she's still very beautiful. >> i move on her and i failed. i've said and done things i regret, and the words released today on this more than a decade old video are one of them. anyone who knows he knows the words don't reflect who i. . i aide is, i was wrong, and i apologize. i've traveled the country talking about change for america, but my travels have also changed me. i've spent time with grieving mothers who lost their children, laid-off workers whose jobs have gone to other countries, and people from all walks of life who just want a better future. i have gotten to know the great people of our country, and i've been humbled by the faith they've placed in me. i pledge to be a better man tomorrow and will never, ever let you down. let's be honest -- we're living in the real world. this is nothing more than a
1:02 am
distraction from the important issues we're facing today. we're less safe than we were eight years ago, and washington is totally broken p. hillary clinton and her kind have run our country into the ground. i've said foolish things, but there's a big difference between the words and actions of other people. bill clinton has abused women, and hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed, and intimidated his victims. we will discuss this more in the coming days. see you at the debate on sunday. >> campaign releasing that recorded response. now to the video that prompted the apology. it was shot in 2005 for a segment on "access hollywood," an entertainment news show in the united states. you hear donald trump in the clip talking off camera to the show's host about trying to have sex with a married woman among other things. the video never aired, but it was recently given to the "washington post," and that organization promptly published

it. leading into this, we do warn you that the discussion that you'll hear in this video is graphic and vulgar. >> i moved on her in palm beach. i moved on her, and i failed. >> i move on her and i failed. i'll admit it. i did try and -- her. she was married. >> that's huge news. >> no, no. nancy. no, this was -- >> and i moved on her very heavily. in fact, i took her out furniture shopping. she wanted to get some furniture. i said, "i'll show you where they have some nice furniture." i moved on her like a bitch. but i couldn't get there. and she was married. then all of a sudden i see her. she's now got the big phony tits and everything. she's totally changed her look. >> sheesh, your girl's hot -- in the purple. whoa, the donald is good. whoa, my man. >> look at you. you are a -- >> maybe it's a different one. >> it better not be the publicist. no, it's her. it's her. >> yeah, that's her, with the gold. >> i've gotta use some tic tacs just in case i start kissing her.
1:04 am
you know, i'm automatically attracted to beautiful -- i just start kissing them. it's like a magnet. just kiss. i don't even wait. and when you're a star, they let you do it. you can do anything. >> whatever you want. >> grab them by the [ bleep ]. you can do anything. >> oh, nice legs, huh? >> get out of the way, honey. oh, that's good legs. go ahead. >> it's always good if you don't fall out of the bus. like ford, gerald ford, remember? down below. pull the handle. >> hello. how are you? >> hi. >> hi, mr. trump. how are you? >> pleasure to meet you. >> nice seeing you. terrific, terrific. you know billy bush? >> hello, nice to see you. how are you doing, arianne? >> i'm doing very well. thank you. are you ready to be a soap star? >> we're ready. let's go. make me a soap star. >> how about a little hug for the donald? he just got off the bus. >> would you like a little hug, darling? >> absolutely. melania said this was okay. >> how about a little hug for the bushy? i just got off the bus.
1:05 am
here we go. excellent. well, you've got a nice co-star here. >> good. after you. >> come on, billy, don't be shy. >> as soon as a beautiful woman shows up, he just takes off. this always happens. >> let the little guy in. how you feel now? better? i should -- >> it's hard to walk next to a guy like this. you get in the middle. >> that's better. >> that's much better. >> if you had to choose honestly between one of us, me or the donald -- >> i don't know. tough competition. >> seriously, you had to pick one of us as a date? >> i'd have to take the fifth on that one. yeah, i'll take both. >> which way? >> make a right. here we go. right -- >> i'll leave you here, my microphone. >> you're finished? oh, good. >> i'm going to do the show. >> are you on reset? >> two videos grabbing headlines. the one that you saw, the clip, and the apology that donald trump made after words. my colleague, don lemon, spoke
1:06 am
earlier with a panel of commentators about both, and they had plenty to say. >> he said, "people who know me know that this isn't me, this incident isn't like me. yet, people who have been following this campaign do know that this is in line with other things he said. last year he attacked megyn kelly saying she had blood coming out of whatever. when people called him out for referring to her anatomy, he said, no, that's not what i was talking about. the media's jumping to conclusions. >> every time i hear that i cringe because that happened on this show. i remember leaving that evening thinking that the interview that donald trump had given me was going to be the end of his campaign. i was cringing at the statement and saying, gosh, donald trump's campaign was torpedoed on my show. >> a reminder that sometimes there are overreactions from the media. this was a defiant donald trump
1:07 am
in the statement. the video looked awkward. lighting was terrible. he should have been interviewed by someone -- >> he was reading -- >> it seemed awkward. my headline, he's going to the debate. he is not backing down. he is -- he is not -- this is a donald trump that supporterts love. and he's going to see hillary clinton in 45 hours. >> finish your statement. >> i think that was the main thing. to brian's point about donald trump being defiept, my colleague, robert o'hara, reported on this in june for the "post" talking about how trump was mentered by roy cone, one of the mccarthy-era lawyers, and one of the lessons in trump's formative professional years sort of gave him was this idea of never backing down, never apologizing. in this statement he did say he opposed, but it was -- apologized, but it was clear that he's not backing down. >> rebecca, what are your thoughts? >> i would like to highlight how
1:08 am
unusual this moment is in the big picture of this campaign. donald trump has not once during this campaign that i remember apologized for any of the many controversial statements he's made. tonight he did. when the american people and when voters are going to accept that apology is an open question. we'll see in the days and weeks to come what the answer is. i think tonight it is incredible that donald trump has taken this step, admit he was wrong, said he will be better in the future. i think it underlines how important he recognizes and his campaign recognize that's this controversy is and will be for them. they see that this is damaging, and they have responded tonight. >> both democrats and republicans are speaking out against donald trump. republican national committee chairman reince priebus saying the following, "no woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner,
1:09 am
ever." 2012 presidential nominee mitt romney tweeting, "hitting on married women, condoning assault, such vile degradations demean our wives and daughters, and corrupt america's face to the world." trump's political challenger, hillary clinton, tweeting the following -- "this is horrific. we cannot allow this man to become president." he later tweeted, "women have the power to stop trump." hillary's rung estimate also lashing out against republican donald trump. >> there's a couple of things i think this suggests, and it -- it's so clear. first, any republican who has said they are for donald trump, they need to be asked by the press and others and by constituents right now, do you still think he's qualified to be president of the united states. >> in the meantime, some trump supporters are speaking out in
1:10 am
his defense. one of them, cnn political contributor scotty nell hughes, here's what she had to say to my colleague, don lemon. >> am i supposed to judge his words? i judge actions. i'm not electing donald trump for -- >> yes, you're supposed to judge his words and actions on the bus. those were actions and words. he's saying -- >> he didn't quote the woman. he did not say -- he did not walk up and do those things. it was the words, the locker room talk that unfortunately exists in many male groups today. >> oh, this is absurd. >> here's something about what we heard about tonight. he did apologize. if we want to do the structure of how sincere he was -- are we going to hold that to hillary clinton for things she apologizeded -- wait, she never really apologized for insulting -- >> yes, if hillary clinton and her surrogates were on the show and she had done something controversial, yes, we would hold her to the same standards -- >> she did do things controversial, and we haven't held -- >> it didn't happen, it didn't
1:11 am
happen today. >> scottie nell hughes defending her candidate on cnn tonight with don lemon. let's talk about how this plays into the weeks leading up to election day. eugene scott joining us via skype from new york. good to have you again with us. let's talk now about the release of clinton's campaign chairwoman emails -- chairman emails. it's touching on trade, the middle class, but it's the timing of this release that could actually benefit clinton because everyone's talking about the video that was released of donald trump. >> reporter: very much so, it's captured many of the headlines. at sunday's debate, situated very much like a town hall, donald trump and his campaign will be focusing on these emails and the revelations that hillary clinton's policies and positions on trade are inconsistent with donald trump's and what he
1:12 am
believes to be consistent with the desires of the american people. if you recall the first debate, the areas that donald trump got the most positive reviews is when he was attacking hillary clinton's trade policies. so if the speeches are actually from the clinton campaign, which the clinton campaign has not confirmed or denied donald trump is going to move forward with the attacks down that lane. >> when it comes to donald trump if he goes into the debate stage and talks about this issue and takes on hillary clinton talking about her marriage and the pitch of inif i definitely -- infidelity of her husband, could it backfire against him? >> reporter: this debate will be a town hall style, and there will be questions from the audience. how he interacts with real voters will be interesting to see what issues they care about most. these are real people, not
1:13 am
seasoned debate moderators. his response and the issues that they care about will help determine how well he does with voters beyond sunday. many may not respond well to him pivoting to hillary clinton's marriage with bill clinton and the issues that they've had when the focus right now is on his words a few years ago. >> the focus also on words he used to apologize. the question many are asking -- did it go far enough? >> well, the reaction from many republican strategists was that the initial apology did not go far enough. this is before me released the video and maybe one of the reasons why he decided to move forward with the video. as you know, donald trump's campaign has been well known for not forcing or even encouraging trump to apologize when he's been criticized in the past. this is a significant shift for the trump campaign. whether or not it's enough, we
1:14 am
will be hearing really soon. >> you know, for people, many that are supporting donald trump, you get the sense and many of our pundits have pointed this out, that it seems to be a referendum against hillary clinton. the opposite is the same for democrats, that in fact perhaps it's a referendum against donald trump. so the question, eugene, as we're seeing this clip that has been released, how does that play with trump's base, and also how does it play with independent voters? >> when talking to people from trump's base primarily on social media, their focus is on the emails, especially those who are more conservative, and morally their thought is that these actions were unacceptable, words were unacceptable, but they were in the past, and they are moving forward. that they still believe that donald trump is the best candidate to lead the country. so it's not that group that the trump campaign has to be most concerned about, it's certainly the independent voters and those on the bubble. we had a poll from cnn
1:15 am
yesterday, on cnnpolitics.com yesterday showing that hillary clinton it winning with independent voters. >> it seems that this video that has been released will be front and center to set the stage as the debate kicks off on sunday. all eyes watching eugene scott live in new york. thank you. >> thank you. it's been called appalling, offensive. it has been called sickening. that's some of the reaction from people in donald trump's only party. ahead, some of the support that he has just lost.
1:18 am
breaking news, donald trump apologizing for vulgar comments he made about women in 2005, but for many, that apologize is hardly enough. trump has already lost support from a number of top republicans. the u.s. speaker of the house of the house of representatives, paul ryan, saying that he is si sickened by what he heard and disinvited donald trump from an event he's hosting. an unaired taping of "access hollywood" was released of trump from 2005. in it he can be heard talking to the host saying that he had tried to sleep with a married woman. he also bragged that his fame, his celebrity enabled him to grab women by their genitals without complaint.
1:19 am
trump's apology didn't address the comments and mentioned bill clinton's sex scandal from the 1990s. he lost the endorsement of a top republican in congress from utah, jason chaffetz. he spoke to cnn earlier. >> i'm out. i can no longer endorse donald trump for president. there's no possible way i'd vote for hillary clinton, but these are abhorrent, wrong. it's used a baseball metaphor, i got to call balls and strikes the way i see 'em. you know, my wife and i have a 15-year-old daughter. you think i can look her in the eye and tell her that i endorsed donald trump for president when he acts like this? and his apology -- that was no apology. that was an apology for getting caught. i worry that -- you know, it's naive to think if there's this and that sort of approach, you think this is the only thing
1:20 am
that's out there like this? i got to say, i played college football, been in locker rooms. this was not just locker room talk, it was offensive and totally wrong. i'm not going to endorse this. again, i'm not going to vote for hillary clinton. there's no way i'm going to do that. but i -- i can't tell the good people of utah that i endorse a person who acts like this. and we all do silly, stupid stuff, and try to make -- probably make jokes that are inappropriate. this goes beyond that. it's -- and i think we should all stand up and say we're not going to tolerate this. why should we have a race to the bottom? that's who we are as the republican party. and i can't endorse this person for president p. >> motorsportly after trump apologized, my colleague, paula newton, got reaction from a republican consultant and a political strategist. here's what they had to say
1:21 am
starting with mac zilber. >> donald trump looked like he had a gun to his head when he was giving the video speech. if there was a gun to his speech, it wouldn't matter because his campaign is dead already. when you have mitt romney saying his behavior corrupts the country, when you have paul ryan, mitch mcconnell, and even reince priebus, a trump defender from day one, standing up to condemn him in the strongest terps possible, it is over. and the biggest question now is how much will the shock waves peek the senate and house ballot. >> donald trump said you should never speak about a woman like that ever. yet, what we heard from trump was doubling down on the sins of bill clinton. do you expect in what you heard -- there are his comments -- no one should be described in terms or talked about in this manner, period, ever. that is quite clear. and we are hearing from a large
1:22 am
breadth of the republican party, people who were going to support donald trump, that they no longer support him. of course, we're hearing from some on social media, some from our sources. john, in terms of the campaign itself, how do you get beyond thi this? >> right, you're see defections in the coming 24 and 48 hours because members of the senate and congress are in self-preservation mode now, and they should be. looking at donald trump's campaign, look, tonight obviously what he said is reprehensible. but it's not a newsflash that he's been demeaning to women before. of course these comments have never been said. just speaking crassly about the politics of it all, those who weren't with him and didn't like his temperament and personality before -- i don't think this moves the needle a lot in either direction. the problem is donald trump had to expand the tentment he to
1:23 am
bring -- tent. he had to bring in particularly white women into the tent to win the election. this tape didn't do him any favors. >> turning to hillary clinton. thousands of hacked emails from her chairman john podesta have been posted by wikileaks. they appear excerpts from transcripts of closed door speeches that clinton gave to wall street companies after leaving the u.s. state department. the hacked eemts were just released hours after the u.s. accused russia of trying to hack its elections. let's return to our politics reporter, eugene scott, live via skype from new york. eugene, here's the question -- that debate is set for sunday. which will matter more to voters, the people that these candidates will be talking to? will it be the video of trump talking about groping women and claiming that he could get away with it because of his celebrity, or will it be this release of emails from the clinton campaign? >> reporter: i think the more specific question is what will
1:24 am
matter most to independent voters. i'm hearing from trump's base that their focuses on these emails that came out friday, that that is what they believe is most important. hearing about hillary clinton's policies on trade and her connection or lack of connection to issues that are affecting middle-class voters or more specifically working class voters. but voters on the left and voters who are more concerned about temperament and being presidential and issues related to women and how women are discussed are pretty alarmed to say the least about the video involving donald trump. right now, we're looking at independent voters. >> right now as you're talking, we're look could at that moment. you know, people were -- curious about that moment. how would these two candidates each come together on stage, just given what seems to be their dislike for one another? how will hillary clinton
1:25 am
approach donald trump now since the video has been released and apology published? >> it will be town hall style so won't be like the first presidential debate. there won't be as much back and forth. you can best believe that both candidates will address the video videos and emails separate leap. what i'm looking at, what i'm focused on is how they will respond to audience questions. >> eugene, trump has promised to bring up clinton's marriage to the former president bill clinton and issue of infidelity, tell matter and how might clinton respond? >> the clinton campaign has been expecting this for a while. we had her campaign manager on cnn's "new day" saying that they would be prepared because this is something that the trump campaign has hinted at for a while. that's not a huge shift. it will be interesting to see how donald trump handles this,
1:26 am
how he blames hillary clinton far past actions of her husband years ago. it will be interesting, i think, to see how all the voters respond to issues that are both at least a decade old. this is very much a forward-moving campaign for both candidates. i don't know how much voters care about the past. >> we'll have to see. eugene scott live in new york. thank you. next here on "cnn newsroom," more on the fallout over donald trump's vulgar comments about women that came to surface from a video from 2005 and what trump is saying now. 4:29 on the u.s. east coast. welcome back to our viewers here in the united states and around the world. we continue following the breaking news here on cnn and a whole lot to talk about. an apology from donald trump for comments that he made a decade ago regarding women. the video clips of his comments were released on friday, and they are causing an uproar. trump is caught bragging about trying to have sex with a married woman and being able to grope women because he's a celebrity. we warn you going into it, his comments are vulgar and graphic. >> i moved on her, she was in palm beach. i moved on her. i admit it. she was married. no, nancy -- this was -- and i moved on her heavily. in fact, i took her furniture shopping.

1:31 am
furniture shopping. she wanted to get some furniture. i said, "i'll show you where they have some nice furniture." >> i moved on her like a bitch but i couldn't get there. and she was married. then all of a sudden i see her. she's now got the big phony tits and everything. she's totally changed her look. >> i've never said i'm a perfect person nor pretended to be someone i'm not. i've said and done things i regret. the words released on this more than a decade-old video are one of them. anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who i am. i said it. i was wrong. and i apologize. >> some republican leaders were quick to lash out against donald trump. republican senator mike lee called on trump to drop out of the race. in a video on facebook, he said, "you, sir, are the distraction. your conduct is the distraction." republican congresswoman barbara comstout also said trump should drop out saying, "this is disgusting, vile, and disqualifying. no woman should ever be subject
1:32 am
to this type of obscene behavior, and it is unbecoming of anybody seeking high office." in light of these comments, donald trump should step aside and allow our party to replace him with mike pence or another appropriate nominee from the pulp party. i cannot in good conscience vote for donald trump and would never vote for hillary clinton. c she is from virginia, a battleground state. brian stelzer from "reliable sources" weighed in on the fallout from donald trump's remarks. >> hey there. of all the bad days the trump campaign has recently had, this has to be the single worst day. [ applause ] >> it started for the campaign around 1:30 p.m. friday when the "washington post" called with a transcript of this video that we've all seen from 2005. let me take you back a little bit earlier to how this really all started to happen. this video was taped in 2005 but never broadcast at the time.
1:33 am
the video was essentially sitting on a shelf at nbc. the network that produces "access hollywood." and on monday, some of the producers at "access hollywood" started to think about the tape, started to wonder if they could find it and if they should broadcast it. what triggered all of this was actually an associated press story. the a.p., one of the biggest news wires in the world, published a story early monday with explosive allegations from about 260 former employees who worked on the -- 20 former employees who worked on "the apprentice," the reality show that helped trump get to where he is, that helped establish him in the homes. americans for many, many years. so these former employees allege that trump talked in demeaning, vulgar, sexually explicit ways about some of the staffers, about some of the contestants. and importantly here, the employees were speaking on the record. when the story came out, the trump campaign said the
1:34 am
allegations were absolutely false. it got "access hollywood" thinking about the video. they dusted it off, put it into nbc servers and were preparing a story about it. my sources said a script was written and everything, but it wasn't going to be broadcast until at least next week. perhaps for that reason, there was a leak, a leak from inside nbc to the "washington post." and that's why the reporter was calling at 1:30 on friday afternoon with this tape. at 4:00 is p.m., trump was half apologizing saying he was sorry if anyone was offended. that was clearly not enough. throughout friday evening, the story spiralled, getting worse and worse for the trump campaign. there was a scramble inside trump tower to get the candidate on camera with a much more robust apology p. that's what we've seen here in the last couple of hours. more serious apology from trump. a long video shared on line and shared on television. the question becomes when it is enough. this will clearly be an important topic at the debate less than two days from now.
1:35 am
back to you. >> brian stelzer pointing out that this will be a topic of conversation for sure come the debate. the other top story is the deadly hurricane making its way up the southeast u.s. west coast. and our reporter has more. >> reporter: yes, coming up after the break, we'll take you to charleston which has been pummelled by hurricane matthew as it's made its way slowly up the u.s. coast and did it make landfall? "credit karma, why are you checking your credit score?"
1:37 am
1:39 am
the other breaking news we're following this day, daeeay hurricane matthew, litting the u.s. southeast hard, it is already a deadly storm, it's killed four in florida and threatening north carolina and south carolina, as well as georgia with dangerous storm surges. michael holmes is likely in st. augustine, florida, anchoring coverage of the major storm this hour. michael? >> reporter: george, yes. st. augustine there, this is where there was a storm surge a few hours ago, where i'm standing now, the water was halfway up my calves. it has receded. the historic city that came into being 450 years ago when a spanish admiral settled it, is dry. it was under water for some time, though. in fact, the city was officially closed by authorities. when the storm surge was on its way, the mayor told the 13,500
1:40 am
residents to leave. apparently half did and half were stuck inside the city with floodwater that ranged from ankle deep to knee deep and pounding surf. the storm surge has been a real issue all along, and it continues to be in places like savannah, and charleston, and will as it continues further up the coast. power is also an issue. a million people in florida without electricity, although they're trying to get it back on as quickly as possible when we drove up here tharch from melbourne. -- farther from melbourne. we saw them trying to reconnect the electricity. as we say, hurricane matthew has been plotting its way for some time now after going through the caribbean and wreaking havoc in places like haiti, charleston is where we find brian todd.
1:41 am
what's the situation now? >> reporter: wind really picking up as the northern part of the eyewall approaches. this is getting intense. wind is becoming a major problem. you see this moving over, it's about to snap off its moorings. that's one thing to be careful about. lots of flying debris. down here, these trees have been on the verge of buckling for several hours. this is the scene occurring throughout charleston into the evening and the morning. we're told that sustained winds could reach about 70 miles per hour. a couple hours from now. so the wind in addition to the unending rain and water and storm surge is what caused a lot of problems here in charleston. storm surge as you've been
1:42 am
mentioning, we've been talking about it all morning, is going to be a huge problem here. it was expected to be about btween eight and 11 feet. here, it was nine feet, the highest on record. charleston peninsula, not far, the cooper river and ashley river converging at the tip of the peninsula. then it goes to the charleston harbor. all of that, the city is at that level. the town of buford, not far from here, is under sea level. this is called the low country, so any storm surge has a very destructive effect, we're seeing th that. the water coming over the sea wall -- [ inaudible ] right at sea level. that awning collapsing. got to keep an eye on that. that could snap off and come toward us.
1:43 am
michael, you know, that's what people are up against. whoever was going to evacuate has already done so. hurricane hugo was a category four that roared up charleston harbor. killed more than 20 in this area. a lot of them say, look, i lived through that, i state department through that, i can get through this. that's not what state officials want to hear. that is not the message they want spread around. again, we have people whose first inclingz it is i'm going -- inclination it is i'm going to ride it out and stay in place. officials telling us it's ill advised especially now. you can't try to move now, michael, because thrive told us that as there gets to its most intense effects the next couple of hours, they're not going to be able to put first responders on the streets to help people.
1:44 am
and we're getting to that point now. michael, that's the situation this morning here in charleston. deteriorating rapidly. >> reporter: you can hear and see what's going on. brian in the middle of it there. people who do not evacuate do not realize that first responders, they can't get to you if you're in trouble. and that's happened during the path and progression of the storm. derek van dam has been covering this all morning. last hour you said it was looking like we could have an official landfall around hilton head. has that happened? what's the latest? >> yeah, the northern eyewall moving across hilton head, bringing some of the strongest winds and some of the more devastating impacts. we haven't had an official landfalling hurricane yet. that is expected in the coming hours.
1:45 am
i want to talk about the storm surge potential in charleston, south carolina, where brian todd is currently located. we have a few different things all coming together at once. one is the significant rain associated with hurricane matthew. we've noticed the winds have changed from a northeasterly direction to an easterly component. this is driving some of the stronger winds right up into the tributaries and rivers. brian todd mentioned the ashley and cooper rivers. you can see them on this kind of a google earth-type image. and as we start to see the wind pushing directly up on the charleston harbor, the storm water drains can't handle the amount of excessive rain that they're trying to disperse from the canals and rivers here. so it's really working against each other. allowing for the tide to build up. not to mention the strong winds that continue to build up the storm surge. this is officially right now the third highest storm surge on
1:46 am
record for charleston harbor. it's the highest since hurricane hugo. and we're getting flashbacks of only a year ago when joaquin came through and brought devastating flooding, as well. look at the latest radar coming out of the region, flash flood warnings including savannah, charleston, and inland. this is the eye wall we keep talking about. it's just moving into the hilton head region. not a landfalling hurricane until the majority of the eyewall has crossed the coastline. we have flash flood watches through the carolinas. still a category-two hurricane. the major concern going forward, michael, will still be the excessive rain and the potential for storm surge at least the next six hours across the carolinas and moving up the coast, as well. back to you. >> yeah. water always the biggest danger more than wind and rain. derek van dam, good to see you.
1:47 am
