other tougher things that hillary clinton was challenged with, there she was, definitely. >> i thought for donald trump it was kind of a 40% solution. i agree with maggie completely. he was at risk today and this week of a catastrophic bottom falling out with republicans renouncing him. first of all, on saturday, more republicans abandon his campaign than we've seen for a republican nominee in any 24-hour period since teddy roosevelt and his supporters left the 1912 convention. that's not hyperbole. that is literally true. the risk of that continuing, obviously, would have been annihilating for the trump campaign. i think what he did most successfully, particularly in the middle part of the debate, he reminded people he is a republican. he was at his best when he was most conventional. i'll repeal obama care and repeal the clean power plan and
3:11 am
prosecute hillary plan. it made it harder for other republicans to walk away from him today. but it did very little to expand him from beyond where he is which is why a 40% solution. i think hillary clinton behaved like someone who thought they were ahead and trying to reassure the country and work for all americans and work across party lines. i don't think it was cautious as it was spoofed that they won't take a lot of risks. we'll see if that is premature. trump did what he needed to do in the middle part of the debate and at the end he struggled on foreign policy and three yards and a cloud of dust, conventional republicanism and it worked very well for him. >> did that work for him? >> i think she was prepared for that. i don't think she was spooked. i think she was a lawyer at a deposition. she wanted to commit him to certain things. the fact that he said this was nothing but locker room talk three, four times.

around last night, it really did feel like it was an "snl" sketch. you know, life imitating art. let's play what happened on "snl" this week. >> i deeply apologize. >> are you trying to say apologize. >> no, i would never do that. what am i doing is apologizing to all the people who were offended by my statements. >> but, mr. trump. why would you say these horrible things in the first place? >> come on, brooke, i was trying to look cool. i mean, what normal red blooded american doesn't want to impress the billy bush? >> billy bush, by the way, now suspended by nbc for his comments on that tape. >> what about that. let's talk about that. he's not going to have a job any more at nbc because -- this is from many years ago. billy bush came out and said i am ashamed and embarrassed of what i said. >> very forthright apology. my sense from nbc sources is

that he will probably not be back on "today" show but for right now only suspended. >> an interesting thing to think. he is suspended or perhaps fired for what he said. the other guy is running still to be the head of the free world. despite what he said. >> that juxtaposition is just striking. >> two questions i have after last night. number one, are there more tapes? we don't know if there are more tapes like the one from 2005 not only from "access hollywood" but other sources. what about the third debate. he has already played that. >> you got an answer, though, last night. hillary clinton took him on on none of the allegations that he made against her. >> right. >> personal in nature. at most would say it's wrong. go look at my website. do you think she's seeding that ground that her campaign says, you will not win anyone over if they believe any of this stuff. >> i don't think she is in the same position. does she need to win over that audience? he needed to win a new audience.

he played to his base. she played it safe. she's playing to prevent defense i think now. that's the way i interpreted it anyway. she's not really being aggressive because she doesn't think she has to be. >> thanks. here is one thing that is true, we have never seen anything like what happened last night. let's get to the coverage. >> i'm not proud of it, but this is locker room talk. i hate it, but it's locker room talk. >> we have seen him insult women. embarrass women. this is who donald trump is. >> if you look at bill clinton, far worse. mine are words, his was action. >> everything he just said is absolutely false. >> you think it was fine to delete 33,000 e-mails. i don't think so. >> i would like to get the questions. >> and get off this okay, donalt off of your campaign and how it

is exploded. good morning, everyone. welcome to your "new day." up first, hillary clinton and donald trump taking very personal shots at each other in last night's debate in what is being called the ugliest presidential debate in american history. clinton hitting trump over that bombshell video saying his vulgar comments about women reveal exactly who he is. >> we expected this to be ugly and yet it was still disappointing. trump pacing the stage and ignoring questions as anything other than opportunities to attack the clintons. he actually had the nerve to say she is the one with tremendous hate in her heart. he threatened to jail her if he is elected. we're now nine days until the final debate and people are voting right now and there are only 29 days to the big election day. we have it all covered. let's begin with manu live in st. louis, the scene of the crime. >> hey, chris. actually, we knew this debate was going to be nasty, even
4:00 am
before it began. that's when donald trump had a photo opportunity with reporters and brought along several women who have accused bill clinton of sexual misconduct from the 1990s. and thern whn when the two cands got on the stage, they did not even shake hands and then the n insults began and then he was asked about the "access hollywood" video. and while he apologized, he also dismissed it. >> hello. >> reporter: donald trump entered last night's debate with one major goal. to end the crisis engulfing hi s campaign. after a tape of his vulgar remarks about groping women from 2005 was uncovered. >> this was locker room talk. i'm not proud of it. i apologized to my family. i apologized to the american people. >> reporter: cnn's anderson cooper pressing trump over his crude comments about forcing himself on women. trump denying
