the race? we have it covered. let's start with political reporter manu >> donald trump needed to reverse his sharply declining poll numbers that we've seen since the beginning, since the first presidential debate and at the beginning of the debate last night an argument that conservatives wanted to hear over the supreme court and abortion and then hillary clinton got under donald trump's skin and then this happened. donald trump refusing to say he will accept the election results. >> i will look at it at the time. i'm not looking at anything now. i'll look at it at the time. >> are you saying you're not prepare. >> i'll tell you at the time. i'll keep you in suspense. >> chris, let me respond to that. that is horrifying. every time donneaw donald think are not going in his direction,
3:01 am
he thinks things are rigged against him. >> reporter: e-mail use is disqualifying. >> she shouldn't be allowed to run. she's guilty of a very, very serious crime. >> reporter: clinton changing the subject from wall street speeches to russia and pressuring the gop nominee to condemn russia for hacking and stealing democratic records. trump taking the bait. >> will donald trump admit and condemn that the russians are doing this and make it it clear that he will not have the help of putin in this election. that he rejects russian espionage against americans, which he actually encouraged in the past. >> i don't know putin. he said nice things about me. if we got along well, that would be good. if russia and the united states got along well and went after isis, that would be good. he has no respect for her. he has no respect for our president. and i'll tell you what, we're in very serious trouble.
3:02 am
from everything i see has no respect for this person. >> well, that's because he'd rather have a puppet as president. >> you condemn their interference. >> reporter: throughout the night, trump repeatedly interrupting and attacking her. >> you're the puppet. wrong. >> a very clear fact that before -- >> excuse me. my turn. such a nasty woman. >> reporter: trump did have a strong start sparring with clinton on issues that play well with conservatives, like abortion. >> based on what she's saying and based on where she's going and where she's been, you can thak the baby and rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month, on the final day and that's not acceptable. >> when using that kind of scare rhetoric is just terribly unfortunate. you should meet with some of the women that i've met with. women i've known over the course of my life. this is one of the worst possible choices that any woman
3:03 am
and her family has to make. and i do not believe the government should be making it. >> reporter: trump even going as far as claiming his pro-life supreme court picks would automatically overturn roe v. wade, something he can't guarantee. later clinton hitting back on immigration. >> we had a meeting with the mexican president and he choked. >> first of all, i had a very good meeting with the president of mexico. very nice man. >> reporter: trump raising eyebrows with this response to the question of deporting millions of undocumented immigrants. >> once the border is secured at a later date we'll make a determination as to the rest. but we have some bad hombres here and we'll get them out. >> reporter: once again, rejecting the growing number of accusations from several women of making unwanted advances. >> because those stories are all totally false. i have to say that. and i didn't even apologize to my wife who is sitting right here because i didn't do anything.
3:04 am
i didn't know any of these women. i didn't see these women. these women, the woman on the plane -- i think they want either fame or her campaign did it. and i think it's her campaign. >> donald thinks belittling women makes him bigger. he goes after their dignity, their self-worth and i don't think there is a woman anywhere who doesn't know what that feels like. so, we now know what donald thinks and what he says and how he acts towards women. that's who donald is. >> and republicans close to the trump campaign realizing how politically damaging his remarks were last night that he may not accept the election results. the rnc chairman saying, of course he would accept the election results but other republican critics jumping on donald trump including jeff flake of arizona tweeting this last night. saying donald trump saying that he might not accept election results is beyond the pale.
3:05 am
similarly voicing concerns including carlos corbello who is in a difficult re-election in south florida and one person who has not weighed in on this yet is house speaker paul ryan. alisyn? >> we'll talk a lot about this. first, who did viewers think won last night's debate? cnn's scientific poll finds 52% of viewers thought clinton won giving a clean sweep of all three presidential debates now. 39% said trump had the better night. more than half of those polled said the debate will not change their mind about who to vote for among those who did feel swayed. trump and clinton essentially split their vote. the debate watchers do skew slightly for the democrats. >> we have senior political analyst and senior editor for "the atlantic" ron brownstein and one bad hombre, david
3:06 am
gregory and washington bureau chief for "daily beast" jackie kosinich and abbie. >> he said i'm going to keep you in suspense. it was the moment of the night. here's how it happened and when it happened in the debate. >> do you make the same commitment that you, sir, that you will absolutely accept the rult results of this election? >> i'll look at it at the time. i'll tell you at the time. i'll keep you in suspense. >> let me respond to that because that's horrifying. you know every time donald thinks things are not going in his direction, he claims whatever it is is rigged against him. that's not the way our democracy worked. we have been around for 240 years. we had free and fair elections. we've accepted the outcomes when we may not have liked them and that is what must be expected of
3:07 am
anyone standing on a debate stage during a general election. >> so, i think this is a death blow for donald trump. i think he had a strong first hour sounding like a more conventional republican. i think which was good news for supporters. good new physical you were looking for him to expand his support and then this. it undermines our democracy. it's way outside the tradition of our democracy and presidential races. it comes in a context of him, again, flirting with putin and praising him, suggesting that he and other world leaders would sit around and talk about how stupid america's leadership is. again, what is it? a majority says he isn't qualified or has the temperament or judgment to be president. i think that sets him further back. >> poses a big challenge for his surrogates. his top peter from his daughter to his vice presidential nominee had to spend time trying to explain what donald trump means
3:08 am
on this point. let's listen. >> i've said before, we'll certainly accept the outcome of this election. >> do you want mr. trump to make that clear. >> well, he said it in the first debate. >> then he took it back. >> he said it in the first debate, folks. >> of course, i think my father will do the right thing. that is the type of person he is. he will either win or won't win. i believe he'll accept the outcome either way. >> donald trump will accept the results of the election because he is going to win and it will be easy to accept. i think i'll be saying congratulations, mr. president. >> they don't like this question coming up and up again. >> there is one right answer to this question. of course i will accept the results. but you've seen mike pence struggle with this. he tried to dismiss it. you saw it as a ridiculous question by the tone of his
3:09 am
voice. but donald trump keeps on undermining his vice president and the rnc chair came out and said, of course he'll accept the results. he's gone back on that. >> first of all, he went farther last night than he ever has before. as you said, that was in the last 24 hours. he doubled down in the worst way on this point. ron brownstein, you made an interesting illusion on this point, what about all the other republicans who are ahead right now? what if they win their races. is he saying their results or is his rigged theory unique only to him? >> implausible argument that almost certainly whatever happens in the presidential race, republicans will win most house races. if you look at states like new hampshire and pennsylvania and wisconsin and north carolina, the republican senate candidate is almost certainly going to run several hundred thousand votes ahead of donald trump.
3:10 am
they may win or may not win. they're going to be ahead of him. is all of that rigged or is that undermined? i looked at that comment as really the explanation point of the story on all of the debates. going into the debates the central question was to go back to what david said. could donald trump reverse the perception. 60% of the country going into the debate said he was not qualified to be president and didn't have the judgement to be the president. that was the central hurdle he faced. that was the central head wind to keep his support in the low 40s. now that we're through all the debates with a remark like that is certainly the underscoring and it is likely that those persepe perceptions are not only hardened, but expanded. he failed at the fundamental test going into the debate and that is really the icing on the cake. >> abbie, nobody wants a constitutional crisis. who is he playing to here? >> what is paradoxical and damaging about this is that he is conceding the race by looking like a sore loser 20 days before election day and voters are
3:11 am
looking at this and they're going outside and picking up their newspapers and it says, donald trump won't accept the results of the election and i think what that says to voters is, this is a man who thinks he is going to lose and doesn't want to accept it and that actually undermines him. he has 20 days left to run this race and he seems to be throwing in the towel by basically calling, you know, fraud before it's even happened. >> so, how do, how do we wind up being wrong in the assessment? what could happen in terms of how this plays, david, that shows trump to be mad like a genius, you know, as opposed to mad at his own demise? >> i just don't know. everything that he's speaking to there is about getting more enthusiasm from his core supporters. i think abby makes a really good point, there are those die-hard trump supporters who feel disillusioned. especially if they haven't been sievically engaged before and they think, what is the point?
3:12 am
the whole thing is rigged against me. the core point is that he was losing the race going into last night's debate and he had an opportunity to try to get some traditional constituencies back. what ron talks about so often, n the college educated voters. >> panel, thank you very much for all of those insights. hold that thought, ron, we'll be back to you at some point. >> we're coming back right after the break and also on "new day" we'll hear from both campaigns. the vice presidential nominee tim kaine will be here and trump campaign manager kellyanne conway will be here in the next hour, as well. donald trump's refusal to accept the election results was the stunning moment of the debate, but it wasn't the only one. also plenty of clashes on policies. we'll break down all of those big moments for you, next. >> i thought there was a bigger one.

the final debate had some harsh exchanges between trump and clinton, as well as personal attacks. >> what we want to do is to replenish -- >> such a nasty woman. from everything i see, has no respect for this person. >> well, that's because he'd rather have a puppet as president. >> no puppet. >> and it's pretty clear. >> once the border is secure at a later date we'll make a determination as to the rest. but we have some bad hombres here and we're going to get them out. >> we have a lot to discuss with our political panel. david gregory, abby, jackie kucinich and ron brownstein. ron, what did you think of those moments? >> there is an answer to chris' question. by any conventional expectation or definition of what the electorate looks like, what donald trump has been doing the last few weeks doesn't make a
3:18 am
lot of sense. because it certainly many of these kind of accusations it the election is rigged against me, i won't accept the results. only deepen the questions about his temperament among the voters to most political analysts look like the swing voters that will decide this thing. donald trump seems to be operating on a countertheory. what is calling the missing white voter theory in parts of the republican party after mitt romney won white voters in 1980. most republicans had to reach out. the counter theory was to increase turnout against blue collar white workers and any methituod to the madness. he's constantly feeding those voters more of kind of coal in the fire to kind of stir them up and there is a way forward, it
3:19 am
is by radically transforming the electorate into something no one else expects to see on election day. >> can i say how much we've all changed in the course of this election. >> but imagine if dan quayle had said that devastating line and said, am, too. i mean, that's effectually what. she's a nasty woman and oh, you're the puppet. you're the puppet. >> he has changed the rules and in a bad way. very low bar of success going into these debates and he doesn't even seem to make it. i didn't think this was the whackiest thing he said. the idea of not accepting the results of the election. he does have this tortured basis of why it might be rigged. i thought there were whackier things he said last night. he said the reason we're going into mosul right now, the allies helping the iraqis, is because they want to help hillary
3:20 am
clinton's election. here it is. >> let me tell you, also so sad. we had mosul, but when she left and she took everybody out, we lost mosul. you know who the big winner is in mosul and the only reason they did it is because she's running for the office of president and they want taloo l tough, they want to look good. >> that got mead. i was gob smacked. literally my hand went over my face. what is he talking about? >> so many voters are looking for a reason not to vote for hillary clinton. those moderate republicans, those romney republicans who maybe are the 6% of people in these polls who are undecided right now. and donald trump is not, day in and day out, not giving them a reason to vote for him instead of for hillary clinton. that's where we are right now. he is not convincing anyone that all the attacks against him are
3:21 am
untrue because he continues to do all of the things that hillary clinton has been telling the american public for eight months he's going to do. >> her campaign knows that. you can see that on her answer on guns. she really moderated her usual lines on firearms. and it seemed to me to be a direct appeal to republicans and independents who don't, to your point, want to vote for donald trump. safety for children rather than some of the other arguments she has made. >> that's why she's so gentle -- >> that's what i mean. >> whether it's putin or the conspiracy theory of invading mosul to help her in the election. i'll be looking for conservatives, ioakno you know, would so quickly -- giving comfort to our enemies. the suggestion that trump made that essentially iran, assad, putin, that they all sit around and just talk about how stupid
3:22 am
america's leaders are. if a democrat had said that. i mean, it's striking the kind of criticism they would get. >> let's listen to the moment where putin came up in the debate. ron, take a listen to this. >> i don't know putin. he said nice things about me, if we got along well, that would be good. if russia and the united states got along well and went after isis, that would be good. he has no respect for her. he has no respect for our president. and i'll tell you what, we are in very serious trouble. >> we missed the part where she had one of her lines, hard to know if it was practiced or spontaneo spontaneous, but it worked because you're a putin puppet. what did you think, ron? >> yeah, no, it goes to something that is larger. if you look across the expanse of all three debates, donald trump gets in the most trouble when he is -- with the exception of trade on many of the other areas whether it's putin or what he says about assad or that she
3:23 am
should not be allowed to run. that's when he kind of gets in the most trouble. where he was the most effective last night was in the second debate where he was the most generic for the first 40 minutes, he did a good impersonation of a really good republican and kind of reminded a lot of republican leaning voters around the country that, hey, this is the guy that is going to cut taxes and cut regulation and supreme court justices. that's probably not enough to overcome his deficit, but certainly puts him in a stronger position, puts republicans in a stronger position to hold the senate. where he got in the most trouble, again, was when he was taking the routes such as his refusal to condemn the overwhelming, the intelligence that russia intelligence is trying to interfere in our election. >> 17 intel agencies. >> he gets those intel briefings. >> and he interrupted and said, they don't know. they don't know. wallhouse to push him to say, well, if it is russia -- he
3:24 am
said, yeah, yeah, i would. them or anybody else. interesting why he picks that to have a hard line on it. >> panel, thank you very much for getting up extra early for us. no question that a lot of shots were traded last night on issues that really matter like the economy. so, whose ideas meet the presidential standard? we have a reality check, next. ♪ prepare for challenges specific to your business by working with trusted advisors who help turn obstacles into opportunities. experience the power of being understood.

hillary clinton and donald trump sparring over many issues during their final debate last night, including the economy. let's fact check their claims. cnn's christine romans has more with cnn money now. what are you seeing, christine? >> donald trump during a question about his plan to create new jobs he took the opportunity to make this claim, again, about the state of the u.s. economy. listen. >> last week, as you know, the end of last week they came out with an anemic jobs report. terrible jobs report. in fact, i said, is that the last jobs report before the election because if it is, i should win easily. it was so bad. the report was so bad. >> terrible, anemic, it was so
3:29 am
bad. so, was the latest jobs report anemic? let's take a look at the numbers. according to the most recent jobs report the u.s. economy added 156,000 new jobs in september. in fact, the 77nd month in a row that the economy has gained jobs marking six straight years of monthly gains. and now, although the unemployment rate ticked up slightly, look at where it is. it's at a relatively low 5%. that's cut in half from the 10% we saw in october 2009. drew maddest calls september's gains healthy and the claims by donald trump, false. we want to look at the accusation that hillary clinton leveled against trump about trump tower. >> he used undocumented labor to build the trump tower. he underpaid undocumented workers and when they complained he said, you complain, i'll get you deported. >> hillary clinton claimed that
3:30 am
he used illegal workers and he threatened to deport them when they complained about their low pay. here are the facts undocumented pollish workers sued donald trump complaining of low wages of just $4 an hour. some said they never received wages owed to them. now, this is according to litigation cited by "the new york times." trump denied knowing the workers were undocumented since they were hired by a contractor and not directly by donald trump. however in 1991 a judge ruled that trump conspired to withhold payments and owed more than $325,000 to those workers. again, according to "the new york times." the lawsuit was settled out of court. our verdict on this claim, clinton's claim is mostly true since trump was fined via a court proceeding for illegally hiring workers. you can look at all of these yourself, if you want to see them. go to cnn.com/realitycheck, guys. >> christine, thank you very much very helpful.

failed economy under barack obama, which hillary clinton will just expand upon. >> but congress woman -- hold on one second. if he loses, he said i will keep you in suspense. he would not say that he would accept the outcome. what would that -- that would throw our country into crisis. >> look, i think a lot more is being made of this than really needs to be. he simply said, i'm not going to say anything until the time. there are so many people, alisyn, that are coming out to vote in this election if they ever voted before. if we start to paint a picture that donald trump is going to somehow concede this election, which i believe wholeheartedly he should not because he's going to win, then we are going to tell those people what they believed all along is that their vote did not matter. every vote counts. i can tell you that from personal experience and i want

candidate of the american people. he is not going to be behold into the republican party or the democrat party. i personally believe that that is exactly what we need in the president. we need that person in the oval office who is not going to be e beholden to any political party and special interest groups. he is going to do what is right for america. and like i said, he is a businessman and that was the answer that he gave. you know, just because he's running for president doesn't turn him into a slick, corrupt politician like hillary clinton. >> so, what if he doesn't win? what if he loses and says he doesn't accept that. then what? >> well, you know, fair question. but i could say the same about hillary clinton. she said she'll accept it. we haven't had the situation where somebody that loses doesn't accept it. you're right. >> hillary clinton has told one
3:40 am
lie or half truth. what was important about last night's debate was that donald trump talked about the issues that americans care about and are very concerned about. he laid out a plan for the future to turn this country around and back on track with creating jobs and decreasing the deficit. you know, deficit and debt. you know, it's interesting, hillary clinton was mia for over five days getting ready for this debate that took place last night. now, here's the thing, what woman in this country has five days to prepare for anything? we're balancing our lives with work, children -- >> congresswoman, she's running for president. you don't think that she should be taking time to prepare for the debate? >> donald trump was on the campaign trail up until almost exact moment before that took place. why? because he's a worker. he's not a talker. so, here you have a situation. i honestly, the first thing that went through my head when i knew
3:41 am

3:46 am
first, let's deal with reality. what is the situation on the ground? >> well, chris, good morning. we heard from the iraqi prime minister today and things are going much better than he expeced and progressing on the ground. from what we're seeing is this is a slow, tough, methodical battle. this is a marathon, not a sprint. we heard a lot of heavy artillery going into the town just behind me. that is still under isis control and ground troops surrounded it and one other addition that is notable today is that the kurdish forces have also opened a front on the north trying to push down so they're squeezing on all sides to get to mosul, chris. >> now, as we referred before this came up in the debate. i want to play this and get your thoughts if there is any basis for what you're about to hear. >> let me tell you, mosul is so

others? where did you guys come to a conclusion about why clinton had such a hard time just owning that she did something wrong with the e-mail server? >> you know, i know that russia and other forces would love us to have a debate. this is exactly what they want. they want us to have a debate of the internal structure of hillary's campaign. what's true, what's not true. i'm just not going to play that. i'm not. as marco rubio said, we have a russian government, the russian government, a foreign government trying to essentially impact this election. and i'm sorry, chris, but using the american media to do that. >> neera -- >> any e-mail i sent was personal from my personal account to someone else's personal account. i was not on the campaign. i was a formal outside adviser with my own thoughts. honestly, i'm just telling you right now, chris, the reality of
3:56 am
this is that i think marco rubio is right about this. people should not be using this as weaponizing the e-mails or personal e-mails of anyone and sending them -- >> kellyanne conway you would be giving me all your deepest thoughts about it right now. you don't like it because it's your e-mail. you're ducking it, you're not having high ground. >> that's absolutely false. i would not be doing that. you can see in other areas where e-mails have been used on any other issue of taking the same position. >> when the -- >> actually, that is a really important, chris. i agree with you. these e-mails were not leaked. they were stolen. >> what is the difference on how they come out? the e-mails say what they say. >> you just said leaked. >> that's a separate issue. >> it is not a separate issue. how this got, how this happened was a foreign government and you don't listen to me.
3:57 am
listen to marco rubio. and our intelligence agencies and our intelligence agencies. >> but you have to understand. not just to me, but to the outside, your e-mails are what they are. now, if you say i never said this, that's something different. if you say this isn't me, i didn't write that. that is a legitimate basis. otherwise it seems like you're ducking it because you don't want to own what you said. >> i'm not not owning it. i'm not not owning it. i am saying we shouldn't really be dealing with people's private e-mails. i agree with a lot of people who made this point on both sides of the aisle. >> all right, we'll leave your answer at that. i want to get your take on something else that happened last night and what you think will be any resonance of it. bringing the most direct insult to hillary clinton. >> my social security payroll contribution will go up, as will donald's, assuming he can't figure out how to get out of it. but what we want to do -- >> such a nasty woman.
3:58 am
>> what is your take away in that? is that another throw away line or does it go deeper? >> i think it builds upon his statements throughout this campaign about women. when it happened i had to do a double take. i couldn't believe he just said such a nasty woman about his opponent. these are two people who, obviously, have vigorous debates. but the fact that he launched such a personal, personal insult after we had a discussion and debate back and forth about his treatment of women. and i think people, particularly women, were able to see in realtime his attitude and it just confirms that he believes negatively about women in general. obviously, doesn't like hillary clinton but that he would launch such a personal insult. you have seen on social media that picked up steam. voters saying i'm a nasty woman for hillary clinton. people saw that for what it was, which was another example of him being president.
3:59 am
>> appreciate your perspective. remember, if anything gets leaked or hacked or brought out about donald trump between now and the end of the race, i better not hear anything from anybody in the hillary campaign. >> believe me, i won't mention it. >> neera tanden, thank you very much. live interview with trump campaign manager tim kaine. what do you say? let's get to it. >> i will tell you at the time. i will keep you in suspense. >> he's talking down our democracy. i am appalled. >> she should not be allowed to run. >> every time donald thinks things are not going in his direction, he claims it is rigged against him. >> she is guilty of a very, very serious crime. >> when i was in "the situation room" room, he was hosting "celebrity apprentice." >> you're not up to doing the job.
4:00 am
this is "new day" with chris cuomo and alisyn camerota. debate bombshell. he says he will not say if he accepts the results of the election. he actually said i'm going to keep the country in suspense. despite the threat that it poses to our democratic process. hillary clinton called comments "horrifying." and some republicans are also slamming their nominee. his own party trying to clean up his words by saying they will accept the will of the people. so, in just minutes, trump's campaign manager kellyanne conway, as well as tim kaine will join us live on all of this. of course, a lot at stake. only 19 days left until election day. let's begin with manu raju live in las vegas. give us the latest, raju? >> donald trump entered this debate
