he claims it is rigged. >> reporter: suggesting her e-mail use is disqualifying. >> she should not be allowed to run. she is guilty of a serious crime. >> reporter: clinton changing the subject of her wall street speeches to russia and pressuring the gop nominee to condemn russia for hacking and stealing democratic records. trump taking the bait. >> will donald trump admit and condemn the russians are doing this and make it clear that he will not have the help of putin in this election and he rejects russian espionage against americans which he encouraged in the past. >> i don't know putin. he said nice things about me. if we got along well, that would be good. if russia and the united states got along well and went after isis, that would be good. he has no respect for her. he has no respect for our

president. from everything i see, has no respect for this person. >> that's because he would rather have a puppet as president. >> no puppet. >> you condemn the interference? >> of course. >> reporter: donald trump interrupting. >> a clear fact. >> wrong. excuse me. such a nasty woman. >> reporter: donald trump did have a strong start. issues that play well with conservatives. like abortion. >> based on what she is saying and where she is going and where she has been, you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month on the final day. that's not acceptable. >> using that kind of scare rhetoric is just terribly unfortunate. you should meet with some of the women that i met with. women i've known over the course of my life. this is one of the worst possible choices that any woman and her family has to make.

and i do not believe the government should be making it. >> reporter: trump going as far as claiming his pro life supreme court picks would ought mat cally overturn roe v. wade. >> when it comes to the wall, he went to mexico, he had a meeting with the mexican president. did not raise it. he choked. >> i had a very good meeting with the president of mexico. very nice man. >> reporter: trump raising eyebrows with this response to the question of deporting millions of undocumented immigrants. >> once the border is secured, we will make a determination as to the rest. we have some bad hombres here and we will get them out. >> reporter: and once again rejecting the growing number of accusations from several women of making unwanted advances. >> thought stories are all totally faulse. i didn't apologize to my wife who is sitting here because i

did not do anything. i don't know these women. these women, the woman on the plane, the woman -- i think they want either fame or her campaign did it. i think it is her campaign. >> donald thinks belittling women makes him bigger. he goes after their dignity and their self worth. i don't think there is a woman anywhere who doesn't know what that feels like. so we now know what donald thinks and what he says and how he acts toward women. that is who donald is. >> reporter: now immediately after the debate, republican officials tried to clean up donald trump's remarks that he would not accept the election results. including kellyanne conway and reince priebus saying that of course he will. republican critics of donald trump were quick to jump on his remarks.

linds lindsey graham saying like most americans i have confidence in the election system. during the debate, mr. trump is doing the party and country a great disservice by continuing to say the election is out of his hands and rigged against him. if he loses, it will not be because the system is rigged, but because he failed as a candidate. clearly that remark overshadowing the conversation. and putting republicans in a difficult spot going forward. chris and alisyn. >> you saw a division, manu, of the party saying through reince priebus and now kellyanne conway. team trump wants to keep u suspense to this. obviously we do a poll overnight to figure out what happened. these polls are scientific, but they are different. they overnight. 52% to 39%. that means that clinton won all three of them, according to our

poll. more than half polled say the debate is not going to change their minds. 88% of people say nothing will change their mind about who they will vote for. you see trump and clinton split on the debate. made you more likely to vote for. a little bit of a subtle indication there. the debate watchers in our poll skew slightly for the democrats. mike pence did win our overnight poll last night. >> let's discuss this with our panel. we have cnn analyst ron brownstein. we have david gregory and political analyst jackie kucinich and abby phillips. great to have you here. david, was the defining moment for you the i'll keep voters in suspense? >> i thought after a strong hour after momentum for trump as more

of a republican and sounding like a conservative, i think this was a death blow for him. not abiding by the traditions of the country to accept the election results. somebody wants to make america great again and wants to undermine our democracy. it goes to the core of that problem for trump which is most americans don't think he has the temperament to be president. i think that was just the best evidence you could find. >> why is the suggestion that it could be rigged so i have to wait and see. why isn't that compelling enough to offset what david is saying? >> this is not a stay tuned answer. this is not reality tv show. this is foundational for the united states democracy. and when he said that, you saw on twitter. republicans sort of the air went out. >> they said no, no, no. the election will be legit.

let's play the moment so everybody who did not see it last night can absorb the context of how it came and when it came. >> do you make the same commitment you will absolutely accept the result of the election? >> i will look at it at the time. >> are you saying you are not prepared now to commit? >> i will tell you at the time. i'll keep you in suspense. >> let me respond to that. that is horrifying. every time donald thinks things are not going in his direction, he claims whatever it is is rigged against him. that is not the way democracy works. we have been around for 240 years. we had free and fair elections. we accepted the outcomes when we may not have liked them. that must be expected of anyone standing on a debate stage during a general election. >> you see the context of how it came up and why it came up. do you think he was upset that wallace was coming on the him.

if you are trying to make him say something, he may double down in the other direction. >> that seemed to me poor preparation and stubbornness on his part. this is the obvious question. this has been discussed all week. everybody knew it was coming. he knew what the answer should have been. mike pence knows the answer. kellyanne conway knows the answer. he refuses to say it because he doesn't believe it. that's the problem. there is no willingness to stick with the plan and move forward according to what everybody knows is the right thing to do. he will go with his instincts and that backed him into a corner. >> ron? what is your take? >> i agree with david. you are talking about a candidate whose greatest object s obstacle who doesn't have the

temperament to be president. then the answer is a departure from the candidate and under scores and reconfirms all this. this debate, he has been at his best when he has been the most generic. a generic republican for the first 45 minutes of the debate and strong abroad and cut spending and socially conservative. he carried that argument effectively. when he got trump-y, russia is not involved and ultimately this, that is when he does the most circumscribed back to the base. >> it forced all of his surrogates come up to clean up on aisle nine. watch what they said in response afterwards. >> i said before and we'll accept the outcome of the election. >> you want mr. trump to make

that clear? >> he said in the first debate. >> and then he took it back. >> he said it in the first debate. >> of course, i think my father will do the right thing. that is the type of person he is. i believe he will accept the outcome. >> he will accept the results because he will win the race. outside of abuse and irregul irregulari irregularity, absolutely. >> this is so hard. it's as if everyone is saying, don't listen to him. don't listen to what he said. he is just the guy who wants to be the leader of the free world. >> actually if you don't win, you lose. you don't just not win. >> that is not in your vocabulary. >> this is the problem. nobody wants to tell donald trump if you lose, you have to concede. >> i think they have told him. i think they have told him.

then in a moment, no, we'll see. >> you used a good word, abby. i wonder if it was stubbornness. wallace cut him off. he said let me finish my question. he doesn't like that. we know that very much. he then -- maybe he got into that mode, ron, you going to check me? i'll check you. he wound up putting himself in a hole where another first. i have never seen staffers trying to clean up something like this. he respects democracy. sure he does. don't listen to what he said. >> of course. i think all of that is true. if he had gone the other way and said what everybody else said, it under cuts what he has been saying on the stump for the last week. and chris, look at new hampshire and look at pennsylvania, look at wisconsin and north carolina. the republican senate nominees are running several points ahead

and several hundred thousand votes ahead of trump on election day. some may win the state even if he loses the state. is the implication of the remarks that those victories and republican senate victories are illegitimate? how does he square the race is stolen against him if there are republicans on the ballot running potentially hundreds of thousands of votes ahead of him. the whole thing implodes on it self and fits in with so many of what we have seen in the last debate where he is speaking more toward mobilizing the disaffected base or having any vision to reach beyond it to what parties say are the actual swing voters. the suburban white collar votes. hard to believe a headline in "the wall street journal" saying you will not accept the

election. >> he was losing as he came into the final debate and didn't do anything to change the reality of the race except for the one deft blow. if you are trying to reach that audience, those swing voters, that is the last thing where he has the judgment. >> and particularly since lots of pundit said he seemed disciplined and prepared. he had an answer about the supreme court. all of the answers at first, if you look at twitter as a temperature of the viewers, people thought he was doing well. >> it is also a low bar for him. even in the media. he had a whole year to keep getting chances he may be able to be president. nobody gets a second chance to show they can be president. let alone a 13th. coming up on "new day" we will hear from campaigns. each side is in spin mode this morning. we will have the democratic vice

but i can see why she didn't really go after him. she really just went through her own talking points and why she wanted to say why she was different and provide a contrast rather than call him on the carpet. this is an issue that donald trump hasn't been consistent on. he had an answer this time. it sounded more like you would hear at a cpac speech rather than presidential debate. it was so far right what he was saying. >> i also think that donald trump was so vague on the issue. the idea of talking about late term abortion and the ninth month gets away from the point of the debate which is at which point is the fetus viable. that is the point where he did not express what he believed the point to be or the dividing line. the ideological dividing line. i don't think he did anything there. he was going for the shock

factor of saying ripped the baby out. that is the word that stuck in everyone's minds. i think hillary clinton probably thought, you know, the point is get away from that. explain why this is a woman's decision and move on. >> again, abby, another good phrase. ron, he was going for it. in sports, they say you are forcing an opportunity. that seemed to happen. it came up last night about experience. he has used this thick well. he used 30 years. you could argue is not accurate in terms of the time clinton has spent. she adopted 30 years also and had a new answer. here's the exchange. >> i say the one thing you have over me is experience. but it is bad experience. what you have done has turned out badly. for 30 years, you have been in position to help. >> back in the 1970s, i worked for the children's defense fund and taking on discrimination against african-american kids in schools.

he was getting sued by the justice department for racial discrimination in his apartment buildings. in 1980s, i was working to reform schools in arkansas. on the day i was in the situation room that brought osama bin laden to justice, he was hosting "celebrity apprentice." >> ron, score that. >> look, i know it was a strong comeback for her. but overall, that exchange worked for both candidates. despite the problems he has in polls, his strongest asset is voters do see him as an agent of change. for the voters who are drawn to him and believe the political system has failed to deal with the problems and problems of the country. the idea he is a wrecking ball from outside the political system is not a demerit, but asset. when you ask who has the

qualifications as president, they played to the offsetting strength in the exchange. others said the first hour of the debate was quite interesting because you had two heavyweights scoring their points before trump veered off into all of the issues that cause him trouble. chris, your first point is worth under scoring. we never had a republican nominee say before if you nominate me, you will see roe v. wade eventually overturned because of the justices i will appoint. it is worth underscoring, that is a majority position in the country. not a majority wants to see roe v. wade overturned. >> what is interesting about this, let's remember the context for the debate. he was losing coming into this. that was a real plus for him and not just add.

an issue here with abortion. going in that direction and saying the litmus test for the supreme court nominee, further alienates him from voters. >> and wallace gave him several chances. he kept hearing his answer and i'm asking you why you feel that way it has to be overturned. he got chances. >> we will talk about chris wallace and how he orchestrated the debate. panel, thank you. hillary clinton and donald trump versus the truth. we are fact checking the most note worthy claims from the debate last night. that's next. >> another first. before taking his team to state for the first time...

>> there's no quote. you will not find a quote from me. >> trump denying he advocated for the expansion of nuclear weapons worldwide. back in march, trump said it may be okay. he said if japan had the nuclear threat, i'm not sure that would be a bad thing for us. and then, a couple of months later, he told cnn he is ready to let japan and south korea become nuclear powers. he also spoke against nuclear proliferation. bottom line, he never advocated for expansion of nuclear weapons in the world. clearly that is false. donald trump was asked about abortion and the supreme court. listen to the exchange. >> do you want to see the court overturn roe v. wade? >> we put another 2 or 3 justices on, that's what will happen. that will happen automatically

russian government has engaged in espionage against americans. >> let's talk controversies with john phillips. a talk radio host for the oc register and simone sanders. she was the national press secretary for bernie sanders primary campaign. john, let's start with you. how do you think hillary clinton addressed the question of wikileaks and whether or not she was in favor of open borders. she said i meant open energy borders. >> i guess brazilian bankers are her billy bush. the right bush. i almost called him jeb. wrong bush. look. it was a moment of clarity. she is for open borders. what we saw in the speech from wikileaks was the truth. >> she said she is not for open immigration borders with people flowing across borders.

did you think it was effective? >> she is not on the debate stage, but among friends, she is. there are serious differences between her and donald trump. she essentially does want some form of amnesty. she doesn't want to crackdown on sanctuary cities. >> okay. simone, she pivoted and said look at the source. you need to know about wikileaks. >> i think she is getting a bit of flack for pivoting to the russians. we cannot ignore the russians are meddling in the election. it is a criminal act. >> the controversy that john is talking about. did she explain if she is against open borders? >> i think she was talking about energy. the question that donald trump was eluding to is about open

immigration borders. that is not true. i think it is very important in the aftermath of the debate we are talking about the facts. facts matter. she is not for open immigration bord borders. she said she was talking about energy. look at the source of the wikileaks. look, if people were physically running around breaking into the democratic national committee, we would have an issue. >> she made that point. >> let's talk about donald trump's controversy. that was the allegation of the women who came forward who he made advances or sexually assaulted. look how he addressed this. >> first of all, those stories have been debunked. those people -- i don't know those people. i have a feeling how they came. i believe it was her campaign that did it. those stories are false. i have to say that. i didn't apologize to my wife who is sitting right here because i didn't do anything. i didn't know any of these

women. i didn't see these women. these women, the woman on the plane, the woman. i think they want either fame or her campaign did it. i think it is her campaign. >> first of all, some of that is false. he does know the "people" magazine reporter. she did a profile on he and his wife. how do you think he handled that? >> that was another pivot. i think he missed an opportunity. not at the debate, but missed an opportunity before. one of the things we learned in the 2008 campaign when president obama had the jeremiah wright controversy. he told the nation where he was coming from. it was a moment of honesty and opening up with the country. i thought that served him well. when it came up later on, that is old news and i discussed it. >> how could trump take a page from that? >> he that's give some kind of explanation. essentially he is denying it and denying it. more women are coming out.

you end up with the question being posed at the debate. i think if he handled it the right way, he could have put this baby to bed long ago. >> what would the right way have been? what would he say about the women who allegedly sexually assaulted. >> you could have addressed the tape on "access ntvencounters we women. >> what did you think? >> i thought donald trump came off insensitive. i thought it was interesting. the challenge was he wants you to believe bill clinton's accusers, but everyone against him is out to get him. that was not effective. people are looking back to the last debate when donald trump trotted the women out. he came out innocensensitive an contradicto contradictory. >> he apologized about the "access hollywood" tape.

>> donald trump said he did not apologize to his wife because he didn't do it. >> it was confusing. >> that moment. i didn't apologize to melania. why say that? what was the point of that? >> i didn't think it came off well. for the women, moderate republican women, the white well who kept the party afloat. >> the clinton foundation. accusations against the clinton foundation and state department with pay to play and access. here is how they addressed it. >> and why isn't what happened and what went on between you and the clinton foundation. why isn't it what mr. trump calls pay to play? >> everything i did as secretary of state is furtherance of our country's interest and values. state department said that. i think that has been proven. i'm happy and thrilled to talk about the clinton foundation. it is a world renowned charity.

i am so proud of the work it does. >> this is an open discussion. i understand. the specific question of pay for play. >> i think -- >> let's ask. >> what happened there was chris wallace was pressing her to answer the question about pay to play. donald trump stepped on it. >> he should have hit her harder. she was on the ropes. this is an election about impulse control. she said he cannot control himself at 3:00 in the morning. she cannot stop her influence on selling through the clinton foundation. >> did she explain it well enough? >> i think hillary clinton -- look, she has been clear. there has been no pay to play. that is the answer they have given before the debate. she was consistent. i think chris wallace was looking for something deeper. i think hillary clinton stayed on and there is no pay to play.
