>>. welcome to sunday as we kounlt down to the debate tonight. it's 5:00 here an the east coast and i'm christi paul. so grateful for your company. victor blackwell in the place where it's going to happen tonight. victor. >> christi good morning to you. we're live in st. louis at washington university, the site of the next big showdown, the second presidential debate. we're beginning, of course, with the republican party in meltdown. facing a political disaster really unlike anything we've seen in modern times. a few hours from now here at washington university, donald trump will take the stage to battle with his own political survival. we're now less than a month before election day. top leaders of trump's own party are banning together. there is this growing drumbeat of an exodus here. it comes after a stunning video

revealed trump in 2005 casually talking about what many people say is sexual assault. he has apologized. but trump's own running mate is refusing to defend him. senator john mccain saying he will write in a candidate for president. former republican secretary of state condoleeza rice righting, enough, he should withdraw. that's easier said than done. meantime, hillary clinton is planning how to approach trump's vulgar remarks and personal attacks he may lob at her during the debate tonight. more than 80 million people expected to tune in tonight capping off one of the most extraordinary weekends in american political history. as his party spirals into chaos, donald trump is refusing to back down. joining me outside the venue is cnn national correspondent sun land certificate patty. >> it is easy to jump off into

vice president as an anchor here in this situation. let's bring in errol lewis, cnn commentator to talk about this what mike pence's role will be moving forward. let's talk about what we're hearing from pence and of course that stunning statement from his running mate, donald trump's running mate, criticizing what trump said, that he cannot defend those comments. people for more than a day have been waiting for mike pence to weigh in. >> yeah. i don't think we'll hear much different. in mike pence, you have somebody who consistently describes himself as christian and a conservative and a republican in that order. you know, the tape is just not something that squares with that. he has the choice of either shredding his entire political identity. he's a political professional who wants a future in this business or trying to sort of defend the indefensible.

he's clearly looking out for himself a little bit there. it's the last thing the trump campaign needs at this point. for somebody who like pence to come ou and vouch for trump in a full-throated way would maybe start to right the ship but pence is not willing do that. it's in part, victor, because there are more tapes out there. there is more stuff out there. we've already heard things from the howard stern show that surface hd hours after the damning tape from "access hollywood." there are others on twitter saying there's a ton more out there from the apprentice and everywhere else. there have been a lot of hot mike situations. this is why career politicians like mike pence are headed for the hills. >> the "wall street journal" is reporting that mike pence spoke with a group of republican donors saying that he is fully committed to donald trump. pence's team saying that the claims that he is going to bolt from the ticket, those are

categorically false. is that just a line to get donald trump through the debate or are you expecting that continued full-throated support, that full-throated endorsement of donald trump after tonight's debate? >> as a practical matter, this notion that you can simply have donald trump vanish and put mike pence in his place, that's not reality. there are many states that are -- they've printed and issued ballots. there are thousands of votes already cast since the early voting and absentee voting. it's not as if you can reconvene the republican convention. something along those lines would have to happen. you would have the same 1237 delegates together and have them all agree. it's not realistic. mike pence has no choice at this point but to ride this thing out. i think what we are going to see is him and other conservatives trying to maybe explain to trump

that there's a process. you have to humble yourself and ask for forgiveness from the american people and from the specific individual he was talking about in crude and obscene terms. there's a path back. in mike pence's statement, you can see him sort of suggesting what it is. he talks about him praying for trump's family. there's going to have to be a show of family, of faith, of prayer, of forgiveness and then maybe, just maybe that plus a really strong debate performance tonight could get him back on track. >> we'll see if that happens. many say that donald trump has 90 minutes to save his campaign. the 90 minutes of debate tonight. errol louis, thanks for being with us. >> thank you. of course, we'll continue our special live coverage of the second presidential debate here from washington university. i'll send it back to you christi in atlanta. >> thank you so much, victor. we're talking about this campaign and the fact that it's unlike any other. republicans find themselves at

welcome back. i'm victor blackwell, live from the set of the second presidential debate. site of the debate. i'm just outside the set. ohio governor john kasich says that donald trump's actions and words on that 2005 audiotape are disgusting. but unlike many of his gop colleagues, he's stopping short of calling for trump to drop out of the race. governor kasich talked with our dana bash late yesterday. while speaking of other elected republicans, he said this. they've kind of come to this

party late. i appreciate their view, but i don't think i need to do any more at this point. nobody has been clear about their feelings toward him or not many as i have been. you have a republican national committee and they have to figure this out. joining me now, cnn political commentator and former romney public policy director and senior adviser to the trump campaign, jack kingston. good morning to both of you. >> lonnie, i want to start with you. you're here with me. we heard from pennsylvania congressman, charlie dent yesterday, saying that reince priebus, head of the republican national convention has to fix this. if he can't, he needs to retire. >> this is an republican national convention issue. there is clearly something they can do about this. it's actually a good thing for the republicans down ticket. that ultimately, victor is the big question. how can republicans save their down ticket candidates? i think the presidential race is largely a lost cause. the issue is how does the

republican party hang on to the senate and the house and if there's a way for the rnc to engineer this and do this, that would be preferable. >> a lost cause, jack kingston, you say what? >> i don't agree with my friend lanhee on this. tonight will be huge. he needs to joe apology, contrition, again even more and he has to pivot and say, you know what, the question still boils down to who do you want to name the next members of the supreme court? who do you want to decide national security and immigration skpurt policy and who do you want to return jobs? i think that if donald trump can do that, that's a big, big order. but if he can do that tonight, he will be in the ball game. i think next few days are also critical. he's got to have a flawless campaign. but the logistics and as you know, some people have already

voted, overseas ballots mailed. those ballots of every single county in the country have been printed. the idea of switching candidates at this points, i don't think gets you back in the game either. he needs to hit the ball out of the park and show that's a serious candidate. >> that's the calculation of the democrats as well. they've determined there is no way that this would be a switch to put pence at the top of the ticket and bring in another candidate. let's put up on the screen the names and faces of many in congress who have said they will not vote for donald trump. i mean, look at this list. these faces here. a gallery of republicans who either at some point said they were going to support donald trump or simply support the nominee whomever that would be. we now know it's trump who are pulling back. how does he stop this? >> i think, again, tonight's performance is key. the next couple of days are

going to be key. he still has to get back out there in the game and say the difference boils down to hillary clinton, a third term of barack obama, if you will, or me. i am an element of -- these are all my friends. but their first instinct is self-preservation. if somebody comes along and says something or does something they're uncomfortablew they have to protect their own program, if you will. but the thing is, he still is our nominee. so many of these people participated more in the primary process if they were that uncomfortable with them. >> however, many of those variables that you named that donald trump has to reiterate tonight were in place when the senators and congressmen made the decision to retract their support for the nominee. lanhee, two endorsements or faces, mitch mcconnell, paul

ryan. how long can they sit essentially on the fence? >> i don't think much longer. i think they've got to make a decision. it's untenable to say, i don't agree with what donald trump says, i don't like what he said. but by the way, i think he should be the leader of of the free world. both the speaker and the leaders have to make decisions over the next few days. i think the debate, tonight's debate will be criticalment donald trump has an opportunity to show contrition, genuine contrition in the first five minutes of the debate to potentially turn things around. i think he's too far gone. i think the comments were so vile and upsetting to so many americans -- >> there's potentially more. >> there very well could be. >> are you saying he can stop the bleeding or he can do a 180 here? >> no. i think he can stop the bleeding. i think the presidential contest -- i think donald trump is going -- i think this could be an epic and colossal loss of

24 minutes past the hour. grate foul have you with us. hurricane matthew is ripping up the east coast today. it is weakening but the danger is still very much intact here. the major concern is the record breaking flooding. in north carolina, they're dealing with some of it already. look at the roads. i mean, it looks like a lake. cars abandoned as you see there. if gu to georgia, look how powerful the winds are. the trees like this, huge trees out of the ground. the storm has left now ten people dead. we've got people dead in north carolina, in georgia, in florida and of course, the hundreds in haiti. cnn meteorologist derek van dam is in the weather center right now. help us understand, derek, how dangerous this storm still is and where it's headed. >> hard to believe we've been tracking it over two weeks, christi, but the storm has a narrow window of time to cause any more damage.

we're talking about hours, not days any longer. we certainly don't want to see any more scenes like this. this is the latest watches and warnings from the national weather service. we're focusing in on cape hatteras and north carolina. you can see the copious amounts of rain that continue to move across the delmarva peninsula and into virginia. there's a cold front that will sweep the storm system out to sea. you have to see how much rain has fallen. it's been significant as this hurricane moves along the entire east coast of the united states. it brought down a significant amount of precipitation. we're talking about over 17 inches in a few different locations just outside of savannah at the hunter air force base. look at fayetteville, north carolina. over 14 inches of rain in a short period of time. that is why we have the flood threat ongoing. the sewage, drainage system cannot hold up to this and the rivers are still going to flood even after the rain ends.

this last night, what does that tell us about what we're going to see tonight? >> it tells us that he may be intending to make good on his threat to dredge up all of this stuff from decades past and throw it at hillary clinton and try to make a connection in voters' minds. what makes that tricky, christi is that this is a town hall-style format in which case, he'll have to be doing this in response to questions from legitimate undecided voters who are noncombatants in this war between the past and the present and the republicans and the democrats. it will be awkward to say the least, i think, if someone asks him about his own discretions for him to turn and pivot and attack bill clinton and what he may or may not have done in the 1990s. >> how will hillary clinton react is going to be closely watched. >> well, it's interesting, she has not as far as i can tell, telegraphed how she intends to

respond. keep in mind, this is a complicated case. to the republican faithful, the base votes, the conservatives who listen to a lot of talk radio, this is all rote, been talked about over and over again. for everybody else, you have to go back and figure out the case, who was juanita broderick, what did bill clinton do or not do. what did hillary clinton do or not do? unless you can make that case succinctly, the whole thing leaves people mystified rather than drawing them to trump's side. >> only have a couple seconds left. hillary clinton most likely facing her own scrutiny over the e-mails that were recently released by wikileaks where you -- that was one of the lines used in the wall street speeches. how much do you think she's going to have to be on the defensive tonight? >> well, assuming somebody can bring that up to tell you the

gop event yesterday in wisconsin. despite this, he's standing by donald trump. staying with his running mate. dozens of other republicans, though, they are not. they're calling for trump to drop out of the race. some are suggesting that pence take his place at the top of the ticket. let's talk about that and bring inlahnee chen. former policy director. also joined bip former u.s. representative jack kingston. lanee i'm going to start with you because you're sitting next to me. is this realistic, a possibility that mike pence will take the top of the ticket here? >> i don't think it is. i think most people concluded that people are already voting by early voting. donald trump will be the republican on the ticket. the question is, what can the rnc and the republicans do po preserve their possibility of holding the house and the senate. that's what this is about. i'm not sure mike pence is the

guy. if there were a replacement, mike pence did not run for president in this cycle. there are a lot of guys and gals who did run. they ought to be looked at first. >> he didn't earn a single delegate in the primary. congressman, what is the relationship -- you're a senior adviser to the campaign. you're on the inside between donald trump and mike pence right now. we heard and it seems like the vice presidential debate was decades ago. it was really five days ago now. but after the debate there was reporting that donald trump is not happy that his running mate didn't defend him. now we're getting a statement from the vice presidential nominee that he's not going to defend him against this. give us an insight into how they're doing right now. >> i don't know where those reports came from. because i heard them also. i can say that the two men have a great relationship. their wives have great relationships and their families do as well. not only that, but mike pence is a loyal guy.

he's a team player. i think i know mike very, very well. i think he was correct in saying he could not defend those comments. however, in totality of a choice between somebody who is a long-term big government liberal versus somebody who wants to change washington, d.c., somebody who wants to challenge the culture there, that mike pence is on the right ticket. i think that that's what we need to see out of mike and out of donald trump this week is that pivot to say, you know what, said a lot of bad things 10, 11 years ago. i'm knot the same man. i can tell you this personally speaking, victor, he is not the donald trump that i've come to know or his family. >> we're not seeing that pivot, congressman. we're not seeing that pivot. donald trump went to twitter and retweeted juanita broderick. he didn't retweet anything about an economic plan, bringing jobs back. he retweeted juanita broderick.
