i'm michael smerconish coming to you from the keystone state of pennsylvania. this is a remarkable day and in any other cycle, you'd surely be saying, he's done. here's a live picture of trump tower an hour ago. donald trump emerge to chants of "usa, usa." we've got a month until election day. the huge town hall debate is

in terms of dealing with this situation. there's a lot of people out there up for election this year and very vulnerable situations but it's not just about elections but what's important for our country and as always, our party but we must do what's right here and somebody needs to step up and i would like to see the chairman do that. i have respect for him. i think he could. but inaction at this moment is not an option. >> congressman charlie dent, thank you so much for allowing us to intrude on your saturday evening. >> thank you. joining me, three cnn colleagues who have a tough job on their hands. all defenders, at least up until now, of donald trump. jeffrey, kaley, and jeff, first of all, a preliminary question, are any of you getting off the trump train right now? speak now or forever hold your

i think we could get a lot of blowback here because it's becoming increasingly an issue of the elites and the political class versus average working americans. and those folks are not happy in the first place. 70% of the country thinks the country is going in the wrong direction and they'll look at this exactly as the kind of thing that the elites would do to get him out of the race because they don't like him. and your interview with congressman dent just underlines that point. >> kaley, are you of the same opinion that there's nothing he can do that would cause kaley mcenany to change course? >> what could it be beyond saying grab her body? >> exactly. i'll defer to jeffrey on that. but what he said was wrong, michael. there's no doubt about it. no one is defending what he said. but let's be clear.

you could tell a lot about someone when they go through times of fire, hard times. what i learned about donald trump was he issued an apology. i don't think the one via writing was enough but came out on camera and verbally gave an apology. you know who could learn a lot from that? that was bill clinton denying his affair with monica lewinsky. hillary clinton saying i made a mistake, but it was colin powell's fault, but my aide's fault. he rose to the occasion, he owned it, he accepted responsibility and moving on. he needs to have a heartfelt moment during this town hall tomorrow to connect with the american people and does it one more time, but he owned it, the clintons could learn from that. >> but owning it in his case was issuing in a statement, initially, that said to the extent, i've offended anybody, i apologize and frankly, it was much more about himself. to the extent he's apologized to
