligent agencies. all of that is going to come up. >> we heard her saying what would ronald reagan think about donald trump's sort of complimentary take on vladimir putin. >> donald trump apologizes for russian's policies. his policies are in alignment with russia. he thinks vladimir putin is a stronger leader than ours. he actually had hundreds of millions of dollars investments in russia. sounds like she will be bringing that up tonight. >> i think it is a fair conversation.
5:08 am
>> philep has been playing donald trump, how has he been playing donald trump? >> philep is someone that has known hillary clinton for a long time. for all this talk for which that trump is showing up tonight, i think we are convinced seeing trump number two of a kellyanne conway -- trying to come in desperately and seem presidential. i don't think those should be enough for this to be categorized a win for donald trump. he needs to show seriousness on policies and present detailed plans and protect us from the threat that is we face from isis and avoid all those lies he likes to tell so much. >> i know this is your biggest fear. you fear that donald trump is going to be dprgraded on a curv. if he looks presidential then
5:09 am
what? what will happen tomorrow that you would hate to see if he was graded by a curve. what will that look like? donald tru donald trump has shown us who he is. this is somebody that does not have the temperament. we cannot trust him with weapons. he insulted mexicans americans and wom and women. >> but, that cannot be the standard, the american people expect for more. >> all right, thank you so much to help preview it with us. obviously, all eyes tonight. >> have a great day. >> the mayor of charlotte, north carolina, lifting a midnight curfew one day after the video was released of the deadly
5:10 am
shooting of keith lamont scott. that video has raised many questions. live with brenda with more. >> reporter: this is one of the reasons that scott's family wanted this video to be released. it shows that scott was not acting aggressively towards authority. police maintained the fact that he was break ing the law and that's why deadly force was needed. >> scott's widow releasing the final moments before he was fatally shot by police officers. >> he does not have a gun. insisting that scott was not armed when officers opened fire. >> keith, keith, don't you do it. [ bleep ]. >> did you shoot him? did you shoot him? charlotte police released their
5:11 am
own video a day later including this dashcam footage showing an officer in plain close with his weapon drawn. you can see scott exits his suv and begins walking backward towards police and scott is shot at four times by officer vincent who was off camera at the time. >> there is no definitive evidence in this video as to whether or not there is an object in his hand and if there is, what that object is. >> made public by body camera footage from an officer racing to the scene. moments later, he's lying on the ground with five officers on verging on him. none of the three videos show clearly whether scott was armed. >> you have to put all the pieces together. we interviewed a lot of people and consistent themes were the facts. >> police presenting photographs
5:12 am
of a handgun and holster and marijuana cigarette that officers said they recovered at the scene. >> demonstrators swarming bank of america on sunday and activists boycotting in protest of scott's death. >> reporter: protests over the weekend were peaceful. that's what prompted the city to lift its curfew that was in place on thursday. tonight, a sit-in is scheduled, calling for the resignation of charlotte's mayor and police chief. allyson. thank you, so much for the update. we are talking debate strategy, so what he says trump should do tonight to defeat his rival. >> that's why he lost right there. >> that moment. when you ache and ha slept... you're not you. tylenol® pm relieves pain and helps you fall fast asleep and stay asleep. we give you a better night. you're a better you all day.
5:13 am
tylenol®. before it became a medicine, it was an idea. a wild "what-if." so scientists went to work. they examined 87 different protein structures and worked for 12 long years. there were thousands of patient volunteers and the hope of millions. and so after it became a medicine, someone who couldn't be cured, could be.

most anticipated presidential debate in modern history. hillary clinton, a candidate with plenty of debate experience is going to faceoff with donald trump who'll be in his first one-on-one debate. what could go wrong. joining us now, cnn's commentator who ran against clinton back in 2000s and he
5:17 am
helps to prepare clinton's team before tonight's debate. there is not two people on earth who can understand and give us insights like you can. rick, let me start wu. there was that moment when you cross the stage. >> i remember, i remember. >> it must annoy you that people keep on playing this moment time and again. you were seen as the optic as too aggressive. >> right. >> do you want to watch it? >> lets remind everyone. >> well, i would be happy when you give me the sign letter. >> well, we'll shake on it. >> no, i want your signature because i think everybody wants you to see that you sign something that you said you are for. why don't you do something important for america while america is looking at new york. why don't you show some leader
5:18 am
shirp because ship because it goes to trust and character. >> what is donald trump learn from that moment? >> stay at the podium. >> number two is these moments can define an entire debate so you got a 90 minute debate tonight and 90 minute debate with clinton. what people saw were the 90 second of this moment that stayed in their memory. >> don't be too aggressive. is that the message for you. >> be genuine. i look at this and looks that i am totally out of character and it makes me cringe because i think about who i am. i remember my adviser, again, something that both trump and clinton should be thinking about it. you cannot be aggressive enough. that meant well and they said
5:19 am
they like you better and they think you got more relevant experience. >> be true to yourself, incredibly important. >> there are two debates. the debates that' that'll happe tonight and the debate that people will haeear about tomorr and days after. t >> rick has a good piece online on cnn with the advise that he has for donald trump going into debate tonight. it is good, it is worth the read. one of the things that you have the benefit now is time. that was almost 20 years ago. i play ball with rick and we have known each other for a long time. he learns from his mistakes. that's not a given with donald trump. what do you know about him in terms of if people come to him
5:20 am
and say, don't do this, this does not work for you. sometimes he will do it again anyway. what is that about? >> well, i spent hundreds and hundreds of hours with donald trump. the donald trump of 30 years ago is the donald trump of today. he's a intimidating swagger presence. he will, if he is himself as rick suggests he ought to be, that would be good nofor hillar. that he will be doubling down on any situation on which he's challenged about some misstatements he made. three different media outlets found he made an average of one lie every three second when he was out and front. i hope he is like himself. my worry is that he will find the capacity in this 90 minute
5:21 am
to play a role that he's not here. >> tony, what do you think this is, what do you share about his achille's heel is. >> what i feel about donald trump is that she has an opportunity to simply put in fr front of him the in defensible things that he says. if he starts to speak and say lie at the same rate, her best response is to burn dog him and stay the course and relentlessly although quietly and calmly going after those lies. this is a long period of time and he will not be able to live on one sentence or sound bite as he usually does if he stays tshe
5:22 am
course. >> i do think there is a prize fight element to it. the candidates are never at each other the way they are. just to get back to the idea of fact-check. trump averages one falsehood every three minute. you narrowed those down successfully. just so you know, that's the job that somebody does tonight. so rick, what did you learn about hillary clinton in term of how she is in those situations? >> hillary clinton is going to be prepared and she's going to spend a lot of time on policies. trump should not get in a nuts and bolts ted and ted about policy but he still needs to be able to establish some bona fide that he's around policy. >> for her, she needs to be aware of the fact that the debate is about the head and the
5:23 am
heart. the heart is expecting with the audience. her issue is whether she could smile a little bit or showing some warmth or maybe tell a small joke. something that warms her up. i think that's really what her challenge is is whether she could do that and for her not to appear as though she's getting out of kraryle clark character. when i saw the bernie sanders' contest when she started to yell at bernie and get amped up. it did not work well on her. i would stay away from that. make your point and stay determined. in a way that seems in offensive and not past where -- >> i would say follow on chris' analogy, i would say the classic flow like a butterfly, sting like a bee. she has to keep stinging this man and she has to get him to
5:24 am
the point where he begins to double down on the things that are in defensible and that'll affect the next morning profoundly. she can come across as someone who cares. i don't believe he can come across as someone who cares. the question is, does he have a soul or a heart, that's what people need to be watching for. >> tony and rich, it is great to have both of your in siesights . our other story here is the police video and they are raising more questions than answer. was keith threscott a threat to officers? what's happening in the community and we'll speak to the community about the story ahead.

i we worked with pg&eof to save energy because wenie. wanted to help the school. they would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didn't cut off the light. the teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. so they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights! those three young ladies were teaching the whole school about energy efficiency. we actually saved $50,000. and that's just one school, two semesters, three girls. together, we're building a better california.

. folks, we have some breaking news for you right now. we are following this in houston. it is an active shooter situation. we are looking at live picture right now from an areal chopper point of view. this is a shopping center, a strip mall we are told.
5:29 am
law enforcement is asking people in the houston area to stay inside their homes. police believe that the scene is contained. meaning that they believe the shooter is down. you can see it is still an active scene. there are details coming into our newsroom right now. c cnn's affiliate says there maybe multiple victims. >> you see fire trucks there because those are emts. first responders will be in the area and fire department and municipality here is houston. they put out an emergency alert that says houston police department is responding to an active shooter situation in a shopping center. at this time, the shooting scene is believed to be contained. residents is still kept free and they are squaring off the area. what's going on inside that mall
5:30 am
could be much more than what you are seeing outside. cnn will stay on this as we get information about casualties and why this happens. we'll take you through it. another situation we are monitoring this morning is in charlotte, protesters vowing to continue to mark the streets demanding justice for keith scott's death. however, we still don't have a clear idea, not even close to what actually happened even though charlotte police released their body dashcam and revealed a gun was recovered at the scene. joining us now is amir maze, reverend, thank you for joining us. the emotions of people are going up and down and the rain has done more than anything they have learn so far to quiet this situation, at least over night. where are people in terms of believing what happened here was justified?
5:31 am
>> thank you for having me. people are frustrated and psychologically traumatized by what they have seen about the murders of killings of black men. a lot of people are trying to justify or minimize the pain that a lot of african-americans are feeling. we are seeing video cam and police dashcam and we have seen it on iphones and all types of media, where innocent black men are getting gunned down in the streets. that's causes more pain and frustration. i was out here on the front line and i understand the psychological effect until my wife called me, honey, would you please come home, in tears. members were coming up to me and crying on my shoulders and said
5:32 am
pastor, i was nervous when the police got behind me and i didn't know if i was going live or not. we are feeling the pain in this community. >> in the instant case, things are done the right way and in the interest of transparency, it was slow but eventually charlotte put out the video. there are still a lot of questions there. one of them seems to be getting a lot of attention. i am not sure why. the idea of whether or not the vick h victim had a gun. you hear the policeman on one of the video released saying gun, gun, gun. you know the police came out and said that the gun was recovered. do people not believe the police, they don't believe the gun was there? >> there is so many racial disparage and distrust of african-american community verses the police department, over the course of history, we
5:33 am
have seen guns have been planted and evidence have been planted. many african-americans do not trust our law enforcement because of their lack of transparency and their lack of honesty and i am here to say that all police officers are not bad but there are a few bad apples that destroys the bunch. the frustration here is we found one story, he had no gun and the other story he had a gun but he was not a immediate threat and now the report that he had just a holster. >> i wrote a book even over coming frustration, chapter 2, is how do you cover come frustration, don't minimize my pain or telling me any negative reality is not real. that's what the police force have told us and the community have told us that what we are going through is a fairy tale, it is a negative reality and we cannot kill our black men.
5:34 am
what does it mean to be a immediate threat? what seems to be an immediate threat? >> well, that is exactly the question that hopefully the justice system will decide and what we all want is the transparency of that process. that's why we stay on the story. reverend, thank you very much forgiving us your perspective on "new day." >> and closing i hope the community is standing down and be peace. >> an important message when emotions are high. thank you very much. before we spoke to the reverend, we took you to houston to tell you about an active shooting situation. the situation is controlled. it is not easy to tell because the shooting happened in a large mall in houston. this is live picture from there coming from an affiliate of y r ours, kprc. you see a lot of firefighters,
5:35 am
we are getting word that the gunman is down. who that person is or if there is more than one and why this was done. those are all opened questions. most important is right now was who else was injured inside there. we'll get you information as soon as it comes in. lets take a quick break. stay with cnn. >> he's unqualified to be president. >> hillary clinton lacks >> the scams and the frauds. hillary clinton evaded justice. >> he clearly has something to hide. guess what guys, i switched to sprint. sprint? i'm hearing good things about the network. all the networks are great now. we're talking within a 1% difference in reliability of each other. and, sprint saves you 50%

5:39 am
. one of the few instances where the hype cannot be exaggerated. this moment tonight, clinton and trump for the first time
5:40 am
one-on-one, it could be the biggest moment in this election. the three topics for tonight. america's direction, achieving prosperity and securing america, also known as everything. how are they going to take us on. joining us now former clinton's official, kirsten powell and grandholm. so the understanding of what i am putting out there, you cannot over height this power. this is huge and it is the battle. after tonight, nothing will be the same. >> no, i think everybody is very excited about this for good reasons. the question is who's going to show up in terms of donald trump. that's going to determine a lot
5:41 am
of what happened so if he shows up and he's boring and he does not get into real arguments with her, he's going to walk away and people are going say he won. there is this expectations that he's going to be bombastic. that's going to be up to clinton if she's going to go after him and jab him. if he's going to be disciplined enough to attack her then it will be an exciting event. >> exciting theory. john, that leads me to you yours. tonight, you believe that donald trump's goal is to win over women. >> look at this. this is the super bowl and this is chris cuomo's birthday. if they can find andy kaufman, you are exactly right. this is donald trump's
5:42 am
opportunity to talk to women who voted for mit romney who have college education and living in places like denver or pittsburgh, he's going to tailor every message for them. he wants to look like a world's leader and look like someone who's capable of being a president. >> we have not seen him in this position before, not just the weight of expectations but just him and clinton. one-on-one. there is no fading off and getting a break and listen to other fools fight. you and her, one-on-one. it changes the dynamic, you know? >> absolutely. there are things that's baked in the cake that's good for trump here and the theme that you laid out, most voters don't feel secure and prosperous. her advantage is she's experienced and she's done about 70 of these. she's over prepared generally.
5:43 am
she's probably got lists in her mind of attack points and he, i think is likely to wing it. we'll have to see, she has one job tonight is make him look dumb. i don't think it matters if he's a bully or a liar or a fraud. she has to make him look inadequately prepared and experienced. he on the other hand has one job is to make her look more of the same. if i were him, i would repeat the same line over and over again. she just does not get it. that's his job. she has her job. we'll see if they'll go off their sort of marks but that's where i would come from if i were both of them. >> governor, if you in fact, believe he's a could wantnter p and if he's going to provoke the bear tonight. >> i agree with kirsten.
5:44 am
he's going to show up and trying to be respectful and if that goes on too long, she has to scratch where he most response. heather ha he's an in secure person. there are so much materials there. she goes after his compentency. that's going to get him riled up. people are talking about the number of lies he issued and who's job it is. it is not fair that she's going to be correcting every single falsehood that he says because she will be wasting her time talking about him rather than presenting a positive vision. i do think there is a responsibility on the part of
5:45 am
the moderator and all who's watching and commenting afterwards to call him on those lies. because i think that they, the fact checkers will be out there and forward but nobody is reading the political fact article. >> not to mention, for hillary clinton and this is why i say this, she should not go after the lying. she's not a credible vessel to call someone out on trus trust wortniness. >> that's just so wrong that it ticks me up. >> you should tell her that. >> you look at the statements that have been fact checked. she gets wrong. yes, it is bad 23% of the time. he gets wrong 78% of the time. she's considered along with barack obama, among all of those of the fact-check.
5:46 am
so really, do you feel -- >> my point is, these are two of the least trusted politicians to run for president. >> yes. >> because republicans have been doing a really good job. >> she has lied on public record. she's lied a lot. >> this is not the area that i would go to if i am her with these records high. >> i would go on his lack of experience. >> there she actually can. >> i think there are a couple of key lies that she cannot let go. you know the lies, and if she started the birth movement. she got to calm on that. >> sure, sure, i agree. >> john, going on the attack on him as a businessman, that's risky. cnn polls just came out in colorado, voters trust him on the economy.
5:47 am
>> to this point of the lying. new york times did one week look, they found 31 just straight up untruth in them. >> in one week. >> hillary clinton is not doing that. >> it is not the same thing. the idea that you will put these people on the same level is completely wrong. she has to figure out a way. she cannot stand there and let him saying things. >> that's the beauty tonight. they are the historically lowest and trusted people we have at this point. tonight, it changes because it is the first time that you see them in correct comparison. that can change everything. >> and the 90 minute stamina that it takes to say your own policy. >> panelists, thank you for previewing this feistiness for

5:53 am
there will be some pricurprise. lets start with clinton. we'll see what worked for her and what has not as well >> credibility is an issue. out there with the world and we have repair work to be done. i think we need someone that has the best ethical standards as our next president. secretary clinton do you want to respond? >> no. >> this year has been the year of the outsider and politics asked bernie sanders, why should democrats should raise an insider yourself. >> okay, so congresswoman, that first one, where she just said no and smiled. short and sweet and got the point across and quite refreshing. given the fact that most politicians don't answer questions bluntly and clearly. she's seasoned. i think this is a debate that's going to be trump to lose.
5:54 am
he's a performer. this is the kind of setting that he should play to. that would play to his strengths and you will see hillary be as confidence as she has been. >> what do you think of our producers identify as the bad moment instead of acknowledging bernie sanders outside of the fuelling for public, wanting somebody to shake it up. >> well, they're using it all. they're playing the woman card, this is something that came up about her. >> the fact that she's a woman and this is a historical election. >> donald trump wants to act like he's an outsider and he's been in the political process, not as a politician but as a donor to politician, someone who's given to get access for his businesses. so you know it is easier to say
5:55 am
insider our outsi insider or outsider but she will make history whether elected or elected. >> obviously, the war in iraq is a big fat mistake, all right? >> we have spent $2 trillion, thousands of lives and we don't have it. george bush made a mistake. that one was a beauty. we should have never been in iraq. >> mr. trump you repeted yourself. >> no, i have watched it five times. >> he says five things, everyone's dumb, he's going to make america great again and win, win. >> senator, please. every night. >> when you size up trump, his greatest strengths can be his greatest weakness. what do you want to see tonight?
5:56 am
>> we want to see president trump. we need to reunite america. one of his themes and commenting on what you said on hillary clinton as she stands up and says vote for me because i am a woman. that's shameful. >> barack obama says, vote for me because i am black and we need to protect my legacy. what happens to the most qualifying candidates. >> that's not what i am saying. >> the first woman, it does not matter. we want the single most qualified person to be president. >> when hillary clinton was running against obama in the primary. there was this weird tension between, well, i am the first, i will be the first woman. well, he's the first black, that
5:57 am
