allegations of the people on stage. here's what the cnn scientific poll says. 57% of the debate watchers to 34% say clinton won. half of men watching agreed. that said, i think it is safe to say donald trump benefitted from low expectation. 63% of debate watchers say he exceeded their expectations. 39% felt clinton exceeded their expectations. we should point out this type of poll the night after is not going to be as well weighted as normal polls. this skews more democratic. >> let's discuss this debate with our panel. we have political commentator matt lewis and mark preston and analyst for the daily beast jackie kucinich and maeve reston

and david gregory. >> i do because of the context. donald trump should have been on the ropes. i think hillary clinton could have put him out to pasture last night. the narrative could have been the race is all over. instead, donald trump is harry houdini. he managed to escape and survive. any normal person or conventional candidate would have gone in the debate like the kid who forgot to do his homework. you show up and contrite and on defense. instead, donald trump what only donald trump would do. goes on offense. takes it to hillary clinton. i think she was on defense most of the night. i was surprised. i think this subject has been changed. we are talking about a debate. not just about what he said on access hollywood. >> david, how did you see it? >> i see it differently.

i do agree that trump exceeded expectation. he seemed more comfortable. he seemed more prepared. he was certainly on the attack. i think we have to think about the context in which this is happening. his campaign has been slipping before the release of the crude tape. the tape now happens. it has blown up his campaign and the republican establishment with republicans finally finding some courage because of these remarks to separate themselves from him. now he's in a new reality where the tape is really going hurt him. if we keep talking about the debates, what do most americans think about donald trump? he doesn't have the temperament nor qualifications to be president. so as well as he did last night attacking hillary clinton, he was speaking to his core supporters. look at the pennsylvania poll. he's losing by over 20 points among college educated voters in a must-win state for him. did he change minds among those who are rejecting him at this point by going into all the

clinton bad behavior and by accusing her of having hate in her heart by saying he would jail her? like he is a third world dictator if he were president? that is my question if he was able to move anything last night with that performance. >> so, mark, anderson cooper, got right to the tape right off the top of the debate. and questioned trump. let's play again his response. >> for the record, are you saying what you said on that bus 11 years ago that you did not actually kiss women without consent? >> i have great respect for women. nobody has more respect for women than i do. >> for the record, you are saying you didn't say that? >> i was embarrassed by it, but i have tremendous respect for him. >> i will tell you, no i have not. >> so did he dispense with it? >> nobody has more respect for women than he does. >> it was outrageous what

happened. look at the situation we're in right now. the bar is one inch off the ground. he cleared it by three inches. all of a sudden, just because he was able to go in and not actually answer one policy question with an ounce of policy in it, that he was able to roll out three women who have accused bill clinton of some kind of sexual advances or in some case assault or rape. they sit in the audience. try to put somebody who says i want to jail my political opponent. you know, he survived to live another day. his supporters are going to back him. he will not get the middle anymore. there are voters in pennsylvania he could have gotten that he will not get. the state's gone. florida is probably gone. there's no path to victory for donald trump. while he seemed measured last night because he wasn't totally off the hook, he was still donald trump and off the hook.

what we saw was an indictment of our political system. it is unfortunate what we saw. >> just in case you exercised the practice not to watch last night, donald trump admitted through saying bill clinton has done worse. here is the piece. >> if you look at bill clinton, far worse. mine are words. his were action. what he has done to women, there has never been anybody in the history of politics in the nation so abusive to women. hillary clinton attacked the same women and attacked them viciously. four of them are here tonight. when hillary brings up the point like that and she talks about words that i said 11 years ago. i think it is disgraceful. i think she should be ashamed of herself if you want to know the truth. >> jackie, the irony is with bill clinton, you have him never acknowledging any of those

allegations. you had donald trump in his words admitting he had done the things he is accusing clinton o of. >> does that work with anybody outside of the realm that will never vote for donald trump? >> bill clinton is not on the the ballot. a lot of the things trump says about bill clinton comes out of conspiracy theory land. things from ed klein's book and roger stein. no, i don't think it matters. if you didn't watch the debate, particularly if you were a woman. he interrupted her all night and he loomed over her. it was creepy to watch it. that is an image. i don't know the allegations that have been thrown around since the '90s will eat into hillary clinton.

>> reporter: she did seem certainly a little bit off balance in the first question and no doubt was rattled by this. this was a surprise to the clinton team. we were all around them at the time this came out and rushing past to go watch the facebook live that donald trump had done with these accusers. so clearly that did get her up on guard for the beginning of the debate. i do think she regained her pacing and her step and you know, the fact that donald trump was doing all that bizarre wandering around the stage and looming over her. i think his body language was so different from hers. she was fully in control of her space and actually talking to people. that's what you came away within terms of her demeanor. >> we also have a body expert coming up.

republic. i saw somebody online saying if you are an africanamerican, politicians are held accountable just like we are. it is in the eye of the beholder. >> there is another way to interpret it. the divisiveness and hate-fueled speech of the election will not be over. if he is elected president, it will continue and we will continue the vendetta against hillary clinton. that's what he is promising to do. >> not just him. he has clearly made it through the campaign that if he doesn't like you, then, you know, he will punch you five times. he will try to take you out. he will do whatever he can to give you pain. in fact, it was telling at the very, very end of debate when they had to say something nice about each other. what did he say about her? she's a fighter. he is one combative guy. look, what we saw last night, yes, i absolutely agree with

you. at least maeve is saying politicians are held accountable. he said i'll put you in jail. >> this is not just him impugning hillary clinton and going after hillary clinton. what he is talking about here is making a spurious claim that she did something illegal. the head of the fbi james comey. former justice department official said this wasn't a close call if there were criminal charges here. all the political commentators here said anybody else would be thrown in jail. james comey said this is not say close call. what trump does is attacking clinton. he is attacking key pillars of the judicial system. this goes to how unhinged he sounds and whether it falls on sympathetic ears on supporters.

all those people who don't like hillary clinton, you know that goes too far. we will track this i think at some of the reaction. >> i felt like we were at a rally at times. it was the same things we hear at trump rallies. you heard some of the crowd start cheering. that fueled him. i don't know he was thinking it through that may sound like he is a dictator. i think he was going through what works on the stump. >> the taxes came up last night. donald trump tried to -- let's hear what he said about his taxes and you can take it. >> you have not answered a simple question. did you use that $916 million loss to avoid paying personal income tax. >> of course, i do. so do all of her donors or most of her donors. i will tell you i pay tremendous numbers of taxes. i absolutely used it. so did warren buffett and george

soros. >> so, maeve, it's legal. what's the beef? >> that is the only thing donald trump could give. to jackie's point, if you think about the target audience, the audience is white, college educated women. the combination with donald trump's body language and saying he would throw hillary clinton in jail. that is not going to go over well with the people he needs to win over. especially after the emergence of the tape and everything else. it was playing to his base not expanding to the audience that he really needs if he thinks he can win this race. at this point, it is an uphill climb. >> matt, let's talk about the point of difference two donald trump and mike pence about their

policy and what they would do in syria. listen to this. >> i don't like assad at all. but assad is killing isis. russia is killing isis. and iran is killing isis. >> i want to remind you what your running mate said. he said provocations by russia need to be met with american strength. if russia continues to be involved in air strikes along with the syrian government forces of assad, the united states of america should be prepared to use military force to strike the military targets of the assad regime. >> okay. he and i haven't spoken and i disagree. i disagree. >> well, so first of all, this is a fallout from the mike pence debate where mike did a fabulous job of actually defending donald trump. in some cases reinterpreting donald trump. obviously there was a dichotomy of what mike pence's donald

trump beliefs. maybe they are lucky this is as big as it gets in terms of the dissidence. this was interesting. this is life imitating art. "saturday night live" had a line of how great mike pence is and the moderator says mike pence disagrees with you and he attacks. >> he did not criticized mike pence. >> he said they haven't spoken. >> that will be seen as candor by him. pence is a guy who says i'm a christian first and decency is his middle name. he has refused to condemn what he used to condemn about donald trump before he became the nominee. now he will come out and he still hasn't said anything about the tape. how high a bar for him this morning? >> well, he is not going to defend it. he said he can't be an effective

around in north carolina is not easy. there are roadblocks everywhere because flooding is everywhere. on i-95, parts of it is still flooded. this as communities are battling with flood damage. we spoke to one woman who lives in a neighborhood in fayetteville, north carolina. one road which was a dam washed out by flood waters. there is only one access road for them to get in and out of the community. that is precarious for them, too. they say if that depogoes, over homes are isolated. now greenville authorities expecting 300 buildings to be in jeopardy. flood waters continue to be an issue. they say there will likely be an issue the rest of the week. >> thank you, stephanie. keep us updated. back to what we saw or lived through last night.

we have jennifer granholm. ladies, thank you for being here. governor, i'll start with you. did donald trump effectively divert attention from his alleged sexual abuses to bill clinton's alleged sexual abuses? >> he sure tried. obviously the press conference was an effort to do that. he went right back at it during the debate. ultimately what will live on is the tape from friday and the other scores of anti-women and anti-immigrant and anti-you name it comments he made. from the very first question, hillary clinton tried to keep it at a higher level. she talked about standing together in response to the first question which was a question about how teachers and

others can make sure their children are proud of this. she tried to respond in that way. from the very first question, donald trump brought it down and continued to keep it down although she continued to try to bring it back invoking michelle obama, et cetera. he tried to get the burden off of him, but ultimately, he will not be able to do that. he needed a game changer last night. he did not get it. >> do you think that it will work with the base and maybe a layer outside of it last night, eventually he said i never did those things i said on the tape. will that work? >> absolutely. you look at it. women sit here have watched magic mike or fifty shades of gray. they are turning around and accusing trump. there is nothing in the media. >> there are accusations. cnn has sources that he actually did force kisses.

>> a rape case in the new york federal court. there is a rape case in the federal court right now. we don't probe it because they are unsubstantiated allegations. in the video, he said he did things. he said he did things. last night, he said, i never did those things. do you think that is enough? >> locker room talk. the reason the women were present is not about bill clinton, but how hillary clinton treated those women. all donald trump was doing is taking her advice. she said those women, any woman who has been under sexual harassment or form of abuse they need to be heard and stories listened to. he gave the women a chance. >> he called them an ugly list of accusers and it was wrong for bill clinton to be impeached. >> at that time, he was not the wife that stood by. >> explain it. he is a private citizen. he said this is one ugly bunch of accusers you got here.

then he says to clinton, this is a disgrace. now he is running for office. that makes it okay that and fill in the blank. >> compared to what bill clinton did with the actions and now it is the words versus the actions. >> trump. >> i know. he has given them the platform to be heard within the media. >> he said impeaching him was wrong. now he is running for office. it is okay. you run for office. bs is okay? >> bill clinton was not impeached because of the four women. he was impeached what he did to a barely legal woman in office. he turned around and lied to the american people for it. the reason we are missing is the important line of the trump campaign. he gave hillary clinton a compliment. the compliment every woman strives personally and professional achieves from anyone she works with.

he said she doesn't quit. she doesn't give up. she's a fighter and i respect that. that is amazing for women. >> he also said he would put her in jail. it is hard to know how he feels about that. i want to move on. governor, did hillary clinton do what she had to do? she also diverted when asked about bill clinton and allegations and the accusers right there. she did not take that head on. let me play for you her response when she was asked. listen to this. >> let me start by saying that so much what he just said is not right. he gets to run his campaign any way he chooses. he gets to decide what he wants to talk about instead of answering questions and talking about our agenda and laying out the plans that we have that we think can make a better life and a better country. that's his choice. when i hear something like that, i am reminded of what my friend michelle obama advised us all.

when they go low, you go high. >> governor, she got a lot of applause. does she ever have to respond to how she treated the women who were accusers of bill clinton? >> you guys have all done fact checking on all this. you know the answer. the point she was making and why ken starr didn't call these women and all that. the point she is making is she will not litigate something that was a painful part of her marriage in this race. she is going to be talking about people about going forward. she did that in every answer last night. she was very clear. she had three points for each of the policies. she knew exactly what she was going to say. she wanted to let people know what she will do for them. looking back all those years to what bill clinton did and how that painful part of her marriage is not something that she wants to replay again. she will not take the bait. that whole thing was a take the

bait moment where he wanted to dangle something and she decided she would not go for that bait. >> governor granholm and scottie, thank you. more and more republicans are abandoning donald trump after the tape. did trump do anything to stop the defections? we will look at that ahead. when i was a little kid, i made a deal with myself

soon after the scandal would be bad news for trump. now it is good news. they spent 20 minutes talking about the scandal and then talked about aleppo and benghazi. now we are not talking about billy bush. >> give me one thing he said last night that you were impressed by as to what to do to make the situation better. >> i don't know i can say that about either of them. i thought his answer on the tax question where he says i did not pay taxes, but you know, neither did hillary's donors. in the first debate, she baited him and he fell for it. that didn't happen last night. >> go ahead, david. >> chris, for people for republicans who are now feeling safe enough to politically abandon him, i think they will

vote. i don't necessarily said he has mitigated that. i think matt's writing changes a bit. the clinton campaign will have all this material they will use in ads, whether put her in jail or him doubling down on his offensive talk was locker room talk and nothing more. they will use these things. college educated voters. look how well she is doing with college educated voters in pennsylvania. a state he has to win if he wants to get a path to 270. >> hold on. i want to tell people about the two dozen republicans who have jumped off the trump train after that access hollywood videotape when they said they can no longer support him. they are withdrawing endorsements. there was some talk, probably wishful thinking, but critics, that the rnc would replace him.

>> which is impossible. >> he stopped that hemorrhages. >> yes, but there are two phone calls taking place. one with house republicans to figure out where they are with donald trump and one with the rnc members. >> they cannot replace him. >> they cannot replace him, but can withdraw support and cut off financial ties to cripple a campaign which is already crippled. >> less likely to happen. >> the damage is done. those members were not coming back. the clinton campaign has that. particularly with the video. if women were repulsed by that. >> so jackie, not just hillary clinton, but the personification of women in power. you are standing next to a guy who admitted that he is able to do things are inappropriate with women. she says nothing about it last night. she never looks at him. she never has a look of disgust

on her face. she never calls him out. why? >> she said it made him unfit. >> unfit? when do you ever call anybody that when you are angry in life? >> fair enough. she didn't need to. this was devastating. you saw them let it happen all day on friday. they didn't really weigh in. >> you don't think that's a mistake? >> can i weigh in? quickly. the reason why is by weighing in and going toe-to-toe with donald trump, it would draw attention to the four women in the audience. four who accused bill clinton. >> maeve, what is your take on why she did not take that on? >> i think she boxed herself in from the beginning of the debate by repeating michelle obama's line that when they go low, we go high. i think that she was less aggressive than she could have been. there seemed to be a lot of

missed opportunities for her. she had an even performance, but missed opportunities to circle back to the tape and remind people of it. to david's point earlier, she and her allies are up with ads using that tape. i think they were trying to let the issue breathe without her doing too much. she could have gone at him harder on that. >> i don't think she needed to. let him talk. that's their strategy. she made the most devastating attack which is this tape goes to the larger issue of fitness for office. the polling has been on her side. i'll be watching in the next week to see if he moves any numbers with regard to qualifications or temperament to be president. not just have you salvaged hillary clinton. >> panel, thank you for sharing your thoughts. hillary clinton won last night's presidential debate rematch according to cnn's poll of debate watchers. how did she do among men and how did trump fare with women? we have the highs and lows of
