thanks for joining us. potential direct hit from a category four hurricane is what florida's governor rick scott is telling people to prepare for. hurricane matthew. mandatory evacuations already under way. six medical facilities across the state have begun moving patients out. there is new information on the storm's track and bringing that to you throughout the next two hours. we begin with a run up to the next presidential debate here on cnn on sunday as well as donald trump's victory lap since last night's v.p. debate. polls moving sharply since the first clinton/trump face-off. this could be decisive. trump is in nevada, saw the biggest polling shift in his favor. wrapped up a rally in nereno wh was his message?

>> reporter: getting close to november 8th. talking about early voting. and lit into obamacare, noted that bill clinton described obamacare as a crazy system. he's walked that back in the last phfew days but he tried an impersonation of clinton. he also tried to get them to pronounce nevada as nevada. that was like an episode of "veep," it's called nevada. >> there were some reports might have felt upstaged after pence's performance. campaign denied that. what can you tell us? >> reporter: trump campaign is pushing back on any notion that donald trump was upset by mike pence's performance last night.

kellyanne conway said that that was false, truly outrageous were the words she used and trump was praising mike pence at this rally. didn't talk about it for long but basically taking a victory lap for mike pence and saying he deserves part of the credit for that performance. here's what he had to say. >> mike pence did an incredible job and i'm getting a lot of credit because that's really my first so-called choice, that was my first hire as we would say in las vegas, and i'll tell you he's a good one, phenomenal, cool, smart. i mean just take a look at him. he was meant to be doing what he's doing and we're very, very proud of governor mike pence. thank you mike pence. >> reporter: now, of course throughout the day anderson kweef heard from political

pundits up to rush limbaugh asking mike pence whether or not this performance was generating buzz about mike pence in 2020. not effect trump campaign intended last night. perhaps not exactly what they wanted in picking mike pence, it's never good to upstage the boss, especially in politics. >> more on trump's visit in new hampshire, unlike the big rallies, it's town hall, same format as sunday's debate on cnn. no coincidence there. dana bash joins us with details and political strategy. seems like dry run. >> one source told me it's scrimmage. really want donald trump to retain muscle memory from town halls. hasn't done as many town halls as chris christie or time in

john mccain when he lived in new hampshire where town hall is part of the political dna. but the fact is they want him to be in intimate setting just like sunday night, chosen the place where chris christie had his first town hall when he announced for president in 2016 and chris christie is involved in trying to get donald trump ready stylistically for the idea of being questioned by undecided voters. even how you sit, stand, approach them, what you say when you approach them. the things that are obviously quite different from the traditional debate without the town hall. that's about as far i'm told as their getting in terms of getting trump to change up way he's preparing for the debate as opposed to the first debate. >> so you're hearing they're not doing other kinds of prep, mock debates or --

>> correct. >> study sessions, anything like that? >> study sessions, yes. told the groups are a bit smaller. first debate was a big conference table with at times upwards of 20 people and unruly at times, not focused. smaller sessions, no mock debates. nothing along the lines of what tim kaine or hillary clinton, but mike pence had. that his people have said explicitly to me and others what made him successful in the debate is he had the practice. texted me last night, practice, practice, practice, it matters. spoke to source familiar with trump's debate strategy. are you going to fly? of pence's people into help him? of course not. couldn't be more different. what would it do. >> and hillary clinton is doing

tsh. >> what she did the first debate. shifted to tim kaine and now shifted back. some prep today and will continue. trump's schedule is clear on friday and not going to campaign but debate prep. >> bring in the rest of the panel. trump supporter. democratic political strategist. political analyst. and other trump supporters. fact that trump is doing this essentially run-through town hall for those who said he didn't prepare enough will assume come as good news. >> i think it will. inside the trump campaign there is a sense that donald trump kind of needs the practice and only way to get him to focus is to actually have this dry run or scrimmage as dan is calling it. i think it could really help

him. however we're all going to be watching it don't forget. he's going to be judged on this town hall before he does the one on sunday night. it doesn't work with donald trump to say be like mike. that's not going to work for him. he's got to be donald trump. as cory is fond of saying. >> how concerned are you that town hall format is not to his greatest strengths is this. >> i think the moderator is going to be a concern on sunday, tough and brash, anderson cooper is going to be tough on everybody. but what people don't remember is donald trump did town halls before the primaries, giant one in rochester, new hampshire, and in iowa. did one on monday with veterans. this has been consistent message. most people accustomed to the large-scale rallies where donald

trump talks freelance or off the teleprompter for 40 minutes. this is donald trump at his best interacting in small environment one-on-one with people and answering questions, and hopefully getting a head start on what the questions are that will be asked sunday night. hopefully the same concerns that people have sunday night will be addressed tomorrow night in new hampshire. >> as trump supporter are you worried he's not taking enough time off or lightening schedule enough? >> i think friday is good to take the time. mock town hall tomorrow is good veteran's town hall on monday was good. did well. in the town hall, consensus was donald trump did better. hillary clinton not as well. blamed on the moderator matt lauer which is absurd but donald trump likes people, good at engaging in people. hillary clinton seems to hold in

contempt anybody who disagrees with her, deplorable or live in basement. >> is there consensus among republicans that donald trump needs this debatd? >> yes. 100%, 110% if mathematically possible. among republicans who like donald trump, those who don't, nearest and dearest, say he needs to do better. that means staying on the message of what he wants to talk about as much as possible and not get into a tit for tat with hillary clinton as much as she tries to goad him. no question. >> still a tate for tat but whether on policy or not hillary clinton comes in with wind in her sails but pressure is on to keep it going.

>> i think that's 100% right. i want to expectations management agree with the first part of what my good friend kailee said. this is a format that works well for donald trump. he engages people really well. hillary clinton, depending on the person can be hit or miss. i'm concerned there's a question comes up and comes across as guarded or protected and comes across as not likeable. but seen several video footage of her in town hall format done well. i'm concerned can go any way and clinton supporters have a lot more to worry about. >> and clinton campaign and others across the board should always be concerned. that's how you win. opened up a lead of ten points nationally and leading in every battleground state especially

ohio, don't believe them. get out vote and mobilize and make sure donald trump never gets to the white house because that's only way it will happen. plus anything can happen. i actually agree with cory, i think this town hall format will be actually good for donald trump because it will keep him boxed in. won't be a rally where he can say whatever he wants. won't have teleprompter or notes but have the parameters of the moderators, people in front of him that i think will keep him much more managed. at least i think that's what campaign hopes. >> if the king of town halls is john kasichs. >> did more than 100 in new hampshire. >> he emotes and hugs people. great in that format. i disagree with you guys. i think that donald trump has had some difficulty in town halls. and you've done this with him. he doesn't address the person

and we as company. if we ever see your father's income taxes it will show he has paid federal income taxes. >> there's no question about it. we may tremendous taxes. >> for some this puts it to rest, for others other questions. timothy o'brien, author of account trump nation". >> when he insists that father paid federal income tax it's not implication from the "new york times" in 1995. based on your reporting on trump are you skeptical? >> i'm not really sure what anything is eric trump has seen. both of the trump boys tend it get father in hot water when they speak up on these issues. i think the returns in question go back two decades and eric

trump is -- and i think he's in early 30s, i'm not really -- i doubt his father showing him all tax returns as toddler. that being said, one of the interesting things gone on in this debate off the "new york times" story, a lot of focus on the legality of the massive deduction he took and rudy giuliani and chris christie spun this as examples of donald's genius when in fact the write-off represents an epic business failure. it's representative of about $900 million worth of loans that he guaranteed personally when he went on acquisition spree in the mid to late 1980s and all of it ended up in a giant train wreck. bought airlines, hotels,

overleveraged casino business and ended up with a ton of debt he couldn't repay because he overpaid for properties, he didn't think far enough ahead about the projespects for the businesses he was entering. it's classic donald trump decision making. he's actually very undisciplined, short-term, nonstrategic thinker and write-off is a numeric emblem of that tendency he has. >> obviously trump could put all the questions to rest by releasing tax returns and saying not releasing them while under audit even though nothing is preventing him from doing that and by his lawyer's own admission returns from 2002 to 2008 are no longer under audit. >> and by the way anderson, the trump campaign has not given any proof to anyone they're actually

under audit. they could release the letter from the irs showing that to be the case and they haven't. secondly even if there were an audit, and they haven't made that clear, that wouldn't prevent him if releasing anything. it's just not -- all the audit stuff is a red herring. >> "forbes" magazine put net worth less than what he claims. somebody sued by trump for writing he's not as rich as he says, dismissed by the way, how much does that bother him? >> i think it bothers him immensely for all of donald's bluster and bullying and brag, he's immensely insecure about fundamental things, one is his sense of himself and his net worth and how rich he is and where he figures on the pecking

order is much more important to him than it is to anyone else. no one cares about his wealth as much as donald trump himself does. >> appreciate you being on. thanks. >> good to be here. >> still plenty of questions. back with the panel. you had the conversation dana. does that settle anything? >> no. i think questions that were out there remain. i mean there was only so much time and there were a lot of unanswered questions even as he was answering the questions. one of which frankly looking back i should have been specific, personal income taxes, corporate income taxes and maybe the obvious which is he said he had seen them, did you see the check? dhou you actually know he paid. it was knee-jerk reaction as son of somebody under fire to try to put it to bed by saying yes, it

was only answer seemed like he could give but we don't know. >> donald trump could easily, even not releasing actual full returns which are obviously large as eric trump as pointed out in the past, could just acknowledge one way or another whether in fact he did not pay personal federal income tax as result of the write-off. >> it release a statement saying i paid hundreds of millions in several taxes. >> but not answered that question. >> federal taxes is part of that. i think "new york times" story is emblematic of why he shouldn't release taxes. he says could have not paid taxes for years. since when specktory stories. speculation, still talking about could have not paid taxes story. there's no proof he didn't, so why release hundreds of pages

that will be miss construed by the media and clinton campaign. >> but could release basic information, tax rate, what he paid maend and charitable distributions. >> i think it's irrelevant at this point. you have opportunity to move forward for the next four or eight years as president of the united states and issues affecting american people, jobs immigration, their personal taxes and business of washington d.c., people want to dwell on taxes, welcome to do that. 11% of the american people think hillary clinton is honest and trustworthy. and 55 points in the wrong direction if you think country is on the right or wrong track. american people don't care about donald trump's taxes, they care about safety. >> trump campaign is tone deaf

with these issues. seen in poll after poll that majorities of the american people, trump supporters, believe that number one taxes is civic duty and people should pay them. and above 70% believe he should release taxes. put legality aside, two things, it's unseemly when you have a multibillionaire who touts his business acumen and how rich he is every three seconds and then seem to find out he's actually paid no federal taxes for 18 years, perhaps longer, "newsweek" article came out and showed oermg years with a lot of losses and business acumen is a fraud. it's not so much even how much taxes he paid. if you want to buy the argument he had good accountant and didn't have to pay. let's assume that argument.

what is at question is where are his investments, what potential conflicts of interest are there with foreign governments particularly says since he says he's handing business over to my kids to run that business. these are things that would be outlined in a tax return, not just the bottom line. and not the charitable and all the rest. these are serious foreign policy issues. >> i think the most serious issue. i think the public deserves answers. >> on that point certainly but i also think there is yet north point. this is the same person called for transparency from potential and this opponent. asked for wall street transcripts, asked president obama when just thinking about a run for a birth certificate. why not meet the very same standard. one of the most effective lines that tim kaine had last night is

not even meeting nixon standard ob this. released after he ran. >> said in the first debate release it after hillary clinton releases e-mails. >> he won't. >> he did call for transcripts and she refuses. made tens of millions of dollars or more from wall street executives. >> apples to apples. >> if you want to see donald trump's holding, go to the fair election commission, pull out paper. >> it's not the same. >> properties he own and debt on those. >> but there is a lot not in those documents that would be in a tax return. >> no question about it. financial disclosure has some information but not nearly as much as you would learn by what he pays or doesn't in taxes with regard to personal taxes. no question.

>> if hillary clinton, none of her tax information was out there, wouldn't the trump campaign or any opponent be raising lots of red flags about that? >> i think congress has put in place laws that suggest what we expect for someone running for highest office in the land. financial disclosure form, donald trump did that. for maria to say it's no the the same. you're right. federal records act required her to keep the e-mails that she disobey disobeyed. >> none of that has been proven. >> it has. >> no no. >> it has been proven. >> it was looked at by committees in congress. nothing found. >> he confirmed that. violated federal records act. >> you continue to say there's no law that donald trump has got to release taxes but fact of the matter is for 40 years this has been the standard and the

joining me now. anna your reaction to what governor said last night about whipping out that mexican thing. >> i giggled a little bit because i thought it was weird phrasing. for a while there i thought anthony weiner had gone crazy celebrating national taco day yesterday. mike pence has supported immigration reform, in congress part of the republican, he was compassionate man who spoke up in favor of immigration reform. so give him benefit of the doubt. most of america doesn't him. only donald trump's running mate. when you're running mate of man spoke about mexicans and said some of them rapists and things he's said and attacked a judge

born in indiana for being mexican heritage. you don't get tra americans. turned in rallying call for lot of latinos. >> steve you think hurt him in latino community? latest national polling. donald trump winning just 17%, likely, hillary clinton 65%, before the debates. does this hurt? >> i'll be the first to concede not doing great among voters of color. republican party hasn't for sielks. the not new to donald trump. >> but better in the past. >> but as hispanic he wasn't to mexico and was presidential meeting with the president.

he said and meant it, mexican-american community is a treasure to the united states. we need and love legal immigration and no one is more adversely affected by illegal immigration than legal immigr t immigran immigrants. people like my father who did it the right way, went through onrus procedures. they're most cheated when he say it's okay for illegals to hop the line and get in front of them. it's unfair, bad economic policy and terrible national security policy. we're going to get control of our border. we love immigrations. he's soften immigrant, married to immigrant. we know what immigration does for the united states in terms of culture and vitality but we have right as people to do it in legal means. >> and there's battleground states with large population of immigrants. it's mott monolithic.

is it possible the way governor pence handled it, pivoted away from trump's past talk about immigration help latino voters vote for trump? >> there are conservative latino voters but huge minority. very small minority. i came to this country legally too. i came by plane and did it legally but i also understand that but for the grace of god go i. i came as 8-year-old girl but could very well have been a another type of girl. had parents not had money to hire lawyers and able to make me legal. i could have been one of the girls who found out at 19 going to college i was illegal. but for the grace of god that wasn't the case.

but because this campaign has preyed on latinos and immigrants, made it a pillar of their campaign to attack hispanics and immigrants, make it one of the things they stand on, don't get benefit of the doubt. >> quite the opposite. >> got to walk on eggshells because he doesn't have benefit of the doubt. >> you're trying to make. >> i'm not donald trump has made it since june 16th when he first called mexicans rapists. it wasn't me but donald trump who went on the attack against mexicans from day one of this campaign. >> steve go ahead. >> you're trying to make illegal immigrants the victims. they are breaking the law. victims are not illegals who break the immigration laws and come in way not allowed. >> steve, anna is talking about language that your candidate that you're supporting has used. when you hear some of the

language he's used do you have any problems with it? >> i'll be the first to say particularly early in the campaign i didn't like the tone. i think alienated hispanics unnecessarily. i think trying to do our best to win over, convince voters of color that democratic party is taking you for granted and pandered to you with illegal immigration or schools or economic opportunity. we're saying we have a better way forefor you. and part of it for legal hispanics illegal immigration is nonstarter. >> i've got to go. >> there's reason your hispanic advisory council has shrunk every week. ashamed of the words donald trump has used. begin not calling us voters of color, african-americans,

where the governor is warning if hurricane matthew makes a direct hit there could be devastating massive destruction. evacuation is underway. after the hurricane left at least ten people dead across the caribbean. now forkers are watching to see what's in store. our meteorologist jennifer gray joins with us the latest. where is matthew now? >> reporter: right now it is 360 miles west of palm beach. this is the latest advisory at 8 p.m. winds 115 miles an hour. gusts 150. strong category three storm. moving to the northwest at 12 miles per hour. on this track it wil restrengthen. we are thinking that it is getting better organized. it will have time to strengthen in to a possible category four storm, just off the coast of miami-dade, broward counties, thursday afternoon, 130 mile per

hour winds and then either brush the coast of florida, move inland or stay out to sea. you see where this cone is of uncertainty. all of these different scenarios will mean huge differences in the impacts that are felt. hurricane-force winds extend 45 miles from the center. this storm jogs a little more west. it could mean much more far-reaching impacts for the state of florida. if it jogs to the east that would be the best-case scenario. it looks like it will loop back to the north and east by the time we get in to the weekend and then a lot of uncertainty from there. some models are showing this bending back around and impacting florida for a second time as we get to the middle of next week. a lot of uncertainty there. one thing we are certain of this will have huge impacts for florida and the southeast coast in the coming days. >> we will watch it closely. our second hour of 360, how
