where your eyebrows go up and say this is a problem. >> first of all, jackie said he did okay out of the gate and went down hill quickly. when he made the turn and he brought up bill clinton's infidelity shows he is a raccoon pushed into the corner. if he brings that up in the debate, that is a fatal blow. that is not a good issue if he addresses it on stage to hillary clinton. of course, he has addressed it and he has the deniability. that is an explosive subject to hurt him more with women voters. >> and dana bash interviewed trump about this afterwards. here is what he said. >> i'm very happy i was able to hold back on the indiscretions with respect to bill clinton because i have a lot of respect for chelsea clinton and i just didn't want to say what i was going to say. >> which is? >> which is i'll tell you maybe

viewers thought he was strong. >> i absolutely did. he came out sounding like a fighter for the working people. that was sort of the vintage trump that brought so many people to his campaign. it sort of disappeared like jackie said. he trailed off into answers that were sometimes total totally incoherent and getting into the weeds on his position on iraq. there were a lot of missed opportunities for him there. i think she clearly did what she needed to do last night in the sense that it was such a smooth performance. she never really got rattled by him. you know, maybe some people will say little bit too robotic. smiling through the insults. she really was in command on that stage. >> here is the moment that people thought was strong when he talked about trade.

listen. >> your husband signed nafta which was one of the worst things that happened to the manufacturing industry. go to new england, ohio, pennsylvania. go anywhere you want, secretary clinton. you will see devastation where manufacturing is down 30% and 40% and 50%. nafta is the worst trade deal signed anywhere. certainly ever signed in the country. now you want to approve trans-pacific partnership. you were in favor of it. you know if you did win, you would approve that. that will be almost as bad as nafta. nothing will ever top nafta. >> that is not just accurate. i was against it once it was finally negotiated. the terms were laid out. i wrote about that in -- >> you called it the gold standard of trade deals. you said it is the finest deal you ever seen. >> trump's best moment, right?

that was hypebole. she is part of the establishment. he unravelled on taxes and birther nonsense. intere interrupting her. she was unflappable. i thought the devastating line for her, just listen to what you heard. people say he talked more than she did. i think she was happy to have him keep talking. the tale of two trumps here. it goes to what ron was saying. who did he reach that he can turn things around with? college educated whites? moderate republicans and women? i don't see it despite that strong start for him. >> a big piece of his electorate

and sean said and he called me the other day. i spoke to him about it. he said you were totally against the war. he was for the war. >> let's bring back our panel to discuss this and more. we have ron brownstein and maeve reston and jackie kucinich. >> he said called sean hannity. i don't know that the hannity defense is legal. >> beyond that, isn't this a weird rabbit hole? he wasn't -- >> there were several weird rabbit holes. the taxes, the birther, iraq, comments about women. he cannot transcend the personal controversies in his past. it is important for clinton to bring up.

an issue of sloughing off what happened before and move forward. he was in the arguments as much with lester holt and with hillary clinton. that deepened the questions. he faced questions about qualifications and temperament. despite what he said about temperament. he looked peevish. he kept getting wrapped around the axle of the old disputes. he could not get to the issues republicans want to hear. >> david, this is a rehearsal for how you handle the job. you have to own your words as president. the birther moment stuck out for me as much more than a rabbit hole. he had an opportunity from lester holt. he said what do you say to the people who are offended by this? people know this wasn't a sham.

it was done because president obama is being defined as an other. were you surprised by that? >> no. i held out the idea there may be elements of humility of donald trump. he thought it was a good idea to double down on the nonsense. a racist lie he perpetuated to get into national politicians and it was cleared up by his terms and it was cleared up because it was part of him playing footsie as the alt-right who wanted to delegitimize the president because he is african-american or some would say erroneously he is muslim and on and on and on. this is the point. people watching this is a how do you handle the scrutiny and how do you handle yourself on the world stage. you saw two different people. at the beginning, i thought he showed a certain measure of

discipline. he got too hot for the room. you heard it in the exchanges. interrupting hillary clinton. saying wrong, wrong. jousting with lester holt who also kept his cool and did a very good job. everyone else, namely secretary clinton, had the cloak of the presidency around her. unflappable. a kind of steel magnolia. he looked the out liar. >> jackie, as expected, hillary clinton was asked about the e-mails. let's listen to that response and how trump responded to it. listen to this. >> i made a mistake using a private e-mail. >> that's for sure. >> and if i had to do it over again, i would do it differently. >> that was not a mistake. that was done purposely. when you have your staff taking the fifth amendment so they are not prosecuted.

so what did undecided voters think about the debate? we assembled a group of them in the swing state of florida. were they swayed by either

what was your take? >> he is selling a different hand. she was around a long time. she was first lady. she was senator and secretary of state. he said i'm the outsider businessman. that goes to the temperament issue. he said i have the temperament of someone going to washington d.c. with little patience and try to change in a dramatic way. >> there was a moment that hillary clinton did not seem prepared for. one answer. that is what have you accomplished. you thought about these things for 30 years, but what did you accomplish. let's play that moment. >> you've been doing this for 30 years. why are you just thinking about these solutions right now? for 30 years you have been doing it and now you are just starting to think of solutions. excuse me. i will bring back jobs. you can't bring back jobs. >> well, actually, i have thought about it quite a bit.

was saying this is prospective. she hasn't been involved in the domestic economy in the past couple years. >> she did not say let me tell you what i accomplished. >> the most important piece for her in that moment was to undermine his attitude about what he had done. he is out there saying i have done this. my business experience shows it. she had a lot to say on his business. >> she did. let's play the sound last night. hillary clinton using donald trump's business experience into a window of what might not be good. >> we have an architect in the audience who designed one of your clubhouses at one of your golf courses. it is a beautiful facility. it immediately was put to use and you wouldn't pay what the man needed to be paid what he was charging you. >> maybe he did not do a good job and i was unsatisfactoied w his work which the country
