i'm going stay until the very end and saying even though the map looks bleak i'll hold open the positive a trump come back. she's a flawed candidate. the campaign staff says here it comes, 100 days we'll close with a strong argument and their candidate decides before he gets to the speech on the teleprompter to go off on the media and necessary women. >> it's something he can't help himself. he's never been able to overcome this impulse to air a grievance, especially if it affects him personally. you almost have to feel bad for his campaign staff because they really laid this out in a level of detail that they don't often do with thinks speeches. this is his closing argument. he'll define the choice in this race. again we talk about this a lot. yes, he did that in a later part of the speech but every time the republican nominee opens with something that's quite controversial, we have no choice but to cover that. we have to cover this. and he cannot help himself in

leaving that on the floor. >> i just think that personal conflicts are more interesting to voters than watching him channel straight change. that's what reality tv is, that's core of reality tv, score settling. trump likes to be compelling. that was part of the teleprompter speech. he planned to say those things for the first 16 minutes of the speech where he was criticizing the press and clinton and the electoral process. so perhaps they think that conflict is truly affecting voters. >> does he get pennsylvania where he's down? >> you have to wonder if there was any voter, one single voter who he reached out to or attracted in that speech. no. he's shedding supporters or potential supporters all the time. i think it's just another example. i can't wait to see what happens in these final 16 days. he's campaigning to aggressively. this is his last sort of moment

to make his point here. yesterday was just guesting started. >> let's frame it. let's show our polls of polls. when the lead is this big. hillary clinton goes into final two weeks, 16 tase out, two full weeks of campaignings that's an eight-point lead. unheard of in the last 25 years in american politics. if donald trump can get within three points we have to forget about the national polls. he wants to talk about this media bias. he criticized this company, at&t trying to buy time warner. time warner owns cnn donald trump says that won't happen if he's elected president. he'll reject that. that was part of his tirade against the media. >> the dishonest mainstream media is also part and a major part of this corruption. they are corrupt. they lie and fabricate stories to make a candidate that's not their preferred choice look as

limits on congress, messages that voters would like particularly in this anti-washington year. but he conley steps on his message. look at the one period of time where donald trump was doing very well in the polls, neck and neck with hillary clinton was when he was making speeches like this, where he was staying on message, prosecuting case, being the outsider, taking out the status quo. when he does that he loses the message. >> let's look at the proposals that he got to after beating up on the media. his 100 day priorities congressional term limits. very popular with conservatives and independents as well. renegotiate nafta his trade message in the rust belt states has been for his campaign. suspend immigration from terror prone countries. cancel most of obama's executive orders. repeal and replace obamacare. that's a change message. if he's talking about these things he can get it. this is a week where he's off the rails. i want to go back to the debate.

the fact we're talking about the third and final debate which was this week on the sunday morning after tells you about the turmoil and the constant headlines. in the debate he needed to turn in a strong performance. instead the big headline is when he said at the debate ask me on election night or the day after if i'll accept the results. >> the loser concedes to the winner and the country comes together in part for the good of the country are you saying you're not prepared? >> i'll tell you at the time. i'll keep you in suspense. >> he has every expectation to accept the results. again he's his own worst enemy if you want to prosecute the case for change or prosecute your case against clinton you can't keep saying things like that. >> he had a good moment except for that moment. he landed a couple of punches on clinton. he got out some of the talking points. but i can say from my own experience i was cracking the

lead on the ap story that made that point and the second he said that, we switched gears because, again, he's the republican nominee. if you're going to stand on the debate stage and say you can't tell us if you'll accept the results you wash away everything else that you're trying to pout there. he just can't seem to get his head around that. >> he looks at the polls too. he know he's losing this race. it seems that donald trump is laying the ground work to say, to make excuses why he didn't win, blaming the media, blaming the system and saying he may not accept the election results. that could be part of the one reason why he continually brings up the fact things are rigged against him. can't be his fault. it's the system's fault. >> if you're going to do that wait until the last couple of days. ahead we'll map out the presidential race and biggest choices facing clinton and trump. next the trump effect on the battle for the senate. this week politicians say the

one-third of the senate is up every two years. the republicans currently have 54 seats. democrats think they can take the senate back. the steepness of the hill for the republicans, see the red outlines those are states republicans are defending. they are defending way more seats than democrats. let's take some seats off the board. these are races that strategists in both parties are baked in. democrats will win california. republicans win down leer. people thought ohio would be closer. ron portman is running a good campaign. republicans are happy they think they will keep that one. in wisconsin, ron johnson is the republican incumbent. at the moment republicans are rushing money in there late but looks like the democrat will pick up that. that gets you 47-46. if clinton wins democrats only need 50. presidential campaign having an impact. missouri usually a red state. this state is in close. trump is underperforming past

republicans. up in new hampshire, kelly ayotte, her numbers in the state are pretty good but trump is dragging republicans down. that gets you 48-46. these races will decide control of the senate. hillary clinton in pennsylvania yesterday, pat toomey the incumbent republican, katie mcginty the democratic candidate. hillary clinton is asking why is this guy standing by donald trump in the wake of horrible things that trump has said. >> how much does he have to hear or to see if he doesn't have the courage to stand up against donald trump after all of this, then how will he stand up to special interests and powerful forces that are going to be trying to have their way in washington? >> it is interesting to watch in the sense this is relatively new for her toby name and going

will be with elizabeth warren and hillary clinton. the down ticket democrats are banking on hillary clinton having a big margin of victory to ride their coattails into office and in florida that's really the only chance that patrick murphy the democratic candidate has a chance of beating marco rubio. if hillary clinton has a significant margin of victory that could help whim an upset given that national democrats have pulled out money in that race. >> they have been. debating how much do we get away from trump, do we keep distance? missouri of all places which has become reliably red in presidential years. clinton campaign is down only a little bit. same in indiana. mike pence's home state republicans are leading but by a much smaller percentage. in missouri against the democratic candidate essentially almost conceding the fact that hillary clinton is going to be the next president when you don't want to give her a

welcome back to "inside politics". 16 days out here's the biggest question. can you find a viable path to victory for donald trump. it's incredibly difficult because of the state of play right now? we have hillary clinton at 307 electoral votes, donald trump at 179. takes 270 to win. can trump turn it around? yes. but it would be extraordinarily hard. number one, out west utah and arizona as toss ups. donald trump has to get these ruby red states back. that's time, energy, money in the final weeks of a campaign. he shouldn't be worrying about those but he has to. then what? he must-win north carolina. clinton has a narrow lead there

right now. he must-win ohio that one is a toss up. being generous give trump all that still not enough. donald trump is about to take a three day bus tour in florida. he needs those 29. he can't win without them. guess what? even if he got them it's not enough. donald trump needs even more than that which is why yesterday he was in pennsylvania. if he could get all those others not easy he could win by winning that. but 20 lectelectoral votes lien democratic. clinton's case talking to trump voters maybe you're reconsidering your vote for him. come on over to me. >> i want to say something to people who may be reconsidering their support for my opponent. i know you may still have questions for me. i respect that. i want to answer them. i want to earn your vote. >> when you talk to the senior trump people, do they still see a viable path or sometimes late

in the campaign if you cover bob dole in 1996, john mccain in 2008 they hope. they are hoping for divine intervention. >> they know. they know it's less a path and more of a tight rope. it's more of a, you know, a no net kind of tight rope. they have the brexit argument that trump likes to push. the fallacy there they would lead. it doesn't translate to this race because the polls aren't twin margin of error. they do think there could be some sort of last minute surge. they defied the polling and pristine past. there's still some belief within that trump inner circle yes they can pull that off. >> you have to feel that way if you're in a campaign. no matter what campaign you think you'll win until the last day. the real problem, the republican states that are at risk of flipping, traditional republican states like arizona or georgia

or even possibly utah, this is the real concern. this map could get completely out of control and be a landslide victory for hillary clinton. in the final days here where does donald trump spend his time in those more traditional battleground, try to preserve those restates from flipping. >> where does he spend his time. in '96 bob dole gave the wink nod take the money from me. trump doesn't care about the republican party and the republican party doesn't care about trump. is this wild card. it's been interesting you talk about you think they know. privately some trump campaigners feel i tried to move him. trying to rehabilitate their own reputation. listen to donald trump, rare is the candidate who talks publicly about the possibility of losing. >> what a waste of time if we don't pull this off. you know, these guys have said doesn't matter if you win or

lose, there's never been a movement like this in the history of the country. i say it matters to me whether we win or lose. so i'll have over $100 million of my own money in this campaign. >> again, just a fact check. he's added about 60 million. he has to write a pretty big check to get to $100 million. >> a lot of is and mes in there. one of the other big challenges here, we think election day is 16 days. it's not. in so many places it's not. this is a trend that's changing. early voting completely under way where 5 million people have voted. the clinton campaign is aggressively trying to capture this and put this energy in a bottle and bank it up right now. if you're sick of this election you'll vote and say stop calling me, move on. that's happening. that's a problem for trump. he loses the chance to change

the narrative. >> i want to put these numbers up. you put these numbers up. 5.1 million votes cast already. 3.4 million from key battleground states. most in florida. more democratic ballots returned than republicans. this is happening at a time -- if you have trump talking we might lose and hillary clinton talking confidently that affects people's mood their sentiment when they go out to early vote. >> chinn campaign believes in some of these states they could know well before election day if they are going to win and i think if you look at her appeal to people who may have been supporting trump and now on fence that's a sign that they feel very confident that their voters are showing up in early voting, that they are on the path to victory and can afford to be making these broader arguments right now. the amount of data churning through the clinton campaign right now is just enormous. >> helps that enthusiasm gap. trump voters are more excited to vote 0 for him than hers. if you have 16 days to get those

people out and mail in the ballot that helps. >> and the is and mes, yesterday he said something without me the movement dies. he said all along this movement is larger than me. >> that's a great thing. what happens after this election the republican party still has a lot of fissure. let's say a republican candidate doesn't want trump to come. he goes north carolina and they prefer he not. with the clinton campaign they have the data, they scored every voter. they know if you're a hot voter or cold voter. if they know you'll vote for her, then they turn you out early voting. in this nuts and bolts phase to have the trump campaign ahave this huge discord. >> portman has run a very good good campaign. knocked on doors. identified voters. has it down a science there.

he's no longer supporting donald trump because of that "access hollywood" video. presumably if they were working in tandem portman could help donald trump. if he does that now it undermines his own message. >> hillary clinton is cautious by nature so does she want to push in arizona? does she want to push in utah? does she want to push in georgia to not only say i beat donald trump or does she want to play it safe and let's get to 280, 290 if we get to 300 great. >> two more fundraisers this week. that's a sign they are trying raise money and they are going to try and win in arizona and other places. they are expanding the map. most people do not believe georgia is possible. they think it's pie in the sky. arizona they think very real. >> they also interestingly as they look at utah think that evan mcmullen has a chance to pick up six electoral votes there. it's really fascinating.

trump having a feud with his party. he doesn't have surrogates to amplify his message. the only person he has is mike pence. you say do surrogates matter. in a lot of ways they don't. in some ways they do. they have big named surrogates to get people out to the polls. >> we've been hearing in the primaries, remember jeff sessions one of his most loyal surrogates didn't endorse trump until a month before the primaries were over. all the people he mocked and shunned they are now shunning him. >> it's not just to give speeches. michele obama was in arizona to get people to early vote. these were organizing tools. the clinton campaign and democrats are running circles around them in terms of music concerts and other things. they are organizing tools. so every time you see her speaking she's in a place for a reason. that's what trump doesn't have. >> they had miley cyrus, whether

talking generically. but that's in 2007. i'm not sure it will help donald trump to bring it up now. >> the relationships between the obamas and clintons have changed so dramatically since then. there was a lot of tension between them. it's not they are close personally. you can't underestimate the importance to barack obama that hillary clinton after their primary came out, campaigned for him, was enthusiastic and then joined the administration as secretary of state and bill clinton in 2012 giving that rousing speech at the convention there's an evolution in that relationship that makes 2007 just lifetimes ago. >> even if there was a disagreement the idea of having donald trump as the next occupier of the oval office would bring michele obama, you know, out there campaigning. i was going to say something i shouldn't have. she's all in. michele obama is campaigning much more than she planned to. initially she was just going to do a few things.

after the elections from the house freedom caucus, group of conservatives who led that charge against john boehner several years ago and starting his ouster last year. the caucus is demanding to delay leadership elections scheduled to take place right after the elections. they want to have them later in the lame duck session in order to see how ryan deals with spending bill negotiations. some members of the freedom caucus are not happy with ryan's handling of donald trump, some of those members threatening to vote against paul ryan if he were to run for speaker again, assuming he does and there's a problem in a new majority of house republicans keeping the majority it will be a smaller majority. fewer chances for ryan to afford losing defections, more defections. the question they haven't been able to answer if not ryan then who? >> the republican civil strife will not end on election day. >> the trump show, this reality

tv series called trump's campaign rallies, as this gets bleaker, they are getting more creative. they've been doing these big meet hangar rallies. this week they were supposed to have him land on the space shuttle runway which would have really thrilled the make america great types. florida today newspaper reports that apparently has been scrubbed. so what that says is maybe that's a new symbol for his campaign. but expect that campaign team to have some pretty neat tv in the closing weeks. >> keep the cane happy. i'll close with this. as we head deep into october, world series an kplain crunch time. republicans are looking for an andrew miller, a good closer to the counter the deep bullpen by hillary clinton. republicans in tough races are asking who can help me? well donald trump is toxic in most of the competitive races
